Lohaghat – A COMPLETE Travel Guide and Itinerary

lohaghat

In this detailed travel guide on Lohaghat, I will provide necessary details that can be of help in planning a trip to this offbeat destination in Uttarakhand. The article below will cover both Lohaghat and Abbott Mount and can be used for visiting both the places.

When you talk about a trip to Uttarakhand, a few names like Mussoorie , Rishikesh, Nainital come to mind immediately. Some other offbeat destinations like Dhanaulti or Gangotri have also started receiving plenty of tourists recently.

But outside of these names, there are still several other scenic places that are not on the tourist map yet. These destinations are all easy to reach but still largely unexplored. Lohaghat is one such charming little hamlet.

“If there is heaven on earth, it is in Kashmir”. These are the famous words of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. But did you know that an Englishman responded to these words saying that “Why to go to Kashmir? If there is heaven in the world, it’s in Lohaghat”.

These are the words of Mr. P Barron. He was a sugar trader and is best known for establishing Nainital in 1840 as a tourist resort.

Quick Navigation

About Lohaghat

Sitting silently on the banks of the Lohawati river, in the middle of a dense forest and surrounded by lush green mountains, Lohaghat looks like a town straight out of a painting. It is a quiet little place located at a distance of 200 kilometers from Rampur and 62 kilometers from Pithoragarh. About 7 kilometers ahead of Lohaghat is Abbott Mount, another pretty little hill station.

Lohaghat is a great place to go to if you want to avoid crowded tourist places and would rather spend some time in peace. It is at an altitude of 1,754 meters (5,755 ft) and is also a center of historical and mythological importance. There isn’t much to do around here except for enjoying the serenity of the place and the natural beauty around you; and that is exactly the reason why you should visit Lohaghat.

Reaching Lohaghat is not difficult at all. It is located on the highway to Pithoragarh. Champawat district headquarters are only about 15 kilometers from Lohaghat so the place remains well connected throughout the year.

For the sake of explaining the journey, I will assume that you were starting from Delhi. Even if you were coming from a different city though, most of the information below will still apply.

Starting from Delhi, the route of the journey will be as mentioned below.

Delhi – Ghaziabad – Moradabad – Rampur – Rudrapur – Tanakpur – Champawat – Lohaghat

There can be a few variations to the route but this is the best and the fastest way to get there. The distance traveled will be close to 425 kilometers, depending upon where you started from in Delhi.

The travel time can easily be around 10-12 hours. Hence, an early start from Delhi is highly advised. The newly built highway until Rampur is super smooth. The road between Rampur to Lohaghat is a mix of good and bad but mostly average.

Places to visit in Lohaghat

Let us now take a look at tourist places in Lohaghat. As I mentioned previously in the article, Lohaghat is really a charming little hamlet and as such, there is not much to see or do in the village itself.

But with that being said, there are plenty of tourist places near Lohaghat. You can stay here for a couple of days and make it your base for daily excursions.

Abbott Mount

Quite a tourist destination in itself, Abbott Mount is another quaint little town of Uttarakhand that not many know about. The place is named after an Englishman, John Abbott, who bought some tea gardens here and intended to make it as an English settlement.

abbott mount

If you search, the name Abbott Mount will also come up as one of the most haunted places in Uttarakhand . As per the legend, in one of the Bungalows here, a Doctor by the name of Morrison used the local villagers as a scapegoat to perform some of his illegal medical experiments.

During this time in the 1920s, a lot of local villagers disappeared, never to be seen again. It is believed that they all fell victim to Morrison’s experiments and were buried in the forest. Spirits of these dead patients are still believed to haunt “Mukti Kothri”, one of the rooms of the old Bungalow.

Haunting however is not all that you should go looking for in Abbott Mount. This peaceful village offers great views of enchanting snow-clad Himalayan peaks and away from the noisy city life. The atmosphere here is quite calm and pleasant. There are never a lot of tourists here and perfect if you are looking for a less crowded place.

This is an old church in Abbott Mount that was built by the English here in 1942. Along with this church, there are also 13 old cottages that are a great example of colonial-style architecture. The place also offers great views of the surrounding valley and even the 7 kilometers long drive is quite scenic.

