Where to buy a sim card for Italy

Phone stores.

Although the airport is the most convenient place to buy a sim card for Italy, prices for these tourist sim cards are also a tourist trap, especially at Milan Airport and  Venice Airport . Prices for Italy tourist sim cards at Rome Airport are much more reasonable. 

Every tourist destination in Italy has multiple mobile phone shops, just find them on Google Maps. Go to the store, bring your passport and get yourself a local prepaid sim card for Italy.

Another option is to buy your sim card for Italy online before your trip. This way you arrive prepared and as soon as the plane lands you are online. There are some amazing e-sim card deals for Italy that start from just $4.5 USD and you can arrange everything online within just a couple minutes. No more visiting a sim card store.

Registration process

When buying a sim card in Italy you will have to bring a valid photo ID or your passport. The sim card will be registered on your name and passport number. In the store they will take a copy of your passport or you can send them an email with a photo of your passport.

Most important when buying a sim card in Italy is that your phone needs to be unlocked. Foreign sim cards only work in unlocked phones! If you are not sure if your phone is unlocked then contact your provider in your home country. This also counts for international and e-sim cards. In general phones from Europe, Asia and Australia are unlocked. Phones from the Americas are mostly locked.

If you want to avoid the registration process for some reason then look into ordering an e-sim card for traveling to Italy on the internet. Traveltomtom recommends ordering an e-sim card for Italy via either SimOptions , Airalo or Nomad . You don't need an ID-verification to activate e-sim cards, only an email address.

Italy sim cards and EU roaming

Good news is that all the prepaid sim card in Italy allow FREE EU roaming. That means that if you buy a sim card in Rome and travel to Paris, Amsterdam, Barcelona onwards you can use your voice, text and data allowance at no extra costs. Basically there are no roaming costs within the EU. However, always check with your provider as most operators in Italy limit the EU data roaming allowance on prepaid sim cards for tourists.

Mobile internet operators Italy

There are 4 different mobile internet providers in Italy:

• Windtre (former Wind &3)

In 2020 Wind and 3 Italy joined forces and became WINDTRE. Iliad is a fairly new mobile internet operator in Italy. More providers, means more competition, means cheaper prices! Prices for data sim cards in Italy are heaven and tourist sim cards give you a lot of data for little money.

Prices prepaid sim card Italy in 2024

Now let's look at the most important thing for Italy sim cards: the prices of prepaid sim cards plans and data bundles. All the info below info is updated per April 2024. Check out the below prepaid sim card deals for tourists in Italy. Prices are in Euros. $1 USD = €0.92 EUR and €1 EUR = $1.09 USD.

Tim Italy prepaid sim card

Tim Italy offers a tourist prepaid sim card for Italy:

• 50 GB data only valid in Italy + 200 minutes worldwide = €14.99 EUR - ($16.5 USD)

The above sim card deal is exclusive €10 EUR ($11 USD) activation costs. Tim does NOT offer free EU data roaming and their prepaid sim cards are NOT 5G ready, that means the max data speed is just 4G. TIM offers e-sim cards in their official retail phone stores you can get an TIM tourist plan as an e-sim card.

This Tim Italy tourist prepaid sim card is valid for 30 days. For more info check the  TIM Italy website .

Windtre Italy

Windtre is a merge of Wind and 3, the mobile internet provider from the UK. Since 2020 they are operating under the new name: Windtre. They offer the following prepaid sim card deal for tourists in Italy:

• 20 GB data (13.7 GB EU roaming) + 100 minutes in Italy and 100 international minutes for 30 days = €14.99 EUR - ($16.5 USD)

What it doesn't say in the above offer is that the sim card registration costs €10 EUR ($11 USD) extra. The Windtre prepaid sim cards for tourists are 5G ready. Wind Tre does NOT offer e-sim cards for tourists on prepaid sim card plans. 

Great offer, that personally would be one of my preferred sim card deal for Italy in 2024. For more info check this  WindTre webiste .

Vodafone Italy 

Vodafone Italy offers only one prepaid sim card for tourists:

• 30 GB data (15 GB in EU) + Unlimited social media + 600 minutes in all Europe - valid for 30 days = €24.99 EUR - ($27.5 USD)

This Vodafone prepaid sim card is 5G ready and you can also get this tourist sim card as an e-sim card. For more info check the  Vodafone Italy website .

Iliad Italy

Iliad Italy is a relatively new company (2018) and they do not have that many stores around Italy. Buying an Iliad prepaid sim card cost €9.99 EUR ($11 USD for the registration fee and they offer the following prepaid sim card data deals:

• 100 GB data in Italy (8 GB EU roaming) + unlimited minutes/sms in Europe, USA, Canada and 70 other countries - valid for 1 month = €7.99 EUR - ($9 USD)
• 150 GB data in Italy (10 GB EU roaming) + unlimited minutes/sms in Europe, USA, Canada and 70 other countries - valid for 1 month = €9.99 EUR - ($11 USD)

Be aware that there is an EU data cap outside Italy. Therefore I would not recommend an Iliad prepaid sim card for traveling in Europe. For more info check the  Iliad website . Sucks that they limit the data usage in Europe, otherwise it would even be one of the best prepaid sim cards in Europe .

The iliad Giga 150 sim card deal offers 5G, the Giga 100 sim card deal only offers a max data speed of 4G. Iliad does NOT offer e-sim cards for tourists on prepaid plans as of April 2024.

Based on all the previous Italy prepaid sim card deals we have seen it is an easy comparison that iliad offers the best prepaid sim card deal in Italy in 2024. However, there is a little catch as iliad users have reported to have been charged consecutive months after their Italy holiday. Therefore when buying an iliad sim card in Italy, always make sure that you buy a prepaid sim card and there are NO recurring payments after one month. The best would be to pay in cash and not leave your credit card details with iliad.

Some things that seem to good to be true, sometimes are, so be careful and double check in the iliad store when buying a sim card for Italy!

Best 4G/5G network in Italy in 2024

Not only the prices for prepaid sim cards and data packages are important for determining the best sim card for Italy. Traveltomtom also compared the mobile internet coverage maps of Vodafone, Wind Tre, iliad and TIM in order to find out which mobile internet proivder has the best 4G/5G network in Italy.

Is there 5G in Italy?

Yes, there is 5G in Italy and as of 2024 it is pretty good and wide spread. Pretty much all the tourist destination have either a 4G/LTE signal or even a 5G signal availabel.

Although the above mobile data network coverage maps are updated for 2024 they are not 100% accurate. However, they are a great reference to compare the 4G/5G networks of the mobile internet providers in Italy in 2024.

It is a simple conclusion that TIM has the smallest 5G network in Italy. Most important for tourists is that all Italy tourist destinations have great network coverage. Even when traveling off the beaten path in Italy you will always find a phone signal regardless your network operator.

Planning a trip to Sardinia? Then you want to buy a Vodafone or Windtre Italy sim card as they have much better network coverage in Sardinia then iliad and Tim.

From the above comparison it leaves no doubt that Windtre has the best 4G/5G network in Italy in 2024.

Best sim card for Italy in 2024

The cheapest way to get connected when traveling to Italy is an e-sim card. On top of that an e-sim card is also the easiest way to stay connected as you arrange everything online within just a couple minutes. For already $4.5 USD you get 1 GB data for traveling in Italy. Especially for people that don't need much data on their phone when traveling to Italy an e-sim card is the best and cheapest option to stay connected in Italy.

There are also e-sim cards with much bigger data plans. These plans are very convenient to buy online, but more expensive than a local prepaid sim card in Italy.

Vodafone, Tim and Windtre all offer only 1 Italy prepaid sim card deal for tourists, which makes their prices for prepaid sim cards more or less set to the same price of €24.99 EUR ($27.5 USD) apart from iliad which is significantly cheaper.

The catch is that an iliad store is harder to find and for example in Rome city center there are only a few, compared to TIM, Vodafone and Windtre which you can find all over the city center. As of April 2024 I have never seen an Iliad kiosk at any international airport in Italy.

iliad is the cheapest prepaid sim card in Italy for tourists in 2024. They offer the best value for money and cover every tourist destination in Italy with a 4G signal. For €9.99 EUR ($11 USD) you get 150 GB data on their 5G network including unlimited calling minutes in Italy.

However, as said before Traveltomtom readers have reported that they were charged recurring payments from iliad on their credit card after their Italy holiday. Therefore when buying an iliad sim card in Italy, always make sure it is a prepaid sim card with a one time payment or pay cash.

There’s no doubt about it – phones make our lives immeasurably easier and can help you get so much more out of visiting Italy .

Getting cosy with an Italian sim card will give you significantly better coverage and present a significantly cheaper way of accessing the internet and making local calls. While a large percentage of top tourist locations are covered by international networks, if you are say, stuck in Molize (one for the Italians there), you will really need a local sim to get you out.

If you have a European SIM card it will work in Italy. Otherwise, your native sim card  might  work. It also might not. If it does work, you may end up racking up eye-watering charges for roaming and data. You may also find yourself disastrously out of coverage or connectivity when you need it the most. 

Whilst your places to stay in Italy will probably have decent internet, you also want it to work out in the streets right?!

Getting a local sim card in Italy can avoid plenty of drama and save you a chunk of money in the end – if you follow these handy tips (like remembering your passport when you buy one).

Choosing which is the best sim for your travels in Italy will depend largely on your needs and preferences, so there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. Your budget and needs will determine what’s best for you which won’t necessarily work for someone else. 

Let’s take a look at the things you’ll need to consider:

Everyone loves a deal, right? Especially when you’re travelling and potentially on a tight budget in Italy. When it comes to buying sim cards in Italy, the good news is that they’re pretty cheap – so cheap that €1 can get you 2GB of data. 

As with most things, it’s a good idea to shop around, do your research, and always read the fine print. Sometimes buying more can lead to bigger savings in the long run too. 

Some sim cards in Italy expire after a certain period. This means you can’t top up or extend them at all. Most sim cards in Italy include free EU roaming , but make sure to read the fine print here. Sometimes roaming data is capped or limited outside of Italy.

2. Mobile Data

As the number of providers grows, the more the prices of prepaid sims and data fall. In Italy, data prices are extremely reasonable.

