Disclosure (being transparent and honest should be fun): You know the way I run this blog. I only recommend products, experiences, hotels, etc. that I personally tried and actually own and use. And some that I am positive will be helpful for you. On this site, you will see pretty colorful links which are known as ”affiliate links”. If you click on this link and buy something you like, I’ll earn some money. I’m talking huge bucks here, like a new Tesla, yacht, and 7-bedroom mansion. Ok, honestly, most of the time it will be enough to help me buy treats for my dog and parrot, eco-friendly travel products or to help me build the time machine, and travel back in time to see the dinosaurs, do an interview of stone crafters on Easter island and have a serious chat with masterminds who ‘invented’ Maths. Breakdown of Dubai 5 day trip itinerary

This is a relaxed itinerary for Dubai. Perfect for someone who wants to have a nice and steady pace of sightseeing, relaxing, adventuring, and exploring. This Dubai trip itinerary offers a nice combination of active days, half-day trips, and enough time to relax. There will be plenty of time to do fun activities in Dubai mall, visit Dubai’s Souks, and maybe go skiing or on a jet ski. There will be enough time to experience Arabian hospitality, have a fabulous meal in a restaurant and still have time to unwind and relax. For your first visit to Dubai, I would recommend spending at least 3 days in Dubai. But 5 days is just enough to see all the major bucket list items and add an extra relaxing day or a day trip to Abu Dhabi . If you wish, you can break nights into two parts. You can stay 2 or 3 nights in Dubai Marina and 2 or 3 nights in Downtown Dubai. I was thinking about this but decided not to do it. Purely because I didn’t want to be bothered with packing, checking out, checking in, and moving. I rather spent that time exploring.   SHORT DUBAI ITINERARY OVERVIEW: Day 1: Dubai Marina, Jumeirah Beach, Pool & Beach day Day 2: Dubai Mall, Dubai Aquarium, Burj Khalifa, and Dubai fountain show Day 3: Palm Jumeirah, Burj Al Arab, Emirates Mall, Dubai Desert Safari Day 4: Old Dubai, Souks of Deira, abra boat ride, and Dubai Frame Day 5: Day trip to Abu Dhabi, pool/beach day, Miracle Garden, Museum of the future

Best time to visit Dubai

Dubai in the United Arab Emirates is one of the destinations, that can be visited throughout the year. Spring or Fall, Autumn or Winter, Dubai is always waiting for you. Having a hot desert climate, there are only really two distinct seasons. Summer and Dubai winter. Generally speaking, the best time to visit Dubai is during Winter. In the months from November to April. Temperatures in these months are warm and pleasant. They are comfortable enough to be outside and explore the city. As a result, airline tickets are higher, and you can also expect higher prices on accommodation. Plus, more people at the attractions. On the flip side, the time from April through October is when Dubai has fewer tourists. Time of Dubai’s summer is considered low season. In those months temperatures can reach up to 40°C (104°F). High temperatures mean fewer visitors, less crowds, cheaper flight fares, and accommodation rates. I visited Dubai in August, but because of all the air conditioning in hotels, shopping malls, and public transport, it didn’t feel that hot and I didn’t mind spending time outside.

How to get to Dubai

The very best way to get to Dubai is by air. The second best way to visit is by going on a cruise and visiting Dubai on a route combined with other Middle Eastern cities. Dubai Airport is the biggest airport in UAE and one of the biggest in the world. It is home to their carrier airline Emirates. Dubai International Airport is around 10 km (6 mi) away from dubai Downtown. You can easily travel to Downtown dubai using a taxi, Uber, or Metro. If you land at Terminal 1 or Terminal 3, the best way is to use the Red Metro line. It will take you to Burj Khalifa (Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall metro station). This is also great if you are only having a short stopover in Dubai.

Things to know before visiting Dubai

  • DUBAI VISA If you need a visa or not depends on what passport you are holding. Most countries are eligible for a free visa on arrival. You can get a Tourist visa or a Transit/Stopover visa on arrival. However, some nationalities and for other visas, you may need to apply before your arrival in Dubai. Find your nationality and learn about your Dubai visa requirements here .
  • PASSPORT Your passport needs to be valid for at least 6 more months and have 1 blank passport page.
  • TRAVEL INSURANCE Make sure to purchase travel insurance before your travel. I have seen two people needing medical assistance in Zanzibar. One was because of heat stroke. Another sprained her ankle. Seriously, you never know, so better be safe than sorry.
  • SAFETY TIPS Dubai is safe, even for solo female travelers, but it still doesn’t hurt to use common sense. Don’t flesh your valuables, dress accordingly, take a back seat when taking a taxi or an Uber. Be careful when walking alone in the dark, respect their culture and dress code.
  • DRESS CODE Majority of the population is Muslim. Even though the city is ‘westernized’ respect their culture and dress appropriately. This is especially true when visiting old parts of Dubai, like Deira and souks, and when visiting a mosque. Wearing a bikini ina hotel and a resort is perfectly fine.

Five days in Dubai itinerary

Day 1: dubai marina, jumeirah beach, pool & beach day.

First day in Dubai. If you are coming from the United States or Canada or from Japan or Australia, this is likely going to be a hectic day to spend with the company of jet lag. If you are coming from Europe, the journey to Dubai should not be that bad, since Zanzibar is in GMT+4 time zone.

This is will be an easy day. After the formalities, head to Dubai Marina. If temperatures are not too high, go on The Walk and down to Jumeriah Beach. Depending on where you are staying there are plenty of hotels within walking distance of the beach. At Jumeriah Beach you can, rent a sun lounge bed and relax on the beach. Grab something to eat so have a coffee. This is a perfect place to see the highest Ferry wheel Ain Dubai. If wish, go to the Bluewaters to ride 210m high Ain Dubai or Dubai Eye. If you are more into water activities, have some AquaFun in an inflatable park in the sea. After a small taste of Dubai Marina, go to the One&Only Royal Mirage. You can do that by public transport, taxi, or Uber. Spend a nice day relaxing and recharging batteries in one of Dubai’s finest resorts. Their private kilometer-long beach, Arabian hospitality and calming atmosphere will get you ready and excited to see what else Dubai has to offer.

If your daycation completely filled up your batteries, have a look at what is happening in Dubai at nighttime. Is there any Ladies’ night going on? Maybe a special Happy Hour promo. Check online or ask at your accommodation. If you are still feeling tired and jet-lagged, have a nice shower and get a good night’s sleep. Where to stay in Dubai, UAE: • Rove Downtown is a modern, simple, sustainable-oriented hotel created for travelers. No matter where you come from, you will feel at home. DAY 2:  Dubai Mall, Dubai Aquarium, Burj Khalifa, and Dubai fountain show

After a more relaxed first day, this will be your first sightseeing day in Dubai. If you only have a couple of days in Dubai, you can skip the stress-free day 1 and start with this. This daily itinerary is also perfect for someone having a short stopover in Dubai. This day you are going to see the highlights of Dubai.

First main sight you are going to visit will be Dubai Mall. Dubai Mall is the second biggest shopping mall in the world. This is heaven for shopaholics. But even if you are not a fan of shopping centers, trust me, there is a lot to do. The mall is home to Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo , a cinema, an ice rink, a haunted park, a dinosaur skeleton, a stunning waterfall … besides a gazillion of shops where you can find any brand you like. At the info points, there are maps, so you can navigate in case you get lost. But at those counters, you can also get a portable phone charger, that you can borrow for free while you shop.

After you are tired from shopping, go and visit Burj Khalifa. With its 828m (2,723 ft) it is the tallest building in the world and actually holds more than 7 Guinness World records. To get to the Burj Khalifa entrance you will need to walk through the mall. The Burj Khalifa is right next to Dubai Mall. Look for the signs in the lower levels for directions.  You can go up to the 124 and 125th floor or all the way up to level 148 , or even to level 154 . Book your ticket in advance. This will save you a spot at the time you will want to visit and (in many cases get you a deal) and you will skip waiting in line for the ticket. At level 148 you can stay up to 30 minutes. At levels 125/124 you can stay as long as you like. If you decide to go in the afternoon, you can admire the Dubai fountain show from above. Don’t forget to bring your passport or ID.

When you have soaked in the views from above, head back to Dubai Mall. Now it is time to see the amazing choreographed water show.  The fountain show starts at 6 pm and performs a show every 30 minutes until 11 pm. This show is just outside Dubai Mall at Burj Khalifa Lake. Get one of the standing spots, or have a nice dinner in one of the restaurants next to the lake. You can even watch the show from a boat on the water. You can purchase a ticket here .

DAY 3: Palm Jumeirah, Burj Al Arab, Emirates Mall, Dubai Desert Safari

Start your day going to the famous Palm-shaped island, Palm Dubai. Drive or walk from one part to the other on 11 km (7 mi) long Boardwalk and stop at the famous Atlantis The Palm hotel. To have a unique view over the Palm and Dubai skyline, go to AURA Skypool and have a swim in the world’s tallest infinity pool (fee). For an even more exclusive look, book a 15min helicopter ride and see the Palm from the air.

After getting in a bit of sun, pay a visit to the Mall of Emirates. Here have a bite at Apres. It will give you something for the tastebuds while looking the famous indoor ski resort Ski Dubai . To include even more adventure in your day, book a skiing session. They provide skis and clothing.

On you way back stop at the Jumeriah Beach hotel, or go to the entrance of the Wadi Wadi waterpark, to get a perfect up-close, shot of the Burj Al Arab. For an exclusive view from the water, book one of the Dubai jet ski tours .

Ski dubai, Atlantis the palm hotel and Burj Al Arab

In the afternoon get ready for a Dubai desert safari tour . Tour will include driving through the red sand dunes, camel rides, and watching sunset over the Lahbab Desert. You can opt in for a quad bike ride. At the end, there will be a delicious bbq dinner in a Al Khayma desert camp. I highly recommend this tour! Bring layers. The evenings in the desert can get cold.

Do you want to travel like me? Here are some of my favorite travel tips and resources; FLIGHTS: I use Google Flights or Skyscanner to find the best flight deals. The destination everywhere feature is perfect to find some cheap deals! ACCOMMODATION: Booking.com is my favorite site for finding great hotel deals. TOURS & ACTIVITIES: I like to wander around on my own, but when I want to explore with a group I book a tour with GetYourGuide .

Alongside  Perfume Souk and Textile souk, here you will also find traditional textiles, lamps, rugs and other souvenirs.

DAY 5: Day trip to Abu Dhabi, pool/beach day, Miracle Garden, Museum of the future

What to do on day five is up to you and there are a lot of options to choose from. You can go on a day trip to Abu Dhabi and see all the Abu Dhabi highlights. Abu Dhabi is the capital of the United Arab Emirates and also home of Sheikh Zayed Mosque, the largest mosque in UAE. Mosque’s famous white exterior, design, and Swarovski chandeliers make it one of a kind. If you are visiting Dubai from November to March, and are a fan of nature and gardens, then you should visit Miracle garden . This is the world’s largest natural flower garden, a floral oasis you need to visit , with a variety of flower species shaped in various forms, and objects that also come in different shapes and sizes. This is a perfect ticket if you deceit to visit it at the last minute.

Sheikh Zayed Mosque, Abu Dhabi, UAE

To spend the day inside, in a nice and airconditioned environment, you could visit Museum of the future. The museum visit usually last around 2h but the tickets get sold out fast. So book your ticket in advance. When I was in Dubai, it wasn’t opened yet. Maybe you want to spend a more relaxed last day? In that case, you can do a little bit of shopping and spend the rest of the day by the pool. Great thing is that daycation is a really common thing, so just pick a hotel and enjoy their pool. Before your flight, make sure to have lunch at the Rooftop dining restaurant and Skybar, Ce la vi. You will have a prime dining experience, an amazing view of the Address hotel infinity pool and Burj Khalifa. All paired with delicious food that will connect all the pieces together of your wonderful Dubai experience.

