Reviews of Our Catalina Island Cruise

Google review logo

Took the whole family out to Catalina (parents, grandfather, sister, and boyfriend) and I was very happy with our experience. The included breakfast and dinner were ideal as it allowed us the full 4 hours to enjoy the island and not have to worry about eating and it was delicious. I appreciated the stops for whale and dolphin watching going and returning. It was really awesome how close we got to everything. Staff was also very friendly which was much appreciated and I appreciated the commentary they gave for each species we saw. We enjoyed talking to staff and Captain Dave himself. We plan on doing the Two Harbors trip next month. Definitely recommend!

The trip to Catalina was fun and exciting seeing a fin whale, a minke whale and lots of dolphin. The staff was friendly and very knowledgeable about the sea life and our time on Catalina Island.

One of the most thrilling experiences of my life! The crew were fantastic, so informative and thoughtful! The food was outstanding! The dolphins.... Well, they were worth every single penny and more! Not only did we catch an amazing pod leaving Catalina but also another huge pod closer to the mainland! Wow!

This was an 11-hour tour to Catalina Island and back on the Hoku Nai'a, one of my favorite boats. You just feel really special on her with the fun decor, open decks and comfortable seating. She's definitely not zippy so the trip to Catalina is about 3.5 hours, including well-deserved and desired stops for cetaceans, which we saw 3 minkes, a fin whale, and 2 pods of dolphins; bottlenose and hundreds of common dolphins. Also in the morning we were served a lovely breakfast with delicious, ripe in-season fruit, some pastry, coffee and juices. There were several substantial snacks being passed around for meat-eaters, so I do suggest they have a couple of vegetarian items. Once we docked there was about 4 hours to do what you desired in town. I had plenty of time to shop (for a new hat as mine flew off into the wake of the Hoku), eat lunch with a friend, and snorkel, a great afternoon! On our way back to Dana Point, we again had a tasty meal, animal and plant-based burgers were offered with all the fixin's. The dolphin pods joined us on this leg, highly entertaining us. Yes the crew was on it, two Captains; including THE Captain Dave and Capt. Alex, and Mates Caitlyn, Lauren, and Will. They shared information along the way and all were very engaging when we asked questions. We motored into Dana Point Harbor in front of a beautiful sunset and silhouetted harbor birds on the jetties. Excellent Adventure!

I absolutely love this company! A friend and I did the Whale Watch trip to Catalina and back. Although it was a long day, it was worth it. The crew were outstanding as always. They take such good care of all of us on the boat! The trip included a hot Continental breakfast and a Burger & Hot Dog Bar for dinner. We were fortunate to see several Minke whales, a Fin Whale and plenty of dolphins and 4 hours to do whatever you wanted to do on the island. Thanks again for a wonderful day!

We had such a great time with captain Dave & his crew .

Set off From the Dolphin & Whale Capital of the World®

Many SoCal destinations offer trips to Catalina Island by boat. But none of them can rival the Dana Point to Catalina Island cruise experience. With year-round whale sightings and more dolphins per square mile than anywhere else on earth, Dana Point is  the official Dolphin and Whale Watching Capital of the World® .

Traveling to Catalina Island from Dana Point is an adventure you’ll never forget. On your way to and from the island, you can enjoy rare sights like watching giant blue whales or seeing  dolphin stampedes  ⏤ a breathtaking spectacle of hundreds or even thousands of dolphins leaping in and out of the water!

Interact With Dolphins

There’s a reason why Dana Point is known as the dolphin capital of the world. There are more than 450,000 dolphins off Dana Point’s coast! With all these dolphins in our waters, you’re most likely going to meet a whole bunch of them on our trip to Catalina Island by boat. Some of the most common types of  dolphins we see  on our Catalina Island cruises include:

  • Common dolphins  ⏤ Most of the dolphins you’ll see on our cruises are common dolphins. These beautiful creatures are very social and often come over to bow ride with our boat.
  • Bottlenose dolphins  ⏤ One of the most popular types of dolphin species, bottlenose dolphins are larger than their common counterparts. They are very playful and intelligent, responding to our guests’ claps and cheers with aerial acrobatic performances!
  • Risso’s dolphins  ⏤ Risso’s are easily identified by their unusual look. They have no beak, a blunt round head, and their body is scarred with white lines from head to tail.

