Few can resist the come-on of Miss Hattie’s Bordello Museum, which operated as a downtown house of pleasure from 1896 until the Texas Rangers shut it down in 1946. Rooms re-create the plush velvet look considered essential back in the day, but the best feature is the stories of the women and their clients. Tours last 35 minutes, and can’t be reserved; simply meet at Legend Jewelers, next door.

Miss Hattie's shows up on top things up do in San Angelo. I went on a Thursday afternoon and made it before 4pm, so I was able to take a tour. They unlock the bordello take you upstairs, and have a self directed tour. One of the staff from the jewelry store is available to answer questions. You can walk into all the rooms and take photos inside. Some of the furniture is original. I loved the ceilings. It was a fun place to visit on an afternoon. It took me about 30 minutes to go through the museum.

We had lunch there yesterday and the service and the food was awesome. I would definitely recommend this place if you're in San Angelo, TX.

"TEXAS, has a whorehouse in it..." What a fun place and a great tour. This was really fun and you not only got to see it, but you also got some of the fun history behind the place as well. Great naughty stories, wonderful antiques to see, but NO NAMES are given! Gotta protect the innocent, you know... This place is a MUST STOP if you are in San Angelo. Great times for sure! Be sure to plan around the times that they have tours for the day. Start in the jewelry store next door, which was also great as well.

Well worth a few bucks! I've read and watched westerns for a few decades so it was fascinating to step into this sordid piece of history. The tour is self guided with just a little bit of information but felt just right to me.

San Angelo is a fun town to visit, especially the downtown area where Miss Hattie's is located. Also in this area is a neighborhood pub, still operating general store with some of the best coffee and fudge, and cool antique and clothing shops you should take some time to wander through. You buy your tour passes at the jewelry store next-door which adds on to the small town charm in my opinion. They give you wooden tokens that mimic the ones men would buy back in the days the bordello operated to exchange for "favors" from the ladies. Miss Hattie apparently would charge the men based on their daily income. If you made a quarter a day, then that's what you paid. If you could afford a dollar, then your price reflected that. Never one to turn down a profit, she even installed a peep hole in the bathroom that looked into the adjoining bedroom. This was reserved for the more aggressive/rough around the edges men so she could still take their money while ensuring the safety of her girls. It's still there today and I have to admit, I respect a lady with a head for business. Our group met in the jewelry store before the tour started and took a moment to look around and browse their lovely pieces. My favorites are the ones with pearls from the nearby Concho River. They have a light purple/pink hue and are absolutely gorgeous. They had two girls leading our tour that day (one was training), and they did a great job explaining the history and answering questions. The bordello itself is only one floor, so most of the time you get to actually walk around on your own and explore which I thought was really cool. Each of the rooms have cards you can read with more information, and all the furniture and decorations are original (except the mattresses, don't worry) ;-) I don't want to give too much of the history away because it's such an interesting place that you really should check out to learn more. They encourage pictures here too and will even take shots for you on one of the original couches. Be sure to also ask about their haunted history. One of the rooms I couldn't even step into because it gave me too much of an eerie vibe (the poker room), and I later found out was the most active so perhaps that's why! We had our own activity happen while the tour guides were speaking. The downstairs door below us randomly clicked and creaked itself open on its own. The funny thing was this wasn't too long after they had demonstrated to us what the buzzer sounded like that Miss Hattie would ring whenever an invasion was about to happen so the girls could snatch their belongs and book it. Believer of the paranormal or not, it was still spooky. Come check it out and see for yourself! Kids are welcome on the tour too, just be prepared to answer lots of uncomfortable questions. Or you could simply say the rooms were used for pillow fights. Either way, you'll enjoy taking a step back in time.

I'm not sure what the point of posting updated hours and tour times is if the business is not adhering to them ‍ I'll gladly revise this review the next time I come to San Angelo (assuming it's open).

This place is fun, but ultimately built on false advertising. There was never a brothel here, so while the stories are fun, they're not true. It's nice that it's a cheap outing, and certainly entertaining, but don't go here expecting accuracy.

SUPER FUN Tour!!! I took the tour twice and I had a great time on both times! Such great stories on the house's background and the "girls" that worked there. The restaurant is couple doors down, so it was great to be able to stop by and have a nice lunch.

I do enjoy a good brothel. Who doesn't? This place rich in history and naughty stories has plenty to see. Bring your camera and prepare to stay at least 20 minutes. I enjoyed the bordello.

After you manage the 22 stairs UP, it is a delightful step back in time! Victorian era decor with a splash of bawdiness. Miss Sunshine, who have us a tour was informative, knowledgeable, and humorous. And the price is certainly fair. Just wish they had an elevator. Don't you imagine some of their clientele did too!

