Show Information

Speculated by many (including NY Times critic Ben Brantley) to be the greatest of all American musicals, Gypsy tells the story of the dreams and efforts of one hungry, powerhouse of a woman to get her two daughters into show business. Gypsy is loosely based on the 1957 memoir of famous striptease artist Gypsy Rose Lee, entitled Gypsy: Memoirs of America’s Most Celebrated Stripper . The memoir and the musical focus on the story of Gypsy Rose Lee’s mother, Rose, and earned Rose a place in the theatrical and literary canon as the quintessential, archetypal “Stage Mother.” The musical features songs that have become standards of the musical theatre canon, including “Some People,” “Let Me Entertain You,” “Rose’s Turn,” and the show-stopping “Everything’s Coming Up Roses”. Gypsy is famous for helping launch lyricist Stephen Sondheim’s career, and features a book by Arthur Laurents that is widely considered to be one of the classic examples of a traditional “book musical.” At the heart of the musical is the gregarious Rose, whose journey made critic Frank Rich call Gypsy , “Broadway’s own brassy, unlikely answer to King Lear .”

Imelda Staunton as Momma Rose in Gypsy

Gypsy review – Imelda Staunton gives ‘one of the greatest performances I’ve ever seen in a musical’

Savoy theatre, London Everything’s coming up roses for this Chichester transfer of the Sondheim show about a starstruck mum who steers her children into showbiz

J onathan Kent’s production of this fabulous musical, unseen in the West End for over 40 years, has got even better since its Chichester debut last autumn. Since the show is about Momma Rose’s attempt to turn her progeny into vaudeville stars, it sits perfectly in a traditional proscenium theatre.

Even the overture, played with gusto by the pit orchestra under Nicholas Skilbeck’s baton, creates a sense of anticipatory excitement. The show itself, first seen on Broadway in 1959, is a testament to the power of the integrated musical in that the book by Arthur Laurents, the music by Jule Styne and the lyrics by Stephen Sondheim are all partners in a genuine coalition. On the one hand, they evoke the tackiness of the touring vaudeville circuit of the 1920s and 30s where children were mercilessly exploited. But the show’s co-creators also come up with an unforgettable protagonist in Momma Rose herself: “a showbiz Oedipus”, as Sondheim called her, wrapped in self-delusion but also periodically engaging in her determination to take on the industry’s titans in order to promote her children.

Every facet of the character is caught by Imelda Staunton who gives one of the greatest performances I’ve ever seen in musical theatre. At first, she seems the kind of pushy, plucky, determined showbiz mum we’ve all met. But Staunton, as the evening goes on, introduces infinite shades into the character. She can be soft and wheedling with her faithful beau, Herbie, whose arm she gently caresses in You’ll Never Get Away From Me. But you literally see her iron grip in the first act climax, Everything’s Coming Up Roses, when she seizes daughter Louise by the scruff of the neck and urges her to “take a bow”.

Imelda Staunton with Lara Pulver as her reluctant daughter Louise in Gypsy by Laurents, Styne and Sondheim.

In a superb piece of acting, Staunton also reminds us that Momma Rose hungers for the limelight herself. She is exquisitely funny when, as her ageing clan audition for a Broadway mogul, she scurries about the stage wielding props. In my own favourite number, Together Wherever We Go, Staunton resorts to the elbow-jutting jauntiness of an old vaudeville trouper.

But Rose’s dream of stardom reaches its apogee in the final number when, as the character breaks down, a mink-wrapped Staunton grotesquely mimics the strip-teasing motions of her now celebrated daughter, Gypsy Rose Lee. Sondheim invokes Sophocles. Staunton’s tremendous performance reminded me more of Brecht’s Mother Courage: another woman who, through her single-minded devotion to her children, inevitably loses them.

Peter Davison has joined the cast for the West End run of Gypsy.

The show has also gained since Chichester in that Peter Davison has now taken over the role of Herbie, Rose’s lover and the family act’s agent, and invests the character with a warmth that was missing before. Lara Pulver charts Louise’s growth from shy wallflower to coldly calculating stripper with great skill and there is assured support from Scarlet Roche as a cartwheeling Baby June and Louise Gold, Julie Legrand and Anita Louise Combe as a trio of hardened ecdysiasts.

Anthony Ward’s designs and Stephen Mear’s choreography, evoking the vanished world of vaudeville, add to the gorgeous pleasure of an evening that both celebrates showbiz and at the same time exposes the psychotic nature of addiction to stardom.