Watch Whales Up Close

Dana Point has one of the most diverse marine ecosystems in the world. This makes it an ideal environment for different species of whales. Our waters are home to a large variety of whales that can be seen all day throughout the year. A few types of  whales we commonly see  on our Catalina Island cruises are:

  • Blue whales  ⏤ One of the best things you might see on our Catalina Island boat charters are blue whales. At lengths of up to 100 ft and weighing as much as 200 tons, these majestic creatures are the largest animal to exist on earth!
  • Humpback whales  ⏤ These underwater creatures grow to an average length of 60 feet and weigh up to about 40 tons. Humpback whales delight in eating crustaceans and small fish.
  • Fin whales ⏤ The second largest whale in the world (after the blue whale) is also one of the fastest. These sleek cetaceans are known as the greyhounds of the sea!

7 Things to Do if Visiting Catalina Island by Cruise Ship

Doug Parker

Doug Parker

  • August 19, 2023

Visiting Catalina Island by cruise ship is common for short cruises departing from Los Angeles or Long Beach. Located 27 miles off the coast of Southern California, it is a popular vacation destination for cruise passengers and those seeking a quick getaway.

catalina island by cruise ship

Mainland visitors can reach the island via a quick ferry ride from several different departure points, while cruise ships docked offshore are only a 10-minute water shuttle ride away.

visual map to Catalina Island

With its warm weather, beautiful beaches, and numerous outdoor activities, it’s no surprise that over 280,000 cruisers flock to Catalina Island every year.

Here are seven things to do if you visit Catalina Island by cruise ship.

Rent a Golf Cart

catalina island harbor

Catalina has limited cars, so consider renting a golf cart to explore and enjoy breathtaking views from higher terrains.

But be careful. Regular vehicles use the roads, but you’ll find lots of golf carts cruising around the mountains of Avalon and the streets below, too — visitors and residents.

Two golf cart rental shops are in town, just a short walk from the tender dock. Both companies charge $60 per hour to rent a cart. The company we used without issue was Island Rentals, Inc., a five-minute walk from the water shuttle dock.

We used Catalina Island Golf Cart Rentals because it was the first one we saw and was less crowded.

Take a Hike

beautiful scenery at Catalina Island

Catalina Island is home to several hiking trails, many of which offer stunning views of the ocean and the surrounding landscape. Whether you’re an experienced hiker or just looking for a stroll, there’s a trail on Catalina Island.

The Hermit Gulch Trail : This moderate 2.4-mile trail takes you through a beautiful canyon and offers panoramic island views.

The Two Harbors Trail : This easy 2-mile trail takes you through the village and offers beautiful ocean views.

Bring plenty of water and prepare for the weather regardless of your chosen trail. It is also essential to follow Leave No Trace principles while on the paths to help protect the island’s natural beauty.

(Note: If you drive the golf cart to the trailhead, remember you’re still paying $60 per hour, whether you are driving it or not.)

Go Whale Watching or Take a Glass Bottom Boat Tour

Catalina Island Boat Tour

You can go whale watching on Catalina Island during certain times of the year. The island is a great place to see whales as they migrate along the California coast.

Grey whales are seen off the coast in the winter months, and blue whales during the summer. The area is also home to various dolphins that can be seen year-round.

If you’re a fan of the water, you’ll want to check out the snorkeling and diving opportunities on Catalina Island. The clear waters around the island are home to various marine life, including colorful fish, octopuses, and more.

