Gary Moore’s letter to Santa Claus reaped more reward than he could ever have imagined, with his Christmas wish list including a sumptuous victory for Nassalam in the Welsh National, an easy success for Salver in the Finale Hurdle, also at Chepstow, and a most welcome back-to-form performance from Editeur Du Gite in the Grade 2 Desert Orchid Chase at Kempton.

In the past fortnight, the Lower Beeding trainer has notched up eight winners from 27 runners - with a strike rate of 30% - and his prize-money tally has rocketed to £645,341 as a result, while his 2023-24 tally now sits at 29 winners.

After Nassalam’s romp in the Welsh National the next stop is likely to be the Gold Cup at Cheltenham, with Editeur Du Gite hoping to make the line-up for the Champion Chase and Salver one of a strong team for the JCB Triumph Hurdle.

With his horses in resplendent form, Gary kindly talked to Tony Elves of attheraces.com about his team at Cisswood Stables.

gary moore stable tour 2022

Form profile

Winner of two of his 14 starts and currently rated 102 over fences. Returned to winning form in a handicap chase at Taunton (2m2f) in November when scoring by a length and a quarter from Famoso off a mark of 97.

Trainer says

He has been very pleasing so far this season and done nothing wrong. He is obviously a better chaser than he was hurdler. Hopefully he is a progressive sort and, being by Kapgarde, he should be.

All Authorized (FR)

  • 5-y-o; bay gelding
  • Breeding: Authorized (IRE) - Polysheba (FR) (Poliglote (FR))
  • Next Race: Fontwell, 19 Apr 2024 13:30
  • Form: 4P4223

gary moore stable tour 2022

Winner of a bumper at Fontwell in April when beating Mount Fearns by four and a half lengths. Unplaced in similar event at Ascot in November and only fourth, beaten 14½ lengths, to Bucksy Des Epeires on hurdling bow at Lingfield (2m3½f) later that month.

He’s a nice horse but has just had a little bit of a setback, though he will be ready to run in two or three weeks’ time. He was a little bit disappointing last time at Lingfield, but he may have just been in a good race.

Authentic Legacy (GB)

  • 4-y-o; black gelding
  • Breeding: Authorized (IRE) - Forever Present (IRE) (Presenting (UK))
  • Last Race: Chepstow, 13 Apr 2024 12:40
  • Result: 2/7, in rear, mid-division after 4 out, pushed along and headway before 2 out where not fluent, soon ridden, took 2nd jumping last, no impression on winner

gary moore stable tour 2022

Finished fourth, beaten five lengths, to Kel Du Large in a bumper at Cheltenham on New Year's Day.

He made a very promising start in a bumper the other day at Cheltenham. He definitely is a horse for the future, and his main target will be the Goffs bumper at Doncaster. It’s a race for horses that went through the Goffs Sales ring, and we will see how he comes along in the coming weeks to decide if he runs before then or not.

Authorised Speed (FR)

  • 7-y-o; bay gelding
  • Breeding: Authorized (IRE) - Tangaspeed (FR) (Vertical Speed (FR))
  • Last Race: Cheltenham, 12 Mar 2024 14:10
  • Result: Fell/10, held up in mid-division, fell 2nd

gary moore stable tour 2022

Winner of four of his 12 starts, and currently rated 133 over hurdles and 135 over fences. Still going best when falling two out on chasing bow in a novices’ handicap chase won by Persian Time at Ascot (2m1f) in December off a mark of 133. Made mistakes when only third, beaten six lengths, to Scarface in a novices' handicap chase at Plumpton (2m3½f) on Sunday.

He ran at Plumpton and didn’t jump with the fluency we had hoped for. He had jumped brilliantly at Ascot previously until falling two out, and maybe that just dented his confidence a little, but he remains a very good horse and we will find the key to him over fences.

Black Gerry (IRE)

  • 9-y-o; bay gelding
  • Breeding: Westerner (UK) - Triptoshan (IRE) (Anshan (UK))
  • Last Race: Aintree, 11 Apr 2024 16:40
  • Result: 9/15, in touch in mid-division on inside, beaten when mistake 3 out, well held 2 out

gary moore stable tour 2022

Winner of six of his 15 starts and currently rated 137 over fences. Finished fifth, beaten 14½ lengths, to Triple Trade in a handicap chase at Ascot (2m3f) in December off a mark of 140.

Black Gerry had a very good season last season but has paid the price for it with the handicapper. He was down to run at Sandown on Saturday but it was abandoned, so we will look for something else for him, and hopefully he can improve on what he did last time, though I still think he has too much weight.

Botox Has (FR)

  • 8-y-o; bay gelding
  • Breeding: Dream Well (FR) - Bournie (FR) (Kahyasi (IRE))
  • Last Race: Aintree, 13 Apr 2024 15:05
  • Result: PulledUp/10, in rear, ridden and struggling after 4 out, never in contention, well behind when pulled up before 3 out

gary moore stable tour 2022

Winner of six of his 20 starts and currently rated 152 over hurdles. Made a winning reappearance in the Grade 2 bet365 Hurdle at Wetherby (3m) in November when beating Red Risk by a length. Subsequently finished sixth, beaten 11 lengths, to Crambo in the Grade 1 Long Walk Hurdle at Ascot (3m½f) in December.