Gypsy: A Musical Fable is a mid-20th-century musical written by Jule Styne, Arthur Laurents and Stephen Sondheim. The musical is inspired by the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee and centers around a mother raising her two daughters for a life in show business.

Laurents and Sondheim had previously enjoyed success with their musical West Side Story  and began work on Gypsy with a vision of detailing the struggles of working in the show business. Gypsy premiered on Broadway at The Broadway Theatre in 1959 and met with immediate success. The musical contains several songs which have since become popular standards, most notably “You Gotta Get a Gimmick,” “Together (Wherever We Go)” and “Everything’s Coming Up Roses.” The work is often analyzed in drama programs due to its rich characters and timeless yet harrowing themes.

Now widely regarded as one of the 20th century’s greatest musicals, Gypsy has enjoyed a number of landmark revivals on Broadway as well as London’s West End. The 1989 Broadway revival received the Tony Award for Best Revival. Get your Gypsy - The Musical tickets today to see this celebrated musical yourself.

Gypsy The Musical

Returns to london from 28th march 2015 at savoy theatre, strand, london, wc2r 0et.

Gypsy The Musical

Gypsy the Musical first appeared in 1959 on Broadway under the title ‘Gypsy: A Musical Fable’. The show features music by Jule Styne and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and is loosely based on the memoirs of famous striptease artist Gypsy Rose Lee. Although the main focus of the musical is on Rose, the archetypal show-business mother who raises Lee (Louise) and her sister June as they travel around America with their vaudeville act.

Gypsy is considered by many to be the greatest American musicals, and the role of Mama Rose is often called the ‘King Lear’ of the musical theatre canon. The show has appeared on Broadway no less than 5 times and continues to be produced by regional theatre companies around the whole of the USA. A UK production had not been seen in London’s West End since 1973! The West End revival of Gypsy marks the first showing of the widely celebrated musical in London in over 40 years!

The musical features songs that have since become show standards, and was famous for helping to launch the career of lyricist Stephen Sondheim, who went on to write complete musical scores of his own. “Everything’s Coming Up Roses”, “Some People”, “Let Me Entertain You” and of course “Rose’s Turn” are all highlights of any production. Arthur Laurents wrote the book of the musical, and it is widely considered to be one of the classic examples of a traditional ‘book musical’ which became popular during the middle of the 20th Century.

This website provides information about the musical, including the various productions that have played on Broadway and in the West End. It also includes information on the film adaptations, as well as details of the upcoming film adaptation.

Isnt it about time that Gypsy returned to the West End?! Heard that there is talk about it returning, is anyone able to confirm if this is correct?

' src=

Well Jo….it has been confirmed that the show will run at the Chichester Festival Theatre in October 2014. Beyond that, we’ll have to wait and see!

' src=

I would love to see gipsy in the west end. My parents talked about it a lot. i have never seen it. Paul Ogrady talks about it at lot. I think its his favourite show. Perhaps it could be put on at the provancies. Perhaps P O could influence someone to put it on.

' src=

i have seen gypsy with tyne daly…linda lavin…bernadette peters…roz russell..bette midler…betty buckley patty lu pone…and in niagra on the lake, canada…they all added something to the part..i hope im,elda stanton makes it to the west end..i would come over from new jersey usa..to see it again

' src=

Please please bring it to london

' src=

So sad Chichester sold out!! Where else can I see Gypsy??

' src=

Please let me know if Gypsy comes to the west end

' src=

Would like to be informed if it comes to the West End

' src=

Saw the show in Chichester this week, it was amazing and Imelda Staunton was astounding as Mama Rose!! If you haven’t seen it, get the dvd. Here’s hoping that it transfers to the West End soon!! 🙂

' src=

Saw Gypsy last Wednesday evening when visiting London from NYC. It is magnificent. Being old enough to have seen all of the Madame Roses except Merman — I’m a day and a half too young to have seen her — Imelda Staunton gives by far the best interpretation I have seen. She is supported by a fabulous ensemble cast. Thanks to all for a wonderful evening at the Savoy Theatre and toi toi toi for tomorrow’s official opening performance.

' src=

I would love to know if there is any chance that this wonderful musical will go on tour. The Mayflower at Southampton would be fantastic.

No tour plans as of yet, Hilary! We recommend you see it in London at the Savoy if you want to see the show this year.

' src=

Please can you tell me if Imelda Staunton will still be part of this production in August ??? Xx

At the moment there have been no cast change announcements. We believe Imelda will be playing the role through to 28th November, the date of the shows recent extension.

