Adam Lambert Offers Refuge From ‘The Witch Hunt’ With Las Vegas Halloween Concert Series
By Larisha Paul
Larisha Paul
The Salem witch trials could have ended very differently if only the accused sorceresses had Adam Lambert to hide them away. Better late than never, the powerhouse singer is offering refuge during “The Witch Hunt,” a three-night limited concert series scheduled for Halloween weekend at the Encore Theater at Wynn Las Vegas.
“Halloween is my favorite time of the year and I am thrilled to celebrate it with a dark-sided trip into my repertoire,” Lambert shared in a statement. “Join our coven and seek shelter from The Witch Hunt!”
“The Witch Hunt” kicks off on Oct. 26 with additional shows on Oct. 28 and 29. General ticket sales begin on Friday, July 22 at 10 a.m. PDT via Ticketmaster . For an artist whose default setting is glammed-out camp, the slate of Halloween shows offers an opportunity for Lambert to lean even further into his usual theatrics.
The series marks Lambert’s latest solo stint as he wraps up the extensive Rhapsody world tour as the lead vocalist in Queen, set to conclude on July 25. He’s also been working on a forthcoming musical and its accompanying concept album, a sort of rock opera set in the Seventies.
“It’s about a real-life person who’s a bit obscure,” Lambert told Attitude . “Writing music for someone else’s story has been really interesting. It takes place in the 70s. I love that era. I’ll be putting out an album, linked to the musical. A concept album, where I’m performing it.”

Adam Lambert’s new brew is ‘The Witch Hunt’ at Encore Theater
Theatrical, sharp and imaginative, Lambert brings “The Witch Hunt” tour to Wynn Las Vegas.
Adam Lambert ascended from the cruise ships to “American Idol” to saving Queen.
That’s the short story. But the 40-year-old Lambert has loaded a lot of experiences into his two-decade career. He worked for Anita Mann Productions as a teenager on Holland America cruise line, where he first sang and danced at the same time in proper stage shows. He soared to the “American Idol” finals in 2009, finishing second to Kris Allen but impressing Queen founders Brian May and Roger Taylor so much during a performance of “We Are the Champions” that he was invited to tour with the legendary rock band.
Lambert brazenly took over as vocalist, performing the hits once sung by Freddie Mercury. May has said Queen was about ready to call it a career before meeting Lambert on “Idol.”
And in a solo career that took off just after “Idol,” Lambert has sold 3 million albums and 5 million singles. He’s toured solo and in the Queen + Adam Lambert lineup, including a 10-show run at Park MGM in September 2018.
All those experiences have shaped Lambert as a dazzling rock star, comfortable with Queen, as a soloist and certainly in his own skin. Theatrical, sharp and imaginative, Lambert brings “The Witch Hunt” tour to the Encore Theater on Oct. 26, 28 and 29 (showtimes are 8 p.m., tickets available at Ticketmaster.com).
Highlights from a recent Zoom chat:
Johnny Kats: We’re really interested in seeing what you’ll bring to “The Witch Hunt” shows.
Adam Lambert: I’m excited. Last year (at the Venetian Theatre) we did a Halloween-themed show, but it was a bit of an afterthought. This year, I really wanted to plan ahead. I think last year, coming out of the pandemic, it was a little moody and it was a little darker. This year, with “The Witch Hunt,” it’s a bit more lightweight, but it’s very fun. I’m definitely making my way through a handful of different genres and eras of music. But all within that Halloween vibe. Obviously there’s songs from my catalog, but I’m doing a lot of covers this year, more than I usually do, and singing some new material.
Who are you covering, aside from the obvious?
Oh, I don’t know if I want to give it away!
OK, how about a genre?
I’m definitely gonna hit you with some new wave from the ’80s. I’m definitely going to hit you with sort of a surprise ’90s metal moment. I’m going to get into some disco, and some ’70s funk, too.
This might be the show where the audience needs their own costume changes. I think I need to bring four or five outfits just to watch this show.
(Laughs) I plan on wearing enough costumes for everybody. So, you don’t even have to wear a costume. Just come in a T-shirt and jeans. I will do all the work.
I’ve always been impressed by your musical theater qualities, which make you more than a typical rock star. I think that’s why you’re so effective in the Queen shows. But where are you in your solo environment, in relation to Queen? Is that project on indefinite hold?
I’ve been really lucky. The last 10 years it’s always been side by side, and they’ve happened simultaneously. I’ve been able to go on tour with Queen, and then in the gaps between I’ve put out my own music. I haven’t really had to choose one as the primary, which has been pretty cool. We just toured this last summer, Queen and I, in Europe and in the U.K. We’re looking at maybe doing another one soon. I have a new song coming out — it’s a cover of an old Noël Coward song.
What’s the story behind the new single?
It’s called “Mad About the Boy”, and it’s for a movie about his life, a documentary (“Mad About the Boy — The Noël Coward Story,” due next year). They wanted an original song, and wanted a version of one of his songs that he could never sing because it was taboo for him to sing about a guy. It became a torch song for a lot of female vocalists. But being it’s 2022 and it’s a different time, we thought that it’d be cool to take it back and have a guy sing it. It’s a little jazz, a little trip-hop. It’s my own thing and I’m really into it.
I’m just now remembering that Coward recorded a live album at the Desert Inn, in the ’50s. That’s where Encore is today.
Well, that is interesting. I knew he had a thing in Vegas for a while. … That’d be a fun little fact for the audience.
I have to ask about your time with Anita Mann, who is the producer of “Fantasy” here at Luxor. She worked with you at the start of your career on the cruise ships, if I’m not mistaken .
I love her. She gave me my first job. We were doing revues, so it was like, a male and female vocalist, a secondary female and male vocalist, and then dancers. We were doing five different shows that were themed for the clientele on Holland America, a slightly older clientele. It was a lot of throwback stuff — Frank Sinatra, Tom Jones, stuff like that. It was really fun. We did Broadway songs. We did standards. It was a crash course of an education, too.
How old were you?
I was 19 years old, doing the male lead in the show with people who were twice my age. It was a little scary, but she believed in me.

