Travelling on the Brockenbahn in winter is nothing short of magical

On your next trip to Germany , why not ditch the car and treat yourself to a mind-blowing scenic train ride instead? A slow, leisurely journey through dense forests, snow-blanketed mountain roads or alongside sparkling lakes is guaranteed to be the highlight of your German holiday. Here’s a list of train routes in Germany that promise incredible scenery. Of course, you can choose to take each listed ride the other way round.

Did you know you can now travel with Culture Trip? Book now and join one of our premium small-group tours to discover the world like never before.

Höllentalbahn: Freiburg im Breisgau to Donaueschingen

The Höllentalbahn translates to Hell Valley Railway, but in reality, it’s a heavenly journey to take when you are in the Black Forest . This route connects Freiburg im Breisgau with Donaueschingen via the dramatic Dreisam river valley and takes around 90 minutes. It’s among the steepest rail lines in the country, rising from 278m (912ft) to 885m (2,904ft) in altitude during its course. The most exciting part of this excursion is crossing the Ravenna Gorge on the 40m- (131ft-) high Ravenna Bridge.

If you’re in no hurry to head back, book a room at the Flair Hotel Grüner Baum on the outskirts of town. With a range of room sizes and an on-site restaurant, it’s just a short walk from the source of the Danube.

You’ll cross the Ravenna Bridge on the Höllentalbahn

Cologne to Mainz

For sweeping views of the Rhine Valley, book a seat on this route . The 139km (86mi) journey takes an average of one hour and 40 minutes. If you wish to make a stop in the pretty town of Koblenz on the way, that is an option as well. From your train window, enjoy views of the Rhine flanked by cliffs and with ships bobbing in the horizon. The route is punctuated with picture-postcard towns and hills crowned by ancient castles, making it one of the most romantic train rides in the country. When travelling from Cologne to Mainz, grab a seat on the left side of the train for the best views (and on the right side if you are travelling from Mainz to Cologne).

Mainz is the wine capital of Germany and a vibrant university city, so it’s worth sticking around to explore. Peek inside the city’s beautiful churches, wander around the medieval old town and put your feet up at the centrally located me and all hotel Mainz for a night or two.

See beautiful castles, such as the Ehrenfels Castle, on a train ride through the Rhine Valley

Konstanz to Offenburg

Take a memorable train ride from the picturesque Konstanz by Lake Constance to the land of Hansel and Gretel , the Black Forest. This route covers 129km (80mi) in three hours and 55 minutes on average (with stops). Soon after leaving Konstanz, you’ll see mesmerising scenes of pine forests, which will gradually give way to vistas of the impenetrably dense Black Forest, lush meadows and quaint hamlets. The train meanders over the Hornberg Viaduct and the beautiful town of Triberg on its course.

In Offenburg, stay overnight at the Mercure Hotel Offenburg am Messeplatz. It’s not far from the train station, and there’s an indoor pool you can take a dip in before breakfast in the morning.

The train from Konstanz to Offenburg goes through the charming town of Hornberg via its viaduct

Munich to Neuschwanstein Castle

Neuschwanstein Castle , the most spectacular castle in the world, is reachable via a 91km (57mi) scenic train ride from Munich. Journeying across the Bavarian countryside from Munich to Füssen is equivalent to travelling through a picture postcard. Expect to see endless lush meadows, rolling hills and tiny villages. No matter how well prepared you are, you won’t be able to stop your heart from skipping a beat when you see Neuschwanstein Castle set against the majestic Bavarian Alps for the first time. To catch a perfect view of the castle from the train, remember to sit on the left side.

Though you can’t actually stay in the Neuschwanstein Castle itself, you can book a room at Villa Ludwig Suite Hotel just down the hill to make sure the fairytale citadel is the first thing you see when you draw the curtains in the morning.

Step into a fairytale at Neuschwanstein Castle

Munich to Mittenwald

Taking about one hour and 51 minutes, this 81km (50mi) train ride to one of the most beautiful alpine towns, Mittenwald, is a brilliant day-trip idea from Munich. En route, enjoy quintessential Bavarian countryside panoramas of the snow-capped mountains, cute little villages and green fields. In the cold months, this region transforms into a snowy winter wonderland.

