Salvation Army helps Boston 25 celebrate 20 years of ‘Zip Trips’

By Hugo Bravo

For the last 20 summers, Boston 25 News has hosted ‘Zip Trips’, live broadcasts from local communities in Massachusetts. These events showcase the diversity of Massachusetts by meeting residents, local businesses, and covering local events and happenings.

These engaging events fit in line perfectly with The Salvation Army’s mission. At Boston 25’s Zip Trip event in Whitman, MA, the Army was on hand to continue their working relationship with the news channel. A table was set up for snacks, beverages, and information on Salvation Army  back to school events, summer camp, canteens, and programs for veterans.

“Boston 25 is a wonderful partner for us,” says Major Scott Kelly, officer at the Salvation Army in MA. “Their anchors have participated in our events, such as emceeing our annual luncheon. Being a part of Zip Trips across the state this summer is a way for us to support Boston 25 and introduce people to what the Army does.”

“I met a woman who remembered that her own mother received help from the Army years ago. In turn, that woman volunteers for us now. It’s very encouraging to know that we’ve had that effect on people, and the influence continues to this day,” says Major Scott.

The Army’s table also had a sign-up sheet for anyone who wanted to become a volunteer during the upcoming kettle season.

“An event like this is especially important to our Service Extension unit, since it doesn’t operate from an official church or building,” says Timothy Veglas, Service Extension field rep. “The connections we make through Boston 25 Zip Trips are very helpful for us, because we are meeting people where they are and providing help and hope to our neighbors in need.”

Employees and volunteers of Sponsor and Sponsor’s wholly or partially owned subsidiaries, and each of their respective parents, subsidiaries, divisions, promotional partners, agencies, affiliates, advertising, and promotion agencies, and the immediate family members of their employees or those residing in the same household are not eligible. “Immediate family members” means a spouse, domestic partner, child, grandchild, parent, grandparent, or sibling (including adoptive, in-law, and step-relationships). By participating, Entrants (defined below) agree to these Official Rules and to the decisions of the Sponsor, which are final and binding in all respects. Void where prohibited by law, rule, or regulation. All federal, state, and local laws and regulations apply.

How to Enter : During the Sweepstakes Period, eligible individuals may participate in the Sweepstakes (and become “Entrants”). Complete our sweepstakes electronic entry form by August 19, 2022, 10:00 AM ET to be entered into the Sweepstakes. Limit of one (1) entry into the Sweepstakes (“Entry”) per household. Sponsor has the sole discretion to determine whether an Entry is eligible. Random Drawing : One (1) potential winner(s) will be selected from all eligible Entries via a random drawing held on Monday, August 22, 2022. The random drawing will be conducted by the Sponsor. Odds of winning a prize depend upon the total number of eligible Entries received.

FY 2024 per diem highlights

We establish the per diem rates for the continental United States (CONUS), which includes the 48 contiguous states and the District of Columbia. Federal agencies use the per diem rates to reimburse their employees for subsistence expenses incurred while on official travel.

Federal per diem rates consist of a maximum lodging allowance component and a meals and incidental expenses (M&IE) component. Most of CONUS (approximately 2,600 counties) is covered by the standard rate of $166 ($107 lodging, $59 M&IE). In fiscal year (FY) 2024, there are 302 non-standard areas (NSAs) that have per diem rates higher than the standard rate.

Since FY 2005, we have based the maximum lodging allowances on average daily rate (ADR) data. ADR is a widely accepted lodging industry measure derived from a property's room rental revenue divided by the number of rooms rented. This calculation provides us with the average rate in an area. For more information about how lodging per diem rates are determined, visit Factors Influencing Lodging Rates .

We remind agencies that the Federal Travel Regulation (FTR) allows for actual expense reimbursement when per diem rates are insufficient to meet necessary expenses. Please see FTR § § 301-11.300 through 11.306 for more information.

FY 2024 results

The standard CONUS lodging rate will increase from $98 to $107. All current NSAs will have lodging rates at or above FY 2023 rates. The M&IE per diem tiers for FY 2024 are unchanged at $59-$79, with the standard M&IE rate unchanged at $59.

There are two new NSA locations this year:

  • Huntsville, AL (Madison County)
  • Charles Town, WV (Jefferson County)

The following locations that were NSAs (or part of an established NSA) in FY 2023 will move into the standard CONUS rate category:

  • Hammond / Munster / Merrillville, IN (Lake County)
  • Wichita, KS (Sedgwick County)
  • Baton Rouge, LA (East Baton Rouge Parish)
  • Baltimore County, MD
  • Frederick, MD (Frederick County)
  • East Lansing / Lansing, MI (Ingham and Eaton Counties)
  • Kalamazoo / Battle Creek, MI (Kalamazoo and Calhoun Counties)
  • Eagan/ Burnsville / Mendota Heights, MN (Dakota County)
  • Akron, OH (Summit County)
  • Wooster, OH (Wayne County)
  • Erie, PA (Erie County)
  • Corpus Christi, TX (Nueces County)
  • Round Rock, TX (Williamson County)
  • Appleton, WI (Outagamie County)
  • Brookfield / Racine, WI (Waukesha and Racine Counties)
  • Morgantown, WV (Monongalia County)

Rates for Alaska, Hawaii, U.S. Territories and Possessions are set by the Department of Defense .

Rates for foreign countries are set by the State Department .

2 Choose a date

Rates are available between 10/1/2021 and 09/30/2024.

The End Date of your trip can not occur before the Start Date.

Traveler reimbursement is based on the location of the work activities and not the accommodations, unless lodging is not available at the work activity, then the agency may authorize the rate where lodging is obtained.

Unless otherwise specified, the per diem locality is defined as "all locations within, or entirely surrounded by, the corporate limits of the key city, including independent entities located within those boundaries."

Per diem localities with county definitions shall include "all locations within, or entirely surrounded by, the corporate limits of the key city as well as the boundaries of the listed counties, including independent entities located within the boundaries of the key city and the listed counties (unless otherwise listed separately)."

When a military installation or Government - related facility(whether or not specifically named) is located partially within more than one city or county boundary, the applicable per diem rate for the entire installation or facility is the higher of the rates which apply to the cities and / or counties, even though part(s) of such activities may be located outside the defined per diem locality.

Powerful nor’easter creates a mess on Saturday

SATURDAY NOR’EASTER

A strong nor’easter will pummel New England during the day Saturday. We begin with light snow and icy conditions across much of western & central Mass along with southern New Hampshire. This will continue in central and northern MA throughout the late morning. That’s where a WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY is in effect, and calls for a couple inches of snow and up to 1/10″ ice. By the afternoon, temperatures will be into the 40s and heavy rain will melt away any early snow & ice.

The worst of the storm will peak in the late afternoon and evening with frequent downpours occurring. At this point, we’ll be nearing a couple inches of rain, which will cause minor flooding in roadways, brooks, and steams. A FLOOD WATCH is in effect for a widespread 2-3″ rainfall, locally up to 4″. Rain will end from west to east in the late evening with a very brief snowfall to conclude the storm.

SUNDAY IMPROVEMENTS

Sunday is shaping up dry, chilly, windy, and partly cloudy. Gusts 30-50 mph will be strongest along the coast, Cape and Islands especially. Wind chills will remain below freezing all day and may not break the mid 20s in areas farthest north & west. Clouds will stay thick across eastern MA, but central MA should have some partial sun. In fact, western MA my be pretty bright.

We’ll continue to see drier weather slowly return as we begin the upcoming work week.
