Is there nightlife in Baler? Nightlife in Baler is not really inviting. There are only limited bars around the area.

How much is the tour package?   The tour rate will depend on the destinations that you want to visit. It will also depend if you will do a day tour or will stay there overnight or for a couple of days. There are also DIY groups that offer package tours for joiners and solo travelers.

Baler Travel Guide: Itinerary and Expenses Summary for 2D1N

September 3, 2016

baler day tour package

Day before the trip, I was starting to think that it wouldn’t push through because of the terrible Manila weather. We had a hard time finding a taxi that we thought we wouldn’t make it to our meetup time in Quezon City. Alas, our Baler roadtrip commenced, and it was a pretty exciting weekend.

You can skip to the end of this post and see my Baler travel guide, complete with itinerary and summary of expenses. But you can also read on to know more about our high jinks in detail.

To make things easier for us, we joined a tour organized by Dreams and Destinations Travel . There were four other people in the tour, and I kind of felt sorry for them because there were nine of us. (Thankfully, soon they were laughing at our jokes, too!)

We left stormy Manila at exactly 1:00 AM on a Saturday. Ideally, we should have slept all the way through, but it was a bumpy ride. It was really zigzag roads that kept us awake. Okay, his driving skills, too. Our driver was probably an Formula 1 racer in his previous life or something.

Balete Tree

We arrived at our first stop a few minutes before 6:00 AM–the great Balete Tree ! The Millennium Tree was more breathtaking in real life. I knew it would gigantic, but I didn’t know that it was so big that people can go inside the tree.

Even though it was extremely early in the morning, there are quite a handful of tourists already there.

balete tree in baler, aurora

What got me really excited to see this natural wonder is the fact that it’s the inspiration for the great  balete  tree in the Trese komiks . If you haven’t read that wonderful graphic novel, I’m not gonna spoil you, but you should definitely read it. It was pretty cool to see the tree in real life.

Ermita Hill

According to legends, there was a tsunami that engulfed the whole of Baler eons ago. Only one family survived the disaster, and only because they climbed atop Ermita Hill to not be devoured by the giant waves. The place was named after them, and there were even statues that depict their uphill journey.

baler day tour package

We stayed for less than thirty minutes and proceeded to have breakfast near the Museo de Baler. There’s a row of carinderia open in the early morning and we just randomly choose one to have breakfast.

Diguisit Falls

Immediately after, we proceeded to Diguisit Falls. I was surprised to see that it was right next to the street. Well, we needed to do a little trekking, but it’s still pretty close by. You can even see it while you’re sitting comfortably on the backseat of your car.

baler day tour package

It’s just a small stop, but still, try not to miss it when you visit Baler.

Lukso-Lukso Islets

Just a few minutes away from Diguisit Falls was the Lukso-Lukso Islets. We had quite an ample time to explore the place, but we only stayed for like 15 minutes.

Lukso-Lukso Islets are three little islands found at the southernmost point of the province and just a few minutes away from the town proper of Baler. The place was huge, and it’s just next to the road, too. We even saw it from atop Ermita Hill!

baler day tour package

Museo de Baler

We went back to town for Museo de Baler. Some people on our trip opted out on this one even though it’s already included in the tour package. They either stayed at the van or roamed around the plaza and ate dirty ice cream.

But I’m all about museums and maximizing everything I paid for, y’know?

baler day tour package

Aurora Masion

Our next stop was the Aurora Masion, which was a couple of streets away from Museo de Baler. When our tour guide said Aurora Mansion, I was inspecting something like Malacanang of the North. I was surprised when he lead us to a bahay kubo -like house.

It was the house of Manuel L. Quezon’s wife, Aurora. Of course, it has already underwent numerous renovations, but it hasn’t lost its charm.

There were paintings displayed inside, but it still looks like a normal house.

baler day tour package

Yollie’s Restaurant

At around 10:00 AM, we were done with more than half of our itinerary. Our driver suggested that we had an early lunch instead of going to the Mother Falls on an empty stomach. We weren’t that hungry yet, but we didn’t really have a choice. Bringing food to the falls didn’t seem like a good idea.

Originally we wanted to have lunch at Gerry Shan’s but their buffet dining starts at 11:00 AM. We didn’t have to wait so we opted for Yollie’s Seafood Restaurant, which was just next door. Our second choice deserves some praise though, because we had an extremely filling and delicious lunch for cheap.

baler day tour package

I highly recommend their laing , kaldereta , tuna belly, grilled pusit , and paco salad! Oh, and lots of rice, too.

I’m just happy that my friends were kind enough to let me try their orders, too. That’s basically my definition of #SquadGoals. Hehe.

Ditumabo Falls (Mother Falls)

After eating like queens and kings, we headed next to Ditumabo Falls, or commonly called Mother Falls. I heard it’s where Apocalypse Now  was shot, but I haven’t even seen Apocalypse Now  so let’s not dwell on that.

We had to ride a tricycle then trek for about 20 minutes before we could reach the falls, but all the trekking was worth it! (By the way, if your tour operator tells you that only tricycles can enter the jump-off and vans cannot, don’t believe them. We had to ride a tricycle but when we reached the parking lot it was full of parked vans.)

I was extremely unprepared for the walking. It was that time of the month for me, and trekking while its drizzling wasn’t my idea of a perfect day. But the views were amazing and I had amazing company. I couldn’t let the day go to waste.

baler day tour package

I didn’t get to swim that day so I made a vow to return and feel the icy cold water on my skin. My friends seemed to have a great time swimming, and I was sitting on one off the giant rocks, sulking. I’m coming back, I swear.

I think we spent more time trekking back and forth than actually staying at the falls. But there’s nothing else to do but swim. Unfortunately, the weather was getting worse, with the rain not abating. So the icy cold water plus the chilly weather didn’t allow us to stay too long. I guess I need to come back on a sunny day.

Check-in at S.M.A.R.T. Beach House

After a long day of jumping from one tourist spot to the next, it was finally time to go our hotel. We had no sleep and extremely tired, so we pretty much slept all the way from Ditumabo Falls to our hotel. Or maybe it was just me. I slept like a log.

S.M.A.R.T. Beach House is a beachside hotel at Sabang Beach. It has a pretty convenient location, and we only needed to walk a little to reach restaurants and surf shops.

baler day tour package

Dinner at Baler Surfer Grill

Only five of us had the energy to go to dinner that night. We walked leisurely with no place in mind. We were hungry and we ended up eating at the first place that caught our attention, which was this yellow Volkswagen turned into a grill:

baler day tour package

(Read my full review: Where to Eat i Baler, Aurora: Baler Surfer Grill )

Sunrise at Sabang Beach

Surprise, surprise! There was no sun. Because of the weather, the clouds were obscuring the sun and we didn’t get a proper sunrise.