' src=

I am a great musical fan and have seen most musicals in London since the 1950s and I can say this musical starring Imelda Staunton has been one of the most moving that I have experienced.

' src=

We truly hope that GYPSY is a fantastic West End success as our first opportunity to visit London from the North East isn’t until January 2016. We will watch for further performance extensions.

' src=

Come on guys – bring the show out on tour to us poor people living a very long way away from London (Cornwall)!!

' src=

I have seen Imelda Staunton in Gypsy tonight. Wow! I go to the theatre a lot and I must say Imelda’s acting is the best performance I have ever seen in a musical. She is quite simply sublime! Feel very privileged to have seen it.

' src=

I have watched Natalie Woods film of Gypsy over and over. My husband and I are big theatre goers and I have said for a long long time that Gypsy should come to the Liverpool Empire and that Bill Kenwright should stage it. Now I have watched the BBC 4 showing with Emelda Staunton appearing in it. Please please please can this come upto Liverpool as not everyone can travel to London!!!!!

' src=

Everyone ells me to “get the DVD” of Imeda Staunton’s Gypsy but WHEN will it be available!!!!!!!!!!!!!

' src=

It’s time for the BBC to release the DVD and time for Imelda to take that performance around the UK. That would be a rare tour with the original West End star giving her five star performance from Plymouth to Aberdeen.

' src=

Just watched the 2015 London production with Imelda Staunton on Channel 13.

While the other women who played Rose are wonderful, Imelda Staunton took my breath away.

Don’t know how anyone could repeat a performance like that night after night.

AMAZING – never saw or heard of her before.

Never saw a female give a performance like this.

' src=

There’s a terrific performance of Gypsy on at the Minack Theatre in Cornwall this week (28/08/17-01/09/17)! Even if enthusiasts could get there in time, they’d find that it’s completely sold out! It’s an amateur company but they’re all stars nevertheless!

Gypsy is presented by special arrangement with Music Theatre International.

March 1 - 17, 2024

A musical fable book by arthur laurents music by jule styne lyrics by stephen sondheim suggested by the memoirs of gypsy rose lee.

Regarded by many theatre professionals as the finest musical ever created, Gypsy is the ultimate tale of an ambitious stage mother fighting for her daughters’ success – while secretly yearn ing for her own. Set all across America in the 1920s and 30s, whe n vaudeville was dying and burlesque was born, Arthur Laurents’ landmark show explores the world of two-bit show business with brass, humor, heart and sophistication.

“The quintessential American musical.”

– the hollywood reporter, “i've always had only one choice in the category of favorite musical. it is gypsy...a wrenching fable about a tyrannical stage mother and the daughters she both champions and cripples - yet also a showcase for one classic jule styne/stephen sondheim song and rousing jerome robbins vaudeville routine after another.” , – frank rich, the new york times, “styne’s score [is] one of the best for any show ever.” , – ben brantley, the new york times, “fabulous... a testament to the power of the integrated musical in that the book by arthur laurents, the music by jule styne and the lyrics by stephen sondheim are all partners in a genuine coalition.” , – michael billington, the guardian, “gypsy, the 1959 fable of the last days of vaudeville, shines with a magnified transparency that lets you see right down to the naked core of characters so hungry for attention that it warps them.” , “with its backstage shenanigans , dark-tinged striver's success story, and characters perpetually on the road, gypsy is arguably, in thematic terms, the quintessential american musical.”,  – leslie felperin, the hollywood reporter.

Gypsy – 19 May to 30 September

Gypsy is one of the greatest and most dazzling of all musicals. Based on the tantalising memoir of famous burlesque artist Gypsy Rose Lee, it tells the story of ambitious showbiz mother Rose, who travels across America with her daughters, Baby June and Louise, in search of success with their homemade vaudeville act.

When Baby June leaves the act to elope, Rose vows to make introverted Louise into a star, and will do almost anything to see her daughter break into the big time.

Prepare to fall in love again with iconic songs, including  Some People ,  Let Me Entertain You , and the show-stopping  Everything’s Coming Up Roses.

Madonna

In 1974, at the age of 15, Madonna snuck out of her father’s house in suburban Detroit to attend David Bowie’s Diamond Dogs Tour. She was summarily grounded for the summer, but the punishment was worth it. “I don’t think that I breathed for two hours. It was the most amazing show that I’d ever seen,” Madonna said during a speech inducting the Thin White Duke into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1996.

