Drive Time Calculator

How to use drive time calculator, estimated time of arrival, travel time to home, meet the creator of the drive time calculator.

The drive time calculator – also known as the travel time calculator, is our innovative tool created exclusively for drivers. It helps you find out the estimated time of arrival (ETA) at your car trip destination and determine the fuel costs of the journey.

So, if you are planning a vacation trip with friends in a seaside resort or would like to estimate the travel time to home by car, check out our drive time calculator!

Our drive time calculator covers every aspect of your trip: it calculates the total time needed to complete your journey, predicts your arrival time at the destination, and determines the overall cost of the drive, including the cost per person.

To accurately determine your arrival time and the total driving duration, follow these steps:

Before entering any values, choose your preferred units of measurement , where applicable. For instance, you can opt for imperial or metric units when specifying distances. This selection will determine how the calculator interprets your inputs.

Enter the total distance of your trip.

Specify your average driving speed during the trip.

Enter the total duration of breaks you plan to take during the journey.

Specify the departure time , day, month, and year.

Upon entering these details, the tool will calculate the total driving duration and exact arrival time based on your input.

If you're interested in determining the costs associated with your trip , use the second section of the calculator and follow these steps:

Specify your car's fuel consumption rate .

Indicate current fuel price .

Input the number of passengers traveling with you.

The calculator will subsequently determine the total drive cost and the cost per person based on the provided information.

For example , consider a scenario where you must drive 140 km (87 mi) at an average speed of 80 km/h (50 mph). You plan to take a 30-minute break, and your departure time is January 22, 2024, at 7:00 pm. In this case, the calculator would compute a total drive time of 2 hours and 15 minutes, estimating your arrival at the destination on January 22, 2024, at 9:15 pm.

Moreover, if your fuel consumption rate is 8 liters per 100 kilometers (62 miles) and the fuel price is $0.90 per liter, the total cost of your journey would be $10.08. If you're traveling with a companion, you could split the cost, resulting in $5.04 per person.

🙋‍♂️ If you need to be at a specific destination by a particular time and are wondering when to depart, our calculator has you covered — it works in reverse, too! Here's how to use it:

Input when you intend to arrive at your destination in the variable arrival time .

Enter the total distance you need to cover.

Specify the average driving speed you plan to maintain.

If you plan to take breaks during the journey, enter the total duration.

The calculator will determine the optimal departure time , ensuring you reach your destination as planned!

Have more questions about the estimated time of arrival? Keep reading.

Estimated time of arrival (ETA) is the time when a vehicle, ship, aircraft, or cargo is expected to arrive at a particular place.

For example, a particular cruise bus may have an ETA calculated based on the expected average speed on a particular road. The travel distance is simply divided by the speed to roughly estimate the arrival time. This method does not consider any unexpected events (such as car accidents on the road or bad weather conditions) that may occur on the way to the driver's destination.

Visit our speed calculator to learn more about how to calculate speed.

Let's assume we are driving home with friends from a winter vacation in the mountains.

The distance to our home city is 850 km .

We are driving with an average speed of 110 km/h .

We will make three short 15-minute breaks and 1-hour long dinner break, which gives:

Total time of breaks = 3 × 15 min + 1h = 1h 45min

We will start the trip on the 21 February 2018 at 10:00 am.

Now, the most interesting question – when will we be at home? Let's calculate the total drive time:

Total drive time = (distance/average drive speed) + total breaks time = 9h 28min

Arrival time: 21 February 2018 at 07:28 pm

Now, we want to know how much this journey will cost us. With our drive time calculator, the answer to this question is very simple!

  • Let's assume that our SUV car takes 9.5 liters of fuel per 100 km.
  • The gasoline price is €1.22 per liter.
  • We are traveling as a group of 4 friends -> Number of passengers = 4

The answer to the question is below:

Total drive cost = (distance/100) × car fuel consumption × fuel price = €98.52

Drive cost per person = total drive cost/number of passengers = €24.63

Super! Now, we know all we need – the exact travel time to home with an estimated arrival time and how much each passenger needs to pay for that journey. Let's start the engine! 🙂

We also have a great tool called traffic density calculator that helps you analyze the traffic on any road.

Check out the gas calculator , too, if you need to estimate the fuel cost for a drive.

I'm Filip, the mastermind behind the drive time calculator, and I'm a biomedical and electrical engineering graduate from AGH University of Krakow.

My motivation to develop this tool emerged during a road trip, where the challenges of planning a long journey, including costs and time uncertainties, became evident. In response, I envisioned a solution — a tool that calculates travel duration and considers essential factors like fuel costs. The outcome is a user-friendly tool designed to simplify journey planning , whether for extended trips or daily commutes.

How do I calculate the average speed for my trip?

To calculate your average speed for your trip, you must note the trip distance and drive time or travel time and follow these steps:

  • Subtract the total time used for breaks from the drive time.
  • Divide the trip distance by the difference obtained in step 1.
  • The value calculated is the average speed for the trip.
  • Verify your result with our drive time calculator.

How fast can I reach Boston from New York driving at 60 mph?

It'll take 3 hrs 35 mins without any breaks. Allowing for a 15 min break, it'll take you 3 hrs 50 min. Here's how you can calculate this answer:

If you take the I-90 W, Boston is 215 miles from New York.

Divide this distance by the average speed to get drive time without breaks:

215/60 = 3.5833 = 3 hrs 35 min .

Add a 15 min break to drive time for a convenient and safe drive to get a total drive time of 3 hrs 50 mins .

Verify with our drive time calculator.

How do I calculate mileage of my vehicle?

To calculate the mileage of your vehicle, follow these steps:

  • When refueling, note the initial odometer reading and the amount of fuel you're filling.
  • When you stop for fuel again, note the final odometer reading .
  • Subtract the initial odometer reading from the final reading and divide the difference by the amount of fuel used.

How far can you drive in one day?

Assuming you drive for 8 hours in a day at 60 mph, with 15 min breaks every 2 hours and an hour-long lunch break in between, you can drive 390 miles . To calculate this answer, follow these steps:

Calculate total break time :

15 min + 60 min + 15 min = 1 hr 30 min .

Subtract this from 8 hours to get 8 - 1:30 = 6 hr 30 min .

Multiply this time with 60 mph average speed to get the distance traveled:

60 × 6.5 = 390 miles .

Verify this result with our drive time calculator.

What Time Did Jesus Die? Unraveling the Hour Jesus Was Crucified

What Time Did Jesus Die? Unraveling the Hour Jesus Was Crucified

The Hour of the Crucifixion

While all of the Gospel accounts record the events surrounding Jesus’ sacrifice in slightly varying detail, only two reference the “hour” of the crucifixion: Mark 15:25 and John 19:14 . What time He was crucified may not seem that important to the casual reader of the gospel narratives. Still, to opponents of the inerrancy of the Bible, it can quickly become the crux of that particular argument. Thus, it is incumbent upon us that we become familiar with the passages and the associative evidence, for we must “…be prepared in season and out of season, to correct, rebuke and encourage…” ( 2 Timothy 4:2 ). In this article, I will present two plausible answers to this problem.