Lohaghat to Abbott Mount

From Lohaghat, you will start driving towards Pithoragarh. About 5 kilometers out of town, you will turn right and take the road going uphill. Drive for about 3 kilometers through a dense forest and you will arrive at Abbott Mount. There are a couple of hotels here as well if you wish to stay for the night.

Banasur Ka Kila

Also known as Bana, Banasur (also spelled Banasura) was a thousand-armed Asura king. He was the son of Daitya King Bali (also known as Mahabali) was. Both father and son were killed by Lord Vishnu, as Vanama Avatar, and as Lord Krishna.

There is an ancient fort about 7 kilometers from Lohaghat. There is no telling how old it really is but it is said that it was built by Banasur himself when he ruled the region.

banasur ka kila

The above picture is of the so called kila. I posted it here so that you know what you were getting into. It must have been a small fortress on top of the hill once upon a time but what now remains are just crumbled walls and broken stairs. I was kind of disappointed on reaching here so do not keep your hopes too high.

With that being said, it is still a great vantage point and gives an awesome view of the entire valley around from the top.

Mayawati Ashram

No, we are not talking about the former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh. This Ashram was built by two disciples of Swami Vivekananda, James Henry Sevier, and Charlotte Sevier. The Ashram today is best known for publishing the original writings of Vivekananda.

It is located at a distance of about 9 kilometers from Lohaghat. Swami Vivekananda himself stayed at this Ashram several times. The room that was formerly occupied by him has now been converted into a library. It is also known as Advaita Ashrama.

Even if you do not have an interest in Ashram or old monuments, it is still a peaceful place to visit and spend some time in peace.

mayawati ashram

Pancheshwar Mahadev Temple

This temple is about 38 kilometers from Lohaghat and will easily take you a total of 3-4 hours to make a round trip. There are two reasons why you would want to visit here. The first is that it is a very sacred and ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The second reason is that it is at the confluence of river Sharda and river Kali. So even if you do not want to visit the temple, visit the spot to see the confluence of these two mighty rivers.

Together with natural beauty and stunning vistas, this pretty much is the complete list of all tourist places in Lohaghat. Spend a couple of days here, visit these places, drive around and it will be a great short trip.

Things to do near Lohaghat

After what to see at Lohaghat, let us now take a look at some of the other things that you can do while staying in the village.

Photography

This one I think goes without saying. A trip to Lohaghat will offer you a chance of all kinds of photography. You can click landscape, colonial-era architecture, medieval forts, ancient temples, and portraits of the locals (after permission) of course. It does not matter if you were a serious photographer with a bulky DSLR or an amateur with a fancy cellphone, Lohaghat will give you plenty of chances to click numerous photos.

Enjoy the Night Skies

The pollution-free skies of Lohaghat light up each night with numerous stars, a sight that we city folks are not accustomed to. If you were carrying a capable enough camera and knew what you were doing, you will have your fun clicking some long exposure shots and star trails.

Yes, if you are into Yoga and meditation, a trip to Lohaghat will serve you really well. Visit the Mayawati Ashram and spend some time meditating. You can also buy some literature on the teachings of Swami Vivekananda.

Talk to the Locals

There is a lot of mythology related to Lohaghat. Put it together with the stories of Abbott Mount and there is a lot that the villagers here can tell you. Talk to them, learn about their cultures, listen to their stories, and have a great time.

Weather of Lohaghat

Due to its high altitude, the weather of Lohaghat remains pleasant for most of the year. November marks the beginning of the winter season and it lasts until March. The average temperature in these months ranges from 2°C minimum and 11°C maximum. These are just average numbers though and during the months of January and February, the temperature at night can drop down to 0°C as well.

It does not snow in Lohaghat but can still get terribly cold. Spring season arrives in April followed by summer shortly after. The weather from April to June remains very pleasant with moderately warm days and pleasantly cool nights. The average temperature ranges from 12°C minimum to 26°C maximum.

The region starts to receive pre-monsoon showers towards the end of June and it continues to rain heavily throughout August and September. The average temperature remains the same as the summer months but the incessant rains cause risk of landslides and swollen rivers. Sometimes it can rain at regular intervals for days altogether, trapping you indoors completely.

Monsoon departs in September but leaves plenty of greenery behind. The scenery at this time is at its best. The mountains will look as if they have just been washed clean and covered under a carpet of green. October marks the arrival of the autumn season. All that was green in September now turns orange, giving a magical touch to the valley. Winter again starts to settle in towards the end of October.