He has done nothing wrong, and he didn’t get the run of the race in the Long Walk at Ascot but still ran very well. He is a nice horse, and hopefully he will continue to pay his way.

Bridge (GB)

  • 4-y-o; bay gelding
  • Breeding: Golden Horn (UK) - Sadilla (UK) (Foxwedge (IRE))
  • Next Race: Fontwell, 19 Apr 2024 14:30
  • Form: 561337

gary moore stable tour 2022

Winner of one of his four starts over hurdles and currently rated 103. Off the mark with a 14-length success from Ellerton in a maiden hurdle at Fontwell (2m1½f) on Boxing Day.

He nicked a very bad race at Fontwell the other day but couldn’t have done it any easier. Hopefully he is improving - he was far too keen before and, touch wood, he jumps very well and likes soft ground, which most of those Golden Horn's do. He is a good, fun horse.

Cloud Dancer (IRE)

  • 5-y-o; grey gelding
  • Breeding: Jukebox Jury (IRE) - Donna Graciosa (GER) (Samum (GER))
  • Next Race: Wincanton, 21 Apr 2024 13:57
  • Form: 71-332

gary moore stable tour 2022

Winner of one of his three starts and currently rated 121 over hurdles. Finished third, beaten two and three quarter lengths, to Doddiethegreat in an introductory hurdle at Ascot (1m7½f) on his reappearance in November.

He had a curb appear on his hock after running a great race first time out this year at Ascot, and hopefully he will be out in the next fortnight.

Editeur Du Gite (FR)

  • 10-y-o; bay gelding
  • Breeding: Saddex (UK) - Malaga De St Sulpice (FR) (Saint Cyrien (FR))
  • Last Race: Cheltenham, 27 Jan 2024 14:25
  • Result: 5/5, led, bad mistake and headed 3rd, recovered and led narrowly before 5th, headed before 10th, pushed along and dropped away after 3 out, soon tailed off

gary moore stable tour 2022

Winner of eight of his 23 starts and currently rated 162 over fences. Returned to winning form in the Grade 2 Desert Orchid Handicap Chase at Kempton (2m) over Christmas when scoring by three lengths from Nube Negra off a mark of 159.

He has come back out of the Desert Orchid very well and he has two or three targets building up to Cheltenham, so we will take things from there.

Goshen (FR)

  • Breeding: Authorized (IRE) - Hyde (FR) (Poliglote (UK))
  • Last Race: Exeter, 08 Mar 2024 15:10
  • Result: Won/4, jumped left at times, led until after 8th, rallied from 2 out, not fluent last, hung left flat, led close home

gary moore stable tour 2022

Winner of 10 of his 33 starts and currently rated 147 over hurdles. Finished ninth, beaten 21 lengths, to Crambo in the Grade 1 Long Walk Hurdle at Ascot (3m½f) on latest start in December.

He hasn’t run a bad race this season, but he hasn’t been doing it like he used to. We have tried a few different things, but he is a difficult one to place now.

Hansard (IRE)

  • Breeding: The Gurkha (IRE) - Quiet Down (USA) (Quiet American (USA))
  • Last Race: Ascot, 23 Dec 2023 15:35
  • Result: 5/9, in touch in rear, ridden and headway approaching 2 out, stayed on one pace

gary moore stable tour 2022

Winner of four of his 11 starts and currently rated 142 over hurdles. Scored by three quarters of a length from Bad in the Gerry Feilden Hurdle at Newbury (2m½f) in December off a mark of 138, and far from disgraced in the Grade 3 Betfair Exchange Trophy at Ascot (1m7½f) later that month when fifth, beaten three and a quarter lengths, to Luccia off his current mark.

Things didn’t work out as we hoped at Ascot the other day in the Gerry Feilden, and whether he runs on Winter Million Day at Lingfield or whether we go straight for the Betfair Hurdle at Newbury, I am not sure - but that will be his ultimate target.

Hermino Aa (FR)

  • Breeding: Sinndar (IRE) - Acqua Luna (FR) (Libourne (UK))
  • Last Race: Newbury, 22 Mar 2024 16:08
  • Result: 3/12, close up, hit 4th, pushed along and every chance from 2 out, ridden and ran on, lost 2nd close home

gary moore stable tour 2022

Winner of two of his eight starts and currently rated 129 over hurdles. Finished third, beaten four and a half lengths, to White Rhino in a handicap hurdle at Cheltenham (3m) in December off his current mark.

He didn’t really take to chasing and it was a much better effort over hurdles at Cheltenham the other day. Hopefully he can build on that effort.

He's A Latchico (IRE)

  • Breeding: Fast Company (IRE) - Daliana (UK) (Verglas (IRE))
  • Last Race: Fontwell, 28 Mar 2024 15:07
  • Result: 3/5, in rear, struggling after 5th, went 3rd from 3 out, well held by winner after 2 out

gary moore stable tour 2022

Winner of six of his 19 starts and currently rated 103 over hurdles and 86 on the Flat. Finished runner-up, beaten two lengths, to Classic Anthem in a novices’ handicap hurdle at Sandown (2m) in December off a mark of 101.

