15 Winter Trip Ideas In Texas

It’s time to start thinking about winter travel trip ideas in Texas for 2024!

If you’re still in the holiday spirit and looking to make this winter season more exciting, check out these 15 winter trip ideas in Texas.

As the holiday season winds down, everyone has returned to work, and the New Year has begun – it’s time to plan a winter getaway. Thanks to Texas’s mild winters, locals and out-of-towners can enjoy many outdoor activities and attractions in the winter months in Texas.

Daytime temperatures in Texas in the winter months can differ daily. So, always bring a coat with you, and layer your clothing. Peruse these winter trips to take in Texas – they may even be on your Texas winter bucket list.

Just so you know, Texas winters can get downright cold in the winter, and you may even see snow. You’ll need a coat somewhere in the state in the months of December, January, and February – and sometimes in March. Bundling up may be needed depending on where you visit, especially in the Panhandle.

15 Winter Trip Ideas In Texas

The winter climate in Texas is comfortable to many, but it does get down to freezing on some days. When it does, it rarely stays that way. The further you travel south, the warmer it can get. Don’t let anything destroy your winter adventures, though. From North Texas, East Texas, the West, and the South, and let’s not forget Central Texas, the Lone Star State has plenty of places to visit in winter that will suit everyone.

Here are fun winter activities to enjoy in Texas, and you may even want to schedule a winter vacation to continue the holiday cheer!

1. Follow The Texas Antique Trail

(must like antiques!)

Choose a region in Texas and follow the trail to unique antique shops. See all seven regions on the  Texas Antique Trail  to get an idea of the area you want to visit. Also, if you’re heading out before Christmas, several  Top Antique Shows in Texas  are going on in November and December.

And if you choose the region east of Dallas-Fort Worth – you might want to visit the world’s largest flea market – First Monday Trade Days in Canton, TX.

2. Rent An RV And Head To The Hill Country

Traveling in an RV gives you more freedom to see the world, bring the things you want, and do something different. It also allows you to enjoy nature and travel to several different places. I suggest heading to the Texas Hill Country on a scenic drive on Hwy 281 and making Marble Falls your first stop, where you’ll find at least five RV Parks for overnights. Many lakes surround Marble Falls (take your pick), there are a few golf courses, and it has a lovely walkable downtown with a winery.

Hanging out by the Guadalupe River in New Braunfels is also a great winter idea. The river is constantly flowing, and everything is open all around it. Gruene Hall is probably playing country music – you never know who will show up there or who will be singing.

3. Backpack In Big Bend National Park

If you long to explore the great outdoors, consider a backpacking trip. Pack your bag with the winter essentials and embark on an unforgettable adventure through Big Bend National Park. Don’t forget to snap photos of breathtaking views and watch for wildlife. It said that the Big Bend area is a hidden gem and that, though it’s on practically every list I have on this site, it’s not visited enough.

Backpacking in national parks is also a great way to see the world for what it is. Plus, winter months are typically cheaper than summer rates. If there is a time during your visit, spend the day at the natural hot springs nearby.

4. Winter Camping In The Texas Panhandle

What about winter camping? Have you ever tried combining the two? Winter camping is another extreme yet satisfying outdoor adventure. Plus, winter turns the great outdoors into a new world, making the experience unlike any other. Nature lovers enjoy spending time at Palo Duro Canyon zip lining across the canyon. I did this once but in the summer. It was my first zip line experience, and I was hooked on the outdoor activity.

5. Plan A Girls’ Trip To Dallas

When you can take a trip with some of the best women in your life, that experience becomes even better. A girls’ trip is a great way to reconnect and make more memories. The Dallas area is spread out, so find a great place to start. Deep Ellum is the best place to party, or if you all like art, the Dallas Museum of Art downtown would be excellent. And, while you’re in the area, stop by the Dallas Farmers Market. It’s one of the best outdoor markets I’ve been to in North Texas.

6. Visit Houston On A Houston CityPASS

A CityPASS is a simple vacation method in popular destinations like Houston and Dallas. CityPASS tickets contain admission to the most famous and popular attractions in each city and are priced up to 50% less than the combined regular price of admissions. The Johnson Space Center and the Space Center Houston are included in the Houston CityPass.

7. Stroll Downtown Austin

The best winter vacations are always in the south because the winter weather is better. Austin, the live music capital of the world, would be a great option. There’s always something going on there – live music and special events. Grab a hot cocoa and enjoy your time while walking around. It’s also a great time to take your kids to the Texas State Capitol.

Zilker Park and the Zilker Botanical Garden are wonderful places to visit in Austin.

8. Take A Day Trip To A State Park

All you need is a day at one of our Texas State Parks to fall in love with Texas (again). I hear Colorado Bend State Park and McKinney Falls State Park are gorgeous. One day soon, I’ll make it to Colorado Bend State Park – it’s on my winter bucket list.

UPDATE:  I made it …BUT we didn’t have reservations, and the park was full! Learned a lesson the hard way. Make reservations online for any Texas State Park. Another update – I went a second time and got in, but silly me didn’t have enough time to see it all.