Best time to visit Lohaghat

Now based on the information above, I believe it is safe to say that the best time to visit Lohaghat is from April to June and then in September. The months of July and August must be avoided due to heavy rains. You can plan a winter trip as well but the scenery at this time will be very dull and dry. Since it rarely snows in Lohaghat, it will just be terribly cold weather that you will face.

Are you already planning a trip to Lohaghat or Abbott Mount in Uttarakhand? This detailed travel guide will help you plan a memorable trip to this offbeat place near Delhi in Kumaon – Uttarakhand.

lohaghat near tourist places

Lohaghat, a tiny hamlet perched on the banks of Lohawati river, offers serenity, wonderfully mild climate, lush greenery by way of pine and oak tree forests. With beauty aplenty, it is truly a surprise that this place is one of the least explored regions of Himalayas. During summers, the place turns red thanks to the Rhododendrons spread over the entire area.

Let's quickly dive into the details:

About Lohaghat

Lohaghat has an important and integral place in the historical and mythological landscape of India. It is believed that this region was the cultural capital of the Chand Dynasty, dating back to the 11th Century. Thus, ancient festivals are celebrated with a lot of pomp and circumstance in this region. This offbeat place in Uttarakhand will definitely catch your fancy and take you places.

Located at the height of 1745 meters in Champawat, Kumaon; Lohaghat is a serene place perched in the hills. Suggested Itinerary

While one may choose to spend a longer duration here, I suggest a two-day excursion for enjoying Lohaghat. Lohaghat is a perfect long weekend getaway when life in the cities takes its toll. Here’s what I suggest you do –

Day 0 – Leave from Delhi

Head towards Lohaghat by your chosen mode of travel. Try reaching as early in the morning the next day as possible, to fully utilize your time when in Lohaghat.

Day 1- Explore the nature around Lohaghat

By reaching early in the morning, you assure two things –

  • You have plenty of time to soak in the beauty and nature around you
  • You’re rested enough to not feel the burden of long-distance travel and can take your adventures at your own pace.

Today is a day to take it easy. I suggest you visit the Mayawati Ashram and go on a meditation and relaxation spree! You can also pick a trail in the surrounding forest and explore the mountains!

Swinging the curvy roads of Uttarakhand

Day 2 – Explore nearby places

There’s a tonne to do around Lohaghat, and all the quaint locations are situated nearby itself. Start your day early by climbing to the ruins of Banasur Ka Kila. After a beautiful morning in the place, head on back to your hotel and relax for the afternoon. In the evening you can visit Abbott Mount.

Day 3 – End of Trip

Day to head back to the reality of your normal life with a rejuvenated soul!

Nearby places

While Lohaghat is a tiny hamlet, don’t be fooled by its size. There is plenty to do nearby to keep you engrossed fully

Abbott Mount

Located about 7 km from Abbott Mount is a MUST VISIT. The road leading up to the place will take you through a lot of twists and turns, and you’ll be climbing a gradual height through dense forests. The ride is worth it, and the views are mesmerizing.

Abbott Mount was discovered by an Englishman, John Abbott, who set up his cottage there. The house has since lost its sheen and glory of yesteryear. However, it still stands tall as a ghost of his past. Reportedly, the place is now considered haunted. There is also an old abandoned church in Abbott Mount.

Mayawati Ashram

Another serene place nearby Lohaghat is Mayawati Ashram. The distance from Lohaghat to Mayawati Ashram is only 4.5 km from Lohaghat. The Ashram was set up by Swami Vivekananda’s disciples James and Charlotte Servier.

After returning from Switzerland, Swami Vivekananda visited the Ashram. His room has been converted into a library now. It is a wonderful place to go and meditate and connect with your soul.

Banasur ka Kila

My favorite place for sure near Lohaghat is Banasur ka Kila with its spectacular views. This place also lies around 7 KMs from Lohaghat. The ruins of the fort are captivating. You’ll have to climb a steep slope for about 1.5 KMs to reach the top.

And, the views are spectacular, and the river Lohawati also emerges from this hill itself. While the Fort might have lost its historical glory – the stories are plenty to keep its charm.

