The PGA Tour returns to Dallas for the 2021 Byron Nelson at TPC Craig Ranch

mm

  • May 13, 2021

It’s the middle of May and that means it’s Byron Nelson time in North Texas.  This year, the pros will be teeing it up at a new venue, TPC Craig Ranch in McKinney.  Coming just a week before the year’s second major championship, this year’s field is stacked with the world’s best.  These names include defending champion Sung Kang, Jordan Spieth, Brooks Koepka, Rickie Fowler, Sergio Garcia, Hideki Matsuyama, Bryson DeChambeau, Jon Rahm, Jason Day, Scottie Scheffler and Will Zalatoris.

After a lackluster event at Trinity Forest, the venue was moved way north to TPC Craig Ranch, where expectations are high.  The course itself is part of the TPC network and has a great reputation locally.  The course has highlighted its final three holes with viewing venues for the limited crowd allowed onto the grounds this week.  The PGA Tour remains on the forefront of returning fans to venues across the board (while adhering to COVID protocols, of course) and it has certainly brought the energy back to the game.  I think it’s safe to say that we all missed that energy.  Even the “BA BA BOOEY’s” have a strange endearing nature that I would never have expected.

TPC Craig Ranch will display its first four day tournament and expectations are high.  A venue that is set up properly to both defend itself and give the opportunity for dramatics is essential to keeping a tournament around for awhile.  I’m confident the players will come out of this impressed and looking forward to coming back again and again.  Long has the Nelson struggled for big names outside of the locals and this year serves as a true test to what North Texas can bring players across the board.  My expectations are high and I’m confident the course will hold up over four long May days.

The AT&T Byron Nelson is a premier PGA TOUR event, hosted by the Salesmanship Club of Dallas since 1968.  Byron Nelson himself was a legend of the game.  The Waxahachie native has an impressive 52 PGA Tour wins including five major championships.  Before his death in 2006, Nelson was a regularly attendee of the tournament and could be seen congratulating the winner on the 18th green.

Now that we’ve talked about the venue and how excited we are to see how things play out, let’s get to the players.

Like I mentioned above, this field is healthy.  A last minute DJ withdrawal didn’t feel like such a drastic loss when we have other top professionals making their way to McKinney.  But, as always, we will zone in on those whose hometown area codes resemble that of the 75070.

Jordan Spieth

Jon Rahm is the favorite at 8/1 but Dallas native Jordan Spieth sits firmly near the top of the list at 10/1.  Spieth is looking to keep his pursuit of the Texas Swing alive after securing his first victory in three years in San Antonio earlier this year.  Spieth hasn’t played since the Masters but his game has looked nothing less than stellar since the start of the 2021 campaign.  Next week marks the only major the kid hasn’t won so you know he’ll be looking for another solid week in the build up to the Ocean Course.

Recently, on the No Laying Up podcast, Spieth talked about his mental state and process.  As always, he was candid and in depth when talking about how he got through some tough years on the golf course.  It’s obvious at this point that you’ll never hear me speak ill of this dude and for good reason.  He’s one of the best in the world when he’s on his game and right now… he is.

Scottie Scheffler

Another Texas guy.  Literally, he went to UT.  Scottie is 22/1 to win this week and will certainly be a popular pick due to that value and his almost Spieth like vibes when it comes to fanfare in the Texas galleries.  The 24-year-old first played here at age 17, posting 60’s in 3/4 rounds and finishing for a tie for 22nd.  There’s plenty of big names to root for this week but the Byron has always been a place for first time winners and it wouldn’t surprise me if that first timer’s name is Scottie.  He’s got the game, the familiarity with the course and the staff and has been right on the cusp of breaking through.

Ryan Palmer

He’s from Texas, he’s a top player in the world, he’s got an awesome shoe game.  That’s reason enough to put him in your Daily Fantasy lineups.

Will Zalatoris

Is it me or is no one talking about this kid anymore?  He absolutely stole the headlines at the Masters after a charge no one expected.  He’s technically not on the PGA Tour but he damn well should be.  It’s a shame we’re going another week where the person who finished in the top 5 at the Masters is ineligible for FedEx Cup Points but what can you do?

Bryson DeChambeau

Bryson hit ball far.  Bryson yell at himself.  Bryson scared of ants.