Adam Lambert on his new musical, Halloween solo tour and singing with Queen: ‘I feel settled and comfortable’

Adam Lambert is coming full circle in three very different ways. Together, they tie his past, present and future together with a flair perfectly suited for this charismatic “American Idol” alum and lead singer in Queen.
Lambert is now at work on his first musical. It will follow a concept album, featuring songs from the musical, targeted for a late 2023 or early 2024 release.
In turn, the musical and album have been preceded by last Friday’s release of his version of “Mad About the Boy,” which is being used as the theme song for the 2023 film documentary “Mad About The Boy — The Noël Coward Story.”
“I’m very excited,” said Lambert, who brings his Halloween-themed “The Witch Hunt” concert tour to San Diego’s Balboa Theatre Oct. 23. He cites Coward — best known for writing such enduring theater classics as “Blithe Spirit” and “Private Lives” — as a longtime favorite.
“ ‘Mad About the Boy’ is an old standard, a sort of a torch song, that Noël wrote (in 1932) about a man but couldn’t sing because it was too taboo at the time,” Lambert noted during a phone interview last week from London.
“Multiple female vocalists have covered it. But for this bio-documentary, they wanted to remake the song and thought it would be cool to have a guy do it. I worked with (producers) Amanda Ghost and Johnny Coffer on my version.”