Know how much data you’re likely to need. Like most things, it’s cheaper to buy more at a lower cost than to buy less and continuously top up. Top-ups can be costly – keep an eye out for this. 

It’s recommended that before you head off on your travels, spend some time getting to understand your average data usage. When you have a figure, add some padding – you’ll more than likely use more data on your travels than you would at home. 

3. Coverage

Spend some time researching the coverage of the various networks in the areas you’ll be visiting. Mostly, you can expect good 4G coverage, while 5G coverage in Italy is limited to the bigger cities. Vodafone and TIM have the widest 5G coverage, but it’s still very limited geographically, and the best 4G networks. 

The great news is that most tourist spots have excellent network coverage, even those off-the-beaten-track places. 

If you’re heading to Sardinia, you might want to consider a Vodafone Italy sim card for the best coverage. 

4. Bureaucracy

Getting a sim card in Italy is relatively easy to do. There’s not too much documentation required and very little red tape. You will need your passport , so make sure to have this with you. You can register up to three sim cards on one passport.

Most tourists are tempted to grab a sim card at the airport and get it out of the way. However, when I was getting a sim in Greece I found the airport is slightly more reasonable in terms of prices. 

On the upside, purchasing a sim card at an airport can mean dealing with sales staff who speak better English – generally, Italians struggle a bit with English (as English speakers do with Italian!!!). 

The great news is that most cities and tourist destinations offer multiple options when it comes to cell phone stores. 

Purchasing a sim card online is one way to ensure that you don’t need to be dealing with admin on your holiday and you can hit the ground running, as it were. This way also allows you plenty of time to leisurely research the best option for you and make the right choice. 

Don’t forget to order with enough time for delivery before you leave.

A range of options exists to choose from when it comes to picking a sim card for Italy. You can choose local or international sim providers . Many local providers have a range of options specifically for tourists, while the bigger multinationals like Vodafone are well-represented.

I purchased a 50euro SIM card for 1 month in Italy at vodaphone . I’m her for 4 months & they told me I just pay each month another 15 euro for 50g which I did . I’m now in Spain & receiving messages to say I have no gigabyte left. I phoned vodaphone & the guy I spoke to won’t phone me back. He has all my info . What can I do ? I feel they have lied to me ?

Hi, With reference to the TIM 50GB for 15 Euro per month deal you mention. The devil being in the detail, the 50GB only applies if you sign up for TIM Automatic Recharge, so having the 15 Euro paid each month, else you get a lessor 25GB. I believe this is worth highlighting!

Thanks for the detailed information. Can we simply buy a sim card in a supermarket once we arrive in northern Italy (3 zinnen) ? Ideally, a sim that will do our pending trip to Italy in Jan-Feb 2023. However in the middle of 2023 we also need one that will do Italy, France and Swiss networks for a running event. Any suggestions as to a sim that will do all three countries, but especially Italy and France ?

I am not sure about a supermarket bit here phone stores who will send you a sim. You may need a passport and you can encounter a language barrier.

Thanks for the summary. Here’s my question: your Vodafone listing for the tourist plan says it is easily rechargeable on line, but also that the plan lasts for 30 days. I will be in Italy for 33 days. Does that mean I need to buy a new SIM/plan on day 31, or can I recharge my original one?

You should be able to recharge your original SIM card, USUALLY it’s the credit , (data, phone calls, text) that expires after a given period. When buying you should check how long the SIM will remain active.

There’s a good chance you’re going to spend a bit of time waiting in lines when you visit Italy and with the recent development of eSims there really is no need to spend time waiting just to get a sim card.

The best sim card in italy is the Airalo eSim . With Airalo you can purchase your eSim online before you arrive in Italy and activate it at the airport. You won’t waste time finding a store, waiting in line or communicating with the staff. The prices are fairly similar to purchasing a local sim card and you can get as much or as little data as you require.

The cheapest sim card in Italy is offered by Iliad. For just 8 EUR you can get a massive 100GB of data. There are a few catches, however. Firstly, there aren’t a lot of Iliad stores around Italy which makes it quite challenging to obtain a card in the first place. Secondly, there is a hard 8GB cap on EU roaming which makes the card somewhat impractical if you plan to explore other countries. Lastly, some travellers have reported recurring credit card charges with Iliad so it is a good idea to pay with cash.

If Italy is the first part of a larger EU trip then you’re going to want to ensure you get a good local sim card with plenty of data when you arrive. I recommend the Vodafone tourist sim card as it includes 15GB data that can be used around the EU – this should be plenty.

Italy Sim Card Prices

A Tourist Sim Card in Italy costs between 8 EUR and 25 EUR in April 2024, however, the exact price will often depend on the store you visit and the plan you choose.

Alternatively, an eSim in Italy will cost between $4.50 USD and $34 USD. This, again, depends on how much data you require and which eSim provider you choose.

I generally recommend this Airalo plan for most tourists visiting Italy which includes 5GB of data which is valid for 30 days and costs $14.5 USD.

How to Get a Sim Card in Italy

I’ve never had issues finding a store as they can usually be found in major cities, shopping centers, or tourist areas. If possible, I always recommend to to avoid airports and head in to an official store in the city.

Bring the necessary documents: It is always a good idea to carry your passport or identification documents for sim card registration purposes. We’ve found most providers will need to confirm your identity to provide a sim card and it can be a major hassle to head to a store only to have to come back again later with your passport.

Choose your plan: Either request the plan you are after or consult with the staff in the store to select the right plan for you. My recommendations at the beginning of this guide are a good starting point, but the staff will usually be able to suggest the best option.

Pay and activate your card: Pay for the SIM card and plan, and the staff will activate it for you.

Test: It’s always a good idea to check that you can access the internet before you leave the store. I always search for something on Google then refresh my Instagram feed to check it’s working fine.

Where to Get a Sim Card in Italy

At the airport.

Buying a prepaid sim card for Italy at the airport is usually considered the most convenient option for travellers arriving by plane.

However, airport stores selling sim cards are almost guaranteed to charge inflated prices, so if you are a cost-conscious traveller then you should definitely buy your sim card from a store in the city center.

In addition to this, we would argue that buying physical sim cards at all aren’t particularly convenient now that most people use esim compatible phones. If you are looking for the most convenient option, then buying an esim before you arrive or with the airport wifi is much easier and will save you having to queue up or communicate with staff.

If you must purchase a sim card at the airport in Italy then you will be in luck. All major international airports in Italy have stores selling sim cards. Despite the prices being higher than normal, the staff are knowledgable and will be able to get you set up with the correct sim card relatively quickly.

If you want to avoid the inflated sim card prices you’ll find at the airport and your phone isn’t esim compatible, then you’re going to need to head in to a store to buy your sim card.

I recommend visiting one of the official retail stores of the mobile internet operators such as Vodafone, Windtre and Iliad. Your best option is to enter their names into Google Maps and find the branch closest to your hotel or accommodation. Typically the staff in the official stores in Italy are knowledgable and helpful which means you can ensure you’ll walk away with a functioning sim card.

Despite this, it’s always a good idea to check your internet is working before you leave the store by loading a Google search results page and your preferred social media app. You should also ensure you always bring your passport with you when purchasing a sim card in case they need to register it.

If you like to be prepared and would prefer to arrive in Italy with your sim card all sorted and your phone ready to connect to the internet immediately then you should look into purchasing a sim card online.

The first option is to buy your sim card in advance via SimOptions, which is a company that will prepare and ship a sim card directly to your door. It’s a reliable and effective service, but with the invention of eSims it’s becoming obsolete.

What is a SIM Card & Why Do You Need a SIM Card in Italy

A SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) card is a tiny memory card inserted into our phones that allows the phone provider to identify you as a customer and charge you. It also can store information from your phone, like contacts.

There are a ton of reasons why you would want to purchase a SIM card in Italy, whether you are traveling or you’re a new expat in Italy .

• International phone plans through your home provider are likely way more expensive than buying a local SIM card.
• You’ll want to keep in touch with your family and friends and have access to data roaming.
• Avoid being stuck in an emergency situation without a working phone.
• Coverage is likely better from a local provider than your international provider.
• You can’t rely on finding free WiFi everywhere in Italy.

Figuring out your phone plan is one of the first steps you should take as a new expat and part of the overall moving abroad checklist you should be using to ensure a smooth transition into your life abroad.

Can tourists get SIM cards in Italy? Yes! Tourists can get SIM cards in Italy either by signing up for prepaid SIM cards from large providers, regular pay-as-you-go SIM cards or international eSIMs.

Where You Can Buy a SIM Card in Italy

Before I list where you can buy your Italian SIM card, know this: you have to buy it in person.

To legally purchase a SIM card in Italy, you have to present photo ID . For this reason, I do not recommend buying SIM cards online.

There are some providers that allow you to buy the SIM card online, but you would still need to register it in person.

Pro Tip: One of the most convenient places with SIM cards available to purchase in Italy as a tourist is at the airport. Don’t do it! It’s an overpriced tourist trap!

The best way to buy a SIM card in Italy is to go directly to the store of your chosen phone provider. You can find stores in shopping malls and city centers.

Usually when I traveled to Italy (before I lived here), I would end up using my international phone plan for the first few days I arrive in the country as I waited for the SIM to be activated.

This is why, if you’re only traveling to Italy for a short amount of time , like a week, then you may just find it’s easier to pay for your international plan with your domestic provider. Buying a SIM card in Italy is still a cheaper option, but you may lose precious vacation time to go to the phone provider store and wait to activate the SIM.

Italy’s Phone Providers with the Best SIM cards for Tourists & Locals

There are a lot of different phone providers that offer specific tourist SIM Cards in Italy. The most popular are TIM , Vodafone Italy , and WindTre. (Note: I’ve linked English versions of the websites where possible, but you may have to use Google Translate for Italian web pages.)

If you’re going to Italy on vacation as a tourist , then I recommend going with one of these three main providers. They have the more detailed packages for tourists, and the process is very simple to sign up with them.

If you’re living in Italy , then looking into one of the smaller providers could mean lots of savings over time. Some of the smaller providers are branches of the larger ones and run on the larger networks (aka Vodafone and ho Mobile use the same network), so your coverage and customer service are just as good.

