National government to do ₱6.97-T projects under TRIP program–Neda
- Cai U. Ordinario
- March 18, 2024
- 2 minute read
THE national government is set to undertake P6.97 trillion worth of infrastructure projects under its Three-year Rolling Investment Program (TRIP), according to the National Economic and Development Authority (Neda).
Documents obtained by BusinessMirror show the TRIP, which was recently approved by the Neda Board Interagency Committee on Infrastructure (Infracom), is set to finance 2,762 projects and programs (PAPs) between 2025 and 2027.
For 2025, the amount to be spent is P2.57 trillion, the largest in the program, followed by 2026 at P2.36 trillion and 2027 at P2.04 trillion.
“The TRIP was approved by the Neda Board Committee on Infrastructure [Infracom] during its March 12, 2024 Special Meeting for subsequent submission to DBM as input for the FY 2025 Budget Preparation,” Neda said in a brief sent to BusinessMirror .
Trip’s Tier 1 projects, which include 393 ongoing projects, accounts for the bulk of the amount at P5.57 trillion. This is broken down to P2.05 trillion in 2025; P1.88 trillion in 2026; and P1.65 trillion in 2027.
For Tier 2, which includes 2,369 new or expanded projects, amounts to P1.39 trillion. This is broken down into P518.42 million in 2025; P479.73 million in 2026; and P391.91 million in 2027.
The Neda also said transportation remained the infrastructure sector with the highest investment between 2025 and 2027. The total allocation of the sector amounts to P3.87 billion or 55.55 percent.
Given this, in terms of agency, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) accounts for 30.79 percent of the amount allocated for transportation in the next three years.
This is followed by the Department of Transportation (DOTr) at 20.81 percent of the total and other transport agencies at 3.95 percent.
“These include transport-related projects of DA [i.e., farm to market roads], Ceza, Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority [SBMA], Zamboanga City Special Economic Zone Authority [ZCSEZA], among others,” Neda said.
Apart from transportation, Neda said TRIP covers projects for the water infrastructure sector, accounting for P1.31 trillion or 18.78 percent of the total in the next three years.
This is followed by social infrastructure at P1.28 trillion or 18.37 percent of the total; other social infrastructure projects, 4.2 percent; information communications technology, 2.09 percent; and power, 1.02 percent.
Meanwhile, Neda said the investment requirements between 2025 and 2027 of most PAPs or P4.82 trillion—or 69.25 percent of the total—must be financed through local funds.
This is followed by Official Development Assistance (ODA) amounting to P1.3 trillion or 18.61 percent of the total and Public Private Partnerships, P839.33 billion or 12.05 percent of the total.
Neda said financing from other sources will also be sought for 0.09 percent of the total.
The oversight agency said the TRIP is a key feature of the budgetary reform used to synchronize and tighten the link between planning and budgeting of all infrastructure PAPs of the government.
It will also be used to build the pipeline of strategic and other infrastructure projects needed to sustain inclusive economic growth.
Neda issued the Call for the submission of priority PAPs in the Public Investment Program (PIP) and TRIP as input to the FY 2025 budget preparation through a October 13, 2023 Memorandum signed by the Socioeconomic Planning Secretary.

Hiking Neda Waterfalls in the Peloponnese
One of my favorite things to do in Greece is river trekking and one of the best ones is hiking Neda waterfalls in the Peloponnese.
Neda River marks the border between the prefectures of Ilia and Messinia in the Peloponnese and is a hidden natural treasure in western Greece. The river originates from the southern slope of Lykaion Mt where the Sanctuaries of Zeus and Pan lie. Neda River crosses an impressive 32 km long gorge with forests, narrow passages, and numerous points with waterfalls where small natural lakes with crystal clear water are formed.
I find this trekking so exciting not only because you end up in a magical, totally unspoiled area with turquoise waters but also because you get to visit some impressive sites in the area, such as:
- UNESCO Temple of Apollo Epicurious
- UNESCO Ancient Olympia
- The Nemouta Waterfalls
- The beautiful sandy 70 km beach of Kaiafas and its lake with the spa
- The picturesque mountainous village of Andritsena
Tip: According to Greek mythology, Neda was a nymph, a goddess of water, and nourished Zeus.
Tip for Ancient Olympia : The best Hotel in Olympia, with an outdoor pool and rich buffet breakfast, is Hotel Europa Olympia .

Trekking Neda River
Technical information.
