How to Force Websites to Enable Dark Mode in Safari on iPhone in iOS 17

Itā€™s been a while since Apple introduced Dark Mode, however, there are still many apps that do not support dark themes yet. The same goes for a number of Safari websites like Wikipedia that are yet to implement it.

If you prefer to have the dark mode enabled while browsing the web at night, you would like to force websites to enable dark mode in Safari on your iPhone and iPad for a more convenient browsing experience.

Thankfully, there is a neat hack to get it done. And thatā€™s precisely what Iā€™m going to talk about in this short piece.

How Do You Activate the Dark Mode for Unsupported Safari Websites on iPhone?

Before moving ahead, letā€™s sort out the confusion about how this hack works! Now, you must be wondering how to turn on the dark mode for websites that do not support it. Well, there is no built-in feature to do so. Hence, we will use a third-party Safari extension to activate dark theme for unsupported Safari websites.

Donā€™t worry, the App Store has some really good extensions that are designed for this specific purpose. Having tried several extensions, I have found Nightfall up to the mark in most aspects. Even better, itā€™s also available for free.

That means you wonā€™t have to shell out any bucks to get the most out of this app. On top of all, Nightfall supports not only iPhone and iPad but also Mac.

Download Nightfall on Your iPhone and Enable It

  • To get going, download the Nightfall app on your device (direct link).
  • After you have installed the app, open the Settings app -> scroll down and choose Safari .
  • Under the General section, tap on Extensions .

Choose extension s

  • Find Nightfall and turn it on.

Activate Dark Mode for Unsupported Websites

Once you have successfully turned on the Nightfall on your device, you will need to activate it for the specific websites.

  • Launch Safari on your iPhone or iPad and then head over to the website where you wish to enable the dark mode.
  • Now, tap on the aA text button at the bottom of the screen -> select Nightfall .
  • Next, turn on the toggle for it and allow it to see and alter the webpage content and your browsing history.

Important note:

  • Itā€™s worth bearing in mind that Nightfall can read and alter sensitive information on web pages, including your browsing history, credit cards, phone numbers, and passwords.
  • Besides, it can also view the current tabā€™s webpage when you use the extension.
  • While this extension is reliable, we would recommend you not use it on sensitive web pages. Keep it specifically for certain websites like Wikipedia for reading or browsing the web.
  • Next up, customize Nightfall to your liking. For instance, you can choose to darken maps, dim images, adjust image brightness, invert PNG images, and even select a desired dark modes theme like dark gray, Molokai, and midnight.

Activate Dark Mode for all Safari websites on iPhone and iPad

In the end, make sure to hit Done at the top right to confirm the action.

Voila! The change will come into play with immediate effect and the dark mode will be implemented across the website.

  • You can enable dark mode for Safari on a Mac, iPhone, or iPad, which can help ease eye strain and extend your device's battery life.
  • Turn on dark mode for your Mac in System Preferences in the General section.
  • For an iPhone or iPad, enable dark mode in the Settings app by going to the Display & Brightness section.

In recent years, developers have been making it easier to enable dark mode for all your most common apps. That's good, because many people prefer dark mode because the palette is often easier on the eyes ā€” especially at night ā€” and it can even help extend your device's battery life by not illuminating the screen as brightly. Here's how you can turn on dark mode for the Safari browser on your Mac, iPhone, or iPad.

Safari automatically uses dark mode if you enable it in your Mac's System Preferences.

1. Click the Apple menu and then choose System Preferencesā€¦

2. Click General .

3. In the Appearance section, click Dark or Auto .

If you choose Dark , Safari and all other compatible apps will switch to a dark color palette right away and stay that way until you change this setting. Auto , on the other hand, sets the palette to dark at night and switches it to light during the day.

Just like on the Mac, Safari on your iOS device uses dark mode if you enable the feature in your iPhone or iPad's settings.