Roman Timekeeping of Today

Also of note is that two different types of timekeeping were practiced in Palestine 2000 years ago. The Hebrew method, which, of course, was practiced by the Jewish peoples, and the method utilized by the Romans. The Jewish method of keeping track of the daylight hours began at dawn and ran to sundown. At sundown, with the appearance of the first two stars, the night hours began, and this was the start of a new day.

Jewish Timekeeping in the Bible

We find evidence of how first-century Jews divided time as we study the Gospels. In Matthew 20:1-16 Jesus told the parable of the vinedressers. In that account, we are provided with general reference points/divisions of time: Early morning = 6 AM, third hour = 9 AM, sixth hour = noon, ninth hour = 3 PM, and the twelfth hour = 6 PM (the eleventh hour is mentioned in this parable). Also, in Mark 13:35 , Jesus spoke of His second coming. There we find the divisions of time in the night: Early evening = 6 PM (1 st watch), late evening = 9 PM (2 nd watch) (this division, though not specifically referred to, can be inferred), midnight = 12 AM (3 rd watch), rooster crowing = 3 AM (4 th watch), morning = 6 AM. We must remember that these time divisions could vary by as much as an hour and a half either way. Remember, these are generalities, not specific points in time. One person relaying the time of day may round up to the nearest division, and another may round down.

What Time Did Jesus Die?

As we already learned, the two passages in question regarding the time of the Crucifixion are Mark 15:25 : “Now it was the third hour, and they crucified Him.” And John 19:14 , “Now it was the Preparation Day of the Passover , and about the sixth hour…” Mark was undoubtedly using the Jewish method, and we can deduce that in Mark’s record, “…the third hour… would have been generally 9 AM, but, as previously pointed out, the exact time could vary greatly, and it could have been as early as 7:30 AM or as late as 10:30 AM.

When we look at John’s account, recognizing that he is using Roman time, we find that the “…the sixth hour…” would be a time reference to 6 AM, which, using the same “flexible time” logic as applied to Mark’s record, the time could be anywhere between 4:30 AM and 7:30 AM. However, the earlier time is not feasible because it is still considered night until sunrise. Considering these variables, the two-time accounts line up nicely at 7:30 AM. In addition, Mark 15:1 adds a little more supporting evidence when he states, “Immediately, in the morning…they bound Jesus…and delivered Him to Pilate.” The words, “Immediately in the morning…” indicate that the Jewish religious elite were prompt in taking Jesus to Pilate as soon as the sun was up.

While this answers the supposed contradiction, an additional response is just as plausible. When we read John’s account, we read, “Now it was the Preparation Day of the Passover, and about the sixth hour…” ( John 19:14 ) John is not referring to the time Jesus was crucified, but when Pilate brought Him out to the crowd, and in Roman time, the 6 th hr. would be 6 AM. It should also be noted that this immediately follows the scourging by the soldiers. From Jesus’ trial before Pilate, which we know was called “The Pavement,” to Golgotha, it is estimated to have been between a half to three-quarters of a mile. He was forced to carry His cross, at least part of the way. Whether its construction was in the traditional form or believed to have been utilized at that time (stipe and patibulum), the cross could have weighed up to 165 pounds in the former and 80 pounds in the latter (patibulum-crossbeam). At some point in His arduous journey, Joseph of Arimathea was called to assist Him.

I will reiterate what I said at the beginning, that we must be prepared to defend any supposed contradictions and be able to provide a defense for what it is we believe. Many people walk through this life not knowing Christ or are actively resistant to Him, but a believer's patient, love-infused explanations can help steer those many toward Him.

Possessive ’s with time expressions – Two hours’ walk

The use of the possessive ’s with time expressions.

We don’t normally use the possessive ‘s with inanimate things. In those cases, we generally use of instead. For example, we say:

  • the end of the street (NOT the street’s end )
  • the first page of the document  (NOT the document’s first page )

However, the possessive ’s is often used in time expressions to talk about the duration of something. For example:

  • You need two years’ experience to get a job.
  • He lives one hour’s drive from the airport.
  • The three hours’ journey to the valley was amazing.

Note that the apostrophe is sometimes not included, but this is usually not considered correct.

When do we need to use the possessive ’s with time expressions?

If you are not sure whether you should use the possessive ’s with a time expression, you can try replacing it with the word of . If the expression still makes sense, it means that you should use the ’ (apostrophe) or ’s .

For example, we say:

  • two years ’ experience (=an experience of two years)
  • one hour ’ s drive (=a drive of one hour)
  • three hours ’ journey (=a journey of three hours)

But we say:

  • It’s two months old. (The expression two months of old does not make sense.)
  • She is nine months pregnant. (The expression nine months of pregnant d oes not make sense.)

The possessive ’s with singular and plural time expressions

The form of the possessive ’s with time expressions is the same as with other nouns.

  • Add ’s after singular nouns: one year ’s notice, an hour ’ s walk, etc.
  • Add only ’ (apostrophe) after plural nouns ending in -s : three years ’ notice, two hours ’ walk, etc.

A two-day journey = two days’ journey

We also often use number + time expression before nouns to talk about how long something lasts.  In this case, the number and the time expression are joined by a hyphen and the time word is singular.

  • a four-hour journey = four hours’ journey
  • a thirty-minute delay = thirty minutes’ delay
  • a two-hour drive = two hours’ drive

Note that this type of number + noun compound adjective is also used to talk about other kinds of measurements.

  • a one-hundred-dollar bill
  • a five-litre bottle
  • a twenty-foot container

I sailed in a deluxe cabin on a ferry from Santorini to Athens for $171. The floating hotel room and its perks helped the 8-hour journey fly by.

  • I booked a deluxe cabin on an eight-hour ferry from Santorini to Athens.
  • My upgraded cabin made it feel like I was traveling in a floating hotel room .
  • I'd upgrade on this journey again, and I wouldn't even mind booking a cabin for a longer ride.

Insider Today

I recently went on a short trip to Santorini from my home in Athens and decided to take a ferry both ways.

On my way to Santorini, I booked an economy ticket on Blue Star Ferries for 45 euros, or about $50. But I upgraded to a 157-euro deluxe cabin for the ride back.

Here's what my luxurious eight-hour trip was like.

I arrived at the port in Santorini 45 minutes before my departure.

three hour journey

My ticket stated that I should arrive at the port an hour before departure, but a few locals advised me it wasn't necessary.

I decided to chance it by arriving 45 minutes early and spent most of that time scrolling on my phone, so I probably could've come even later.

There were a few cafés and restaurants at the port, but not much else. Because the port was so small, I could keep an eye on my boat as it came in from its previous destination.