The Bryon should be an interesting even this year.  A new venue, some weather threats and a stacked field has me more excited than ever to tune into the event.  It’s wild that it’s already May and we’re talking Byron but here we are.  So strap in and watch the world’s best figure out how to tear this North Dallas course to shreds.

mm

There are two things I love more than anything - golf and hockey. Well, also the NFL... and the NBA...who am I kidding. I just love sports.

Dallas’ Harrison Frazar wins first PGA Tour Champions title in a playoff

RICHMOND, Va. — Harrison Frazar won his first PGA Tour Champions title Sunday when he birdied the 18th hole for a 3-under 69 to force a playoff with Richard Green, and then made an 8-foot birdie on the first extra hole at the Dominion Energy Charity Classic.

Frazar, a Highland Park and University of Texas alum , wasn’t the only winner. Steve Stricker clinched his first Charles Schwab Cup title with two postseason events still to be played, even though he skipped the tournament.

Green also closed with a 69, helped by a 10-foot par putt on the 15th and an 8-foot birdie putt on the 16th hole. But he failed to birdie the 516-yard closing hole at the Country Club of Richmond, opening the door for Frazar and Brett Quigley in the final group.

Quigley birdied the 16th and 17th, and he had a 10-foot birdie putt on the final hole that he left inches short for a 71 to finish alone in third, one shot behind.

Frazar didn’t make his first birdie until the 11th hole, but he hit a superb wedge from 75 yards to short range for birdie on the 16th, and he two-putted for birdie from 40 feet on the 18th.

Frazar and Green finished at 11-under 205.

Returning to the 18th for the playoff, both players missed the fairway. Green whiffed on his fairway metal, but it caromed out of the trees into the fairway and he hit his third to 30 feet. Frazar cleared the cross bunkers, and his long pitch spun back to 8 feet below the hole.

He clenched his fist when he saw it drop for birdie. His first PGA Tour Champions victory came 12 years after his lone win on the PGA Tour at the St. Jude Classic.

“Emotions are all-time high right now,” Frazar said. “I’m so happy and so proud at what I’ve done. This means a bunch. You wonder if you can really do it. You wonder if you’ve still got it. To see that putt go in the hole, gosh, what a feeling.”

Stricker has been so dominant on the PGA Tour Champions, winning six times and three majors, that he built a lead of just under $2 million going into the Charles Schwab Cup playoffs.

With only 1,756,000 points available over the last two events, Stricker leads Steven Alker by 1,909,065. Stricker plans to play at least one of the next two events.

The top 54 players in the Schwab Cup standings advance to the next playoff event in two weeks. Four players moved into the top 54 on Sunday — Shane Bertsch, John Huston, Rocco Mediate and Charlie Wi.

Four pro golfers, one house: welcome to 'the dirty meadow', share this article.

It’s not long after you walk in “The Dirty Meadow” – more on that later – that you realize it’s a golf-friendly house. Maybe 5-10 seconds.

“The hitting net in the living room now is a dead giveaway,” said Charlie Saxon.

The house in Dallas on Clover Meadow (hence the name, and because, why not?) is home to Saxon and his former Oklahoma Sooner teammates Max McGreevy and Grant Hirschman, as well as former Texas standout Scottie Scheffler. Former Drake University players Will McDonald and Drew Ison also live there.

With Scheffler on the PGA Tour and Saxon, McGreevy and Hirschman on the Korn Ferry Tour, the Dirty Meadow just might be the most talented golf house in America.

[jwplayer 2uCpGo4I-9JtFt04J]

Scheffler led last season’s Korn Ferry Tour Finals points list and the overall season points list, earning his PGA Tour card for the 2020 season and 2019 Korn Ferry Tour Player of the Year honors. Saxon played his senior year at Oklahoma with McGreevy and Hirschman in 2014-15. The latter two went on to win the NCAA Championship with the Sooners in 2017.

The Dirty Meadow

So why Dallas? Depends who you ask.

Scheffler says it’s because the Sooners just couldn’t handle Oklahoma anymore. The Oklahoma boys disagree. Dallas is a bit warmer in the winter, and flying out of Oklahoma City meant a lot of connections through Dallas anyway.

dallas pga tour

It all started when Scheffler and Hirschman graduated in 2018. The two had talked about moving to Dallas for a couple months. As Hirschman remembers, Scheffler didn’t respond for four months (if you ask Scheffler, Hirschman forgot about him and only texted him once).