Here are smaller providers with cheaper prices that offer good coverage as well including:

• ho Mobile (My provider)
• Iliad – becoming a faster growing, still inexpensive option.
• PosteMobile
• Kena (If you translate this site there is lots of thorough information about how their SIM works specifically.)

What You Need In Order to Purchase an Italian SIM Card

To get a SIM card in Italy, you will need:

• To be at least 16 years old.
• A photo ID so bring your passport!
• A Codice Fiscale. This is a tax code to used for identification in Italy. If you’re living in Italy, you will want to sign up for your Codice Fiscale ASAP through the Agenzia dell’Entrate . If you are a tourist, the phone company will create a Codice Fiscale for you on the spot in-store while you’re purchasing your SIM card.

e-SIMs in Italy

Beyond a physical SIM card, there are now e-SIMs .

e-SIMs, or electronic SIM cards, can be purchased online and allow more flexibility in plan options, country usage and being able to skip the normal SIM card purchase process.

Order your e-SIM online, receive a QR code, scan it and complete setup.

Sounds easy right? It is, but the catch here is that your phone needs to be e-SIM compatible.

Good to know: Many e-SIMs for Italy only cover data and not calls and texting.

How Much SIM cards in Italy Cost

Many companies offer prepaid SIM Cards in Italy that are affordable and ideal for short-term stays .

If you’re staying long-term in Italy, for example studying abroad or moving, prepaid packages may mean you overpay for a SIM card. It is likely cheaper for you to sign up for a phone plan and pay-as-you-go.

A SIM card in Italy comprises two different costs : first, an activation fee usually around the 10 euro mark, and second, a monthly or top-off payment that will differ depending on the plan you sign up for.

For example, with my ho Mobile plan, there was a €9.99 activation fee, and the monthly phone bill price is €6.99. I’ll explain more about this in the next section!

Ricarica or Recharging Your Account

Download your phone provider’s app to easily track how much data you have left for the month.

The “ residuo ” is the amount of money you have left as credit to pay for your monthly phone bill.

The amount (in my case, €6.99) is automatically deducted from this residuo when you pay through the phone app/internet account.

If the residuo amount drops into the negative, all you have to do is “ ricarica ” or top-off your account with the amount of your choice.

I personally always top-off the minimum amount (€5) in case I ever need to stop using the SIM. This way, I don’t have money left over in the residuo .

You can also buy credit in person at places like grocery stores in Italy or “tabaccheria” but be aware you will likely need to pay for it in cash.

In some cases you can also choose to sign up for a pay-by-month plan rather than topping off your account. Although It’s usually a hassle to exit these contracts since you can’t just cancel them on your own. So, pay-by-month is the most flexible option.

How to Activate an Italian SIM Card

Once you’ve signed up for your SIM card it’s now time to activate it so you have a working phone!

Likely, you’ll be signing up in person and the clerk will install and activate the card for you.

You can also do it yourself by making an account with the phone provider, but this is really for particular cases. For example, when I moved to Italy, my family already had an extra SIM card for me to use but because I was not an Italian citizen (yet!), so they used their documents to make the phone account under their name while signing me up through the app.

In order to activate an Italian SIM card, your phone must be “unlocked.” What this means is that sometimes US or foreign phone providers will lock the phone so that it can only be used with that provider. You’ll have to go to them first to make sure they unlock it for you.

The last thing to keep in mind is that your phone will not work immediately. It will take up to 48 hours for the SIM card to activate and for you to start using the data and coverage of your Italian phone plan!

Do you need to change your phone number if you switch to an Italian SIM card? Will you lose information on your phone?

Having an Italian SIM Card means you will now have an Italian phone number . Make sure to keep your original SIM card from your home provider for when your trip is over.

Pro tip : Keep your original SIM card in a safe place, like your wallet or where you keep important documents like your passport.

Switching to an Italian SIM card does not mean you will lose any information on your phone. The only change I had to make on my iPhone when switching to an Italian SIM card was choosing if I wanted to update my FaceTime and WhatsApp number to be my new Italian phone number.

You can try to keep it your old phone number, but it may not work.

The PIN and the PUK: What are they and what do you do with them?

On the card from which you pop out your new SIM, there are two important 4-digit codes: the PIN and the PUK.

When using a SIM card in Italy, every time you turn off your phone and turn it back on, you will have to unlock your SIM card.

This is an extra measure of privacy and security. Enter the four digit PIN code and voila, it’s unlocked! You also have the option to change the 4-digit pin to something you can remember more easily.

I recommend holding onto that card in a safe place, like your wallet, so you don’t have a chance of forgetting it.

After three attempts to unlock your phone with the PIN, you’ll then only be able to unlock it with the PUK code. This is the backup code and should also be kept super secret!

Free EU Roaming

Because Italy is a part of the European Union, almost every member country in Europe has a partner phone provider with Italy’s phone providers. This means free EU roaming – just make sure to turn data roaming on in your phone settings!

This means your phone will work if you travel outside of Italy to another EU country. However, keep in mind not every country in Europe is in the EU. I traveled to Switzerland just across the Italian border and my phone didn’t work the entire trip!

Buying a SIM card in Italy in 2024 is a relatively straightforward process, but there are significant differences to how Italian phone plans work in comparison to where I’m from, the United States.

The best part is that they are an inexpensive way to stay connected to home. Whether you are living in Italy or traveling the country for longer than a week, it’s a worthy process to go through to save money and not have to rely on free WiFi, which is still limited outside of hotels and restaurants.

Hey, following your tips I bought an HO Mobile SIM card. I just think it is worth mentioning that I picked mine in a Edicola and I got three cards instead of just one. For each card, once acrtivated, you and your friend get 5 euros credit. So, if you are travel with someone else, it may be a great idea.

Thanks for info. I am currently in Italy, all together for five weeks. I did go to Vodafone and purchased a SIM card the day after I arrived and have an Italian number. I’m not tech savvy, so excuse me if my following question seems naive: What will happen to texts or vmail messages that people will leave on my US number, when I have the Vodafone sim card installed while I’m in Italy? For instance, I get lots of texts back home, many do not have WhatsApp or even know I’m away. They will be sending me texts. What happens to those texts and/or vmails? When I get back home, and reinsert my US sim card, what happens? Thanks in advance.

I hope you are enjoying your time in Italy! As for your US SIM card and phone number, you would have to reinsert the SIM into your phone to see any messages or calls that have arrived there. The texts and calls will all remain on your SIM card even while you are not using it, so it is important to store it in a safe place that you will remember!

Once you reinsert it, if you send a text or make a call (depending on your phone plan), your phone service provider will reactivate your plan.

So, you’ll still have all the messages you receive to your US number on your US SIM card whenever you choose to reinsert it. If you wanted to reinsert it now to let people know about your travels, you just have to be aware that you could be charged by your US phone service provider and remember your Italian SIM card pin for when you reinsert the Italian SIM. I hope that this is all clear and let me know if you have any other questions! 🙂

My daughter will be in Italy on a student visa. Short-term, only a few months. Do you know if this impacts the need for a codice fiscale (i.e., will she need to get one on her own, or will they treat her as a tourist and create one at the phone store)?

When I studied abroad, I signed up for a phone plan in which they created the codice fiscale for me at the phone provider store! It basically worked as a pay-as-you-go system, so I would just recharge the account once a month to keep the plan going. I believe this will work also for your daughter.

Now, if you want to be safe, you can easily get a codice fiscale, either before coming to Italy or upon arrival. If you want to get it before coming to Italy, you can do so through your local Italian embassy/consulate. Or, once you get to Italy, you fill out this form and submit it to the local office of the Agenzia delle Entrate.

As I said, she should also be fine just walking into the phone store and explaining she needs a SIM card as a tourist for a couple months! I hope this information is helpful!

Based on your needs, I found a couple of options for you:

– TIM in viaggio pass : 10 GB with 500 minutes for calls and 500 texts, valid for 30 days and costs €20 – Iliad Prepaid SIM card : €7.99 per month for 80 GB of data and unlimited texts and calls, the catch is that Iliad stores are usually a bit harder to locate since it is a smaller brand

I believe Vodafone may also have a good offer for your needs, but I couldn’t find the information on their website. Regardless, I recommend buying your SIM card in person in Bari at one of the phone providers’ stores so that they can help you install and activate the SIM card and so that you can get the best deal (the stores are always a better deal than tourist traps like the airport stands). I’m glad you found the post helpful! I believe phone providers say 24-48 hours for activation, but in reality, when I did it, it was activated within less than 24 hours. I’ve even read about people having their SIM activated and ready for use within an hour of purchasing it! The best thing to do to get the SIM to be activated as quickly as possible is to get it at a phone provider store and not try to buy your own and activate it yourself. Usually, if you can go to a store and get help from a clerk to do the whole registration and activation process for you, the SIM card will be ready to use faster!

Hi Naama. The SIM cards from any of the main providers should work in Europe but they have limited amounts of data. You would have to speak directly with the provider to understand how you could buy more data/calls/messages!

Visiting Italy soon? Make sure to know what to expect when it comes to purchasing an Italy SIM card .

In this guide, we’ll explain where to buy a SIM card in Italy in person and online. We’ll also discuss prepaid SIM cards and eSIMs if your mobile supports them.

That said, if you’re traveling to other countries in Europe, you should be able to use the same SIM card because most SIM card providers also offer coverage in other European countries.

Before you read this guide, you may wonder if you actually need a SIM card in Italy. If you don’t mind not having Internet, you’ll likely find free Wifi in restaurants, shopping malls, and hotels.

That said, if you need data to get around, call an Uber, or translate Italian – you may want to get a SIM card for your travels in Italy.

Note that your mobile phone provider may already offer Italian coverage if you’re European. If that’s the case, you won’t need a SIM card for your adventures in Italy.

Best SIM Cards In Italy

If you’re traveling in Italy, we recommend using a SIM card from Vodafone, Iliad, TIM, or Airalo. (I’ll get back to Airalo later on, so keep reading to learn more!)

That said, if you’re planning on visiting other countries during your trip to Europe , you might want to make sure to pick an option that offers coverage in other European countries.

How To Buy A SIM Card In Italy

You can either buy a Europe prepaid SIM card in person in some international airports, mobile provider stores, convenience stores, or online.

Usually, you can expect higher costs and low data offers at the airport, so we don’t recommend buying a SIM card at the airport.