This Dubai itinerary is perfect for a first-time visitor to this Emirati city. It offers an amazing combination of beaches, sightseeing, shopping, and history. You will have enough time to relax and explore what the City of Gold has to offer.  5 days in Dubai will be plenty of time for you to experience the vibe of different parts of Dubai. The vibe in Dubai Marina, Downtown Dubai and Deira are definitely not the same. As you will experience for yourself. I am positive you will be amazed how different they are and pick your favorite.

This Dubai itinerary gives you enough time to relax, visit Dubai Mall with its Aquarium and Ice skating ring, go to the top of Burj Khalifa, and see the difference between the Old and New Dubai from Dubai Frame. In terms of alternations: You can do as much or as little in Dubai. Literally, even the sky is not the limit. You can mix and match days as you please and as it fits your flight schedule. You can just relax and do a lot of daycations in various pools, visit aquaparks or ski, surf, jetski and go on a helicopter ride in a day. You can even go diving and rent a luxury sports car. Seriously, no limits here.

If you don’t have 5 days to spare in Dubai and are wondering how many days in Dubai is enough? I would say, to have at least 3. You can see all the major sites in a day or on a stopover. But to see the top tourist attractions, try for at least 3. Regardless of how many days in Dubai you have planned, make sure that you savor every moment watching skyscrapers, getting your eyes on Burj Khalifa, enjoying in Arabian sun, exploring the vastness of the desert, and appreciating the adventures in the city on the coast of Persian Gulf.

I am planning to visit Dubai in the month of February and wanted to spend 5-6 days there. This sounds like a perfect itinerary for a relaxing holiday. No rush. Thank you for sharing.

Wow, this sounds amazing! Happy for you and a bit jealous 😉 You will have an extra day so you can pick two options for day 5 in this itinerary!

Perfect timing. I’m hoping to visit Dubai in 2023. Is 5 days long enough?

I think five days really is the perfect number of days to see the city without getting too overwhelmed by its sparkle! 🙂

Completely agree! And you leave with that feeling when is it just right and you want to return again, for the second and third time.

That human waterfall wall is one of the most creative things I’ve ever seen! I applaud you for braving temperatures over 100 to have your Dubai adventure!

Actually, the heat, even if it was 40°C (104°F) was not that bad. It is not humid so it is dry heat, which is easier to ‘manage’.

7-Days in Dubai: Classic One Week Dubai Itinerary

What can you do in dubai in one week [+ more ideas if you have longer].

Dubai is a dazzling and eclectic city sitting on the azure waters of the Persian Gulf on the Arabian Peninsula.

Known for its steamy hot summers and incredible modern skyline to its vast plains of rolling desert dunes, is it possible to fit in everything this mega city has to offer into just 7 days in Dubai?

It’s tough, but we’re certainly willing to try!

We’ve set out for you below a fairly well-paced one-week plan that takes into account all the different aspects of Dubai, from the modern skyscrapers and architectural feats to more traditional parts of the city, shopping opportunities, desert tours and of course, ways to simply relax and soak up the year-round sunshine.

Things to Know Before Visiting Dubai

Transport in dubai for one week, day 1 – 7 day dubai itinerary: relax into dubai, day 2 – 7 day dubai itinerary: old meets new, day 3 – 7 day dubai itinerary: modern dubai, day 4 – 7 day dubai itinerary: beach & desert, day 5 – 7 day dubai itinerary: abu dhabi day trip, day 6 – 7 day dubai itinerary: dubai theme park day, day 7 – 7 day dubai itinerary: splurge on something unique, additional activities for your dubai itinerary, frequently asked questions about dubai itineraries.

This is a super detailed Dubai itinerary for 7 days, so do bookmark this page for later in your browser or save it to Pinterest

dubai relax travel

Before we dive into the juicy details of WHAT TO DO, make sure you’ve checked out our essential planning information too. We cover in much greater detail:

  • Things to know before planning a visit to Dubai – Visas, laws, customs & religious aspects to be aware of.
  • What to pack for Dubai – dress code advice and a comprehensive packing list for Dubai can be found here.
  • The best places to stay in Dubai – let’s talk budget and location in more detail over here.
  • Dubai dining guides – all our favourite places to eat, dining specialities, bars and special occasions.
  • Best time to visit Dubai – don’t be caught out by the weather or religious events; here are the ideal times of year to visit Dubai.
  • Take out travel insurance! We are in an ever-changing world at present; whilst Dubai remains open for business, don’t get caught short; make sure your trip is comprehensively insured.

Over the course of one week in Dubai using this itinerary, you will need to take a combination of taxis, the Metro and private tours.

We’ve given basic directions on the best way to get to each place by public transport, if possible, or where you may need a taxi to get door-to-door with ease. You can find our complete guide to Dubai Transport options here .

Metro: If you stay in Dubai for one week and want to use the Metro lines, it is recommended to get a Silver Nol and top it up with a 7-Day Pass (The card costs 25 AED with 19 AED in credit, then a regular weekly Metro pass is 110 AED). We explain all the fares in more detail here.

A note on taxis: In the hottest part of the year (i.e. about May to October!), be wary of how far you can walk during the day. Places may look relatively close and within walking distance on a map, but under the heat of the sun, a short taxi/Uber ride may very much be worth it (noting a minimum fare applies of 12 AED for taxis).

Hiring a car: Unless you are a super-confident driver or plan on taking several trips out of the city, you are best relying on taxis and tours for your out-of-town trips during a one-week stay in Dubai. You can learn more about self-driving in Dubai here, or if you’re still interested in renting a car in Dubai , check out how much it costs here:

What Can I Fit Into A Dubai Itinerary 7 Days?

With only 7 days in Dubai, you need to be careful with your time management and no doubt book a few activities in advance, especially if you’re visiting at peak tourism times.

When planning out your days, note that the weekend in Dubai is now Friday afternoon through Sunday (2.5-day weekends); these days are MUCH busier with local residents also out and about, especially Friday afternoons after prayer time .

We set out for you here a balanced itinerary for seeing everything that Dubai has to offer, but also included below is a table of additional activities that you can mix and match to your tastes.

For a comprehensive list of everything there is to see and do in Dubai, pop over here – we have 150+ ideas!.

Relax, unwind and get to know one of Dubai’s modern beachfront districts.

Whether you are staying in one of Dubai’s luxury beachfront hotels or not, with 7 days, there’s no need to rush into sightseeing day 1. Many hotels include their own amazing resort facilities, or head out to explore one of these beachfront areas on foot:

JBR, Bluewaters, Dubai Marina

A lot of first-timers find the area of JBR and Dubai Marina a great place to start. Familiarise yourself with The Walk & The Beach – catch those rays and shake off the jet lag.

If you’d like to stretch your legs further, take a walk over to the ultra-modern man-made island, Bluewaters Island , to dine and marvel at the Dubai skyline along Jumeirah Beach and perhaps add in a flight on Ain Dubai , the largest observation wheel in the world for spectacular city views [NB still “temporarily” closed in 2024].

dubai relax travel

You can easily spend a whole day in the JBR area between activities along the beach (inflatable water parks, splash pads, jet ski and flyboarding, Flying Cup sky-high dining – read more here! ) and onward for dinner in the Dubai Marina area or catch a dinner cruise .

Getting there: Jumeirah Beach Residence/Dubai Marina is the perfect place to stay for one week due to the high number of spacious hotel apartments, or by Metro take Red Line to DAMAC Properties or DMCC Metro Station

Lar Mer (Closed – To be replaced by J1 Beach in 2024)

Another ultra-modern beachfront area of the city to consider for easing into your first day in Dubai is La Mer. An eclectic mix of palm-tree-lined walkways, retail, dining & play opportunities. There’s even a mini water park here. As pretty at night as it is by day La Mer is a trendy new addition for families and singles alike to enjoy Dubai’s modern vibes.

Colourful La Mer Beach Huts in Dubai

If you don’t want to spend the whole day simply at the beach, La Mer sees you close to both the Jumeirah Mosque – the largest mosque in Dubai open to the public for daily tours – and Etihad Museum , telling the story of the country’s unification in 1971.

Getting there: No direct Metro stop (nearest is Financial Centre then a 10-minute taxi), or take bus 8, 9 or 88 along Jumeirah Beach Road

Rest up now, as we’ve now got some pretty busy, action-packed days ahead!

Step back into the Dubai of the past, from Bedouin roots to bustling Dubai Creek .

Your first day of real sightseeing needs to go back to the grassroots of what Dubai city is about; a busy trading port city based around Dubai Creek.

Get your bearings at Dubai Frame

Let’s start your exploration of Dubai by taking in the views from the Dubai Frame . Pretty much what it says – it’s a giant picture frame! One of the first tourist highlights you will capture coming from Dubai International Airport into the city.

The Dubai Frame with Palm Trees - Dubai Landmark attraction

You ascend up one side of the 150m high frame (48 floors) and then walk across the top. The see-through floored sky deck gives you fabulous views of Old Dubai, Dubai Creek to Sharjah and beyond in one direction, and the modern skyscrapers of Downtown Dubai in the other.

Learn more about visiting the Dubai Frame here | Buy tickets with PlatinumList

Getting there: Nearest Metro is Al Jafiliya for Zabeel Park but it’s a decent walk, you may prefer a taxi/Uber drop off

Wander Al Fahidi Historical Neighborhood

This is the oldest part of Dubai city , a labyrinth of narrow laneways that date back to the 19th century. The area of Bur Dubai is protected so that the city’s heritage does not become lost forever under the sprawling skyscrapers. Most of the traditional sandy-coloured low-rise buildings are now galleries, museums and small cafes.

Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood

Within this area, you will find the Dubai Museum, housed within the Al Faihi Fort, which dates back to 1787. At only 3 AED you should definitely pop your head in for more insight into the country’s Bedouin past and the pre-oil era of Dubai. {CLOSED FOR RENOVATIONS SINCE 2020 – NO INDICATION OF REOPEN DATE YET}

There are many other Dubai museums to be discovered within the laneways; the Coffee Museum (entry fee 10 AED) is one of our favourites worth seeking out.

Getting there: Al Fahidi Bus Station or Al Fahidi Metro station

Lunch at Al Seef Waterfront

By now, you have most certainly worked up an appetite, so if you’ve not stopped for lunch in XVA Cafe or Arabian Tea House situated within Al Faihidi Historical Neighbourhood, now would be time to head to one of many restaurants in this waterfront development. Seamlessly blending old with new it’s directly across the street, next to the Al Faihidi Marine Transport Station.

Al Seef is set up like a traditional souk so you’ll be able to do your shopping here too. Kids may enjoy popping into the Museum of Illusions or having some fun with photos in the instagrammable laneways.

Colourful Shops in Al Seef Dubai

Cross Dubai Creek on an Abra

An absolute must for an authentic old Dubai experience! Whilst there are far more modern methods these days of crossing the city, a traditional abra from Bur Dubai to Deira at 1 AED per person is still a steal!

Dubai Creek at sunset with abras

Explore the Traditional Deira Souks

Depending on the heat, you could spend several hours lost in the laneways of Deira, the most popular stops being the Gold Souk and the Spice Souk . It’s all open-air, so it can be heavy going and a bit of walking mid-afternoon in the hotter months.

You’ll find a few more museums in this area of the city, too, Naif Museum and Museum of the Poet Al Oqaili are worth seeking out for history lovers .

If you need to escape to airconditioning at this point, Al Ghurair Centre in Deira offers an indoor shopping option – a more modern mall you can still pick up cheap(er) clothing and electronics here before starting your evening exploration.

Take a food tour in Old Dubai

For the evening, it’s time to take in some local cuisines. Being the multicultural city that Dubai is, you can be sure many dishes are vying for attention as “local” cuisine, in addition to traditional Emirati or Bedouin-style dishes.

One of the most highly recommended food tours in Dubai is Frying Pan Adventures , who offer various options for small groups to have authentic experiences in the streets of Dubai. Or try this highly commended small group culture and food tour . Most guided tours start and end in Deira.

A boat cruise on Dubai Creek

If you didn’t head out on the water night one in Dubai Marina , try it on night two. Nightly dinner cruises on Dubai Creek will allow you to take on a new perspective of just how busy and bustling Dubai still is as a busy seaport.

An alternative is to hire a guide for Day 2 , you will get informative commentary along the way as well as help with transportation.