A unique place with a unique culture, Devidhura is situated around 45 KMs from Lohaghat and has a beautiful temple that has important significance on Raksha Bandhan. Also, it is quite a casual affair wherein two groups of singing and dancing folks throw stones at each other while holding wooden shields. It is, for some reason, considered auspicious if you get hurt in this process.

Where to stay

There are a few options when it comes to staying in Lohaghat. However, I would strongly urge you to go camping when in Lohaghat. The location is fantastic, and the night skies sing melodies like no other place.

However, for this, you’ll need to carry your camping gear. Homestays such as Kalptaru will definitely please you with its views and hospitality. Hotel Ranjeet Palace is also a decent stay option and has access to all attractions. Of course, the town has the trusty KMVN .

If looking for a little more luxury, Abbott Mount is located just 7 km away.

Inside of KMVN Rest House in Manila

Where to eat

Roadside dhabas are where it’s at! Being a tiny town, it is only natural that there are not many establish restaurants, etc. And, to top it all off, these roadside dhabas serve lip-smacking indo-Chinese and typical north Indian food. Also, in-house restaurants at hotels will prepare meals as per your liking.

Meditate, relax and reconnect with your inner self when you’re in Lohaghat. Such requirements are often imperative when wanting to unwind. Lohaghat has the views, the temperament, and the understanding to let you chill. Also, while it is sometimes necessary to enjoy some activity – that is also aplenty in and near Lohaghat.

Lohaghat is a town that is steeped in history. Places nearby find mention in the ancient mythological texts of India.

It is believed that the area around Lohaghat may have been the cultural capital of the Chand dynasty, a Rajput clan who ruled the Kumaon region in the 11th and 12th century. The existence of various ancient temples and the celebration of ancient festivals in the region seems to point in this direction too.

In more recent times, it is said that a British naturalist by the name of Barron was probably one of the first British visitors to Lohagahat sometime in the mid 19th century.

Two groups of singing and dancing crowds pelt stones at each other. They hold huge wooden shields to protect themselves as they hurl stones at the rival group. Another place I would love to check out whilst in India. With your other post I read earlier – An Early Morning Trek to view the Himalayan Ranges at Shitlakhet, Uttarakhand – the two places look very close together so could do a few days in this area and explore its natural and man made beauty. 🙂

Wow, what a beautiful place! I wish I’d known about it during my visit to India… I guess I’ll just have to go back 😉 Thanks for sharing!

If I was only looking at the pictures, I would have actually thought this is Kashmir! I had no idea such a lovely place existed in Uttrakhand which goes to show how underrated that state is. Abbott Mount looks amazing, I am embarrassed to admit I’ve never heard of it!

Lohaghat looks beautiful I was a bit bemused by the Swiss Chalet style house till I read your story. I’d love to visit for myself!

You are really saying it is an excellent base from which to see temples, forts, and pilgrimage centers. But just having the beautiful scenes of rivers and rhodies would nourish my soul!

A great find with u parallel beauty as you stated nothing less then Kashmir. Never expected something like this in Uttarakhand. The gurudwara is beautiful and a must stop if I was there. Great natural beauty enriched in history. Thanks for sharing.

Faced Issues during the Uttarakhand trip !

We recently completed a 12 Days trip to Uttarakhand. The exeperience was mixed, had to change the room in Mussoorie hotel Green N Breeze as the size was vey small and our family could hardly fit in and faced issues regarding going to Lal Tibba and Landour as the taxi we hired from the company refused to go there citing the local txi union issues and we have to pay INR 2000 from our pocket. The Jim Corbett safari was average as there was no tiger spooting though our driver Nandan tried his best to take us around the different spots where we could spot one.We again faced the challenge during the room changing in Hotel Ashdale Nainital as the room allocated was facing the back wall of the garden and in the process wasted our precious 4-5 hrs. All Seasons helpdesk persons Ravi & Saurabh and tried their best to resolve all the issues we faced but in the whole process we wasted the significant amount of time during our trip.

Lohaghat is one of the best hill station of Uttarakhand...........

Trump's hush money trial begins Monday. Here's what to expect.

Donald Trump will become the first former president to stand trial in a criminal case next week — and he'll do so against the backdrop of a presidential campaign in which he's the presumptive Republican nominee.