There were no boarding benefits for having an upgraded ticket.

three hour journey

All passengers were kept in a busy boarding lobby, and everyone boarded at the same time. There were no deluxe lounges or first-to-board priorities as you might find at an airport.

I found the boarding process a bit chaotic, with everyone almost fighting to be at the front of the queue.

But I was pleased that having a cabin meant I could take all my luggage with me. On my economy ferry, I had to leave my bags at boarding and pick them up when I disembarked.

It was easy to find my cabin.

three hour journey

Once on board, I easily found a reception desk and walked right up to ask the employee for my room key.

She issued the key card and gave me instructions on how to find my cabin.

The deluxe cabin was very spacious.

three hour journey

There are 192 cabins on Blue Star 1, but only two deluxe cabins with forward-facing windows.

I was impressed by the size of the room and the furnishings. It was akin to a midsize hotel room .

Two (slightly firm) single beds were pushed together in the middle of the room, topped with duvets and soft pillows . Around the bed was a sofa, a dining table and chairs, a desk, a mirror, and two bedside tables with lamps.

The cabin also had a small but effective bathroom with a shower that had nice water pressure.

My cabin came with lots of benefits.

three hour journey

My deluxe cabin included three (European) plug points, two sets of slippers, and a tray of dishes and utensils.

I received a kit, similar to bags I've gotten on airplanes, with a toothbrush and toothpaste, shaving supplies , a shower cap, two sewing kits, a nail file, cotton pads and cotton buds, and a small hairband.

A shower-gel dispenser was fixed to the bathroom wall, but there wasn't any shampoo or conditioner.

Wi-Fi was available for purchase, and the room had a television with 10 Greek-language channels. But during my sail, only six of them were coming through.

I was glad I’d planned my dinner ahead of time.

three hour journey

Since the journey was nearly eight hours long, I brought my own dinner on board and stored it in the cabin's mini fridge — which also came stocked with complimentary fruit and soft drinks.

When I got hungry, I plated everything up, sat at the small table, and enjoyed my meal while listening to music on my phone.

There were also two cafés and a fast-food restaurant on the deck below my cabin if I didn't bring food.

I left my cabin to catch the sunset.

three hour journey

Watching the sun set behind the Greek Island of Naxos was beautiful.

I'd already left my cabin a few times to stretch my legs on the outdoor decks and take in the sea views. But after dark, I spent most of my time in the cabin.

My trip passed by quickly.

three hour journey

Considering I spent almost eight hours in a fairly confined space, I thought the journey would feel longer.

But I read, worked, ate dinner, and slept for about 45 minutes — the time passed quickly.

As we approached Athens, I was getting tired and could've happily spent eight more hours getting some sleep in the cabin's bed.

Port arrival announcements were made in the hallways outside the cabins, but if you're sleeping, I think they could be easy to miss. Thankfully, about 30 minutes before reaching Athens , a staff member knocked on my door to inform me.

Disembarkation in Athens at night was easy, but finding a ride was not.

three hour journey

I was guided alongside the rest of the foot passengers to leave through the same door as the cars, trucks, and bikes on the boat.

We docked at a remote port, away from public transportation , but I found a free bus that brought me closer to the main port gates.

App-based taxis wouldn't come into the port, and the ones already inside only took cash. I didn't have any, so I had to walk down some dark, empty streets to call a cab.

But other than planning my transportation in advance next time, I'd definitely book a deluxe cabin again. The ride was smooth, easy, and enjoyable — I could easily do a longer journey in what was essentially a floating hotel room.

How Much Does a 3 Hour Uber Cost? A Comprehensive Guide

By Happy Sharer

three hour journey

Introduction

Taking an Uber can be a convenient way to get around town, but it’s important to know how much you’ll end up paying for your ride. If you’re planning on taking an Uber for a 3-hour journey, you may be wondering how much it will cost. In this article, we’ll explore all the factors that influence the price of an Uber ride, estimate the cost of a 3-hour Uber journey, and compare prices in different cities.

Calculating the Cost of a 3-Hour Uber Trip

When calculating the cost of a 3-hour Uber trip, there are several factors to consider. The most important factor is the base fare, which is the initial fee charged by Uber for each ride. This fee varies depending on the type of Uber service you select, as well as the city you’re riding in. Other factors that influence the price of an Uber ride include the length and distance of the trip, the time of day, and any surge pricing that may be in effect.

Estimating the Cost of a 3-Hour Uber Trip

To estimate the cost of a 3-hour Uber trip, you need to first determine the base fare for the type of Uber service you plan to use. For example, if you’re taking a standard UberX ride, the base fare in most cities is $1.50. Then, you need to calculate the per-minute and per-mile fees based on the length and distance of your trip. Most cities charge $0.10 per minute and $0.75 per mile for UberX rides. Finally, you need to factor in any surge pricing that may be in effect at the time of your ride. Surge pricing can add an additional 1.5x to 2.5x to your total fare.

How Much Does it Cost to Take an Uber for 3 Hours?

Now that you’ve calculated the base fare and estimated the per-minute and per-mile fees, you can begin to get an idea of how much a 3-hour Uber ride will cost. To make it easier to understand, let’s break down the cost of a 3-hour UberX ride into three categories: short trips, medium trips, and long trips.

Analyzing the Price Points for a 3-Hour Uber Ride

For short trips (under 10 miles), you can expect to pay anywhere from $20 to $25 for a 3-hour Uber ride. For medium trips (10-30 miles), the cost is typically between $30 and $45. And for long trips (over 30 miles), the cost is usually around $60 to $90. Of course, these prices can vary depending on the type of Uber service you choose and the amount of surge pricing in effect.

The Average Cost of a 3-Hour Uber Journey

Based on the above estimates, the average cost of a 3-hour Uber ride is around $45. However, this price can increase significantly if you’re taking a longer trip or if surge pricing is in effect.

Comparing Prices for a 3 Hour Uber Ride in Different Cities

The cost of a 3-hour Uber ride can vary significantly depending on the city you’re riding in. To get an idea of how much you’ll pay for a 3-hour Uber ride in different cities, let’s compare the prices in four major U.S. cities: New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Washington, D.C.

Comparing Uber Rates Across U.S. Cities

In New York City, you can expect to pay around $60 for a 3-hour Uber ride. In Los Angeles, the cost is typically between $45 and $55. In Chicago, the cost is usually around $35 to $45. And in Washington, D.C., the cost is typically between $40 and $50.

Finding the Cheapest Uber Rates in Your City

To find the cheapest Uber rates in your city, you can use the Uber Fare Estimator tool. Simply enter your starting point and destination, and the tool will give you an estimate of the total fare for your trip. You can also check the Uber app for any promotions or discounts that may be available in your area.