Eat (& Drink!) at Luau Larry’s

refreshing drink at Luau Larry's

There are plenty of little spots to grab a bite in Avalon, especially along the main drag by the water. But if you love island and tiki-themed venues, we suggest hitting Luau Larry’s. The restaurant and bar offer a tropical, laid-back vibe that is full of character.

burger and fries

Luau Larry’s is known for its famous “Wiki Wacker” cocktail (light rum, brandy, pineapple juice, orange juice, and grenadine), which draws tourists and locals to the bar.

Since you’re visiting Catalina Island by cruise ship and the bar is walking distance from the ferry terminal, you might as well try one of their signature drinks. Just make sure you drop the golf cart off first!

Visit the Wrigley Memorial and Botanical Gardens

beautiful botanical garden

Yes, that Wrigley. The Wrigley Memorial and Botanic Garden on Catalina Island honors William Wrigley Jr., the chewing gum magnate. The 37-acre garden boasts a variety of plant species, including native plants, and provides a serene atmosphere to appreciate the island’s beauty.

Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the island and the Pacific Ocean from the memorial’s location, a popular spot for photographers.

It’s relatively easy to get to the memorial from the town of Avalon, making it a convenient stop for most visitors to the island.

Walk Around Town

walking around Avalon

Avalon is the largest town on Catalina Island and is a great place to spend the day shopping and dining. The city is home to a variety of boutiques, restaurants, and other attractions and is an excellent place to

While walking around town, be sure to visit the Catalina Island Museum . The museum is excellent for learning about the island’s history, culture, and celebrity ties. The museum features exhibits on the island’s indigenous peoples and its history as a popular vacation destination.

Adults are $18, and children 15 and under are free.

Visit the Catalina Island Casino

Catalina Island Casino

The Catalina Island Casino is a historic building on the island built in the 1920s. But don’t let the name fool you. It is not a traditional casino because it does not have slot machines or table games.

Instead, it serves as a multi-purpose entertainment venue, hosting live music, dance performances, and movies. The casino also has a ballroom, a popular venue for weddings and other events.

The building itself is an architectural masterpiece featuring a stunning Art Deco design. It is a popular tourist attraction on the island and worth visiting.

The 45-minute tour is $24.95 for adults and $22.95 for children and the military.

Tips for Visiting Catalina Island by Cruise Ship

navigator of the seas sunset

When visiting the island via cruise ship, passengers must take a tender. Be sure to bring essentials like sunscreen, hats, water, and any necessary medications for the day. You can leave your passport on the cruise ship because this is part of the United States, and it’s not required.

If you have enough time, an inland tour to see the island’s wildlife, including the famous Catalina bison, is worth considering.

Don’t forget to pack comfortable walking shoes and layers, as evenings can get cool depending on the season.

Check your itinerary. Not every west coast cruise itinerary stops in Catalina. The stop is more reserved for shorter Mexico voyages or one-off repositioning sailings. If you are going on an Alaska cruise from the West Coast, chances are Catalina Island won’t be on your itinerary.

What cruise lines call to Catalina Island?

Carnival Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean International, Norwegian Cruise Line, Disney Cruise Line, Holland America Line, Princess Cruises, and Celebrity Cruises call at Catalina Island seasonally or year-round.

Where do cruise ships dock at Catalina Island?

Large cruise ships can not dock at Catalina Island. An anchorage is located off the coast of Avalon, where cruise passengers board a ferry. Once you board the water shuttle, the ride is approximately 10 minutes from the cruise ship to the island. The water shuttles dock at Green Pleasure Pier.

Do I need a passport to go to Catalina Island?

No. Catalina Island is part of the state of California. A passport would only be required if you’re taking an ocean cruise and the cruise operator has a passport requirement to sail.

Avalon Bay Catalina Casino Catalina California

"Casino" is derived from the Latin word for "gathering place" and that's exactly what Catalina Casino is. Opened in 1929, this Art Deco masterpiece is one of the most famous attractions on the island, but you won't find any gambling in here. Instead, take a tour back in time to explore the world's largest circular ballroom or catch a film in the original cinema.