9. Plan a Girl’s Getaway To San Antonio

Winters in San Antonio are very mild and rarely get under 60 degrees. Once in February, my son and I went to San Antonio for an event, and the weather was so nice and warm that the swimming pool at the hotel was open. Not knowing and not even thinking he could swim in February, I did not pack his swimsuit – so I made a mad dash to Target for one.

The San Antonio River Walk restaurants are booming in the winter, and the guided boat tours are operating. The Natural Bridge Caverns is always open, and The Spanish Missions would be a great Texas History lesson to learn more about. One of our writers took a  girl’s getaway to San Antonio  with two of her besties, where they visited some luxurious places.

10.  Explore West Texas

Trip ideas in Texas have to include West Texas. Do you have a subscription to the Texas Highways magazine? I do, and in each magazine I received in 2022, there was an ad/article about taking a West Texas Road Trip.

Towns included are Fort Stockton, Midland, Odessa, Alpine, Fort Davis, and Marfa. It briefly discusses each town and what’s happening during publication.  Texas Highways  is my favorite Texas travel magazine, and I have many trip ideas in Texas, too.

This is a trip I would like to take in the winter so that I can write an exclusive article about it. What do you think? Would you consider this road trip in your winter travels or any time of year?

11. Trek Down To South Padre Island

South Padre Island is a popular, well-known Texan Gulf Coast destination for Texans. It’s a tropical island paradise and the perfect place to escape cold temperatures. See what you can do on  South Padre Island  in the winter, and be sure to include Padre Island National Seashore in your travels.

12. Wine Lover’s Celebration Wine Tour

February – texas hill country.

The  Texas Hill Country Wine Trail  hosts four self-guided wine tours yearly in the hill country, the first being in February. Small towns of the hill country will participate in the first Texas wine tour of the year. Don’t let the name fool you. I went with a girlfriend (not a lover) last year, and we had a blast. Well, before the ice storm came through. That’s not a usual thing to happen in that area, either.

Double your fun and visit a few wineries (that are participating) in Dripping Springs, so you can also visit Hamilton Pool Preserve. Then you can also eat at Salt Lick BBQ – an awesome place to hear live music and enjoy the good barbecue they are known for.

13. Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier

I haven’t been to the Texas Gulf Coast in the winter months, but we did go in October one year. And would you know, it was warm enough for my son to play in the water? And so he did – clothes in all!

Not only is  Galveston Pleasure Pier  open year-round, but it’s also open on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. You may want to know  where to eat in Galveston  because there are so many places on the Island that it can get overwhelming.

14. Guadalupe Mountains National Park

Make it a week-long road trip and trek further to the  Guadalupe Mountains National Park . Located 110 miles east of El Paso and 56 miles southwest of Carlsbad, you could even visit Carlsbad Caverns. This is a trip of a lifetime.

15. Visit El Paso

Go for a scenic drive and explore Franklin Mountains State Park – the most western point of Texas. Smell the roses in the Municipal Rose Garden. These are just a few things to do. Going to El Paso would make a wonderful Texas winter vacation. You can always go to New Mexico and visit Carlsbad Caverns.

And here is one to grow on …

16. The Fifth Annual Epic Waters’ Epic Plunge

Saturday, January 2024, at  Epic Waters Indoor Waterpark in Grand Prairie .

This wintry event allows everyone to take a chilly plunge into Epic Waves, the waterpark’s 10,000-square-foot outdoor wave pool! Take the “Polar Plunge” (if you dare) into anticipated water temperatures in the 50s. Afterward, thaw off with a complimentary cup of hot chocolate while enjoying all the family fun inside the waterpark at a perfect 85 degrees.

Tickets:  $49 per person, and family 4-pack $149

All participants receive an “I Conquered the Epic Plunge” long-sleeved t-shirt, hot chocolate after they take the plunge, full-day admission of Splash-tastic indoor family fun, as well as a “bonus” admission ticket to return to enjoy everything Epic Waters Indoor Waterpark has to offer before December 31, 2023. WOW! Are you brave? I am not!!

If you’ve enjoyed these winter trip ideas in Texas, please share this article with your friends. Remember, travel costs may be down during this time, which means more money in your pocket.

10 Best Things to Do During Winter in Texas

Kimberly Brotherman / Contributor / Getty Images

Winter is an outstanding time to visit the Lone Star State, as there are plenty of things to do during the winter months—including holiday celebrations and romantic getaways. The surprise to most out-of-state visitors is the array of outdoor activities available in Texas during the winter season. Thanks to a relatively mild climate, visitors to Texas during the winter can go to the beach, play a round of golf, and even go trout fishing.

Celebrate Washington's Birthday

Texas Military Department / Flickr / CC BY 2

Most folks probably could never guess where the largest celebration of George Washington’s birthday is held. Surprisingly, it is staged each year in the border city of Laredo, Texas. Laredo throws the largest and oldest birthday celebration for the nation's first president.