For a place to stay, we recommend a guest room at Post Hotel Mittenwald . Here, you’ll be close to the centre of town and have an indoor pool and Bavarian-style spa to keep you occupied when you’re not out exploring.

Explore the picturesque town of Mittenwald

Brockenbahn: Harz Steam Railway Route

This train journey is reason enough to travel to the Harz Mountains . The historic steam Brocken Railway starts at Drei Annen Hohne station and meanders through Harz National Park to reach Brocken, the highest peak (1,141m/3,744ft) in the Harz mountain range. The journey covers only 19km (12mi) but offers views of mountains and valleys that you will never forget.

Travelling through the Harz Mountains via a steam train is an experience you won’t soon forget

Three Lakes Railway: Freiburg im Breisgau to Seebrugg

When you take the Höllentalbahn (Hell Valley Railway), you can either go all the way from Freiburg to Donaueschingen or diverge southwards on the Dreiseebahn (Three Lakes Railway) from the Titisee station. The train is so named because it crosses three famous Black Forest lakes during its course – the Titisee, Windgfällweiher and Schluchsee – terminating at the Seebrugg station. Soon after leaving Titisee, you’ll be rewarded with uninterrupted, beautiful views of Bärental (Bear Valley). The Feldberg-Bärental station at 967m (3,173ft) above sea level is the most elevated point of the course. The journey covers a distance of 19km (12mi) in about an hour. Trains leave Freiburg every hour, so it’s easy to get tickets at the station without booking. However, if you do want to make time to explore the city and its enchanting old town, arrive a day early for a stay at the Alex – a chic boutique hotel that’s just five minutes from the main train station on foot.

The train station in Freiburg im Breisgau can take you to many other charming German destinations

Zugspitze Railway Route

The Bavarian Zugspitze Railway is one of four rack railways still operating in the country. It runs from Garmisch (705m/2,313ft) to just below the top of Germany’s highest mountain, Zugspitze , making it the highest railway route (2,650m/8,694ft) in the country and the biggest ascent in Europe. At the station, you need to switch to a cable car to go up to the summit. The entire journey takes around 75 minutes and is as scintillating as the destination itself.

The Zugspitzbahn is one of four rack railways in Germany

Saxon Steam Railway Route

The Saxon Steam Railway Route stretches about 100km (62mi), consisting mostly of old narrow-gauge railway lines that preserve Saxony’s heritage and culture. This nostalgic journey reveals splendid surprises and a treasure trove of natural beauty, castles and cultural icons during its course. The train meanders through Saxony, including the Elbe region, the Eastern Ore Mountains, Saxon Switzerland National Park, Upper Lusatia, Lower Silesia and the Vogtland. The culturally rich city of Dresden , the Moritzburg Castle, Leipzig , the wine town of Radebeul, the Ore Mountains and Lößnitzgrund Valley are the most popular stops on this route.

If you’re planning a stopover in Dresden, check out our pick of the best hotels in town for a place to stay.

The Moritzburg Castle is a popular stop on the Saxon Steam Railway Route

Fichtelberg Railway

The Fichtelberg Railway is a nostalgic steam locomotive that goes from Cranzahl to the popular ski resort and Germany’s highest town, Oberwiesenthal. This scenic 17km (11mi) train ride lasts about an hour and brims with views that are sure to exceed your imagination. On the way, you’ll come across many photo opportunities – Sehmatal Valley, trains passing each other at the quaint Neudorf, Hammerunterwiesenthal, Pöhlbach Valley, five bridges and a viaduct. During Christmas, you can feast your eyes on towns bathed in lights and a blanket of snow in the Ore Mountains .

Soak up the scenery of Oberwiesenthal and spend the night to catch both the sunset and sunrise if you’re an early riser. Alpina Lodge Hotel Oberwiesenthal offers a range of rooms and a spa for even more soaking.

The Fichtelberg Railway is particularly enchanting during winter

Rügen Railway: Putbus to Göhren

The Rügensche Kleinbahn (RüKB) is a narrow-gauge railway network operating on the island of Rügen , covering a distance of 24km (15mi) between Putbus and Göhren. The appeal of this rail line lies in the fact that many of the steam locomotives and wagons used in this network are more than 100 years old, allowing you to do a bit of time travel. The nostalgic train puffs through dense forests and snazzy beach resorts. Due to its leisurely pace (30kph/19mph), it’s affectionately known as Rasender Roland (Dashing Roland).