We woke up at around 5:00 AM, and Stan and Pao had already toured around Baler. There weren’t a lot of people at the beach, and it absolutely looked perfect. Despite not really seeing the sun rise, the view still looked pretty amazing, right?

baler day tour package

We had an early start, which was what we preferred for the long day ahead of us.

Surfing at Sabang Beach

Right after breakfast, we went back to our rooms to be ready for the main reason we went to Baler–surfing! Up until that point, I still wasn’t decided to surf, but it seemed like a pity if I wouldn’t even give it a try.

I think Stan and Elzer were all chummy with the hotel staff that we got a discount for the surfing lesson. I blogged all about our surfing experience on my previous post. Katie was the only one who didn’t surf, but she was there in the water with us, cheering us on as we fall from our surfboards.

baler day tour package

There were supposed to be no waves in August, but because of the tropical storm, we were lucky enough to have an amazing day for surfing. I think it was good that we went there during off-season, because the waves during surfing season would probably devour me.

The view was fantastic that day and made for some really good photos. But of course, I prefer posting the weird ones.

Buffet Lunch at Gerry Shan’s Place

Our van picked us up from the hotel quite early. Since we washed and packed up right after surfing, we were ready to go even before 11:00 AM. We didn’t mind the early check-out, though, since we were eager to arrive in Manila as early as possible.

After picking us up from S.M.A.R.T. Beach House, we asked our driver to drive us to Gerry Shan’s Place . We were free to choose wherever we’d eat our lunch. This time we were just on time to be one of the first customers that day. Buffet was 200 per person, which was quite cheap considering the quality and taste of the food they serve. And believe, we loved everything .

baler day tour package

I highly recommend the sisig, papaitan, kare-kare, and crispy shrimp. They serve unlimited iced tea, too.

Baler Travel Guide

Two-day itinerary.

Here’s our weekend itinerary in Baler. On our next visit, we plan to do more surfing than exploring. Yep, we enjoyed it so much that we plan to go back and surf some more.

Baler Expenses Summary

Being an awful budget planner, I challenged myself not to spend more than 4,000, and I did it! It was really the food allowance that cost us the most.

Baler Travel Guide 2023: Things to Do, Where to Stay, Insider Tips & More!

A road trip away from Metro Manila, Baler has become a popular choice for many Pinoys looking for a break from city life. If you’re planning to travel to Baler, you’ve come to the right place. Writing from the perspective of a frequent Baler goer and of a Baler local , we’ve made sure to include in this Baler travel guide everything a traveller must know about the place.

T his article is a comprehensive Baler travel guide updated in 2022. We plan to take you through every Baler tourist spot — from must-visit sites to nearby town side trips, as well as every detail you’ll need in between.

Basic facts

  • Baler is the capital and the oldest municipality of the province of Aurora .
  • As Baler has grown into a tourist spot, the town has attracted several resorts and establishments to cater to its visitors.
  • While businesses have been growing in the municipality, Baler is still a rural area. As of 2022, Baler has no cinemas and only one small shopping mall. Many establishments close early at night, too. So, it’s not really a place for nightlife.
  • Baler is mostly known as the birthplace of former Philippine president Manuel Luis Quezon, and a few historical sites stand at the heart of the town in remembrance of him.
  • Baler is also known for surfing, so the best time to visit would be from October to March . Aside from having fewer typhoons, these months guarantee waves suitable for surfing.
  • The majority of the locals in Aurora speak Tagalog, while a few speak Ilocano. Residents of Baler are generally welcoming and helpful towards tourists.

Getting there

Manila to baler by car.

If you’re driving from Manila to Baler, expect five to six hours of driving. You’ll be going through the long and winding roads of the Sierra Madre mountain range. So, it would be safest to put the most experienced driver behind the wheel.

On your way to Baler, you have two major route options: the SCTEX–CLLEX-bound route and the Bulacan-bound route.

If you’d like to take the common route taken by travellers and most commercial buses, use the Subic–Clark–Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX) . This is usually the fastest route to Baler since you’ll be driving at around 100km per hour on the north’s major highway.

With the recent addition of the Central Luzon Link Expressway ( CLLEX) , trips to Baler are now faster than ever! Just prepare for a hefty toll fee of about ₱460, depending on your entry point. Check the updated toll fees here .

To lessen the travel distance by about 40km, take the national highway through some towns in Bulacan and Nueva Ecija . Be warned, however, that you’ll also have to navigate through some traffic in the area (usually in the morning and afternoon), or overtake a lot of 16-wheeler delivery trucks at night until dawn.

Manila to Baler by bus

At the moment, only Genesis Transport Service Inc. operates a point-to-point bus from Manila to Baler. The company runs two bus lines: the regular Genesis bus and their executive coach JoyBus . The buses take the same route, but the latter offers faster travel time with no stopover (snacks and water are provided, and there’s a lavatory inside).  They only update their JoyBus schedules which you can find here .

Genesis terminal address : 704 EDSA corner New York Street, Cubao, Quezon City, Metro Manila

In case you miss your schedule and don’t want to wait for another day, you can take buses en route to Cabanatuan City . Disembark at Cabanatuan City Central Transport Terminal . There, you can find vans and buses going to Aurora Province. Take note that not all buses and vans at that terminal are going to reach Baler. Some stop at Maria Aurora , the town right before Baler. If Maria Aurora-bounds buses are the soonest available ones during your trip, don’t worry! You can still drop off at that town and take a tricycle to Baler.

Getting around

Imagine strolling along with a coastal town with little to no cars on the road — basically, this is what getting around Baler is like. While most of the municipality is accessible by foot, tricycles are also readily available around the area. Tricycle rides start at ₱14 per person, depending on the distance travelled.

However, some far-flung tourist spots aren’t ideal to travel to via tricycle as they may cost a little too much and you’ll have a hard time hailing a ride back to the town centre. Fortunately, bike and motorcycle rentals are available around Baler.

bike rental baler travel guide 2022

Hop On Bike Rentals rents out Japanese bikes and beach cruisers. Bike rentals cost ₱ 150 for three hours, ₱ 400 for one day, and ₱ 800 for three days.

For groups travelling to Baler, van and tricycle rentals are also available. Tour guides come with an additional fee, but their services are highly recommendable for travellers keen on learning about the history and culture of Baler.

Where to stay in Baler

baler day tour package

If you ask the locals what Baler looked like a decade ago, most will probably answer that it was a lot different than how it is today. With many Baler tourist spots booming in the past years, many transient houses and hotels sprouted out of necessity. There’s a lot to choose from, but we can help you pick from some of the best Baler Aurora hotels!

Since Baler is a popular destination among weekend warriors, hostels and inns are scattered across the area. Some places of accommodation even provide hammock rooms — a perfect option for budget travellers and backpackers. Our tip? Browse through Airbnb for affordable homestay options.

costa pacifica baler travel guide 2022

Luxury hotels are also available for travellers seeking comfort and privacy. Many of these are suitable for families or leisure trips. Most resorts, like the popular Costa Pacifica and Playa Azul , sit right by the Sabang beach. These places are ideal if you’re planning to explore Baler on foot.