Founded in 1898, this month-long celebration attracts more than 400,000 visitors each year. The event has grown to include a variety of entertainment and activities . This year’s celebration is scheduled to include a parade with majestic Clydesdale horses leading the way, concerts, colonial-themed pageants, fireworks displays, a carnival, fun run, BBQ cook-off, tequila tasting, and more. Many traditional events have a George or Martha Washington theme—attend a grand ball, a Commander's Reception, and more. There really is something for everyone at this “international celebration of a traditional American holiday.”

Play a Round of Golf

Texas is home to some of the nation's top golf courses. Although this has been a well-kept secret in the past, recent years have seen an increasing number of golfers traveling to Texas to take advantage of these world-class courses.

During the winter months, the weather is mild enough (on most days) to allow for a pleasant round. But beware—shorter daylight hours coupled with an increased number of golfers in popular snowbird areas can lead to more crowded courses.

Ideal places to golf in the winter include:

  • Brackenridge Park Golf Course : Brackenridge is a historic golf course in San Antonio and, having opened in 1916, is the oldest 18-hole public golf course in Texas.
  • Pine Dunes Resort : This is one of those undiscovered places. The small resort, located about two hours southeast of Dallas, is rated high by The Dallas Morning News—second in the state among public courses. The course in the pine-studded dunes was designed by world-renowned architects Jay & Carter Morrish.
  • South Padre Island : Reportedly one of the most fun courses at this vacation destination is at the  South Padre Island Golf Club , which overlooks Laguna Madre. This full-service course is known for its scenery, especially the sunsets.

Hit the Beach

DenisTangneyJr / Getty Images

Although the weather has cooled, there are still plenty of fun opportunities on Texas beaches. When most people think of Texas beaches, they immediately think of such locations as Galveston , with its long public pier and waterpark; Corpus Christi , with its beautiful beaches and state aquarium; and South Padre Island , with its historic lighthouse and sea turtle preserves. Each of these coastal towns is a year-round destination.

There are dozens of other beaches to discover in small coastal towns in Texas, offering visitors year-round activities such as fishing, birding, shelling, and more. Some winter beaches to discover include:

  • San Jose Island : This is a privately-owned island near Port Aransas and is an ideal place to go birding and enjoy the 21 miles of uncrowded, natural beach. Go shelling and find sand dollars. Access is permitted only on public land, which is the beach only.
  • South Padre Island: You can actually find large unspoiled areas to investigate on the island if you follow the main road up to where you can see the pristine, 609-square-mile Laguna Madre to the west. As you drive, you'll find that civilization disappears and you'll encounter 20-foot-high dunes. When you reach the end of the road, you'll be able to enjoy the natural setting with birds, crabs, and very few people.

Get Romantic on Valentine's Day

Dean Fikar / Getty Images

Texas has a number of towns and cities that are perfect for a romantic Valentine's Day vacation. From the Gulf Coast to the Texas Hill Country, there is a Texas town to accommodate anyone's preferences and tastes. Major cities such as Austin, Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio offer plenty of Valentine's Day activities, but so do more quaint locations such as German-heritage Fredericksburg and the artists' village of Wimberley.

The Texas Hill Country has long been appreciated as a romantic getaway. You can stroll the shops and galleries in Fredericksburg and stay at a romantic B&B such as the award-winning Rose Hill Manor . They serve a complimentary three-course breakfast and bistro-style meals, and can point you in the direction of wine tasting at a nearby winery.

Another great place to stay, especially if you have your own plane and want to fly into Fredericksburg, is the Hangar Hotel, a 1940s-style hotel (yet built new from the bottom up) with upscale amenities plus a WWII vibe. Drop into the "Officer's Club" for a cocktail before heading out to downtown Fredericksburg for some great German food.

Fish for Rainbow Trout

Jacob Bodkin / Getty Images

Few folks outside of Texas realize that portions of the Guadalupe River in the Texas Hill Country offer some excellent rainbow trout fishing on a year-round basis. Located a short drive from Austin, the Canyon Tailrace , a stretch of the Guadalupe that extends several miles below Canyon Lake, maintains a low enough water temperature to support a good population of rainbows and a few browns as well.

There is not a wide variety of trout fishing options available throughout the year, and summertime trout are pretty much relegated to the Canyon Tailrace. However, the winter trout population in the Lone Star State grows rapidly as the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department goes about their annual winter trout stocking program from December through February.

Shop for Antiques

Richard Freeda / Getty Images

While there are quaint towns with enticing antique stores dotting their main streets, the serious antique hunters head to the huge antique markets that Texas is famous for. Fredericksburg Trade Days are held through the winter and offer 350 vendors in seven barns and even invites shoppers to relax in their beer garden.

Round Top, located between Houston and Austin, is known for its huge antique shows. There are three shows each year: the world-renowned Spring and Fall Antiques Fairs and the newer Winter Antiques Show in the Big Red Barn.

Float on the San Antonio River at Holiday Time

Head down to the River Walk and hop on one of San Antonio’s informational boat tours to see the city and the holiday lights from the river. The famous holiday lights on the River Walk are turned on each year the day after Thanksgiving and remain on from dusk to dawn daily till just after the first January.

