safari tree insecticide

Safari Insecticide, a super-systemic insecticide with quick uptake and knockdown, controls a broad spectrum of ferocious and invasive pests, including Q- and B-biotype whitefly, Hemlock woolly adelgid, emerald ash borer, mealybug, mountain pine beetle 2(ee), leafminer, fungus gnat, black vine weevil, glassy-winged sharpshooter, armored and soft scale and lacebug some of the most costly pests that affect high value greenhouse and nursery crops such as poinsettia and hibiscus, as well as trees, shrubs and herbaceous ornamentals in the lawn and landscape market. Safari is much more systemic than other neonicotinoids, which makes it especially effective when applied to the soil. Because of its high water solubility, Safari is more easily taken up by roots and more rapidly transported to leaves where insects such as whiteflies feed. When applied to the soil, Safari provides up to 90 days of control. As a foliar spray, Safari provides quick knockdown and excellent translaminar control of pests that feed on the underside of leaves. Rapid absorption by the foliage also makes Safari less likely to be removed by rainfall or irrigation. Recommended surfactant: Sunspot 90. If spraying for borers use Kinetic.

Dinotefuran and its degradate, MNG have the properties and characteristics associated with chemicals detected in ground water. The high water solubility of dinotefuran, and its degradate, MNG, coupled with its very high mobility, and resistance to biodegradation indicates that this compound has a strong potential to leach to the subsurface under certain conditions as a result of label use. Use of this chemical in areas where soils are permeable, particularly where the water table is shallow, may result in ground-water contamination. Periodic monitoring of shallow groundwater in the use area is recommended.

Let customers speak for us

Just received my order today and looking forward to using it soon and seeing how it works on my tree.

We had fire blight nearly destroy an apple tree. My research says streptomycin applied to the blossoms will stop it, however said antibiotic is only available one place. And 2 lbs is a 30 year supply for 2 trees and packaging cannot be re-sealed. If it saves our 2 trees it is worth it but how about smaller re-sealable packaging?

Products I ordered arrived well-packaged and on time. The health of my trees has visibly improved!

TIPCO has consistently provided trustworthy transactions, ensuring that the products I receive are genuine and effective. It's reassuring to have a reliable source for my PHC needs.

Purchased the ArborJet TREE-age G4 from TIPCO for the third time, and the quality and efficacy remained consistent. TIPCO's reliability have turned me into a loyal customer.

I like ordering from TIPCO because they are a reliable vendor. Unlike previous experiences with other suppliers involving back order issues and delayed deliveries, TIPCO consistently delivers on time. This reliability allows me to better plan my production schedule, ensuring that I always have the right products readily available.

Whatever it is, Reliant Fungicide works. Be patient, it takes some time to move into all parts of the plants. If I need to purchase this again in the future, I’ll be coming to TIPCO!

I am beyond thrilled with the results I've seen since using Tree Tech Snipper on my Sweet Gum trees. Dealing with those pesky gum balls every fall has been a constant headache, but Snipper has truly been a game-changer. Thanks, TIPCO!

TIPCO offers an impressive variety of tree injection products, and their commitment to quality assurance is evident in every purchase. I've tried different items, and each has consistently met or exceeded expectations. TIPCO is a reliable source for top-notch tree care solutions

TIPCO consistently delivers excellence. Whether it's the quality of the tree injection products or the reliability of their service, TIPCO has proven to be a trustworthy source. Thank you, TIPCO!

My order was fast and TIPCO’s prices are very reasonable! TIPCO is the place to go for all your tree injection needs and is the only store I’ll use for products like these!

I recently purchased Abasol from Mauget for my tree care routine from TIPCO, and I must say it's a game-changer. This unique product combines an insecticide and a fungicide into one, simplifying the application process while delivering exceptional results.

Got the Chemjet Injection Kit, and it has helped alot. My order arrived super fast thanks to the help of TIPCO!

Mauget's injection products speak for themselves. The visible improvement in my trees' health after using their products is remarkable.

  • Asked by Kevin 06/20/2014 Q What to use to rid scales on sago palms? Each time I cut back the leaves on my sego palm, the scales infest all the leaves and into the crown of the plant. Tried malathion, volck oil, systemic granuals, etc. but nothing seems to work. A We would recommend applying Safari for the treatment of scale. Please refer to the product label for mixing and application instructions.. Was this answer helpful to you?   Yes No 6 of 8 people found this answer helpful.

Yes, for a basal trunk spray, Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuran  can be used at a rate of 12 oz per gallon of water.

The 3-lb. jug of Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuran contains 48 ounces of product.