When you get to Göhren, the scenery takes on a whole new kind of appeal, with golden-sand beaches skirting the deep-blue Baltic Sea, overlooked by thick trees. Check into Travel Charme Nordperd & Villen Göhren for a day or two by the coast. It’s next to the train station and has an infinity pool and a spa.

The Rasender Roland makes its home on Rügen, Germany’s largest island

Grand Imperial Cities with Great Rail Journeys

great rail journeys berlin

Travel destinations go in and out of fashion, but there are some locations and itineraries that keep on drawing holidaymakers year in, year out. And this year, Great Rail Journeys celebrate 35 years of one of their most popular itineraries, Grand Imperial Cities.

Budapest's Parliament Building

Already visited one of the destinations or want a shorter trip?   Then do as I did and tailor-make your own itinerary with GRJ Independent to include quality hotel accommodation, excursions, and non-rail connections. I chose an early morning flight with Wizz Air to Budapest for the start of my 5-night trip, travelling on by rail to Prague and Berlin, before heading back across Europe to Brussels to pick up Eurostar to London-St Pancras.

Budapest Parliament Building from Fisherman's Bastion

My package with GRJ Independent included entrance to the lavishly decorated Matthias Church in Old Buda; a river cruise past the Gothic Parliament building and Fisherman’s Bastion viewpoint; and an 11km-ride on the unique Children’s Railway. Built in 1948 to take youngsters to an activity camp in the hills, it is now a regular service, staffed by 10 to 14-year-olds, though not- it’s important to point out – as drivers!

The Children's Railway Budapest

After two nights in Budapest, I arrived at the city’s imposing station entrance for the 6.5 hour journey to Prague, my first class carriage offering a front seat view of the changing countryside through Hungary, Slovakia and finally into the Czech Republic. Here, the 4-star Courtyard by Marriott Flora was outside the city centre but well situated on a quiet street next to a modern shopping mall and metro station.

At which point, a couple of tips.   Resist any temptation to take a large suitcase. I found luggage storage on Continental trains was almost exclusively overhead and whilst there was always some kind gentleman willing to do the honours for me, there are steps up to the trains to negotiate too. People don’t dress up here and smart casual is fine for restaurant evenings, so you don’t need a lot of clothes. Just comfy walking shoes and a few mix-and-match combinations. A separate holdall or backpack is perfect for all these small items you want to keep close or use on the train.

Prague Castle from Charles Bridge

My return journey involved a change of trains in Cologne with lunch on board as we sped through Germany towards Belgium for our Eurostar to London. On the way home, I thought back over my taster trip and three very different cities that once stood at the heart of historic empires. I’d only spent a short time in each, but it had been a great introduction and travelling by rail was a relaxing way to combine them all. I’ll definitely be going back to try them in a different season and am determined to stay for longer next time.

10 of the best train journeys in Europe, chosen by Lonely Planet

A new book on rail travel across the continent showcases gorgeous scenery, historic routes and adventures at a slower pace

R ailways in Europe are many things. With their grand stations, history and evocative destinations, they evoke a timelessness that is absent from the uniform experience of flying. In recent decades, high-speed services have complemented classic routes, while the demand for more climate-friendly travel has grown and new options have sprung up, including a recent wave of night trains.

Lonely Planet, which for nearly 50 years has championed a down-to-earth, connected style of travel, has produced a new Guide to Train Travel in Europe aimed at unlocking adventures by rail from any starting point on the continent. Here the authors pick fantastic journeys from the book.

Paris to Berlin – fast or slow

Liège-Guillemins station in Belgium, created by the architect Santiago Calatrava.

A well-established network of high-speed trains and a huge choice of slower options connects two of Europe’s great cities. A glorious three-country tour would allow you to head from Paris to Brussels, travelling on to Cologne via the space-age architecture of Liège-Guillemins station. Cologne’s cathedral is so close to the station you can hardly miss popping in before boarding an onward ICE German fast service to the capital, which takes less than five hours. To see more than the immediate surroundings of the station buildings in each city, book separate tickets for each leg at trainline.com , or add in a stop of a few hours or an overnight booking via Deutsche Bahn ( bahn.de ). A high-speed connection from Paris via Frankfurt is also possible.