You can take a dinner ride on the boats and enjoy the floating musicians as you float and dine along under the entrancing lights.

Ice Skate in Houston

Witold Skrypczak / Getty Images

Get in the winter mood and go ice skating at The Galleria in Houston. There’s a huge Christmas tree right in the middle of the rink to enjoy as you circle the rink. They offer lessons and special holiday events. If you are a gawker vs. a skater, you can look down upon the festive rink from the second-floor railing.

Discover Christmas in Grapevine

Tommy Wolfe / Flickr

Grapevine offers more than 1,400 holiday events within a 40-day time period and has proclaimed itself the Christmas Capital of Texas. There's the  North Pole Express Train ,  ICE! , an ice sculpture exhibit featuring gingerbread houses, and gala parades with lighted floats.

You can stay at the Gaylord Texan Resort , which goes all out with decorations at Christmas and has a 52-foot-tall rotating Christmas tree and a life-sized gingerbread house.

Ring in the New Year

franckreporter / Getty Images

On December's final day, there will be plenty of New Year's Eve parties and celebrations throughout Texas. Virtually every city and town in Texas will see New Year's Eve celebrations of all sizes. In the larger cities, dozens of clubs, bars, hotels, and restaurants throw New Year's Eve parties.

Additionally, Texas' biggest cities also host some of the most exciting New Year's celebrations like "Celebrate San Antonio," a downtown community celebration with multiple events and a fantastic fireworks display.

Not all the New Year's Eve fun is limited to the big cities. The iconic Texas towns of Gruene and Luckenbach, offering country-western dancing, are always popular New Year's Eve destinations.

7 Best Places to See Snow in Texas

Written by Brad Lane Updated Feb 7, 2023 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

Author Brad Lane has spent several winter trips enjoying the sunshine and snow in Texas.

Can you see snow in Texas? The answer is rarely, but when it does snow, the flurries usually fall in the Texas Panhandle and in west Texas. Sometimes the Dallas/Fort Worth area also sees snow. The best places to visit to see snow are cities like Amarillo and areas with higher elevations like Guadalupe Mountains National Park.

Snow in Texas

Central Texas doesn't accumulate too much snow, but places like Houston, Austin, and San Antonio receive snowflakes every few years. Snow at places like Corpus Christi in southern Texas is even rarer, but the once-in-a-decade snow on the Texas coast can be a magical thing to see.

While whiteout conditions are rare, and no one moves to the state looking for wintry weather, the experience of snow in Texas is a special sight to see. Plan your winter visit with our list of the best places to see snow in Texas.

1. Amarillo

4. guadalupe mountains national park, 5. big bend national park, 7. fort worth, frequently asked questions about snow in texas, snow near texas, texas snow party, things to do in texas in the winter, map of texas - best places to see snow.

Palo Duro Canyon State Park covered in snow

At the center of the Texas Panhandle, Amarillo sits at an elevation of over 3,600 feet and receives approximately 18 inches of snow every year.

While most of the snowfall in Amarillo occurs in January, the surrounding months, including October and April, have had snow in the past. Snow in Amarillo travels south from the Rocky Mountains and tends to fall fast on the city when it does.

Amarillo sees snow at least once a year, though it can be tough to plan much ahead of time for a snowy vacation. Forecasts typically see it coming at least three days ahead of time. Whiteout conditions are rare in Amarillo but do exist during winter events like " thundersnows " and other fast-moving weather patterns. Road conditions can become challenging during these winter storms.

Palo Duro Canyon State Park is a great place to enjoy some snowy landscapes less than 30 minutes from downtown Amarillo. Known as the Grand Canyon of Texas, the park features campgrounds, multi-use trails, and a road that accesses the bottom of the canyon. While a winter coat isn't common in Palo Duro Canyon, even a small layer of snow on the landscape makes for a scenic travel experience.

Snow-covered trees in Lubbock

Lubbock is a central hub of activity in West Texas, and the birthplace of Buddy Holly. Snow doesn't fall very often in Lubbock, but when it does, the city can get dumped on.

While Lubbock averages approximately eight inches of snow in the winter season, some years, like 2015, can double that. Conversely, an entire winter season can pass by with scarce snowflakes.

The earliest recorded snowfall in Lubbock happened in October. The months of December, January, and February are much more likely to have snow. November has seen significant snowfall in Lubbock in past years, though most years November has rain if any precipitation at all.

Many of the top attractions in Lubbock , including the Buddy Holly Center and Statue, are hardly hampered by snow.

Franklin Mountains State Park in El Paso

In far West Texas near the New Mexico border, El Paso does not receive the most snow in Texas. When it does snow in El Paso, however, the winter weather is often beautifully displayed across the city's mountains.

The place to get your hands on a few snowballs in El Paso is the Franklin Mountains, just a short drive from downtown. Franklin Mountain State Park is a good place to head for some El Paso snow, where hiking trails take you higher into the mountains. Camping and day-use areas are available at Franklin Mountain State Park.