Coward died in 1973. His aesthetic sensibilities as a gay man and multifaceted artist resonate strongly with Lambert, who was just 9 when he made his 1991 stage debut at San Diego’s Lyceum Theater in a Metropolitan Educational Theater production of “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.”
Pandemic-fueled musical
Lambert, who grew up in Rancho Peñasquitos, spent the next decade here performing in such musicals as “Fiddler on the Roof” and “Grease” before moving to Los Angeles. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated his efforts on what will be his first musical.
“My album ‘Velvet’ was released two weeks before everything got shutdown and canceled,” Lambert said.
“Once I got over that, I wanted to be creative and do something. I had pitched this idea for a musical before the pandemic started, based on a real story about a real guy, and I started doing Zoom songwriting sessions for it during the pandemic.
“Some musicals have one composer and one lyricist. But because of my experience in the music world and the theater world, we’ve chosen to work with a group of composers, lyricists and producers, almost approaching it like a pop album.
“I’ve met a lot of great collaborators, and I’m in every session, guiding it. We’re trucking along, but it’s a slower process than putting together a pop album. I have the songs written and now we’re figuring out what the script might look like.”
Is the subject of Lambert’s musical still alive?
“It is a living person. And I apologize for not being able to give you the full pitch,” replied the singer, who has long cited the late David Bowie as a major inspiration.
“It’s a new type of project for me. It’s writing music about somebody else, how they felt and about what they were going through. Writing songs from that perspective is really cool. And I have some parallels in my life and can relate to that person.”
Lambert has to keep details about his debut musical close to his vest until it is officially announced. But he disclosed one key detail that strongly suggests what his musical might sound like, stylistically speaking.
“It’s a period piece set and in the 1970s, which is my favorite decade,” he said.
“I love the music from the ‘70s. There’s something about all those genres from that decade, so much great music that was golden. You had all the classic and progressive rock, and funk and soul, and disco, which was amazing.”
His upcoming musical is a full-circle moment for Lambert, who was an unabashed theater kid growing up in San Diego before he turned pro.
At 22, he spent six months in Germany performing in a bilingual production of “Hair.” This was followed by his being an ensemble member in the first U.S. national tour of “Wicked.”
“Absolutely full circle,” he said. “And it’s one of the things I’m so excited about. Because I do kind of miss that world. And to be able to come back into it with your own creation feels like the best of both worlds. When I was in theater before, I was a performer doing other people’s works. To be able to do my own musical now is a dream come true.”
We will rock you!
Lambert, 40, spent a good chunk of this summer touring with Queen. He joined the legendary English rock band in 2012. That was three years after he first performed Queen’s 1977 hit, “We Are The Champions,” on “American Idol” with the band’s two key surviving co-founding members, guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor.
“They are both great, and it feels like a family at this point,” Lambert said of May, 75, and Taylor, 73.
“There’s a lot of paternal energy with them — and a lot of humor. I really enjoy being a part of them and reveling in how they get to be forever young when they are on stage. I love being able to be part of that experience in a band that is so legendary and honoring (deceased Queen singer) Freddie (Mercury) every night.
“I’ve learned a lot from Brian and Roger, just from example. They conduct themselves in a real classy way and have a ton of experience being on the road. They enjoy themselves. We dine together and laugh together. It’s amazing.”
Lambert is in a unique position with his dual careers. As the lead singer in Queen, he performs in stadiums and arenas. As a solo artist, he performs in intimate theaters.
“I’m very fortunate getting to do both,” he agreed. “The fact I’ve been able to do them, side by side, over the past 10 years is incredible. It’s worked out very well, and it’s really well-balanced between the two. I want to keep doing both as long as possible.”
The colorful stage outfits Lambert wears for his performances with Queen have become one of his trademarks. This sartorial flair can be traced back to Lambert’s days as a child actor in musicals in San Diego.
“Early on as a kid, I enjoyed playing dress-up. A lot of kids do, and it just stuck with me,” he said. “Then I discovered theater, which was basically dressing up all the time, and it sort of snowballed into my passion.”
The Halloween theme of Lambert’s current “The Witch Hunt” tour harks back to Lambert’s youth in San Diego. He fondly recalls getting decked out to go trick-or-treating, with help from his mother, Leila.
“My mom showed me a picture of me as a dragon when I was 5,” he recalled. “She painted my face with fire coming out of my mouth. and I had a cape. Then I was a vampire. I have a history of dressing up like a vampire. As I got more into stage makeup as I got older, I got more excited. That’s when my imagination started firing.”
“I celebrate Halloween when I’m on tour and even when I’m not on tour,” he replied. “I love the holiday, and it’s exciting to put together a (concert tour) especially for Halloween.”
Shock-rock pioneer Alice Cooper has stated that each of his concerts, year-round, qualifies as a Halloween show.
Lambert chuckled appreciatively.
“I don’t allow the time of year to dictate how crazy I dress,” he said. “On Queen tours, I’m always trying to outdo my last look. Things are sparkling and fringe is flying! It’s fun. I look for opportunities to express myself — and I like to express myself!”
Lambert grew more introspective when he was asked to reflect on his artistic evolution between the release of his 2015 album, “The Original High,” and now.
“I think that, then, I wanted to prove I have earned a spot in the music industry,” he said. “Credibility was very important to me, and it still is. But I feel like I’ve done that now and I want to have fun!
“I had fun before that, too. But now, more than ever, I realize exactly who I am, personally and professionally. I know what I can do that others can’t — and what I should be trying to do. It’s nice to take the guesswork out. I feel settled and comfortable in my skin. And having and sharing that newfound discovery with an audience feels really good.”