That said, you won’t necessarily find SIM card shops in every airport, so it’s essential to keep this in mind. And, when you see a shop, you might also have limited options.

For this reason, I’d recommend buying a SIM card directly from the mobile provider store. Note that you may need your passport to buy one.

Although, this means you won’t get data right upon your arrival. So, if you prefer to be connected at all times, you could use an eSIM or purchase a European prepaid SIM card online.

Now, let’s take a look at the data plans offered by Vodafone, Iliad, and TIM.

Vodafone Italy SIM Cards

Vodafone Italy offers a plan called ‘Vodafone Holiday’ to tourists:

• 300 minutes & SMS to your home country
• 2 GB of data

As a visitor, this is a good option for Italy, depending on the length of your trip.

Iliad SIM Cards

Iliad has several different prepaid plans available:

• Giga 120: 120 GB, one month, EUR 9.99
• Giga 80: 80 GB, one month, EUR 7.99
• Data 300: 300 GB, one month, EUR 13.99

TIM SIM Cards

TIM offers a special ‘TIM tourist’ plan to travelers, which includes the following:

Overall, we think Iliad is the best option if you plan to buy your SIM card in person. That said, any would do if you can’t find their store!

How To Buy An Italy Prepaid SIM Card Online

If you wish to have your SIM card ready for your arrival, you could purchase it online or on websites like Amazon.

You’ll find different plans on Amazon. For example, the Orange Holiday Europe Prepaid SIM Card works in more than 30 countries and gives you 20BG of data for 14 days. Italy is included.

But there are many other options worth considering, so have a look and make sure the countries you plan on visiting are listed.

How To Buy An eSIM Card For Italy

eSIM is a new concept that allows you to have a virtual SIM card inside your phone. If your mobile phone supports eSIM cards – it’s definitely one of the best options to get data in Italy.

I started using eSIM as soon as my mobile phone supported it. And I first tried it when visiting my family in Canada. To buy eSIMs, I usually use Airalo . Keep reading to learn more about the best eSIMs in Italy.

Airalo Italy

If you want to buy an eSIM for Italy, you could purchase one on Airalo . This website offers many eSIM cards worldwide and special plans for Europe and Italy. I’ve been using Airalo in Europe for several months, and it works fine.

Here are the options available :

• Mamma Mia: 1 GB, valid for 7 days for $4.50
• Mamma Mia: 2 GB, valid for 15 days for $8
• Mamma Mia: 3 GB, valid for 30 days for $10
• Mamma Mia: 5 GB, valid for 30 days for $14.50
• Mamma Mia: 10 GB, valid for 30 days for $24
• Mamma Mia: 20 GB, valid for 30 days for $33

Here’s an overview of the options available in Europe :

• 1 GB, valid for 7 days for $5

The options mentioned above are part of Eurolink and offer coverage in 39 countries, including Italy.

Alternatively, if you’re traveling in other countries that are not mentioned on the list, you can try Discover Global, which offers coverage in 87 countries, including Italy.

• 5 GB, valid for 30 days for $35

Now, one important thing to note about Airalo is that you’ll need to keep an eye out for the provider in each country. Suppose you ever have trouble connecting to the Internet during your trip. In that case, it might be because you’re connecting automatically to networks and need to select a network manually instead.

When you purchase the eSIM, you’ll get access to the list of networks supported in each country.

Final Thoughts On SIM Cards In Italy

As you can see, getting a prepaid SIM card in Italy or even an eSIM for your travels in Italy is pretty easy. You’ll even be able to stay connected wherever you go in Europe without changing your SIM card, especially if you purchase a European SIM card .

I believe the eSIM card is the most convenient way to get data in Italy if you wish to have data upon your arrival. This way, you won’t need to go to a store to buy a SIM card. Obviously, you need to make sure your mobile phone supports eSIM first.

Italian SIM Card companies available

When it comes to finding the best Italian SIM card for your next trip, there are four main providers available.  Vodafone, Windtre  (formerly Wind and 3),  Tim , and  Iliad  all offer prepaid SIM cards with different plans designed to meet the needs of travelers. Let’s take a look at each of them.

Vodafone SIM Card options for tourists

Vodafone is one of the most traditional mobile providers in Italy and offers excellent coverage throughout the country. They have many different offers for people who live in Italy (most of them require an Italian bank or local document). For tourists, they currently have only one offer available, the  Vodafone Dolce Vita,  which includes:

• 30 GB in Italy (15 GB in the EU)
• 600 minutes domestic and to many international destinations
• Valid for: 30 days
• No activation cost

Price : €24.99

This SIM card is sold exclusively to tourists traveling in Italy and it is basically the only prepaid option they have available. You will need to present an official ID document when making your purchase.

Windtre SIM Card options for tourists

Windtre is the result of a merger between two established mobile providers in Italy, Wind and 3. The merger expanded the wireless network coverage in Italy and provided customers with better services at competitive prices. Since 2017, we have always gotten prepaid SIM cards in Italy from Wind and we must say that we are still happy with the options they continue to offer after the rebrand.

The best prepaid SIM card for tourists from Windtre is called “ Tourist Pass ” and it includes:

• 20GB (13.7 GB in EU)
• 100 minutes in Italy and 100 international minutes

TIM is another popular mobile provider in Italy that offers both prepaid and postpaid plans. They currently have one prepaid SIM card designed for tourists which is called  Tim Tourist . It includes the following:

• 50 Giga (no EU coverage)
• 200 minutes to call in Italy and abroad

Now that you know all the options available, it is clear that  Iliad offers the cheapest prepaid SIM card in Italy  for tourists.

However, there is a catch. Iliad’s plan is an amazing deal but their  data coverage in the EU is limited , so if you will be traveling to multiple countries, it may not be the best offer for you. If this is your case, it may be worth considering an international SIM card instead (more on that later).

For traveling only within Italy, Iliad is currently the best option for getting a local SIM card.

Where to buy a SIM card in Italy

There are two ways you can buy a SIM card for your trip to Italy:

The easiest way to buy a prepaid SIM card in Italy is by going to any  official mobile operator’s store . Just pick the provider you like best and check where they have the closest store. Most of them will also help you set up the phone and activate the SIM card for you.

Newspaper stands and small local markets also normally sell prepaid SIM cards and additional credits, if you need those.

Even though some of the Italian mobile providers offer the possibility to purchase SIM cards through their website, in our experience, this never works. We once tried buying online and there were so many errors with processing and with the order that we decided to give up.

If you want to buy your SIM card online to avoid the hassle of looking for a store when you arrive in Italy, the  best option is to get an e-SIM instead .

Best SIM card if you will be traveling to multiple countries

Even though you can clearly get affordable deals on prepaid SIM cards in Italy using the local providers, they, unfortunately, don’t offer a lot of data on other EU countries. If you will be traveling to multiple countries, we recommend considering an  international SIM card instead .

We have tried many options for SIM cards in the past and our  favorite two brands are  Airalo and Nomad . They both sell e-SIMs that work internationally. You simply select the destinations you will be visiting during your trip and you can buy a mobile plan that is tailored to your needs.

The internet speed is very good and being able to activate your phone as soon as you land is a lifesaver.

Can i buy a sim card at the airport when i arrive in italy.

Yes, you can buy a prepaid SIM card at the airport. However, the prices and offers at airports are normally  much more expensive  than at regular stores.

If you want to get connected as soon as you land, consider getting an  e-SIM instead .

Do you need an ID to buy a SIM card in Italy?

Yes,  you will need a valid ID  to buy a SIM card in Italy. This can be either your passport or an Italian ID card. Some of the stores also accept other forms of identification such as driver’s licenses. Just make sure to bring it with you when getting the SIM card.

Tourists are not able to get long-term mobile plans because they require you to present proof of residence or have an account at an Italian bank. So make sure you are looking into prepaid SIM cards and not long-term plans.

How do I activate my SIM card in Italy?

As you have seen, most of the prepaid SIM cards in Italy come with an additional activation fee. The people who work at the store usually help you get started, but in general, it is very straightforward. You can just  put the SIM card  into your phone and  follow the guidelines  on how to select or activate the specific plan you bought.

It is very important that you activate your specific plan right away, otherwise, you will consume data with the general fees, which are usually very high.

Isn’t there free roaming within the EU? Why is the EU data coverage so limited with Italian providers?

Yes, there is free roaming within the EU since the law was passed in 2017. However, that does not mean that the data plan you have in your home country will be fully available abroad. What local mobile providers do is limit the availability of EU data coverage to only a part of the total plan.

Will I pay for the roaming in Italy?

Yes, you will pay roaming in Italy,  unless your SIM card specifically provides EU data coverage . Make sure to read carefully about the limitations of your specific plan before traveling abroad.

First you need to assess what you need phone data for, when you need to access it and how much you think you will use. This is going to depend on how much you rely on or need apps, social media and email. 

Here is a quick guide to help you assess your usage:

• Android: Settings > Connections > Data usage

Do I need local and international calls and text messaging?

Most SIM card providers will package up local and international calls plus SMS or text messaging into their offer but in reality you may not need this at all. 

The best way to communicate with family and friends at home when abroad are with wifi based apps like WhatsApp, FaceTime or Skype. Just make sure everyone is connected before you depart. 

Italians love to communicate on WhatsApp. If you are renting apartments on AirBnB or other booking sites, it is most likely that the owners will prefer that you contact them with WhatsApp. The same goes for tour operators. 

So unless you want to talk on a landline then you are unlikely to use much of this allowance.

Families and group travel

If you are traveling as a family or as part of a bigger group, have a think about how many devices need to be connected with mobile data.

The best solution for a group of two or more may be a portable wifi device that offers unlimited daily data rather than separate SIM cards.

Here are the main options for accessing the internet while you are in Italy. Chances are you will use a combination of these options so it is good to know what is available before you arrive.

Use your hotel or accommodation wifi and free wifi hotspots

For those that use minimal data and do not need their device for navigation or communication, the cheapest and easiest way to use your phone Italy is to connect to your hotel or accommodation wifi. Speeds are probably not as high as you experience in your country but for minimal data usage it is fine.