Catalina Island Cruise Port Guide

Catalina Island is the only island with a cruise port on a Mexican Riviera cruise. No other port is on an island. It’s also the only port not in Mexico.

But this California island is a popular stop anyway on some short-term Mexican Riviera cruises.

It is a common port of call for Mexican Riviera cruises that depart from Long Beach, Los Angeles and San Francisco and that last three to five days. These quick cruises often go only to Catalina and Ensenada on the Baja Peninsula of Mexico before returning to their embarkation ports.

The most common Mexican Riviera cruises, which last six days and seven nights, rarely visit Catalina even from the nearby Long Beach. It is never a port of call for cruises out of San Diego, which lies 80 miles to the south.

Still, anyone who takes a cruise out of Long Beach or the nearby San Pedro district in Los Angeles can visit Catalina by ferry if they have an extra day available before or after their cruise.

Where is Catalina Island?

Catalina island cruise port map.

Also known as Santa Catalina Island, this rocky destination is about 29 miles southeast of Long Beach, California. It is 143 miles north of Ensenada, Mexico, another popular port of call on short-term Mexican Riviera cruises. The island, which is 22 miles long and eight miles wide at its widest point, has a population of about 4,000 people.

They are mainly concentrated in the island’s only incorporated city at Avalon on the southeast coast and the village of Two Harbors on the northwest coast. Cruise ships anchor near Avalon and tender (boat) their passengers to Pleasure Pier at the Avalon docks.

Attractions and Shore Excursions

Walking around attractions.

Avalon has the usual shops and restaurants to serve cruise passengers. There is a local museum 217 Metropole Ave. with a history of the island.

The Catalina Chimes Tower on Chimes Tower Road is a picturesque landmark that rings every 15 minutes. Getting there is an uphill climb from the docks, but it offers nice views of Avalon and the harbor.

Otherwise, the city is too small for many major attractions. But there are a few smaller ones that aren’t too far away.

Catalina Casino is a half mile and a quick walk north of the docks. It is easily accessible via Casino Way Road, which begins at the harbourfront.

Like most casinos, it is free in one sense and not free in another. Visitors can enter for free, but they may have less money in their wallets when they leave again. Yes, it’s a casino, but island visitors go there because it is one of the most prominent attractions on the island.

Shore Excursions

The Wrigley Memorial and Botanical Gardens are nearly two miles southwest of the docks. Although the distance will discourage most walkers, cruise visitors can get there more easily by renting bicycles or golf carts that are common in Avalon.

Anyone who wants just a guided scenic tour of the island can spend about $30 to take one.

These bus tours last about an hour and a half and include the pretty Avalon Theatre, Wrigley estate and Catalina Casino.

The island has a zipline facility at Descanso Beach with five lines and a total of 3,400 feet. Zipliners travel up to 45 miles per hour and as high as 300 feet over Descanso Canyon. The cost is about $125 per person.

Adventurous visitors can try the “Catalina Aerial Adventure” with five challenging ziplines and suspension bridges. The 2.5-hour excursion costs about $60 per person.

Otherwise, standard shore excursions include snorkeling, kayaking, whale watching, dolphin viewing, scuba, glass bottom boats and parasailing.

Beaches Near the Cruise Port

Avalon has three small beaches right at the harbourfront and a larger one just north of the casino.

Step Beach, although small, is conveniently located right at the harbor front. South and Middle beaches are a short walk to the south of Step Beach. All three have lifeguards during the summer. They may get crowded during cruise ship visits.

Walkers can easily reach Descanso Beach, which is about three fourths of a mile north of Pleasure Pier. Otherwise, they can take a free shuttle during the summer from the casino. This private beach has a $2 entry fee.

