Travel Insurance Review- Freestyle Luxe from CSA Travel Protection

January 19, 2007 By Damian Tysdal

CSA makes travel insurance easier by offering fewer options

CSA Travel Protection is a very reputable company selling travel insurance. They recently consolidated several different policy choices into two, simpler package plans: Freestyle and Freestyle Luxe . Freestyle is their basic plan which offers great overall coverage for most travelers. Freestyle Luxe is an upgraded plan that offers higher coverage amounts and a couple extra benefits.

“Just give us the best plan”

CSA made the choices simpler for travelers seeking trip insurance. They found many travelers simply saying, “just give us the best plan”, and they answered by putting together a comprehensive plan called Freestyle , and an upgrade plan called Freestyle Luxe .

Just like CSA’s Freestyle plan, the Freestyle Luxe travel policy includes coverage for:

  • trip cancellation
  • trip interruption
  • travel delay
  • baggage loss and delay
  • medical expense/emergency assistance
  • emergency medical evacuation

In addition, Freestyle Luxe provides these policy upgrades

  • higher baggage coverage (from $1,000 to $1,500)
  • higher baggage delay coverage ($200 to $500)
  • higher medical expense coverage ($50,000 to $250,000)
  • higher medical evacuation coverage ($250,000 to $1,000,000)
  • higher collision damage waiver coverage ($25,000 to $50,000)
  • higher AD&D flight only ($100,000 to $200,000)
  • AD&D travel accident $50,000
  • pre-existing condition coverage
  • supplier bankruptcy and default coverage

Freestyle Luxe gives travelers higher levels of coverage and additional benefits

The upgrade to Freestyle Luxe gives travelers significantly higher coverage amounts in 6 areas: baggage, baggage delay, medical expenses, medical evacuation, rental collision damage waiver, and flight AD&D. The policy also adds coverage for travel accident AD&D, pre-existing medical conditions, and supplier bankruptcy or default.

Online quotes and purchasing made easy

Travelers can easily get quotes for CSA Travel Protection products at csatravelprotection.com , and even buy their policy online using a credit card. They offer both Freestyle and Freestyle Luxe .

Use a comparison site to shop around

Another option is to use a comparison site(see  How to Compare Quotes with a Travel Insurance Comparison Site ), where you can get a quote for CSA products and compare them side-by-side with other similar plans. This is the best way to find the right plan and get the best prices. The policy costs the same whether you buy from a comparison site or directly from the carrier.

How To Correctly Quote a Travel Insurance Plan

by Steve Dasseos on February 27, 2008

Do you match price for the same coverage offered at a better price elsewhere? I purchased a policy from you last night. Tonight I stumbled on another website and put in the same trip and it gave me a quote for about $45 less – for the same plan. Madeline

Hi Madeline, All travel insurance plans are the same cost for the same plan no matter where you buy it from. The only things that could change the price are your ages, per person trip cost & if the trip’s over 30 or 31 days in length.

Some of my competitor’s websites give you the option of using your total trip cost. They then divide it by the number of travelers. This is the wrong way to price most travel insurance plans.

All travel insurance providers use a per person trip cost to price their plans. Adding to the confusion, CSA Freestyle & CSA Freestyle Luxe plans let you buy their plan based on the Total Trip cost divided by the number of travelers even though they use the per person trip costs to arrive at their price.

You might say, “So what? If I insure my full trip’s cost, what’s the problem?” The problem comes at claim time.

In Madeline’s case, the trip cost was $1980 each for 2 people and $805 each for 2 people. And that’s how it must be insured. On those other sites, you’d end up insuring up to $1500 each on all 4 people.

You might say, “isn’t the claim is 100% of total trip cost?”. The answer’s no, because when you file a trip cancellation or interruption claim the trip insurance company will want proof of each individual’s per person trip cost.

The trip insurance company will then pay a maximum of up to each person’s insured amount. If you have one total price on one invoice, you can divide it by the number of travelers. But if you have a cruise where the 1st 2 people in a cabin pay more that the 3rd & 4th, you have to insure the trip on a per person basis.

Back to Madeline’s trip: unknown to her, that site divided $5570 (1980+1980+805+805) by 4 and covered them at $1392.50 each which is wrong. And at claim time, she would’ve lost up to $960. OUCH!

This is just plain sloppy. And, if you wanted to cover a pre-existing condition , it would disqualify you because you’d end up under-insuring your trip cost (thus breaking most plans’ rules).>.

CSA Freestyle Luxe ~ Do you insure your air?