Costa Pacifica is your best choice if you’re looking for a place to stay where you can be near the town proper and have quick access to Sabang Beach in Baler. It’s one of the largest hotels in the province, and it offers complete amenities of two swimming pools by the beach, a buffet restaurant, and even van transfers from and to Dicasalarin Cove .

Another premier hotel in Baler, Nalu Surf Camp offers beachfront private villas. They also have in-house surfing instructors that can help you learn the basics of surfing, right in front of the hotel!

Other notable Baler hotels include Oceana Lodge (best for group travellers), Hotel Rupert A Baler (a budget-friendly option for tourists), Backdoor Villa (suitable for remote workers), and Casa Herminia (great for families).

If you’re looking for a more serene stay away from crowds, book a hotel away from the town centre. You can find some resorts in the quiet corners of Baler, specifically tucked in Reserva or Zabali . Take note that you might find a more difficult time accessing the public market or most restaurants if you book a place away from Barangay Sabang. Still, you can easily walk to less crowded parts of the beach practically anywhere you stay.

L'Sirene Boutique Resort

If you want to steer clear of the crowd, L’Sirene Boutique Resort (owned by actress Sam Pinto) is your best bet. Located in the coastal area of Brgy. Reserva, this hotel will surely give you one of the most tranquil weekend getaways of your life. You’d also basically have your own private beach in front since there are no nearby hotels on the side.

Where to eat in Baler

gagays baler travel guide 2022

There are so many things to do in Baler that you’ll surely empty your stomach at some point. Two things you must learn when going to Baler: where to go, and where to eat. Fortunately, this surf town is crawling with food hubs and local restaurants worthy of a gastronomic adventure.

As Baler has become a famous tourist destination, more and more restaurants have been sprouting in the municipality. From air-conditioned bistros to laidback food parks, Baler doesn’t sell short in offering a diverse food selection. But of course, the local pako (fern) salad still remains the ultimate crowd-favourite. In fact, it’s made its way into different recipes. Around various restaurants in Baler, you’ll find ginataang pako, ensaladang pako, and even pako pizza on the menu!

baler food

Kusina Luntian usually tops the list of every food lineup in Baler. They offer delectable grilled food served on Banana leaves. You won’t need spoons and forks here as you’ll eat with your bare hands, like a true Filipino! If you get here, consider ordering their famous pako (fiddlehead fern) salad.

Baler Tourist Spot Kingfisher

In case you fancy some steak, consider dining at The Secret Spot . There, you’ll find the Kingfisher and their roast beef and tomahawk steak. The Secret Spot is a food compound that also houses other restaurants such as Happy Huts Pizza , Mithi The Sundry & Atelier , and Yo Mama! Baler .

Dogtown Collective is another spot to try when you’re at Baler. This quaint food park is home to several hippie stalls such as Halle’s Kitchen , Gagay’s , and Kai Smoothies . It’s the go-to place for people who aren’t sure what they want to eat — yet!

Baler is a coastal town, so fresh seafood is naturally abundant in the area. While it’s inevitable that most restaurants, or even carinderias , offer seafood options at a higher (tourist) rate, the market sells several varieties of fish at a relatively low price. If your accommodation has a kitchen you can use, you may try cooking your own meals instead. You’re free to head out for a picnic by the beach, just as long as you clean up after yourself!

baler day tour package

As grilled food magically tastes a lot better when eaten by the beach, expect to find a cornucopia of grilled meat and veggies along the municipality. Make sure to buy some classic island drinks to pair them with, too. Most resorts along Sabang beach offer refreshing fruit shakes and buko juice.

Top things to do in Baler

Every Baler tourist spot you have to check out, especially if it’s your first time!

1. Surf the waves at Sabang Beach

Top 10 things to do in Baler

Of course, the highlight of this surf town is its waters. Being the birthplace of Philippine surfing, Baler has attracted both foreign and local surfers of all levels because of its world-class waves. Surfers flock Baler just to feel the wind above their boards as they rock the waves’ ebb and flow. To find the most popular Baler Aurora beach, head over to the neighbourhood of Sabang .

The soft, polvoron -like sands of  Sabang Beach make it an ideal and safe Baler surfing spot. If you’d like to learn how to surf, there are many instructors waiting by the bay. These are honest, trustworthy locals who won’t fraudulently ask you for too much. Surf lessons cost only ₱350 per hour, while surfboard rentals cost ₱200 per hour.

Unlike other surf spots, almost the whole stretch of Baler’s coastline is suitable for surfing. That said, there are also areas along the two-kilometre shoreline with calmer waves perfect for dipping in more tranquil waters. If you ever find yourself hungry for some chow, there are also lots of restaurants along the beach area.

2. Climb up Ermita Hill

Ermita Hill

Back in 1735, a terrible tidal wave named Tromba Marina came to Baler and wiped out the whole town. Only a few families survived the storm as they rushed towards Ermita Hill , which is now known as the highest point in the municipality. Today, the catastrophe is remembered through a sculpture depicting the families clambering up the hill. Travellers are open to climbing up Ermita Hill, where a panoramic view of Baler Bay awaits at its peak.

baler day tour package

Don’t forget to pack your picnic hampers when going to Baler! On Ermita Hill, you can grab a quick bite at several overlooking decks. There are also pavilions surrounding the area for a quiet afternoon rest. Keep in mind that there are no restaurants there, so you’ll have to bring your own food.

3. Take a historical walk

museo de baler

Nestled in the centre of the town are landmarks that commemorate the heritage of the municipality. Museo de Baler , a two-story building that stands at Quezon Park , with an extensive artwork embossed on its bricked exterior, houses historical artefacts that are reminiscent of the Spanish colonisation period. Inside the museum, you can find exhibits and artefacts dating back from the early 1600s to recent contemporary history.

Learn about the Siege of Baler at this museum, too! Afterwards, head to the next Baler tourist spot…

Baler Tourist Spot Church

The San Luis Obispo de Tolosa Parish , also known as Baler Church , was first built in 1611. A tidal wave that hit Baler in 1735 destroyed it, but fortunately, locals reconstructed it immediately after. The church made its mark in history when the Spanish forces used it as a garrison during the Spanish Colonial Era.

For the final stop of your historical tour, head over to the replica of Doña Aurora Aragon-Quezon’s ancestral house , just in front of the Baler Church. Doña Aurora is known for her heroic acts in fighting for women’s right to vote. She also served as the first chairperson of the Philippine Red Cross. Because of her remarkable contributions to Philippine society, the province of Aurora was named after her.

4. Take a creative shot with the Baler sign

Baler sign

The Baler sign is so famous for photo-ops, there’s barely a time tourists aren’t huddled around it. Get creative with your travel buddies and strike a pose around the sign.