TIP: Whilst the dress code in Dubai is quite loose around the beach, heading to the older parts of town it’s definitely advisable and polite to cover up more – we talk more about what’s appropriate when here.

Explore around Downtown Dubai, from towering heights to mighty fountains and everything in between .

In complete contrast to Day 2, let’s take you over to the glimmering skyscrapers of Downtown Dubai and the ultra-modern side of the city.

Often touted as the biggest shopping mall in the world (though technically it’s not! ), there are a plethora of indoor experiences to have just inside Dubai Mall, other than shopping! Especially if you’re visiting in the summer, it’s easy to spend two days just exploring everything this mega mall has to offer.

Let’s be realistic, though and assume with half a day; you can explore one of:

  • The Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo
  • Play DXB (formerly VR Park)

There are plenty more things to see and do indoors and some just outside and on the roof – see the full list of Dubai Mall attractions here .

Getting there: Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall Station on the Red Line Metro, then there’s an air-conditioned travellator connecting you to the entire surrounding area of Downtown

Scale the Burj Khalifa

It would be hard to set out a Dubai itinerary and not include THE most iconic building in the city – the world’s tallest building in the world, no less! Yes, you can travel to the observation deck of the building on the 124th and 125h floors ( extra packages take you to the 148th floor!), or even dine at At.mosphere restaurant and lounge on Level 122.

If you’re unsure what experience might suit you, head over to our complete visitor’s guide to visiting the Burj Khalifa , where we set out all your visiting options – no outside climbing permitted, Mission Impossible-style!

If there’s one part of your Dubai itinerary you simply must book in advance ; it’s the Burj Khalifa. Tickets at the door are extortionately more expensive and can sell out. Do allow a good 2 hours for queuing and having a good look around. Note sunset and sunrise slots (weekends only) cost more.

Lady looking out of the window at Burj Khalifa observation deck

Souk Al Bahar

Another spot to explore nearby is Souk Al Bahar . Accessed over a pedestrian bridge from Dubai Mall, this modern market is made in the design of a traditional souk offering handicrafts through to fine dining and spectacular views over Burj Lake.

You can find a good selection of places to grab a drink and bite around downtown Dubai here .

Sky Views Dubai

A brand new alternative to scaling the Burj is to try Sky View Dubai . This sensational new experience is not for the fainthearted as you take a glass elevator to the 52nd floor of Sky Views Observatory above Downtown. Walk the 46m glass-floored walkway between two towers, then take a transparent slide-ride over the city!

The super brave may even want to take on Edge Walk for a hands-free leap of faith! Scale your way around the outside of the Address Sky View Hotel . Although not as high as the Burj Khalifa, we’d argue Sky View offers a more unique view of the city.

Evening in Downtown Dubai

There are several ways to continue enjoying Downtown Dubai well into the evening, its the hub of Dubai nightlife alongside JBR/Dubai Marina.

The Dubai Fountain show is one of the most popular free things to do in Dubai . Starting from 6:00 PM nightly, then every half hour, watch the fabulously choreographed light and sound show on Burj Lake, sitting at the foot of Burj Khalifa. Later in the evening, the Burj Khalifa also lights up for half-hourly shows.

dubai relax travel

For a close-up view of the fountain show, you can take an abra ride on the lake . Alternatively, our favourite is to pick out one of the restaurants with uninterrupted views in either Dubai Mall or Souk Al Bahar and dine whilst getting to see the show a few times over without the crowds.

If your trip happens to align with something you enjoy at Dubai Opera , this is another sensational Downtown Dubai experience to get glammed up for.

If concrete and modern Dubai is really not you, then head to the listing below of the best cultural activities to continue on a few more activities we couldn’t squeeze in Day 2. A day trip to the Heart of Sharjah may be preferable.

A day for sand and surf – dune surfing, that is!

One thing Dubai definitely does well, and in copious quantities, is sand!! So why not dedicate Day 4 to our two favourite Dubai activities, hitting the beach and hitting the desert?

If you’re not staying at a resort hotel, pick out one of Dubai’s popular beach clubs and enjoy the rays for a few hours with the comfort of a sunbed and table service. For more extreme adventures, you could add in a jet ski tour, or if you’ve not hit the waters yet, a boat cruise to see the unique Dubai skyline.

Dubai also has plenty of public beaches , some are completely free, and others have a small Dubai municipality charge but great facilities. Local favourites include Al Mamzar Park and Kite Beach has slightly bigger waves than others, or head to Sunset Beach for iconic views of the Burj Al Arab , the world’s most luxurious hotel.

Shopping alternative

If it’s getting hot out or you’d prefer a little retail therapy, spend the morning at Souk Madinat Jumeirah . Similar to Souk Al Bahar in Downtown, this is a modern souk (market) built in traditional style, with indoor and outdoor (seasonal) stalls and shops offering tourist tat to genuine souvenirs and a superb range of eateries.

Again, you can get some brilliant Burj Al Arab views here and even take an abra out on the waterways around the extravagant Jumeirah hotels (a bit more pricey than the 1 AED on Dubai Creek but an amazing backdrop!).

View of Burj Al Arab from Souk Madinat

Getting there: Souk Madinat Jumeirah is not on the Metro, but you can get to the Mall of the Emirates and a short taxi from there, or stop at Internet City and then hop on Bus 88.

In the afternoon, get set for the Dubai desert. There are numerous tour operators who have camps set up in the dunes just outside of the city, as well as a select few operators in the protected Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve .

A typical desert safari trip in Dubai will include city pickups; then you’ll travel by 4×4 into the dunes, doing some dune bashing along the way before an offering of sand sports – pick from quad bikes, fat bikes , sandboarding, camel rides, henna painting, shisha then join a communal BBQ dinner.

Alternatively, if you are more interested in seeing the desert wildlife than the sand sports, opt for premium options offered by Platinum Heritage , a little more pricey but for smaller groups, a more genuine desert experience.

Getting there: No need to worry about your 4×4 skills, tour operators will pick you up from your hotel or a convenient city location

You can do day 4 in reverse too; If you take an early morning desert safari you can get out and beat the heat, then spend your afternoon and evening enjoying shopping, wandering the souk or a beach club afternoon with sundowners to finish.

If you are visiting in the peak of summer , you would likely need to scratch this outdoor day and replace it with some further activities from our indoor guide to Dubai eg, Ski Dubai or Green Planet

No trip to the UAE is complete without seeing the Capital, Abu Dhabi.

The most iconic of buildings to visit in Abu Dhabi is the simply stunning Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque .

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

Whilst it is possible to squeeze in a trip to the Grand Mosque only on a half-day trip to Abu Dhabi – it’s less than 90 minutes on a tour coach Dubai to Abu Dhabi – you’d be doing yourself an injustice not to see more of the city.

Getting there: If you want to move at your own pace, then definitely hire a car for your Abu Dhabi day trip , but catching a tour is the easiest option – the big price differential is whether you join a shared tourist coach or take a private tour

We have more details here on the spectacular places in Abu Dhabi you can squeeze in on a one-day trip from Dubai – including the Louvre Museum and Qasr al Watan , the Presidential Palace (there’s even a free bus for these two top attractions!)

A longer itinerary would see at least 2 to 3 days spent in Abu Dhabi to capture the highlights of the capital properly.

If you are a theme park junkie, you may want to even stay overnight and enjoy Day 6 at the Yas Island theme parks , just as good (if not better!) than their Dubai counterparts – Yas Waterworld, Warner Bros World Abu Dhabi & Ferrari World.

Abu Dhabi is but one of the other 7 Emirates of the United Arab Emirates (albeit by far the largest in size and the richest in oil!). Dubai is quite central in the country, so it is a great base for exploring the rest of the Emirates. We have more ideas listed below for alternative or additional day trips from Dubai .

Where to stay in Abu Dhabi? For the Yas Island theme parks, definitely overnight in the brand new Hilton Yas Island . For views of the Grand Mosque, The Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi or Fairmont Bab Al Bahr on the Grand Canal are good choices closer to Dubai end of town.

Those staying longer in Abu Dhabi, pop on over to our Abu Dhabi Travel Planner website .

Thrill-seekers and adrenaline junkies will never be left disappointed in Dubai .

Now if you have littles travelling with you (or big kids at heart!), you may well need to move theme park day further up the itinerary or dedicate two full days.

There’s a superb selection of world-class theme parks to choose from in Dubai . If you’re visiting in the beautiful shoulder seasons (approximately March to May and October to November), our top pick would be one of the mega water parks – choose from Atlantis Aquaventure or Wild Wadi at Jumeirah .

(NB, if you stay at Atlantis the Palm or any of the Jumeirah hotels , your water park entry will be included!)

dubai relax travel

Over the cooler winter months of the year (December to February), Dubai Parks & Resorts is our top choice. Here you can choose between four connected theme parks (ideally, you can fit in two of these in a day – three at a squeeze):

  • Legoland Dubai
  • Legoland Dubai Water Park
  • Bollywood Parks (Now closed but touted it will be replaced with Real Madrid World – a football theme park)

And if it’s the peak of summer, the top pick goes to IMG Worlds of Adventure – think Marvel characters to Cartoon Network-themed rides and activities. IMG is entirely indoors to beat the heat.

If theme parks really aren’t your thing, we strongly suggest checking our alternate suggestions for day trips & cultural activities you could add on below.

Getting there: The Theme Parks in Dubai are all quite spread out, Atlantis Aquaventure is on the outer crescent of Palm Jumeirah and Wild Wadi is close to Souk Madinat Jumeirah. Dubai Parks & Resorts is in Jebel Ali, beyond the end of the Metro and IMG Worlds of Adventure sits south of the city. In a group, it’s worth getting a taxi for this day

On your last day, it’s time to tick off anything you’re yet to see and do from our ideas above and engage in something uniquely Dubai.

Some top suggestions for “only in Dubai” experiences include:

  • Enjoy a sunrise balloon ride over the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve
  • Try afternoon tea at the “7-star” Burj Al Arab
  • Skydive over Palm Jumeirah
  • Zipline across Dubai Marina
  • Helicopter journey over the city
  • Dine in the world’s highest restaurant

If you’ve not had the opportunity yet, find one of Dubai’s dramatic rooftop bars (seasonal) to finish off your incredible week in Dubai with dramatic views over the city skyline or the Arabian Gulf.

Rooftop view from the top of Raffles Dubai Tomo restaurant

There was only so much we could fit in an initial 7-day itinerary!

If some of the above activities do not appeal, were out of your budget, or perhaps you’d like to add some additional days to make it a 10-day or two-week itinerary, here’s what you could look to add:

Additional family activities

  • Admire the floral wonders at Dubai Miracle Garden (seasonal)
  • Be enchanted by Dubai Garden Glow & Dinosaur Park (seasonal)
  • Meet the animals at Dubai Safari Park
  • Spend an evening at Global Village
  • Zipline through the Ghaf forest at Aventura Parks
  • Catch the nightly Imagine water show at Festival City or the fountain show at The Pointe
  • Go bird spotting at Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary

See our complete guide to Dubai activities for kids here

Additional cultural activities

  • More for museum and culture lovers, we highly recommend a day spent in the neighbouring emirate Sharjah
  • Explore the Al Shindagha district , the heritage village and Saeed Al Maktoum House
  • Spend half a day with the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding – cultural walks, meals and tours
  • Visit the oasis city of Al Ain, with the UAE’s UNESCO World Heritage-listed oasis and beehive tombs, as well as the Al Ain Zoo and Sheikh Zayed Desert Learning Centre , one of the best displays dating to pre-historic UAE

See our complete guide to exploring historical places in Dubai

Additional Dubai itinerary day trips

  • Head over the mountains to the east coast and spend some time in Fujairah , including snorkelling and scuba diving opportunities
  • Scale to the UAE’s tallest peak in Ras Al Khaimah and experience a modern pearl diving farm
  • Cross the border into the remote Omani enclave of Musandam for a day of sailing, dolphin spotting, and snorkelling
  • Check out the amazing outdoor adventures, hikes, and water sports on offer at Wadi Hub, Hatta

See our complete guide to Dubai day trips

Additional Adventure Activities

  • Turn a desert safari into a night under the stars and overnight glamping experience
  • Join a camp with a traditional early morning camel caravan experience
  • Take on the world’s longest zipline in the Hajar Mountains
  • Try flyboarding in the Arabian Gulf!
  • Go cage diving with the sharks at Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo
  • Take on indoor skiing at Mall of the Emirates

dubai relax travel

It really depends if you’re coming just to get a taster for future trips, a stopover on a long journey, or simply to relax in the sun. If you want to “see it all” and explore more of the UAE and the Arabian Peninsula, no, it’s not enough; we’d recommend two weeks to thoroughly cover the United Arab Emirates. 7 days will be a good sample though of everything the country has to offer but with plenty left to enjoy on future trips to Dubai.