1. Start the Settings app.

2. Tap Display & Brightness .

3. In the Appearance section, tap Dark .

If you want Safari (and the rest of your device) to use dark mode automatically at night but switch to a light palette during the day, turn on Automatic by swiping the button to the right.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are the answers to more of your questions about Apple Dark Mode.

Can I use Dark Mode with Chrome on a Mac?

Yes, but unfortunately, it isn’t an option provided natively. This means you’ll need to use a Chrome browser extension like the ones we’ve mentioned above. If you follow the steps above to activate Dark Mode on your Mac, it will have no effect on third-party apps and browsers such as Firefox or Chrome.

Can I enable Dark Mode with Mozilla Firefox on my Mac?

Fortunately, yes! Firefox makes many things simpler than other web browsers, and Dark Mode is one of them. Enabling Dark Mode on Firefox is the same on a Mac or a PC. All you need to do is click on the three horizontal lines in the upper right-hand corner of the browser. Then, click ‘Add Ons.’ From here, you’ll see a Themes option on the left; click it, then click on one of the options in the list that gives you Dark Mode.

There are several different color variations, so choose one that you like. Now, the Firefox system will show in Dark Mode, but not all of your websites will, so you may need to enable Night Eye for Mozilla or another add-on.

Ease the Strain on Your Eyes

Reading texts all night long can cause migraines, sore eyes, and unpleasant muscle strain; switching to Dark Mode is a great option. Your eyes will be grateful, and you will be able to focus for longer periods. Who doesn’t want to increase productivity while keeping themselves healthy?

What to Know

  • Turning on dark mode in system preferences will enable the mode for compatible websites.
  • If a website has aĀ  Reader Ā button on the left side of the search field, click it to go dark.
  • Use a Safari extension to enable dark mode on all websites. We recommend Night Eye and Dark Reader

This article covers three options to enable and disable Safari's Dark Mode on your Mac: via system preferences, by using Safari Reader View and using a browser extension.

How to Turn on Safari's Dark Mode via MacOS

At night, black text on white backgrounds is particularly tough on your eyes. It's very simple to switch on Dark Mode for your Mac. It doesn't just turn on Dark Mode for Safari, it does so for all your apps but that's perfect for protecting your eyes late at night or in dim lighting conditions.

Dark Mode is only available in macOS Mojave or later.

Click the Apple icon on the top left of your screen.

Click System Preferences.

Click General .

Click Dark .

If you want the dark appearance to only appear at night, you can click Auto for it to automatically adjust as the day progresses.

All websites that have been designed to support Dark Mode will now show in a darker form than before.

How to Switch off Safari Dark Mode

Switched on Dark Mode and realized you don't like it? It's simple to switch it back off.

As above, click the Apple icon on the top left of your screen and then choose System Preferences > General .

Click Light .

MacOS and Safari will now return to the light background permanently until you choose to switch it over again.Ā

How to Use Safari Reader View to Turn on Dark Mode

Depending on the website you're viewing, the only thing that may go dark with MacOS's Dark Mode is the buttons and menus around the website. To ensure the site goes fully dark to protect your eyes, you need to use Safari's Reader View.

Safari Reader View only works on certain websites. Often, this is restricted to blog posts and other text-heavy websites. It's worth using when able to though.Ā

On the website you want to view, click the Reader button on the left side of the search field.

This only appears on websites that support Safari Reader View.

Click the letter button on the right side of the search field.

Click the black background to change the background color.Ā

You can also adjust font size and font choice here.

The background has now been changed to a dark one with white text.Ā

Click away from the article to revert back to the original look or press the Escape key on your keyboard.

How to Use a Dark Mode Extension in Safari

The above solutions work only on a limited number of websites. If you want to enable Dark Mode for every website, you need to use a Safari extension. Many of these cost money but they can be useful. We recommend using either Night Eye which is free but limited or paying a one-off fee for Dark Reader. The process is the same for both extensions.