5. Bum on a private beach at Dicasalarin Cove

Dicasalarin Cove

A hidden treasure half an hour away from the town proper, the Dicasalarin Cove is a private and serene place for you to enjoy. Since there’s an entrance fee of ₱300, you won’t find crowds of beachgoers flocking to this area. So i f you fancy some beach bumming on white sands with pristine waters, make a beeline for this private area . Since it’s a cove, the strong waves are blocked off by the craggy mountain lining, allowing you to enjoy a breezy afternoon by the beach.

It’s not that far off the town proper, but you’d have to go across some extremely steep slopes and sharp curves on a mountain before you get there. Don’t fret, ‘cause the spectacular views on the mountain road are also well part of the trip. Also, when you get to Dicasalarin Cove, you’ll see a lighthouse nearby. If you’re up to the challenge, you can walk up to the top.

6. Reach the top of Baler Lighthouse

Baler Tourist Spot Lighthouse

Speaking of lighthouses… If you’re looking for a Baler tourist spot that has the best views, you won’t find it elsewhere than at the top of Baler Lighthouse . It’s an abandoned lighthouse-turned-tourist attraction because of its stunning coastal views. The trek to reach the lighthouse could prove to be a challenge, and we discourage you from going there during the rainy season — when the paths could get dangerously slippery.

7. Cross the Baler Hanging Bridge

baler day tour package

Prepare your mobile cameras and DSLRs for this one, folks! The Baler Hanging Bridge is a picturesque landmark that connects the barangays (neighbourhoods) of Tibang and Sabang . It’s been serving the locals for decades and has played a crucial role in their daily errands.

As you go across the bridge, gawk at the vast mountainscapes and tranquil estuary in the distance. This hanging bridge has become a very popular Baler tourist spot that some souvenirs stores have set up shop at both ends of the bridge.

8. Conquer the rock formations at Diguisit and Aniao islet

Diguisit Rock Formations

Aside from being a great Baler surfing spot, Diguisit Beach is most famous for its crystal clear waters and unique shapes of rocks. Aniao , the most famous rock formation in the area, is actually two small islands naturally moulded by the hammering waves of the Pacific. Having stood years of crashing waves, the rock formations have formed into a beautiful rugged surface visitors love taking photos with.

When the tide is low, you can head over to the rock formations and take some Insta-worthy snaps.  Depending on the season, the waters around the rock formations also serve as either a surf spot or a diving spot.

9. Go snorkelling

snorkelling in baler

Aside from surfing, there are other water sports you can try out in Baler. Snorkelling is ideal at many diving spots in Baler, especially from March to June when the ocean is calmer. You can rent diving gear from different sports resorts around town.

10. Participate in a beach cleanup

Ocean Care Movement

As a way of giving back, travellers can help keep the beaches pristine either individually or through an organised beach clean-up. Some Baler residents started an initiative, the Ocean Care Movement , to maintain the healthy and clean coasts of Baler, and visitors are more than welcome to participate.

Other noteworthy activities in nearby towns

Make the most out of your road trip! If you plan to visit every Baler tourist spot, consider taking a side trip to these beautiful spots in Baler’s neighbouring towns.

11. Travel back through time inside the Balete Millenium Tree

Baler Tourist Spot Balete Tree

In a nearby town called Maria Aurora , you’ll find an enormous tree. Standing at approximately 200 feet, the Balete Millenium Tree is so massive that you can take a walk inside! Many locals believe that this Balete tree has been home to many mythical creatures from Philippine folklore.

baler balete tree

Several Filipino superstitions surround Balete trees. But more than that, it’s the olden age and massive size of Aurora’s Millennium Tree that makes it a fascination among locals and tourists alike. The tree is believed to be more than 600 years old, with a size so wide, that it would take 50 grown men to stand hand-in-hand to fully circle the trunk. The roots of the tree have also towered high enough to form caves that visitors can explore and climb up.

12. Plunge into the cold streams of Ditumabo Mother Falls

baler day tour package

Aside from having multiple surfing spots, Aurora is also home to many waterfalls in its forests. One, in particular, is dubbed by the locals as The Mother Falls , as it is about 140 feet tall. A waterfall that high makes the water come down at blazing speeds. The Mother Falls is in Ditumabo, San Luis , which is a neighbouring town about a 20-minute away of drive from Baler.

Baler Tourist Spot Mother Falls

To get there, you’d have to trek through rocky paths and small streams between a lush rainforest. It’s a challenging trip, but undoubtedly fun and worthwhile!

Ditumabo Mother Falls

Although a fairly easy hike, the rocky path leading to the cold blue pool is a thrilling adventure enough — especially for those of us coming from a bustling urban jungle.

13. Wander on a road trip toward the north

baler day tour package

You can take on the roads headed further north, if you have the time. With no particular destination in mind, simply buckle up your seatbelts and let the road decide where you’ll go. On the way, you can find several picturesque destinations and many other interesting spots.

Baler Tourist Spot Ampere Beach

Consider taking a few moments to bask on the exquisite Ampere Beach . It’s a boulder beach with huge rocks and some rock formations. However, the waves are very strong here, so swimming is prohibited.

If you can’t be bothered with a Do-It-Yourself trip to Baler and would rather leave your vacation to the hands of the more experienced tour guides, there are several tour packages available for those travelling to Baler.

Where to Eat in Baler

There are plenty of places to enjoy great Filipino food, but for my taste, you’ve got to hit a couple of spots. First, I recommend checking out Gerry’s Chinese and Seafood Restaurant. Fresh seafood on the coast? Of course.

Buffet Lunch at Gerry’s Chinese and Seafood Restaurant

Locals recommend it, and the prices are reasonable. If you’re looking for something up a level, check out Bahia de Baler. For something with a Western flair and a good place at the beach, Bay’s Inn has reasonable prices and a great location.

Planning your Trip to Baler

Once you’re in Baler, you’ll probably find many options that will pull you in many directions. If you’re a surfer, you’ll head to Sabang Beach. Near the beach are many surfboard rental places if you didn’t bring your board or want to try it out. Sabang is known to have a friendly touch for beginners.

Inside Dona Aurora Aragon Quezon House

I recommend the beach, but you should also travel inland and go for a freshwater swim at Culayan Falls near San Luis. Ditumabo Falls is a bit more dramatic, also near San Luis.

Mother Falls (photo by Chris Juloya)

Local history is fascinating and dates back to 1609, so check out Baler’s Museum, Ermita Hill, and give yourself a day to wander the Baler historical trail . The Baler Catholic Church has been renovated and is a nice excellent stop.

If you want to explore the rainforest to see wildlife and the beautiful canopy, you should do the Baler Adventure tour .

Best Things to Do and See in Baler

Diguisit anyaw islets.

Diguisit Anyaw Islets

Said to be a different experience between low and high tide changes; those who may have experienced going to the place during its low tide will be able to climb its rocky formations, which will have been a great experience. Otherwise, climbing can be challenging as some rocks are submerged in water. Luckily, our experience is of the former.