Yes  Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuran  can be used as a basal bark treatment for certain soft scale insects. According to page 13 of the product label :   12-24 oz per gallon Depending on bark type and thickness, one gallon of spray solution will typically cover 65-85” of cumulative trunk diameter (1.5-2.0 fl oz per inch of trunk diameter) when applied to trunk between soil surface and 4-5 feet above soil surface.

  • Asked by Gary from Green River, Wyoming 04/28/2013 Q I bought Safari 20SG to spray cotton wood tress for scales-directions confusing Can you provide clearer instructions on how much Safari 20SG spray power to mix in a gallon of water to control scales on my cotton wood and apspen trees. The directions with the spray were very confusing for a spray tank sprayer. My Order NO.11615820 Thanks A For a foliar spray you can use 1.0 tsp per gallon of water to cover 200 sq ft. Was this answer helpful to you?   Yes No 6 of 6 people found this answer helpful.
  • Asked by Lonnie from Fort Collins, Co 08/21/2013 Q Can Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuran be used to treat Euonymus scale? A Yes,  Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuran can be used to treat for Euonymus scale. Please follow the product label link for specific mixing and application instructions. Was this answer helpful to you?   Yes No 6 of 6 people found this answer helpful.

Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuran  will typically last between 6 months to 1 year. Please keep in mind that there are many variables that can influence how long a systemic is still active in the target plant such as soil condition, rainfall, and health of the plant.

  • Asked by Dinah from Texas 11/26/2013 Q How much do I need to treat a sago palm for cycade scale? What are the proportions to dilute Safari? How much Safari product do I need to treat the palm 5-6 times? Will Safari kill the existing scale (so that I don't have to cut off the infested leaves), or do I still need to cut all infested leaves (which is almost all the leaves) and only treat whatever will be left of the palm with Safari? A The dilution rate for a foliar spray would be 1.0 tsp per gallon of water to cover 200 sq ft. We recommend that you speak with the manufacturer of Safari so they can provide additional treatment options and times using their product. Valent Corp 800.682.5368 Was this answer helpful to you?   Yes No 5 of 8 people found this answer helpful.

When doing a soil drench with  Safari 20SG  or any other systemic insecticide, the exact amount of water is not as important as using the correct amount of product. Your water is a carrier for the active ingredient, so you just need to use a sufficient volume of water to mix and apply the insecticide. To treat shrubs, you would use 3 to 6 grams (1.25 - 2.5 level teaspoons) of Safari 20SG per foot of shrub height, using 1-4 pints of water per foot of shrub height or per inch of trunk diameter for trees.

  • Asked by Mark from Florida 05/25/2013 Q Treatment for Benjamin and Spiraling Whitefly Safari 20SG is labeled for whitefly. If it isn't too much trouble, I have 3 questions pertaining to this product as I have both Spiraling and Benjamin whitefly: 1) the spiraling whitefly is so much LARGER than other whitefly varieties, should the dosage be adjusted for a larger bodied insect? 2) looking at the label directions for trees/large hedges on their site (link below), soil drench instructions indicate by grams or ounces but do not indicate the amount of "finished solution" to be applied as they do for containers. Are the directions provided meant as grams/ounces per 100 gallons which would require a finished product equivalent like their potted plants or is this application rate per tree? 3) is it preferable to use trunk diameter or hedge height since hedges are merely shaped trees and could potentially have a larger trunk than would be supported by the height of the hedge? This information would be helpful in determining the amount I will need to purchase. LINK: http://www.valenttrainingmodules.com/safari/index.cfm?page=15 Many thanks in advance for your assistance with this! Please feel free to edit as necessary if you choose to place on the Q&A section of the Safari website. Mark A Safari is a fairly complicated product to use and we want to make sure you are getting the correct usage information so we are recommending that you contact Valent directly. You can reach Valent by calling 800-682-6368. Was this answer helpful to you?   Yes No 4 of 4 people found this answer helpful.
  • Asked by Edge from Central , Nj 05/08/2015 Q Can Safari 20SG be used to treat bronze birch borer in birch tees? I have a white birch with borer holes on the trunk and foliage thinning on the top 1/3 of the canopy. What is the best method to apply? How does the effectiveness compare to other systemic insecticides? A Safari 20SG   is not labeled to treat Bornze Birch Borer. Bronze Birch Borer can be difficult to treat. You can try Merit 75.You will dilute the 1.6 oz pack in at least 10 gallons of water and pour the dilution around the base of the tree. You will need to use 1.6 oz (1 packet) MERIT 75 WSP per 24 to 48 inches of trunk diameter. Was this answer helpful to you?   Yes No 4 of 4 people found this answer helpful.
  • Asked by Earl from / 08/25/2013 Q Will Safari 20SG be effective on infested trees with pine bark beetles or used for prevention only? A Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide is not specifically labeled for pine bark beetles. The biggest key with this insect is timing to ensure the infestation doesn't get out of hand. Once the tree is infested there isnt much you can do other than chop down the tree and burn it to try and prevent the current live ones from getting into any neighboring trees. Was this answer helpful to you?   Yes No 4 of 5 people found this answer helpful.

