bigfoot 17.5 travel trailer reviews

Final Four Fiberglass Trailers: Bigfoot Trailer

What I thought would be two posts to share my thoughts about purchasing an RV has turned into five. So far. To recap: I started with the decision to go with a fiberglass trailer , then narrowed it down to five manufactures . Then in this three part series, I’ve shared my final four trailer choices starting with the Casita in part one and moving to the Oliver and the Escape in part two . Today is the third and final part with a review of the Bigfoot Trailer.

I remind readers the reason I wrote reviews of my final four is because I continue to struggle with which one is right for me. Any day I hope the decision will become obvious. But today it is not that day. I will be going to the Tampa RV Supershow in January and my greatest hope is once my research leaves the realm of the internet and steps into reality, things will be more clear.

However, there is an equally good chance it won’t help at all since three of my final four trailer choices are purchased directly from the manufacture. RV show vendors are primarily dealers and companies that sell items for the RV.

Today’s review is the sole final four trailer purchased from a dealer and not the manufacturer. Bigfoot RV is located in British Columbia, Canada. Yes, this manufacture is the second (of my final four) located in Canada.

Like the Oliver, the Bigfoot is on the higher end of the price range. And, like the Oliver, you get what you pay for.  Bigfoot has the insulation and thermal windows necessary to be a multi-season trailer. Multi-season is the word used on their website. I interpret it as three seasons, meaning you might be a little cold in the depths of a cold winter.

Many people know Bigfoot as a truck camper brand. The camper has two series and each series has several layouts. A truck camper was never among the options I considered. They also make the Bigfoot Travel Trailer 2500 series which comes in three lengths: 17.5 foot , 21 foot and 25 foot .

I focused in on the 21 foot model. Not too big and not too small. The Bigfoot 21 foot trailer with front bedroom  has a lot going for it. And, more than any of the other trailers on my final four list, it has the most items on my priority list. In fact, it has every priority item except that it isn’t purchased from the manufacturer. It’s the only one on the list with a dry bath. A dry bath means showering in an enclosed  dedicated shower space rather than showering in the entire bathroom. Showering in a wet bath gets the sink, toilet and all four walls of the bathroom wet. People don’t have very good things to say about wet baths.

With a dry bath, the conversion from a marine toilet to a composting one would be pretty easy. And its flat roof could easily accommodate solar panels. Both important aspects of the kind of RV living experience I want.

Inside view of the Bigfoot 21 foot trailer. I prefer the light colored cabinetry rather than the dark shown here.

Bigfoot’s  bed, not a dining area that converts to a bed, is another big plus. In other words, it comes with a real mattress not 4″ cushions that fit together to make up an uncomfortable “mattress.” An added bonus to this set up is that two sides are accessible which makes changing the sheets so much easier than on the dining room conversions where three sides butt up against the walls of the trailer.

The Bigfoot isn’t purchased from the manufacturer so the price isn’t a flat fee, making this one harder to price. The best estimate is to take 25% off the MSRV advertised by a dealer.  Particularly good negotiators might get up to 30% off. My calculation, once I add the necessary upgrades and add ons to meet my needs, the Bigfoot  cost is $45,000. This makes it less than the “Cadillac” choice of the Oliver but still double the cost of the Casita.

I mentioned Bigfoot before and heard from a man in Fairbanks, Alaska, who owns a Bigfoot truck camper. He has had it 10 years and loves it. That says a lot.

As a bit of a post script, the Bigfoot website shows a list of “factory outlets.” Anchorage, to my surprise, has one listed. Of course, I’d be a fool not to go for a look-see. I considered titling this post First RV Lot Visit a Bust. Does that give you an idea of how it went?

This Bigfoot RV lot (and “lot” is a VERY generous word) had one (that is not a typo) truck camper for sale. Yep, one single solitary very lonely little unit. The woman explained they were a “mom and pop” shop so couldn’t afford a large inventory. I did take the full tour of the truck camper. They also had insulation samples which I liked being able to see and found interesting. On the bright side, it made me even more excited for the RV show with 450 vendors, more than 1,400 RVs, all covering 26 acres.

Bigfoot Pros:

  • Dedicated bed
  • Insulation good to zero degrees

Bigfoot Cons:

  • Can’t customize at build since not purchased from the manufacturer

So there you are. The final four fiberglass trailers. During the RV show and the side trip to Tennessee for the factory tour at Oliver, I’ll post regular updates on social media. So exciting. Everyday, this journey to Supersize my LIFE becomes a little more real. Deciding on which trailer is right for me will be a big step in that journey.

Have you wondered how I will pull the trailer, whichever one I end up going with? In an upcoming post, I will share my thoughts. This one, I think I have figured out!