Install either Night Eye or Dark Reade r from the Mac App Store .

Open Safari then click Safari > Preferences .

Click the Extensions tab.

Check the box next to your newly installed extension to enable Dark Mode.

Both of these extensions should convert the vast majority of websites to Dark Mode as and when you need it.

How to enable dark mode on your iphone and ipad.

Dark mode in iOS 13 and iPadOS 13 is almost here! It's a system wide feature that works with supported apps and websites. Here's how to enable it on your iPhone and iPad.

Quick Links

How to enable dark mode on iphone and ipad, add a dark mode toggle to the control center, set dark mode on a schedule, dark mode works with compatible apps and websites, alternative to dark mode: smart invert.

Dark mode is everywhere from Mac, Windows, Android , and now on the iPhone and iPad. iOS 13 and iPadOS 13 finally brings the much-coveted feature to Apple's devices. It looks great, and it automatically works with supported apps and websites.

When you enable dark mode, the entire UI on your iPhone or iPad flips. You now see a black background and white text. Apple has gone with a true black theme which means that the background at most places is pure black instead of a dark gray.

This looks great on iPhones with an OLED display (iPhone X, XS, XS Max, 11, and 11 Max) as the pixels just don't light up . To maintain readability, Apple has gone for a gray background for some background elements. We've talked about the intricacies of the dark mode interface in detail before.

So let's get to the nitty-gritty. To enable the dark mode on your iPhone or iPad, first, open the Control Center .

If you have an iPhone X-style device with a notch, swipe down from the top-right edge of the screen. The same goes for iPad users. If you're using an iPhone with a Home button, swipe up from the bottom of the screen to open Control Center.

Here, tap and hold on the "Brightness" slider.

Now, tap on the "Dark mode" button to turn it on. If you want to disable the feature, you can tap on the icon again.

Alternatively, you can turn dark mode on or off through the Settings menu. You can do this by going to Settings > Display and tap on "Dark."

If you're like me, you'll want a dedicated switch for dark mode. It's available as an additional toggle in Control Center.

To enable it, go to Settings > Control Center > Customize Controls.

From this screen, tap on the "+" button next "Dark mode."

This will enable the dedicated dark mode toggle at the end of the Control Center. Tap on the button to toggle dark mode on and off. There's no more need to go to the brightness menu!

Related: How iOS 13's Dark Mode Works on Your iPhone and iPad

You can also automate the dark mode feature by setting up a schedule. Open the "Settings" app and go to "Display and Brightness."

From the "Appearance" section, tap on the toggle next to "Automatic."

Then tap on the "Options" button to switch between the "Sunset to Sunrise" option and a "Custom Schedule" option.

If you choose the "Custom Schedule" option, you'll be able to specify the precise time dark mode should kick in.

Just like macOS Mojave , the dark mode on iPhone and iPad works with supported apps and websites.

Once an app updates for iOS 13 and supports this feature, it will automatically switch the app's theme to dark theme when you turn on the system dark mode from Control Center.

Here, for example, is the LookUp Dictionary app. In the left screenshot, the app is in the default light mode. And on the right, you can see what the app looks like in dark mode.

All I did between these two screenshots was to go to the Control Center and turn on dark mode. Once apps start supporting this feature, you won't need to find the dark mode feature in individual apps.

The same goes for Safari. If a website supports the dark mode feature in CSS, it will automatically switch between the light and the dark themes based on the system settings.

In the screenshot below, you can see the feature in action for the Twitter website in Safari.

Currently, there's no way to blacklist apps from this automatic theme switching feature.

But for websites, you can disable the feature altogether by going toĀ Settings > Safari > Advanced > Experimental Features and turning off the "Dark mode CSS support" option.

The automatic dark mode will only work for apps that support the feature in iOS 13, iPadOS 13, and above. What if you want to enable dark mode in an app that doesn't support it? Use the Smart invert feature as a workaround.