Per the product label, you can mix Safari 20SG with a surfactant, but it may not be very helpful for woolly adelgids for example since they are mostly controlled by ingesting the active ingredient rather than by contact: Tank mixing with a surfactant may improve control of pests such as whitefly, mealybug and scale. Confirm plant safety of tank mix in small area before using on a commercial scale.

Safari 20 SG Insecticide is a systemic product and will be taken up by the root system and translocated upward throughout the plant. When applied as a foliar spray, the product offers translaminar and locally systemic control of foliar pests.

For Armored and Soft Scale and treatment of small areas: Mix 1/2 - 1.0 tsp per gallon. You will want to apply this product when wind drifts are minimal.

Make first application just before pest populations reach an economic threshold. If necessary, make a second application after 14 - 21 days. Tank mixing with a surfactant may improve control of pests such as whitefly, mealybug and scale. Confirm plant safety of tank mix in small area before using on a commercial scale.

You will need 1 tsp. of Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticde with Dinotefuran per gallon of water to treat for aphids and whitefiles.  However, this product is not labeled for use on residential house plants.  If you have residential outdoor house plants, you would can use a product like Dominion 2L . You would use 0.45 mL per gallon of water for a foliar spray. You can also use Bonide Systemic Granules Insect Control , which is labeled for all houseplants, both indoors and outdoors. You will need to use 2.5 tbsp. per gallon of water.

You would use 12 - 24 oz of Safari 20SG Systemic Insecticide with Dinotefuran   per gallon depending on bark type and thickness, one gallon of spray solution will typically cover 65 - 85” of cumulative trunk diameter (1.5 - 2.0 fl oz per inch of trunk diameter) when applied to trunk between soil surface and 4.5 feet above soil surface. Spray bark on root flare (buttress roots) and on trunk between soil surface and 4-5 feet above the soil surface. Adjust nozzle to uniformly distribute spray over the entire circumference of the tree trunk and buttress roots. Wet bark just to the point of saturation and run off onto soil. Apply ONLY with a low volume sprayer operated at less than 20 PSI to prevent tree damage, bounce back and drift of spray droplets. Time applications to coincide with when most vulnerable pest life stage is present on plants. Do not apply to wet bark, during rainfall or if rain is expected within 12 hours. Control may be less effective in trees with thick bark, and at times when trees are not actively growing or transpiring.

"Cicada-geddon" insect invasion will be biggest bug emergence in centuries

April 2, 2024 / 6:29 PM EDT / CBS/AP

Trillions of evolution's bizarro wonders, red-eyed periodical cicadas that have pumps in their heads and jet-like muscles in their rears, are about to emerge in numbers not seen in decades and possibly centuries.

Crawling out from underground every 13 or 17 years, with a collective song as loud as jet engines, the periodical cicadas are nature's kings of the calendar.

These black bugs with bulging eyes differ from their greener-tinged cousins that come out annually. They stay buried year after year, until they surface and take over a landscape, covering houses with shed exoskeletons and making the ground crunchy.

This spring, an unusual cicada double dose is about to invade a couple parts of the United States in what University of Connecticut cicada expert John Cooley called "cicada-geddon." The last time these two broods came out together in 1803 Thomas Jefferson, who wrote about cicadas in his Garden Book but mistakenly called them locusts, was president.

"Periodic cicadas don't do subtle," Cooley said.

Cicada

If you're fascinated by the upcoming solar eclipse , the cicadas are weirder and bigger, said Georgia Tech biophysicist Saad Bhamla.

"We've got trillions of these amazing living organisms come out of the Earth, climb up on trees and it's just a unique experience, a sight to behold," Bhamla said. "It's like an entire alien species living underneath our feet and then some prime number years they come out to say hello."

At times mistaken for voracious and unrelated locusts, periodical cicadas are more annoying rather than causing biblical economic damage. They can hurt young trees and some fruit crops, but it's not widespread and can be prevented.

Two broods add up to a "mass invasion": 1 million per acre

The largest geographic brood in the nation —  called Brood XIX and coming out every 13 years — is about to march through the Southeast, having already created countless boreholes in the red Georgia clay. It's a sure sign of the coming cicada occupation. They emerge when the ground warms to 64 degrees (17.8 degrees Celsius), which is happening earlier than it used to because of climate change, entomologists said. The bugs are brown at first but darken as they mature.

Soon after the insects appear in large numbers in Georgia and the rest of the Southeast, cicada cousins that come out every 17 years will inundate Illinois . They are Brood XIII.

