Brooklyn Latin School, The
Our Insights
What’s special.
Classical education with Latin instruction
The Downside
May intimidate teens who fear public speaking
Brooklyn Latin is an unapologetically work-hard kind of place, where every child takes four years of Latin and laboratory science and writes a lengthy research paper. Public speaking and debate are fostered, and students lead their own parent-teacher conferences. Top universities recruit Brooklyn Latin students, some of whom are the first in their families to attend college.
Students are called “discipuli,” Latin for “student.” They wear white shirts and khaki trousers or skirts, and boys wear neckties, giving the school an English-boarding-school aesthetic.
Founded in 2006, Brooklyn Latin is modeled after Boston Latin, the nation’s oldest public high school. The Brooklyn school is one of New York City’s nine specialized high schools and the only one to offer an International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma, a rigorous degree widely accepted at universities in more than 100 countries. More demanding than a standard Regents prep curriculum, the IB program requires students to write a 15- to 20-page research essay on a topic of their choice, make an oral presentation and pass various subject exams.
Public speaking is an important part of the school's culture. Students participate in Socratic seminars, in which they communicate according to formal rules of discussion. In declamations, students must memorize a poem or speech to present to peers. Students stand and deliver, through tears and memory gaps, but improve over time, according to an administrator. The public speaking we saw on our visit was impressive—a recitation from Antigone by a visibly nervous sophomore, and a passionate debate in a senior seminar on the inequities of education.
The school prides itself on its strong math and science program. In an atypical sequence, freshmen begin with a conceptual physics class, followed by chemistry and two years of IB biology. Juniors and seniors may elect to take IB chemistry or IB physics as well. These students spend about half their day immersed in college-level science work, says Gina Mautschke-Mitchell, a former math teacher who became headmaster in 2013. Bridge design, solar cell efficiency and seed germination are some former student-designed lab topics culminating in eight- to 10-page papers.
Juniors and seniors also take English, history, math and theory of knowledge (a philosophy class unique to IB) and may choose to study intensive Spanish, visual arts or world religions as electives. Some subjects, like math, biology and Latin, are split into higher and lower levels of difficulty. (Note: The school does not offer advanced placement classes; IB classes are considered even more demanding.)
To help with the steep learning curve freshman year, students receive support in advisory groups. Those who need more assistance are encouraged to meet with teachers during office hours like in college. There are four guidance counselors, according to the budget summary.
Freshmen travel to the Princeton-Blairstown Center, affiliated with Princeton University, for an outdoor bonding adventure in the fall. In the spring they visit Boston Latin and area colleges. The Spanish department organizes home stays in Spanish-speaking countries; some seniors travel to Italy.
Brooklyn Latin shares a building with Lyons Community School and t he Williamsburg High School of Arts and Technology (formerly the Green School). Administrators say students have had no complaints about safety; nevertheless, students are advised to walk to and from the G or L train in groups, and an administrator is outside during arrival and dismissal times, which are staggered with the other schools. The schools share some sports and clubs, a full list of which can be found on the school website .
Roughly 40 percent of all students earn the IB Diploma, according to the school website. Students are encouraged to apply to colleges out of state as well as SUNY and CUNY schools. College acceptances include Smith, Vassar, Amherst, Brown, Cornell and Emory.
SPECIAL EDUCATION: The few children with special needs are incorporated into general classes. A special education tutor provides assistance in a variety of ways, such as helping a student color code his work to stay organized or offering a safe space for a student to practice a memorized speech until she feels comfortable in front of a group. Thanks to the generous support of the Heckscher Foundation for Children, we have partnered with EdTrust–NY to bring you this important data about advanced course access at each high school.
All New York City students should have equitable access to key gatekeeper and advanced courses that lead to college and career preparedness. Yet across the city, students who are Black, Latinx, and American Indian, and students from low-income backgrounds, are less likely than their peers to attend schools where advanced courses are offered. And even when they do attend schools that offer these courses, they are less likely to be given access.
Exploring this data will help you understand which key advanced courses are offered at each high school, and whether students across different racial groups and income levels have equitable access to those advanced courses. Please see the “learn more” link above the data for important notes about how the data are calculated and displayed.
Thanks to the generous support of the Heckscher Foundation for Children, we have partnered with EdTrust–NY to bring you this important data about how well each high school is preparing students to enroll in and persist through college.
Every student deserves a high school education that prepares them for college, careers, and active citizenship. For students who enroll in college, the best measure of college readiness is whether students ultimately succeed. Exploring this data will help you understand how prepared students from this high school were to persist through college/university and complete their postsecondary degrees or credentials.