Smart invert is an accessibility feature that automatically inverts the UI colors without touching the images and other media. With this workaround, you can get a decent white-text-on-black-background interface.

To enable it, go to Settings > Accessibility > Display and Text Size and then toggle on "Smart Invert."

You can see the difference between a website in light mode and with Smart invert turned on in the screenshots below. Although most of the website inverts correctly, some areas---such as the menu bar in the below example---don't look like they should.

Granted, the Smart invert feature doesn't work for everything, but it's a good alternative. If a developer doesn't add dark mode to their app(s), this (somewhat) works.

The dark mode is one of the trending features that most of the users want. You can find the option on almost all major social platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and more. The feature can be found on popular OS like Windows 11, Windows 10, macOS Monterey, macOS Ventura, or earlier versions.

Force websites to comply with macOS Catalinaā€™s Safari Dark Mode

By Charlie Sorrel ā€¢ 11:00 am, November 13, 2019

Dark mode for safari

I stopped reading white text on a black background the moment I left school, and Iā€™ve never liked it since. Especially on a screen, where the black expanse becomes a dark mirror that reflects everything in its sight. But even I prefer Dark Mode late at night, when I want to read without disturbing other people.

The trouble is, many websites donā€™t support Dark Mode. Everything else in Safari is rendered in tasteful black, but the page itself is still rendered in glaring white. Happily, on the Mac at least, thereā€™s a way to fix it. Hereā€™s how to force any website to support Safari Dark Mode on Mac.

Safari Dark Mode on Mac.... So relaxing.

Dark Mode for Safari is an Apple-recommended Safari extension that forces Dark Mode on sites that donā€™t support it. Instead of pages flashing bright white when they load, they will open in restful white-on-black.

Just like Dark Mode on the rest of your Mac, the extensionā€™s operation can be scheduled. You can activate it manually, run it on a schedule of your choosing, or set it to activate whenever Mojave/Catalinaā€™s native Dark Mode is active .

How to use the Dark Mode for Safari extension

Enable extensions in Safariā€™s preferences.

Enabling the Dark Mode Safari extension couldnā€™t be easier. Just download the extension from the Mac App Store, and activate it in Safariā€™s Preferences . The preference page is found in Safari, under the Safari menu bar item. Open it, click on the Extensions tab, and click the check box for the Dark Mode extension.

The Dark Mode for Safari extension tames badly behaved websites.

You can choose between three dark themes ā€” Dark, Soft Dark and Mono ā€” and you also can whitelist sites so they are not automatically darkened.

Dark Mode for Safari, from developer Denk Alexandru, seems essential for anyone using Mojave or Catalinaā€™s Dark Mode. Nothing says ā€œhalf-assed implementationā€ like a bright webpage popping out of your tastefully dim desktop. Apple chose not to build this in, but you can add it for just $2.

Price: $1.99

How To : Safari Finally Has More Dark Mode Powers for Your iPhone

Safari Finally Has More Dark Mode Powers for Your iPhone

Not all websites are created equal, and that's why Safari doesn't apply Dark Mode to each webpage you visit during your iPhone's system-wide dark appearance. But in Safari's latest update , Apple gives its web browser more power to automatically apply Dark Mode to specific website content without having to use extensions like Noir .

While Safari's toolbars and unique UI elements conform to Dark Mode, Apple leaves it up to web designers to implement dark themes to match the system appearance on your device. Some web apps have implemented adaptable themes, but most webpages online will still blind you with bright light even when Safari's UI is darkened.

To help tackle the issue, Safari 16.4, which is available for iOS 16.4, iPadOS 16.4 , and macOS Big Sur and later, adds Dark Mode support for plain text documents, which are the brightest files on the web thanks to their simple white backgrounds and black text. When Dark Mode is enabled, .txt and other supported plain text files will switch to dark backgrounds and white text. This change also works in third-party iOS browsers like Chrome and Firefox.