Right across the Diguisit beach area, you can find a trail to Diguisit Waterfalls. Just don’t visit it during summertime to avoid disappointment.

Dona Aurora Aragon Quezon House

Dona Aurora Aragon Quezon House

If you’ve read my blog before, you know I’m into the heritage houses of past famous families of the Philippines. The drama surrounding the assassination of Dona Aurora and her daughter is well-known in the Philippines, which is why the province is named after her. Located right in front of the Church of Baler, the Dona Aurora Aragon Quezon House is a rebuilt replica at the corner of San Luis St and Rizal St.

Baler 400 Years Monument

Baler 400 Years Monument

Built in 2011, the 400 years monument was created to celebrate the 400 years that Baler has existed. The actual anniversary was in 2009, but the memorial was unveiled two years later. It’s a 40-foot-tall monument. It comprises four pillars, representing the four hundred years of Baler Township.

The Museo de Baler

Museo de Baler

Quezon Park is an excellent place and home to a few other sights, but the Museo de Baler is a central destination. A historical tale of the town is represented with photographs of provincial leaders, President Quezon, and his family, and photos from the Japanese, Spanish, and American periods of Baler’s history.

Visiting Museo de Baler is a great way to learn more about Baler’s rich history and culture. As you walk through the museum, you’ll be able to explore a variety of artifacts and exhibits that tell the story of Baler’s past. From its early beginnings to its present-day significance, the museum offers a wealth of information about the town’s journey.

You’ll also find a special exhibit dedicated to the legendary “Siege of Baler,” a battle in 1898 between Spanish forces and Filipino troops. This exhibit highlights the bravery and courage of the Filipino soldiers and their eventual victory against the Spanish. Whether you’re a history buff or simply curious about Baler’s past, Museo de Baler is an excellent place to explore and better understand the town’s heritage.

Visit Ditumabo or Mother Falls

Ditumabo Falls

In the town of San Luis, the hidden beauty of Aurora is the grandest of all waterfalls in the province: the Ditumabo Falls, commonly known as Mother Falls. The waterfalls are some 15-meter high, dropping to a small reservoir, creating a green-colored natural swimming pool that can accommodate over 100 persons.

Sometimes the surprise is a visit to a beach I’d never seen before – like Amper, Borlongan, or Cemento – and other times, it’s finding a place to eat recommended by someone else staying in town. There are a lot of great day trips, so it’s easy to plan things to be complete, but resist the temptation and leave some of your time wide open.

Baler Travel Guide: Aurora’s Prime Surfing Destination

Baler

Heading to Baler soon? Then this Baler travel guide will surely come handy. Provided in this guide are necessary information a tourist needs to know before visiting this surfing paradise in Luzon. Information such as travel requirements, how to get there, where to stay, activities, sample itinerary, budget, and other tips.

Haller, Baler!

Mention Baler and the first thing that will pop in everyone’s mind is surfing! And this without a doubt is true because Sabang Beach is a real surfer’s paradise. But more than surfing, the town is increasingly becoming popular not only to surfing enthusiasts, primarily because of its natural beauty, historical significance and other attractions.

Baler is the capital of the province of Aurora. It is situated on the east coast of Luzon, fronting the roaring waves of Pacific Ocean and enclosed by the mountains of Sierra Madre. The town’s relative isolation has preserved much of its historical sites, cultural heritage and tradition that are all deeply rooted on its vibrant past.

Baler

Looking back, there are major events in the past three centuries that marked significantly in the town’s history: on December 27, 1735, a phenomenal tidal wave (“tromba marina” in Spanish) wiped out the coastal town; from June 27, 1898 to June 2, 1899, fifty four soldiers of Spanish Army barricaded inside the town’s church and bore the brunt of the Philippine revolutionary forces; and in 1979, the Hollywood classic film “Apocalypse Now” filmed their surfing scenes in Sabang Beach. All these plus all those little folklore and stories shaped the town to what it is now.

Baler is Baler! It has unique identity and charm that sets it apart from other places in the country. Have a bit of adventure, a lesson in history and commune with nature, visit Baler!

Where to Eat in Baler

When in Baler, dining should not be a problem. Most major hotels in Sabang have their own restaurants that are open to public. Kubli Bistro, Crash Pad Baler, Aliya Surf Cam Restaurant, Bayler’s Inn, Bay’s Inn Hungry Surfer Restaurant and Baler Surfer’s Grill are some of the most popular restaurants in the area.

My personal favorite is Kubli Bistro with their good pizza, paella and other Mexican and Filipino foods. Bayler’s Inn is also worth a try with their Tuna Carbonara and Longanisa Aglio Olia Pasta as well as their Chocnut Turon Ala Mode. If you are into buffet, Chef Jerry Shan’s Place in the plaza is the place to be for only P199 per person. Night life is limited to restaurants along Sabang Beach.

BALER ITINERARY: 14 Best Things to Do & Places to Visit

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double check with the authorities or other concerned entities for the latest updates.

#BalerBalikan. That was our hashtag when I first set foot in Baler with friends. I got a message from a friend asking me if I wanted to come join him on a trip to Baler. I hit back with a resounding yes. We found ourselves at 1 am traveling from EDSA to NLEX and SCTEX. We finally arrived in Baler very early in the morning. And left on the same day at 8 pm. It was sweet and short. Like a whirlwind romance. Wuw.

Months later, I was back with the Poor Traveler team, and then for the third time with my relatives. And recently, I returned with the whole North Philippines Visitors Bureau’s Lakbay Norte 8 participants. You would think I’d be tired of Baler by now but I still enjoyed every bit of it. I think my friends and I fell four letters short when we coined our hashtag on our very first trip. It should have been this — #BalerBinabalikan.

Baler, despite its growing tourism industry, has maintained its laidback vibe which I love. The scenic drive presents travelers with a long (sometimes winding) stretch of lush fields and forests and provincial tableau. Baler and other nearby towns boast various attractions, whether involving nature and challenging activities or downtown chill time. Here are some of the places to visit and things to do in Baler.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

SABANG BEACH

baler day tour package

Sabang Beach is synonymous to the town of Baler. Most of the resorts and business establishments are concentrated around the beach area. The sand is fine and brown (dark brown when wet) but it actually doesn’t matter because the main draw is the swell. Here, beginners and pro surfers gather for the love of riding the waves. During high noon and when the waters are flat, the blue hue is visible instead of the foamy swells. After a day of being tossed here and there by the waves, reward yourself with a massage or spa service.

Rates: Surfboard rental + instructor fee: P350/hour Surfboard rental only: P200/hour or P800/day

DITUMABO FALLS

baler day tour package

Some say that when visiting waterfalls, the best time is during the wet/rainy season because the cascades are raging and more visible. But rainy or not, Ditumabo “Mother” Falls is a sight to behold. It’s grand and imposing. And cold. I mean, the water is cold. Hehe. To stand in her presence and meet her face to face, you need to take a 20-minute trek. The terrain is mostly flat with a few gentle slopes and a couple of boulder-laden river crossing. Near the jump-off point, there are food stalls. If you are bringing a car, parking is available. Although Ditumabo is located in San Luis, you can easily reach it from Baler.

