As golf booms, will traditional attire relax here's what gen z golfers had to say., share this article.

chang gen z golf tour

Golf is a game built on tradition. It is a sport defined by respect and rules of etiquette that span attire, behavior and care for the course. During a culture-shifting year like 2020, these norms were challenged with the goal of bringing change to golf.

Clubs like Augusta National and professional golfers like Cameron Champ promoted diversity and initiated conversations about making the sport visually represent the United States, but these actions only mark the beginning of a cultural and demographic shift that is overdue.

That’s where the next generation steps in.

This next generation of golfers and golf leaders is already comfortable addressing the status quo in golf.  Members of Generation Z, born from the late 1990s through the mid-2010s, are already thinking about how the sport is changing and how they want the game they love to be perceived by future generations.

While all under the age of 30, their insights and experiences speak of where the sport is headed in the areas of distance, traditional fashion and most importantly, diversity.

This is part three of a three-part series analyzing Gen Z’s perception of the changing landscape of golf. Read Part I here and Part II here .

The hoodie debate and golf fashion

Who knew a hoodie could cause such controversy? Not Tyrrell Hatton.

When the 29-year-old wore an Adidas hoodie for the final round of the BMW PGA Championship in October — which he won — it wasn’t his performance that was discussed in the days that followed. It was his attire. Despite how he played that final round to win the European Tour’s flagship event and boost himself into the top 10 in the Official World Golf Ranking for the first time, his appearance became a major talking point.

The disgruntled reaction to his fashion choice elicited a few eye rolls, but few surprised faces.

At its core, golf is a game of tradition and etiquette. Players remove their hats post round and shake hands. The backdrop is, for the most part, quiet. Respect is often communicated through dress code. But how many of these traditional rules are vital to the integrity of the game and how many are simply exclusionary?

On the topic of apparel in golf, Mr. Style weighed in.

“I find it absurd that we have a discussion about someone wearing a hoodie on a golf course. … The establishment has always represented, ‘Let’s keep the status quo. Change is not good,’ and I just think it’s sort of a parent-child type of relationship,” said Marty Hackel, the longtime fashion editor at Golf Digest. “The older generation thinks they’re preserving the game is making the game more exclusionary.

“They’re not helping, they’re hurting.”

Hackel knows golf fashion. The 77-year-old said the vehemence over Hatton’s hoodie proves why so many are turned off from the sport.

“The same people that are against the hoodie are the people who are hurting growing the game because they keep making it exclusionary rather than welcoming,” Hackel said.

Rounds of golf have increased significantly this year with golf being designated as a safe outdoor activity during the coronavirus pandemic. The National Golf Foundation and Golf Datatech reported 2020 will end with approximately a 12-percent increase in rounds played in the United States over 2019’s total, equal to an increase of 50 million rounds.

In a time when safe group activities are few, the game has attracted new players as well as those who are rediscovering the sport with newfound time. This growth benefits the sport on an economic level during a year with record unemployment and economic despair, but will the new player boom have longevity? Will those new to a sport heavy on tradition, including attire, feel welcomed?

Korn Fery Tour player Ryan Ruffels, 22, shares Hackel’s opinion surrounding the absurdity of the hoodie debate that Hatton unwittingly sparked. Ruffels even saw a direct correlation from the conversation of fashion in golf to the need to promote inclusivity.

“The etiquette and the culture around golf, I think that has to evolve if we’re going to include more and more people from different walks of life,” Ruffels said. “Different places there’s going to be different cultures, different traditions, different ways of doing things and a younger crowd as well, they’re not going to be as keen to jump into a sport where they feel like they’ve have to dress like old men or tuck their shirt and all the time wear V-neck sweaters.

“That’s cool and certain environments and stuff, but I think for the most part the world just becomes a little bit more progressive as time goes on and sure there are certain traditions in golf that need to be respected and all that sort of stuff, but nobody’s wearing anything trashy, anything that looks disrespectful.”

University of Michigan player Hailey Borja, 19, shares the progressive mindset of her Gen Z peers. She loves the innovation of women’s fashion like Lululemon shirts with a small collar as opposed to the traditional full-collar polo and empathizes with men wanting to wear shorts on sweltering competition days (currently, players competing on the PGA Tour and its feeder tours can only wear shorts during a practice round, a change that was made in 2019).

At its core, Borja said, golf is built on tradition and respect. But she doesn’t fully agree with opening the floodgates on what attire is welcome on the course.