Yes, in theory, you could squeeze in an exciting and action-packed trip to both cities in one week, but you will be exhausted and only scratch the surface. You can fit the very biggest highlights of Abu Dhabi into one day but realistically, give yourself 2 to 3 in Abu Dhabi and 7 or 8 in Dubai, 14 days if you really want to see the whole of the United Arab Emirates with a few break days built in.

It depends on what sort of budget you are operating at. We talk more about money matters here . If you consider a cheapish hotel room for two, close to the Metro can be obtained for around 200 AED, a day pass on the Metro 20 AED, meals, if you go cheap and cheerful, could boil down to 50-100 AED a day. So before your airfares and any fancy extras like waterpark days or desert tours, let’s say 300 AED per day or c 2000 AED for a week in Dubai ($545USD). It’s not the cheapest city, but there are ways you can save money, as we discuss in our budget guide to Dubai .

A wonderful tour to Abu Dhabi

There was a wonderful trip to Abu Dhabi that Anna helped organize, an interesting excursion accompanied us all the way from Dubai. Thank you for a wonderful day in Abu Dhabi and the opportunity to see the Louvre and the mosque

dubai relax travel

I took a group tour to Dubai. It was very good and informative. Our guide, Tatiana, was very knowledgeable and reliable, I learned lots of interesting facts about Dubai. Pictures that I took came out to be great!

We took a sightseeing tour. First stop was Dubai Marina. We took a boat ride. The excursion was organized by car. I was surprised that we didn’t stop at the Burj al Arab. We didn’t get to Antlantis, we stopped opposite it. Therefore, in the photographs the hotel turned out to be very far away. We didn’t have a good walk around Madinat, the stop was for 20 minutes. Due to an operator error, I had to buy an extra ticket to the Aquarium, so the excursion came with an invoice. So be careful when booking excursions - it is unclear whether it was an accidental error or a deliberate mistake by the operator. The guide Marina answered all the questions and handed out bottles of water to everyone.

We have booked three tickets to Dubai Miracle Garden and Global Village via Sputnik8, and agent Anna sent us tickets a day before the date of visit We didn't have any problems with these tickets, everything went smooth Thanks

The tour guides they provide help you dive into the city rulea, habits, traditions and views. The operator who we were assigned yo during our stay in Dubai was extremely friendly and helpful even with the smallest details. Great agency!

We are very pleased with Dubai relax tours. We are especially grateful to the present agent Anna, who booked the hotel and excursions for us, telling us about all the details. Everything was on top.

Traveling to Dubai for the First Time (2024): 19 Tips & Tricks

Traveling to Dubai (United Arab Emirates) for the first time  and not sure where to start? Indeed, planning a trip to Dubai might be overwhelming, even more so if this is your first time in this rapidly growing and continuously changing city!

When is the best time to visit? How much time do you need in Dubai? What are the best areas to stay in and how to travel around? Do you need to pre-book tickets or can you just go with the flow? How to save time and money and still see the best that Dubai has to offer?

Dubai is a city of contrasts, a place where modern extravagance and traditional values go hand in hand. From its towering skyscrapers to its pristine beaches and bustling souks, visiting Dubai is like stepping into a different world…

To help you plan your first trip to this dynamic and unique city, in this guide we share some of our top travel tips for visiting Dubai .

We have visited Dubai several times and all the information and tips in this article are based on our personal experience. Some of these tricks we only learned after several trips…

This practical guide includes all the info I wish we had known before planning a trip to Dubai. These tips will not only help you plan your trip, but will also show you how to make the best of your visit, time, and budget. Find out!

Top 5 Experiences in Dubai:

  • Burj Khalifa (book in advance + opt for the level 148 ticket for priority access).
  • Desert Safari.
  • Museum of the Future (book well in advance!).
  • Luxury Yacht Tour .
  • Abu Dhabi Day Trip .

What to know when traveling to Dubai - practical information and helpful travel tips for visiting Dubai UAE

Here are our top travel tips for visiting Dubai:

1. Avoid Traveling in Summer

Dubai is known for its scorching temperatures, especially during the summer months. To give you an idea, average daytime temperatures during June, July, and August are well over 40°C (104°F). Even in April or November, Dubai temperatures usually still exceed 30°C (86°F).

The best time to visit Dubai is during the winter months – between December and February. The daytime temperatures at this time of the year are usually around 25°C (77°F). So it’s still warm enough to enjoy beaches, pools, and waterparks, but the temperatures are also pleasant for sightseeing and outdoor activities.

Good to know: Winter is also the peak tourist season in Dubai. So expect accommodation prices to be higher and more crowds at the main attractions. However, with some advance planning and preparation, you can still have a very enjoyable visit, more than in the summer.

The shoulder season – the months of March-April or October-November – can be a good time to visit Dubai as well. If you don’t mind temperatures of around 30-35°C (86-95°F), you can take advantage of somewhat lower prices and fewer crowds than in the winter.

In addition, you may want to check when Ramadan is. During this month, most Muslims do not eat from sunrise to sunset, so many restaurants will be closed during the day. This may might impact your experience, depending on the places you visit.

TIP: No matter when you visit Dubai, be prepared for the heat by wearing lightweight, breathable clothing, using sun protection, and staying hydrated. Plan outdoor activities for the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the peak heat.

2. Book Attraction Tickets in Advance

One of the biggest mistakes you can make when planning a trip to Dubai is not to plan/book attraction tickets in advance.

Booking in advance means more time slots to choose from, better prices, and less time wasted queuing.  After all, you want to make the most of your trip to Dubai and not spend all your precious time standing in lines.

Good to know: Tickets to many popular attractions in Dubai are often sold out at least a few days in advance. Furthermore, many tickets are cheaper if booked online. In addition, some attraction tickets, e.g. Atlantis Aquaventure , cost less if you book at least a week before your visit.

For some places, not reserving in advance means that you won’t be able to visit at all.  For example, the Museum of the Future is so popular that all tickets are usually sold out at least 2-3 weeks upfront. If you want to be able to choose the time slot that fits you best, you need to book at least a month in advance.

If you want to visit observation decks at Burj Khalifa or Dubai Frame , you also need to book ahead. In most cases, a few days in advance is sufficient, but it really depends on the period when you travel and how flexible you are. Also, consider visiting these attractions early in the morning or late in the evening for smaller crowds and better photo opportunities.

PRO TIP: For Burj Khalifa, we recommend getting a ticket that includes Level 148 . Not only you get to visit another level which is not included with standard tickets, but you also get skip-the-line access through the security check and at the elevators, and it includes some snacks and drinks. It’s well worth it.

Overall, we always recommend booking tickets and tours at least a month before your trip. But keep in mind that for many popular destinations worldwide booking a month or even two upfront is not sufficient anymore.

Tickets don’t get cheaper and there’s less availability the longer you wait. Plus, if you use GetYourG u ide for all attraction tickets and tours like we do, you can take advantage of their very flexible cancelation policy.

Good to know: Booking tickets/tours via websites like GetYourGuide , Viator , or Tiqets also saves you money on exchange rates. The exchange rate they use is the official rate and transactions are in your currency. Whereas if you pay on the spot, it will usually cost you quite a lot more (not only because many tickets are more expensive at the counter, but also because of credit card fees, exchange rate deviations, etc.).

Plus, booking and paying ahead makes it easier to budget for your vacation and keep your credit card’s spending limit available for other expenses during your trip.

3. Foresee Enough Time & Plan Wisely

There is one thing that you may not realize as a first-time visitor to Dubai and that’s how huge the city is. It’s not a place that you can compare to cities like Rome or London , or even New York City where you can still walk between many attractions and see a lot in a short time…

Dubai is totally different! It’s big, not really walkable (except in some areas), and the attractions are spread out all over the enormous and ever-growing city.

Plus, road works and traffic jams turn every ride into an expedition. The same trip that takes 20 minutes at night or early in the morning can take you an hour or even longer during the day. And yes, public transport can be a good option, but it also has its limitations – more about it further below.

Good to know: When planning your sightseeing itinerary, you will see that most Dubai attractions work with timed entry slots. Be sure to foresee plenty of extra time everywhere though! Even with timed entry tickets, you will often be standing in line for an hour or even longer, not to mention the time that it takes to actually visit the place or get from one attraction to the other.

TIP: So while planning what to see and do, foresee enough extra time between the sights and don’t try to do too much in a single day. Also, group the attractions based on their location, and go for a mix of top attractions with some lesser-known ones. That way, you don’t have to rush from one queue to another and your trip will be much more relaxed.

This brings us to the next tip – see below.

AYA Universe - Dubai travel tips

4. Don’t Try to See Everything

There is so much to see and do in Dubai that you could easily stay here for a few months and still not experience everything the area has to offer. So resist FOMO and the urge of having to see ‘everything’. It’s simply impossible, especially if you are only traveling to Dubai for just a few days or a week.

TIP: Choose a few places, attractions, and experiences that interest you the most and focus on those rather than ticking off boxes just because some guidebook told you that one or the other place is ‘a must’.

If you absolutely want to go to the top of Burj Khalifa, well – just do it and tick it off your bucket list. After all, how often will you get a chance to visit the world’s tallest building… In that case, book tickets in advance and be prepared to queue, or save time and avoid the crowds with priority access .

On the other hand, maybe you are perfectly content just seeing the building from the outside and rather spend your time visiting other viewing platforms like Sky Views , the View at The Palm , or Dubai Frame …

Or maybe you don’t care about any of these at all and much rather spend a day at a water park , exploring the old town souks (markets), or enjoying the views from a luxury yacht …

Dubai has so much to offer to all types of travelers. So personalize your itinerary based on what you really want to do, taking into account the time that you have, your interests, and your budget. If you are visiting Dubai with the family, try to incorporate some fun activities for the kids in your itinerary as well, even if it means that you’ll have less time for sightseeing.

5. Consider Tours & Private Drivers

If you want to see a lot of Dubai in a short time or you don’t know where to even start deciding where to go, consider booking tours or private guides/drivers .

Sometimes, a private driver can also be cheaper than taking a taxi between all those places, and often, you can also find cars that can take up to 6 passengers (vs 4 in most taxis).

Just to be clear, I am talking about quickly seeing multiple places all over the city in a single day. If you want to spend more time exploring the sites, you better go on your own.

There are tons of different ‘city highlights’ tours that bring you to many of the main landmarks of Dubai in (half) a day. Keep in mind that in most cases, your ‘visit’ will be just a quick photo stop, so it’s not comparable to actually visiting the sights. But it’s a good way to get an introduction to Dubai and catch a glimpse of the top spots.

PRO TIP: If you do a city highlights tour, do it at the beginning of your trip! That way, you can later come back to some of the places that you like the most. An ideal way to explore Dubai is to take an introductory city tour first as you arrive and then thoroughly visiting some of the main landmarks and attractions on your own later.

Abu Dhabi day trip tip: One of the best guided tours we recently did in Dubai was this highly-rated tour. If you want to see the top sights of Abu Dhabi in a day, this tour has by far the best itinerary (I compared many tours before we chose this one and it didn’t disappoint).

6. Save Time & Money with Combination Tickets

Dubai is expensive, there is no arguing about it. But with some smart planning, you can save some money on some of the main attractions.

One of the best ways to do this is by opting for combination tickets and/or city cards that include several popular places.