- Waterfall Height : 20 m
- Trail: Easy
- Best time to hike : During warm weather, May-October
- Ideal Trek for Families with children over 12 years old
- Good physical condition with some basic hiking experience
You can easily access the initial waterfalls by passing through Platanias village. As you approach the entrance of Platanias, just around a bend, you’ll notice road signs pointing towards Neda’s waterfalls, the Temple of Epicurious Apollo, and Barbalekou Tower. This tower, a stone structure, provides splendid panoramic views of the area and is a convenient stop on your route to the waterfalls.
The road from the village gradually descends into a dirt road, stretching for approximately 5 kilometers. This dirt road is suitable for any type of vehicle and leads to a stone bridge connecting both sides of the river. There’s a designated parking area at the end of the road where you can safely leave your vehicle. Once parked, you’ll encounter a small stone bridge that connects the two riverbanks.
Starting from Platania village, you’ll follow the 4 km downhill trail, and your initial destination is the wooden bridge with a small emerald pool, just a few meters before reaching the impressive 20-meter-high Neda Waterfall. As you descend toward the first waterfall and pool, you’ll encounter the remains of ancient ruins scattered throughout the area. Along the way to the waterfalls, you’ll also discover a quaint chapel with a flickering candle inside.
The trail continues and leads (20 min) to the right to the large, impressive waterfall that you see in most photos of Neda, and straight to the chapel of Panagia.
Gear for Hiking Neda Waterfalls
These are some of the essential items I recommend you have with you if you are hiking to Greece in summer:
- Hiking shoes
- Hiking clothes (fast dry)
- Organic sunscreen to apply as often as possible
- UPF sun hat for all day out
- White linen shirt to cover up if you get very easily sunburnt
- Good sunglasses
- Hiking backpack with good dry back protection
- Personal bottle of water (1-2 lt)
- Towel & Swimwear or shorts
- Change of dry clothes (to change after river trekking)
- A spare pair of shoes that will get wet. Suitable are hiking shoes or trainers (Sandals, or flip-flops are a very bad idea 😀 )
Canyoning Neda Waterfalls in Peloponnese
- Trek Length: For those who wish to explore a larger part of the Neda River, be prepared for a 7 km journey that can take up to 6 hours.
- Difficulty Warning: Please note that certain sections of the route are quite challenging and not recommended for families or individuals with limited hiking or canyoning experience. You will have to:
- swim in cold water
- stay up as the current is strong at times
- you may need to wear half or full-body wet suits suitable for canyoning depending on the water temperature
- wear a helmet to protect you from rock falls and carry a dry bag to protect your belongings from the water
- cross narrow passages through the river
- Swimming in Natural Caves: One of the thrilling experiences on this trek is swimming in a dark natural cave-mouth.
- Guided Trekking: I highly recommend organizing this trek with a group, a knowledgeable guide, and the proper equipment. You should protect yourself from water, insects, and the sun.
- Hiking Apparel: Consider wearing a good hiking blouse like the Under Armour Women’s Tech V-Neck .
- Footwear: Ensure you have sturdy, reliable footwear (like this Salomon pair ) and maintain your balance to prevent slipping and being carried away by the river’s current.
- Let Us Organize Your Trek: If you prefer a hassle-free experience, we can help organize your Neda trek for you. Simply send us an email with the details, including the trip time and the size of your group.
How to Get to Neda Waterfalls
It is a 3.30-4 hour trip by car from Athens (254 km), so you may want to do this as a 2day trip or include it in your itinerary for South Peloponnese. You will need a private car to get to the area, either from Ilia near Figalia and Temple of Apollo Epicurious or from Messinia near the villages of Sidirokastro, Avlona, and Platanias. Either way crosses green hillsides with olive, fig, plane, and wild oaks, a really scenic drive.
Is it safe to visit Neda Waterfalls with children?
While visiting Neda Waterfalls with children over 12 years old can be an enjoyable experience, it’s essential to supervise them closely, especially near the water, as some areas can be slippery.
My Favorite Canyon Trekking Tours in Greece
This is a short list of some of my favorite rivers, canyons, and gorge trekking in the Peloponnese and Greece in general:
Other exciting trails in the area are the: Polylimnio Waterfalls, Nemouta Waterfalls, Voidokoilia Beach , and hike to the Temple of Apollo Epicurious. And since you will be in the area, a visit to Ancient Olympia is a must!