In conclusion, the cost of a 3-hour Uber ride can vary significantly depending on the type of Uber service you choose, the length and distance of your trip, the time of day, and any surge pricing that may be in effect. On average, you can expect to pay around $45 for a 3-hour Uber ride. Prices can vary significantly across different cities, so be sure to use the Uber Fare Estimator tool to find the cheapest rates in your area.

Summary of Findings

Three hour journey to train

The Chicago Barça Academy has its won Xavi Hernández, however, in this case it is not the Barça coach but an 11 year old player who goes to the extremes to become the best player he can thanks to the training methods at the Barça Academy.

Xavi and his family have to travel three hours for him to be able to train a the Barça Academy Chicago. Due to the long journey, they have had to request special permission from his school for him to leave early to be able to make it to the city in time for the sessions. His presence at training and the sacrifices he and his family are willing to make so Xavi can develop as a player are a show of their commitment.

Six hour round trip to train

The lengths the young player has to go shows his commitment to the Barça model and that of his parents who make the sacrifice so he can develop in the Barça style.

Passionate and dedicated, Xavi is a clear example of the passion that football arouses and its ability to overcome all obstacles, like a three hour journey, which becomes simply a route to sporting excellence.

I´ve been very confused with this problem, whenever I want to state the duration of a trip or something related, I always struggle with what structure I should use, let´s say I went on a brief trip to a certain place, and I want to share how long it took, "it was a two hours´ trip" or "it was a two-hour trip" or even two hour´s trip

Journey, trip or travel: what’s the difference?

three hour journey

journey / trip / travel

  • Did you have a good journey ?
  • Hai fatto un buon viaggio?
  • The journey back was terrible.
  • Il viaggio di ritorno è stato terribile.
  • It was the start of a long journey .
  • Fu l’inizio di un lungo viaggio.
  • Fortunately the journey didn’t take us very long .
  • Per fortuna il viaggio non ci ha impiegato molto tempo.
  • The return journey is much quicker.
  • Il viaggio di ritorno è molto più veloce.
  • It’s a three hour journey to London from here.
  • È un viaggio di tre ore per Londra da qui.
  • The outward journey was more enjoyable.
  • Il viaggio di andata è stato più gradevole.
  • My journey from England to Sicily by train was fascinating.
  • Il mio viaggio dall’Inghilterra alla Sicilia è stato affascinante.
  • It’s a two hundred kilometre journey to the next big town.
  • È un viaggio di duecento kilometri alla prossima grande città.
  • Have a safe journey !
  • Fai un viaggio tranquillo.

► Esempio di journey come verbo: (da sostituire con travel nella lingua parlata)

  • They journeyed across the desert until they came to the sea.

  • We had a lovely trip to Brighton yesterday.
  • Abbiamo fatto una bella gita a Brighton ieri.
  • Our trip to New York was a total disaster.
  • Il nostro viaggio a New York è stato un totale disatro.
  • You can do a day trip to Cambridge from here.
  • Puoi fare una gita di un giorno a Cambridge da qui.
  • I’m afraid Tom’s on a business trip at the moment.
  • Mi dispiace ma Tom è in un viagggio di lavoro al momento.
  • They went for a three day trip around the islands.
  • Hanno fatto un viaggio di tre giorni attorno alle isole.
  • What was your trip to Amsterdam like ?
  • Com’è stato il tuo viaggio ad Amsterdam?
  • Bob’s Sunday fishing trips were legendary.
  • Le battute di pesca domenicali di Bob erano leggendarie.
  • The students are going on a field trip to Stonehenge.
  • Gli studenti faranno una gita didattica a Stonehenge.
  • Why don’t you take a trip on the river this afternoon?
  • Perché non fate una gita sul fiume oggi pomeriggio?
  • Have a good trip .
  • Fate un buon viaggio.

Travel , invece, è usato quasi esclusivamente come verbo e solo occasionalmente come sostantivo. L’errore più comune è quello di usare travel come sostantivo invece di journey oppure trip . Esistono, però, numerosi sostantivi composti basati sulla parola travel che vedremo in seguito. Prima vediamo degli esempi tipici del verbo travel in uso:

  • How do you travel to work?
  • Come vai al lavoro?
  • Bob travels to Spain about three times a year.
  • Bob va in Spagna circa tre volte all’anno.
  • We’ re travelling by plane to London and then by train to Brighton.
  • Andremo a Londra con l’aereo e poi col treno a Brighton.
  • I’m only taking one bag. I prefer to travel light .
  • Porto una borsa sola. Preferisco viaggiare leggero.
  • Jane loves travelling in the summer.
  • Jane ama viaggiare in estate.
  • I’ ve only travelled first class once in my life.
  • Ho viaggiato in prima classe solo una volta nella mia vita.
  • Tom often travels abroad for work.
  • Tom viaggia spesso all’estero per lavoro.
  • Bob ‘s great-grandfather once travelled on the Orient Express.
  • Il bisnonno di Bob ha viaggiato una volta sull’Orient Express.
  • We can’t travel tomorrow. There’s a train strike.
  • Non possiamo viaggiare domani. C’è uno sciopero dei treni.
  • If you’re under 12 years old you can travel free .
  • Se hai meno di 12 anni puoi viaggiare gratis.

► Esempi di travel come sostantivo:

  • He wrote a book about his travels in Africa.
  • Egli ha scritto in libro dei suoi viaggi in Africa.
  • Air travel is much cheaper now than before.
  • Viaggiare in aereo è molto più economico adesso che prima.
  • Bob loves good food and travel
  • Bob ama il buon cibo e viaggiare.

► Sostantivi composti con travel :

  • Travel agency = agenzia di viaggi
  • Travel agent = agente di viaggi
  • Travel arrangements = piano di viaggio
  • Travel clock = orologio da viaggio
  • Travel companion = compagno di viaggio
  • Travel expenses = spese di viaggio
  • Travel guide = guida turistica (persona/libro)
  • Travel sickness = nausea causato dal mezzo di trasporto
  • Travel time = tempo di tragitto

N.B. Mentre journey e trip possono essere usati indiscriminatemente a volte, una differenza c’è, come illustra questo esempio:

  • The trip went very well, but the return journey was a disaster.
  • Il viaggio (completo) è andato molto bene, ma il viaggio (tragitto) di ritorno è stato un disastro.

Extreme Commuting: When The Journey To Work Takes Three Hours

anguskidman Avatar

It’s not unusual to spend an hour travelling to work and the same heading home. But what about the extreme commuters: the people who are prepared to spend three hours or more just to get to their jobs? Over January, I’ve been testing that out by journeying to the furthest extremes of the Sydney train network. Welcome to the land that timetables forgot.

[related title=”Extreme Commuting” tag=”extreme-commuting” items=”6″] The evidence suggests most Australians have a relatively brief journey to and from their jobs. The 2006 Time Use Survey conducted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) found that we spend 2.5 per cent of our total time on “work-related travel”, which amounts to a little over four hours a week. (The ABS repeated the study in 2013 but the results haven’t been published yet.)