Entrance Fee: P30/person Parking Fee: P30/vehicle Tour Guide Fee: P200/guide Location: Ditumabo Mother Falls Street, San Luis, Aurora

CAUNAYAN FALLS

baler day tour package

Also located in San Luis, just south of Baler, Caunayan Falls is much easier to reach than the more famous Ditumabo Falls. The cascade is also gentler than the Mother Falls. The cold water is clear and shallow. We went there early in the morning, so it was like we own the place. Although shallow, the current can get strong, especially near the falls. You may add this to your itinerary or make this an alternative to Ditumabo if you got a senior companion who can only trek a short distance. You can access it through Amatorio Resort in Barangay L. Pimentel. From the parking area, you just need to walk a short distance, not more than five minutes to reach it.

Entrance Fee: P20 (adults) / P10 (children) / P15 (senior) Cottage Rental: P200 (small) / P500 (big) Location: Barangay L. Pimentel, San Luis, Aurora

DIGUISIT FALLS

baler day tour package

You might miss the jump-off point as this is located on the side of the road. If you are coming from the town, it would be on the right-hand side of the road. Across the jump-off point, your marker would be an area with cottages and tables for rent. The climb is easy and quick. In less than 10 minutes, you can reach the falls. Just be careful climbing up and going down because it can get slippery.

Entrance Fee: FREE Cottage Rental: P200 Landmark: No particular landmark, but you will notice vehicles parked on the side of the road and on the other side, lining the coast, are rows of cottages. In Google Maps, it’s somewhere in between Dragonfly Resort and Sea Grace Villas.

DIGUISIT BEACH & ANIAO ROCK FORMATIONS

baler day tour package

Just a few meters away from the Diguisit Falls are Diguisit Beach, Aniao (also Anyao) Rock Formations, and Lukso-Lukso Islets (or Diguisit Islets). Unlike the other beaches in Baler, the rocky feature of this place makes it a unique beach destination in town. During low tide, you can explore by walking further to the islets. Make sure you wear thick-soled footwear as most rocks are sharp. If you are spending more than one day in Baler and you got no problem waking up early, go there to witness the sunrise.

Entrance: FREE unless you want to enter through the resort which collects P20. Cottage Rental: P300-500 (nipa hut)

CEMENTO BEACH

Aside from Sabang, one of the surfing spots in Baler is Cemento Beach, said to be much more challenging than Sabang. Cemento’s Cobra Reef got its name from its waves, which resemble the head of a cobra about to strike. Surfers prefer to surf in the morning when the water’s clarity is glasslike (which depends on the weather condition).

baler day tour package

You may access Cemento Beach via Nature Green Forest Resort if you want to experience both the waves and calm waters. For a resort that is located by the road (and a bridge), it still retains the raw beauty of nature. Kayaking along the tributary is one of its draws. It also has a floating cottage, a pool, and nipa hut cottages.

Location: Sitio Cemento, Barangay Zabali, Baler, Aurora Resort Contact Details: +63 977 815 7346 / +63912 208 3477

DICASALARIN COVE

baler day tour package

If you continue driving beyond Diguisit beach, you will reach the entrance to Dicasalarin Cove near the end of the national/public road, which is punctuated by the PAG-ASA Radar Station. Dicasalarin is a private beach. To go there, you need to register first at Costa Pacifica. The road is too steep and winding, so you need a car or hire a habal-habal.

Opening hours: 8:00 am-5:00 pm Entrance Fee: P300 (P100 for Costa Pacifica guests) Habal-habal ride: P200-P300 roundtrip

baler day tour package

Another way is to avail SeaSta Beach Resort ‘s boat tour. The travel time from Baler Fishport to Dicasalarin is over an hour. Note that the boat won’t dock but would just stop and float around Dicasalarin Bay to let you do a photo op with the cove as your backdrop. After the tour, you might want to try water sports with friends or family. Buoyancy Water Sports is also stationed at Baler Fishport. Choose your poison: Flying Fish, UFO Couch or Banana Boat.

BALETE TREE

baler day tour package

This gigantic Balete Tree is often associated with the more popular town of Baler but it is actually located in the neighboring town of Maria Aurora. This 600-year old legend has become one of the well-known tourist attractions in the area.

Entrance Fee: P15 Parking Fee: P10 per vehicle If you want to go inside the tree: P10

HISTORICAL TOUR

baler day tour package

The town center is not the typical commercial hub that other towns have where most of the business and trading happen. Baler’s town breathes history, a constant reminder of their heritage and how the town came to be. You don’t need to walk too long or ride a tricycle to cover all these landmarks: Baler Church, Doña Aurora House, Quezon Park, Museo de Baler, and the Baler Icon.

baler day tour package

Baler has a dizzying array of food options, from restaurants to side-street vendors and peddlers. Here are some of the food and restaurants that we’ve tried so far:

  • Kubli Bistro. A very cozy restaurant where you can enjoy well-presented meals while serenaded by the guest band. It was my second time here and the food selections are still impeccable. Address: Alley 2, Poblacion, Baler, Aurora Opening Hours: 4:00 pm – 12:00 mn
  • Bayler View. An alfresco type of restaurant where you can have the view of Sabang Beach. The menu contains a selection of both western and Filipino food. Address: Buton Street, Barangay Sabang, Baler, Aurora Opening Hours: 6:30 am – 8:00 pm (Sunday – Thursday) / 6:30 am – 9:00 pm (Friday to Saturday)
  • Mumunsi Café. A café that offers grub and drinks that are made of or contain local chocolate which they also produce. Address: Barangay Suklayin, Baler, Aurora
  • Myrtle Park. A hip hangout place that is also a skatepark where folks and pets mingle leisurely while enjoying the music, the food, and the drinks. They constantly update the menu as it is collaborative in nature. Just let the good vibes flow. Address: Buton Street, Barangay Sabang, Baler, Aurora Opening Hours: 6:00 pm – 1:00 am (daily)
  • Dialyn’s Bakeshop. An established pasalubong bakeshop in Baler famous for their brazo de mercedes, yema swirl, asado buns, and more. Address: Poblacion, Baler, Aurora Opening Hours: 7:00 am – 8:00 pm (daily)
  • Bike Kings Kitchen. A bicycle-themed restaurant. It has two floors and the interior is laden with decorations related to cycling. Address: Aurora Street, Poblacion, Baler, Aurora

Opening Hours: 6:00 am – 9:00 pm (daily)

  • Gerry Shan’s Picnic Bay. An affordable all-you-can-eat restaurant that could make you forget, not your name, but your diet. What diet? You’ve been warned. Address: Quezon Street, Poblacion, Baler, Aurora Opening Hours: 10:00 am – 8:00 pm
  • Baler Local Products. Guys! We can’t get enough of Great Harvest Creamy Peanut Butter! Other not-to-be-missed local products are Pure Yema Spread, suman (sticky rice), and bukayo (sweetened coconut strips).
  • Street food! You will find Button Street lined with street food vendors and peddlers. There are kwek-kwek , isaw , babrbecue, betamax , siomai, adobong mani , and more!