Where to Stay near Neda Waterfalls
If you are seeking a top-tier hotel, then Westin Resort, Costa Navarino. is your best choice.
For more modest accommodation, I would stay at the Kasimis Hotel (budget, family, and pet-friendly) near the seaside town of Kyparissia. If you would like to experience a mountainous village, I have stayed at Archontiko , an 1865 stone-built mansion with a fireplace, and had a wonderful time!
What are the Most Popular Hikes in Greece?
Hiking in Greece offers a diverse and captivating experience, thanks to the country’s versatile terrain. From the rugged mountains of the Pindus range and Vikos Gorge to the north to the Menalon Trail in the Peloponnese to the coastal trails overlooking the Aegean and Ionian Seas, Greece is the hiker’s paradise.
The country boasts well-maintained paths that wind through ancient olive groves, dense forests, churches, monasteries, ancient ruins, rivers and charming villages, providing hikers with a unique blend of natural beauty and cultural richness.

We are a family of 4 with two young children and none of us had ever kayaked before. George went out of his way to make us feel comfortable and teach us the techniques of kayaking. The views were phenomenal and the sea water so clear and beautiful. George knows so much about the land and history which made the trip all the more interesting. He took us into a cave which was spectacular. We also enjoyed a delicious picnic lunch in a small bay. I could not recommend this trip more highly! Read more Written April 12, 2024

This tour was a highlight of our stay in Greece - if you're in doubt, this is your message to book this tour and get a unique view of the Mani peninsula's wild coast and caves from your Kayak! Together they lead us in a group of around 10 people from the Harbor of Kardamyli to see the wild coast and venture in some of the caves, including swimming in the blue cave nearby, which was a one in a lifetime experience for us. The care they took to make everyone feel welcome, comfortable, heard and have fun were truly unrivalled. Georgios gave plenty of historical and mythical context to everything we have seen and shared his pride of the Mani peninsula. The cherry on top was an extremely homely picnic on the beach featuring hand cut vegetables, local cheese and oil. Thank you so much for your expertise and kindness! Read more Written April 3, 2024

We saw such a variety of terrain--a large flock of flamingos in the lagoon, sweeping sea views from hilltops, as well as hundreds' years old olive groves. Fotis, the guide, planned the route, so he knows it very well. He's an experienced cyclist, and is very easygoing and made the experience feel comfortable and welcoming. You should note that the biking is somewhat challenging, especially near the start of the ride, which is off-road. The e-bikes were top notch, so it's not a matter of strength so much as feeling confident navigating loose gravel and some steeper grades. That being said, we were the first customers, so it's possible the route will change. Also--forgot to mention--a really nice small waterfall where you can swim in nice weather. (You might want to wear your swimsuit, tho, as there's no facilities for changing.) Read more Written March 28, 2024

This is a great day activity also for people who are not well experienced with kayaking. The guide - Fotis - was wonderful; he explained everything very clearly at the beginning and set up a fantastic itinerary. We travelled for 8 1/2 Km along the coast, with breaks to see sites and some sea caves. Stopped for lunch and explored another underground cave and had a delicious picnic on the beach. He talked very eloquently about everything we saw and had boundless energy. It was a pleasure to spend the day with him. Then ready to head back to the port after about 4 hours. If you are exploring the area of Kardamyli, this is a unique way to look at the coast from the sea and get a very different perspective. It is a fun activity and not too strenuous. River Trekking in Neda provided by Explore Messinia
Neda Waterfalls Best Hidden Gem of Greece
Neda waterfall was a long-time dream. This gorge is one of the most popular ones in South Peloponnese.
We have been many times in Peloponnese. Did lots of gorges too!
Yet, for some weird reason, in all our trips, we didn’t do the Neda Waterfalls hiking route until this summer.
It was an engaging and enjoyable experience.
Getting there was like the travels of Ulysses and the poem of Greek poet Kavafis. Both show the importance of enjoying the trip before the final destination.
Table of Contents
What to know for Neda Waterfalls & Neda River?
It is a 3.30-4 hour trip by car from Athens, so you may want to do this a 2day trip or include it in your itinerary for South Peloponnese.
The gorge that hosts the river of Neda is located in Peloponnese at the borders of Ilia and Messinia Prefectures.
The river comes down from the Mountain Liceo and flows into the Ionian sea between Kyparissia and Zaharo.
Both these areas are famous for their beaches.
We made a different gorge walking and waterfalls route when we were in these areas. We hiked through the famous Nemouta Waterfalls , and on our way back, we visited Ancient Olympia .