Madonna’s first two tours, 1985’s Virgin Tour and 1987’s Who’s That Girl World Tour, served as experiment labs for the burgeoning superstar. In 1990, her Blond Ambition World Tour revolutionized the pop concert. Drawing inspiration from Bowie’s theatricality, Prince’s cheeky flamboyance and Michael Jackson’s stage command, she offered audiences an immersive experience that went beyond conventional live performance.

Each of Madonna’s subsequent tours have pushed the boundaries even further, embracing technology for multimedia (and multi-sensory) presentations of her music. On the heels of her own induction into the Rock Hall of Fame in 2008, the singer’s Sticky & Sweet Tour became the highest grossing tour for a female artist in history – a record she held until 2023, when it was finally eclipsed by Beyoncé’s Renaissance Tour, according to Billboard Boxscore.

Madonna could have hung up her corset long ago and she would still be one of the most successful live acts of all time. But she continues to push herself – and us. Her latest trek, the career-spanning Celebration Tour, will wrap up with a historic free show at Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on May 4. The concert will be broadcast live on TV Globo and will likely see Madonna performing for her biggest audience to date – more than 40 years into her career.

To get in on the celebration, we’ve ranked all 12 of Madonna’s boundary-busting tours.

The Virgin Tour (1985)

Madonna

Madonna’s very first tour was propelled, like most things related to the queen, almost entirely on the strength of her sheer force of will — and, of course, her raw talent. A magnetic and skilled performer (that toss and catch of the tambourine!), Madonna sprinted through a relatively short setlist culled largely from her first two albums, dancing and belting out hits like “Into the Groove” and “Burning Up” like her rent was due yesterday. But she didn’t need to worry about paying the bills for long: When the tour kicked off in April 1985, she was playing modest theaters; two months later, she was performing to a sold-out crowd of Madonna wannabes at Madison Square Garden.

Who’s That Girl World Tour (1987)

Madonna

Compared to the Virgin Tour just two years earlier, Madonna stepped up the production values, choreography and theatricality for her first world (and stadium) tour. Dramatic performances of “Papa Don’t Preach,” “Live to Tell” and her then-most recent No. 1 on the Hot 100, “Who’s That Girl,” hinted at what was to come on future tours in terms of spectacle and ambition. Though it was only her second tour, Who’s That Girl would become the last of Madonna’s shows to resemble a conventional pop-rock concert.

Re-Invention World Tour (2004)

Madonna

Coming off of the commercial disappointment of her 2003 album American Life , Madonna returned to the place she’s always thrived: the stage. The Re-Invention Tour was nothing she hadn’t done before or wouldn’t do better in the future, but — for the first time in years — she was embracing her past, performing rocked-out renditions of early hits “Burning Up” and “Material Girl” with electric guitar in hand, and even reinventing a few fan favorites like “Hanky Panky” and “Deeper and Deeper.” As for the queen herself, she was in top form both vocally and physically.

Madame X Tour (2019-2020)

Madonna

Part jukebox musical, part avant-garde performance art and part standup special, the Madame X Tour revolved around a James Baldwin quote… and a typewriter. Yes, Madame X is a stenographer. The tour took place in theaters and opera houses instead of the usual arenas, offering a more intimate and interactive experience. Highlights included a jazzy version of “Human Nature,” a neo-noir restaging of “Vogue” and a crowd sing-along to the resistance anthem “I Rise.”

Rebel Heart Tour (2015-2016)

Madonna

A blend of Cirque du Soleil, Broadway and burlesque, the Rebel Heart Tour saw dancers swinging on 10-foot stilts, dressed as nuns on stripper poles and sliding down giant LED screens. As for Madonna, she seemed more at ease on stage than ever, playing the coy chanteuse a la Blond Ambition and strumming the ukulele to “True Blue” – the first time she’d performed the song in nearly three decades. In fact, Rebel Heart was heavier on the hits than any tour since Re-Invention, including a Latin-infused medley of classics “Dress You Up,” “Into the Groove” and “Lucky Star,” as well as a modern twist on “Material Girl.”

Sticky & Sweet Tour (2008-2009)

Madonna

After a first act that didn’t quite live up to the lofty standards Madonna had previously set, the Sticky & Sweet Tour eventually hit its stride. The ‘Gypsy’ and ‘Rave’ segments in particular – including an electrifying rendition of “La Isla Bonita” featuring Ukrainian group Kolpakov Trio and a heavy metal version of “Hung Up,” which ended with Madonna shredding her guitar to Pantera’s “A New Level” – were as exhilarating as any of her previous tours’ best moments.