Why Adam Lambert's Witch Hunt Is the Perfect Halloween Party for Music Fans
As part of e’s backstage pass, american idol ’s adam lambert delivered a spooky tease into his new halloween tour coming to the west coast this month..
Congratulations! You just scored a backstage pass to the hottest tickets in town.
After COVID-19 put a pause on live entertainment, your favorite artists are ready to hit the road and entertain audiences safely with brand-new tours and experiences. And regardless of where you are, we're offering an all-access ticket to every must-see concert of the year. Welcome to E!'s Backstage Pass.
Forget about pumpkin patches and haunted houses. Halloween 's must-see attraction may just be Adam Lambert 's new tour.
In celebration of the spooky October holiday, the former American Idol contestant is kicking off a series of concerts appropriately titled The Witch Hunt .
"There's a theme running through the shows," Adam exclusively told E! News before opening night on Oct. 19. "What I've done is I've gone through my catalogue and picked out the songs that fit this Halloween theme…I also picked out some amazing songs that I've loved over the years that also fit into this vibe and I think people are gonna really love coming to the show."
In addition to performing more covers than ever before, Adam said he's encouraging ticketholders to show up in costume or dressed to impress at the very least. After all, fashion is one of Adam's favorite elements about putting on a show.
"I feel like what you wear and how you put yourself together puts you in a mood," he said. "It puts you in character. It communicates something that matches the music. I'm still in the process of figuring out exactly what I'm going to wear, but I'm definitely pulling out all the stops."
And while Adam is used to performing at massive venues especially when on tour with Queen , the 40-year-old is looking forward to performing in more intimate venues where everyone can see him up close and personal.
"These things are important," he said. "Intimate shows are also more fun in some ways. You can see the people. You feel like you can connect with them easier and quicker."

This October, Adam Lambert is celebrating Halloween by launching The Witch Hunt tour. "When I was a kid, I remember just loving the permission to dress up for Halloween," the singer told E! News. "I find that when you're around people in the Halloween spirit at parties and such, people lower their inhibitions when they're in a costume. It makes for a really good time."
While fashion may take center stage at Adam's shows, his hair and makeup isn't far behind. "I love doing it," he said. "When I'm backstage, I try to take my time. It's kind of meditative as I listen to music. I could probably do it in a quicker version in about 30 to 35 minutes if I had to, but I don't like doing it that quick."
So how does Adam come up with some of his fabulous looks? Look no further than TikTok or Instagram. "There are tons of makeup artists making tutorials and because I think everyone's on social media and putting their face everywhere, people want to decorate their faces—women and men," he said. "We get creative. We want to express ourselves. We want to enhance the way we look. We want to tell a story with the way we look."
As part of The Witch Hunt tour, Adam will perform three shows at The Wynn Las Vegas. It's a special city for the singer who calls it an adult playground. "It's not a regular city. It's an entertainment city," he said. "I think when people come to Vegas, they're pumped. They're ready to enjoy themselves. They're ready to let loose and party and be a bit freer maybe than they are in their everyday lives."
When looking back on his journey from a 2009 American Idol contestant to a headline performer, Adam can't help but feel grateful. "I thought albums were just pipe dreams and I just kept being surprised by the opportunities that have come up and I've really enjoyed it," he said. "It is a lot of work. There are ups and downs to the business side of it, but ultimately, the joy of creating and performing are what keeps me going and I'm thrilled that I get to keep doing that."
At the end of every show, Adam hopes he has ticketgoers singing along and feeling a little freer. "One of the things I really love about performing for my fan base is that there's a unity in the audience that happens," he said. "There's something beautiful where people are friendly with each other and make new friends and there's a bonding experience that happens in the audience."

Adam Lambert – Witch Hunt Tour From Sacramento!
Words by William K
Images by Kevin Graft – #KGROKFOTO
Adam brought his Witch Hunt Tour to the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Wheatland on October 20 th , 2022. This was the second show of the tour. It was packed with cover songs and a choice selection of his own songs. The set was exceptionally heavy with hard rock songs by Queen, Metallica and Nine Inch Nails.
My third time seeing Adam perform solo was almost as excillerating as seeing him front Queen in 2017. Adam is now totally comfortable commanding the stage and owning every note that explodes from his incredible pipes. He entered the stage wearing a massive squared shoulder outfit with cape. He strutted around a bit with his back up dancers Terrence and Johnny and was quite liberal with sticking his tongue out at the crowd while working every inch of the stage. The song Fever was my faverite performance of the night. His band was exceptional but my biggest gripe is that his guitar player needs a wardrobe coach…..but his riffs were magnificent.
His version of Closer by NIN was sexy as fuck and when he came out to sing Metallica’s Enter Sandman he was wearing a red outfit with a kilt and football pads with giant spikes protruding from them and horns on his head.
Considering he is so far along with his career, the production aspect to his show was rather sparse. Minimal flashy lighting with no personalized backdrop or video wall and only a couple of outfit changes. By now I would think he’d be approaching the level of say P!nk of Mylie Cyrus but I guess I’m overestimating the influence he’s had in the pop world of music. His voice and talent is every bit as great as his arena selling out peers. I’m hoping this is warm up run for an arena run next year.
The sound at the Hard Rock is exceptional and I look forward to covering the upcoming diverse line up of concerts they have planned in the coming year in this intimate venue.