Anyway, the length of the Neda river is 32km. We did 7 of them. It took 6 hours for the team to complete.
The river is booming with a luscious plantation, and significant parts of it are under shade due to the gorge walls.
The biggest of the waterfalls we visited (near Figaleia) is 50mt tall.
Many practice their canyoneering skills here too.
Neda Waterfalls and Gates of Hades?
The river was named after a nymph called Neda. Near this place, you can also visit the Temple of Epicure Apollo Vassae.
Neda was a water deity, a nymph entrusted to take care of Zeus by Rhea to save him from being devoured by Cronus.
Note: Neda is a female name in Greek. The river of Neda is one of the two streams of Greece with a female name. The other one is the river of Arapitsa near Naoussa (North Greece). Most rivers in Greece come with a male name.
Did you know that one of the Gates to Hell was in Neda? If you don’t know who Hades was, read this .
Gorge Walking: Neda River and Neda Waterfalls
We got up early to meet the group from Active Sundays that would take us there.
It would be a single-day trip, and as such, we prefer not to drive ourselves back and forth, primarily when complex hiking/trekking occurs.
Our hiking took place in July, and the river was still with lots of water. It was tough to cross at some points, and you had to swim.
The current was strong at many points (and an excellent photo opportunity).
We had some excellent guides, and the whole adventure was hilarious.
Some points seemed impossible to cross, but the only thing we had to do was let go.
We have done canyoneering a few times in the past, so we had experiences from controlled sliding.
Many tricky points seemed easy, but the moment you tried to cross vertically, you felt the strong current despite the low water depth.
Good shoes (and balance) kept us from falling flat down and get carried away from the river.
Is Neda river a simple gorge walking thing? Not at all.
You need to have some experience with such treks and proper gear.
And after all that spectacular route, the 50mt high waterfall.
Necessary Gear for Neda Waterfalls Safety
Gorge walking is not canyoneering, but that doesn’t mean you can go in your sports shoes or sandals.
Here is the gear we had with us. No ropes were needed since the first 7km didn’t involve crossing points where climbing (up or down) was necessary.
Avoid cotton on such trips at all costs. It soaks and stays like that “forever.”
Many think that going naked from the waist up is beautiful in summer in a gorge/canyon. They believe they will enjoy the warm sun on their skin, getting cold from the river waters.
That is far from the truth.
It would be best if you had an excellent technical blouse (not necessarily with long sleeves) to protect you from the sun, possibly insects, and water. You may need to wear half or full body wet-suits suitable for canyoning depending on the water temperature.
In our case, a short sleeves blouse was delicate. However, the water was cold and not warm. Not cold, but around 12-14 Celsius. In a roaring river, under the shade, that will get colder.
Yes, your blouse will get wet almost immediately, but it will keep you warmer than wearing nothing.
Any lightweight technical running or hiking blouse will do. I prefer one with UV protection.
Pants & Swimsuits
We hiked in our swim shorts. Some were wearing hiking shorts. We tend to avoid such as no matter how light they are; they remain heavier than a swim short.
Shoes & Socks
This is one of the significant must-have ingredients for safety, along with a helmet. You must not wear -at all costs- any regular hiking/trekking shoes/boots.
It would be best if you had either the special canyoning shoes or the amphibious water shoes that allow water to pass through .
These were our shoes (Salomon).
Any other sports shoe will put you at high risk for injuries to massive traumas.
Talking about water shoes, we don’t mean beach shoes.
Beach shoes may be cheap, but they will get damaged in the 1st hour of your river walking as you walk inside the water and step on rocks.
You need good water shoes with excellent gripping. They are like trekking shoes but allow water to get through (means: less resistance to running river water) and grip fine on rocks.
Sports shoes will not be steady, and they may dissolve after 4-5 hours in the water, leaving you without shoes in a gorge. You don’t want that.
Do not wear your water shoes without socks. After X hours in the water, your feet will get soft from all that as they get softer; any seams will scratch your feet and create wounds that will get bigger by getting soaked in water.
A small pebble falling from a high altitude can seriously injure you or even kill you. A special helmet can prevent this as it protects your head.
Even if such rock lands on the rest of your body, you need to protect your head, getting beyond repair.
This range of helmets will do the job .
Do not use a regular backpack or plastic bags to keep your wallet, keys, towel, or/and snacks dry. You need a unique dry bag made from durable PVC that is for that reason.