Getting Around / Transportation

Car are rare on Catalina Island. Taxis meet all arriving ships. A taxi stand is at the end of Crescent Avenue by US Bank, according to the island’s Chamber of Commerce.

A public bus serves Avalon on a fixed bus route from the Cabrillo Mole to the left of visitor’s center where the ferries arrive. It goes to Casino Way and up the canyon to the Wrigley Memorial and Botanic Garden.

The bus is $2 per ride; children under 5 are free. The Catalina Island Company has free shuttle rides to Descanso Beach in the summer months. It includes a stop at the Catalina Casino. The bus departs from the Via Casino arch at the beginning of Casino Way.

Ferries to Catalina are available at San Pedro, Long Beach, Newport Beach and Dana Point. Rides last an hour to an hour and a half depending on the starting point. Round trip prices are about $75 per person with discounts for children and senior citizens.

Catalina is close to Los Angeles and shares much of the same weather. It is mildly warm throughout the year. It also has a low risk of rain throughout much of the year.

Daytime temperatures range from the high 60s Fahrenheit in the winter to the low 80s in the summer.

The island has a mild and brief rainy season in January and February. Rainfall is virtually nil from May through September.

Los Angeles

cruise around catalina island

Los Angeles is the second-most populous city in the United States, after New York City, and the most populous city in the Western United States. With an estimated population of four million, Los Angeles is the largest and most populous city in the state of California and the cultural, financial, and commercial center of Southern California. Nicknamed the "City of Angels" partly because of its name's Spanish meaning, Los Angeles is known for its Mediterranean climate, ethnic diversity, and sprawling metropolis. The city is also one of the most substantial economic engines within the nation, with a diverse economy in a broad range of professional and cultural fields. Los Angeles is also famous as the home of Hollywood, a major center of the world entertainment industry. A global city, it has been ranked 6th in the Global Cities Index and 9th in the Global Economic Power Index. The Los Angeles combined statistical area also has a gross metropolitan product of $831 billion, making it the third-largest in the world, after the Greater Tokyo and New York metropolitan areas. Los Angeles hosted the 1932 and 1984 Summer Olympics and will host the event for a third time in 2028.

Santa Catalina

cruise around catalina island

Just off the coast of Southern California is an island that looks much like California did two hundred years ago, a wilderness of oak, cactus, and sage, an island with secluded coves surrounded by ocean with lush kelp forests and abundant sea life. This is Santa Catalina Island, a wilderness preserved for all to enjoy. Yet, Catalina has all the accommodations and recreational activities of a modern beach resort.

Hey, there's more to this town than it just being the finish line for the annual Newport-Ensenada Race! The City of Ensenada has completed a total renovation of Primera, the main street downtown. Enjoy a stroll down the cobblestone sidewalk complete with outdoor cafes, interesting shops, strolling musicians and street vendors. The malecon (harbor boardwalk) renovation was completed last year and provides a beautifully landscaped walk along the harbor front to the Ventana Del Mar Plaza with its huge Mexican flag. From there, you can look across the rio at the new small craft harbor nestled in the middle of the new cruise ship docks. It will be interesting to watch the progress on this new endeavor. The story is that in order to expand the cargo port on the north side of the harbor, the developers had to relocate the passenger ships' dock and provide some type of recreational asset for the city. It looks to be a good solution. Ensenada is also a swell place to take possession of your new boat (more on that later), get a new bottom job for your old boat or set as your destination for an extended coastal cruise, a fun weekend road trip or the start of some long distance cruising! The people of Ensenada are trying hard to improve their city, both for turistas, a big part of their income and for themselves and their families. We have seen improvements which are good, and yet some loss of the "Mexico-ness" in some of the tourist areas. We have met a lot of the residents and business people and want to thank them for their hospitality. As visitors, it is our obligation to live up to the Bienvenidos and the Mi Casa es Su Casa that have been extended to us.

Five New Reasons to Visit Catalina Island

A big thanks to Catalina Island Company for arranging my stay so I could provide this detailed review of my experience.