  • Don't Miss: Always Use Dark Mode or Light Mode for Any App on Your iPhone

Safari Finally Has More Dark Mode Powers for Your iPhone

This is just a tiny piece of the puzzle to creating more dark-themed web content, but it's a much-welcomed one. Aside from .txt files, I've also been able to get some .1st, .dtd, .log, .nfo, .sgml, .srt, .tex, and .text files to switch to dark views, but I have not had the same success for .xml, .rtf, .html, and other file types yet.

If you don't want to install iOS 16.4 yet, you can use a Safari extension like Noir or Neo Noir to automatically switch most websites to a dark theme when your iPhone's system-wide Dark Mode is on.

How to enable dark mode on iPhone

Spare your eyes when you know how to enable dark mode on iPhone

The iPhone 14 Pro Max's always-on display with wallpaper disabled

It’s important to know how to enable dark mode on iPhone, as anyone who has ever checked their phone in the middle of the night will agree. Bright screens like the 2,000 nit display on the iPhone 14 Pro are great in a well-lit environment, but in the dark, they can be overwhelming to look at and cause eye strain.

To avoid this, you can turn down the brightness of course, but a white theme can still cause the screen to be too bright for comfort. That's why it's good to know how to enable dark mode on iPhone. This will turn your phone's theme to primarily dark, which further reduces the effects of bright, white and blue light, in turn making your phone more pleasant and comfortable to use in the dark.

Personally, as someone who seems to get headaches easily, knowing how to enable dark mode on iPhone is a must, especially if I'm going to be staring at a screen for long periods of time. Thankfully, enabling dark mode on iPhone is easy to do, and we'll talk you through it. What's more, as you'd expect from some of the best phones around, iPhones can even automatically switch between dark mode and light mode based on the time of day. We'll show you how to enable that too.

Without further ado, here’s how to enable dark mode on iPhone.

How to enable dark mode on iPhone

1. Open the settings app and then tap Display and Brightness .

  2. Tap the Dark check box underneath the Appearance section. To go back at a later point, you can simply tap the Light check box .

How to set dark mode automatically on iPhone

1. On the Display and Brightness menu, toggle the automatic slider to on (green) and then tap options .

2. The default automatic setting is for Sunset to Sunrise which will see your phone switch to dark mode as the day closes, and then to light mode as the day opens. To change this, tap Custom Schedule .

3. Tap the time boxes to select when you would like to have light and dark modes enabled.

And there you go not tricky at all, now you can use dark mode you won’t have to wear shades to use your phone. Some people prefer to use dark mode all of the time and that’s a perfectly valid choice, but of course it works best… in the dark.

What to Know About How Daylight Saving Time Works in March 2024

Clocks seen on the revitalized Holy Spirit Square in Krakow

L onger daysā€”kickstarted by an hour less of sleepā€”lie ahead for most of North America as the clocks ā€œspring forwardā€ this Sunday, March 10, marking the beginning of daylight saving time .

The practice has spurned plenty of debate over the years, as many feel it adds unnecessary disruption to our circadian rhythms. Most recently, the Sunshine Protection Act aimed to make daylight saving time permanent beginning in spring 2023, but was stalled in the House, despite unanimously passing through the Senate. And in the absence of nationwide movement, states are taking the matter into their own handsā€”at least 29 states considered legislation related to daylight saving time in 2023.

Hereā€™s what to know about the upcoming time change:

How does daylight saving time work?

In the spring, daylight savings begins, moving an hour of sunlight from the morning to the evenings, allowing people to take advantage of the natural light during the supposedly warmer months.

In the spring , clocks will move forward by an hour at 2 a.m. on the second Sunday in March, making it 3 a.m. and making the day an hour shorter.

In the fall, clocks jump back an hour at 2 a.m. on the first Sunday in November, making it 1 a.m and making the day an hour longer.

Who participates in daylight savings?