The average figure doesn’t account for potentially big differences between capital cities and rural areas, but it definitely suggests that not many people are making train journeys that consume over three hours a day in each direction.

That might be rare, but it is possible on Sydney’s unusually extensive intercity train network. From Central Station, you can travel north 307 kilometres to Scone, west 230 kilometres to Bathurst, or south 153 kilometres to Bomaderry. It’s time-consuming and unforgiving; these are not (for the most part) trains that run very often. In some cases, there’s just one service a day in each direction.

On the upside, it isn’t expensive. A single ticket from Bomaderry to Scone covers 460 kilometres and costs just $8.60 (it will take you the better part of nine hours). There are potentially many reasons for avoiding train travel, but at that price the cost isn’t one of them.

Inspired by a BBC report on the extreme commuting phenomenon , my own love of trains and my enthusiasm for a ludicrous Lifehacker challenge, I decided during January that I would travel to all the remote, non-urban extremities of Sydney’s train network, to see how different this experience was from a standard city service. I’ve been travelling on those for 20 years, so I can claim a good degree of familiarity with the regular network.

I’ve circled the relevant destinations on the map below:

There were some constraints on the project:

  • I wanted to explore the rural outposts, not the ends of lines which fall clearly within the Sydney area. Hence no visits to Bondi Junction, Carlingford, Richmond or Cronulla.
  • Because I do have a regular job, I was mostly doing this on weekends, when the timetable is even more restricted than on weekdays. So for each journey, I’ll also assess whether it could be realistically carried about by someone working in a 9-5 job in Central Sydney. I’ll also examine the extent to which you might be able to rely on using wireless broadband to work while on the train.
  • I wanted to make the trips solely by regular commuter train (no using the substitute buses that also run to these destinations during the day, or cheating by purchasing an XPT country train ticket, which is also an option for several of these places). On top of that, I’m too cheap to pay for accommodation in any of these locations. Timetables are generally designed for people travelling from the far-flung reaches to Sydney, and not the other way around, so this required some awkward choices, including two occasions when I had to grab a midnight train from the city and then lurk awkwardly on a remote platform waiting for a connecting service at 3am.

These journeys have a few features in common. They all use diesel trains, since it isn’t economic to electrify the lines that far out. They often require changing from a major intercity service to a more specialised shuttle. And they all require a solid knowledge of your train timetable: none is so frequent you could simply rock up to your local station and wait.

Throughout this week at 1800, I’ll be describing my experience on each of these remote lines. We kick off tomorrow with a journey to a town more usually associated with another mode of transport: Scone, Australia’s horse capital. See you then!

What could possibly be the point. Would some one live at one end of the line work on the opposite end?

gehirn Avatar

Yes they do, that’s entirely the point because people travel for work and study.

ninjaman Avatar

Either that or because they were asked in an interview whether they would accept the job if it was in Dubbo and they said yes, despite living 3 hours away 😛

sockparty Avatar

they do, because they don’t have a choice. this is what happens when the only affordable housing is far from the city and all the jobs are in the city and you need both to not still be living with your parents. some people even choose to in order to have a best of both worlds scenario – living in a country area but accessing resources of the city

raincaots Avatar

Cool! I’m from Katoomba myself, not exactly the end of the line, but it’s 2 hours away from Central. And people do the trip because @pukoh there’s shit all in terms of jobs out this way. You have no choice but to make the trip.

ps. registered to comment here, spelt my username wrong 🙁 🙁

borganstein Avatar

Thats shit although the username looks very interesting regardless.

ithendra Avatar

I’ve often entertained the idea of doing this myself, so I’ll definitely be interested to see how you manage it.

Also, @pukoh, I’m one of these “extreme commuters” – come the end of February, three days a week I will have a three-hour round trip between Unanderra and Sydney so I can attend university. Not everyone has the luxury of studying or working close to home.

harrytuckerr Avatar

Bathurst local here. That train is horrible.

amofoz Avatar

This will be very interesting. I look forward to the articles.

I have heard of so many people travelling by train (or car or bus) weekly, or even sometimes daily, to get to their jobs or schooling. Choosing to live somewhere else, and make the commute. For many factors, like cheaper housing, better area to live, etc.

It would be interesting to see how some of the costs and times stack up, compared to fuel consumption and drive times. etc.

Kids and Teens do it too. I lived in a small country farming town which had nearly nothing, and so many went to boarding schools 2-3 hours away, and came home weekends. Otherwise it was an hour and a half (one-way, so 3 hours a day there and back, IF the bus didn’t break down) bus trip daily to the nearest day school and the commute was seriously irritating for me as a kid.

I also remember once such article written in the paper here where I now live, a few years back, and found it online – hope it is OK to link to it: http://www.coffscoastadvocate.com.au/news/apn-the-last-sydney-xpt-for/7981/

“After 21 years of travelling 609km by train to work, Adrienne Casey is commuting to Sydney for the last time this week.”

anguskidman Avatar

Great example! I note that no-one wants to commute from Coffs daily though 🙂

april Avatar

“It would be interesting to see how some of the costs and times stack up, compared to fuel consumption and drive times. etc.”

This is what I am hoping to find out, too. I live in the Sydney CBD and spend zero dollars (and less than five minutes round trip) commuting to and from work. I know I could save on rent if I moved out of the city, but I wonder how far I’d have to move, and how much I’d end up spending (money and time) on the commute.

Looking forward to the articles.

industriald Avatar

I guess it would be like the episode of Seinfeld where they contemplate the idea of collecting cans or bottles and driving interstate to cash them in. You need to take the cans in bulk to make the trip worth it, but the fuel costs and cost of larger vehicles outweigh the bulk aspect.

When you think about it, if you drive say an hour compared to 3 hours on a train, it’s one unproductive hour vs three hours work you could be doing,

lol no, that is one long trip – it’s a job in itself!

I do it once a year to visit relatives, and it’s bad enough! haha

frenchy182 Avatar

As a Dungog local, I bid you a safe trip. The hunter line has some less than savoury commuters. Also, as some who regularly does the trip from Dungog to Central, I may just run into you.

gregorvorbarra Avatar

Years ago I was commuting from Colyton, which isn’t actually all that far out (near St Marys/Mt Druitt), through to the University of Sydney.

Then one day they held an exam at 8am. There were no buses sufficiently early to let me catch a suitable service. I left home at around 5am to walk to the station (45 minutes), then catch a train which landed me at Redfern station at 7:30am, in time to walk to the theatre where the exam was being held.