Amsterdam to Vienna on the Nightjet

Passengers look outside the window of a Nightjet train at Vienna station.

One of several recent additions to Europe’s sleeper train scene, the Nightjet service operated by Austrian Railways ( oebb.at ) departs every evening at 7pm or 7.30pm from Amsterdam. As you doze off, the train will trundle alongside the Rhine, passing Cologne and Koblenz, then continuing south-east through Germany and entering Austria at Passau. A 9.19am arrival in Vienna ensures time for a lie-in and breakfast. This train can easily be combined with the Eurostar service from London or a ferry from Newcastle to Amsterdam , or from Harwich to Hoek van Holland .

Loop the loop in North Wales

A steam train on the Ffestiniog Railway, in Snowdonia.

Some of the world’s most beautiful narrow-gauge railways can be found in Wales and two of the best can be combined in a loop that takes in the mountains and coastal scenery of Snowdonia. Catch a service from Llandudno Junction – which has main line connections – down the Conwy valley to Blaenau Ffestiniog . Change for the celebrated Ffestiniog Railway , a distinctive steam-hauled service that winds 13 miles down to the coast at Porthmadog. Return via the sublime steam service of the Welsh Highland Railway under the summit of Snowdon to Caernarfon, where you can catch a bus to Bangor and main line services.

From Bastia to Ajaccio through the Corsican interior

Train passing a derelict station at Lumio, Corsica, with snow-covered mountains in the distance under a deep blue sky.

The Chemins de Fer de la Corse ( Corsican Railways ) is a narrow-gauge railway centred on Ponte Leccia – from where three main lines head to Ajaccio, Bastia and Calvi, all providing incredible views of beautiful and rugged terrain. The route linking Ajaccio and Bastia is the longest and most celebrated, taking three and a half hours, so is best done with an overnight stop, rather than attempted as a day trip. Corsica is well served by ferries from mainland France such as Toulon, Marseille and Nice, opening up a tempting train-and-ferry route from the UK.

Dublin to Madrid by train and ferry

View from the cliff walk between Bray and Greystones, with grassy cliffs and sea, in Co Wicklow, Ireland.

It is possible to head from Dublin direct to mainland Europe. A largely single-track line skirts the Irish Sea heading south as far as Wicklow before veering inland and stopping in the appealing county town of Wexford, set on the estuary of the River Slaney. It’s a short hop along the tracks from there to the port of Rosslare for the twice-weekly ferries to Bilbao , which take about 30 hours. Then it’s a five-hour rail journey on to Madrid. Recommended stops take in Burgos’s treasured cathedral, the former Spanish capital of Valladolid and Segovia’s Roman aqueduct and Alcázar fortress.

Venice to Palermo – across the water in Italy

The statue of Garibaldi outside Palermo train station, Sicily.

Heading from top to toe in Italy, this dramatic journey’s potential stopping points need no introduction. Fast Frecciarossa trains connect Venice to the gastronomic centre of Bologna in 90 minutes, with Florence 40 minutes down the line. An hour and a half further on you’re in Rome. From here the south of Italy opens up. For one of Europe’s most unusual rail experiences take a train service all the way to Sicily. At Villa San Giovanni in Calabria, you and your carriage board a dedicated ferry to Messina, in Sicily, from where the hectic fun of Palermo is a slow-rolling four and a half hours’ ride away along the coast. There are several daily intercity and night services that run from the mainland, via the ferry, through to the Sicilian capital including sleepers direct from Milan, Genoa and Pisa.

From coast to coast, via a mountain high – Oslo to Bergen

A Flåm Railway train running through a valley, in Norway.

A contender for Europe’s best train trip, the Bergen Line ( Bergensbanen ) thunders past southern Norway’s mountains and lakes between Oslo and Bergen, reaching 1,222m at Finse station, where a snowball fight is generally on offer. The trip takes nearly seven hours, which passes quickly in a blur of incredible scenery on a comfortable intercity service. There’s scope to do a longer version of this route taking the Norway in a Nutshell tour, which includes the Flåm Railway – possibly the world’s most scenic branch line – and a boat journey through Nærøyfjord and Aurlandsfjord.