Such bags fold on top and secure accordingly.
They allow no water at all to come through. We got a 10lt one for 15 euros from Oztrail , and it was great. They come in different capacities.
Such bags become floating devices, too, as they can trap air inside them when you fold them.
This is handy when you need to swim at different points.
Waterproof Camera
Smartphones won’t do the job unless you carry them in an actual waterproof pouch that is transparent enough to take photos.
We prefer to use a small waterproof camera (Panasonic Lumix) and have control over the outcome.
We left our smartphones in the car.
There was no signal in the gorge anyway, and team captains had high-quality communication radios to coordinate the team.
Make sure you have everything strapped on you as you will need your hands for many things. In case of emergency, you need to let your camera go & not lose it.
No matter the shade and gorge plantation, the sun will be hot in the summertime.
Apply sun cream to all non-covered areas. In case you make a short break for snacks and get dry, apply again.
Overall feelings from Neda Waterfalls
The top list for travelers in Greece is also to visit Nemouta Waterfalls and Panta Vrehei canyon & waterfalls.
Neda has an entirely different beauty when compared to the above. Not better or worst, just different, with quite different “energy.”
Who knows? Next time we may see Hades chasing up Persephone, running wild outside the Gates!

A Canyoning Trip, with lunch, at the natural wonder of Neda Gorge, perfect for beginners.
Description.
Neda Gorge is a hidden gem of the Peloponnese. According to Greek mythology, Neda was a nymph, a goddess of water and she was one of those who nourished Zeus. Beautiful creeks create stunning waterfalls along the gorge course with incredible waters, maybe the cleanest in Greece. Moreover, the lush environment, the crystal-clear waters, and the majestic cliffs make the crossing of this natural waterpark an unforgettable experience. Canyoning Neda trip here is the ideal way to take your first steps and get addicted to the magic world of canyoning. Frequently Asked Questions
What if i’ve never gone canyoning before.
Most of our customers are first-timers. Neda Canyoning trip is easy to catch up and beginners can complete a decent journey on their first-time canyoning trip. Our experienced guides will take you through the basic skills so you have the knowledge and adequate capability to enjoy a day at the gorge./p>
What will be the pace?
All of our trips are about journeying. We walk at a relaxed pace, moreover, we learn on the move and enjoy the river and the gorge. If you are a group of experienced canyoners wanting to complete a demanding journey then a private trip would be the best option.
What should I wear?
We suggest wearing clothes that you don’t mind getting a bit wet. Swimwear is essential if you wish to swim, a quick dry t-shirt, hat, sunglasses, shorts. Sandals, open shoes and socks are not safe as they tend to get soggy. Hiking shoes or trainers are fine. A lightweight polypropylene or fleece layer should be included in early spring and late fall tours. We provide wetsuits as well as dry bags where you can store your phone or some other personal belongings.
Who are the people that will guide us?
Professional local canyoning guides with a great knowledge of the area and the natural environment.
Is this Canyoning trip suitable for families with kids?
Absolutely Yes! A family canyoning tour is fun, educational, stimulating, and surprisingly relaxing for parents who wish to have their kids engaged on the experience exploring the natural environment and the outdoors in a safe and controlled way.
What is the minimum age for a kid to join this canyoning trip?
Kids from 10 years old may join a standard group trip or a private trip. We always walk with kids at a relaxed pace giving them the opportunity to learn and have fun.
What kind of fitness level do I need to take part?
You don’t need to be a strong, athletic person. Good general physical condition will be just fine. Keep in mind that the most important thing is to have fun and to enjoy the journey. We’ll take plenty of breaks and walk at an achievable pace.
What is the size of a group?
From 2 participants up to 16 people on our standard group trips. Most of our groups consist of couples, families, and individuals. We can also cater to smaller groups on private trips.
What trip is best suited for me, how do I choose?
All of our trips are designed to be suitable for everybody. Each one has its own unique characteristics. Best way to choose a trip among others is to check which one departs closer from the place you are staying.
Do you offer private trips?
Yes, we can organize a private tour, standard or tailor made, just for you, your family or your friends.
Should I book a standard trip or a private trip?
If you are happy to paddle with a mixed group or don’t want to spend more money then, booking a standard group trip is the best way to go. Private trips really work best with groups of experienced paddlers or groups of friends who want to do the trip slightly different, would like to do a more advanced journey or just want to have privacy and enjoy the trip just themselves.