Have a happy and safe Thanksgiving holiday. Here’s to good food, good friends/family and to four days off work. I give thanks for the unique opportunity at the chance to live a dream. To Supersize my LIFE.

I still like the casita but the big foot makes more sense. You can’t beat the shower and the bed in the big foot. Is there storage under the mattress? Lots to think about. Happy Thanksgiving to you as well! Love, Marie XOX

GO BIG! or GO HOME! Oh, that will be your home (-:. Solstice and Kittie need sleeping space without questioning! And you don’t want to shower over the toilet, I don’t think. (-:

I agree with Missy!!! Think of what you do every day from waking to turning in for the night. Go through this mental checklist and how all those tasks etc. will be accomplished in that space. Just living day to day and how you will do this in a trailer with a dog and cat Sleeping is so important and if it’s not good night after night that changes one’s outlook on life as well as your health. this will be your home not just a weekend getaway!! Love you, Jen

We just bought a 2004 21 fb. Bigfoot. Trying to get the musty smell out but otherwise we love it.

' src=

Oh my gosh, a Bigfoot was my most serious second choice for a trailer. If we ever cross paths on the road, I’d love a tour! I bet once you get your own stuff in there, get some fresh air blowing through that smell will go away. I got my trailer brand new and it came kind of smelly too, it was the fiberglass. It took a couple weeks for it to go away. Congrats on the purchase and enjoy your travels.

Best Fiberglass Travel Trailers – Complete Round-up

Fiberglass travel trailers are a very popular type of camper that's kind of built its own little niche in the RV community.

They're cool, compact, and typically retro looking. They're easy to tow, and best of all are a sturdy base for anyone wanting to enjoy the great outdoors.

The best fiberglass travel trailers offer some luxuries, but as they're a small trailer, you do have to give up on many. But that shouldn't put you off because, they really are a fantastic and cheap alternative to other trailer types.

So, if you are thinking about investing in a fiberglass travel trailer, we have you covered. We've put a review together of what we think are some of the best models on the market.

We also take a closer look at the pros and cons of owning a fiberglass camper and do a compare and contrast against aluminum travel trailers.

We've also included an FAQ section just to cover any possible unanswered questions you may have. So, with that said, let's take a look at what makes fiberglass travel trailers so appealing.

fiberglass travel trailer

  • Lightweight yet strong built
  • Generator Ready (C/W Auto Transfer Switch)
  • Has high-density insulation with thermal pane windows
  • Features air conditioning (11,000 BTU) and exterior speakers
  • Dual propane tanks with an automatic switch over in storage compartment
  • Number of Floorplans: Eight (8 models)
  • Number of Slide-Outs: None
  • Length: 17'-5"
  • Width: 8'-0"
  • Weight: 3179 Lbs

The Bigfoot 2500 Series has eight models with varying degrees of exceptions, but all have been designed in a manner that gives its user experience second to none yet doesn’t require you to spend a fortune.

One particularly commendable thing is how this fiberglass travel trailer has an immense storage area, be it for your luggage, kitchen or bedroom cabinets, propane tanks storage, or the dinette area. There is attention to detail, and the manufacturer has tried to facilitate the customer using little details.

The bedroom has day and nightshades along with two windows and reading lights. There's ample tank storage for fresh, grey, and black water in the bathroom. And, the dinette has a large window and comfortable leg space along with outlets and USB ports so that you can work easily.

Another crucial feature is that despite having large windows, the trailer is quite soundproof and offers privacy too. All in all, this is a trailer in which the manufacturers have gone all out to ensure you do not regret purchasing this.

Truck Camper Dry and Wet Weights

Truck camper base dry weights have been provided by the manufacturers.  Be aware that (a) each manufacturer has different standards and options that are included or excluded from their base dry weights, and (b) very few truck campers leave the factory without additional options.   Make sure to add the weight of additional options for your truck and camper matching calculations.

The Truck Camper Magazine Buyers Guide uses a standardized equation to calculate truck camper wet weights. Starting with the manufacturer’s base dry weight, the equation adds the full fresh water weight, full hot water heater weight, full propane tank weight, battery weight, and 500 pounds for stuff.

2005 Bigfoot 3000-Series Review

RVGuide.com

Called the 3000-series, this product consists of three lengths (24’ to 30’) and six floorplan configurations, some with slideouts. The unit I tested was the 29G; the G stands for garage. This is a neat feature on this Class C. A built-in garage big enough to house a golf cart, a full size motorcycle, a pair of scooters or a bunch of bikes. For that matter you might load a hot air balloon in there – what you carry is up to you, but the ability to carry something large in the body of the motorhome also lets you haul a trailer.