You can also try to use free wifi hotspots around Italy but be aware that they are not as common as in the US, UK or Australia. You will need to register and speeds are likely to be slow if you can connect at all

Do not expect to find free wifi in cafes or restaurants either. Italians have not adopted an “always on” culture and prefer to keep their eating and drinking establishments for meals and talking to one another.

Use your carrier’s international day pass

Telecommunications companies from around the world now offer international day passes to their customers who want the convenience of keeping their phone and number while traveling. 

You will need to sign up to the plan separately to your existing contract and additional fees will be triggered against your account when you land in Italy or international destination. The pass will renew after 24 hours until you return home and connect to your standard network.

There is no doubt that this option is convenient however it is an expensive approach when you calculate the length of your trip and data usage. They are best suited to shorter trips and for those that want a simple back up solution (albeit an expensive one).

There are four different cellular or mobile networks in Italy, TIM, Vodafone, 3, and Wind. TIM Mobile and Vodafone offer the best prepaid SIM options for tourists visiting Italy.

This is a great low cost option if you are happy to swap out your usual SIM or a have a spare GSM enabled smartphone you can use. You will need to spend some time setting this up when you arrive by presenting your passport at a local outlet.

• TIM Mobile – On the TIM tourist deal, €24.99 gets you 50GB of 4G internet plus 200 minutes of local and international calls and free chat over WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger. Valid for 30 days only – more info

Above all, turn off international roaming on your phone prior to departure if you have not purchased an international day pass. The last thing you want is to be accruing huge costs for data and phone usage before your vacation even begins.

Manage your apps

Before you leave for Italy, spend a little time reviewing which of your apps are using the most data. In general, social media apps like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter as well as entertainment or streaming apps like YouTube and Spotify use lots of data. The same goes for Google Maps and Uber and fitness apps. You can restrict the access your phone has to data for those apps – directions for both iPhone and Android here .

Your device may use data in the background, even when you’re not actively using it. To reduce your background data, you can try switching off automatic:

• App updates
• File transfers
• Email refresh and attachment downloads

Next set up Google Maps and Google Translate to work offline before you leave (best to do this over wifi)

• Google Maps – search for the area you want to save eg Rome. Now zoom out to show the whole city or area. At the bottom of the screen, tap where it says the area name (Rome” in our example). Then click “Download” on the new screen. 
• Google Translate – go to offline translation and download Italian as well as English 

How to avoid international roaming charges on calls and text

We use the following apps to communicate with family and friends at home when we are in Italy. As we mentioned above, your accommodation is likely to have decent wifi so you can use these apps over that connection instead of your mobile plan.

• WhatsApp – for text, voice and video calls
• FaceTime – video calls between Apple devices
• Facebook Messenger – instead of text
• Skype – when the other two aren’t working

In the unlikely event of an emergency you can always send a quick text before you can reach a location where you can access wifi such as your hotel.

Disconnect (a little)

Remember to put the phone away and spend time just soaking up the incredible atmosphere. Who knows when you’ll be back in Italy again.

This is an identity number that can be used in Italy’s tax system.

If you are currently residing in Italy, you need to contact the Agenzia dell’Entrate as soon as possible to register for your Codice Fiscale .

While you are in the store purchasing your SIM card, if you are a tourist, the phone company will immediately generate a Codice Fiscale for you on the spot in the store.

Where To Buy a SIM Card in Italy

First, it’s important to remember that you can’t just order a SIM online in Italy over the phone or online; you’ll need to go to a store and pick one out.

Due to the legal requirements of purchasing a SIM card in Italy, we strongly advise against ordering SIM cards online for shipping.

Buying a SIM card at the airport is also not recommended either due to the high prices and limited data plans that are typically available there. Keep in mind that not all airports have stores selling SIM cards. And when you do find a store, your choices may be limited.

Getting a SIM card straight from the store of your chosen cell service provider is strongly advised. Bear in mind that you might need your passport to get one.

Take into account that if you’ll just be in Italy for a short time, say a week, it may be more convenient to simply pay for the international plan rather than buying a SIM card. The SIM card is still less expensive, but it requires a trip to the phone company and some of your vacation time to activate the SIM.

How To Activate a SIM Card in Italy

The SIM card you ordered must be activated before it can be used in a phone.

The card will be installed and activated for you by the sales clerk if you sign up in person.

In order to use an Italian SIM card in Italy, your phone must be “unlocked.” This means that in some cases, a phone’s provider from say, the United States or somewhere abroad, may lock it for use solely on their network. You should visit them first to verify if they are willing to unlock it for you.

Finally, bear in mind that you will have to wait for your phone to start working. The SIM card activation process can take up to 48 hours.

You can add money to your pay-as-you-go SIM at any time after you’ve bought it.

SIM card topping up refers to the practice of adding more data to a SIM card after the initial allotment has been used up.

A provider’s app or a trip to a physical store are both viable options. Depending on how much extra data, minutes, and texting you need, topping up can cost as little as €10 or as much as €50.

Great article, but it still doesn’t seem to address a specific issue. Airalo app does not provide call minutes. I need to get an eSIM, preferably before leaving the US, and be able to make and receive calls on a local number – I don’t want to force those calling me to have to place International call, hence the need for a local phone number in Italy. And, I will be spending a great deal of time away from available Wi-Fi sources. Any suggestion would be most appreciated

Hi Frank, all of the eSIMs available on Airalo are data-only, meaning they’re not assigned a phone number and cannot make or receive calls or text messages. So yes you are right, the eSIM is the solution to have data at a reasonable price while travelling internationally without needing another local sim card. But you can have eSIM active for data and your own physical SIM from the USA to receive or make calls.

If you need to receive calls while in Italy, there are two options:

You can get Airalo eSIM for all your data needs and when someone from the USA will call your US number, they will be only charged the same as if you were in the US. However, you will be charged roaming charges based on your mobile provider. Check with them as maybe receiving calls might not be too expensive.

Your other option is to get a local Italian SIM from a mobile provided once you land. So if anyone calls that number, you won’t be charged but, of course, if it is a call from the US they will have to pay an international phone call fee and if you were to call the USA it would be the same for you.

The easiest option to have free phone calls between USA and ITALY is to simply use data-based apps for phone calls. You can download Whatsapp APP: a free, multiplatform messaging app that lets you make video and voice calls, send text messages, and more — all with just a Wi-Fi connection. It’s super easy and anyone in the US can do the same. You can then call for free! The alternative is to use Facebook messenger to make a call which is also data-based. Of course, then there is also ZOOM, SKYPE etc.

Today, it is easier than ever before to have your phone up and running when you land in Europe. Here is our guide for how to get a SIM card in Italy.

How To Use Your Phone in Italy

Option 1: use your own phone with your us network.

Up until a few years ago, it was either impossible or incredibly expensive to use your phone in Italy without getting an Italian SIM Card. Roaming charges could turn into hundreds of dollars and the service would be shaky at best.

Now the four major cell phone providers have partnered with Italian companies to help American phones work abroad much more easily. If you are planning to be in Italy for 2 weeks or less, it might be worth using your existing phone plan. However, using an Italian SIM card isn’t overly expensive if needed. Below is the breakdown by provider for how to use your phone in Italy .

Verizon and AT&T:

Verizon and AT&T allow you to use your phone abroad for $10 a day per line if you set up their specific travel passes.

This option is ideal as it works for most countries in Europe. If you are traveling to multiple countries, your phone will automatically connect.

Verizon has an option to pay a flat fee for a month of international service. Speeds and data limits are often lower than their travel pass, so be sure to speak with a representative to determine the best option for you.

Most Sprint plans include international coverage if you have a smartphone. Beware though, that Sprint abroad does have reduced internet speed. You can check their current rates here , which start at $5 per day or $25 per week.

Of the four main carriers, T-Mobile is a multinational company based in Germany. The main perk of this is that with T-Mobile, your phone will connect automatically in Europe.

T-Mobile currently offers several international packages for their customers, ranging from $5 per day or $50 for 30 days.

Option 2: Get an Italy SIM Card

Many phones today are sold unlocked. If it’s still locked, the phone will only work with a SIM card from your service provider. By law, all US providers must unlock a phone if the customer requests it, so be sure to do this before you leave the country.

You’ll also need to make sure your smartphone is compatible with GSM (Global System for Mobile) service in order to work overseas. If your phone was made before 2015, check with your carrier to make sure that your phone is compatible and unlocked..

Choosing the Right Plan:

The following providers are most popular in Italy, especially with pay-as-you-go sim deals: Vodafone , TIM , and Iliad . You’ll be able to find all of these shops in any big city such as Rome, Milan, Venice, Florence, etc. What’s important to note is that you will need to bring a form of ID with you, preferably a passport, when buying a local SIM in Italy.

Our favorite provider for SIM cards is TIM. They are easy to work with and you can usually find someone in their stores that speaks English and is willing to help.

TIM offers a wide range of deals too, which means they have something for everyone. You can find their stores in any major city in Italy and can even buy their SIM cards online ! We recommend going to an actual store in the city as you’ll pay higher rates in any airport or train station.

Topping Up:

Once you’ve purchased your pay-as-you-go SIM, you can top it up on the go. Topping up your SIM card essentially means adding more data after you have used it up.

You can do this by downloading the provider’s app, or going to one of their stores and doing it in person. Topping up can cost as little as €10 or €50 depending on how much data, minutes, and messaging you need.

If you are visiting for up to two weeks, we recommend using your American plan abroad. If you are staying more than a couple weeks, the SIM Card could save you a lot of money.

SIM Cards for Europe:

If you’re traveling to more countries than just Italy, then TIM is a great option for a SIM card since they offer free roaming in Europe. However, there’s another company called Orange that can mail you a SIM card before you even leave home.

However, if you have a pretty new phone (2018 or so), they have an e-SIM option that’s the easiest method. You purchase a plan and a digital SIM card with an ID that you add to your phone. Then whenever you arrive in Europe, simply switch to the other digital SIM and you’re ready to go!

They offer service in most European countries too. Their rates are a little higher than most in-country providers, but if you’re looking for convenience before you leave home, you might like using Orange.

Hello, we are planning os being in Sicily for 10 days in late October. After reading up on various plans, I’m leaning toward Vodaphone, as they have the best coverage, and we are driving all over by ourselves. There are four of us, and rather than waste the better part of two hours in a store, it seems that some are saying I can buy the SIM cards online and register them also online. Is this possible with Vodaphone?