I was soooo ticked off at the on-campus college students that day. The same exam was scheduled for 1pm as well, but which exam you sat was pre-scheduled…

When you get out past Government bus territory, bus timetables are much more of an issue than train timetables. I was stunned to discover shortly thereafter that Government buses ran through the night…

geofflamb Avatar

3 hours is not worth it. Your kids will be asleep when you leave and when you get home from work. You will not see your partner.

shithead Avatar

I would never be able to do this. My current journey is only 30-40mins by car. I remember some of my High School teachers had to commute from Wollongong to Western Sydney around 1.5-2hrs each way.

whitepointer Avatar

@anguskidman – You need to make the distinction between travelling to work for 3 hours, and travelling 3 hours per day. The heading and first paragraph suggest the 3 hour trip is one way, but then in the third paragraph you say “three hours a day”, implying it’s both directions combined.

There is a big difference between the two. I live in Penrith for example and my commute is an hour and a half in one direction, which includes travelling to and from the station at both ends (actual train ride is 50 minutes if you get an express service), so do that twice a day and it’s three hours.

Have edited to make it clearer (note also that at the extreme ends of the network as listed we’re definitely in that territory).

dknigs Avatar

No way I could do this. A family life, hobby and fitness killer all rolled up into 4-6 hours a day of commuting.

it helps to not have any hobbies and if all your fitness is walking to the station :p

There are a bunch of commuters in Bendigo who travel 2 hours to Melbourne.

When your done and want to compare with the other side of the spectrum, send me an email. We decided years ago to throw away all that and live where we work. Then got married and had kids. Now our kids are 3 and 1 and we both live and work together running a guesthouse. We are both with our kids all the time, no commute time, no commute cost, and a closer family unit. Wins all round!

scottyoz Avatar

The line from Port Kembla is electrified, and is only 14 minutes from Wollongong. There are a huge amount of daily commuters from Wollongong (and from as far south as Unanderra and Dapto) to Sydney, so whilst irritating, I wouldn’t call it extreme commuting.

Bomaderry on the other hand is a different story. The electrified trains stop at Kiama, where it changes to diesel through to the end of the line. You’ll be welcomed by a lovely smell and absolutely nothing to do while you wait for the return train home.

Make sure you take the Wollongong train during daylight hours, sit on the top deck and on the eastern side; the view from Waterfall to Austinmer is spectacular. Also, try and get the express train. The all stations train is torture.

Hello Angus, just wanted to say thank you for doing this article project. I’ve been attempting to google exactly this topic for the last few weeks.

It’s because I would one day like to own my own home, but I’m single, on a low income. I have been priced way out of Sydney, yet I love my job in the city , and am not willing to change that. So my only option in the future is going to involve an extreme commute it seems.

So what I would love to read about, is how people add extra value to their travel times. So one does not feel 6 hours of their day has been wasted.

I already have a 1.5-2 hour trip to work, one of the things I’ve done is invest in 3DS, iPad, and a low budget gaming laptop. And thankfully I love reading too.

interestingmix Avatar

Hi FoxSyd. I travel approx 2hours each way every day for the exact reasons you have mentioned (Housing prices, love the job in the city). Thankfully getting on at the end of the line for me means a seat in the morning which I honestly use to get a little extra sleep on many days.

Coming home though, space is at a premium with everyone trying to leave the city, so I have found audiobooks, stored on my phone (some educational) to be a good use of time seeing as standing and actually holding anything (whether that’s a book or tablet) to be difficult/hazardous. After a seat is available it’s often the tablet/Laptop with some videos.

Welcome to my world. The only home we could afford was beyond the end of a train line in Victoria. In my industry, work is ALWAYS going to be in the CBD. For me it’s a 15min walk to the bus stop, 30min bus ride to the station, then 1:15 minutes on the train, followed by a 10min walk to our office (annoyingly right in the middle of all the train stations in Melbourne, always at least a 10 min walk no matter the station). Then the reverse going home again (and god help me if I don’t catch a train that will line me up with a bus coming home.). Driving to the station is only sometimes possible as the car parks fill up extremely early in the morning, plus the added cost becomes hard to manage.

This is a total of at least 4h to 4h20 at day, a total of around 22h per week just getting to and from work. For a lot of us this is just how it is.

I have been doing the Cardiff – Central run twice daily for 4 years now. 3 hours one way.

Why? IT roles in Newcastle are hard to come by.

I sleep in the morning and engage in reading/music/games/non-work programming in the afternoon/evening.

Does have a huge impact on quality family time. Would give it up tomorrow if I could find a job that pays my mortgage in Newcastle.

Angus, I’m curious – I had assumed that Lifehacker covered your ‘crazy challenge budget’ but you mentioned you were too cheap to pay for accommodation. Does that mean you were $175 out of pocket after that McDonald’s challenge?!

I suspect that Angus funds all of his challenges

repomonkey Avatar

I live not far from Bomaderry (next stop back up the line) and I work in Sydney. The south coast line is notoriously awful – beautiful and scenic in parts, but so mind-bogglingly slow that nobody in their right mind would ever use the line from Bomo to Sydney on anything other than a very rare occasion when no other alternative mode of transport was available. I commute to Sydney from here in my brand new and very frugal VW Golf. It takes me 1hour and 40mins to get too and from work – if I did it by train it would be closer to four hours each way (and that’s being generous). I’m lucky in that my office is south of the CBD near the airport, but I have friends who work north of the harbour and who drive to Helensburgh (a very pleasant one hour drive from here) and catch the (much speedier) train in the rest of the way.

Years ago I got a job in West Heidelberg, not extreme but I caught a train and bus for an hour and 40 minutes. To drive would take an hour and 30 minutes so no advantage to drive. Then there was a restructure and I worked in Moonee Ponds before transferring to Frankston, a 20 minute journey.

2024 NFL draft: Texans send 5 coaches and GM to Texas' Pro Day

The Houston Texans were well represented at the University of Texas Pro Day on Wednesday.

Six members of the team — including general manager Nick Caserio and head coach DeMeco Ryans — made the three-hour journey from Houston to Austin to watch some of the Longhorns' top players work out ahead of the 2024 NFL draft in April. Offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik, defensive coordinator Matt Burke, newly promoted defensive line coach Rod Wright (who's also an alum of Texas) and wide receivers coach Ben McDaniels were also in attendance.

Texas boasts a long list of potential fits for the Texans, including wide receiver and defensive line.

First, let's start with the wideouts: Xavier Worthy — who broke the NFL combine 40-yard dash record —and Adonai Mitchell. Worthy is more of the take-the-top-off burner wide receiver, while Mitchell is often compared to the pass-catchers like Cincinnati Bengals receiver Tee Higgins. Worthy's speed is a very interesting aspect of his game, while Mitchell feels like the more natural fit for the Texans given his versatility to play in the slot and on the boundary.

The need for a slot wide receiver is obvious for the Texans, but neither Worthy nor Mitchell could be on the board when Houston picks in the second round after Caserio traded away the No. 23 overall pick to move back to No. 42.