He has done very well, and he is a horse who can run under both codes. He did well on the Flat last season, and he has done pretty well over hurdles as well. He is a very genuine horse who runs his heart out for you.

Hudson De Grugy (FR)

  • Breeding: Falco (USA) - Queen De Grugy (FR) (April Night (FR))
  • Next Race: Fontwell, 19 Apr 2024 14:00
  • Form: 31P-3F3

gary moore stable tour 2022

Winner of six of his 19 starts and currently rated 123 over fences. Finished third, beaten 10 lengths, to Mount Tempest in a handicap chase at Sandown (1m7½f) in December off a mark of 124.

He ran very well first time out at Sandown, and we were hoping for another good run from him there on Saturday before it was abandoned. We will have to find something else for him now, but he is in great form.

Issar D'airy (FR)

  • Breeding: Sinndar (IRE) - Bassika D'airy (FR) (Passing Sale (FR))
  • Next Race: Kempton, 22 Apr 2024 18:00
  • Form: P1-3115

gary moore stable tour 2022

Winner of three of his 12 starts and currently rated 120 over fences. Looked much improved on debut over fences at Newbury (2m½f) at the end of December when beating Martator by four and a quarter lengths off a mark of 112.

He won well first time over fences at Newbury the other day, and I couldn’t have been more pleased with him. The handicapper has put him up 8lb, which isn’t the end of the world. He is a horse we like, and hopefully he can win again. When we bought him we always thought he was going to make into a chaser, and he looked good the other day.

Junkanoo (GB)

  • Breeding: Epaulette (AUS) - Bahamian Music (IRE) (Bahamian Bounty (UK))
  • Next Race: Kempton, 22 Apr 2024 19:00
  • Form: 2221P

gary moore stable tour 2022

Winner of three of his 22 starts and currently rated 122 over hurdles and 79 on the Flat. Has finished runner-up in both hurdle starts, beaten two lengths by Doddiethegreat at Ascot (1m7½f) in November and two lengths by Goodwin in a novices’ event at Plumpton (2m) in December.

He went jumping late in life and ran a very good race at Ascot first time before probably bumping into a fair horse at Plumpton. He will win in turn, but he won’t get any further than two miles.

Kalif D'airy (FR)

  • Breeding: Authorized (IRE) - Ulifa D'airy (FR) (Anzillero (GER))
  • Last Race: Hereford, 25 Feb 2024 14:40
  • Result: 3/10, prominent, ridden and lost 2nd before last, edged left and held in 3rd flat, one pace

gary moore stable tour 2022

Finished ninth, beaten 14 lengths, to Kel Du Large in a bumper at Cheltenham (1m6f) on New Year’s Day.

He ran quite well in a bumper at Cheltenham on New Year’s Day, and hopefully is a horse for the future.

Kotmask (FR)

  • 6-y-o; chestnut gelding
  • Breeding: Masked Marvel (UK) - Kotkiline (FR) (Martaline (UK))
  • Last Race: Plumpton, 01 Apr 2024 14:25
  • Result: 3/7, held up in rear, bad mistake 9th, ridden and no impression before 2 out, kept on approaching last, stayed on into 3rd run-in, nearest finish

gary moore stable tour 2022

Winner of three of his 13 starts and currently rated 120 over fences. Finished fourth, beaten five and three quarter lengths, to Blow Your Wad in a novices' handicap chase at Kempton (2m4½f) in December off a mark of 121.

He is a nice horse who has done well since going over fences. He was a little unlucky the other day at Kempton, but hopefully he can improve on that next time. Two miles to two and a half miles comes all the same to him.
  • 11-y-o; bay gelding
  • Breeding: Midnight Legend (UK) - Gaspaisie (FR) (Beyssac (FR))
  • Next Race: Kempton, 22 Apr 2024 18:30
  • Form: 3-48175

gary moore stable tour 2022

Winner of seven of his 32 starts and currently rated 132 over fences. Finished eighth of 10, beaten 24 lengths, to Victtorino in a Grade 3 Handicap Chase at Ascot (3m) in December off a mark of 133.

He was a bit unlucky the other day at Ascot after getting handy too early. He was another due to run at Sandown on Saturday, so we will have to find something else for him.

Le Patron (FR)

  • Breeding: Balko (FR) - La Loute (FR) (Saint Des Saints (FR))
  • Last Race: Cheltenham, 14 Mar 2024 13:30
  • Result: PulledUp/11, held up, mistake 7 out, weakened 5 out, pulled up before next

gary moore stable tour 2022

Winner of four of his 12 starts and currently rated 150 over fences. Much improved since sent chasing and unbeaten in three starts. Scored by 20 lengths from Proper Twelve in a novices’ handicap chase at Fontwell (2m3½f) in October off a mark of 113, and followed up with a 10-length defeat of Blow Your Wad in a similar event at Sandown (2m4f) in November off a mark of 122. Far surpassed those efforts when completing the hat-trick with a length-and-a-quarter defeat of Colonel Harry in the Grade 1 Henry VIII Novices’ Chase at Sandown (1m7½f) in December.

He has done nothing wrong in his three chases and could do nothing more than win. He was pretty impressive last time in the Henry VIII Novices’ Chase at Sandown, and he won’t run until February in the Scilly Isles.