Here are some of the most popular deals:

  • Burj Khalifa + Dubai Aquarium (+-$20 savings per person).
  • Atlantis Aquaventure + Lost Chambers Aquarium (+-$25-30 savings per person).
  • GoCity Explorer Pass (up to 50% savings, depending on the attractions you visit).

Good to know: Some tickets cost more during the most popular times. For example, Burj Khalifa around sunset. So if you want to save money, be sure to check prices for different time slots/days when making reservations.

Lost Chambers Aquarium in Dubai

7. Stay Longer

You might be wondering how much time you need to see the best of Dubai. Well, there is really no straightforward answer to this and so much depends on your interests.

That being said, I recommend planning at least a week for a first visit to Dubai. But if you have time and your budget allows it, stay longer. You won’t get bored!

With a week in Dubai, you will be able to visit most of the top landmarks, explore several different parts of the city, and also find some time to relax and unwind. If you want to spend more time at the beach or by the pool, visit a water park or a theme park with your kids, or make a day trip to Abu Dhabi, ideally, you plan at least 10-12 days for Dubai.

But don’t worry if your trip is shorter and you can’t extend it. You can have a perfectly enjoyable visit and see a lot even if you only have a day or two in Dubai. Via the link below, you can find plenty of ideas for planning a shorter visit.

8. Choose the Location of Your Hotel Wisely

Deciding where to stay in Dubai might not be as straightforward as you may think, especially if the main purpose of your visit is to explore the city.

There is not one perfect place to stay in Dubai – it’s simply much too big and too spread out for that.

However, some areas are better than others and some are really a disaster for commute. If you pick the wrong location, you might be stuck in traffic for hours every time you want to go anywhere and do some sightseeing. On the other hand, that same spot might be perfect for those who are mainly interested in swimming and dining, and are just looking for a relaxing vacation with maybe one or two excursions that include a pick-up and drop-off at the hotel…

TIP: I strongly recommend that you look at the map and the location of the places that you want to visit before deciding where to stay in Dubai. Also, consider how you will travel around.

For example, staying within walking distance of a metro station might save you a lot of time and money on commuting if you plan to do lots of sightseeing. Whereas staying in a nice walkable area with lots of shops and restaurants will be ideal if you like to go out at night.

Here are two of the very best areas to stay in Dubai:

  • Dubai Downtown (the area around Dubai Mall – Burj Khalifa) is very central and is perfect for those who want to do a lot of sightseeing, but also for shopping and dining. Sofitel Dubai Downtown is a great choice in this area, close to Dubai Mall and just near a metro station. Remember, however, that this is the heart of the city, so very busy and far from the sea.
  • Dubai Marina in the south of the city is another popular area to stay in Dubai. It’s a great choice for those who are looking for a more relaxing vacation, boat trips, water parks, dining, shopping, etc. The beach is not too far from here, however, it will take at least 45-60 minutes to reach the city center. Millennium Place is a very popular hotel not too far from the main Marina area and close to the metro. On a somewhat higher budget, JW Marriott Hotel Marina is a wonderful choice if you want to be in the heart of the Marina.

TIP: On our most recent visit to Dubai, we stayed at Rove La Mer Beach Hotel . It’s close to the downtown area, so quite convenient for sightseeing, but also with direct access to a private beach – the best of both worlds. We loved this hip modern hotel, also because it’s much smaller and more intimate – a kind of place where you don’t have to worry about losing your kids at breakfast. It also offers great price/quality for Dubai. The only downside is that the area around the hotel is still developing with lots of construction going on, but it will only get more attractive in the future.

9. Beware of Tourism Taxes

Hotel stays (including hotel apartments, guesthouses, holiday homes, etc.) in the United Arab Emirates are taxed with various fees, surcharges, and taxes. These amounts might vary depending on the hotel, but it’s not abnormal that these taxes add over 20-25% to your room rate.

For example, our recent hotel invoice in Dubai showed a 10% service charge, 7% municipality fees, 5 % VAT, and an additional 10 AED (+-$3) Tourism Dirham Fee per night.

Altogether, we paid about 24,4% on top of the official room rate. The good thing is that we knew in advance how much we had to pay. Otherwise, this could be a very unpleasant surprise…

So when looking for accommodation in Dubai and comparing prices, make sure that you are actually comparing the same thing!

Many hotel websites show prices without (some/any) taxes, so you may think that booking directly with them is cheaper. Often, it’s not the case at all!

TIP: We always use Booking.com for our accommodation bookings, also in Dubai. With them, you see the total price, including all fees and taxes, so you know exactly how much you will spend. (Depending on booking conditions, you may have to prepay for the stay in advance whereas the taxes are charged separately when you arrive at the hotel, but the total amount you see when making a reservation is correct).

10. Use Public Transport & Local Taxis

Dubai’s public transport system is efficient and inexpensive. Depending on where you are staying and traveling to, it might be very convenient to use the Dubai Metro, Tram, Monorail, or even local buses.

However, this depends on the exact trip you are planning to make and also on the size of your group. Sometimes, public transport is the best way to get around the city quickly and affordably. But there are also many situations when it’s a real hassle and doesn’t make your trip faster or much cheaper.

In those cases, you will be glad to know that taxis are rather affordable in Dubai . The most expensive taxi ride we recently took in Dubai was 25 kilometers, it took over 50 minutes, and it cost us 76 AED (+-$21).

However, be careful that you only use official taxis! Because e.g. Uber is often quite a lot more expensive. Not even to mention that they sometimes charge twice the price during peak times of increased demand. We learned this the hard way, after taking a few overpriced Uber rides…

Also, unlike in many other countries where we use Uber all the time, in Dubai, you never really know how much you will pay until the end of the ride. The price you see in the beginning is usually just an approximate indication.

TIP: Install Careem app on your smartphone and use it to request ‘Hala Taxi’. That’s the best way to get an official taxi in Dubai. If you request ‘Rides’, it works similar as Uber and is more expensive. We learned this from a local taxi driver after a few very unpleasant experiences with Uber and private drivers randomly offering their services at the main tourist spots, and it saved us a fortune.

To give you an idea, we were quoted 120 AED ($33) by Uber and 150 AED ($40) by random ‘kind strangers’ for a ride that in the end cost us 22 AED ($6) by official taxi. When it comes to busy times and popular tourist hotspots, getting a taxi ride in Dubai can feel like navigating the Wild West…

11. Start Your Days Early

One of the best ways to make the most out of your trip to Dubai is to start your days early.

There’s much less traffic in the morning, so you can get everywhere much quicker. But the main advantage is that there are hardly any other people, even at the most popular attractions. In addition – if you are visiting Dubai in the warmest months – getting up early is the best way to avoid the biggest heat.

Good to know: Be sure to check opening times of the places you want to visit. While some attractions don’t open until noon, many others are open from 9-10 AM. There are also places – like e.g. Burj Khalifa – that you can visit at 7 AM, and on some days even earlier if you like…

For example, we recently went to the Aquaventure Water Park at Atlantis around opening time. There were no lines at the entrance and we could also do many popular slides without any wait. A few hours later, people were queuing for 45-60 minutes at the same rides…

In addition, the taxi ride to get there in the morning took us just 22 minutes. That same ride to get back to our hotel in the evening was over 50 minutes, not counting more than 10 minutes for a taxi to arrive… So yes, it really pays to explore Dubai in the morning!

12. Stay Connected

While pretty much all public places and tourist attractions in Dubai offer free Wi-Fi, we highly recommend getting a local SIM card for your visit to UAE. There are so many situations when it’s just much easier to stay connected. For example, if you need to book a taxi ride, or book some tickets on the go, etc.

Depending on your data plan, roaming can cost a fortune in Dubai. My provider sent me an sms saying that using data in UAE will cost me 15 euros per megabyte (ouch! and no, thank you!). So the first thing I did after landing in Dubai was disconnect roaming.

There are several ways to approach this:

  • Pocket Wi-Fi. One of the easiest ways to stay connected on the go is by renting a pocket WiFi at Dubai airport . This is a very convenient option if you don’t want to change anything on your phone. It’s also convenient if you are traveling with a family/friends since you can connect up to 10 devices to it.
  • Local SIM card. Alternatively, you can opt opt for a physical SIM card, which is also available at the airport . With this option, you will need to place this card into your phone. If you want to keep your ‘own’ phone number working as well, see if your phone has a dual SIM option – then you can use both. Otherwise, you may want to bring an old phone to use with this local card.
  • eSIM. There are many providers available (just search online), but what’s included and the prices vary a lot. Depending on which one you choose and also on your device, this can be a very easy and simple process, but it’s also not very straightforward if you have never done it before. Also, not all phones allow eSIM – so be sure to double-check if your smartphone has this capability.

13. Respect Local Culture

While Dubai is a very cosmopolitan city, it’s also a place with different cultural norms and traditions. Overall, UAE is very ‘Western’ and Dubai in particular is very laid back and relaxed. With over 200 nationalities living in Dubai, it’s a true melting pot of different cultures. Still, remember that you are a visitor here, and be respectful.

Dress modestly, especially when visiting religious sites or public places. Also, avoid public displays of affection, as these can be considered disrespectful.

If you’re visiting during Ramadan, be mindful of local customs and traditions. Keep in mind that many traditional restaurants and cafes will be closed during the day but will come to life after sunset. If you are visiting during Ramadan and are planning sightseeing during the day or a day trip to e.g. Abu Dhabi, it’s advisable to pack your own lunch.

One of the most common questions we get is what to wear when traveling to Dubai. Well, you will see people wearing all kinds of clothing – from burkas that cover the entire body to revealing summer clothes that hardly cover much at all. However, while a lot is tolerated, it’s not always appreciated.

So when in doubt, remember that it’s always safer to cover your knees and shoulders. See-through clothing is also not the best idea, unless on a beach.

TIP: Wear loose light clothes – not as much for religious or cultural reasons, but also because of the heat. Long skirts/dresses or wide summer pants will be much more comfortable than tight clothes.

14. Use Credit Cards

The official currency in Dubai is the United Arab Emirates Dirham (AED) and all the prices are displayed in this currency. All regular businesses accept cash and electronic means of payment, such as credit cards or smartphone payments.

We haven’t encountered a single place in Dubai that wouldn’t accept a credit card. So if you want to make it easy and simple for yourself, you don’t even need to exchange money and can simply use cards everywhere.

Important! Inform your bank about your visit so that they don’t block your cards for ‘suspicious activity’. And even then… Despite precautions, one of my cards got blocked by a credit card company after a random payment at a restaurant in one of the main malls in Dubai. We had to call the bank to get them to unblock it again and they say that this happens when ‘the systems’ suspect anything suspicious, despite us having notified our bank in advance…

If you want to leave a tip to someone or purchase something small, you may want to have some local currency at hand. In that case, you can get some cash from local ATMs which you will find in malls all over the city. I strongly encourage you to only use ATMs attached to local bank offices as some others might charge additional fees and/or give the worst exchange rates.

PRO TIP: When using ATMs to withdraw money or paying by card, you always get an option between local currency (AED) and your own currency. Always choose local currency (AED) – that way, your bank will do the exchange and you will always get a better rate than the one offered by ATMs or pay terminals.

Good to know: We heard it on quite a few occasions that money is king in Dubai and it doesn’t matter in which currency you want to pay – they will accept it. Indeed, this is the case at the markets (souks) and some smaller private businesses. On a recent trip to Dubai, I could use Euros at the souk. The sellers also told us that they accept credit cards (just make sure to haggle – see below).

15. Shop Smart

Dubai is a shopper’s paradise, but prices can vary a lot depending on where you shop. The prestigious locations like the Dubai Mall are home to some of the most expensive brands in the world and the prices here are usually very high. You will be able to find much better deals at the Dubai Outlet Mall, for example.

Also, if you go to various local markets (souks), be sure to shop around for better deals. Also, don’t forget to haggle – and not a little! Many sellers take advantage of tourists asking ridiculously high prices. Often, 3-4 times higher than what you should pay, and likely even more… Don’t be shy, offer the price that seems correct to you, and be prepared to walk away.