Another area of concern is interior defensive line. Texas has two quality prospects at that position, too: Byron Murphy II and T'vondre Sweat. This duo amassed seven sacks in 2023 and have quickly grabbed the attention of football fans after whose team lacks the talent in their defensive front.

While each player offers a very different skill set, there is no doubt the Texans could benefit from their services after the departure of three of the four starting defensive line members from the 2023 season.

Murphy on paper feels like the more natural fit for the Texans defense, as Ryans tends to keep his front within a certain set of parameters when it comes to physical make up. Murphy is 6-foot-1 and 297 pounds — a similar build to what the other defensive tackles look like on the Texans.

https://Twitter.com/TexansCap/status/1770536983007257071?s=20

Murphy could be gone before the Texans make a selection, though. Sweat, meanwhile, could be a very real possibility in the second round. Caserio appeared to watch Sweat's workout intently, and defensive line coach Rod Wright, who played defensive tackle for the Longhorns, spoke with Sweat after his workout.

https://twitter.com/cory_mose/status/1770577835264016675?s=46&t=NOIf5zPeztXN2bLf9LyX9w

Sending this type of contingent of staff to a Pro Day doesn't necessarily mean anything, especially given the short travel time to Austin. However, Texas has a lot of good players at positions of need for Houston.

The trip was warranted, but where the Texans go in the draft is anyone's guess at this point.

Ryan Reynolds looks on nervously at the match from the stands at Wrexham FC

Hollywood connection: Wrexham lines up three-hour direct rail service to London

Train maker Alstom plans fast service skirting Birmingham as Ryan Reynolds’ football club takeover reaps in ever more benefits

Direct trains could next year connect Wrexham to London, with a new service capitalising on the town’s Hollywood-meets-football mini-boom .

The train manufacturer Alstom is bidding to set up the Wrexham , Shropshire and Midlands Railway with a promise of cheaper, more comfortable trains straight to London.

The three-hour journey to Euston station may not persuade Wrexham AFC co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney to ditch the private jets, but the operators hope to make the greener alternative to and from the Welsh borders ever more attractive.

Dodging a wait in Birmingham will be a selling point for passengers, with trains skirting around the Midlands city on a little-used freight route, opening up new connections from Shropshire to Warwickshire.

An application to run five trains a day from May 2025 has been submitted to the rail regulator, the ORR. The service would be run on an “open-access” basis outside the major train operating contracts set by the Department for Transport .

The rail minister, Huw Merriman, described the plans as “exciting proposals”, adding: “Competition delivers choice for passengers and drives up standards, which is why we continue to work with industry to help make the most of open-access rail.”

A similar open-access plan was approved last week by the ORR for Grand Union Trains to start a new train service between London and Stirling in Scotland from June 2025. The same firm is scheduled to start running a direct train to Carmarthen, in south Wales, from the end of this year.

The proposed Wrexham services would also provide direct trains to London from stations including Gobowen, near Oswestry, and Walsall, as well as Shrewsbury and Telford in Shropshire, whose single daily direct service run by Avanti is scheduled to be scrapped.

Peter Broadley, Alstom’s UK services managing director, said: “There’s a real momentum about Wrexham obviously with the Hollywood connection with the football club. But with all open access you need to find opportunities to serve communities which aren’t currently [served] by rail.

“Wrexham, Shrewsbury and that part of the West Midlands are really underserved by rail services. And the current focus on Wrexham is a nice boost to what we’re trying to do.”

A popular but short-lived direct Wrexham-London service ran from 2008 to 2011, offering more comfortable seating and interiors, but collapsed within three years after running up large losses.

after newsletter promotion

Alstom believes using the west coast mainline to Euston, rather than the Marylebone terminus its predecessor used, will give it an edge, Broadley said. “It’s primarily about journey time – that was quite a lot slower than what we’re offering. And we are going by quite different routes that will pick up customers which they weren’t accessing.”

While the operators may be coming in on Ryan Reynolds’ celebrity coattails in Wrexham, they are keen to emphasise the other rail links that the service will forge, from places such as Shrewsbury to Nuneaton.

That said, even with no documentary series to chart this journey, the official launch on Thursday remains in Wrexham: “We had to start somewhere,” Broadley said.

Palm Sunday commemorates the Christian belief in the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, when he was greeted by cheering crowds waving palm branches that they set out on the ground along his path, according to the Bible.

This year, Palm Sunday falls on March 24. Also known as Passion Sunday, it marks the start of Holy Week. The most sacred week of the Christian year includes the Good Friday re-enactment of Jesus’ crucifixion story and death, and their belief in his resurrection on Easter.

Here is a quick look at Palm Sunday’s significance.

IS THERE A DONKEY IN THIS STORY?

The procession of Jesus into Jerusalem is described by the four Gospel writers in the Bible.

The Gospels differ, but based on one expert they agree on this: Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey — or a colt. So, which one is it?

Colt is defined as “a young male horse that is usually not castrated.” But in the Bible, the word meaning “colt” is used almost exclusively for young donkeys, not horses, writes Joanne M. Pierce , professor emerita of religious studies at the College of the Holy Cross.

Pierce writes that this brings to mind a reference from the Book of Zechariah in Jewish scriptures, where the prophet describes a victorious king who enters Jerusalem riding on a donkey.

(AP Photo/John Amis)

In Judaism, she says, the passage from Zechariah refers to the Messiah , a spiritual king who would peacefully redeem Israel, and the donkey is interpreted as a sign of humility .

“In Christianity, this animal becomes almost a symbol of Christ himself, given how it patiently suffers and bears others’ burdens,” Pierce writes in a piece published by The Conversation . “Horses, on the other hand, tend to be associated with royalty, power and war.”

WHAT ABOUT THE PALMS?

In the biblical Palm Sunday story, a cheering crowd greeted Jesus along the road. Some spread their garments on the ground; others threw down leafy branches they had cut from the fields. In the Gospel of John, they are branches from palms, a tree that symbolized victory and triumph.

In the Gospel of Matthew, people began to shout: “Hosanna to the son of David! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven!” The word “Hosanna” was a plea for salvation and an exclamation of adoration.

After the procession, the Bible says Jesus entered Jerusalem and went into the temple.

HOW IS PALM SUNDAY CELEBRATED?

The ritual or liturgy typically starts with a blessing of the palms by clergy. It’s followed by a reading of the Passion of Christ, meaning an account of the final events of Jesus’ life.

Some ceremonies in German-speaking countries used to include a figure of Jesus riding a donkey, Encyclopedia Britannica says . The figure is called a “ Palmesel ,” or German for “palm donkey,” according to New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, which on its site recounts how worshippers would lay palms on the ground before the Palmesel during lively processions.

Christian pilgrims in the Holy Land mark Palm Sunday by holding Masses and processions retracing Jesus’ triumphal entry. Worshippers carry palm fronds and olive branches and march from the top of the neighboring Mount of Olives to Jerusalem’s historic Old City, home to holy sites of the three Abrahamic monotheistic faiths.