The normal amount of snowfall in El Paso is less than four inches , and when it does fall, the snow that coats the mountains tends to stick around the longest.

El Paso has not had a major winter event since a 1987 December blizzard dropped nearly 17 inches in 24 hours.

The best months for El Paso snow are December and January .

A light dusting of snow in Guadalupe Mountains National Park

In west Texas, near the New Mexico border, Guadalupe Mountains National Park contains the four highest peaks in Texas.

With elevations from 3,000 to 8,000-plus feet , winter snow is common at higher elevations of the park. Snow can cover high-altitude hiking trails during December and January, like the route to the summit of Guadalupe Peak .

Both campgrounds in Guadalupe Mountains National Park remain open throughout the winter. The smaller Dog Canyon Campground features more shelter to shield campers from gusty winter winds. Despite the lack of snow, temperatures steadily drop throughout the night, and overnight visitors should pack accordingly.

Visitors to Guadalupe Mountains National Park in the winter should prepare for blustery conditions that break from the normal forecast of west Texas weather. Still, this can be a favorable time to visit outside of the blistering heat of summer. Bring extra layers for the chilly overnight temperatures.

Snow in Big Bend National Park

It's a rare treat to see snowcapped mountains or frosted cacti in Big Bend National Park, near the border of Mexico in West Texas. The only chance to see snow in Big Bend is in the higher elevations of the park, some of which can be seen from the car.

Snow adds extra appeal to scenic drives in the park. The Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive , in particular, is extra charming with a fresh layer of snow. At the highest elevations in the park, visitors can expect to see the snow-crusted peaks of the Chisos Mountains throughout the winter.

Hiking trails into the mountains become more challenging in the winter but offer beautiful opportunities for photography. As one of the state's largest tracts of roadless public lands, Big Bend has over 150 miles of hiking trails . Some of these trails traverse desert landscapes and can be easily hiked throughout the winter.

Snow-covered bridge in Dallas

Snow in Dallas doesn't happen every year. Average daytime temperatures remain in the 60s throughout the winter, although fast-moving Texas Northers can drop temperatures several degrees in just a few minutes.

Occasional snowstorms have come through Dallas and blanketed the city in the past. Some, like a historic February 2010 blizzard, brought over a foot of snow.

Timing a trip to Dallas to catch some snow can be challenging. Unless you live nearby and have a flexible schedule, it's a matter of luck to see snow in Dallas. The months of January, February, and March are the most likely time to see any snow at all .

With limited snowflakes in the forecast, Dallas still provides snowy attractions like ICE! at the Gaylord Texan Resort and an artificial snow hill at Six Flags over Texas .

The snow tends to stick around longer the farther away from the concrete streets of these major commercial areas. Snow in Dallas and Fort Worth is rarely significant enough to report, making this touch of winter a special thing to experience.

Rare snowfall in Houston

Does it Snow in Houston? Snow doesn't happen in Houston every year, but historically, the city has seen a few snowfall events. Anything over one to three inches of snow in Houston is significant. No other winter storm has since compared to an 1895 winter event that dumped over 20 inches on the city.

Does it Snow in Austin? With zero inches of annual snowfall, it doesn't snow that much in Austin . Gulf air and a southern latitude prevent much of anything from sticking around, even if flurries are falling from the sky. Austin snow isn't unheard of, though, and the last significant snow event occurred in 2017, when approximately two inches of snow stuck to the ground. A notable 2021 snowstorm swept across Austin and the rest of the state, leaving some residents without power for days.

Does it Snow in San Antonio? Much like Austin less than a hundred miles away, San Antonio rarely gets any snow. Flurries might be present throughout December, January, or February, but it's also common for multiple winters to pass with only trace amounts of snow. One of the largest and most recent snow events in San Antonio was a January 1985 blizzard that brought over a foot of snow.

Does it Snow in Corpus Christi? About a third of all winters in Corpus Christi , on the Gulf of Mexico, have a snow or ice event. The chances of ice are greater than snow in Corpus Christi, and when snow sticks, it's considered a special event. January is the coldest month of the year in Corpus Christi, but a few snowstorms have occurred in both December and February.

Ski Santa Fe

While Texas snow is special and tends to not last very long, nearby states offer true winter playgrounds where snow is a guarantee. The states of New Mexico and Colorado offer some of the best places to see snow close to Texas. Popular winter activities in these states include downhill skiing, snowboarding, tubing, and snowshoeing.

Texans looking for snow can head to the mountainous terrain of Lincoln National Forest in New Mexico. Seventy-five miles west of Roswell , this national forest encompasses high elevation landscapes, including the Sierra Blanca and the Sacramento Mountains. The mountain town of Ruidoso is a great gateway to the snowy landscapes, including the nearby Ski Apache resort.

Other ski resorts in New Mexico can be found farther north, but still close to Texas. Santa Fe is surrounded by great places to ski and play in the snow. The adjacent Santa Fe National Forest is a mecca for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and other winter sports. For downhill endeavors, Ski Santa Fe is 15 minutes from the city.