On a recent trip, I got intrigued by a perfume someone put on me while walking through the Dubai Spice Souk (this is common practice – people will (try to) put all kinds of stuff on you – from scarfs to perfumes etc.). So I asked how much it was. The prices depend on the size and the design of the bottle, they said, and so we settled on a medium-sized simple bottle and they told me it was 280 AED (+- 70 euros).

No way I would pay 70 euros for a tiny bottle of perfume at a market! And so we started the negotiations. In the end, I paid 20 euros in cash which – to me – felt like a correct price. The seller was telling me that this was way too low and he was only willing to do it because it was our last day in Dubai and my kids were cute… 😉

After that, I saw similar perfumes at Dubai Airport souvenir store and indeed, most of them were about 20-25 euros for about the same size I got. So don’t be afraid to negotiate and if you don’t feel comfortable with the price or the quality, simply walk away.

16. Explore Beyond the Glitz

While Dubai is best known for its skyscrapers and extravagant landmarks, don’t miss out on its cultural gems as well.

One of the best places to catch a glimpse of authentic culture is Old Dubai. Visit the historic Al Fahidi neighborhood, explore the spice and gold souks, and take a traditional abra ride along Dubai Creek. These experiences are also quite touristy, but they are also totally different from the main attractions in Dubai.

TIP: There are many excellent guided tours that visit Old Dubai . They all take you to the same area, do the traditional boat ride on Dubai Creek, and visit the same local markets. Most tours also include local coffee and dades, and some also food tasting. While you can just visit the area on your own, these tours are really affordable and give you a somewhat deeper insight and insider tips.

On our recent visit, we chose this walking/food tour . It started with some traditional food tasting at a local restaurant, followed by a visit to the old town, a boat ride, and ended at the gold and spice souks. A nice way to spend a few hours and get to know a different side of the city.

17. Avoid Weekends

If you think Dubai is busy on a weekday, try to imagine it on a weekend or on public holidays.

So if you can adjust your plans, avoid visiting the most popular attractions on weekends (Friday afternoon, Saturday, and Sunday).

If you are in Dubai for more than a few days, this is really not difficult to do. Visit the most popular places such as Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall, Global Village , Miracle Garden , or theme parks and water parks on weekdays.

On weekends, you can do more relaxing activities such as a sightseeing a yacht trip , a speedboat tour , spend time at the beach or by the pool, go parasailing or jetskiing , or take a desert tour – see below.

Dubai Mall and Aquarium

18. Experience the Desert

No trip to Dubai would be complete without experiencing its desert. Book a desert safari tour for an adrenaline-pumping ride over the dunes, followed by a traditional Bedouin-style dinner under the stars. It’s an unforgettable experience!

There are many desert tour options , but when you look closely, they are very similar in what they offer. Depending on the option you book, you have one main activity – usually, dune bashing in a jeep, quad, or camel ride. Afterward, you spend time in a desert camp where you can partake in all kinds of different experiences.

Some of these experiences include taking pictures with falcons and camels, sandboarding, various shows (traditional dance, belly dance, fire show), henna tattoos, etc. There is always lots of local food and it’s surprisingly good.

Our experience: We have done two desert tours in Dubai (on different trips) and they were both very similar and both excellent. The first time we went on this dune safari tour and on a recent trip, we opted for this highly-rated tour that includes a longer camel ride . In both cases, the second part of the tour was quite similar, the main difference was that the first tour included an exhilarating jeep ride through the dunes, and the second one – a 45-minute camel ride.

The whole family really enjoyed these tours and I couldn’t say which one is better. All I can tell you is that it’s a nice experience that will make your trip to Dubai even more memorable.

19. Don’t Forget Little Important Details

Here are some additional travel tips for Dubai:

  • Bring a reusable water bottle. Dubai is so warm and dry that you will want to carry a bottle of water on you at all times. If you want to minimize plastic waste, you may want to bring your own reusable water bottle. Tap water is, in general, safe to drink. In addition, you will also see free water taps at some public areas, where you can refill your bottles.
  • Pack a travel adapter. UAE uses  Type G  plugs, same as in the UK. However, we noticed that in most hotels you can also simply use European plugs and sometimes a simple USB cable. Still, we always pack a Type G adapter just to be safe.
  • Bring a power bank to charge your phone on the go. Also, carry extra batteries for your camera.
  • Know that you are not obliged to tip, but it’s also appreciated. Many people tip 10-15% at the restaurants or give a small tip to tour guides. If you like to tip, make sure you have some small bills of local currency.
  • Bring a small crossbody bag for sightseeing. At some landmarks, you will be asked to leave bigger bags/backpacks in a locker. I like Hedgren crossbody bags for travel – they are light, sturdy, and very durable. The one I have is big enough to hold my camera, a power bank, documents, and even two water bottles, and I was never asked to use a locker. But pack the smallest backpack and you’ll often have to leave it behind…
  • Don’t forget sun protection. A sun hat, sunscreen lotion, and sunglasses are a must when visiting Dubai!

5 Great Ways to Relax in Dubai

  • Post category: Middle East

Dubai is a city of bright lights, wide avenues and stunning desert scenes. It’s buzzing with energy and exuberance and every day is more exciting than the last.

Here are five of the best ways to relax in the international city of Dubai.

1. Visit a Spa

Dubai Spa

Dubai is awash with terrific spas — well over 100 — in both the many 5-star hotels and across the city itself. You can enjoy a massage in Dubai, or a facial, a nice steam…whatever helps you to unwind and relax. A typical spa day ranges from $200-250 up to the premium level of $1400 at places like the Versace VIP Spa Journey , which includes chauffeur service, luxury food and champagne.

2. Take a Swim

Sometimes it’s not a massage in Dubai that you need, but rather a way to escape the heat. It’s undoubtedly hot, and the best way to cool off is with a lovely day by the pool. One of the finest in the city is the InterContinental Dubai Festival City pool. This runs daily from 10am to 7pm. You can purchase a day pass, often with special deals to include a buffet lunch and even spa time.

3. Day at the Beach

Dubai Beach

Perhaps a pool isn’t really the scene you want, but rather a beach and the raw, fresh energy of the sea, then Jumeirah Public Beach is the perfect spot. There are actually around 27 open beaches in and around Dubai, but Jumeirah is frequently ranked in the number 1 spot. With its long, spacious pure sandy beach, and warm azure-blue waters of the Gulf lapping at the shore, it’s the perfect place to relax after a busy morning of sightseeing.

4. The Dubai Mall

Is shopping really relaxing? For a certain type of person, it absolutely is. You’ll find the world-famous Dubai mall on Al Mussallah Road in downtown Dubai, and it’s open from 10am until midnight every day of the week. Now, shopping may not be such stress relief for everyone, but for that certain type of energetic person who loves new things, it’s the best.

The mall offers 1,200 shops, as well as nice places to get food and drink. Saunter around the equivalent of 50 football fields of space to your heart’s content.

5. Desert Massage

Dubai Desert skyline view

Our list comes full circle back to spa treatment, and in particular massage. For those looking for a truly unique massage in Dubai, then a Lomi Lomi massage at the Al Maha luxury resort could be just what the doctor ordered. Originating in Hawaii , Lomi Lomi massage uses warm oil and a mixture of techniques to achieve relaxation. Come for the unique relaxing massage, stay for the unique and unconventional setting.

Dubai: An Oasis in the Desert

Just as a desert oasis serves to relax and replenish weary travelers, Dubai too has much to offer those who would seek relaxation and recuperation. While the sands of the desert swirl and lift away, so too can your tension and stress. Leave it all to Dubai.

Dubai Travel Tips 101 - A First Timer's Holy Grail

Below are the tips and hacks you're here for. Read on and thank me later!

#1 Grab a Go Dubai Card with no second thoughts

The Go Dubai Card is the smartest investment you can make upon reaching Dubai. This card allows you to save on the admission rates to many of Dubai’s top attractions. The card currently includes access to the top of Burj Khalifa, Dubai sightseeing tours, and many other activities that would otherwise cost you dearly.

Read all about creating a money-saving itinerary using the Go Dubai Card

#2 Let your belongings be

Dubai is one of the safest cities to be in. The government administers the city with an iron fist and as such, the rate of crime is negligible. So you can stop worrying about your belongings and enjoy the sights and attractions of the city.

#3 Know the Dubai Airport well

Fittingly, the Dubai International Airport is huge in every sense of the term. It will take you quite some time to get from one part of the airport to the other. Do not plan any activities immediately after arriving. Also, leave for the airport well in advance to board your flight.

Here's all you need to know about Airport transfers in Dubai .

#4 Dubai's not as conservative as you think

Dubai Travel Tips - First Timers

You may have heard horrific stories of foreigners being locked up for PDA, public inebriation and homosexuality. All that said, Dubai is way more liberal than most Islamic countries. There are no concrete laws in Dubai that forbid anybody from wearing any kind of clothes but being a country with conservative values, it is preferable and respectful to wear clothes that cover the shoulders and knees. The nightlife is quite happening and you'll find expats and tourists drinking and canoodling in the many bars and clubs in the city. There's even a healthy gay community in Dubai! As long as you steer clear of cultural insensitivities, you're good to go in Dubai.

#5 make inquiries about your medications.

There are some substances that may be legal in your country but are forbidden in the UAE. Most notable amongst them are medicines containing codeine or opiate ingredients. Visit your doctor beforehand to know the composition of your medications and change your prescription if required.

#6 Limit your liquor to bars & indoors

UAE being an Islamic nation follows the decrees dictated by the religion quite closely. Alcohol is not permitted outside the licensed restaurants and bars. You cannot be seen inebriated in public. A wide variety of drugs are also illegal in Dubai and their use is a punishable offense. Even electronic cigarettes are confiscated upon arrival.

#7 Check the calendar for Islamic events

During Islamic holidays like Eid, Ramazan etc, most happenings in the city are slim and limited. This may also affect the transport system within the city. In special cases, like during the holy month of Ramadan, food and beverage are not available before sunset. Plan your trip and daily sightseeing with these in mind.

#8 Don't forget to check out the Spas

Dubai Travel Tips - First Timers

Not many people know Dubai for its spas, but once you go to one of the city’s spas, you will know why this point exists. The luxury hotels of Dubai have these spas that will change your opinion of spas forever. You can give the beauty clinics in the malls a miss.

#9 Malls have a lot more than just shops in Dubai

While malls are mostly earmarked as a place to grab some food and shop, Dubai’s malls are way beyond this limited identity. Most malls have fun activities like gaming zones, ski slopes, aquariums or something that is definitely worth sticking around for. Moreover, if you thought that shopping at a Dubai mall would be a routine experience, you are wrong.

Here's all that you can do in Dubai Mall with this all access Dubai Big Ticket .

#10 Shed your inhibitions when eating out

Possibly the biggest issue that most people face when traveling to another country for the first time is getting accustomed to the food. In Dubai, being conservative when picking your food can only mean that you are losing out. Apart from the delicious local dishes, the city also serves Iranian, Filipino, Yemeni, Bangladeshi, Ethiopian, Pakistani, Afghan food to name a few.

#12 Weekends in Dubai start on Friday

Dubai Travel Tips - First Timers

While the rest of the world powers through Monday blues, those in Dubai have Sunday blues. This is because weekends in Dubai are Friday & Saturday, with the weekday resuming on Sunday. So shift your sunday brunch plans to Friday brunch plans because that is how this part of the world works.

#13 Dubai's not a city for walking

Those who love exploring a city on foot will be disappointed because this is one city that is explored better in a car. For starters, the heat is unbearable and secondly, the city is not designed for pedestrians. While it is pedestrian friendly, you probably won't feel safe walking on a footpath flanked by cars swooshing past 120km/hr. The only places you'll feel safe and comfortable walking are the malls which make up for the lack of footpaths!

#14 Should you tip?

Tipping isn’t norm in Dubai, but it is a common practice. Taxi drivers don’t expect to receive a tip, but luggage carriers and supermarket baggers are given a small tip for their services by most locals.