We are heading to the Amalfi Coast in Spetember 2022, we are from Canada and I’m wondering about purchasing a Sims card as we will be in Italy (Amalfi, Sicily) for two weeks but then travelling to Malta for another two weeks. These days having reliable mobile data on your phone is a must when visiting Italy. But don’t be one of the many travelers who spend a fortune (and get slow/inconsistent service) using their home plan’s international data service package. Buying an Italian eSIM data plan is a much cheaper option.

In this guide, I’ll cover how to find the best eSIM for Italy so you have consistent high-speed mobile data without spending a lot of money.

Why You Should Avoid Using Your Home Plan’s International Data Plan

Your current mobile phone provider will probably have an international data plan option but these plans are expensive and the service is often slow, inconsistent, and has limited data allowances.

Many TMobile plans come with free unlimited international data plans but you’re only guaranteed 2g data speeds… which will struggle to load Google Maps or even email.

Then there is the AT&T International Day Pass which costs $10/day. They also have their AT&T Passport plan which is a monthly plan that’s either $70/month for 2GB of data or $140/month for 6GB of data. And then they charge a crazy high overage of $30 per GB.

These “international data plans” are 5X as expensive as buying an Italian eSIM data plan—for example, eSIM data plans from Orange or Holafly will cost you around $2-$3/day.

Comparing The Best eSIM Data Plans for Italy

There are a handful of different mobile providers that offer eSIM data plans for Italy.

The first (and most complicated) option is to buy an eSIM/SIM data plan from one of the main Italian mobile carriers ( Wintre , TIM Italy , and Vodafone Italy ). The problem for visitors is that many of these Italian plans are intended for people who live in Italy so you either need to jump through some hoops by signing up for a long-term contract or providing a local address and Codice fiscale  (tax code).

The other option is to buy a prepaid eSIM data plan that’s geared toward short-term visitors. These plans are much more “tourist-friendly” so you don’t have to mess with registration, etc.

For this guide, I’ll focus on these “tourist-friendly” eSIM plans.

Each eSIM plan will vary slightly so it’s important to pay attention to the specific details of each plan. But here are the main things to consider:

• Data Allowance: Most plans give you a set amount of mobile data (i.e. 5GB, 10GB, 30GB, etc) but others give you unlimited data over a set amount of time (5 days, 15 days, 30 days, etc).
• Plan Length: eSIM data plans can be valid anywhere from about 5 days to 90 days. It depends on your plan so it’s something you’ll want to consider when picking a plan.
• Mobile Hot Spot Tethering: Most eSIM plans don’t allow you to use your phone as a mobile hot spot.
• NOTE: You can still use iMessage to “text” between iPhones but you can’t send messages between iPhones and Android phones. Or you can download WhatsApp to send messages over data (which is what most Europeans do).

Orange Holiday Europe eSIM (50GB): $59.90

• Price:  $59.90 (Check  SimOptions  for details)
• Data:  50GB
• Service Speed:  4G/LTE
• Calls:  Unlimited within Europe and 120 min outside of Europe.
• Texts/SMS:  Unlimited within Europe and 1000 outside of Europe.
• Credit validity:  28 day
• Data Tethering:  Allowed
• Usable on any device (phones, tablets, hotspots…)
• This eSIM plan comes with a French phone number that can still be used anywhere in Europe
• Service works everywhere in the EU

If you need a ton of mobile data, consider the newly released  Orange Holiday Europe 50GB eSIM data plan  which is a beefed-up version of the Orange Holiday Europe eSIM. It has 50GB of data and it’s valid for 28 days (compared to 14 days with the Orange Holiday Europe plan). This eSIM also comes with many features you don’t find with other plans—including international voice calling and texts (it gives you an actual French phone number that works anywhere in Europe).

The Orange Holiday Europe eSIM plan also allows you to use your phone as a mobile hotspot so you can put that extra data allowance to good use. Orange is also one of the largest mobile companies in Europe so you’ll always get great coverage and high data speeds.

ORANGE HOLIDAY EUROPE ESIM: $49.90

• Price:  $49.90 (Check  SimOptions  for details)
• Data:  20GB (Orange often upgrades the plan to 30GB of data)
• Credit validity:  14 day
• Data Tethering: Allowed
• This eSIM plan comes with a French phone number that can still be used in Italy

The Orange Holiday Europe eSIM data plan is the most robust eSIM plan on this list because it comes with many features you don’t find with other plans—including international voice calling and texts (it gives you an actual French phone number that will work anywhere in Europe). The Orange Holiday Europe eSIM plan also allows you to use your phone as a mobile hotspot.

You’ll get 20GB of data with this plan but Orange sometimes runs a special where they give you an extra 10GB. But even 20GB should be plenty of data for most users. Orange is also one of the largest mobile companies in Europe so you’ll always get great coverage and high data speeds.

The potential downside to the Orange Holiday Europe eSIM plan is that it’s only valid for 14 days once activated so it’s not great for longer visits (but you can always buy a second plan).

Bouygues My European eSIM: $44.90

Bouygues is another major French telecommunications company and they’ve recently released their own prepaid eSIM data plan to compete with the popular Orange Holiday Europe eSIM plan. I used a prepaid Bouygues SIM card on a previous trip to Europe so I’m glad they’re finally offering an eSIM.

There’s a lot to like about the Bouygues My European eSIM plan—especially since it comes standard with 30GB of data and unlimited calls/texts within Europe. I also like how this Bouygues eSIM plan is valid for 30 days so it’s a great option for longer trips.

• Price: $44.90 (Check SimOptions for details)
• Service Speed: 4G/LTE
• Calls: Unlimited within Europe and credit for overseas calls
• Texts/SMS: Unlimited within Europe and credit for overseas sms
• Credit validity: 30 day
• Phone Number: This eSIM card comes with a French phone number
• Coverage : Anywhere within the European Union (except Switzerland)

ORANGE HOLIDAY ZEN ESIM: $29.90

• Price:  $29.90 (Check  SimOptions  for details)
• Data:  8GB (Orange sometimes gives you 15GB of data)
• Service Speed:  4G/LTE
• Calls:  Unlimited within Europe and 30 min outside of Europe.
• Texts/SMS:  Unlimited within Europe and 200 outside of Europe.

The Orange Holiday Zen eSIM is the budget version of the Orange Holiday Europe eSIM plan. It comes with 8GB of data and has fewer voice minutes and texts, otherwise, it’s the same as the Orange Holiday Europe eSIM plan.

Most users will use more than 8GB of data while traveling for a week or two but light data users could easily use less than 8GB of data during a typical 10-14 day trip.

HOLAFLY UNLIMITED ESIM: STARTING AT $34.00

Holafly  is a new data-only eSIM provider that I previously used while visiting Italy and had a great experience using (read my  Holafly eSIM Review  to get a more in-depth look). Holafly sells both Italy-specific plans and Europe-wide data plans. Holafly isn’t an actual mobile carrier but they rent bandwidth from a local Italian mobile provider (Wind Tre) so you’re more likely to get less priority on the Wind Tre network during peak usage times.

Unlike other mobile companies, Holafly gives you unlimited data and a local phone number with 60 minutes of credit for making/receiving calls from European numbers. I also like how Holafly’s plans come in durations from 5 to 90 days—so you don’t have to over/underbuy for your particular trip.

Holafly doesn’t allow data tethering in most cases so you won’t be able to use your phone as a mobile hotspot.

MORE TIPS ON USING YOUR MOBILE PHONE IN ITALY

I’ve written extensively about using  smartphones and data plans in Europe  as well as tips for  buying SIM Cards For Visiting Europe  but below are some more helpful tips about using your phone in Italy.

GET A PORTABLE BATTERY CHARGER

Traveling with your phone will quickly drain your batteries so I highly recommend a portable battery. I use  Anker PowerCore 10000  because it’s tiny and affordable but there are multiple options.

TAKE STEPS TO LOWER YOUR MOBILE DATA USAGE

Data can be expensive and it’s extremely easy to unknowingly burn through a lot of data because many apps use data in the background. Facebook, email, Instagram, Snapchat… those all constantly use data throughout the day without you knowing it. That’s it’s important to know how to limit your data usage.

USE AIRPLANE MODE AND BLOCK DATA TO SPECIFIC APPS

I’ll put my phone in Airplane Mode because that disables all data (but GPS still works in Airplane Mode). You can also go into the settings and disable data access to each individual app. I’ll go in and turn every off except for things like Google Maps or others that I’ll use more frequently — this way when I turn off Airplane Mode only those apps that will use data. Then I’ll turn Airplane Mode back on when I’m done.

DOWNLOAD OFFLINE MAPS

Google Maps lets you download entire city maps so they can be used offline. As an added bonus, GPS doesn’t use data so offline Google Maps works fairly well (but not all functionality works). Here is a good  YouTube video  that explains everything.

Compared to other mobile operators in the country, TIM has the best Internet connection in Italy, including rural places where the other companies do not work so well as TIM. Now let’s check some of the best options provided by this network operator:

Vodafone Italy

Although it is not considered the main telecommunication company in Italy, Vodafone is the second largest mobile network in the country. How do I purchase the voucher?

To buy a Voucher for the TIM Tourist offer click on the PURCHASE button, insert your details and pay using a credit card or PayPal.

Once the purchase is confirmed, you’ll receive an email at the address you provided containing your personal PIN code, which you can use at any TIM Store across Italy to collect the TIM Card with the active TIM Tourist offer, with no additional cost.

How do I activate the offer with the voucher?

Once the customer who purchased the Voucher for the exclusive TIM Tourist offer abroad has arrived in Italy, he/she should visit a TIM Store and show the Voucher containing his/her PIN code, plus an identification document. The TIM Store will carry out the standard activation procedures: collection of documents, visual confirmation of the customer and presentation of an identification document (e.g. ID card or passport).

Once the TIM Card is activated, the TIM Tourist offer will be activated within 24 hours with no additional cost.

How do I withdraw from the purchase?

The customer can withdraw from the Voucher purchase, pursuant to art. 52 of the Italian Consumer Code within 14 days from receipt of the email confirming conclusion of the contract by Telecom Italia.