Paris to Barcelona on the slow train

The Petit Train Jaune (little yellow train), crossing the Pont Séjourné viaduct in the French Pyrenees.

These cities are linked by a fast train , but there’s a leisurely route south through France to the Pyrenees via Limoges, Toulouse and through magnificent rural and mountain scenery to Latour-de-Carol. While it’s possible to reach Latour-de-Carol by direct night train from Paris, you would miss the slowly unfolding views you can enjoy when doing this journey in daylight. From Latour-de-Carol a commuter line runs all the way to Barcelona and takes just over three hours. Possible stops along the way include fortified Ribes de Freser and Ripoll, home to an ancient monastery and a good starting point for hiking trails.

Budapest to Split on a sleeper

Old Hungarian train at Lake Balaton, in a beautiful landscape, with Tihany in the background.

During the summer there’s a tempting night service between Hungary’s capital and the Adriatic. In recent years the train has left Budapest at midnight, getting into Split after lunch. En route it passes the Hungarian holiday playground of Lake Balaton and Zagreb, Croatia’s capital. Once on the Adriatic coast, buses head south to Dubrovnik, while ferries and catamarans radiate out to nearby islands.

Locarno to Domodossola through the Swiss Alps

View of snowy peaks out the window of a restaurant near Titlis mountain, Switzerland.

Pretty much any journey in Switzerland promises jaw-dropping scenery, and on several routes trains run slowly specifically to show off the mountains, rivers and lakes that can be seen from the window. Travelling between Locarno in Switzerland to Domodossola in the Piedmont region of Italy, the Centovalli (Hundred Valleys) Railway is a short but scenic service past 52km of waterfalls, chestnut groves, church-topped villages, deep ravines and vineyards. Highlights include the Isorno Bridge near the village of Intragna and Intragna’s gorge.

These routes, plus tips on rail travel, are featured in Lonely Planet’s Guide to Train Travel in Europe by Tom Hall, Imogen Hall and Oliver Smith (£19.99), available at shop.lonelyplanet.com

One of the most scenic train journeys in Europe starts in the UK. Beginning from the former shipyards of the Clyde Estuary, the West Highland Line soon pitches you through wooded glens. Onwards it rides alongside Britain’s most extensive stretch of inland water, Loch Lomond.

The iconic Scottish highland landscape turns barren and boggy around Ardlui. The journey then unfolds into the stark wilderness and beauty of Rannoch Moor.

After passing through the Highland’s largest town, the outdoor activity hub of Fort William, get ready with your camera to snap the Glenfinnan Viaduct, made famous by the Harry Potter films. While passing over the viaduct, marvel at the breathtaking scenery of Loch Shiel and the surrounding mountains.

You’ll wind up at the end of the West Highland Line on the harbour shores of Mallaig. This picturesque seaside town is a jumping-off point to Skye and many others of the Western Isles.

On the right side of the train, you glide past the pink roofs of farmhouses and chapels in hilltop volcanic villages like Pont-d’Alleyras, before the scenery shifts back to the left side of the train at Arcons d’Allier. Built in 1892 to connect the port town of Algeciras with Cordoba, this line takes its name from its financier Sir Alexander Henderson. You’ll pass through 16 tunnels and over 20 bridges and can spy fields of sunflowers, nesting stork colonies and towering limestone peaks policed by eagles, buzzards and vultures.

Highlights include the dramatic hills and densely forested valleys just north of San Pablo on the edge of Alcornocales Natural Park, Europe’s largest cork forest.

Stop off at some of the many tempting trackside dining stops at stations along the route, or if you’re feeling spry, hike 14 kilometres down to the picturesque white hilltop village of Gaucin Pueblo.

Bulgaria certainly gives Romania a run for its money in the snail-paced train stakes, but relax – it’s not about the speed; it’s all about the views! And this narrow-gauge line is a bona fide scenic feast.

Setting out from the small ski resort of Dobrinishte (or starting further up the line at Bankso) in the shadow of the Pirin Mountains, the train first creeps beneath the snow-capped Rila Mountains.