Is lunch provided?
Yes, simple, nutritious and flavorsome, the food is one of the pleasures during our trips. Halfway we make a relaxing stop at a nice place to taste a home made picnic with freshly baked bread, organic garden-grown fruits and vegetables, homemade olive oil, and cheese.
What route will we take?
We usually perform our tours within a certain route aiming to visit the most beautiful spots each trip has to offer however; your guide is likely to choose an alternative route that suits the conditions on the day and the experience and needs of the group. This is the safest and best way to operate hiking trips.
Where do I park my car?
You can park your vehicle safely and for free near our meeting point. Feel free to ask us about parking condition for a specific trip.
What happens if the weather is unsuitable?
A Canyoning trip is either cancelled and we return your money back or arranged for another day.

Neda Waterfalls (Καταρράκτες Νέδα)
Ilia prefecture / messinia prefecture, western greece / peloponnese, greece, about neda waterfalls (καταρράκτες νέδα), waterfaller safety & common sense: don't ruin it for everyone else.
Find Nearby Accommodation
The Neda Waterfalls (or Καταρράκτες Νέδα in Greek; also called the Stomio Waterfalls) consist of a pair of gushing waterfalls on a tributary flowing into the Neda River below.
The lower tier is said to have a drop of perhaps 10m or less, but the upper drop is said to have a height of 20-25m, and that’s the main one of the bunch (some sources say the main falls is 50m in height though there must be hidden parts if that’s true).
There’s also a steep cascade beneath the lower tier, which is hard to see as it tumbles and directly feeds the Neda River in its steep canyon.
This is one of the more popular waterfalls in Greece, and we even knew about it on our first trip in 2010.
That said, we didn’t get a chance to visit this place despite us staying in Ancient Olympia (roughly 2 hours drive north of the falls) for a night back on that first trip.
Indeed, it twasn’t until 14 years later, when we finally got a chance to visit the Neda Waterfalls, which is why this write-up exists.
Anyways, despite its popularity, the waterfalls are situated in the rather remote Neda Gorge in the mountainous Western Peloponnese.
Thus, its access is not as trivial as you’d think, and we’ll try to contextualize everything so the situation becomes clearer.
Our visit happened to occur prior to the busier period in the late Spring and in the Summer so it wasn’t as busy as we had expected.
Moreover, the waterfall’s vigorous flow during our early April 2024 visit seemed to defy our expectations that it might struggle to flow due to a multi-year drought that affected much of Southern Europe, including Southern Greece.
By the way, Neda (Νέδα pronounced like “nethuh”; also Νέδαν or Nethan) was a kind of goddess of water or a nymph in Greek mythology, who nursed the child Zeus.
Given the role that she played to the almight Zeus, it seemed fitting that the Neda River (a major river cutting through the Western Peloponnese) is apparently the only river in Greece with a female name.
This river originates from near the village of Neda on Mt Lykaion as it drains an area of 278 square kilometers before flowing west towards the Ionian Sea at the Gulf of Kyparissia near the village of Elis.
How to Access the Neda Waterfalls?
There are two ways to access the trailhead for the Neda Waterfalls:
- from the village of Figaleia (on the border of Messinia and Ilia or Elis)
- from the village of Platania (within the Messinia Prefecture)
Historically, there seemed to be varying accounts in the literature of rather poorly-conditioned roads to even reach the trailhead (something that concerned us going into our hike).
Some even resorted to just making this excursion more of a longer trek from either of these villages (which adds at least 3.3km each way from Figaleia Village or 3.6km each way from Platania Village).
However, as of our visit in early April 2024, it appeared that both ways were valid for driving to their respective “car parks” near the Neda Waterfalls Trailhead.
We go into more detail about the driving route and road conditions for both of these approaches in the directions section.
For the record, as of our early April 2024 visit, we’ve been able to drive to the trailhead from the Figaleia side though we did briefly investigate both ends of the access road from the Platania side.
The actual trailhead itself was just on the north side of the Stone Bridge of Platania (going over the Neda River).
From there, it was roughly a 1.6km round-trip hike according to my GPS logs .
Since we did this hike from the Figaleia side, we’ll describe the trail from its nearest trailhead parking, which added an additional 600m round-trip of walking on an unpaved road.
The hiking difficulty rating and distance/time commitment summaries are reflective of our experience doing this excursion in this manner.
However, if you’re coming from the Platania side, you’re pretty much just right across the Bridge of Platania from the trailhead, which saves you from hiking that additional 300m distance (or 600m round-trip).