#15 Nightlife in Dubai is actually LIT

While most people may be apprehensive about Dubai's nightlife, you must know that Dubai's nightlife is vibrant and happening with a top-notch choice of bars, nightclubs and restaurants to lounge in and party. Parties often go on till 3:00 AM, so put on your best heels and party the night away while in Dubai. Yacht cruises in Dubai are also a great way to drink, dine and party; a common extravagance among locals.

Check out these clubs for the most happening nightlife in Dubai .

#16 Discover Dubai beyond the skyscrapers

Dubai Travel Tips - First Timers

Dubai has a rich history, and the city's culture is absolutely fascinating if you scratch beneath all that gold. Make your way to the spice and gold souqs that fringe the Dubai Creek and haggle your way through turquoise trinkets from Iran, spices from Morocco and silver from Oman. Gold prices in Dubai are relatively cheaper, hence the gold souq is a great place to spend some big money if you're interested in buying some.

#17 Camel Races are a treat

Dubai Travel Tips - First Timers

Camel racing is not so common in most parts of the world, but it Dubai's favourite sport and a real treat for one who has never seen camels racing before. Did you know there are no actual jockeys on these camels, but rather small robots that sit on top of the animals and are controlled by someone nearby!!! The camel-racing tracks are massive that you can barely see the participants from your grandstand perch, but this one makes for a great experience.

Tips For Saving Money On Transportation In Dubai

  • Book your flight tickets to Dubai tickets well in advance to get the best prices. Not to forget, searching for flights on incognito is a good tactic to avoid cookies marking up prices based on your previous searches.
  • Take a flight to Abu Dhabi instead of Dubai as the flight rates to Abu Dhabi are cheaper. Direct buses are available from Abu dhabi to Dubai and you'll reach in less than 1.5 hours.
  • Grab a NOL Travel Card soon after reaching Dubai as cash is not accepted on most public transport modes, except cabs. NOL Card also saves some money as it is a unified payment mode valid over a long period of time. Check out this steal combo - Dubai NOL Metro Card + SIM Card
  • Metro is the cheapest and the fastest way of traveling through the city with tickets starting from AED 4.
  • Buses are pricier than metros and take longer, but they have better connectivity.
  • Refrain from using cabs in Dubai as they are extremely expensive and can run up your costs.
  • Use the ferries to traverse through the Dubai Marina. This mode of transport adds an element of sightseeing to the experience, especially after sundown.
  • Taking an abra ride across the Dubai Creek is a great way to experience the city's historic mode of transport. A one-way ticket per person costs only AED 50, economical and exciting!

Tips for Saving Money on Food in Dubai

  • After you've had your fill with the high-end bougie restaurants in Dubai, walk into the bustling alleys and devour a plate of shawarma and kebab. Not only is it cheaper, it promises an explosion of flavours and authenticity.
  • Ordering takeout in Dubai is not an expensive affair. The online delivery market leaders are UberEats, Zomato delivery and Talabat so feel free to laze at home and order in food at no extra costs( except a nominal delivery fee)
  • One of the cheapest and most delicious options for food available in Dubai is shawarma. It is available with different types of meat ( and vegetarian option of Falafel) and makes for a filling meal.
  • Choose Dubai packaged tours from Headout that offer a bundled meal option to save some more money on your trip.

More Tips To Save Money In Dubai

  • Use online coupons for meals and other deals to save a considerable amount on the actual rate. Zomato Gold, Groupon, Headout Offers are a few you must consider.
  • Choose a hotel close to a metro stop so that you can avail the cheapest and the fastest mode of transport in Dubai.
  • Use the city’s couch-surfing community to save on accommodations.
  • Skip drinking at restaurants and bars outside the happy hours as the normal price of alcohol at bars and restaurants are exorbitantly higher than the actual selling price.
  • If you're staying in Dubai for longer than 3 days, a service apartment or Airbnb works out to be cheaper than a hotel. That way you can even cook your own food and save the hefty service charges that hotels levy.
  • Use the Smart Palms that can be found in the streets of Dubai. These artificial structures that look like palm trees have charging ports and provide free WiFi.

Pure Decadence: Most Luxurious Relaxing Experiences in Dubai

Pure Decadence: Most Luxurious Relaxing Experiences in Dubai

Dubai is a city you are told is full of energy, action and excitement. Every day is filled with thrilling activities, one after another. You’ll be in the desert sandboarding and riding camels one day, and the next you might be riding a jet ski, and on another taking a luxury supercar hire to enjoy the sights and sounds of the city, sampling the restaurants and nightlife. While you’re doing all that, however, it’s important that you also try and find time to relax.

In this article we discover the very best ways to relax in Dubai. However, these are no mere two-hour stops in the local massage centers. We are talking about the most luxurious and relaxing experiences that Dubai has to offer.

1. A Decadent Spa Day What you really need after a long day or two in the desert is a full-blown luxurious spa day in a massage center in Dubai . There are many fine examples, such as SensAsia in the Village Mall, and in-house spas in the city’s many examples of internationally renowned hotels. Get a massage, a facial or one of the unique treatments they offer to unwind and rejuvenate. At any rate, it promises pure comfort and joy.

2. Eat Your Heart Out Another great way to relax in Dubai is to enjoy one of the many exuberant buffet brunches and lunches that are on offer in the city at various locations, especially the international 5-star hotels. The best ones are usually held on Fridays, and prices range from as cheap as AED145 ($39-40), to AED690 ($189) at the top-end with Veuve Clicquot champagne. Please note, however, that drunkenness isn’t tolerated in Dubai, so enjoy that part in moderation! Food, on the other hand, is celebrated, including sumptuous seafood buffets and other international and local delicacies.

Dubai beaches

4. Beach Day When you want to lie around but you’ve already done your spa day, then how about a day at one of Dubai’s fine beaches? Open Beach is free to all the public, but it might be busier than you’d want for a more luxurious and relaxing day. To get a slightly more pristine and premium feel, pay an entrance fee and visit Jumeirah Beach Park instead. Sit on the sand, stare out at the gulf sunset, or enjoy the shade in the lush gardens that are all around the beach area.

5. Tee Off in Dubai! Fore! Dubai is home to some pretty premier golf courses, but perhaps none finer than the 247-acre Arabian Ranch, which was designed by Aussie champion and pro, Ian Baker-Finch. When you’re feeling a little tension, the golf club and ball are perfect conduits through which to channel your angst and any negative feelings you may have. It doesn’t matter if you play a round of 18, or just let off some steam hitting balls with a 3-wood at one of the driving ranges. It’s a quiet, reflective way to ease that burden from your shoulders.

The Enduring Allure of Four Seasons Jumeirah Beach Dubai

Ten years on, locals and an international jet-set crowd are still pulled to this prime beachside resort.

By Emma Al-Mousawi

“This is our third time staying here. This time we’re celebrating our wedding anniversary,” a well-dressed British couple tells me in the lift on my way down to afternoon tea (more on this later) on my first day at Four Seasons Jumeirah Beach in Dubai .

As I sit with a cup of oolong in the glamorously grand Shai Salon, being serenaded by the strums of the hotel ’s resident harpist, I overhear European and local businessmen in English and Arabic, trading credentials whilst sipping cappuccinos and qahwa . At the next table along, I observe a group of young women taking selfies. Later, at the resort’s private beach, I spot two famous faces from the world of sport with their young families. Four Seasons Jumeirah Beach has found that oh-so-allusive formula for universal appeal.

But that’s not to say it doesn’t have personality. For one thing, the staff have loads of it and are adept at making you feel special as soon as you arrive.

Then there’s the decor: opting for a paired back version of Dubai opulence, the hotel takes its design inspiration from Moorish Spain made modern. Shunning the city’s love of skyscrapers, the resort is set within a five-story Andalusian-style property surrounded by lush landscaped gardens. Communal areas are decked in a decidedly neutral color palette of terracotta, sandy beige and flashes of gold leaf. Natural stone and soaring ceilings bring a light airiness and towering flower arrangements act more like artworks.

The location helps too. Opening in 2014 (a lifetime ago in Dubai hotel years) Four Seasons snapped up one of the last prime spots on Jumeirah Beach. Gazing over the Persian Gulf on one side and the iconic cityscape on the other (downtown is 15 15-minute drive), Dubai is yours for the taking, whatever your reason for visiting.

Arguably the most glamorous of the Emirates, Dubai’s suite game is famously strong, and Four Seasons Jumeirah Beach does not disappoint.

I check into a rather enormous one-bedroom Skyline Suite, which spans 1,463 sq-ft – twice the size of the average Manhattan apartment. As the name alludes, the view is marvelous, with uninterrupted vistas over the entirety of downtown – including the Burj Khalifa – from both the living room and bedroom, as well as the two separate outdoor terraces.

Adorned in soothing blues and silver, the suite features a walk-in closet and a lavish marble bathroom with a freestanding bath and Diptyque amenities. Chic, yet luxuriously comfortable, with a king-sized bed so cocooning you will not want to leave in the morning (Four Seasons beds are renowned).

The resort’s Speciality Suites, however, take it up another notch with extra privacy, space and wow factor.

The most palatial is the suitably titled Royal Suite that is accessed via a private elevator. In the lounge, white marble floors and columns, a baby grand piano, a sit-down bar and Venetian chandeliers heap the glamor in this substantial 6,458 sq-ft abode. There is also a kitchen and dining table seating 10 comfortably, whilst floor-to-ceiling doors and windows lead to a full-length furnished terrace overlooking the sea. There is also a study, fitness room and media room, as well as a spa-inspired master bathroom with a steam room and impressive marble soaking tub.

Back to that afternoon tea – this is a must. Crafted by the resort’s famed French pastry chef, Nicolas Lambert, the ‘Héritage’ afternoon tea menu is inspired by a journey from East to West, taking in flavors from the countries renowned for their tea and coffee credentials. Intricate creations like the shrimp and peanut sambal sandwich from Indonesia, and the delicate French lavender tea and figue de solliès are ridiculously indulgent and mouth-wateringly good (our advice is to go on an empty stomach).

There are also four other distinct food and drink offerings within the hotel including Hendricks Bar, a wood-paneled Cuban cigar lounge with expertly shaken cocktails (try the signature Golden Mirror); vegan eatery Folia; and Suq, where an eclectic breakfast buffet is served daily as well as brunches that attract well-heeled locals on the weekend.

The rooftop Mercury Lounge is a popular local hangout with one of the best views in town and live DJ sets until the early morning.

Dinner at the modern Asian beachside restaurant Sea Fu is a real treat. The signature tasting menu allows you to sample the best of everything. However, If you do opt for a la carte, make sure to try the signature volcano rolls with fresh Scottish salmon, pickled radish and teriyaki sauce. A grating of fresh wasabi on the side is the ultimate finishing touch.

Within the gates of the 14-acre resort, you will also find the fashionable ‘Restaurant Village’ across from the hotel’s main entrance, hosting hotspots such as Salt Bae’s Nusr-Et steakhouse; renowned Japanese cocktail bar Mimi Kakushi; and an outpost of London favorite, Coya.

The Pearl Spa features ten treatment rooms and an extensive treatment menu with facials from European brands like Biologique Recherche and Dr Burgener. Signature body treatments include the ‘Arabian oud balance salt glow’, combining an aromatic hot oil massage and salt exfoliation; whilst cupping and sound healing sessions draw inspiration from the Far East.

Sessions with a personal trainer are available at the state-of-the-art fitness center which is open 24 hours. There are also separate male and female sauna and steam facilities, and an indoor lap pool.

Outside, you’ll find two further pools surrounded by loungers, cabanas and private ‘day villas’ fitted with air conditioning, indoor and outdoor showers, a private bathroom, a mini-bar and flat-screen TV.

The luxury continues on the resort’s private beach with sun loungers equipped with a call button to order drinks or extra towels.

With the Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall and The Palm all within a 20-minute drive, Four Seasons Jumeirah Beach is well-placed for exploring the city. A string of taxis wait at the entrance to the resort ready to whisk you to your destination.

The resort also offers a slew of cultural and adventure activities, from touring the storied spice souk to yacht charters.

If visiting for longer than a few days, the Platinum Dessert Experience is a chance to connect with local culture and breathtaking dunes within a private natural reserve. You’ll head out on a wildlife drive in search of oryx before enjoying a falconry performance, camel riding and a six-course feast with fire show and shisha.

