Ron Sexsmith (born January 8, 1964) is a critically acclaimed Canadian songwriter and vocalist, known for his candid intimacy and high-profile admirers, hailing from St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada.

By the age of 17 Sexsmith was playing regularly in a local bar in St. Catharines, Ontario, however, formed his first band three years before that at the age of 14. Raised in the area surrounding Niagara Falls, the singer-songwriter soon made a name for himself as the “One-Man Jukebox” being able to play a host of requests yelled at him from the audience. Following the birth of his first child in 1985, Sexsmith began writing his own songs and shortly after released the cassette “Out of the Duff” with fellow singer-songwriter Claudio. Sexsmith and family subsequently moved to Toronto, where the singer released the full-length cassette “There’s a Way” in 1986, produced by Kurt Swinghammer.

Following an open mic event, Sexsmith became aquatinted with Bob Wiseman who agreed to produced the singer’s next release. However, with incompatible schedules, the folk and pop singer’s album “Grand Opera Lane” wasn’t released until 1991. Independently released, the record produced the notable song “Speaking with the Angel”, and led Sexsmith to sign a deal to release his self-titled album in 1995. The full-length “Ron Sexsmith” was issued by Interscope/Warner in 1995, produced by Mitchell Froom and Daniel Lanois. Around this time the singer was praised for his songwriting accolades by Elvis Costello, and opened for the music star on his North American tour.

Sexsmith succeeded his self-titled release with “Other Songs” in 1997 and “Whereabouts” in 1999, after which the singer left Interscope/Warner and signed with Nettwerk Records. The full-length “Cobblestone Runway” arrived in October 2002 featuring Chris Martin on the bonus track “Gold in Them Hills”, after which he released the compilation album “Rarities” on Linus Entertainment. The 2004 album “Retriever” was a more pop influenced album and was dedicated to Elliott Smith and Johnny Cash, both of whom Sexsmith's music is indebted to. “Destination Unknown” followed in 2005 marked by its pure acoustic sound with fellow musician Donn Kerr, after which arrived “Time Being” in 2006, and “Exit Strategy of the Soul” in 2008.

The respected singer-songwriter’s 10th studio album, “Long Player Late Bloomer”,was produced by heavy metal producer Bob Rock, and issued in early 2011. In 2013 the full-length “Forever Endeavour” earned its release on Cooking Vinyl Records, followed two years later by “Carousel One”.

Live reviews

Ron Sexsmith is a Canadian artist who specializes in pop and rock songs. His concerts are really great. Ron Sexsmith plays from his nearly dozen albums extensively. My favorite songs come off his album “Rarities” and “Retriever” and he plays pretty heavily from these. His stage presence and set up is pretty normal with his guitar and microphone up front. Sometimes, there is an additional person or a backup band behind him, but normally the focus is squarely on Ron Sexsmith.

He has a decent record of interacting with the audience because he has been known to take requests. Sexsmith also routinely wears the same basic outfit for all of his concerts. Usually, his shirt is a flannel variety (or a plain color) with jeans. His demeanor is generally one of pride. When you are there, the songs and the environment provoke a variety of feelings. The songs touch your heart and soul, making feel that the tickets were worth the price of admission.

I think the only drawback is the limited range of Ron Sexsmith’s tours! In the past year or two, he has pretty much only toured through Ontario in Canada. Those from elsewhere have to make the trek to see him, though I can attest that the trip will definitely be worth it!

Report as inappropriate

Ron Sexsmith is a Canadian born rock singer and songwriter. His performances are always notably intimate, in line with his style of music, and this was no exception. The crowd was modest but devoted, they were all clear fans and recognised the entire set list. His music is not one for dancing along to, but is meant to be quietly appreciated. His music is emotive and moving, partly through the melodies and partly through the poetic lyrics that Sexsmith weaves. Each song was genuinely moving and heart touching. He performed all of his most well known tracks, from across the decades that he has been making music, and one of the songs I even recognised from The OC, which was a wonderful surprise for me and my nostalgia. ‘Maybe this Christmas’, ‘Secret Heart’, ‘Get in Line’, ‘Gold in Them Hills’ and ‘Strawberry Blonde’ were all sang to the delight of the crowd and were all performed in beautiful arrangement. While these songs were some of the highlights of the show, they were by no means the only good tracks sung as Sexsmith’s whole set list was fantastic and every song moving.

Good gig by ron. he was well received by the audience as always. as expected done a lot of the new album and missed some of the older ones totally which was a let down as the new album is just average at best. Excellent when solo on the piano though. The new band members were good and made for a good show.

Ron Sexsmith turns out to be the night’s gift after throwing himself a 60th birthday party at Massey Hall

Brad Wheeler

When it comes to sweet-hearted balladeers, the singular Sexsmith is Canada’s invisible man. Kerry Vergeer/Handout

An audience sang Happy Birthday to Ron Sexsmith at Massey Hall on Thursday. It wasn’t his birthday, quite – the cherished singer-songwriter was born on Jan. 8, 1964, in St. Catharines. Because Massey Hall wasn’t available on Jan. 8, 2024, Sexsmith celebrated his 60 years on Earth belatedly, on leap day as it happened.