Getting ready to purchase insurance for our cruise.:)

I cannot decide if I need to purchase enough to cover airfare. If we cancel the air (we are flying to Rome) Delta has the following regulations for credit.

For international travel, tickets must be reissued to the same or another international destination, and travel must begin within one year of the original ticket date.

Exception: The death of the passenger, immediate family member, or traveling companion. In this case, you will be required to forward a copy of the death certificate to the Passenger Refunds Department mailing address.

Sounds like we can get a credit voucher for our air ($1650 pp) if we cancel, so why insure the air portion? One reason I can see is that we have to use that ticket before the year is up, AND fly to either the same destination or another international destination, only. Chances of that happening are slim, unless we found a really good deal on a cruise again. No cash refund unless someone dies...as I understand the terms.

Secondly, my father put all of the air tickets on his credit card, even though the individual tickets are in our names. Because he "bought" the tickets, can the rest of us insure the tickets if we did not purchase them?

Another point that may put a stop to insuring the air... Under this CSA Luxe policy, insurance must be purchased within 24 hours of final trip payment for pre-existing conditions . I always assumed that pertained to the cruise payment. However, in further thought, the air was purchased back in December, so it may not be covered under this policy anyway!

Any experience or opinions?

I wouldn't insure the air for the full amount, for the reasons you mention. I do include what the change fee would be for reissuing the tickets. That way, you're covered for that.

I would use the first deposit you made for the trip, whether cruise deposit or airline ticket. I'm guessing the insuror would use the earliest possible date in making that determination.

Yes, you can insure even though the tickets were not purchased directly by you. All you'd need to file the claim can be obtained from the airline itinerary-receipt that they send.

Good point about insuring just the air change fee! It's usually a couple hundred $'s.

I don't understand your comment about insuring with the first deposit date. There is no place to put a date as far as I can remember. I think they just ask you for your trip dates. Then, if anything happens, they get a copy of your invoice to make sure that you insured within the 24 hour period of final pay...which will be the 10th.

So, that leads us back to the question of whether or not I can insure the air?

I don't understand your comment about insuring with the first deposit date.

Yes, you can still insure your flight cost. Just add that into the total of your trip cost when you purchase the insurance.

I'll just put in a little extra for air change fees. There was about a $50 difference if I insure the entire flight.

I don't need to insure hotel, because that will not be charged if we cancel within 24-48 hours.

As Jim alluded, it's the final payment date of your cruise that governs when you need to take out the insurance.

But I'd cover the entire air expense, especially if you don't believe that you'd re-use it within 12 months.

This question is the core of every decision to insure anything -- houses, cars, trips, health?

Do I want comprehensive and collision on my car, or just liability?

If I have coverage, want deductible do I want?

Really the question is -- do I want to bear the risk myself, or do I want someone else to bear the risk of loss -- that is, the insurance company. And if so, is the premium worth the risk that that shifted?

If you can stand the potential loss of $ 3200 IF you have to cancel, and IF you don't rebook, etc. ,etc., then save the premium, don't insure, and take your chances.

If you cannot stand the thought of losing anything in the event of a cancellation, then insure for the full amount ASAP! You will be out a bigger premium, but you have shifted the risk of loss.

Have a great and safe trip!

I think I should take the bite and pay the extra $50 and insure the air. ;)

Does anyone else have thoughts on this matter?;)

Just one thing to keep in mind (I found this out the hard way). When the airline says you can receive a voucher to use the tickets at a future date, the one year allowance they refer to is one year from the date you PURCHASED the tickets, not one year from the date you were due to travel. That can make a huge difference. We purchase air well in advance of our trips, so if we have to cancel, we really don't have that much time left to use the tickets.

Personally, when spending that much for air, I would insure the air as well. that way you're completely covered. You'll get all your money back rather than a voucher that you may or may not use. I would figure out how much more it will cost to insure the air, but personally I think it's worth it. We had to cancel a Mediterranean cruise, and luckily we had insured the air and we got back every penny. My husband was sick and there was no way we were going to be able to travel for awhile, so if I hadn't insured the air, I would have lost it completely, and those tickets weren't cheap!

Jo-Ann - Some airlines must have different policies. From the above policy from Delta, it sounds like you have to travel by the "ticketed" date. We had to cancel a cruise and flight two years ago. We were issued a voucher that had to be used (and returned from the trip by the beginning of the ticketed date), not when the ticket was bought.

Good point though! As I said before, the insurance runs about $50 extra and I plan to take it out.