With the world-famous Summit County and several incredible ski resorts, the state of Colorado attracts winter enthusiasts from around the world. Texans heading to Colorado don't need to travel all the way to Breckenridge to enjoy the snow of Colorado. Across the New Mexico border, and a seven-hour drive from Amarillo, the mountain town of Pagosa Springs is a great basecamp to explore the San Juan Mountains.

For Texans that don't want to drive to see snow, a Texas Snow Party can deliver snow to you. Commercial businesses in nearly every major city in Texas offer services that transport ice and a snowmaker to a destination of your choosing. These businesses then construct a temporary winter wonderland or tubing hill for the whole family to enjoy . Texas Snow Parties are popular for birthday parties, special events, and holiday celebrations.

San Antonio River Walk on a winter night

Most visits to Texas are often an escape from the snowy season up north. And rightfully so—the Texas winter is temperate, with typically warm, sunny days and chilly nights rarely dipping below freezing. This means that many of the state's top attractions are also fun things to experience during the winter in Texas .

Topping the list are quintessential sightseeing experiences like the San Antonio River Walk , with the never-forgotten Alamo a short walk away.

Other winter destinations in Texas include places like Texas Hill Country and Galveston , which bills itself as the "Winter Wonder Island of Texas." Other places to visit that lean into the holiday spirit in Texas include Grapevine , also known as the Christmas Capital of Texas, which ranks among the best Christmas towns in the US .

N ow that Houston’s scorching summer heat has started to feel like just a bad dream, the collective yearning for an escape from the sun has never been stronger. We all need a snowy vacation. Tucked away in the Panhandle and known for receiving the most snowfall in all of Texas, Amarillo is a great place to savor the joys of winter .

Unfortunately for those still traumatized by the recent heat dome, Amarillo suffers from another kind of dome—what some locals refer to as a “poop dome.” This aromatic surprise for travelers is a product of all the livestock yards and manure-fertilized grain fields in the area. But don’t let the unpleasant regional scent distract you from the city’s iconic attractions like Cadillac Ranch and Palo Duro Canyon, or its snow-covered landscapes, thriving cultural hub, and vibrant food scene.

Admire Snowy Marvels

When it comes to experiencing snow in Amarillo, two destinations stand out: Cadillac Ranch and Palo Duro Canyon State Park. Cadillac Ranch is a peculiar yet fascinating roadside attraction that features a row of 10 half-buried Cadillac cars, nose-down in the ground. This quirky art installation is a must-visit during the winter months, when a blanket of snow creates a surreal and even more photogenic scene. Visitors are even encouraged to bring spray paint and leave their mark on the vintage automobiles.

Known as the “Grand Canyon of Texas,” Palo Duro is a majestic natural wonder about 30 miles southeast of Amarillo, and the second-largest canyon in the country. During the winter, the park takes on an entirely different character as the rugged red rock formations are adorned with a breathtaking layer of snow, making hiking and exploring the trails even more exhilarating.

Explore galleries showcasing local talent, such as From 6th Collective, a 15,000-square-foot retail space that houses an eclectic selection of artworks from area makers. The Amarillo Museum of Art also curates an impressive collection of modern and contemporary American art and hosts special exhibitions during the winter. Make sure to visit the Amarillo Art Institute’s newly renovated Arts in the Sunset center, a group of more than 50 galleries and studios with art from more than 100 local artists. Don’t forget to check out the outdoor sculpture garden, and if you time your visit right, go to the monthly First Friday Art Walk, a free event of live music, food, and the chance to mingle with the artists themselves.

Hidden on the outskirts of the town of Canyon right by Palo Duro, Bar Z Winery is a gem that serves wines made on-site from 100 percent Texas-grown grapes. Why This Coastal Texas Town Is A Unique Winter Getaway

places to visit in texas in the winter

  • Winter Travel

Have you been dreaming of a winter island getaway? Look no further than Galveston. You’ll arrive during the peak season for most other island getaways, where you’d have to contend with big crowds and high prices. But winter months are low season in Texas, and this barrier island offers budget-friendly accommodations and a relaxed vibe. With average highs in the 60s and lows in the high 40s, you’ll be able to enjoy all of the indoor and outdoor activities available on the island.

As Texas newbies (we’ve been here about 3 years), my husband and I headed south from our East Texas home to discover great eats, tons of outdoor activity, cultural attractions, and superb shopping in Galveston.

Here are nine reasons to put this charming coastal island on your winter getaway list.

The Galveston Island Trolley

1. Easily Accessible By Car Or Plane

Galveston is a barrier island boasting a 32-mile stretch of sandy beaches located about an hour south of Houston, Texas. It’s connected to the mainland by a causeway, making it as easy to get to an island as possible. If you’re not within driving distance like us, the closest international airport to Galveston is William P Hobby Airport. Located on the southern side of Houston, it’s only about an hour’s drive from the terminal to the beach.

While Galveston is 32 miles long, it’s only a couple of miles wide, making it easy to navigate. If you find yourself on the island with no vehicle, it’s not a problem. Uber and Lyft rides are readily available, and the Galveston Island Trolley runs on most weekends.