This railway was built by Isambard Kingdom Brunel in 1855 to connect Ireland and the ferry line between Rosslare and Fishguard in Wales. The stretch between Bray and Wicklow hugs the contours of the coast so snugly that new tunnels and viaducts were repeatedly reconfigured.

The line switches from double to single track at Bray Head before looping inland through the wooded foothills of the Wicklow Mountains. It rejoins the coast at Arklow at the mouth of River Avoca, where it crosses the Nineteen Arches Bridge.

The train then powers down through the agricultural landscape of the Bann Valley and the lusher Slaney Valley before finally clattering along the quayside to Rosslare Harbour.

Europe’s Most Scenic Train Journeys

Most scenic train journeys in europe – according to us.

Most lists of great European train journeys focus on the well known classic rail journeys – think novelty steam trains and luxury dining cars. But that’s not really what we’re about at Euroventure.  Interrailing on a budget doesn’t mean you can’t take in some awesome scenery while you’re at it! Travelling by train means that you’ll never be too far away from an awesome viewpoint – but you don’t need an oak panelled luxury cabin to enjoy it! So ditch the gold plated price tag – here we’ve collected some of our favourite, most underrated and most scenic train journeys from across Europe.  Why not include some of these in your Euroventure trip – loads of them appear in our most popular routes!

Zurich – Milan

This route encompasses some of the incredible alpine scenery covered by the Glacier Express – the famous Swiss train with panoramic mountain views. The route is exceptionally beautiful throughout, but particularly the area around Zermatt where you’ll spy breathtaking views of the Matterhorn up close. If you don’t fancy paying for the upgrade to this special Glacial service, you can still take the same journey on a regular train (it just doesn’t have the glass roof) for a fraction of the price.

great rail journeys berlin

Sarajevo – Mostar

Traditionally this route has always been served by the rickety train that winds along the Neretva valley – ducking through tunnels and snaking around the glorious peaks of the surrounding national park. At the moment the train is out of service, so the journey is restricted to coach travel. Despite the slightly less romantic form of transport, the views are just as stunning as the mountain road hugs the same valley as the railway. Hopefully, the railways will be back up and running soon!

While you might not know a lot about Bosnia yet, taking this route is guaranteed to make you wish you could spend longer there. The water is as pure and clear as it comes, gleaming turquoise between craggy peaks and lush forests. It’s glorious in summer but takes on a totally different feel when Autumn comes around. Rolling mist and ochre leaves lend the Balkan landscape a mysterious beauty – one of the truly great European train journeys.

Prague – Berlin

This is one of our most frequented routes – winding right through the heart of central Europe, between two of its biggest and most visited capital cities. Between Pilma and Děčín, sitting each side of the German/Czech border, the route from Berlin to Prague passes through a region nicknamed “Bohemian Switzerland” – České Švýcarsko National Park. Following the Elbe river gorge, your train window will provide you with all the best views as it passes the mountains, emerald green forests and rock formations that make the area so popular.

great rail journeys berlin

Split – Dubrovnik – Kotor, Montenegro

Few coach journeys could be more enjoyable than the one that winds its way down the Croatian coast. Whether you do it all in one go or stop off along the way to admire the incredible medieval cities of Split and Dubrovnik, ensure you sit on the right-hand side to make the most of some of Europe’s most naturally beautiful coastlines. You’ll head inland at the border with Montenegro, but don’t worry; here’s where you begin your journey around the entire bay of Kotor. Trust us – you’ll be glad there’s no shortcut around the fjord when you get a full hour of these views.

Ljubljana – Venice

Slovenia is a country which hardly lacks in natural beauty – and its train routes are no exception. The journey from the country’s chocolate box capital to Venice may not be a speedy one at around 7 hours, but you’ll be well rewarded for your time. This route is one of the most breathtaking in Europe. You’ll start by heading up to the mountain town of Jesenice, breathing in the fresh alpine air before beginning the descent towards the Italian border. On the way, you’ll pass the Julian Alps and Lake Bled to one side, the snow-capped mountains of Triglavski National Park and Lake Bohinj to the other. Once you’re past the mountains, you’ll wind your way down the river Isonzo towards the Italian border before admiring the vineyards of Veneto on your final approach to the canals and gondolas of Venice .