I posted the following about shore excursions on the other thread, but will post this here for others to see. I guess I need to add in some insurance for cruise booked shore excursions.

Just found this on HAL's website

Doesn't sound good.

Cancellations and Refunds:

While no cancellation fee will be charged for bookings that are cancelled online, you need to keep in mind that online cancellations will not be accepted during the 10-day period prior to cruise departure. Instead, you will need to cancel once you board the ship. All onboard cancellations are subject to at least a 10% cancellation fee. If you cancel a Signature of Excellence shore excursion within 10 days of sailing, a 100% cancellation fee will apply since transportation and services will have already been arranged. If the onboard cancellation occurs after the cancellation deadline for the specific shore excursion, a 100% cancellation fee will apply. The ship's Shore Excursion Office will be able to advise you of the cancellation deadline applicable to each shore excursion. Passengers who wish to cancel should go the Shore Excursion Officer upon embarkation.

So, if you need to cancel the cruise (and excursions) within that 10 day period before the cruise, you are out of luck.

That is not accurate. It goes on your onboard account and if you are + you would get the money back on your credit card at the end of the cruise...

There are some exceptions with special excursions that require air/etc as HAL may not be able to get a refund. Those are clearly marked before purchase.

RuthC

Jade, if the cruise is canceled there is no on-board account to credit.

However, I do wonder about the conclusion that there would be no refund of the shore excursions if the cruise were canceled.

If I book a shore excursion I can get at least 90% refunded if I cancel before a specified date. I even have booked on-line and received a full refund on a cancellation made the day of boarding.

I wonder if HAL would make some accommodation to refund shore excursion money if the cruise were canceled entirely.

Thanks for explaining that to Jade13, RuthC! ;)

I believe you get it back by x date (I have heard announcements onboard that you have until x time to cancel) and of course if HAL cancels their own cruise they are going to give you a refund. There are some other areas where you may have an issue. It is clearly marked on HAL's web site the excursions where canceling can not be done after x date ( one in Helsinki flying to Lapland stands out as an example since HAL is buying a plane ticket from a 3rd party). So, if you cancel a cruise because you are ill that would come under your insurance.

Others such as helicopter tours in Alaska have a 10% canecelation fee and its the same if you book on your own.

So, if you cancel a cruise because you are ill that would come under your insurance.

That's the part I question. If HAL will reimburse shore excursion expense (at least up to 90%) when you cancel on board, it seems reasonable to believe they might reimburse if you cancel before you board. Insurance would not be necessary in that case.

I think the question should be put to HAL.

I agree RuthC!

Well, if we have to cancel the cruise, let's just hope it is before that 10 days. ;)

On Insuremytrip.com, do I fill out the Medical coverage as well, or is that already included in my Trip quote?

Medical (medical plans only)

I had a thought during one of my sleepless nights.

I am going to ask my TA what she thinks about this shore excursion matter. Because of their ages, my parents took the insurance offered through our TA when we first booked the cruise. It was much more reasonable for them, than the CSA Luxe. The rest of us wanted to wait (since, with this type of insurance, we could) in case the cruise was cancelled before final payment, so that we would not be out the insurance cost.

Also, if my parents couldn't travel, it occurred to me that my father turned down the air coverage (air coverage was going to be an additional $100 pp or so for them) and now I realize that there will be excursion losses for them as well. :(

Since the airline ticket is to Rome, I would insure it. I wouldn't insure the shore excursions because of the 90% refund.

I hope your trip goes well for you and that once you get everything taken care of, you will be able to truly enjoy the pre-cruise experience. Looking forward to a cruise is so much fun for me.

 There is no 90% refund if you cancel your entire cruise within that 10 day period. Only if you cancel once you are onboard. Since the cruise would be canceled, there would be no boarding the ship.

I have written HAL an email about this issue. I also wrote the insurance company about the air coverage, since it was booked a couple of months ago.

I don't think I will relax and enjoy the pre-cruise experience with this cruise. LOL So many people are counting on me to make this a great vacation! Until it is over, I will worry that everything goes as planned.

I know...it's :(, but true. :D

I heard back from HAL in in response to my email about cancelling a cruise within the 10 day period. I made it clear in my email that we did not have HAL insurance and I am saving a copy of this email.

Looks like we would get 100% back if we cancel the cruise.;)

Good Afternoon~   Thank you for contacting the Holland America ~ Shore Excursion department.   If the entire cruise is cancelled, the shore excursions are automatically cancelled and refunded to the original credit card used.   If you have any further questions, please call our shore excursion office .   Have a great day!