Trail Description – The First Neda Waterfall
From the trailhead, we pretty much just followed the signs as the trail ascended from a bench area (with some trash bins and lots of litter) onto a ledged path.
Coming from the Platania side, once you cross the Stone Bridge of Platania, you have a choice of going left up a couple of small switchbacks to join up with the ledged path, or you can go up the road to the right towards the aforementioned trailhead.
Once on the ledged trail, we pretty much just followed its path as it ascended then undulated above the path of the Neda River (walking in a downstream direction) for the next 600m.
Along the way, we could hear the Neda River rushing below us while its sounds reverberated against the tall mountains and cliffs surrounding us within the Neda Gorge.
We noticed that there were ropes set up to help mentally with staying on the ledge trail and not falling into the dropoffs.
However, it appeared that there used to be sturdier wooden railings before they eventually fell into the dropoffs (which you might notice their remnants as we did).
Anyways, after rounding a bend towards the end of this initial 600m stretch, we finally got to see the lower drop of the Neda Waterfalls fronted by a footbridge.
From up at this bend, we could also see parts of the lower cascades spilling into the Neda River, but without a drone, it’s probably best to not try to scramble off-trail to improve the position to take a better photo of them.
Personally I was glad that the waterfalls came from a side tributary and not on the Neda River itself because I could clearly see how rugged the Neda Gorge was as well as how sketchy it would be to descend a waterfall here to get to its bottom.
Anyways, descending from this bend, the trail goes over a potentially slippery slab of rock (marble?) that has been worn smooth through weathering and trail use.
It goes without saying that you’ll want good footwear and good decision making on where to place your steps to minimize the chances of an injury here.
I definitely wouldn’t recommend doing this hike in wet weather because if it’s already this slippery in dry weather, just imagine how much more dangerous this place would be when the rock slabs are wet!
From the footbridge, you have another chance at admiring the gushing lower tier of the Neda Waterfalls and the downstream cascades looking in the other direction.
However, there’s still more to go in order to get the full experience…
Trail Description – The Second Neda Waterfall
Beyond the footbridge, the trail ascends towards a signed junction where the path on the left goes towards a church and a cave tunnel, while the path on the right continues to the big waterfall.
Unfortunately, during our April 2024 visit, authorities had set up a police-tape barricade closing off the church and cave-tunnel branch so we can’t say anything more about what was there.
Thus, we continued to the right as the trail continued its steep stepped ascent before we found ourselves clinging onto more sloping and slippery rock slabs skirting by the brink of the Lower Neda Falls.
There were more ropes set up to help us from slipping and sliding on the smooth rock slabs, but there was one bench that seemed to be more in the way of the tight trail than it was a help.
In any case, after getting past the slippery rock slab obstacles we then arrive at the Big Neda Falls and its attractively clear plunge pool.
While the plunge pool looked inviting during our early April 2024 visit, the water was actually quite cold.
And even though we were the only people at this waterfall during our visit, I’m aware that this place does get quite busy come May and beyond in the Summer.
There really isn’t that much real-estate around the Big Neda Waterfall, so I can easily imagine how crowded this place can get in busier times.
Anyways, once we had our fill of this place, we carefully made our way back to the trailhead to conclude our pleasant outing.
Overall, we spent a little over 90 minutes away from the car to cover the roughly 2.2km distance according to my GPS logs .
Authorities
The Neda Waterfalls reside near the villages of Figaleia and Platania near the border of the Ilia and Messinia Prefectures of the Western Greece and Peloponnese Administrative Regions of Greece, respectively. Although the Neda Gorge has been declared a protected landscape by Greece’s Environment Ministry, it’s still not clear if there’s an official governing body locally that presides over these waterfalls. Nevertheless, it seems like local landowners and town officials from both Figaleia and Platania have been responsible for signs and road/trail infrastructure. For information or inquiries about the area as well as current conditions, you can try visiting the Greece National Tourism Organization website .
The Neda Waterfalls sit in a mountainous region near the central western side of the Peloponnesian Peninsula straddling the Western Greece and Peloponnese Administrative Regions of Greece.
The nearest villages of Filageia and Platania are not really tourist-oriented though that’s changing due to the waterfall’s popularity.
Thus, the nearest towns or cities that we’ve stayed at involving our visit to these waterfalls are Pylos / Gialova to the south and Ancient Olympia / Pyrgos to the north.