Mark Of Gold (GB)

  • Breeding: Golden Horn (UK) - Polly's Mark (IRE) (Mark of Esteem (IRE))
  • Next Race: Chester, 10 May 2024 15:45
  • Form: 10466/1-

gary moore stable tour 2022

Winner of nine of his 25 starts and currently rated 136 over hurdles. Finished fourth, beaten 32 lengths, to Mahons Glory in a handicap hurdle at Kempton (2m5f) on Boxing Day off a mark of 138.

He had a good season last year and is kind of paying for it now. Hopefully he will run in the Lanzarote Hurdle at Kempton - that is the plan for him.

Nassalam (FR)

  • 7-y-o; chestnut gelding
  • Breeding: Dream Well (FR) - Ramina (GER) (Shirocco (GER))
  • Next Race: Sandown, 27 Apr 2024 15:35
  • Form: 07-411P

gary moore stable tour 2022

Winner of seven of his 19 starts and currently rated 161 over fences. Appears to have come of age this season and returned to winning form with an impressive five-and-a-half-length success from Wayfinder in the Coral Welsh National Trial Handicap at Chepstow (2m7½f) in December off a mark of 141, before returning to the same course for the Coral Welsh National (3m6½f) at the end of the month to follow up under a 4lb penalty with a 34-length victory from Iron Bridge.

It speaks for itself, but he has been a revelation this season and long may it continue. He has big targets ahead of him now, and whether he can fulfil them we don’t really know. It's not going to be easy. The ground and the blinkers have been the making of him, and hopefully he can continue to improve. He is in both the Cheltenham Gold Cup and Grand National, and he won’t run before then.

Pyrotechnic (FR)

  • Breeding: Nathaniel (IRE) - Lightupthenight (UK) (Dutch Art (UK))
  • Last Race: Newbury, 20 Dec 2023 12:50
  • Result: 12/18, led, went clear from 4th, hit 4 out, reduced lead before 2 out, where headed, soon weakened

gary moore stable tour 2022

No wins from three starts over hurdles and currently rated 108. Raced too freely in the lead when 12th, beaten 35 lengths, to Fortunate Man in a maiden hurdle at Newbury (2m½f) in December.

He is a horse who has sort of disappointed, and you won’t see him for a while. He came from France late in the year and we will give him a break now. They went too fast last time out.

Royal Way (FR)

  • Breeding: Galiway (UK) - Belle Et Royale (FR) (Astronomer Royal (USA))
  • Last Race: Ascot, 24 Mar 2024 14:45
  • Result: Won/9, chased leader, led narrowly 2 out and pressed, edged right and hampered rival run-in, stayed on gamely to assert towards finish

gary moore stable tour 2022

Winner of one of his three starts over hurdles and currently rated 108. Finished runner-up, beaten 14 lengths, to Sir Gino in a juvenile hurdle at Kempton (2m) over Christmas. Had little trouble going one better at Ludlow (2m) last Friday when making all for an easy 17-length success from River Gold.

He is a nice horse that we like, and he probably bumped into the best juvenile this year, apart from Burdett Road, when second to Sir Gino at Kempton over Christmas. He proved the point when hacking up at Ludlow last Friday, and hopefully he can continue to thrive.

Saligo Bay (IRE)

  • Breeding: New Bay (UK) - Glorification (UK) (Champs Elysees (UK))
  • Last Race: Newbury, 22 Mar 2024 15:33
  • Result: 7/14, in rear, pushed along 3 out, ridden and some headway approaching last, never nearer

gary moore stable tour 2022

Winner of five of his 28 starts and currently rated 107 over hurdles. Scored by 20 lengths from Canford Light in a selling hurdle at Plumpton (2m) in November. Fell at the second when favourite for a handicap hurdle at Plumpton (2m) on Sunday.

He is a good, fun little horse, but he fell for the first time when favourite for a handicap hurdle at Plumpton on Sunday. He had scored well in a seller at Plumpton previously, and we had just waited for Sunday’s race.

Salver (FR)

  • Breeding: Motivator (UK) - Salve Evita (UK) (Monsun (GER))
  • Last Race: Cheltenham, 15 Mar 2024 13:30
  • Result: 3/12, prominent, led 3 out and soon pressed, ridden and headed approaching last, kept on one pace

gary moore stable tour 2022

Winner of his three starts over hurdles and currently rated 128. Completed a hat-trick when scoring by 21 lengths from Balbao in the Grade 2 Coral Finale Juvenile Hurdle at Chepstow (2m) in December.

He is a lovely horse that I really like and have a lot of time for. He has done nothing wrong and is a big horse who can certainly improve. I am not going to rush him this year, and he doesn’t run now until the Victor Ludorum.

Soigneux Bell (FR)

  • Breeding: Muhtathir (UK) - Marble Game (FR) (Orpen (USA))
  • Last Race: Huntingdon, 12 Jan 2024 14:50
  • Result: 5/6, in touch behind leaders, closed 4th, led before 3 out, headed before short of room and mistake 2 out, weakened flat

gary moore stable tour 2022

Winner of one of his three starts over hurdles and currently rated 112. Off the mark at Fontwell (2m1½f) in December when beating Spiced Rum by 11 lengths.

He is another nice horse who won really well at Fontwell the other day, but what he beat I don’t really know. He probably runs in the Chatteris Fen at Huntingdon.