Roughly a third of the world participates in some form of clock changing, though the exact timeline varies by region.

Most U.S. states and Canada participate in daylight savings. The Uniform Time Act, passed in 1966, allowed states in the U.S. to choose whether they would participate in daylight savings. As a result, daylight saving time is not observed in Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and most of Arizona, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation .

What is the history of daylight savings time?

The U.S. has practiced many different versions of daylight savings over the years. The practice began in 1918, but was repealed and re-established several times over the decades. It finally stuck during World War I and World War II, when it was adopted as an energy saving tactic. The Uniform Time Act standardized the practice across most of the country.

How is the day determined?

In the United States, daylight savings lasts for eight monthsā€”starting on the second Sunday in March and ending on the first Sunday in November. These dates were established in 2005 by Congress.

This Mac app for Safari adds a dark mode to every website you visit

If you ever find the bright glare from your Mac’s screen a little too intense or headache-inducing, then today’s app is for you. Noir is a Mac app and Safari extension that adds a dark mode to every website you visit. And, because it works as a Safari extension, you don’t need to activate it when you load a new page.

Creating a dark mode for every single website you visit isn’t easy considering they all have different styles and are built on different platforms. But Noir is able to generate a custom dark style for every website you visit, which is based on the colors that are used on each page. Noir costs $3.99/£3.99 from the Mac App Store, but that’s not a subscription, buy it once and you have it forever.

How does Noir for Safari work?

The cool part about Noir is that you won’t even notice it’s performing its dark magic. It works incredibly fast and the end result is a dark mode that’s tailored for each website. You’ll find that contrast between the different shades is preserved and any highlights on the page still pop. However, there are built-in themes to choose from, as well as the ability to create your own, which means you can tailor your results to exactly how you want them.

Noir will automatically work with any site you visit when you’re using the Safari browser. And, by default, it’s linked up to your Mac’s Dark Mode settings, which means that sites will only go dark when you’ve programmed them to. You can also quickly change these settings to your liking, even customizing them per website. So if you only want to use Noir on certain websites, that’s completely possible. If you want to disable it on others, that’s easy too.

Switching on dark mode is perfect for night-time working and means you won’t be startled by a bright white screen. But even though the app is created for better browsing at night, I also sometimes prefer dark mode settings during the day, too. Especially if I’m working in a cafe with low light, or if I can feel a migraine brewing and need to do everything I can to reduce the glare of the screen before I can lock myself in a dark room.

Brave Browser Reports Spike in EU Installs After iOS 17.4 DMA Changes

Alternative browser company Brave has reported a sharp increase in iPhone installs since Apple made sweeping changes to iOS in order to comply with the Digital Markets Act in the European Union.

alternative browser list eu

Apple is not providing just the standard browsers that have been options on iOS in the past, but a list of the most downloaded browsers on iOS devices. Some of the options include Firefox, Opera, Chrome, Brave, and Microsoft Edge.

Brave shared an image on X (Twitter) of a line graph showing the number of Brave browser installations on iOS from mid-January to early March. Daily installs hovered around 7,500 to 10,000, before jumping to just over 11,000 following the release of iOS 17.4 on March 6.

"Monopoly defenders argue that the monopolies simply offer better products," wrote Brave in a subsequent post . "But as you can see, when consumers get a clear choice of iOS browsers, they're choosing alternatives to Safari."

"Maybe that's why Google still hasn't implemented a browser choice screen on Android," added the privacy-centric browser company.

Why did Apple and Google make it hard to switch default browsers for so many years? Because it's a powerful way to block competitors. Just look at what happened to Brave installs on iPhone in the EU when Apple rolled out a new default browser choice screen on March 6th: pic.twitter.com/Wefz4mCHGi — Brave Software (@brave) March 12, 2024

Apple selects up to 11 of these for the browser choice screen in addition to Safari, updating the list once per calendar year.Ā