The Grand Galvez Resort and Spa, Galveston, Texas

2. Abundance Of Accommodations

Every accommodation type imaginable is available for your winter getaway on Galveston Island, from major hotel chains to unique vacation rentals and RV destination campgrounds. There are several B&Bs on the island, and you can even stay in the historic district for a unique Victorian feel.

Suppose you’re looking for a more resort-like experience. Check out the Grand Galvez Hotel and Spa , built in 1911, or head inland a bit to the nearly 250-acre Moody Gardens Resort .

Pro Tip: It’s important to remember that most properties in Galveston are not directly on the beach. They are predominately located directly across Seawall Blvd. We stayed directly on the beach at the Holiday Inn Club Vacation — Galveston Beach Resort . It was nice not to have to cross the street for beach access, but you’ll be several miles from the downtown area and restaurants.

Gulf of Mexico from the Galveston Seawall

3. Galveston Island Beaches

Galveston Island boasts 32 miles of sandy beaches. My husband and I loved the hard-packed sand, perfect for long walks and sunset bike rides. There are even a few spots where you can drive your car on them.

The historic Galveston Pleasure Pier juts out into the Gulf, making for dramatic photographs, especially at sunrise.

Pro Tip: Take a stroll, or better yet, ride a bike along the Galveston Seawall. You’ll see loads of public art, including the famous 1900 Great Storm Statue erected in memory of the victims of the 1900 hurricane.

Moody Mansion in Galveston, Texas

4. Galveston Island History & Heritage

A bustling maritime port and the birthplace of Juneteenth celebrations , Galveston celebrates its rich history and heritage year-round.

First settled in the 16th century, Galveston’s citizens have weathered civil war, survived massive storms, and created celebrations that spread to the nation. Spend some of your time in Galveston appreciating the city’s historic buildings and homes, such as the 1895 Moody Mansion , the Bryan Museum , and more.

Spend the day walking streets lined with Victorian homes, or get up close and explore 19th-century mansions on eye-opening tours. Many tours run only on the weekends in winter, but don’t despair. My husband and I spent hours walking the streets, marveling at the magnificent displays of Victorian architecture. Stop by the Visitors Center for a map.

Pro Tip: Be sure to visit the historic district and see the tree sculptures . After Hurricane Ike destroyed many of the massive oak trees which flanked the streets in 2008, residents came together and hired artists to come in and carve sculptures from the stumps.

5. Extraordinary Galveston Museums

Explore locomotive history with one of the largest restored railroad collections in the United States at the Galveston Railroad Museum, or imagine life on the high seas aboard the tall ship ELISSA at the Galveston Historic Seaport. Take a leisurely self-guided tour through the retired Ocean Star jack-up rig at the Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig and Museum .

My husband, a Navy veteran, loved the Galveston Naval Museum . Located on Pelican Island, we took a self-guided tour; guided tours are available of the World War II submarine that sank one of the Japanese aircraft carriers responsible for bombing Pearl Harbor and the USS Stewart , the only Edsall-class destroyer escort preserved in the United States.

Art lovers will enjoy the Galveston Arts Center , which hosts world-class exhibits in its historic First National Bank building. Visitors may also take art classes and workshops, join in on an ArtWalk, and attend exciting events throughout the year.

6. Kayaking And Art On The Artist Boat

Speaking of art, one of the unique things I did during our trip was kayaking with the Artist Boat . Artist Boat offers guided paddling trips through the wetlands and coastal prairies of Galveston Bay. My knowledgeable guide explained the ecological impact of the area as we glided through the water.

After a couple of miles, we pulled the boats onto a sand bar and opened the plastic art boxes strapped onto the back of the kayak. Inside were all of the supplies to create a watercolor painting. After some brief instruction, we painted the landscape using seawater to wet the brushes. Although my painting was less than spectacular, the experience was a big win. Highly recommended!

The three Moody Gardens pyramids

7. Moody Gardens

If you’ve ever seen pictures of Galveston, you’ve probably seen the iconic glass pyramids on Galveston Bay at Moody Gardens Resort. If you’re not staying at Moody Gardens , it’s worth a trip.

The three pyramids consist of an aquarium pyramid, a rainforest pyramid, and a discovery pyramid. The world-class aquarium contains tuxedo-clad penguins, sharks, jellyfish, and thousands of brightly colored tropical fish. The Discovery Pyramid has a hands-on museum geared more toward children and teens. Something to keep in mind if you’re bringing the grands.

My favorite of the three is the rainforest. We entered through the tree-top canopy entrance filled with over 1,700 exotic plants and endangered animals that range from giant Amazon river otters to an ocelot, Komodo dragons, and other reptiles. Saki monkeys, cotton-top tamarins, and sloths roam freely, and birds fly between the trees as visitors walk the trails.

Fisherman's Wharf Seafood Grill in Galveston

8. Great Eats On Galveston Island

Fresh seafood and Southern favorites are plentiful on the island. Gaido’s has been on the island since 1911 and serves excellent seafood and steaks. If the weather is okay, Fisherman’s Wharf offers excellent outdoor dining with gorgeous views of the tall ship ELISSA . You may even see one of several cruise ship glide by.