Spirit D'aunou (FR)

  • Breeding: Triple Threat (FR) - Miss Wind (FR) (Sri Pekan (USA))
  • Last Race: Aintree, 12 Apr 2024 14:20
  • Result: 5/19, held up in mid-division, not fluent 1st, pushed along 3 out, switched right next, plugged on one pace from last

gary moore stable tour 2022

Winner of five of his seven starts and currently rated 139 over hurdles. Returned to winning form in a handicap hurdle at Sandown (2m) in December when beating Bucksy Des Epeires by three and a half lengths off a mark of 129.

He is another nice horse who has done nothing wrong, and was another due to go to Sandown on Saturday. Hopefully he can continue to improve, and I am very pleased with him.

Teddy Blue (GER)

  • Breeding: Sea The Moon (GER) - Tickle Me Blue (GER) (Iffraaj (GER))
  • Next Race: Cheltenham, 17 Apr 2024 14:05
  • Form: U99647

gary moore stable tour 2022

Winner of three of his 18 starts and currently rated 132 over hurdles. Came close to victory earlier this season when runner-up, beaten a length and a quarter, to Black Poppy in the Grade 3 Swinton Handicap Hurdle at Haydock (1m7½f) in May off his current mark.

He hasn’t quite found his form this season but, when the ground gets a bit better, hopefully he will come to himself. He hasn’t been firing on all cylinders unfortunately, but he might be better with some sun on his back.

Through The Ages (GB)

  • Breeding: Golden Horn (UK) - Rumh (GER) (Monsun (GER))
  • Next Race: Fontwell, 19 Apr 2024 15:00

gary moore stable tour 2022

Winner of two of his three starts over hurdles. Scored by 15 lengths from Royal Deeside in a juvenile hurdle at Newbury (2m½f) in December, and followed up with a four-and-three-quarter-length victory from Nachgeist in a similar event at Plumpton (2m) on Sunday.

He is another juvenile that we like a lot. He was disappointing me before getting it right at Newbury, and then showed that was no fluke by following up at Plumpton on Sunday. Hopefully he can continue on an upward curve - he is certainly bred to do so.

Time To Dazzle (IRE)

  • Breeding: Zambezi Sun (UK) - Born To Dazzle (IRE) (Alderbrook (UK))
  • Last Race: Taunton, 26 Mar 2024 14:20
  • Result: PulledUp/13, led, mistake 5th, headed 4 out, pulled up 2 out

gary moore stable tour 2022

No wins from four starts and currently rated 95. Finished runner-up, beaten a length, to Present Fair in a novices’ handicap hurdle at Uttoxeter (2m) in December off a mark of 94.

He ran well at Uttoxeter the other day when finishing second and that is as good as he is, but hopefully we can find races for him and he will be a better horse when he goes chasing.

Twenty Twenty (IRE)

  • Breeding: Henrythenavigator (USA) - Distinctive Look (IRE) (Danehill (USA))
  • Next Race: Wincanton, 21 Apr 2024 15:02
  • Form: PP013P

gary moore stable tour 2022

Winner of six of his 37 starts and currently rated 100 over fences. Left his previous form this season behind when beating Ya Know Yaseff by three and a quarter lengths in a handicap chase at Wincanton (3m1f) in December off a mark of 95.

He won well the other day when given a good ride to win. He is a horse for low-grade races.

Zhiguli (IRE)

  • Breeding: Flemensfirth (USA) - Grangeclare Flight (IRE) (Old Vic (UK))
  • Last Race: Haydock, 17 Feb 2024 13:37
  • Result: 4/6, held up behind leaders, not fluent 8th, effort 4 out, mistake 3 out, jumped right and no extra from 2 out, lost 3rd last

gary moore stable tour 2022

Winner of five of his 24 starts and currently rated 124 over fences. Finished runner-up, beaten six and a half lengths, to Quel Destin in a handicap chase at Fontwell (2m5½f) in December off a mark of 126.

He has been a little disappointing this season and I don’t know why. Hopefully he will get back on track soon, but he isn’t as bad as his form might suggest.

Heart of the South Racing

Come racing as an owner! Call us on 01403 891403 Free Newsletter Signup

Everyone who follows racing in Sussex knows about the Moore family. Son of Brighton trainer and car dealer Charlie Moore, Gary is the one of the most successful dual purpose trainers in the country.

Family affair

Ably assisted by wife Jayne (herself formerly a successful amateur jockey) and offspring Jamie, Josh and Hayley who help at the yard daily, Gary runs the hardest working team around. He produced miraculous results training from a home built yard opposite Brighton Racecourse for several years and in 2007 he started training from Cisswood Racing Stables near Horsham, which is now his main yard. This yard offers the style and facilities that his hard work deserves, with top-class training facilities and stabling for 100 racehorses set in 180 acres of beautiful countryside and woodland. The expanse of land enables us to turnout horses to grass daily when required.

Sire on Fire!

Gary has always been well known for his success in the big handicap hurdles and is also one of the country’s leading all weather trainers. However this all changed, when the world class Sire De Grugy came along! His best horse without question, this leading 2-mile chasing sensation has been a revelation over the last few seasons winning: the Grade 1 Tingle Creek Chase twice, Grade 2 Desert Orchid Chase, Grade 1 Clarence House Chase, Grade 1 Queen Mother Champion Chase and the Grade 1 Celebration Chase twice.