Hirschman then reached out to Saxon and McGreevy, as well as McDonald and Ison. With half the group on the road playing golf, McGreevy and Ison did most of the house hunting. Scheffler got back in the picture and the house was theirs on May 1, 2019. It wasn’t until late last fall that the entire group was together under one roof. Even then Scheffler was still gone a lot on Tour. The group doesn’t even have a picture of the four of them all together.

Six people in one house can be a lot to handle, not to mention six fiercely-competitive professionals all in their 20s. That said, the group doesn’t get in many big fights, just small minute-long spats where they soon end up laughing.

McGreevy said the most difficult part of being quarantined together is they don’t really have a getaway, other than the golf course. In fact, they’re even worse when they’re together at the course.

“Most of our arguments occur when the four of us go play,” explained Hirschman. “We play so slow because we sit there and argue on the green and then we argue on the tee box and before we know it we’re holding up the entire golf course and we’re most likely the four best players on the golf course.”

The house agreed Scheffler was the one who talks the most trash on the course, with McGreevy adding “he’s probably made four birdies in a row, so it’s okay, but he likes to dig.”

Off the course, the guys are just as competitive. During their time in quarantine they’ve started playing board games. One game in particular, Sequence , gets rather heated. Especially with a little action. They might be professional athletes, but the pot isn’t anything Michael Jordan Last Dance -esque.

“That doesn’t fit the Korn Ferry Tour salary,” joked Saxon.

Life together on tour

While the comment was made in jest, it’s true at the same time. The life of a professional athlete isn’t always a glamorous one, especially for a young golfer trying to make his way up the ranks. It’s normally a long season on the Korn Ferry Tour, traveling week after week with less-than-stellar accommodations to small cities across the country, rarely getting to be home.

“It’s been nice to be at home, and even though being on the road is difficult at times, we all love it,” said Saxon. “We love the competition and the grind and I know we’re all missing it.”

Drew Ison caddying for Max McGreevy at the 2019 Macau Championship on the PGA Tour Series – China.

“The biggest benefit is just picking each other’s brains,” explained Hirschman. “We’ve all been through quite a bit and had our own personal experiences with golf and we can learn a lot from each other.”

“On the road if you’re struggling it’s good to have buddies to bounce thoughts and feelings off of,” added Saxon.

2024 NFL Combine: Quinyon Mitchell, Dallas Turner among biggest winners and losers

The 2024 nfl draft is less than two months away..

gettyimages-2051331802-1.jpg

The NFL Combine ended with the offensive linemen and specialists on the field Sunday. Reflecting back on the week in Indianapolis, here are some of the biggest winners and losers as it relates to their 2024 NFL Draft fate:

OT Troy Fautanu, Washington

Fautanu played left tackle for the Huskies but some project him as an interior player at the next level. Those that had concerns about his ability to hold up on the outside were likely proven wrong on Sunday. He moved incredibly well on the field but also tested well. His 5.01 seconds 40-yard dash suggests that he can run the arc with some of the league's quicker pass rushers. His arm length was 34.5 inches so that allows him to get into the defender's pads and dictate action at the point of attack.

DT Braden Fiske, Florida State

Few have won the pre-draft process the way the Western Michigan transfer has this year. Fiske was a disruptive talent at the Senior Bowl in January. At nearly 300 pounds, he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.78 seconds and was a standout in every other metric as well. When it came time to go through the on-field drills, Fiske was incredibly nimble over the bags.

The defensive line group had a strong showing as Clemson's Ruke Orhorhoro and Texas' Byron Murphy II also tested really well.

OT Taliese Fuaga, Oregon State

Joe Alt or Olu Fashanu: that was the conversation for most in media when discussing which tackle will come off the board first. Fuaga's performance is going to change that moving forward. He may not be the first taken but he deserves to be mentioned alongside his peers.

The offensive tackles, in general, lived up to the hype. Georgia's Amarius Mims certainly looked the part of an NFL tackle while Notre Dame's Alt had one of the better testing days. Alabama's JC Latham did not participate in athletic testing, but he won the measurements.