Data notes: The data shows what percent of all students in Grades 9-12 were enrolled in each type of course during one school year. If every student took each course once over the course of 4 years, we would expect to see annual enrollment rates around 25%. If you see annual enrollment rates above 25%, that may mean students are taking more than one course in a given subject over the course of 4 years, for example, Regents-level Physics and AP-level Physics.
If 0 students were enrolled in a course at this school, that course will display as “not offered” for that year. Students can take more than one course in each category, but enrollment rates are capped at 100%.
Comparisons under “By Income” are calculated by subtracting low-income rates from not-low-income rates; any difference larger than 3% is noted as less or more access. Comparisons under “By Race/Ethnicity'' are calculated by subtracting each group’s rate from the All students rate, then adding the absolute differences for a “racial balance” score not shown here. Schools are designated as “far more equal” or “more equal” if they fall in the more balanced quarter or half of schools, respectively, and “less equal” or “far less equal” if they fall in the least balanced half or quarter of schools, respectively.
How to read the radar graphs under By Race/Ethnicity: look at both the shape and size of the shaded area. If the shaded area is very small, then very few students from any racial/ethnic group have access to that type of course at this school. If the shaded area looks like a circle, then students from all racial/ethnic groups are taking that advanced course at about the same rate. If it has spikes or dips, then students from certain racial groups are taking the course at higher rates than students from other racial/ethnic groups.
Thanks to the generous support of the Heckscher Foundation for Children , we have partnered with EdTrust-NY to bring you this important data about how well each high school is preparing students to enroll in college.
This Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) completion data helps you understand how well this school is supporting students to access the financial resources and supports that make a critical difference in whether they are able to attend college.
National research shows that 90% of high school seniors who complete the FAFSA go to college immediately after graduation compared to just 55% of seniors who do not complete the FAFSA. High schools can make a significant difference in helping students who are low-income and first-generation college students complete the FAFSA.
Graduates of this school that are included here are those who enrolled in a public New York State college or university the following fall and participated in the Tuition Assistance Program (TAP), which provides financial aid to families generally earning up to $80,000 a year.
How to read the bar charts: Use the dropdown menu to select students who earned either an Associate’s or a Bachelor’s degree. The first two bars display all students from this high school who went on to persist in college, regardless of their intended degree. The following bars display the number of students who earned the degree type specified in the dropdown menu.

Brooklyn Latin
Online learning hub.
a one-stop resource for students and their families to navigate learning at The Brooklyn Latin School
Hispanic Heritage Month is a nationally recognized celebration of the histories, cultures, and contributions of Americans whose ancestors came from across the Spanish-speaking world. The federal government established Hispanic Heritage Week in 1968 in legislation sponsored by Representative Edward R. Roybal. Roybal grew up in Los Angeles in a Neomexicano family and went on to serve 30 years as a United States Congressman, eventually earning the Presidential Citizens Medal and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. The weeklong celebration he established was expanded to a full month in 1988 based on the efforts of Representative Estaban Torres, a Mexican American congressman from Los Angeles. Since then, Hispanic Heritage Month has been celebrated each year from September 15 to October 15. These dates are historically significant because they coincide with the anniversary of independence for many Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Mexico, and Chile.
There are nearly 60 millions people of Spanish or Latin American ancestry in the United States, approximately 19% of the total population. As we celebrate their heritage, it’s important to remember that the U.S. Hispanic population is itself incredibly diverse . It includes people whose ancestry spans over 20 distinct countries from across the diaspora of the Spanish-speaking world, which was created when Spain colonized indigenous peoples living in modern day Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. It includes people of different races, people who trace their ancestry in America back hundreds of years and people who immigrated more recently. Indeed, even the category of “Hispanic” is contested . While some view “Hispanic” as an invitation to pan-ethnic unity, others see it as an inauthentic label assigned by the Census bureau and prefer to self-identify as Latino/Latina/Latinx, by their nationality, or by none of those. This rich diversity of cultures, ideas, and people is a huge part of what we celebrate during this month.
To all those who identify as Hispanic or Latinx in our community, thank you for your contributions here at TBLS! We also gratefully acknowledge the ways in which the contributions of Hispanic and Latinx communities are woven throughout the fabric of our society. We hope the entire community will take this month to learn more about Hispanic and Latinx cultures and people, and we have attached some resources for you to use as a starting point. Celebrating and honoring cultures is part of the life-long learning that we engage in here at TBLS. If you have other suggestions for how we can celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month - and other cultures in our school community in the future - please contact the School Leadership Team or your Student Senate representatives to share your ideas.