Jury selection begins Monday in New York City, and the trial is expected to last six to eight weeks.

Here's a look at what you need to know and what's expected to happen.

How long is jury selection expected to last?

Jury selection is expected to last one to two weeks. Starting Monday, prosecutors and lawyers for Trump will seek to whittle a pool of potentially hundreds of people to 12 jurors and six alternates. Each juror will answer 42 questions designed to discern whether they can be impartial about the polarizing former president. Questions include inquiries about what news sources they follow and whether they've ever attended any Trump rallies or protests. The jurors will be anonymous, meaning their identities will be withheld from the public because of security concerns.

A criminal trial involving Trump's company before the same judge in 2022 took a week to select 12 jurors and five alternates.

What is Trump charged with?

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg charged Trump with 34 counts of first-degree falsifying business records, a low-level felony. Trump faces a maximum of four years behind bars if he’s convicted.

What is the prosecution alleging?

Prosecutors allege Trump “repeatedly and fraudulently falsified New York business records to conceal criminal conduct that hid damaging information from the voting public during the 2016 presidential election.”

At the heart of the case are allegations of various sex scandals that prosecutors say Trump tried to suppress with the help of his lawyer Michael Cohen and top executives in charge of the National Enquirer. In the final days of the election, Cohen paid $130,000 to one of the women, adult film star Stormy Daniels, to keep silent about her claim she'd had a sexual encounter with Trump in 2006. Trump has denied the allegation.

After he was elected, Trump reimbursed Cohen through a series of checks from his trust that were processed through the Trump Organization and labeled as payments "for legal services rendered" — a claim the DA says was false.

What is Trump’s defense?

Trump has maintained he didn’t do anything wrong, and while he has acknowledged reimbursing Cohen, he has said he didn’t know details about what Cohen was doing.

His lawyers are likely to target Cohen on the witness stand by painting him as a liar who loathes the former president and whose testimony shouldn’t be believed. They’re likely to be aggressive with Daniels, as well, and they’re expected to focus on comments she has made mocking Trump in an effort to portray her as biased and untrustworthy.

Who will testify for the prosecution?

Cohen, who says Trump directed him to make the payment to Daniels, is expected to be a key witness, as is Daniels. Trump's attorneys sought to bar both from testifying, but Judge Juan Merchan gave both the green light to take the stand. Daniels' former attorney Keith Davidson is likely to testify about his negotiations over the payment, a source with direct knowledge of the situation said.

Also expected to testify is Karen McDougal, a former Playboy model who said she had an affair with Trump, a claim he denies. She received money from the Enquirer to keep quiet about her allegations in what prosecutors said was part of a "catch and kill" scheme designed to keep a lid on potential Trump scandals.

David Pecker, a Trump ally who was the CEO of Enquirer publisher AMI at the time, is also expected to be called, the source said. Dylan Howard, another former AMI executive involved in the discussions with Trump and Cohen, may also testify.

Former White House communications director Hope Hicks — who prosecutors have said was involved in phone calls among Trump, Cohen and AMI — and former Trump assistant Madeleine Westerhout are also likely to take the stand, the source said.

Jurors are also expected to hear from Jeffrey McConney, the former controller for the Trump Organization, and Deborah Tarasoff, a former accounts payable supervisor at the company, the source said.

Who will testify in Trump's defense?

Court filings show Trump plans to call Bradley A. Smith, a former Federal Election Commission chair who will testify about the FEC and its function, laws it's responsible for enforcing and definitions and terms that relate to the case. The judge ruled he won’t be allowed to offer his opinion about whether Trump's actions violated election law, as Trump had hoped he would.

Trump, who is the only person who can directly rebut some of Cohen's claims, said Friday that he would "absolutely" testify in the trial. He is not required to take the stand.

Will Trump have to be in court every day?

Unlike the New York civil fraud and E. Jean Carroll defamation trials, the DA's case is criminal, so Trump is required to be in court every day to participate in his defense. The trial is off on Wednesdays, but Trump will have to be in court for the four other days of the court week. The trial days are expected to last from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Trump has suggested he might do campaign events at night after having attended court during the day.

How many jurors' votes are needed for a conviction or an acquittal?

To reach a verdict, all 12 jurors must agree on whether Trump is guilty or not guilty of a specific charge.