2005 bigfoot 3000 series review

It comes with a standard Class II hitch receiver; but for those folks who loath towing the garage space may be just big enough to let you get away with never having to pull a trailer. Like I said it opens up a host of possibilities. This garage space has doors that open from either side of the body as well as a roof opening which is part of the pedestal bed setup inside. In addition to the garage there is a front pass-through storage space, and a few other nooks that can be filled. For a motorhome this size storage has been made a priority and it shows.

The Ford E450 which is the base vehicle for this motorhome offers a basic grey interior, but it does have a good center consol, cup holders, a storage bin and door pockets. The transmission is automatic of course and convenience items included in the package are power windows, brakes, steering and tilt wheel. There is also cruise control and an O/D lockout for hilly terrain. In this model the stock seats have been replaced with very nice Flexsteel ones, though with limited space the travel and reclining functions of these seats can not be fully utilized.

The V10 engine has more than enough power to carry this unit and the ride is helped with optional rear air bags (you can set them to a stiffness that accommodates whatever you have in the garage). The downside to this (and virtually all) Class C is the feeling that the unit is wallowing as you drive down the road. There is nothing dangerous in this, it is something though that you have to get used to – it’s simply a function of this type of construction. Otherwise the Bigfoot handled well, braked well and was comfortable to drive.

2005 bigfoot 3000 series review

You should try to remember to flip the overhead bunk open so as not to hit your head getting in and out of the seat. This overhead bunk is quite large and has just over 3’ of clearance, or enough for most folks to sit up comfortably. There are side-windows with screens and an overhead crank up vent. A material pull curtain can make this a private space and a storage space at the head of the bunk would store pillows and or a comforter neatly out of sight.

The dinette that you’ll use to climb into the bunk has a solid feel to it. It also has shoulder belts for travel and the twin bucket chairs across from it also have seatbelts. Though these chairs are bolted to the floor they do swivel and travel using switches in the arms. Between them is a small table that folds down and out of the way. The dinette seats have pullout drawers on each side, while underneath the cushions toward the back there is some storage, but it has to compete with electrical and heating ducts. I noted, with interest, that the framework and seat support of the dinette is steel.

For music there is an optional AM/FM/CD player in the dashboard which is tied into a four speaker house system (two forward, two in the bedroom). These speakers are built into the cabinets with material fronts, invisible.

I was looking for the electrical outlets and wondered why I saw none, till my son noticed that they are mounted on the underside of the cabinets, in the kitchen, over the dinette and the sink.

2005 bigfoot 3000 series review

The placement for the TV in the front of the unit is too small, as is the travel on the pullout stand. The door to this space was droopy and apart from having the cable, ANT and electrical outlets inside this box, I just don’t see wanting my TV in this location. The viewing height is wrong and so is the size.

My tester had an auxiliary heater fan that blew engine heat through two ducts into the body of the motorhome. This worked very well. The engine heater had no problem keeping the unit warm while driving. With this setup there is no need to have the furnace running while in transit or for that matter on short trips where you’re never parked that long. Double pane windows in aluminum frames hold the heat (and they didn’t fog)

Under the sink there is a terminus for waterlines, and electrical. It’s always interesting to see how manufacturers route these services. In this case water lines had square elbows, everything was tied together and down; neat and tidy. Only one problem, there are two cupboard doors here, and it’s obvious that the remaining space is meant to be used for storage; so my first thought was what happens when things start to fall or roll around down there? Without a physical barrier, sooner or later one of those waterlines could get poked and spring a leak. Of course this can be solved by storing loose items in a box under there. This space is under the L-shaped kitchen counter that looks to be very handy for this space. It offers a little more counter using a fold up extension and saves space with a built-in microwave over the stove which also has an exhaust hood. That stove also has an oven. To the left of the stove is a slide-out pantry, perfect to organize canned goods.

2005 bigfoot 3000 series review

The bathroom is set up so as to offer privacy for the occupants of the rear bedroom or the front of the vehicle. Each taking there turn. The rear bedroom has a solid sliding door that separates it from the bath or conversely by locking the toilet door open the front of the motorhome is sealed off. With this door locked open there is access to a built-in wardrobe and a large hall mirror. The shower with overhead skylight also has a ½ tub as its base. The stall is a one-piece format which is neat and tidy, but I noticed when I leaned against it that it requires more bracing on the wall side as it bowed out quite a bit. The toilet faces the sink and cupboard – that’s fine, but then someone got the bright idea to put the toilet paper roll holder inside that cupboard. Well, it would have been a bright idea if the door didn’t collide with your leg when seated.

Outside a clean white surface has applied decals as color and accents. Chrome rims, front and rear also look good as does the chrome (optional) ladder on the rear that leads to the rubber covered roof. The awning (optional) is recessed into the side of the unit – more manufacturers should do this. All the storage doors are lockable, move cleanly and have weather seals. As a unit with a very specific purpose I can see this Bigfoot having distinct advantages.