“It’s the 21st century and people are being more open about things and accepting but I think there’s still should be some traditional formalwear and how it was back in the day,” Borja said.

So where is the line between maintaining the traditions the game was built upon while still welcoming players from young generations into the sport?

The solution for each challenge is time, openness and a willingness for the sport to evolve based on what’s best for the longevity of the game. Younger generations’ desire for golf to evolve doesn’t mean they want to entirely upend it.

Each young golfer interviewed had a passion for the game built on respect and tradition, but at the same time, each wanted more for the sport. By adding the elements of diversity, excitement and inclusion and taking away unnecessary divisions, they’re working to build a game that will continue to stand the test of time.

“Personally I know I’m younger, I know I’m 22 and speaking from that perspective, but I think we have to loosen up a little bit,” Ruffels said.

Golf's Fashion Influence In Culture tiger woods malbon streetwear golf golfwear netflix full swing docuseries

The sport of golf is experiencing an evolution never seen before, especially amongst newer players and curious Gen Z enthusiasts. While golf’s reputation is steeped in tradition with its exclusive club memberships for the affluent and rigid course rules, today’s game has seen more dynamic transformations. Names like Top Golf and Five Iron Golf have made the game more fun and accessible for casual players who want to play alongside friends and other beginners – think of arcade and bowling atmospheres but with golf. In Netflix’s new documentary Full Swing , the series highlights Phoenix, Arizona’s WM Phoenix Open , a competition tour that emphasizes fun – the tournament is unlike any other, because of its millennial fans, young players and non-stop party environment. Unlike other PGA TOUR events, Phoenix Open attendees are allowed to yell, heckle and cheer golfers on at the 16th hole, treating the game almost like an NBA playoff match-up. These newer, more exciting versions of how golf is played is where the sport is heading and its reputation is shifting with the times in terms of inclusivity, accessibility and even its fashion identity.

Golf's Fashion Influence In Culture tiger woods malbon streetwear golf golfwear netflix full swing docuseries

Golf is also gaining steam amongst Gen Zers because of the sport’s evolving fashion influence. Prim polo shirts and impeccably ironed slacks have dominated the circuit because of golf’s high-brow traditions. But a new generation of players, and most importantly, golf wear brands, have entered the scene to break the sport’s bland, and often stuffy, fashion scene. Rather than plain polos and the occasional patterned trousers, some streetwear-minded labels have given golf’s usual uniforms a striking update with abstract-patterned shirts, logo-heavy hoodies, patchworked varsity jackets and even sneaker-inspired golf shoes.

Golf's Fashion Influence In Culture tiger woods malbon streetwear golf golfwear netflix full swing docuseries

Golf’s influence on mainstream fashion has never really broken ground, until now. Retrospectively, mainstream’s fashion influence on the sport is picking up steam. Pro-golfer and model Paris Hilinski , for example, is an Oakley ambassador and can be seen wearing luxury labels like Off-White and Louis Vuitton on her Instagram. American golfer Collin Morikawa , who is also profiled in Netflix’s Full Swing , continues to work with adidas on his personal on and off course styling and also has a collaborative line with the brand. “I want to make things that are accessible and can be worn not just on the golf course, but everywhere,” Morikawa said in a Golf Digest interview. “I think that’s the biggest thing. I’m a fairly casual person. I love T-shirts and shorts wherever I go, growing up in LA. If we can bring that, but elevate it just enough so that it passes on the golf course, but looks sleek and casual still, I’m all for that with Adidas.” The sport has entered the age of individuality and self expression, and a lot of golf’s newer enthusiasts are looking to stand out through what they wear both on and off the course. A look back at the sport’s evolving attire gives a better view of its often too proper fashion scene. Additionally, some moments in its storied existence also paint a better clue of where golf fashion is heading.

Golf's Fashion Influence In Culture tiger woods malbon streetwear golf golfwear netflix full swing docuseries