Backstory and Context

History of the Frontier Brothel

The history of Miss Hattie’s Bordello begins with the establishment of San Angelo by Bartholomew J. DeWitt in 1867, and although it was quite rugged at the time, the construction of the railroad two decades later brought hoards of settlers and entrepreneurs moving into the Texas city. To support the population growth, there was a prominent business boom in the 1890s, and this boom included the growth of brothels and saloons.

In 1902, saloon-owner Mr. Hatton and his wife purchased a two-story building on Concho Avenue, and after Mr. and Mrs. Hatton divorced that year, she received the upper floor of the building. In an attempt to support herself and supply the needs of cowboys, ranchers, and local businessmen, Mrs. Hatton (now Miss Hattie) refashioned the upper floor and opened her brothel. The women who worked here charged between $1 and $2 for their services, of which they received 50%.

As the prohibition came to San Angelo in the 1919, the brothel thrived and was connected to the local speakeasies and other brothels linked throughout San Angelo, and Concho became San Angelo’s unofficial vice district. Miss Hattie’s political and business connections in San Angelo allowed the brothel to continue operation well after the prohibition, but by 1952, the brothel shut down.

Museum Tour

The historic building sat empty for nearly two decades after it shut down, and in the 1970s, the old brothel officially opened as a museum to pay tribute to and educate visitors on the time period as well as the role of prostitution in the frontier town. In fact, the brothel still features its original furnishings, including bed frames, the ceiling, and much more.

Tours of the museum can take about 30 minutes, though visitors are encouraged to explore and digest each of the five bedrooms as long as they would like. These bedrooms focus on individual stories of the women who lived and worked in the building, and the furniture and other furnishings remain original to either the time period or the brothel itself. Tickets to the museum can be purchased next to the museum at Legend Jewelers. 2

The Strange and Unusual at Miss Hattie’s in San Angelo

miss hattie's tour

CLICK HERE for High School Football Scores

SAN ANGELO, TX – The buildings in downtown San Angelo are rich with history, and in every crack and crevice exists a story that even technology and progress can’t destroy.

Of course, San Angeloans love to tell the story of Miss Hattie’s, built in the late 1800s, and a place that once entertained the men of San Angelo. However, now it's a museum. Not to mention, when one walks into Miss Hattie’s Restaurant, they can't help but feel a sense of pride at the gleaming polished wooden floors and lights that gleam with a natural phosphorescence. Miss Hattie’s is a great place overall to step back in time and bask in the warmth of the souls who dwell there--living and dead.

Because of the history of San Angelo, it’s little wonder many people report the strange and unusual, especially in places like Miss Hattie’s. In fact, many people who never believed in the paranormal claim their experiences in San Angelo changed their perceptions. While for others who believe, something about San Angelo has compelled them at some point to explore the strange and unusual.

This includes Ray Theiss.

Ray no longer lives in San Angelo, but he said he was lucky enough to call it home for almost six years. He said he has always been fascinated by ghost stories, and one experience at Miss Hattie’s Museum was “immensely strange.”

“I’ve always been a history nut, and I’ve always enjoyed being a reenactor,” Ray said. “When I moved to San Angelo in 2008, I started looking for a reenacting unit to join. There was the one at Fort Concho, but I wasn’t real sure I wanted to join that one or not, so instead, I found the Concho Cowboy Company.”

Ray said he was invited to a Christmas social hosted by the CCC at Miss Hattie’s Museum in December of that year. He went dressed in his best Old West outfit, and he noted everyone was having a great time. The party went into the late evening hours.

“We were all taking pictures in the museum, really adding an Old West flare to the place,” Ray continued. “Not long into the photo sessions, two guys were asked to pose for a photograph near the stairwell that heads down from the second floor to Concho Avenue.”

Ray noted that the woman taking the picture was using a digital camera and snapped a shot of the two reenactors with the top of the staircase behind them.

“When reviewing the picture, the lady’s eyes got real big,” said Ray.

When asked what was wrong, the woman said there was another man in the photo.

“We gathered around her, looking at the screen, and sure enough, just behind the two reenactors was another guy dressed in Victorian/Old West clothing,” Ray explained. “He was wearing a black vest with a white shirt, which was pretty common apparel for San Angelo back in the time that Miss Hattie’s operated.”

Ray added that the unidentified man in the picture had his back turned to the camera, and was on his way down the stairs.

“He was plain as day in the picture, and looked as if he were a part of the reenacting crowd,” Ray said.

He said later, when the group showed the picture to the curator of Miss Hattie’s, she knew right away who he was.