WR Adonai Mitchell, Texas

Mitchell ran .13 seconds slower than his Texas teammate, Xavier Worthy, but also weighed 40 pounds more. At 6-foot-2, the one-time Georgia transfer had a 39.5 inch vertical jump and an 11-feet-4-inch broad jump. His size and athletic profile are that of a top flight pass catcher in the NFL, which will likely catapult him into the first round.

CB Quinyon Mitchell, Toledo

Mitchell has 'A's' across his report card over the past few months. He recorded six interceptions in his final two seasons with the Rockets. He has shown the speed to carry routes vertically but can also transition across the field and trigger quickly downfield in run support. Mitchell singed the turf of Lucas Oil Stadium running a 4.33 second 40-yard dash and jumped out of the stadium.

EDGE Dallas Turner, Alabama

Turner had Pterodactyl arms (34 3/8 inches) with a 4.46 seconds 40-yard dash and a 40.5 inch vertical jump. As a former five-star recruit, it was known that the Fort Lauderdale native had immense athletic ability but receiving that validation after just turning 21-years-old will be tantalizing for teams.

EDGE Jared Verse, Florida State

Verse ended the season on a high note recording 4.5 sacks over the final two games. He consistently won with power as a Seminole but took his game up a notch towards the end. Verse tested like a player that does not have to rely solely on strength and power to win at the next level though. The Albany transfer had a 4.58 seconds 40-yard dash with a 35-inch vertical jump and a 10-feet-7-inch broad jump.

EDGE Austin Booker, Kansas

Booker was one of my favorite sleeper prospects coming into the week. He weighed in at 240 pounds, which was lower than the film suggested. If he had dropped weight and ran a fast 40-yard dash, then it would have been understandable, but his 4.79 seconds was not impressive.

RB Audric Estime, Notre Dame

Estime had the slowest 40-yard dash time (4.71 seconds) among the running backs and wide receivers. It would be the third slowest among tight ends. His vertical and broad jumps were solid to good but, if he were to go on to have a long NFL career, then he will be an outlier as far as 40-yard dash times are concerned.

CB Kool-Aid McKinstry, Alabama

McKinstry was unable to participate as he deals with an injury. Alabama's Terrion Arnold and Mitchell had strong days, while Clemson cornerback Nate Wiggins ran the 40-yard dash in 4.28 seconds before bowing out prematurely due to an injury. McKinstry needs a sub 4.5 second 40-yard dash to really keep his stock towards the top of the cornerback class as others have surged up the board.

Ross held the 40-yard dash record time (4.22 seconds) for seven years but it finally fell Saturday with Texas wide receiver Xavier Worthy running the event in 4.21 seconds. At the time of Ross' run, East Carolina running back Chris Johnson had held the record (4.24 seconds) for nine years.

Ross would go on to become the No. 9 overall selection in the 2017 NFL Draft.

The 2024  NFL Draft  will take place from April 25-27 in Detroit. More draft coverage can be found at CBSSports.com, including the weekly  updated draft order ,  mock drafts  and a regularly available  look at the eligible prospects .

PGA TOUR Americas has announced the dates and sites of the six qualifying tournaments to be contested this spring after the Latin America Swing and before the North America Swing. Players advancing from these qualifying tournaments will earn PGA TOUR Americas eligibility for the North America Swing, starting with The Beachlands Victoria Open presented by Times Colonist (June 20-23).

Each qualifying tournament will be 72 holes of stroke play, with the low 25 qualifiers and any player tied for 25th place earning PGA TOUR Americas membership. A maximum of 132 players will compete at each of the six sites.

  • Finishers 1-9 from each site will be exempt for the North America Swing of the 2024 PGA TOUR Americas season and will not be subject to any reshuffles. In the event of a tie for the ninth position, there will be a hole-by-hole playoff immediately following play.
  • Finishers 10-25 and any player tied for 25th place from each site will receive conditional status for the North America Swing of the 2024 PGA TOUR Americas season. These players will be eligible for the reshuffles, which will occur after the completion of the fourth and seventh events of the North America Swing.

Registration for the six qualifying tournaments will open on March 26. For more information about PGA TOUR Americas qualifying tournaments, visit this website .