Currently the yard’s stable star is 5yo Goshen who is a 7-time winner and has provided some great days out at the races for the team and his Owners.

Goshen won 3 races on the flat in an impressive fashion before winning his next 3 over hurdles – combined pulling away by 96 lengths clear – before heading to the Cheltenham Festival! He looked set to be an imposing winner of the Grade 1 JCB Triumph Hurdle before devastatingly unseating at the last hurdle! It was great to see him bounce back at Wincanton however to win the Grade 2 Betway Kingwell Hurdle and we are sure he will bounce back to winning ways again this season for connections

Gary’s other high profile success stories include the phenomenal Ar Mad who won the Grade 1 Racing Post Henry VIII Novices’ Chase and the Grade 2 Wayward Lad Novices’ Chase, Antony the winner of the Grade 3 Sodexo Gold Cup in 2016, Grade 3 winner Ubak,  Bergo who won the Queen Alexandra Stakes at Royal Ascot, Dutch Masterpiece who won the Group 2 Flying Five Stakes at Curragh, and Mourilyan who was third in the Melbourne Cup. Rarely a meeting at Fontwell or Plumpton goes by without a Gary Moore trained winner and year in, year out he is leading trainer at these tracks.

Made to feel welcome

Owners with Gary are always welcome at the yard to watch their horses work, or simply to give them a cuddle and a carrot. Gary, Jayne, Jamie, Josh & Hayley are always about for a chat and offer a fascinating insight into how a big racing stable operates.

As his regular television interviews convey, Gary Moore is a real character and some of his training methods are steeped in tradition too (wait to you see the cement mixer that mixes up all the horse feed!) Owners can often find the ‘hands on’ Gary riding out, mucking out or grooming. We certainly wouldn’t have it any other way.

Gary Moore: ‘When the time comes I’ll disappear into the background’

One of the most successful dual-purpose trainers in the country is looking to the future with son Josh being primed to take over at Cisswood Racing Stables

The 2021-22 jumps season was Gary Moore’s most successful in his 30 years as a trainer, yielding 91 winners as he broke the £1 million barrier for the first time. At what is proving a difficult time for so many in the industry, his stables are full, as they usually are.

He has long been regarded as one of Britain’s top dual-purpose trainers, perhaps the best of all, and racing is all he has known, having grown up the son of a trainer and gone on to be a hard-as-nails jump jockey before switching to training.

Moore has great owners as well as loyal and hard-working staff, while he probably has better horses than ever at his recently upgraded premises. So why would he be talking about stopping?

The familiar complaints of too much racing, rising costs and excessive red tape all get a good airing in the course of a comfortable hour or so in the office of his Cisswood Racing Stables near Horsham, where wife Jayne joins in from time to time while working away at the computer her husband so actively avoids.

However, such issues have little or nothing to do with Moore’s plans. There is a much, much happier reason for Moore being keen to see his name come off the licence sooner rather than later, and it’s one that the couple could not have dared even contemplate just a few months ago, when the life of their youngest child, the fourth in one of racing’s most famous dynasties, hung in the balance.

“Josh will be taking over here,” confirms Moore, who is not interested in going down the joint licence road favoured by other father-and-son combinations like the Coles, Crisfords and Gosdens.

He says: “Training is a young man’s game now and Josh will be absolutely brilliant at it. He’s very switched on and he’s better with staff than I am. He’s a better talker than me too, and owners love him. He’ll get some help too I should think from Ryan, who I hope will get him a few bigger-name owners. Ryan’s input could be unbelievable.

“I’ll stay here and I’ll do anything Josh asks me to do. All I’ll want to do is to work for Josh and do whatever he wants. In a perfect world I’d build a bungalow on the premises where we’ve currently got an aircraft hangar, which I inherited when I took over the place. Josh could then move into our house.”

All that is for the future, although hopefully the not-too-distant future. In the meantime, while he is happy to contemplate taking a back seat, Moore senior is equally at ease reflecting on his time as a trainer and the state of racing.

Moore initially trained in Epsom, first in a property owned by owner Jeff Daniels and then, when he outgrew it, at John Sutcliffe’s former stables, but he also had a lengthy period based at his father Charlie’s former stables close to Brighton racecourse before buying Cisswood from Charles Cyzer.

He explains: “I’ve never regretted buying this place. It’s one of the best things I’ve done in my life. Maybe I should have bought John Sutcliffe’s place when I was training there in the early days, but the trouble with Epsom is it’s too close to London and so prices are extortionate, and also there wasn’t the staff accommodation I’d need.

“We had better horses last season, but also they stayed healthy and sound for longer, and I think they were fitter too”

“We’ve done a lot of work here, building another 60 boxes, changing both gallops over to woodchip, installing a two-and-a-half furlong round canter, putting in an all-weather schooling ground, and more recently adding a deep sand gallop.

“The deep sand gallop is [based] on the Willie Mullins principle, but Willie’s is in a circle and mine’s up a hill. I tried mine in a circle, but it didn’t really work, so we took it up and put woodchip back down, then made a new deep sand gallop up a hill.

