We went on the Sea Princess Cruise on a Sunday afternoon. It worked out wonderfully as we did not make minute to minute plans during our trip and we found this fabulous outing by boat. We really enjoyed the tour of the different islands and the stop in Little Cranberry Island with only 75 winter residents. It's entertaining and educational, the perfect combination. I highly recommend this tour when visiting the area!

We did the sunset cruise in July 2022 and love it! For $30 this is a great option for a quick boat tour around the islands. We were able to see some osprey nests as well as some seals. Even though we went in July it got quite cold on the boat so definitely bring layers as it will get quite chilly. We were able to bring some snacks/ dinner on board and eat them while listening to the tour guide. A lot of the seats were already taken about a half hour before the tour started so if you want the premium seating closer to the tour guide and up front (with no one in front of you to get in the way of pictures) definitely get there a little early!

My husband and I took the morning cruise yesterday and were so pleasantly surprised at what a wonderful experience it was. Mike was our narrator and he explained every little detail as we sailed along. We normally take one or two different boat tours, and I have to say we learned more with Mike than during any other tour in the past 4 years. He encouraged every passenger to introduce themselves to each other and tell a little something about themselves. He also took the time to talk with every passenger on the boat He was very knowledgable about all the different wild life we came across. We will definitely take this boat tour again. The location of the pier in Northeast Harbor is so much more relaxing than in busy Bar Harbor. The little town is a really quaint place to catch lunch or coffee and shop. The traffic is much more manageable and easy to navigate.

We had a blast during our Sea Princess Cruises tour around Bar Harbor, visiting Cranberry Island and learning about the history of this gorgeous place. Our tour guide was very welcoming and friendly, and made the tour feel like a once in a lifetime experience. The tour started on time and ended on time as well. It was very affordable, and I think we got an amazing deal! Weather that day was pretty rough, but the team still made the tour enjoyable and kept us engaged. My only advice would be on clothing and seating. We did the tour in September and were not expecting it to get as cold as it did, so make sure you layer up. In terms of seating - I recommend sitting close to the tour guide, otherwise it will be very difficult to hear anything (even more so during Covid when everyone has masks).

Great time. I thought I would be bored out of my mind, but afternoon cruise was great. Our guide,Mike, was friendly, smart, and talked us thru the entire trip. This may have been the highlight of our trip to Bar Harbor. A great time!

Photo of K N.

A mostly enjoyable cruise. Saw plenty of wildlife and heard interesting facts from our guide. Unfortunately there was lax enforcement of the required masks. There needs to be more of a spiel about it prior to departure and a warning to leave people on Cranberry Island if they can't comply. Otherwise, it would have been 5 stars.

Photo of Lydia W.

Although it was a foggy day the narrator was a natural story teller and made the cruise interesting and fun. Lovely views of the less visited area of Acadia Park. Saw sea lions and osprey. Visited an isolated lobster village and the views of soms fjord was lovely.

Photo of Tyler B.

Overall an enjoyable boat ride. It was a beautiful day we had out on the water. We saw seals, porpoises, osprey, & lobster boats in action-hauling in their traps. A different perspective of the coastline was appreciated after days driving in the car. A leisurely 3 hours for all ages to enjoy. I'd like to add that the narrator Winston was so sweet and the captain was very approachable as well and even let my boyfriend step into the pilot house for a chat during the tour.

A highlight of our trip. The tour itself was calm and enjoyable. We were worried about sea sickness but the harbor is calm and we rarely hit waves. The guide was excellent, comical, and insightful. He guide was a retired park ranger for over thirty years, so he knew very much and could answer the majority of the questions. I would recommend sitting in the middle section as you may get some exhaust fumes in the back and not much of a view in the front. Bring a wind breaker; blankets are provided on the boat if needed. You will take about an hour ride to Little Cranberry Island and about another hour ride back. Little Cranberry has a lobster shack, church, National Park museum, and a post office where you can buy homemade ginger bread (delicious). I believe there was a bathroom on the boat, but they recommend waiting until the island. You can also watch lobster fishermen bring in the day's catches at the dock. Overall, highly recommend and would do it again. Be sure to tip!