Fort William – Mallaig, Scotland

It might not link up with the rest of your European rail adventures, but we couldn’t leave the West Highland line out of our list. Crossing some of Scotland’s most rural and remote landscapes, your train window will give you a whirlwind tour of the region’s Lochs and distilleries – all from the world famous Glenfiddich Viaduct (as featured on the Hogwarts Express). Why not link some of the most scenic train journeys in Scotland up with the rest of your Euroventure – just stop off at London and then take the Eurostar across to Paris . Or explore the UK by rail!

Stockholm to Abisko

If you’re more of a cold weather traveller you can’t get better than the epic rail journey up to Swedish Lapland from Stockholm . Passing through almost 900 miles of bleakly beautiful plains, the pine trees are slowly buried under a layer of soft snow as you speed further and further north. You’ll travel overnight in cozy sleeper compartments – magical! Plus, with nearly 24 hours of darkness a day in the Arctic winter, you might even be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the northern lights from your window.

Poprad to Zakopone

You might not have heard of these two little border towns, but they sit astride some of the most spectacular mountains in Eastern Europe. The route from Poprad to Zakopone is actually by coach since the High Tatras sit on the border between Slovakia and Poland. Putting up with the winding roads will serve you well though – catch a glimpse of this gorgeous snow-capped mountain range through the dense forests and it’ll make it all worthwhile.

Cinque Terre

Going back to Italy, here’s one journey everyone’s heard of already; the Cinque Terre – or 5 Lands. Situated in the North Western coast of Italy, this National Park includes 5 rainbow-coloured towns which cling precariously to the Mediterranean cliffs, as well as the rolling Tuscan countryside which connects them. Take a day trip out from Florence or Pisa and admire the views from the tiny local train service that runs between La Spezia and Monterosso Al Mare.

Innsbruck to Zurich

Last but not least, we have another great Alpine gem – this time from Austria to Switzerland. Tracing the valley all the way through across the border, on a clear day you’ll get spectacular views of the towering alps on either side of your train. Summer gives you clear glacial pools, rocky craggs and glorious green meadows, while your winter outlook is more likely to be a smooth white blanket of snow and plenty of skiers! Either way, you’ll be assured of a stunning journey – and thanks to the all-weather Austrian efficiency you’ll be punctual to boot.

We could go on and on… But these are just a few of our favourite, most scenic train journeys to take in Europe.

In a continent with such a vast variety of climates, landscapes and cultures in such a small space it would be criminal not to admire the view as you travel – and what better way to do so than to make use of Europe’s awesome rail network. The Bernina Express holds a special place in the hearts of both locals and tourists and is dubbed “the rail experts’ best-kept secret”. On track for a new iconic Swiss rail journey

It’s safe to say that Switzerland isn’t short of iconic rail journeys – however, there’s a new kid on the block in the form of the GoldenPass Express. A hundred years in the planning, this amazing new route travels through the gorgeous Swiss Highlands from the glamorous lakeside resort of Montreux to the alpine town of Interlaken.

We travelled on the Interlaken & Jungfrau Express Tour. The tour was well managed with our excellent guide Ros. Nothing was too much trouble.

First time we've gone with grj (traditional glacier express). the experience was totally positive - great locations and hotels and our tour guide was brilliant., the glacier express holiday itself was nothing short of outstanding. the planned itinerary was tremendous. i recommend this grj holiday to anyone., well organised and clearly the company had put a lot of detailed planning into the tour. certainly would recommend the glacier express tour., the pinnacle of perfection.

I am thinking of going to Russia with Great Train Journeys Company next year does anyone have any knowledge and advice please?

' class=

I've not had any contact with that company but my husband and I did the journey from Vladivostok to St Petersburg by ourselves and saved a heck of a lot of money compared to what travel agencies over here were charging. We did it back in June this year. The whole trip is written up here if you want to see how we organized it: http://www.railway-train-travel.com.au Click on the Trans Siberian link (near the top) when you get there.

Thank you for your interesting post, very much appreciated. We crossed America by train if you would be interested in that.

Are you able to p.m. me with a brief outline of where you went and how much it cost you please? At some stagte we have to start planning another train trip. We don't know where we want to go yet.

Thanks in advance

We went with Great Train Journeys from coast to coast and thoroughly recommend it the guiides were wonderful and it was a great experience. You can look up current costs.