ERMITA HILL

baler day tour package

Along the highway, on the way to Cemento, Diguisit, and Dicasalarin, you will see Tromba Marina, a sculpture depicting one event that wiped out the entire town. Well, almost. According to locals, when a tsunami hit the town of Baler, only seven families (and a priest) survived by running uphill. That historic hill is Ermita Hill. VINCENT GONZALES ART MUSEUM

baler day tour package

Strolling around Baler, you will get this laidback, bohemian vibe where you can see a pop of color here and there, murals, and a number of hotels and restaurants with unique and creative concepts. Local artist, Vincent Gonzales, put up a contemporary art museum that showcases his works. Although not exactly located in Baler, it is very accessible as it is just along the highway on the way to Baler. When we visited, the artworks displayed mirrored Baler’s landscape (and seascape). Other works include mixed-media arts and surreal pieces with social commentaries.

Opening Hours: 10:00 am – 5:00 pm (Sunday – Friday); CLOSED (Saturday) Location: Nueva Ecija-Aurora Road, San Luis, Aurora Contact Detail: +63 920 224 1524 Official Website: vincent-gonzales-art-museum.business.site

Well, that depends on who are you with. :p Aside from the mini-golf courses, it also has a tower with a trap door, artic=ficial waterfall, and bungalow huts. When we were there, the entrance fee was P50 per adult and P25 per child, inclusive of unlimited playtime and golf gear. You may contact the management for the updated rates.

Baler has flourished as one of the top surfing spots in the Philippines. Blissfully tucked in the province of Aurora, this once sleepy municipality is now a popular tourist destination dappled with resorts, cafes and surf shops that have never stopped expanding. But Baler is not all about the endless surf of Sabang Beach, you haven’t really fully experienced this bucolic town if you haven’t gone on a day tour. Explore Baler and discover its unspoiled waterfalls, ruggedly enchanting azure beaches, gorgeous cliffs that drop straight into ceaseless waves and age-old historic edifices.

⊗  Gerry Shan’s – Eat-all-You-Can for Php 199 with bottomless iced tea. Nothing special about their food, we honestly find it too salty. But you can give it a shot as it is featured and recommended by famed Travel Shows and other travel blogs.

Facade of Baler Church

The San Luis Obispo de Tolosa Parish, or more commonly known as Baler Church, was constructed back in 1611. It first stood on the site of an important battle called the "Siege of Baler" which took place during the Philippine Revolution.

The church was initially made from bamboo and nipa. Years after, it was renovated using stones and rocks that were held together by lime and honey. However, the church was later destroyed by a massive tidal wave known as "Tromba Marina" in 1735. Soon after that natural disaster, locals rebuilt the chapel on the highest point in San Luis Street in Barangay Buhangin, where it currently stands.

During the Spanish period in the country, Spanish forces made the church their garrison until they surrendered it in 1899. Aside from this, Baler Church was also the home of a famous large bell called La Campana De Baler. Fray Jose de Esperagoza brought it to the province in the 17th century. The bell later became well-known for its loud echoing sounds that even reached the neighboring towns of San Luis, Maria, and Dipaculao.

In light of its cultural significance in Baler, the National Historical Institute proclaimed it as a historical landmark in 2000.

11. Baler Hanging Bridge

Baler Hanging Bridge above a river

The Baler Hanging Bridge is situated along Zabali Road and connects the barangays of Tibang and Sabang. The bridge is made of wooden planks and railings that are suspended above a wide river by sturdy metal cables. It measures about a meter in width and is over a hundred meters long.

While locals often use it for their daily errands, it has become one of the well-known tourist attractions in Baler, Aurora over the years due to the stunning views it offers. As you make your way from one end of the bridge to the other, you will be able to get a panoramic view of the river and the vast mountainscape in the distance. Travelers can also catch a glimpse of the river's opening that connects to Baler Bay.

Visitors who traverse the bridge are treated to a refreshing breeze as well, thanks to its position. Before reaching the other end, you can also take the time to take photos of the beautiful scenery around you. On either end of the walkway are a couple of souvenir shops that feature local delicacies and trinkets that showcase the area's culture.

10. Baler Lighthouse

Baler Lighthouse on a hill in Baler

Another popular spot that provides tourists with stunning views of Baler's natural wonders is the Baler Lighthouse, one of the top lighthouses in the Philippines. This white structure sits on one of the hills of Sitio Tibag. After arriving at the parking area, visitors will have to hike up the hill to reach the towering structure.

Once you reach the top of the hill, you are immediately rewarded with a stunning view of Baler Bay's deep blue waters. You can also see Diguisit Beach from the hill's peak. For travelers looking for an even better vantage point, you can climb up the steps that circle the lighthouse to reach its top.

From the top, you can feel the sea breeze blowing while enjoying the panoramic view of the bay and the nearby hills. You can also see the structure's huge light and solar panels that power it. While it no longer serves as a beacon for ships coming to Baler, tourists still drop by to take in the view.

9. Museo de Baler

Immerse yourself in the rich culture of the province by visiting their local museum, Museo de Baler. One of the must-visit museums in the Philippines, the two-story building stands in Quezon Park in Barangay Poblacion. Even before entering the museum, you can already see a beautiful artwork on its red brick exterior.

The installation depicts crucial moments and individuals throughout the province's history.  Meanwhile, a statue of the late Philippine President Manuel L. Quezon, a native of Baler, sits in the center of the park.

Inside the museum, you will see exhibits and several historical artifacts that date back to the Spanish colonization period in the Philippines. Among these items are old letters from missionaries who lived in the region from the early 1600s up to the late 1890s.

On its second floor, visitors can find pieces relating to the Siege of Baler. These artworks include paintings of those who took part in the fight and those who survived it as well. Along with the historical pieces, the museum also features more contemporary pieces of art. The most notable ones are the props from the 2008 Filipino drama film named after the province.

8. Dona Aurora Aragon-Quezon Home

Dona Aurora Aragon-Quezon Home in Baler

A few minutes away from the museum is another historic site: a replica of the ancestral home of Aurora Quezon, the wife of the late president Manuel L. Quezon. The cement and wooden home is situated on the corner of Rizal Street and San Luis street. It also features a roof made from dried nipa leaves, which was often used for traditional homes in the Philippines.

However, the house is not an exact copy of Aurora's original home, as local authorities recreated it with sturdier material. Despite this, it still features many items, such as a coal-heated iron that were likely used by Aurora's family back in the day. The interior also houses a large colored painting of Aurora and the late president.