Because it occurs only once every four years, leap day can be considered a free day – a strange day out of phase with the normal calendar, and a day when unordinary things could and should happen. “So it was that on the 29th day of February, at the beginning of the thaw,” H.G. Wells wrote in his 1897 sci-fi novel The Invisible Man , “this singular person fell out of infinity into Iping Village.”

When it comes to sweet-hearted balladeers, the singular Sexsmith is Canada’s invisible man.

If you don’t believe me, ask him. On his X account, the songwriter’s songwriter occasionally laments his standing. Recently the three-time Juno Award winner pointed out that he had not been nominated for one of those trophies since 2014. And festival bookers ignore him, he claims. “Sometimes it feels like I’m the outcast of the Canadian music scene,” he summed it up on social media this week.

He may have a point. Why this melodic savant and lyrical empath isn’t Canada’s James Taylor is an open question. Is he underappreciated? Maybe, but there were dozens of music industry people in the audience paying their respects at Massey Hall. So many complimentary tickets, one wonders whether promoter Live Nation turned a profit on the night.

The crowd applauded Sexsmith warmly when he walked on stage. The main attraction patted his heart in response. The heart! It’s his best weapon, more potent even than his catchy songcraft and pleasing, dulcet tenor.

Ron Sexsmith at Toronto's Danforth Music Hall, on March 29, 2022. Handout

Though his band would soon join him, he began solo with an acoustic guitar on For a Moment , a light ballad from the 2002 album Cobblestone Runaway . It’s about the spirituality of music, a reoccurring theme throughout his songbook.

I could hear it in the sky above

In the streets below me

I could hear it in the songs of love

Just enough to show me

There was a light somewhere, somewhere

Over the next two hours or so, the 60-year-old troubadour soothed an audience with charming songs of love, doubt and hope. The material fell under the heading of unhurried folk rock, light sixties pop (Burt Bacharach meets Ray Davies) and mid-seventies McCartney-inspired music. There was a comfortable mellowness and sentimentality to it all. Though he offered cuts from his latest album, last year’s The Vivian Line, this was a career retrospective.

He talked about being dropped by a record label at one point in his career, which caused him to focus on writing songs for other artists for a bit. He said his publisher had unsuccessfully pitched one ( Foolproof ) to Diana Krall and another ( Heavenly ) to Nikki Yanofsky. At Massey, guest Lori Cullen sang them both, with Sexsmith accompanying.

“Ron is a good songwriter,” Cullen told the crowd between numbers. “I feel we’re all on the same page here.”

ron sexsmith tour dates 2022

Why this melodic savant and lyrical empath isn’t Canada’s James Taylor is an open question. Blue Boy/Handout

Mostly, yes. Elton John and Elvis Costello are fans. Leslie Feist and Rod Stewart have covered his songs. New Yorker magazine has always supported Sexsmith, even if they once used the word “platitudinous” to describe his lyrics. (And fair enough there.)

Midway through the second set, Sexsmith rolled out what he cheekily referred to as “the songs you all grew up with.” Included were Whatever It Takes , Secret Heart and Brandy Alexander . They could have been hits in a number of different eras.

He said he wrote 1991′s Speaking With the Angel for his son, two years old at the time. It’s about innocence and being in tune with something unworldly, and it could just as well be about the songwriter himself.

He presented as thoroughly guileless – a gentle, sincere, intelligent creature dropped out of the sky from infinity, in his words, “half-man/half-melody.” Sexsmith, though one of this country’s greatest songwriters, was not built for today’s music industry. That is no fault of his own. In fact, quite the opposite.

Ron Sexsmith in Toronto, ON – Show Review

ron sexsmith tour dates 2022

Who: Ron Sexsmith When: March 29, 2022 Where: Danforth Music Hall, Toronto ON

On an otherwise idle Tuesday evening in Toronto’s east end, Canada’s own Ron Sexsmith honored the stage at the Danforth Music Hall and played two absolutely spectacular sets.

Sexsmith took the stage alongside his acoustic guitar and piano and played a show that had the audience fully immersed in his tranquil song and melody. The moment Sexsmith walked on he had everybody attentively cherishing and truly listening to each acoustic note strung and every one of his softly spoken (but incredibly witty) words between tunes.

His first set was composed of newer tunes, namely from his 2020 “Hermitage” album that he never got to properly tour due to the Coronavirus pandemic and associated restrictions on live music. Sexsmith, after being locked down with the rest of the world, was thrilled to play for the Toronto audience once again. The mood at the Danforth on this Tuesday night brimmed with longing for live music anew.

The crowd particularly rejoiced in hearing Hard Bargain from his 2004 album “Retriever” before beginning the ensuing sorrowful tune, In a Flash. Sexsmith prefaced the song by explaining that he sang it for Jeff Buckley when he passed away in 1997. It later became a tribute to the brilliant Elliott Smith when he died in 2003- but on this Tuesday night at the Danforth, it was sung to memorialize Dallas Good from The Sadies who died this past February. It was completely heartbreaking but a moment I think everybody in the room was appreciative to have been a part of. It was quite a touching few minutes hearing a musician saying goodbye to another through song.