In the late 1960s to 1970s, golf had steered away from players wearing full blazers, long stockings, and flat caps. During this period, pros started sporting a more casual attire with pastel-colored knitted polos and knit cardigans. High-waisted pleated trousers and oxford shoes accompanied these looks, giving golf fashion a new direction. The mid-late 1970s to the 1980s was the era of loud patterns and colors. Vibrant pastels, plaid prints and houndstooth patterns on polos and trousers became the norm. Also highlighted on the PGA TOUR during this time were flared polyester trousers, mock neck turtlenecks, sweaters, and sweater vests. The bold colors and patterns from the ‘70s made its way into the ‘80s with the addition of baggy crew neck sweaters, which came in neutral hues to contrast the bold pastels. The emergence of a young Tiger Woods in the ‘90s pushed golf into the mainstream and influenced a newer crop of golfers to take on the sport. Suddenly, fans took on Woods’ influential style with brands like Nike , a label that was never really associated with the sport of golf until The Swoosh signed Woods as an ambassador. Additionally, traditional golf brands like TaylorMade and Callaway started outfitting their pros with more modern pieces too such as baggy polos, visors, hats and loose trousers. Golf wear on the course was evolving in reaction to the Tiger Woods phenomena alongside Nike, and performance-lead apparel started to dominate with elements like sweat-wicking fabrics, breathable materials and performance-driven golf shoes.

Golf's Fashion Influence In Culture tiger woods malbon streetwear golf golfwear netflix full swing docuseries

In addition to Woods and in contrast to more modern performance designs, pro English player Ian Poulter has also impacted golf fashion with his “old world” style – he’s renowned for his excessively loud printed trousers, British flag-emblazoned tops and shiny fabric ensembles. Profiled in Netflix’s Full Swing documentary, Poulter is described as someone who has brought edge and excitement to tournaments. “I didn’t just want to be a golfer,” Poulter says in the series. “I wanted to be my own personality.” Poulter’s style echoes the rebellious spirit of the past, influenced by players like Payne Stewart who was a golf fashion trailblazer. Stewart also wore loud prints, baggy trousers and a signature flat cap and he in some way opened the doors for more expressive clothing in the game. With golf now entering, the post Tiger Woods Nike era, millennials and Gen Zers are now keen on giving the sport a facelift through fashion. Fashion has basically become a gateway into the sport amongst the younger generation and new lifestyle-forward brands have brought their own take on golf attire. Brands such as Malbon , Metalwood Studio and Eastside Golf are changing the narrative of what golf attire can look like on the course. “A lot of these new brands are giving golfers and amateurs options, ” says Cole Young, founder of Metalwood Studio. “For so many years, my only options were TravisMathew, G/FORE and Peter Millar. Those were the three alternatives I had if I didn’t want to wear Nike, adidas, or Puma.”

Golf's Fashion Influence In Culture tiger woods malbon streetwear golf golfwear netflix full swing docuseries

Established in LA, Malbon bridges the gap between streetwear and golf by collaborating with brands like Polo Ralph Lauren , HUF , Girl Skateboards , and New Balance . Through its range of knit and outerwear offerings, the brand also pays homage to vintage golf aesthetics from the ‘60’s. Eastside Golf is a brand that brings different influences to the sport, casting a broader net to potential enthusiasts. The brand offers garments that are influenced by basketball and black culture, with a logo of a Black golfer wearing a gold chain and hat. Its ethos “Be Authentic” translates to the course with pros and amateurs expressing themselves by wearing a colorfully-printed polo or more casual attire. Eastside offers those cultural influences on the sport’s traditional polo trousers, hats, and visors. Notably, the brand had a major collaboration with Jordan, giving an updated take on cardigans and making performance hoodies, t-shirts, polo shirts, and even retro Jordan sneakers. Vintage athleisure wear has been a growing trend in fashion and we are seeing that trend spread into golf, especially with pieces coming from the late ‘90s and early 2000s. Metalwood Studio is a brand based in California founded by Cole Young, who enjoys and appreciates that era of golf. The brand harnesses the style of those times by designing more relaxed pants and baggy polos. “So Metalwood, in its very core DNA, really romanticizes the least fashionable era of golf in a normcore ironic way,” Young explains. “So we are trying to make the largest pleated pants and the baggiest polo possible.” Through these off-key, retro designs, Metalwood Studios also gives vintage fashion fans a path to what the sport has to offer.

Golf's Fashion Influence In Culture tiger woods malbon streetwear golf golfwear netflix full swing docuseries

Golf clearly has a lot to offer the fashion world in terms of more lifestyle-based designs. While technical products and more performance-driven styles have dominated the scene for casual players, brands like Malbon, Metalwood Studio and Eastside Golf offer more versatile options for younger appreciators of the sport. The days of regular polos and golf slacks aren’t going anywhere but printed T-shirts, baggy hoodies and sneaker-like golf shoes will soon become the norm, too. Having more options in golf attire is opening up the game to broader audiences and bridging different cultures and niches to the sport. You can watch the immersive golf documentary series, Full Swing, now streaming only on Netflix .

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.