While Aurora was widely known as the second First Lady of the Philippines, she was an important historical figure in her own right as well. Aurora gained the respect of her fellow Baler natives and other Filipinos through her various humanitarian efforts. Among these was her time as the first Chairperson of the Philippine National Red Cross and her involvement in advocating for Filipino women's right to vote.

In honor of her notable contributions, the province where Baler is located, Aurora, was named after her.

View of the Balete Tree's roots and canopy

The Balete Tree in Aurora is known for being the biggest of its kind in the whole continent of Asia. This enormous tree is cared for in a park inside the municipality of Maria Aurora. This tree has been around for over 600 years and has grown to about 200 feet.

Balete trees are also often regarded as homes of fairies and other magical creatures in Philippine mythology. Whether or not you believe in myths, you can slip past an opening between the roots of the tree here to inspect for yourself.

The tree is so huge that several people can fit inside its interior of twisted roots. The interior appears almost like an otherworldly destination, as light can only come in from the gaps between the entangling roots.

From inside the tree, you can climb up the tangle of roots to get a closer look at the tree's large crown. However, scaling the tree from the inside involves squeezing through tight gaps. Aside from this, travelers can also climb the tree from the outside by clinging to the sturdy roots that make up the gigantic evergreen.

6. Diguisit and Aniao Islet

One rock formation in Diguisit Beach, Baler

Diguisit Beach is one of the popular surfing spots in Baler and is located about 11 KM from the town proper. In addition to the constant waves that are great for surfing, this white sand beach also boasts unique rock formations and crystal clear water.

The most famous formations here are the Aniao Islets, which are two small islands. These islets were naturally shaped by the strong waves that slam against the shore when the winds are strong. Surrounding these sturdy formations were rocky landscapes that become pools of cool water whenever the tide is low.

  • Book a Dingalan Aurora day tour

Each islet is also home to small patches of greenery that make their profile even more unique. The islets make for amazing photos at sunset when the tide is low, and the orange-pinkish hues reflect on the pools of water surrounding them. Aside from the natural formations, Diguisit Beach is also known as an ideal location for snorkeling from May to November when the winds are weaker.

5. Ampere Beach and Rock Formations

Rock formations at Ampere Beach, Baler

Another destination that features rock formations is the Ampere Beach, just west of Baler Beach. In contrast to the finer sands of most beaches that line Baler Bay, this spot boasts a shoreline comprised mainly of different-sized pebbles. While it is not an ideal swimming spot due to the strong waves that lap the shore, it still attracts tourists thanks to its unique landscape.

Aside from admiring the sturdy rock formations that jut from the beach's waters, tourists can also make their own "rock formations" with the smooth pebbles that make up the shore. Feel free to get creative as you stack rocks on top of each other, and make sure to snap a photo of your small towers for a unique souvenir! Though the pebble beach and the large rock formations are the main draws of this attraction, travelers can find a lesser-known spot just past the karst-like walls.

Beyond the rock walls, you can find a cave. Locals are said to forecast the weather by measuring how loud the waves slam against the interior of the cave. The louder it gets, the worse the weather would supposedly be.

4. Ermita Hill

The entrance to Ermita Hill

Ermita Hill is a historical and natural landmark located in Barangay Zabali. Its cultural significance dates back to 1735, when a large tidal wave called Tromba Marina struck the region. During the natural disaster, the residents headed up the hill to seek refuge from the fast-rising waters that were engulfing the homes.

However, only a few families managed to make it up the hill in time, while the strong surge of water wiped out the rest. To commemorate the hardships that the natives had to overcome, statues depicting people helping each other scale the hill were placed here. Most of the artworks were put along the cemented path that leads up to the hilltop.

Once you reach the top, you will enter a deck that provides a panoramic view of Baler Bay, its surrounding forestry, and the vast Pacific Ocean. Take your time to relax and take photos before heading back down. There are also gazebos where you can sit and take in the view and a modest chapel where you can say a prayer.

3. Dicasalarin Cove

View of Dicasalrin Cove from a nearby hill

Dicasalarin Cove is a private-owned beach that attracts tourists with its pristine waters and stunning white sand beach. The beach is surrounded by natural landscapes that often break the waves, making the water here calmer than most beaches in Baler. Since the area is managed by the owners of Costa Pacifica, a nearby resort, travelers must first register here to reach the cove.

The cove sits about 10 KM away from the resort and best accessed by car or renting out tricycles or motorcycles. After arriving at the cove, you will be greeted by a picturesque shoreline that stretches for miles on both sides. Unwind and enjoy the cove's cool waters by going for a swim or snorkeling.

Aside from the cove's shore, travelers can also head up to the nearby lighthouse to get a beautiful view of the bay. Guests also frequent the lighthouse because of its more modern and geometric shape. If you want to extend your stay on this secluded cove, you can also rent tents, air beds, and sleeping bags. You can set up camp along the shoreline to fall asleep to the gentle sound of waves lapping the beach.

2. Ditumabo Falls

View of Ditumabo Falls from a natural pool

The Ditumabo Falls is a grand waterfall that stands at about 140 feet tall. Locals commonly refer to it as The Mother Falls, largely due to its sheer size, especially when compared to other waterfalls in the province. Though it is located in the neighboring town of San Luis, this attraction is often visited by tourists when staying in Baler since it is only about 15 KM from Baler's town proper.

Nestled in a lush forest, travelers first have to trek through rivers and rocky paths to reach the majestic waterscape. The trek can also prove to be difficult as the rocks in the rivers can be slippery. While the journey to the falls is not smooth, just getting to see it up close makes the trip worthwhile.

After arriving at the falls, you will be greeted by natural pools that the clear, ice-cold water drops into. The rocky basin is large and is ideal for swimming, so make sure to take a dip and take in the grandeur of this natural wonder.

View of Sabang Beach's shoreline

Sabang Beach is a gray sand beach that is widely regarded as the birthplace of surfing in Baler. Thanks to the frequent waves that approach the shore, it is a great place to learn how to surf for the first time. Various shops and resorts in Baler that line the shore offer lessons for beginners and even more advanced surfers.  It is one of the top places to visit in Baler, Aurora.

Baler natives began to surf in 1976, when the epic war movie "Apocalypse Now" filmed in Charlie's Point, a resort along this beach. Soon after the production wrapped up filming, locals taught themselves how to ride the waves with surfboards that the movie's crew had left behind. Since then, more and more people come to this beach to learn as well.

Thanks to the large crowds of surfers that the waves here attract, the beach scene is often lively. After you've had your fill of surfing, you can then enjoy the delicious cuisine served at the beachside restaurants. Travelers can also stay until after the sun sets to partake in the local nightlife scene or to simply go on a stroll along the two-kilometer-long stretch of sand.

Along with surfing, guests often come to this beach to marvel at the stunning colors of a sunrise. Since the beach faces the east and opens to the Pacific Ocean, travelers can get an unobstructed view of the sun as it breaks through the night sky and paints it in warm, orange hues.