Photo of Wei X.

We took the 10am cruise, our park ranger is great, very knowledgeable, told us about the history and lifestyle of ME. The museum on the little cranberry island is a little disappointed, it's a tiny museum, not much to see. We saw two osprey nests, two whales, birds

Passengers waiting to board the Isleford Historic and Scenic Cruise tour boat

While Little Cranberry Island is not part of Acadia National Park, Sea Princess Cruises in conjunction with the National Park Service operates a 3-hour Isleford Historic and Scenic Cruise to the island so that participants can disembark and walk around the town of Isleford to see what modern life is like on a small island in Maine. The cruise operates on a daily basis from late May through mid-October. There is a fee, and tickets can be purchased on the Sea Princess website. Choose TOURS from the main menu, then Acadia National Park Morning Cruise , which is usually guided by a National Park Service Ranger. Sea Princess also has an afternoon cruise to Little Cranberry that is hosted by their own guide. Other than that, the itinerary is the same.

Unlike the other National Park Service boat tours that depart from Bar Harbor where parking is next to impossible to find, the Isleford Historic and Scenic Cruise departs from Northeast Harbor at an easy to access marina with plenty of free parking in the General Parking Lot next to the tennis courts (there is a permit parking area as well). Once there, look for the Visitor Information building, one of two at the dock. Inside you can purchase a ticket or register that you have arrived if you booked a ticket online. There is no pre-registration deadline, so you can jump on board up until the boat pulls away from the dock (Sea Princess does suggest arriving a half hour before the departure time is possible).

While the tour ultimately stops at Little Cranberry Island, for me the fun was just cruising the bay and taking in the sights. The park Ranger narrates the tour all the way to the island, pointing out the owners of various mansions along the shore, discussing the lobster industry, and providing information about the natural history of the area.

The tour passes the Bear Island Lighthouse on Bear Island. A lighthouse has stood on this spot since 1839, though the current lighthouse was built in 1889. The National Park Service acquired the property in 1987 and now leases it out to a private individual who lives in the lightkeeper’s house, also built in 1889.

Another interesting feature is an osprey nest that first appeared in the 1920s; it is no longer used. Another similar nest that weighed close to a ton was removed by the Coast Guard. The bird poop basically formed a cement, and those removing it had to wear HAZMAT suits.

There are plenty of “cottages” along the shore. Of course you’d have to be very rich to call one of these a cottage, for they are mansions to everyone else.

There is a large lobster industry in Maine, and you’ll see many lobster boats in the harbor. The overfishing of cod, the main predator of lobsters, has allowed lobsters to thrive in these waters. The Ranger said that the seabed is crawling with them, yet the price of a lobster dinner, even on Mount Desert Island, is sky high. It is interesting to note that back in the early 1800s that lobster was considered a junk fish in New England and only eaten by the poor. It wasn’t until New Yorkers and Bostonians of the mid-1800s began to eat them that lobster became a delicacy. This was also around the time that refrigeration made it possible to transport live lobsters to these major cities.

The boat passes a few spots where seals like to sun themselves, but none were around when we passed by. However, I did see some in the water.

I wasn’t as thrilled about the stop on Little Cranberry Island. There is no guided tour, so participants are just left to wander on their own for an hour. You have two choices: visit the Isleford Historical Museum or walk around the island. I’m not sure if there is time to do both thoroughly. Even though the National Park Service helps sponsor the museum, I decided to spend my time exploring. If you don’t get back before the boat departs, you will be left behind. Water taxis service the island, but you’ll have to foot the bill for one.

There are no shops other than a small general store at the local post office building, but there is a church that was built in 1898 that is open.

The most interesting feature of the church is a stained glass window that is dedicated to local residents who fought in the War for the Union . This is one of the many names for what we now call the Civil War , a term that wasn’t widely used until the early 1900s.

There are around eighty permanent residents on Little Cranberry Island. Fishing is the primary industry, particularly lobstering. Roughly a third of the residents work as lobstermen. The dock is populated with lobster boats, and traps are piled high everywhere you look.