Pro Tip: Don’t miss Gaido’s next-level pecan pie. Served year-round, the Pecan Crunch is a fan favorite. They ship thousands across the country during the holiday season.

Lunch/Casual Dining

If you’re looking for a nice lunch spot or more casual dining, check out The Spot . You’ll have a great view of Pleasure Pier while enjoying an enormous burger washed down with a refreshing cocktail from the Tiki Bar.

9. Galveston Island Fishing

Galveston has got you, whether you’re after a top-rated deep-sea fishing charter or simply want to drop a line from the pier. The bayside is known for redfish, speckled trout, black drum, and flounder. In contrast, the Gulf has large cobia, wahoo, mahi-mahi, red snapper, kingfish, marlin, and various tuna species. Enchanted Rock

This pink granite mountain is located right in the heart of Texas Hill Country (which offers plenty to do) , and it's the largest Monadnock hill in the United States. The 425-foot tall dome is called "enchanted" because of legends created about it by the local Tonkawa and Apache tribes due to its regular creaking and groaning from the natural heating and cooling of the rock.

The 1,640-acre hiking, rock climbing, and camping site gets a significant number of visitors, but people seeking a tranquil visit shouldn't be concerned since the park is always closed once a specific number of visitors is reached. 10 Least-Crowded, But Still Scenic Places To Visit In Texas

Farmers' Almanac predicts cold, wet weather in Texas this spring. Can we trust it?

places to visit in texas in the winter

It looks like some of the cold, rainy weather we experienced this winter is going to follow us into springtime, Austin.

The Farmers' Almanac, which has been predicting weather patterns across North America for more than 200 years, expects Texas to experience below-normal temperatures and normal to above-normal precipitation this spring, which officially begins on the spring equinox March 19.

In almost perfect contrast to Texas, the country at large is expected to experience warmer temperatures and below-normal rain, according to the almanac .

How accurate is the Farmers' Almanac?

Were you looking toward more favorable weather than cold temperatures and rain this spring? Well, there's a good chance the almanac's prediction won't come to fruition.

The almanac claims to have an accuracy rate of about 80%, but some studies have placed that number much lower.

A 2010 University of Illinois study tested the accuracy of the almanac's monthly temperatures and precipitation forecasts by comparing them to the actual weather data over a five-year period and found monthly precipitation forecasts were 51.9% accurate and monthly temperature forecasts were 50.7% accurate.

The Farmers' Almanac previously predicted an "unseasonably cold" winter in Texas, but Keith White, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service office in New Braunfels, said Texas' winter is pretty much on track. However, that's sometimes tough to define because of the presence of volatile weather patterns during the winter months. White said he would not characterize Texas' winter as "unseasonably cold."

Mack Morris, a meteorologist at the weather service's Camp Mabry office, said the best predictor of Texas' upcoming weather is overall climate conditions. The climate pattern known as El Niño is expected to bring cooler, wetter weather to Texas during the spring and summer months, Morris said.

In the short term, the weather service's Climate Prediction Center is indicating the possibility for below-normal temps and below-normal precipitation near the Rio Grande, White said.

What is the weather in Austin? Highs in the 70s and light rain possible this week

How does the Farmers' Almanac work?

The Farmers' Almanac has been forecasting the weather for over two centuries. According to the outlet, they do this by using a formula developed by the original editor David Young, an astronomer and mathematician in 1818.

The rules have been altered slightly and turned into a formula that is both mathematical and astronomical, but the exact method used remains a guarded secret by the Almanac. What we do know is that sunspot activity, tides, the position of planets and more are taken into account.

2 days of record highs before a cold front brings us back to winter

By Jeff Ray

Updated on: February 25, 2024 / 10:44 PM CST / CBS Texas

NORTH TEXAS -  The warmest winter day to date happened Sunday, a high of 85°. The last weekend of meteorological winter was the warmest weekend of winter, and it is only getting warmer. We are forecasting record highs Monday and Tuesday.

download.png

Both records are over 100 years old. A high in the 90s in February is extremely rare. Over the last 100 years, there have only been three, including one just last year. Monday will make the fourth.

download.png

But the calendar doesn't lie, it is still February. It'll return Tuesday night on a powerful cold front that will produce 35mph wind gusts as it moves over North Texas. Not much in rain chances with the front.

download.png

It'll only take 48 hours for us to travel six months and two seasons. Monday's high will be typical of mid-June. Wednesday's high will be typical of mid-January.

download.png

We are forecasting lows in the 30s on Thursday morning, the last day of winter.

download.png

The last freeze at DFW was exactly a week ago. The typical last freeze of the season is just over two weeks from now.

Elevated fire risk continues until temperatures and winds come down.

download.png

Rain looks scarce this week. Better chances show up just past the 7-day.

download.png

We'll end winter with some winter temperatures. Spring temperatures return on the first day of meteorological spring, March 1, on Friday.