“I think we are already seeing the benefits of that from a fitness point of view. You can go slower and over not quite so far, so there’s not so much stress on them, yet you still get the same benefits as they have to work harder in it. We had better horses last season and there was a great team effort behind them, but also they stayed healthy and sound for longer, and I think they were fitter too.”

Attracting owners seldom seems to have been a problem for Moore, who has always been recognised as a trainer who knows the time of day, and he hopes that the cost-of-living crisis will not prove an issue for most of them. Many prefer jumping to the Flat, although that might change when his son takes over.

He says: “If I wanted to and had the staff and the boxes, I could have 150 horses here, but I’m happy with the 110 that I can house. I’m not exactly turning them away though, or at least not often. I’m conscious that there’s more emphasis here now on jumps than the Flat, but I expect that will change when Josh is in charge.

“It’s just happened, rather than there having been any policy change. It’s in large part down to the owners I train for, but also because I’ve had two very, very good jump jockeys working for me, and I felt I had to support them as best I could.

“Also, I find I can compete at a higher level jumping with the sort of horses my owners are prepared to buy than I can on the Flat, where you need Arab owners or EuroMillions winners to buy the ammunition for the top races.

“I’ve got wealthy owners – anybody who has racehorses has got to be quite wealthy in this day and age – and I was able to buy a couple of yearlings at Goffs and had orders for Tattersalls Book 2, but I didn’t even need to think about looking at Book 1 as that’s a completely different level.”

“We haven’t got to the stage where we are doing the sums and working out exactly how much costs have gone up, but I can tell you for example that bales of hay – big ones admittedly – are now £130 a time, which is horrendous, and shavings are £9 a bale. I could once probably have bought a ton of hay for what a bale is costing me now, and shavings used to be a fiver a bale.

“The nuts we buy are extortionately priced now too. The war in Ukraine is a big factor, as that’s where the wheat comes from, but we’ve had three price rises in a year. I could find cheaper feed, but as I said, I won’t cut corners. They apologised for the latest price rise and offered us some free merchandise, but horses can’t eat baseball caps, can they?”

Like many, Moore, who masterminded the career of outstanding two-mile chaser Sire De Grugy, winner of five Grade 1s, including the Queen Mother Champion Chase, all under son Jamie, believes that the issues with poor prize-money and falling field sizes are not unconnected.

He says: “There’s obviously too much racing. They keep going on about field sizes, but the solution is so simple that even an idiot like me can work it out. They had a solution but then they didn’t go with it.

“We are going to look at opportunities in France more this winter, but the paperwork for that is horrendous since Brexit”

“Racing dilutes the prize-money so much and there aren’t enough horses to go around, especially on the Flat. We need many fewer meetings, and we shouldn’t be letting the racecourses themselves dictate to us so that they can cash in on the media rights money. It’s got to be greed.”

He continues: “Prize-money is never enough, but that’s not going to change. We are going to look at opportunities in France more this winter, but the paperwork for that is horrendous since Brexit.

“Last season Larry won a £100,000 race at Ascot, which set him up for the season, but generally the prize-money is very poor. Porticello didn’t win a fortune, and even Goshen, who was the best juvenile hurdler of his year, won pitiful amounts.

“Luckily most of my owners are in it for fun. If you are in it for prize-money, you shouldn’t be in it, not in this country anyway. I’ve got a broad spread of them too. It’s no good being too dependent on one owner.”

Red tape, and particularly the need for so much to be done online well in advance that could once have been attended to on course, is among other frustrations. So, too, is the ever-increasing export abroad of so many of the more desirable types at the horses-in-training sales.

But in a year or two it is unlikely to be his problem.

New challenge excites Josh Josh Moore was surprised when he was sent a renewal notice for his jockey’s licence while he was recovering from his injuries and the subsequent fat embolism that nearly killed him.

Josh Moore is looking forward to a new chapter in his life | Photo: Bill Selwyn

He knows how lucky he is to simply be alive, let alone fit and well enough again to be able to enjoy being home again with partner Phoebe and two-year-old son Freddie, not to mention looking forward to another exciting stage in his career, even if it is coming rather sooner than he’d have preferred. Almost unbelievably, he is even back riding out two lots a day.

The initial injury was incurred at Haydock in April on Gleno, a yard favourite and a supposedly safe-as-houses jumper. The potentially deadly fat embolism emerged a little later and it was so serious that at times during his three months in hospital the whole of racing, not just his own family, feared the worst.

His recovery has been remarkable and bears testament not only to the skill and care of the medical staff who attended to him in successive institutions, but also to the dogged persistence of his mother Jayne, who read voraciously on the subject and was convinced she recognised a rare condition which even experienced consultants had not previously come across first-hand.

“I’ll miss the riding obviously, but I’ve always planned to train one day and I did the first two trainer modules quite a while ago”

Moore says: “I got lucky. My back is sore still, but otherwise I feel fit and well, although I couldn’t come back race-riding. My back has been opened twice in the last year and my leg was opened too. The fat embolism from the leg injury affected my brain, and although it’s all right now, I’m not sure I’d be able to pass a concussion test again.