In churches around the world, the palms are often taken home by congregants, and some will become ashes.

HOW DO THE PALMS TURN INTO ASHES?

Ashes can be purchased, but some churches make their own by burning the palms from prior years.

They’re used to make the ashes for Ash Wednesday , the solemn day of fasting and reflection that signals the start of Christianity’s most penitent season.

The Osaka comeback journey continues with statement win against Svitolina

MIAMI -- Two hours before the match, Naomi Osaka was walking in the tunnel under Hard Rock Stadium, headphones clamped on her head. Her eyes weren’t focused on anything in particular -- she looked dialed in.

Later Saturday night after the rain swept through, Osaka emerged with a 6-2, 7-6 (5) victory over the No.15-seeded Elina Svitolina at the Miami Open that should strike some legitimate fear into her Hologic WTA Tour colleagues.

“I definitely do think it was one of my best matches, if not the best match,” Osaka said afterward. “But I also want myself to play better and better every match. I feel like for me going into the match, I knew that she’s a great player, and I had no choice but to play really well if I wanted a chance to win.”

In her past four matches, Osaka has beaten two Top 20 players -- No. 15 Liudmila Samsonova (in Indian Wells) and now No.17 Svitolina. In only her sixth match back, Osaka’s moving better than she was a month ago, is significantly more consistent from the baseline -- and her original timetable of challenging for the US Open title no longer seems overly ambitious.

The upside (and downside) of Coco Gauff playing on familiar turf

Pegula overcomes slow start to reach the third round of the miami open, in her 100th wta 1000 match, swiatek triumphs over giorgi in miami.

Osaka now leads the series with Svitolina 4-3. She plays No.23 seed Caroline Garcia -- a 6-1, 5-2 retirement winner over Viktoriya Tomova -- in a third-round match Monday.

Before they met, the match was moved from the Grandstand Court to the more intimate Butch Buchholz Court.

“I honestly think the court was really cool, just like having everyone surrounding and everyone was so loud and vocal,” Osaka said. “It just felt like Miami.”

Coming in, these two had a history of performing well in the Sunshine Double. They’re among the 10 players who have won a combined 25 matches or more at Miami and Indian Wells, now deadlocked at 26. In 2018, Svitolina defeated Osaka here in a second-round match. In her last appearance here, Osaka won five matches before losing to Swiatek.

This was a classic matchup of power versus defense. Svitolina scrambled to stay even but was broken in the sixth game. Osaka opened up the court with a forceful forehand to the corner, then pummeled a backhand crosscourt winner to take a 4-2 lead. She closed out the set with a second break, when Svitolina’s rushed forehand soared long.

'What clever play!': Osaka's baseline-volley winner stuns the crowd in Miami

Osaka broke Svitolina at love in the sixth game of the second set, but Svitolina returned the favor, breaking her for the first time to make it 4-5. Osaka showed some nerves toward the end, but given her lack of match play, that’s normal. In the tiebreak, one last unreachable forehand gave Osaka the win.

On Tuesday, Osaka met with reporters to discuss her progress.

“My biggest goal moving forward …. woo!” Osaka said, pondering. “Obviously, I want to win tournaments, but I know I have to take it one step at a time. Just winning matches. The more matches I win, the more comfortable I’ll be … and hopefully that will lead to holding something above my head one day.”

We 🫶 these moms! @naomiosaka books her spot into the next round after defeating Svitolina 6-2, 7-6(5). An EPIC performance from both players! #MiamiOpen pic.twitter.com/NTuNrdAtGV — wta (@WTA) March 23, 2024

Before the tournament, she watched videos of her former self, from 2019-21, including some from Miami.

“I really don’t feel like I’m far off this season.”

As Svitolina will tell you.

On the same July day that People Magazine revealed Osaka had become a mother in Los Angeles, some 5,500 miles away Svitolina offered a glimpse into what a successful maternity comeback might look like.

As mothers, they have traced similar curves in their comebacks. Osaka was gone for 15 months, Svitolina for 12. Osaka was unranked on her return, while Svitolina was No.1,081. Svitolina is up to No.17, and Osaka has progressed to No.229. They are also linked by the names of their children. Svitolina, now 29, and ATP Tour star Gael Monfils welcomed Skai into the world back in October of 2022. Osaka, 26, and rapper Cordae named their daughter Shai.

Svitolina, who had returned to the tour earlier last year in Charleston after giving birth, stunned World No.1 Iga Swiatek to reach the semifinals at Wimbledon. It was only her seventh tournament back and built on a surprising title at Strasbourg and a quarterfinal run at Roland Garros.

Osaka came back at the start of 2024. Expectations for her were heightened, of course, by the fact she is a four-time Grand Slam champion. Osaka was a middling 5-5 coming into the Miami Open but had shown flashes of the form that carried her to the No.1 ranking. She reached the quarterfinals in Doha, falling to Karolina Pliskova, and won two of three matches at Indian Wells, losing to Elise Mertens. And now, Osaka has won all four sets she has played in Miami.

Eight months after giving birth, Osaka is following Svitolina’s lead in a resounding return to the tour.

Nicole eggert sympathizes with kate middleton's public cancer journey, nicole eggert sympathy for kate's cancer journey ... oncologist weighs in too, exclusive 264 3/22/2024 5:25 pm pt.

Nicole Eggert -- who's battling cancer herself -- says she can sympathize with what Kate Middleton is now going through herself ... telling us there's a lot to juggle on this journey.

We talked to the actress Friday and she weighed in on Kate's announcement -- where she revealed she'd been diagnosed with cancer and was receiving preventative chemotherapy. Nicole, who has breast cancer, tells us there's a lot she can relate to with her own diagnosis.

For starters, NE says there's a lot of pressure having to weather this storm for public figures -- and perhaps even doubly so for someone like Kate ... who's a senior Royal.

Nicole says the public should lend her some grace during this time and not scrutinize as much as they have been ... because Kate will undoubtedly go through some changes in the near future, some of which she might not want to share with everyone despite the curiosity.

There's another element to this as well, and that includes how to deal with parenting her three young children as she and William navigate these choppy waters ... something Nicole tells us will be no easy task.

Take a listen to how she describes this -- NE says Kate not only has to process her diagnosis and manage how her body feels throughout this ... but she'll have her children to worry about as well, which is why a solid foundation at home and help will go a long way.

We also spoke with Dr. Lawrence Piro -- an oncologist from Los Angeles -- and he told us what Kate could come to expect as she continues on with her chemotherapy ... especially in terms of side effects, etc. Dr. Piro also made clear to us ... stress of any kind is not helpful.

With all that said, hopefully Kate can properly recover now and focus on what she needs to without all the gossip and speculation. At this point, it's obvious she's going through it.

Here's to a speedy recovery.