Flashbacks of Italy came to mind as we spiraled up and around switchback turns from the harbor town of Avalon. The cliff-hugging ocean vista views were certainly worth these fearful moments, expressing “OMG” aloud as we whizzed above the aquamarine crystal-clear waters below, where white boats accented the dazzling blue hues and homes hung off the curved hugging hillsides. Just 26 miles off the California coast, Catalina Island feels worlds away from mainland Los Angeles. RELATED: Things to Do on Catalina Island

We hit the bumpy dirt Stagecoach Road summit in a 1993 fully restored bus named Betsy, driven by an expert, experienced storyteller with many cautionary tales of approaching and talking to the island’s wild bison. As we bounced along, we admired the raw beauty of the land, untouched and rugged with sloped rolling green hills, more verdant than ever due to recent rains. The air felt so fresh that I wondered if breathing deeply here might prolong my life.

We’ve experienced a similar adventure on a biofuel Hummer, in search of the free-roaming American Bison (about 50 descendants left from a movie shoot in the 1920s) and the island’s endemic fox – a once-endangered species that are just as curious as us.  One evening at dusk at Banning House Lodge in Two Harbors, five of the petite cat-like creatures with blackberry noses sniffed us out over sunset wine on the terrace. They’re adorable!

This time, we arrived in Catalina to venture an hour into the interior to experience El Rancho Escondido , the Wrigley family’s hidden ranch, now open to the public for the first time ever. The tour, offered by Catalina Island Company, was oh so much more than we imagined.

Pro Tip:  To get to Catalina Island, book one of the eight modern Catalina Express vessels that depart from Long Beach, San Pedro, and Dana Point year-round. Be sure to upgrade the hour-long journey on one of their sleek smooth-riding boats with comfortable seating in the Commodore Lounge. For $20 more per ticket, enjoy priority boarding and check-in privileges, with complimentary beverages and snacks served right to your seat. Bubbly, beer, and wine are among the options. For added privacy and exclusivity, upgrade to the Captain’s Lounge with your six closest friends. Book tickets in advance as these upgrades sell out fairly quickly and are rarely available on the day of departure. RELATED: Destination Guide: Catalina Island

Venture into the island’s interior to a Hidden Ranch

Built in 1932 by Philip and Helen Wrigley, the island’s Arabian horse ranch was once used for a Wild West Cattle Show, as Philip Wrigley (who died in 1977) wanted to develop a place in the interior of the island as a tourist destination.  The couple set out to develop a breeding program for Santa Catalina Island’s wild horses. By the 1950s, their efforts evolved into breeding champion Arabian horses that were exhibited at shows and competitions across the US. El Rancho became a world-class horse ranch that dignitaries came to visit in later years to get away from it all.

The spectacular landmark, nearly a century old, with a Spanish-style courtyard and stables, recently underwent a two-year remodel. The three- to four-hour tour includes a horse exhibition where guests learn about horses’ body functions, behavioral habits, how different types of horses are used, and horse ranch riding techniques. We loved being able to pet the horses and take photos with them. The golden, sleek, honey-colored stallion – similar to a palomino – was beautiful, while the wild speed of the white Arabian mare was impressive to witness. Once Palomino and feral horses could be found on the ranch because they could be let loose, but in the 1930s, they decided a higher class of horse was needed, so they brought an Arabian stallion named Kabba to the island in 1931. Today, many horses on the island are descendants of those bred in the mid-20 th century.

An impressive Saddle & Trophy Room houses one-of-a-kind saddles, trophies won, and many personal Western memorabilia and photos from the Wrigleys. In addition to serving as a home for the family’s horses, the estate features vines of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Zinfandel, planted in 2008 for Rusack Vineyards, who determined the same type of grapes that grow well in Burgundy grow well in Catalina. Their sustainable practices deliver handcrafted award-winning wines with a tasting room and winery on the central coast.