“I can’t recall his name now, but he was once the caretaker of the women at Miss Hattie’s,” Ray stated. “Only problem is, he’d been dead for almost a hundred years prior to that picture!”

The museum isn’t the only place where the strange and unusual have been reported.

Brenda Gunter, owner of Miss Hattie’s Café and Saloon, said so many people, including her staff, have witnessed strange events.

Brenda said six or seven years ago, a woman with a group of people taking a tour stopped at the main door and said, “I can’t go in there.”

The woman said she could sense all the spirits in the building, and it was so overwhelming. Thus, she refused to proceed.

Brenda also said once Bishop Michael Pfeifer was at Miss Hattie’s, and she, the Bishop, and her husband were standing near the bar area. He asked the couple, “Do you realize there are two ghosts at the bar having drinks with us?”

He said both the ghosts were male, and the couple didn’t have to worry because they were friendly.

“And he had never heard the story about the ghosts,” Brenda said. “It wasn’t like someone led him to come up and say that kind of thing.”

Brenda added that it’s normal for people to tell her these types of things.

“As they say, if the rock walls could talk,” Brenda laughed.

Another time, Brenda said her kitchen staff reported being in the kitchen area getting ready for customers, and all of a sudden the radio came blasting on.

Gabriel Chavez, 30, who has worked for Miss Hattie’s off and on since 2001 said one night, he, Chef Mike, and a man named Gary were standing in the bar area. It was late at night, and the only light that on was in the bar area.

“All of a sudden, it sounded like something was getting dragged across the floor,” Gabriel said. “This was like at 12:30 at night.”

Gabriel said there was no one else at the restaurant, so there was no valid explanation for the sound. He said it sounded like something heavy dragging across the floor, but nothing was physically there.

Gabriel also said one of the manager’s brothers used to work at Miss Hattie’s when it was Spaghetti Western, and he reported hearing similar things. Too many incidents have occurred.

“This happened the other night,” Gabriel continued. “The dish washer was in the restroom, the manager was in the office, and I was back there wiping tables; so I’m wiping [one table] down and I hear by the side door somebody whispering.”

Gabriel said he thought it was the dish washer messing with him, so he turned, but didn’t see anything. Thus, he continued wiping, and that’s when he heard whispering right behind him.

Once more he didn’t see anyone, so he asked his fellow colleagues if they had been near him, or if they had whispered something to him. They said no.

“It’s just things like that,” Gabriel said, in regards to the types of strange things that happen.

Gabriel said these occurrences happen occasionally, and lately, staff have been seeing a lot of shadows in the kitchen.

Gabriel noted that he hasn’t seen anyone in dated clothing, but overall, the events that have taken place have indeed been strange.

Brenda said she hasn’t witnessed ghosts per say, but the people who tell their stories are so convincing that you would be hard pressed not to believe them.

“It’s something that you can tell by their expression that they believe it,” she said.

Additionally, one person took a picture of an area of the restaurant and captured something interesting on film. She also said a waitress who said she was at the restaurant late one night closing up saw something “flash” right by her, and it was cold. Brenda added that was a time where cold wasn’t part of the climate, so there was no explanation for it.

Brenda said there are just some stories people can’t make up.

“It’s real,” she said.

To add to that, Brenda said some early morning cooks will be in the kitchen, and all of a sudden they’ll feel cold air go through the kitchen, and they can hear pots dropping.

“There was no reason for that pot to fall,” she noted. “It wasn’t in a location, or anyone going by, that would cause that pot to drop.”

With all the stories told, however, no one has reported the spirits to be malevolent or evil. Also, with all the stories told, many paranormal groups would contact Brenda to come run tests at Miss Hattie’s, but she said that doesn’t happen as frequently as it used to.

Ghosts or no ghosts, Brenda said she loves knowing that people can sit at Miss Hattie’s and know that way back in 1884, there were people who physically walked and worked in the same building, making a living. Newly constructed buildings have no history, but buildings like Miss Hattie’s are priceless when it comes to that. Every space has a story.

Speaking of historical spaces, Brenda also showed LIVE! the area in the restaurant where the underground tunnel is located (see image above with a table). The hollow echoes filled the room as she knocked on the areas.

“Without a doubt, that tunnel was used,” she said. “It’s kind of neat just knowing it’s there.”

Of course, that tunnel opens up even more possibilities to the strange and unusual.

If you have a story you would like to share about the strange and unusual in San Angelo, contact me at [email protected] .

And if you’re dying to spend a night like a Texas soldier, the fort will even let you stay the night in the Officer’s Quarters.