“I’ll miss the riding obviously, but I’ve always planned to train one day and I did the first two trainer’s modules quite a while ago, when I was struggling with my shoulders and thought I’d better start thinking about what I’d do next. It’s always been a big interest of mine and I’m booked for the third and last module this month.”

Moore has learned most of what he knows about training from his father – there can be few better from whom to receive an education. However, he has kept his eyes and ears open wherever he has been and will no doubt have a few ideas of his own. How soon he gets to put them into practice remains to be seen, but you can be sure he will be ready when the time comes.

He explains: “I rode out for Jonjo O’Neill for about a year, and more recently for Chris Gordon, and I also used to go down to Emma Lavelle’s when I was a seven-pound claimer. Wherever I’ve been I’ve paid attention to how things are done.”

The younger man agreed with his father that a gradual change in emphasis back in favour of the Flat might be on the cards. “The Flat is of massive interest because in today’s world I think it provides a far better business model to jumpers,” Moore says. “I love jump racing of course, and we have a lot of successful jumps horses, so obviously I’ll want to keep going with them.

“I probably know more about jumping but I do love the Flat and luckily in Ryan I’ve got a brother who knows a lot more about it than I do.”

Moore set for Macau return

Edward Sadler

Superstar jockey-turned-trainer Gary Moore has called time on his training career in Australia and will return to Macau to rejoin the training ranks at Taipa Racecourse.

Moore saddled up his final runners in Australia on June 16 and cited several factors when explaining his decision.

Chief among them were his desire to once again live in Asia, the unsuccessful training partnership he had formed with his brother John, the loss of significant owner Domeland due to a change in their training strategy and the COVID-enforced travel restrictions that prevented him from networking with his clients.

A recent trip to Macau provided further inspiration for him to return to the city where he was crowned champion trainer eight times.

"I was up there about a month ago and I got a really great welcome, like a welcome home!" Moore said.

"That spurred me on to speed things up to be able to return to Macau to train."

After training in Sydney for the past eight years, Moore has had several highlights to celebrate throughout that time.

"Naturally, you've got to say, winning a Group 1 in Australia with Takedown in Perth," Moore said as he reflected on those highlights.

Moore, whose father George was a legendary jockey and trainer, has also had close access to Australia's top trainer during his time based at Rosehill.

"I think that I've trained next to the best trainer in the world in Chris Waller, excluding my father, of course!" Moore said.

"He's a workaholic; like he's pointed out, he's got very good people around him, which is probably half the battle to be able to accomplish what he has done.

"He's a fantastic trainer, what he's been able to do with Nature Strip, I thought he had terrific muscle definition when he was walking around the enclosure at Ascot. To take that horse over there and win on the world stage, just shows what a great trainer he is."

As Moore prepares for the latest chapter in a career which has seen him win a Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe and claim seven Hong Kong premierships as a jockey, he aims to add to his premiership tally in Macau, win that elusive Macau Derby and plunder one of Hong Kong's Stakes races with a horse from his Macau stable.

The 70-year-old knows that it won't be easy for him, but he can draw upon his experience for some confidence in what lies ahead.

"It's going to be a challenge, it's going to take a while, it's going to take a bit to get going again," Moore said.

"It reminds me very much of when I trained in Sydney the first time around, after I'd been a jockey and retired in 1997 and Dad said, 'They'll eat you alive'. They sort of did, but I was a quick learner!"

Moore plans on targeting the Magic Millions Gold Coast 2YOs in Training Sale in October, the sale at which he purchased his best Macau horse Viva Pronto, as he endeavours to build up his new stable.

He hopes that the exploits of himself and other Australians involved in the Macau racing industry can be showcased in his homeland too.

Over the years, Australian trainers like Mick Kent and Barry Baldwin have called Macau home, while elite riders like Glen Boss, Steven Arnold and Noel Callow have all plied their trade in the city famous for its massive casinos.

Australia has also produced a large number of horses who have made their way over to Macau to race.

"I just don't understand how Macau racing is not beamed into Australia, like Singapore and Malaysia," Moore said.

"If you think of the number of Australians who are training or have ridden in Macau, if you're going to be sitting in a pub, switching (the television) to Macau racing, the punters here in Australia will know who the participants are."

Another hope for Moore is that the travel and quarantine situation in Macau improves so that owners can gain the full experience of racing their horses in the jurisdiction.

Moore will join his son Nicholas and brother-in-law Peter Leyshan as part of the Macau training fraternity upon his return there for the 2022/23 racing season.

Gary Moore: the last great guitar hero

Gary Moore has delighted entire generations with his passionate guitar playing driving rock with Thin Lizzy and fusion with Colosseum II in the seventies, heavy metal in the eighties and blues rock in the nineties - Moore has always been at the forefront of the world's stages.

But featuring exclusive interviews with close family, friends and musicians, acclaimed rock biographer Harry Shapiro takes the reader on an exciting journey which begins with Gary as a guitar prodigy in war torn Ireland and on through the many highs and lows that Gary endured as he carved his own place in rock history.

Despite his early death in 2011, Gary Moore still has legions of devoted fans across the world who will be enthralled by this unique insight into the life of a guitar genius who did it his way and whose music lives on.

»The range of his talents stretched far beyond mainstream hard rock.«

The Guardian »He initiated the European blues revival and released trend-setting albums.«