The second stop at The Bishop’s Chapel, with original stained-glass windows, comes with more awe-inspiring views. Learn about Jory’s Bell, the 130-year-old Baptismal Font, and the cross that once sat atop the entry doors to the downtown Los Angeles Cathedral of St. Paul’s, having spent 30 years on Santa Cruz Island before being refurbished and gifted to The Bishop’s Chapel in 2021.

If time permits, the tour may stop at the private “Airport in the Sky” in the center of the island to learn about the island’s exciting aviation history and grab one of their Killer Cookies or Bison Burgers to go.

The Wrigley family has preserved the island’s natural beauty, deeding 42,000 acres to the Catalina Island Conservancy, a non-profit they established in 1972. Their daughter, Alison Rigley Rusack, and her husband, Geoff Rusack, have continued to serve as custodians of the island.

Pro Tips: Wear sturdy shoes. Bring binoculars. Close your eyes if you are scared of heights. Use the bathroom beforehand, although clean bathrooms are available at the ranch. Find the local Rusack wine at the Vons store in town.

Sip a flight of California craft brews from Flx Biergarten

This new colorful open-air Biergarten right in town offers a variety of exceptional SoCal suds with fire pits, outdoor games, and even beer pong. On a summer day, you’ll love the Firestone Cali Squeeze Blood Orange Hefeweizen (an island favorite) or Captain Fatty’s Brewery Beach Beer from Goleta with a lemon cucumber aftertaste. They have cultivated a selection of brews that will appeal to all. Check out the fun beer tap handles like Beachwood Brewing’s golden trophies with delicious West Coast IPAs. Wine, seltzer, kombucha, and nonalcoholic options are also available.

You may notice the Flx bus has the same logo as the new Biergarten, taking its name from the iconic 50s Flxible buses that carried tourists on the streets of Avalon and the island’s interior.

Pro Tip: Order a beer flight to try many unique SoCal craft beers and pair them with snacks like Spicy Teriyaki Jerky and mustard pretzels.

Dive deep into history with a self-guided Catalina “Casino” Tour

Step back in time and appreciate Catalina’s most well-known landmark with a $20 self-guided tour . Explore the historic building, watch films from the silent movie era in the cinema, and marvel at the sweeping views of Avalon Bay from the second-floor veranda. Built in 1929, the “Casino” – originally from Italian as a gathering or entertaining place – is an entertainment destination and not a gambling venue. This is where the red-carpet movie premier was born, where old-school Hollywood starlets flocked, and where the first sound and motion picture theater began.

Today, admire the Art Deco details of the past – like hand-painted murals at the entrance, ornamental light fixtures, the original pipe organ, and the auditorium’s murals depicting the history of the island, California, and the progress of man. On the top level in the Casino, imagine 4,000 people dancing the night away to Big Band music in the world’s largest circular ballroom.

Pro Tip: Photo opportunities abound on the top level with soaring columns and views of the entire harbor.

Explore Ocean Wonders at the Dome Theater and New Exhibits at the Catalina Museum for Art and History

Find Chicago Cubs memorabilia at the Catalina Museum for Art and History along with films about Catalina and the people who’ve inhabited the island. Permanent exhibits include Dale Chihuly’s Aureolin’s yellow spire chandelier and the Roy Rose Sculpture Garden. The Cabinet of Curiosities, in honor of its 70 th anniversary, displays 70 objects showcasing the rich heritage of the island over 70 years.

Catch two new exhibits at the Catalina Museum of Art and History coming this year:

Ann Weber: 26 Miles ( March 23 – August 2, 2024)

The voyage of her totemic sculptures across the San Pedro Channel.

Sarah Kaizer: Rare Air ( June 8 – September 8, 2024)

Original gouache and ink artwork from the book Rare Air, with an interactive component for audiences to recognize and appreciate the diversity of winged creatures that share our world.