The TIM Tourist offer related to the Voucher cannot be activated online, so the customer is aware that the only way to activate the offer is to show the Voucher in a TIM Store in Italy. In order to discourage fraudulent practices, TIM reserves the right to carry out checks on the use of the PIN code; if within 96 hours from the withdrawal request the PIN has not been used, TIM will cancel it and refund the customer, within 14 days (from the day on which TIM was informed of the customer’s decision to withdraw from the purchase), the amount paid by him/her to purchase the Voucher.

What if the offer is not activated?

In the event of problems during the activation phase of the Offer, the customer can write to the email address [email protected] forwarding the email received for the SIM purchase and writing: the email address used for the purchase, the PIN received and the last 4 digits of the CoC used for the purchase. Alternatively, as with any purchase with the CDC, in the event of failure to use the offer, the customer can directly contact the bank that issued the CDC used for online payment. Following the appropriate checks jointly with TIM, the refund will be made directly to the Customer's CdC.

The active profile on the TIM Card is TIM BASE19: at the end of 200 minutes of traffic, call all national mobile and landline numbers at 19 cents per minute. Tolled calls in advance of 60 seconds and connection fee of 20 cents. Cost of SMS at 29 cents, MMS at € 1.30. GIGA Internet traffic (GPRS / EDGE / UMTS / HSPA / LTE) included in the offer is valid for Internet browsing in Italy and roaming in EU countries on all APNs (ibox.tim.it, wap.tim.it and blackberry .net). Kim recently got a call from Mary in Ventura, California. Mary had been on a trip out of the country when she was forced to re-route to Germany during a storm. Mary was using Consumer Cellular and couldn’t get her phone to connect to the free local Wi-Fi at the airport.

There was a long time between flights, and Mary was stuck. She got a hotel room to talk to her family and use the internet to pass the time. When she returned home, Mary asked Kim what she could have done in that situation. Here’s what Kim had to say.

Call your carrier

If you’re ever stuck abroad, the first thing to do is call your carrier. In Mary’s case, she needed to authorize Consumer Cellular to turn on her international plan. This would have let her call, text and use data internationally.

Some phone service providers have this turned on by default but others, such as Consumer Cellular, require you to opt in. Here’s how to turn on international calling and data services with some leading service providers. 

How to turn on international services with T-Mobile

T-Mobile offers free international texting and data in more than 210 countries worldwide. International calls cost 25 cents per minute. Data is free, but your connection gets throttled when you exceed the daily allowance (unless you pay to upgrade).

This basic coverage is included by default in the Magenta and Magenta Plus service plans. If you participate in one of those plans, you don’t have to call to activate it. 

T-Mobile also allows subscribers to purchase an international data pass that upgrades them to high-speed data while they travel. This add-on is available as a one-day, 10-day or 30-day package.

How to turn on international services with AT&T

AT&T offers subscribers an international talk, text, and data pass that is good in more than 210 countries. It costs $10 per day to participate. Participation in this plan is not automatic, so you must turn it on by calling customer service.

International roaming would have allowed Mary to connect to the airport Wi-Fi and make calls to her family. Consumer Cellular’s International roaming charges range from 10 to 50 cents per minute for talk, text and data.

Consumer Cellular’s per-minute roaming costs can add up fast. Mary could also have considered getting a local SIM card or purchasing an eSIM code online if she needed to spend more time calling or surfing the internet during her layover.

Buy a SIM card at the airport

SIM stands for Subscriber Identity Module. It’s a small chip that connects your phone to a local provider’s network. Overseas, Mary’s regular SIM card was like a fish out of water. Purchasing a local SIM card would have allowed her to access nearby networks. 

All you need to do is remove the sim card in your phone and replace it with the new one. An international SIM card costs about $30, so if you get one, make sure you’ll use it enough to justify the expense.

Mary was only going to be in Germany for a short time, so buying a SIM card would have been a bit of a waste for her. It still would have been cheaper than a hotel, though.

Purchase an eSIM card online

Mary could also have purchased an eSIM card online if she had known about this in advance. When you buy an eSIM card, it works like a fast pass for the local cellular network.

You set it up before you leave, and it works as soon as you land. It will also keep your original SIM information intact and running in the background. This means that your regular phone number continues to work as usual.

Here are some of the top eSIM options for overseas travel:

• Google Fi – The Unlimited Plus plan costs $40 per line per month and includes coverage for overseas travel. Calls are still $0.20 per minute, but texts and data are free and unlimited. A flexible plan option includes free texts, 20 cents per minute calls and $10 per GB of data. 
• HolaFly – Setup is as easy as scanning a QR code. Country-specific plans cost $20 to $47 per month and include calls, texts and up to 500MB of data daily. 
• Tello – All Tello eSIM plans include free unlimited calling and texting to more than 60 countries globally with up to 5GB of data for around $20 per month. 

Make sure you plan, no matter which cell phone plan you use when traveling abroad. This saves you money and makes it easy to make calls once you get off the plane.

When Mary landed in Germany, it was too late for her to get things set up easily. She was in a tight spot, and her phone could not connect to the airport’s local Wi-Fi. There was no way to purchase an eSIM card online or look up the international customer service number for Consumer Cellular. 

You’ll want to take care of some other things before you travel. Try giving your credit card company a heads up and taking backup photos of your passport and other important documents, just in case.

Prerequisites include turning on Cellular Data Switching on the eSim , turning Wifi Calling on for your regular Sim and being with a provider that allows global Wifi Calling – in Canada this is limited to Rogers, Fido, and Freedom. Just as a note the Wifi Calling step allows the two Sims to converse with one another; it is not a limitation to Wifi Calling only.

Apparently the same capabilities exist for newer Android phones that support dual Sims but from what I’ve read the experience doesn’t seem to be quite as smooth as that for iPhone.

I was all geared up to try this method but then . . .

As an extreme alternative Freedom Mobile just introduced a couple of plans that include “free” international roaming in 81 countries. I just switched from Koodo to one of the Freedom plans: for exactly the same cost I lost 5 gigs of data per month (not a big deal to me) but I also lost $16/day roaming charges while in Europe .

Freedom has its critics for coverage and speed, but where I live I don’t have an issue with either.

Again, this may not be a viable option for most.

9 tech devices I always pack with me — and 1 that‘s changing my routine at home

Last year, I took 100 flights. This year, I’m on track to hit — or possibly even beat — that number.

As a frequent traveler, I’ve learned what it takes to be productive when on the go. Whether I’m creating content from the plane or writing stories from the hotel room or club lounge, I have a handful of tech accessories I always take with me. (There’s also one device that’s changing my workflow at home — more on that later.)

These devices have become such staples in my travel routine that they stay in my backpack, waiting for my next trip.

As you think about what to pack for your next trip, perhaps my tech packing list will provide some inspiration — whether you plan to work from anywhere or want to unplug and disconnect.

Apple AirTags

This one is an absolute no-brainer. If I’ve learned anything from how the pandemic has affected air travel , it’s to prepare for the unexpected. Unfortunately, this means there’s a greater likelihood of experiencing a delayed or missing bag situation.

Apple’s AirTags have become immensely popular as a checked bag tracker. However, I recently bought an additional four-pack to stick these coin-size devices into my backpack, carry-on bag and keychain. In fact, AirTags recently saved the day when I was forced to gate-check my carry-on bag on a small regional jet.

The flight ended up getting super delayed. I wanted to deplane in order to rebook on a different airline, but I didn’t have my bag. The gate agent asked if I knew which cargo compartment my bag was stored in. Thanks to AirTag and Apple’s Precision Finding feature, I could direct the ground staff to the precise location of my bag.

I eventually rebooked onto a different flight and arrived three hours earlier than the originally delayed flight — all thanks to the AirTag.

Apple iPhone 14

Though it’s almost time for Apple to unveil the next-generation iPhone (expected in the fall), I’m still a big fan of the tech giant’s latest smartphones .

I’ve personally been using Apple’s top-of-the-line iPhone 14 Pro Max for my everyday life and travels, but I recently tested the entry-level iPhone 14 and 14 Plus in the new yellow finish .

Not only have I warmed up to the bold new color, but I also believe that it could definitely make sense for travelers to save $200 and opt for the “standard,” non-Pro iPhones this year.

The larger 6.7-inch Plus model even packs the longest-ever battery life in an iPhone, so if you’re in the market for a new phone that’ll last throughout the travel day, this one is it.

Google Fi SIM card

Staying connected when I’m on the go is a must. While I can’t beat the convenience of roaming with my preferred home carrier (Verizon), I’m also not prepared to spend $10 a day on the company’s TravelPass when traveling internationally.

Enter Google Fi. This MVNO, or mobile virtual network operator, works at home with the T-Mobile network and allows you to roam abroad without any additional data fees. Also, thanks to iPhone support and the dual SIM feature , I can even receive phone calls and texts on my primary line without incurring the $10-a-day fee when roaming with Google Fi.

Apple AirPods Pro 2

I used to tote around Bose’s over-ear noise-canceling headphones on every trip, but that bulky package now collects dust in the back of my closet.

With the second-generation Apple AirPods Pro , I can zone out while in transit with earbuds that fit in my pocket. The active noise cancellation isn’t as strong as you’d find in over-ear headphones. However, you can’t beat the portability of AirPods.

Also, other recent improvements — such as precision finding, redesigned controls and a new adaptive transparency mode — combine to make these the best travel-friendly earbuds yet.

Retractable HDMI cable

I recently visited a hotel that had an HDMI port on the side of the dresser. I posted on Instagram and asked whether anyone actually totes around an HDMI cable on their trips, and I was surprised at how many people said they did. I’m now one of them.

When I travel with friends, this cable is the perfect way to connect my laptop to the TV so we can all watch our preferred content together. No more huddling around a small screen to enjoy Apple TV+, Amazon Prime, Hulu or any other service that you subscribe to.

I know some travelers prefer to pack an Amazon Fire Stick in their bags, but the HDMI cable means more flexibility to stream whatever content you want. You can also even use the hotel TV as an external monitor if necessary.

Epicka Universal Travel Adapter

Buy for $18.39 — the lowest price Amazon has offered in 30 days.

Even though it’s 2023, finding enough power outlets to charge my devices still poses a challenge in many cases.