Sheep Statues

Since San Angelo is known as the “Wool and Mohair Capital of the World,” you (or rather “ewe”) will want to check out the Sheep Statues scattered all across the city. Don’t be baah-shful, get a picture with the “Gold Rush” Sheep or the “Coat of Many Colors” Sheep.

Explore the Secret Tunnels Connecting to Miss Hattie’s Bordello in Downtown San Angelo, Texas

Downtown San Angelo, Texas , like many cities, has tunnels underneath them. But unlike many cities, the tunnels were lost and forgotten until recently. New owners of the Jessie Rose Mercantile discovered tunnels underneath their business. Barbara Strain, owner of Sassy Fox and Jessie Rose came across these tunnels when she purchased the property. Strain says that the tunnels crisscross under the streets through many businesses, including a bank, the Cactus Hotel , and importantly, Miss Hattie's bordello.

This is major for San Angelo, as the men who used to run the tunnels are well known in San Angelo and local family members asked to keep the anonymity of the men.

It was strange to be in the basement knowing the history. The 'Wild West' era in San Angelo was notorious for murders, gambling, crime, and of course, brothels. Much of the notorious and nefarious activity is centered on Historic Block One , along Concho Avenue, north of the Concho River and riverwalk.

Commenters to the video had plenty of tunnel lore to share:

There used to be fallout shelters under the city hall & old sears buildings. The 1936 floods could have wiped most of downtown out. I would check under the oldest churches downtown. There are many more tunnels than what is told here. I heard from an elderly man several years ago that there were tunnels under Fort Concho.

Owner of Miss Hattie's Bordello Museum says ladies of the night still roam the halls

miss hattie's tour

A dimly lit hallway stretches above a downtown San Angelo jewelry store, leading to rooms that highlight yesteryear's infamous ladies of the night.

Miss Hattie's Bordello Museum, above Legend Jewelers at 18 E. Concho Ave., remains long after the Texas Rangers shut the bordello down in the late 1940s or early '50s. But neither the Rangers nor death could keep the former employees from walking the halls, according to some.

MORE: Everything you know about Miss Hattie's is wrong

Mark Priest, owner of Legend Jewelers below the museum, said he and his employees have experienced the antics of the building's spectral residents.

"A number of years ago I was up in Miss Goldie's room repairing a couch and a woman's hand brushed down my arm," said Priest, who has owned the building for 21 years. "It freaked me out."

Priest and his employees take turns giving tours of the upstairs museum, which opened in the 1970s. Over the years, they have seen orbs or wispy figures in mirrors, have witnessed heavy doors opening untouched and heard unexplained footsteps.

Priest said he did not believe the building was haunted until his first encounter.

"The activity was stronger when we were first here," Priest said. "I'm down here 10-13 hours a day and all I know is these things happen. Our analogy to ghosts is that you just don't get a choice. It is what it is."

Legend Jewelers employee Katie Harmon has had her share of experiences on both floors.

"Whatever it is, they're friendly," Harmon said. "We like them, except for when they set off the alarms or move stuff."

About 10 years ago, Priest had a paranormal investigation crew from Fort Worth explore the museum overnight. The crew members said they had paranormal experiences, but caught nothing on their equipment. Once the crew left, the spirits decided it was payback time.

Priest was at home on a Sunday afternoon when he got an alert from the museum. Never having had false alarms there, Priest and the police rushed over and found nothing.

About 20-25 minutes later, it happened again. This time, the alarm said there was glass breakage in the gambling room, where there is no glass. Priest reset the alarm and returned home, only to get the alert again, but in the living room for glass breakage and motion.

"I told Laura when I got home and she said, 'You made them mad,'" Priest said. "Whatever presence up there played with the investigators, and this was payback on me."

Since then, Priest has not allowed investigators to explore the museum.

Objects often disappear and reappear in the jewelry store. Harmon remembered a mysterious disappearance of flags, which turned up a month and a half later.

"We got several flags, flattened them in books, and the flags were gone the next day," Harmon said. "The books were still there. We looked everywhere, but the flags were gone. At least they return them eventually."

Jewels have also gone missing and returned the next day on the jeweler's bench. Priest believes the spirits of the bordello women enjoy the gems, and that is why the stones occasionally disappear.

The most common paranormal activity is sounds, Priest said. Employees will set up the jewelry and hear footsteps running upstairs at 9 a.m.

The employees and owner all agree that whatever haunts the building is good.

For those interested in seeing the museum, tours are offered at the top of the hour 2-4 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday and 1-4 p.m. Friday-Saturday.

The tours last 20-45 minutes and cost $6. Senior and military tickets are $5, and children 10 and younger get in free. Tickets can be bought at Legend Jewelers.