Nearby, find the Ocean Wonders at the Dome Theater to experience “IMMERSED: Ocean Wonders” in an immersive bubble that simulates scuba diving through the world's oceans. Perfect for young kids or those who aren’t ready to kayak, snorkel, or scuba offshore just yet, the IMMERSED: Ocean Wonders 30-minute virtual dive may whet your desire to explore the island. The full 360-degree film captures moments from all angles and offers total immersion in Catalina’s lush kelp forests, getting up close and personal with majestic whale sharks, playful sea lions and dolphins, bull sharks, manta rays, and a rare dugong.

Pro Tip:   Ten percent of Ocean Wonders ticket sales are donated to conservation groups affiliated with filming locations. Open from 12 noon to 8:30 PM; arrive 15 minutes before show time.

Stay at the recently renovated Hotel Atwater

Right in the town center, in the heart of Avalon, and steps from all of the restaurants, shops, and land and ocean excursions, a recent hotel renovation stays true to the Wrigley family legacy. Hotel Atwater is decorated in refreshing oceanic style décor and showcases a large, bold, colored painting that anchors the check-in, showing what Catalina may have once looked like long ago. Established in 1920, Hotel Atwater was the first hotel built by the Catalina Island Company under the ownership of William Wrigley, Jr., who named the hotel after Helen Atwater Wrigley, wife of his son Philip Knight Wrigley.

The airy and bright lobby is a nice place to rest, with historic Wrigley artifacts such as talented musician Helen Atwater Wrigley’s prized accordion, built by hand in Stradella, Italy. In the lobby’s bathroom, have a chuckle and look closely at the wallpaper depicting cheeky whimsical animals behaving badly - smoking and drinking champagne.

A stay here means sleeping peacefully in a comfy bed with luxurious linens, in one of 95 modern rooms and suites. Even 2 mini bottles of bubbly await in the room’s fridge. Enjoy added perks like a $20 daily restaurant credit for dining and drinks, 15% off Catalina Island Company activities and tours, use of beach towels, and luggage service to and from the ferry terminal.

Next door to the lobby, guests can find the hotel’s new Bistro at the Atwater Café – serving yummy coffee medleys, scrumptious pastries, warm quiches, and breakfast sandwiches and burritos – perfect to take on the go to the beach or elsewhere. Try the Machaca Breakfast Burrito with shredded beef and Oaxacan cheese stuffed inside the scrambled eggs and cilantro onion mix. Here, a neon sign reminds you “In All the World, No Place Like This.”

Pro Tips: Mosey a block over for lunch or dinner at Avalon Grille for exceptional meats, local fish like fresh seared yellowtail atop truffle mashed potatoes and pork belly bites, and the island’s famous Buffalo Milk cocktail – created in the 1970s – a boozy milkshake made with vodka, coffee liqueur, crème de Banana, Crème de Cacao, vanilla ice cream, banana, and whipped cream doused with nutmeg. Yum! Nearby, Bluewater Grill serves up seafood and clam chowder and Descanso Beach Club is a great beachfront option for lunch on the water.

Catalina is a memorable destination any time of year. While summer is the most popular time to visit, May and October may be the best months, with great weather and fewer crowds. Special events include weekend festivities like marathons, jazz festivals, craft festivals, and the ever-popular Catalina Wine Mixer.

Local Pro Tips:

Visit mid-week when there are fewer crowds and better deals.

Book the Sea Wolf semi-submersible adventure to get face-to-face with marine life as you cruise 5 feet below.

Take the yellow Cyclone power boat ferry to Two Harbors, on the other end of the island, for a day or overnight. It leaves early in the morning and returns to the main harbor of Avalon around 4 PM.

Restaurants are upgrading. Lobster Trap should be open by summer as they are renovating and expanding with a sushi bar. Antonio’s is taking over the old Pier 24 opening with a new menu concept by summer.

Browse the shops along Las Olas Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale, and explore the canals by gondola. Take a boat ride through the watery Everglades in search of alligators.