"You've got one very widely distributed brood in Brood XIX, but you have a very dense historically abundant brood in the Midwest, your Brood XIII," said University of Maryland entomologist Mike Raupp.

"And when you put those two together… you would have more than anywhere else any other time," University of Maryland entomologist Paula Shrewsbury said.

These hideaway cicadas are found only in the eastern United States and a few tiny other places. There are 15 different broods that come out every few years, on 17- and 13-year cycles. These two broods may actually overlap — but probably not interbreed — in a small area near central Illinois, entomologists said.

Experts told CBS Chicago there will be no avoiding the insects in Illinois when they emerge there, likely in mid-May.

"It's going to be this mass invasion, but a peaceful one," said Allen Lawrence, associate curator of entomology at the  Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum.

The numbers that will come out this year — averaging around 1 million per acre over hundreds of millions of acres across 16 states — are mind-boggling. Easily hundreds of trillions, maybe quadrillions, Cooley said.

An even bigger adjacent joint emergence will be when the two largest broods, XIX and XIV, come out together in 2076, Cooley said: "That is the cicada-palooza."

The origin of some of the astronomical cicada numbers can likely be traced to evolution, Cooley and several other entomologists said. Fat, slow and tasty, periodical cicadas make ideal meals for birds, said Raupp, who eats them himself. (His school put out a cicada cookbook called "Cicada-Licious." ) But there are too many for them to be eaten to extinction, he said.

"Birds everywhere will feast. Their bellies will be full and once again the cicadas will emerge triumphant," Raupp said.

Pets may also try to make a snack of cicadas. Veterinarians told CBS Chicago it's generally not a health hazard.

"They are not toxic to pets. They won't sting or bite your pet," said Dr. Cynthia Gonzalez of Family Pet Animal Hospital in Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood. "The only issue that would present for your pet is if they were to ingest a large amount of them, or if they're a smaller dog if they ate a small piece of the exoskeleton — sometimes that can really irritate their GI tract."

"Sometimes, in rare instances, an animal may have an allergic reaction to some of the components in that exoskeleton if that pet is also allergic to shellfish," said Dr. Kelly Cairns DVM, MS, DACVIM — a board-certified small animal internal medicine specialist, vice president of medical excellence and education for Thrive Pet Healthcare, and secretary of the board of directors of the Chicago Veterinary Medical Association.

Prime numbers and an evolutionary trick

The other way cicadas use numbers, or math, is in their cycles. They stay underground either 13 or 17 years, both prime numbers. Those big and odd numbers are likely an evolutionary trick to keep predators from relying on a predictable emergence.

The cicadas can cause problems for young trees and nurseries when their mating and nesting weighs down and breaks branches, Shrewsbury said.

Periodical cicadas look for vegetation surrounding mature trees, where they can mate and lay eggs and then go underground to feast on the roots, said Mount St. Joseph University biologist Gene Kritsky, a cicada expert who wrote a book on this year's dual emergence . That makes American suburbia "periodical cicada heaven," he said.

It can be hard on the eardrums when all those cicadas get together in those trees and start chorusing. It's like a singles bar with the males singing to attract mates, with each species having its own mating call.

"The whole tree is screaming," said Kritsky, who created a Cicada Safari app to track where the cicadas are.

Cooley takes hearing protection because it can get so intense.

"It's up in the 110 decibel range," Cooley said. "It'd be like putting your head next to a jet. It is painful."

The courtship is something to watch, Kritsky imitated the male singing "ffaairro (his pitch rising), ffaairro."

"She flicks her wings," Kritsky narrated in a play-by-play. "He moves closer. He sings. She flicks her wings. When he gets really close, he doesn't have a gap, he'll go ffaairro, ffaairro, ffaairro, fffaairo."

Then the mating is consummated, with the female laying eggs in a groove in a tree branch. The cicada nymph will fall to the ground , then dig underground to get to the roots of a tree.

Cicadas are strange in that they feed on the tree's xylem, which carry water and some nutrients. The pressure inside the xylem is lower than outside, but a pump in the cicada's head allows the bug to get fluid that it otherwise wouldn't be able to get out of the tree, said Carrie Deans, a University of Alabama Huntsville entomologist.

The cicada gets so much fluid that it has a lot of liquid waste to get rid of. It does so thanks to a special muscle that creates a jet of urine that flows faster than in most any other animal, said Georgia Tech's Bhamla.

In Macon, Georgia, T.J. Rauls was planting roses and holly this week when he came across a cicada while digging. A neighbor had already posted an image of an early-emerging critter.

Rauls named his own bug "Bobby" and said he's looking forward to more to come.

"I think it will be an exciting thing," Rauls said. "It will be bewildering with all their noises."