International Travel Is Shaking Up The World’s Busiest Airports List

The sheer volume of air passengers last year reflects a robust return to travel — and a shift toward tourism hotspots in Asia and the Middle East.

Global travelers' preferences are shifting, with the Middle East and Asia gaining ground.

C lose to 8.5 billion passengers took a plane trip last year, according to Airports Council International (ACI) World’s just-released list of the top 10 busiest airports worldwide for 2023.

The total volume of passengers represents a 27% overall jump from 2022, fueled by a 37% boost the international travel market—nearly double the 20% increase for domestic travel. Even more notable is how shifts toward tourism hotspots are shaking up the world order for airports.

The increases themselves are not surprising, as last year was a bumper year for travel spending. Tourists around the world injected nearly $10 trillion into the global economy in 2023, according to the World Travel & Tourism Council. That figure represents 9.1% of global GDP.

After crunching the data from over 2,600 airports across more than 180 countries and territories globally, ACI World revealed no change at the top of the busiest-airport list, where Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International has sat at No. 1 for more than two decades. Four other U.S. airports also landed in the top 10: Dallas Fort Worth fell one spot to No. 3; Denver fell three spots to No. 6; Los Angeles fell two spots to No. 8; and Chicago fell five spots to No. 9.

Outside the U.S., there were some very notable shifts reflecting the changing tourism landscape. “Dubai International Airport jumped to second rank for the first time, while Tokyo Haneda International Airport witnessed a remarkable ascent from 16th position in 2022 to 5th in 2023,” said ACI World Director General Luis Felipe de Oliveira. “Additionally, the unwavering strength of Istanbul and New Delhi airports keep them in top ranks, marking significant progress over [pre-pandemic] 2019.”

World’s Busiest Airports in 2023 (Total Volume)

  • Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta (ATL): 104.7M passengers; up 11.7% YOY
  • Dubai, UAE (DXB): 87M passengers; up 31.7% YOY
  • Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW): 81.8M passengers; up 11.4% YOY
  • London Heathrow, UK (LHR): 79.2M passengers; up 28.5% YOY
  • Tokyo Haneda, Japan (HND): 78.7M passengers; up 55.1% YOY
  • Denver (DEN): 77.8M passengers; up 12.3% YOY
  • Istanbul, Turkey (IST): 76M passengers; up 18.3% YOY
  • Los Angeles (LAX): 75.1M passengers; up 13.8% YOY
  • Chicago O’Hare (ORD): 73.9M passengers; up 8.1% YOY
  • Delhi, India (DEL): 72.2M passengers; up 21.4% YOY

Viewed through a wider lens, the 2023 numbers reflect a strengthening of international travel in the Middle East and Asia, said ACI World.

When domestic travel is not included, Dubai International Airport is the world’s No. 1 busiest airport, followed by a trio of European heavyweights: London Heathrow (No. 2), Amsterdam Schiphol (No. 3), and Paris Charles-de-Gaulle (No. 4).

On the international stage, the biggest movers were in Asia. Singapore Changi Airport jumped from No. 9 to No. 5, with an eye-popping 83% increase in international volume. Yet it was Incheon International Airport in Seoul, South Korea, which made the biggest leap from No. 32 to No. 7, due to a massive 213% boost in international passenger traffic, driven mainly by visitors from Japan, China, Taiwan and and elsewhere in Asia.

World’s Busiest Airports in 2023 (International)

  • London Heathrow, UK (LHR): 74.9M passengers; up 28.6% YOY
  • Schiphol, Netherlands (AMS): 61.9M passengers; up 17.9% YOY
  • Paris Ch.-de-Gaulle, France (CDG): 61.4M passengers; up 18.6% YOY
  • Singapore Changi (SIN): 58.4M passengers; up 83.1% YOY
  • Istanbul, Turkey (IST): 58.2M passengers; up 20% YOY
  • Incheon, So. Korea (ICN): 55.8M passengers; up 212.9% YOY
  • Frankfurt, Germany (FRA): 54.1M passengers; up 20.8% YOY
  • Doha, Qatar (DOH): 45.9M passengers; up 28.5% YOY
  • Madrid, Spain (MAD): 43.8M passengers; up 20.9% YOY

The customers of the Emirates and flydubai in the UAE have been advised that they may experience road delays.

They have been encouraged by the two companies to plan extra travel time to reach the airport and complete their check"‘in formalities ahead of arrival for added convenience.

“Adverse weather conditions are expected starting today. Be sure to check your latest flight status with your airline, factor in extra time to travel to DXB and use the Dubai Metro where possible,” the airport said in an advisory to passengers.

Dubai carrier flydubai has also issued a weather advisory from The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM). A flydubai spokesperson said, “The adverse weather conditions that have been forecasted in the UAE over the next few days may impact our flight schedule at Dubai International (DXB). We are working hard to minimise any disruption to our passengers’ travel schedules and coordinating with all airport parties.”

The airline said it would continue monitoring the weather conditions closely and advised passengers to allow extra time to travel to the airport. Passengers are also advised to check the status of their flight on flydubai.com.

A similar advisory has been published by Emirates.

Travel advisory- adverse weather in the UAE:

  • Passengers are advised to aim to arrive at the airport at least four hours before their flight departs. Check-in closes 60 minutes before the flight departure time.
  • Passengers can save time at the airport by using flydubai's new self-service kiosks in Terminal 2. There, passengers can print their baggage tag, complete online check-in, and then go directly to the dedicated bag drop desk.
  • Passengers are encouraged to regularly check the flight information screens for their departure gate and ensure they are at the gate in plenty of time to board their flight.

Dubai flooding amid atypical heavy rains snarls traffic on UAE roads and airport runways

Updated on: April 16, 2024 / 11:52 AM EDT / CBS/AP

Dubai, United Arab Emirates  — Heavy rains lashed the United Arab Emirates on Tuesday, flooding portions of major highways, leaving vehicles abandoned on roadways across Dubai and grinding traffic at the city-state's huge international airport briefly to a complete halt. Meanwhile, the death toll from separate heavy flooding in neighboring Oman rose to 18, with others still missing as the sultanate prepared for the storm.

The rains began overnight, leaving massive ponds on normally parched streets and airport tarmacs as whipping winds contributed to flight disruptions at Dubai International Airport, the world's busiest for international travel and the home of the long-haul carrier Emirates. The airport said in a series of social media posts that all operations were halted for about 25 minutes on Tuesday afternoon, and that all arrivals would be diverted after that "until the weather conditions improve."

By the evening, more than 4.75 inches of rainfall had soaked the UAE — the typical average for an entire year in the desert nation — with more expected in the coming hours.

Heavy rains over Dubai

Police and emergency personnel drove slowly through the flooded streets, their emergency lights flashing as bolts of lightning flashed across the sky, occasionally touching the tip of the Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest building.

Schools across the UAE, a federation of seven sheikhdoms, largely shut ahead of the storm and government employees were mostly working remotely where possible. Many workers stayed home as well, though some ventured out, with the unfortunate stalling out their vehicles in deeper-than-expected water covering some roads.

Authorities sent tanker trucks out into the streets to pump away the floodwaters, which poured into some homes, forcing people to grab buckets and pails to try to bail out their houses.

Rain is unusual in the UAE, an arid Arabian Peninsula nation, but occurs periodically during the cooler winter months. Many roads and other areas lack drainage given the lack of regular rainfall, which has exacerbated the flooding.

Heavy rains over Dubai

Rain also fell in Bahrain, Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

In neighboring Oman, a sultanate that rests on the eastern edge of the Arabian Peninsula, at least 18 people had been killed in heavy rains in recent days, according to a Tuesday statement from the country's National Committee for Emergency Management. That includes about 10 schoolchildren who were swept away Monday in a vehicle along with an adult.

Climatologists have warned for years that human-driven climate change is fueling more extreme and less predictable weather events across the globe.

Parts of southern Russia and Central Asia have also been dealing for days with unusually damaging amounts of rainfall and snowmelt, forcing tens of thousands of people to evacuate to higher ground and killing more than 60 people in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Airports Council International World released the list of 2023’s busiest airports on Monday.

The top spots this year show how international travel has continued to rebound since the pandemic dip.

“Global air travel in 2023 was chiefly fuelled by the international segment, propelled by several factors. Among these were the anticipated benefits from China’s reopening and a growing inclination towards travel despite macroeconomic conditions,” Luis Felipe de Oliveira, ACI World’s director general, said in a statement . “The rankings highlight the crucial role these transportation hubs play in global connectivity, commerce, and economic development. Airports continue to demonstrate their resilience and adaptability amidst the challenges posed by the ever-evolving landscape of global travel. ACI World remains dedicated to advocating for airports worldwide throughout pivotal stages of policy formulation and to advancing the pursuit of airport excellence.”

Here were the top 10 airports by passenger volume in 2023:

  • Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), maintaining the top spot with 104,635,151 passengers
  • Dubai International Airport (DXB), up from number 5 with 86,994,365 passengers
  • Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), down from number 2 with 81,755,538 passengers
  • London’s Heathrow Airport (LHR), up from number 8 with 79,183,364 passengers
  • Tokyo’s Haneda Airport (HND), up from number 16 with 78,719,302 passengers
  • Denver International Airport (DEN), down from number 3 with 77,837,917 passengers
  • Istanbul Airport (IST), maintaining its spot with 76,027,321 passengers
  • Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), down from number 6 with 75,050,875 passengers
  • Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD), down from number 4 with 73,894,226 passengers
  • New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL), down from number 9 with 72,214,841 passengers

Travelers who want to check out some of the popular destinations these airports serve may be able to take advantage of airline stopover programs to do it. Even if a carrier’s home airport isn’t their final destination, many carriers allow travelers to add extended layovers in those cities.

Dubai flights cancelled and diverted as heavy rainfall sweeps through UAE

Flights in and out of Dubai are being affected by adverse weather conditions around the UAE , leading to delays, diversions and cancellations across 16 April and 17 April.

Thunder, lightning, hail and heavy rainfall have hit Dubai, with schools and government entities instructed to work from home. Citizens have been urged to stay inside where possible and only leave their homes “in cases of extreme necessity”.

The website for Dubai Aiport – one of the world’s busiest airports, which welcomed over 86 million passengers in 2023 – is currently showing that there are at least 20 cancelled flights on 16 April, with dozens more delayed. Affected destinations included cities around India and Pakistan, as well as Saudi Arabia and Manchester.

In addition to Dubai, the surrounding emirates of Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah and Al Ain were all put on alert. Adverse weather hit locations including Abu Dhabi on Monday 15 April. There were additional reports of flooded highways, while in neighbouring Oman, 18 people have been killed due to heavy rains in recent days.

Photos showed a deluge of rainwater on roads around Dubai, with cars struggling to drive through flood highways.

Airlines including Emirates are urging passengers to arrive at the airport up to four hours before their scheduled flight time, while a tweet from Dubai’s Road and Transport Authority read: “If you’re travelling from #DXB today, be sure to allow extra time to get to the airport and use the Dubai Metro, where possible. The metro operating hours have now been extended till 3AM tonight.”

Passengers on flights scheduled to leave Dubai are advised to use the  flydubai  website to track their flight status.

A spokesperson for Dubai Airport told The Independent : “Dubai Airports can confirm that operations continue to be significantly disrupted at Dubai International (DXB) due to heavy rain and flooding on Tuesday, 16 April.  Due to the intense storm, operations were temporarily suspended for 25 minutes this afternoon, but have since recommenced, and are now in recovery mode.

“A total of 21 outbound and 24 inbound flights have been cancelled since 00:02hrs LT this morning, and 3 flights were diverted to other neighbouring airports.

“We urge guests to check directly with their airline to obtain the latest information on the status of their flight, allow significant extra travel time to the airport, and use Dubai Metro for smoother transit, which has extended operating hours until 03:00 hrs LT tonight.”

Advice from the National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority includes recommending “preventive measures for heavy rain and hailstorms to minimise impacts on properties” and “parking vehicles in distant, safe and elevated locations”.