I used to travel with a portable surge protector. However, I recently ditched it for an Epicka universal travel adapter. It works in more than 150 countries and offers one AC outlet, four USB-A ports and one fast-charging USB-C port.

This keeps all my devices charged with a single adapter and doesn’t take up valuable space in my bag.

Anker 537 Power Bank

Buy now for $69.99 and save 30% on the regular price ($99.99).

On some of my busiest travel days, I’ll go through at least three full battery cycles on my phone. That’s because I’m usually filming content on planes, in airports or at hotels. I then have to edit all the photos and 4K videos, which really hogs my iPhone battery.

Apple’s proprietary MagSafe Battery Pack is a good option, especially if you’re using one of the latest iPhones. However, I’m a big fan of Anker’s much more robust power banks; they can charge multiple devices, including laptops, a few times on a single charge.

Anker has a wide range of power banks to fit your budget, connectivity and battery needs. I’ve been happy with the 537 model. The 26,800mAh capacity is big enough for my needs, and it costs just about $100.

15-inch MacBook Air

Buy the 15-inch MacBook Air for $1,249.99 — a $50 savings from the MSRP.

Apple’s current laptop lineup couldn’t be better for travelers: It features three of the best all-around travel notebooks.

My absolute favorite — and current laptop of choice – is the brand-new 15-inch MacBook Air. It’s Apple’s first 15-inch Air notebook, and it boasts incredible performance and all-day battery life in an entirely new thin-and-light design. It simply doesn’t get better than this for travelers.

While I’m currently using the 15-inch Air, the tech giant also offers a smaller 13.6-inch model that includes many of the same specs — just in a more portable package. (Until Apple released the 15-inch model, I was exclusively using the smaller notebook during my travels.)

Better yet, these Airs are some of Apple’s most affordable laptops, making them the best all-around travel laptops.

That said, if your workflows require a bit more computing power, Apple offers the MacBook Pro featuring the M2 Pro and M2 Max chips . The Pro comes in two sizes (14.2 and 16.2 inches). The smaller one will likely be a hit with travelers looking for more power, additional connectivity ports and a higher-quality display without being too bulky or unwieldy.

Buy the 14-inch MacBook Pro for $1,799 — a rare 10% savings.

Though I’ve been using an Air religiously for nearly a year, the Pro’s performance upgrades are immediately noticeable, and it’s great that you don’t need to sacrifice any battery life to enjoy these improvements.

DJI Mini 3 drone

Buy now for $693.49 and save 24% on the regular price ($909).

Admittedly this isn’t for everyone, but I love packing a drone on my outdoor-focused vacations. You can use it to take unique shots, and you don’t need to be an expert to use DJI’s new Mini 3.

This drone has the broadest appeal, both for travelers and recreational users. It weighs less than 249 grams (or less than 8.8 ounces), and it’s pretty portable. Because the device is just shy of the Federal Aviation Administration’s 250-gram limit, you can fly it without prior registration.

This drone packs some serious pro-level chops into its small package: a 12-megapixel photo capability, 4K video, 51 minutes of flight time and up to a 10-kilometer (more than 6-mile) range for video transmission. It’s a small but mighty drone.

Bonus: Apple Studio Display

I remember walking out of the TPG office on one fateful afternoon in March 2020 with an external monitor for what I thought would be two weeks of working from home. Fast forward three years, and working remotely using an external monitor has become a staple of many jobs, mine included.

In fact, I recently upgraded my home-office setup with Apple’s new Studio Display . There’s been no turning back, especially thanks to the incredible 5K display quality.

The monitor is also the perfect docking station for any Apple laptop, making it an ideal setup for travelers who want to focus on work when they’re at home.

Connecting to the display requires just a single Thunderbolt cable. This connection charges your laptop, enables the display’s immersive studio-quality speakers and microphones, unlocks three additional high-powered USB-C ports and even uses the display’s built-in webcam. Using Dual SIM with an eSIM

An eSIM is a digital SIM that allows you to use a cellular plan from your carrier without having to use a physical nano-SIM. Learn how to set up and use Dual SIM. 1

How can you use Dual SIM?

Use one number for business and another number for personal calls.

Add a local data plan when you travel outside of the country or region.

Have separate voice and data plans.

Both your phone numbers can make and receive voice and FaceTime calls and send and receive messages using iMessage, SMS, and MMS. 2 Your iPhone can use one cellular data network at a time.

If you want to use 5G with Dual SIM on iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro, or iPhone 12 Pro Max, make sure that you have iOS 14.5 or later .

What you need

An iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, or later with iOS 12.1 or later

A wireless carrier that supports eSIM

To use two different carriers, your iPhone must be unlocked . Otherwise, both plans must be from the same carrier. If a CDMA carrier provides your first SIM, your second SIM won't support CDMA. Contact your carrier for more information.

If you have an enterprise or corporate cellular service plan, check with your company administrator to see if they support this feature.

Erase your eSIM

All iPhone models that support eSIM can have multiple eSIMs and use Dual SIM with two active SIMs at the same time.

You can use Dual SIM by using a physical SIM and an eSIM. iPhone 13 models and later also support two active eSIMs. iPhone models without a physical SIM tray support two active eSIMs.

Label your plans

After your second plan is activated, label your plans. For example, you can label one plan Business and the other plan Personal.

You'll use these labels when you choose which phone number to use for making or receiving calls and messages, to designate a number for cellular data, and to assign a number to your contacts so you know which number you will use.

If you change your mind later, you can change your labels by going to Settings, tapping either Cellular or Mobile Data, and then tapping the number whose label you want to change. Then tap Cellular Plan Label and select a new label or enter a custom label.

Set your default number

Choose a number to use when you call or send a message to someone who isn't in your Contacts app. Choose which cellular plans you want to use for iMessage and FaceTime. You can choose either or both numbers.

On this screen, choose a number to be your default, or you can choose which number is to be used only for cellular data. Your other number will be your default. If you want your iPhone to use cellular data from both plans, depending on coverage and availability, turn on Allow Cellular Data Switching.

Use two phone numbers for calls, messages, and data

Now that your iPhone is set up with two phone numbers, here's how to use them.

Let your iPhone remember which number to use

When you call one of your contacts, you don't need to choose which number to use every time. By default, your iPhone uses the same number that you used the last time you called that contact. If you haven't called that contact, your iPhone uses your default number. You can also specify which number to use for your calls with a contact. Follow these steps:

Tap the contact.

Tap Preferred Cellular Plan.

Tap the number you want to use with that contact.

Make and receive calls

You can make and receive phone calls with either phone number.

When you're on a call, if the carrier for your other phone number supports Wi-Fi calling, you can answer incoming calls on your other number. When you're on a call using a line that isn't your designated line for cellular data, you need to turn on Allow Cellular Data Switching to receive calls from your other line. If you ignore the call and you have voicemail set up with your carrier, you’ll get a missed-call notification and the call will go to voicemail. Check with your carrier for Wi-Fi calling availability and find out whether additional fees or data usage applies from your data provider.

If you're on a call and your other line shows No Service, either your carrier doesn't support Wi-Fi calling or you don't have Wi-Fi calling turned on. 3 It could also mean Allow Cellular Data Switching is not turned on. When you're on a call, an incoming call on your other phone number will go to voicemail if you set up voicemail with your carrier. 4 However, you won't get a missed-call notification from your secondary number. Call Waiting works for incoming calls on the same phone number. To avoid missing an important call, you can turn on call forwarding and forward all calls from one number to the other. Check with your carrier for availability and to find out whether additional fees apply.

Switch phone numbers for a call

You can switch phone numbers before you make a call. If you're calling someone in your Favorites list, follow these steps:

Tap the current phone number.

Tap your other number.

If you're using the keypad, follow these steps:

Enter the phone number.

Tap the phone number, near the top of the screen.

Tap the number you want to use.

Send messages with iMessage and SMS/MMS

You can use iMessage or SMS/MMS to send messages with either phone number. 5 You can choose a number to use before or after you start a conversation. Here's how.

Choose a number before you send an iMessage or SMS/MMS message

Open Messages.

Tap the New button, in the upper-right corner of the screen.

Enter your contact's name.

Switch numbers during a conversation

Tap the number you're using, near the top of the screen.

Choose the number you want to use instead.

The icons in the status bar at the top of the screen show the signal strength of your two carriers. Learn what the status icons mean .

You can see more status icons when you open Control Center .

When Carrier 1 is in use, the other line will show No Service.

The status bar shows that the device is connected to Wi-Fi and Carrier 2 is using Wi-Fi Calling.

With Allow Cellular Data Switching turned on, the status bar shows that Carrier 1 is using 5G, and Carrier 2 is using the cellular data of Carrier 1 and has Wi-Fi calling enabled.

One number at a time can use cellular data. To change which number uses cellular data, follow these steps:

Go to Settings.

Tap either Cellular or Mobile Data.

Tap Cellular Data.

Tap the number you want to use cellular data.

If you turn on Allow Cellular Data Switching, then while you're on a voice call on your voice-only number, that number automatically switches to use voice and data. 6 This lets you use both voice and data while on the call.

If you turn off Allow Cellular Data Switching and you're active on a voice number that isn't your designated cellular-data number, then cellular data won't work while you're on the call.

To turn on Allow Cellular Data Switching, follow these steps:

Tap Mobile Data.

Turn on Allow Cellular Data Switching.

To change your cellular settings for each of your plans, follow these steps:

Tap the number you want to change.

Tap each option and set it as you normally would.

Use Dual SIM with an eSIM and your Apple Watch .

If you can't set up your eSIM or if you have trouble using your eSIM, learn what to do .

eSIM on iPhone is not offered in China mainland. In Hong Kong and Macao, iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation), and iPhone XS feature eSIM. Learn about using Dual SIM with two nano-SIM cards in China mainland, Hong Kong, and Macao .

This uses Dual SIM Dual Standby (DSDS) technology, which means that both SIMs can make and receive calls.

Or if you're using iOS 12, update to iOS 13 or later to receive calls when you're using your other number.

4. If data roaming is on for the number that uses cellular data, then Visual Voicemail and MMS will be disabled on your voice-only number.

Additional fees might apply. Check with your carrier.

Your data line switches automatically for the duration of your call. This cellular-data switching won't work if you're currently using Data Roaming. Check with your carrier for availability and to find out if additional fees apply.