Of the four boat tours offered by the National Park Service, I took the trip to Isleford and Baker Island. I missed my boat for the Frenchman Bay Tour because I couldn’t find parking in Bar Harbor. Of the two, I prefer the Baker Island Cruise , as it was guided throughout, and the history is a little more interesting. However, the time spent on the water is enjoyable no matter which tour you take.

Bar Harbor, Maine

Description.

Nestled in Maine's Frenchman Bay on Mount Desert Island lies the quaint town of Bar Harbor. The wealthy have flocked to the area since the early 1900s, making it a fashionable summer resort filled with Newport-style "cottages," though many were razed in a catastrophic fire in 1947. As you approach the shore, gaze upon the many unique lighthouses still standing guard over 3,478 miles of Maine's coast. Bar Harbor is the gateway to Acadia National Park, established 1919 and one of the most visited national parks in America. A haven for nature lovers, its 35,000 acres are home to sea-scoured shores, forested mountains and rocky cliffs overlooking sparkling lakes. You can cycle, drive, hike or trot by horse-drawn carriage through the park's postcard-perfect scenery and along 27-mile Park Loop Road that ribbons around the island and wends its way up to the summit of Cadillac Mountain. And you can't leave Maine's shores without feasting on a traditional "downeast" meal, a lobster bake with all the trimmings.

More about Bar Harbor, Maine Points of Interest

A cluster of islands encompassing over 47,000 acres of rugged shoreline, evergreen forests, and mountain summits. Acadia, once the summer home of America's mercantile aristocracy, today is an outdoor paradise for nature lovers.

Meandering through Acadia, this magnificent scenic drive begins at Hulls Cove, loops around Mount Desert Island and wends its way up to the summit of Cadillac Mountain.

Composed of pink granite and towering 1,532 feet, Cadillac Mountain is the tallest point along the eastern coast of the United States and offers awe-inspiring views of Bar Harbor, Frenchman Bay, and the Cranberry Islands.

This small inlet carved out of rocks is famous for its thunderous clap when seawater crashes in the air and water is forced out as high as 40 feet. Taking a photo? Prepare to get wet!

Tucked on the east side of the island, this quaint village was once the playground of the rich and famous; many of the opulent mansions from the Gilded Age can be seen along Main Street.

Plucked fresh from the coastal waters off Maine, lobster is the star and undisputed king of dinner. The locally dubbed "downeast" meal also includes corn on the cob, potatoes, and all the trimmings.

Named for the tart red berries that grow in nearby bogs, the islands are comprised of five islands, each with its own general store, post office, church, historical society, and school.

Illuminating Maine's rugged, sometimes treacherous coast, many of these stately and unique lighthouses still stand guard over 3,478 miles of the shoreline.

Cancellations within 24 hours of trip departure (72 hours for groups of 15 or more) are non-refundable. Please notify us if you need to cancel or reschedule. If we cancel any trip due to our discretion: weather, unsafe conditions, or insufficient reservations, a full refund will be provided. We reserve the right to cancel any departure if we have insufficient reservations. We will do all we can to reschedule or accommodate guests reserved on any departure with insufficient reservations.

  • Chevron down Arrival Time

All guests should arrive at our ticket window (26 Sea Street, Northeast Harbor ME 04662) 30 minutes prior to their trip’s scheduled departure time to collect tickets and provide any outstanding payment.

  • Chevron down What To Bring

Guests are encouraged to bring an extra layer or two of clothing as it tends to be cooler and breezier on the water.  We do have blankets for sale at our ticketbooth but would encourage you to bring your own as needed. Food and beverages are not provided, but can be brought aboard in small quantities (please no glass bottles). Hiking shoes are not necessary, but comfortable shoes are advised for casual walking. Items such as small strollers or carriers for infants and small children may be brought on board as space allows.

  • Chevron down Pets

Small friendly lap dogs are allowed if they remain leashed.

  • Chevron down Where To Go On Arrival

Once at the town marina in Northeast Harbor guests should check in at the ticket booth located at the front of the visitor center (grey building next to the tennis courts).