At this point, I knew that Sexsmith had complete control of the concert hall’s atmosphere and the audience was more than willing to let him do so having been captured by his warmth and honesty.

Sneak Out The Backdoor (Forever Endeavor, 2013) had the audience chuckling at the regrettably familiar anti-social sentiment of the tune and the following Secret Heart (Ron Sexsmith, 1993) had the crowd feeling reminiscent, leaning their heads on their partner’s shoulders, squeezing the hands of friends and gaily singing along.

Sexsmith demurely joked about his Einstein-ein hairdo brought on by age and commented on his impending 60th birthday adding that he “hates the ravages of time”. It became clear to me that time, especially as it goes by, is something that Sexsmith has a beautiful understanding and attraction to. His songs and friendly mid-set chats pay careful attention to the world going by and the impact of Sexsmith’s sonorous expression of such was really felt by the crowd. He posits that he feels everybody around him getting old while he’s staying the same age. This sentiment, I think, can be applied to describing the overall mood of the night… Time stopping.

As I sat listening to the music, the passing world outside of the walls of the Danforth didn’t matter. Time had frozen with these melodies and nothing else mattered. As I watched people’s feet hesitate to tap on the floor too loudly, afraid of making any distractive sounds, I felt that the sound of my camera shutter going off was almost too much.

The night ended with an encore featuring Glow in the Dark Stars (Hermitage, 2020) and Heavenly (Long Player Late Bloomer, 2011). These last couple of tunes sent us off with full hearts and a feeling that everything will be okay- and if it’s not okay, go to a Ron Sexsmith show and he’ll make you feel alright.

September 29, 2022 – Internationally acclaimed singer-songwriter Ron Sexsmith has returned to share “What I Had in Mind,” the first single from his forthcoming album The Vivian Line .   “What I Had In Mind,” boasts a trademark catchy Sexsmith melody and an upbeat feel boosted by female backing vocals and a positive tone to the lyrics: – “In the rear-view mirror, leaving all our tears behind, now that’s what I had in mind.”   The Vivian Line will be released on February 17 th , 2023 and is available for preorder and presave now.

The Vivian Line is the 17 th album entry in Ron Sexsmith’s compelling discography, one matched by very few contemporary singer-songwriters. His catalogue has earned him immense peer respect and a loyal international following, and this new release captures Ron at the top of his creative game.   The Vivian Line is named after a rural route near Ron’s house, and he views it as “representing a sort of portal between my old life in Toronto and my new life here.”

Almost entirely written during a short period of 2021 during COVID, The Vivian Line was recorded in Nashville with producer and multi-instrumentalist Brad Jones at Jones’ studio Alex The Great.   The result is a beautifully rich and evocative sounding album. The vast array of instrumentation plus female harmony and backing vocals are employed subtly and judiciously, and Sexsmith is at the top of his game with his vocal performance. The Vivian Line is guaranteed to delight the Sexsmith faithful out there and deserves to attract new fans to the fold.

Ron Sexsmith is one of Canada’s most accomplished singer-songwriters.  He has collaborated with the likes of Daniel Lanois, Mitchell Froom, Ane Brun, Tchad Blake, and Bob Rock.  His songwriting appears on albums from Rod Stewart, Michael Bublé, k.d. lang, Emmylou Harris and Feist.  His inimitable work has drawn praise from the likes of Paul McCartney, Elvis Costello and Chris Martin to name just a few.   He has been awarded 3 Juno Awards, having been nominated 15 times including eight nods for Songwriter of the Year.  For all the latest on Ron Sexsmith follow Ron on  Twitter ,  Facebook ,  YouTube , or his  website .

Beloved singer-songwriter Ron Sexsmith has released “When our love was new,” the third single from the highly-anticipated new album The Vivian Line, due February 17. To celebrate the album’s release Sexsmith has confirmed his first U.S. tour since 2015. The seventeen-date solo trek will kick off in Boston on February 15, 2023. See below for a complete list of tour dates. Throughout the run Sexsmith will sing songs from throughout his acclaimed career as well as new favorites from the forthcoming album.

The who, what, where, why and how of the album are best explained by Sexsmith himself: “The Vivian Line is a rural route right near where we live in Stratford (Ontario). Whenever we have to get out of the city we jump on The Vivian Line and it dumps us out onto the highway. I wondered about the name when we first moved there and thought it was intriguing… it sort of represents escaping from our old life in Toronto to this new phase we’re in. And it’s also like a portal to my old life when I have to get back there. I recorded it (The Vivian Line) with Brad Jones in Nashville. (Brad played bass on 3 of my earlier records “Other Songs”, “Whereabouts” and “Blue Boy”) and it’s a very lush sounding almost baroque pop record. (a distant cousin of “Whereabouts). The songs were mostly inspired by this stage in life that I find myself in and trying to figure it all out.”