The Celebration Tour (2023-2024)

Madonna

Madonna’s latest tour is the sight and sound of a legend fully embracing her legacy. With no new album to promote, the setlist is packed with so many iconic songs – including a handful she’s never performed on tour before, such as “Bedtime Story” and “Bad Girl” – that more than a dozen of her 28 top 5 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 had to be omitted. A musical recounting of the Queen of Pop’s life and career, the Celebration Tour touches on her rise to fame in New York, the AIDS crisis (via a stirring rendition of “Live to Tell”), the media backlash she suffered in the early ‘90s and her spiritual rebirth, in which she rises like an AI phoenix on a glowing cube and — quicker than a ray of light — soars above the crowd. Masterful.

Drowned World Tour (2001)

Madonna

Pioneered by bands like U2, live concerts had moved closer to multimedia presentations in the years since The Girlie Show in 1993, and Madonna fully embraced the artistic potential that new technology allowed. For her first tour in eight years, Madonna pulled out all of the stops: smoke machines, acrobatic stunts, line-dancing, even Japanese anime. And with only a handful of older songs making the cut – including tour staples “Holiday” and “Human Nature” – she proved she was still laser-focused on the present… and the future.

The MDNA Tour (2012)

Madonna

Coming on the heels of Madonna’s iconic halftime performance at Super Bowl XLVI, the maximalist MDNA Tour was one of her most ambitious, employing elaborate stage combat, slacklining, Tetris-style cubes that rose 16 feet above the stage and a backdrop of eight rotating video screens. It was also one of her most intense shows. At 54, Madonna was in peak form, performing intricate choreography in spiked stilettos nonstop for two hours straight. The only chance she had to take a breath was during a surprisingly poignant piano version of “Like a Virgin” … after which the air was literally squeezed from her lungs by a corset being tightened around her.

The Girlie Show (1993)

Madonna

Inspired by cabaret and classic Hollywood musicals, The Girlie Show was a visual tour-de-force. The second act, dubbed ‘Studio 54,’ rivaled the ‘Religious’ segment from Blond Ambition for sheer catharsis, with the freedom of the orgiastic disco era (“Deeper and Deeper”) juxtaposed with the subsequent AIDS crisis (“In This Life”), as well as a captivating fever dream of choreography set to a remix of “Justify My Love.” Madonna was in fine voice throughout, growling her way through “Express Yourself” and harmonizing beautifully on “Rain.” She’s never had a better live band, either — and even mused about collaborating with them on an album, though it sadly never materialized.

Blond Ambition World Tour (1990)

Madonna

With its elaborate costumes (courtesy of French designer Jean-Paul Gaultier), Broadway-style sets (designed by Madonna’s brother Christopher Ciccone) and quasi-narrative arc, the Blond Ambition Tour is the blueprint – the mother of the modern pop concert. The show infamously found Madonna exorcising herself of the guilt of her Catholic upbringing. The ‘Religious’ segment, which began with the singer simulating masturbation and ended with her facing the judgment of the male authority figures in her life (her father, the Pope, God), is among the most audaciously conceived and impeccably executed moments of stagecraft in touring history.

Confessions Tour (2006)

Madonna

The Confessions Tour snags the top spot on our list for two reasons. First, it served as a culmination of everything Madonna had learned from Blond Ambition through Re-Invention, combining spectacle, drama and good ol’ fashioned performance mojo. Like its namesake, 2005’s Grammy-winning Confessions on a Dance Floor , the show struck a deft balance between dance-party hedonism and intimate introspection. Madonna’s 2000 Hot 100 chart-topper “Music” was transformed into a roller-disco fantasia, while a haunting rendition of “Live to Tell” saw the veteran provocateur suspended from a giant disco-fied cross in order to shine a light on the plight of AIDS in Africa.

Most importantly, Confessions was Madonna’s most cohesive and consistently thrilling show to date. Musical director Stuart Price skillfully arranged and remixed early hits like “Erotica” and “Like a Virgin” to fit the Eurodisco aesthetic of Confessions . Plus, each act of the show was a visual and aural smorgasbord, from the opening equestrian segment, which found Madonna emerging from a giant glitter ball and commanding a stripper-poll-cum-carousel-horse, to the extended finale, which mashed up “Lucky Star” and “Hung Up” into a nearly 15-minute explosion of ear and eye candy.