  • Chevron down Handicap Accessibility

The Sea Princess is not large enough to offer full handicap access. Guests must be able to walk up/down a few steps in order to load and unload the vessel. Also please note that depending on the tide the ramps leading to our docks can be quite steep.

  • Chevron down Parking

Parking is free of charge and located around the tennis courts at the town marina. If in the rare circumstances that those lots are full, the ticket booth attendant can help provide further direction.

  • Chevron down Food

There are a number of restaurants located in Northeast Harbor that provide sit-down, or to-go options. Also, for quick food to grab and take aboard, the Colonel’s Deli or Pine Tree Market are located on Main Street and are good options (time allowing). Arriving ½ hour before departure does not provide sufficient time to order food and make it back to the boat comfortably, so plan accordingly. There are some options for small food items on Little Cranberry Island during the duration of our stop on those respective trips.

  • Chevron down Reservations

Advance reservations are not required but are highly recommended, particularly during peak season.

  • Chevron down Is Seasickness a Problem?

No, we operate in some of the most protected waters in this area so seas are usually minimal.

  • Chevron down Will We See Whales or Puffins?

No, our cruise stays in calm and protected water and does not take you far enough out into open waters for these animals to be visible. However, we typically do see seals either basking on the ledges or frolicking in the water.

  • Chevron down Weather and Cancellation Policy

In the event of questionable weather conditions, guests may call the ticket booth to check on tour operation. Generally, unless the captain determines that conditions would jeopardize the safety of our guests, our cruises will run assuming sufficient reservations. We reserve the right to cancel any trip and will do our best to provide ample notice to reserved guests.

This isn’t your grandma’s history lesson; this is a time-traveling adventure more immersive than a Revolutionary War reenactment. Discover the allure of Norfolk, VA, where the captivating waterfront, lively cultural offerings, and the opportunity to explore the historic USS Wisconsin battleship await you. From Norfolk, you can make a pit stop in Yorktown, VA—it's not just a dot on the map; it's your gateway to the wonders of Colonial Williamsburg and Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement in the Americas. And hold onto your tricorn hat because the excitement doesn't stop there. Charleston, Boston, and Halifax are on the lineup, offering up 10- and 11-day historical excursions.

Voyage through the chapters of American history

If you're itching to delve even deeper into the roots of this great nation, Princess presents their Historic America cruisetour. Spend seven nights on land uncovering the treasures of Washington D.C., Thomas Jefferson's Monticello estate, Colonial Williamsburg, and the legendary Gettysburg Battlefield. In Philadelphia, visit Independence Hall, ring the Liberty Bell, and stand where Thomas Jefferson penned the Declaration of Independence. It's more than an experience; it’s a voyage through history.

Mist and marvels in Canada

For mist, marvels, and a delicious dose of Canadian history, you’re going to be captivated by Princess’ Maple Explorer cruisetour . Sail into the thunderous mist of Niagara Falls, where nature puts on a show like no other. Get drenched in the thrill of the falls before embarking on a historic journey through Canada's gems. First stop—Old Québec, the original walled city in North America. Walk its cobblestone streets, and you'll practically hear the whispers of the past echoing around you. This city's got stories, and it's ready to spill them.

Making waves in the Arctic

Princess is making big moves with its exclusive sailings to the coolest spot on the map—Greenland! As the only cruise line offering itineraries that explore multiple towns on the island, Princess is charting new waters with these unforgettable journeys. And trust us, the world's largest island is remote, rich, and ready to wow you. Departing from Boston, board Emerald Princess® for a unique, 17-day-long expedition that marries the best of the East Coast with three day-long visits to jaw-dropping ports in Greenland. Qaqortoq serves up scenic fjords that'll make your jaw drop even further. Nuuk is like stepping into a fairytale with storybook cottages straight out of a Hans Christian Andersen tale. And Nanortalik? It's a stroll through fields so colorful, that even rainbows would be jealous. With opportunities to view massive glaciers, experience vibrant culture, and do some out-of-this-world sightseeing, think of it as a love affair with nature that'll make all of your other vacations green with envy!

Sail, sip, and save!