Therefore, I’ll describe the driving directions from both perspectives as well as from Kalamata , which is the main town in the former Messinia Prefecture within the Peloponnese Administrative Region.
Moreover, since there are two approaches to the Neda Waterfalls (one from Figaleia Village and the other from Platania Village), I’ll also address them individually.
The Driving Route from Pylos to Platania or Figaleia
From Pylos, we drove about 4km towards a roundabout where the 3rd exit took us towards Gialova and eventually to Kiparissias Pilou on the Route 9 (the other exit goes towards Kalamata).
Then, we’d follow the coastal Route 9 north towards Kalo Nero via Filiatra and Kyparissia (roughly 60km from the roundabout).
Note that during our visit in early April 2024, the E09 road just south of Filiatra was closed and we had to detour on the Road 1715 through Marathopoli to regain the Route 9 at Filiatra.
At Kalo Nero, we then took the E55 Highway east.
Although in hindsight, it might have been easier to take the E55 towards Kopanaki before heading north to the Road 1729 via Kefalovrisi, we wound up exiting onto the Road 1729 and following its winding trajectory for nearly 23km.
Eventually, we encountered a sign accompanied by a sharp turnoff to our left for the Neda Waterfalls.
This was the entrance to the road leading down to the village of Platania and ultimately to the car park for the Neda Waterfalls in a steep and narrow road (with the sign indicating it was 3km down this way).
We can’t vouch for the condition of this road nor the parking situation in Platania (if you determine that you don’t want to take this road all the way down to the Neda River) since we didn’t do it.
However, we did see a passenger-looking vehicle parked in the “car park” south of the Stone Bridge of Platania, which suggested to me that the road can’t be that bad to make it down there.
Perhaps in the past, the last 700m of the road might have been in really rough shape (possibly 4wd only; at least according to what I saw in the topo map on Gaia GPS ), but that might be old news.
All I know is that road conditions can and will change due to weathering and how much maintenance it gets from local authorities.
Anyways, we opted not to go down the Platania Route so we continued on the Road 1729 for a little over 6km towards Figaleia (also spelled Figalia or Phigaleia).
This road descended steeply towards the Neda River before rising steeply out of the canyon then entering the narrow lanes of Figaleia Village.
Eventually, when we got to a junction right across from a camping site in the village, we saw another sign pointing the way to the left towards the Neda Waterfalls.
Then, we continued to follow the signs towards the waterfalls as we went down a steep, switchbacking road for the final 3.3km that was paved or graded in some spots while unpaved with some rock protrusions in other spots.
As far as the road conditions were concerned, I felt that the last stretch of unpaved road to the Kalamaris Waterfalls might have been scarier than this one, but there were certainly some ruts and tire popping rock protrusions on this road as well.
We ultimately had to park in a large clearing at one of the bottommost switchbacks as the rest of the road abruptly became unsuitable for most vehicles at the trailhead just north of the Stone Bridge of Platania.
Overall, we spent over two hours doing this drive though it might have been closer to 90 minutes had we gone down the Platania approach.
The Driving Route from Ancient Olympia to Figaleia or Platania
Coming from Ancient Olympia (we had actually driven this route in the other direction), we headed south for 13km on a combination of local roads (namely the 1408 and 1406) before reaching the E09 road due south near Kallikomo.
If we had come from Pyrgos, then we’d just take Highway E09 southeast for about 18km to get to this point.
Continuing further south on the E09, we’d drive another 22km south towards the town of Tholo (or Tholon), where we’d then leave the E09 and head east on the Road 1410 towards Nea Figaleia and eventually to the village of Perivolia (roughly 34km from Tholo).
At that point we’d leave the Road 1410 and then continue on the Road 1413 south towards Figaleia, where we’d then encounter the signed turnoff for the Neda Waterfalls to go the final 3.3km distance.
Of course, we could have also continued driving through Figaleia towards the turnoff on the right for Platania in another 6km to go the remaining 3.6km distance down the Platania Road.
Overall, the stretch between Ancient Olympia and Figaleia took us a little under 2 hours.
The Driving Route from Kalamata to Platania or Figaleia
Finally, it’s also possible to take a non-coastal route leaving from Kalamata to the Neda Waterfalls.
This involved driving north on the E55 tollway for about 31km before continuing west on the E55 Highway for another 20km to the turnoff leaving the highway going into Kopanaki.
From there, we’d drive the remaining 18km or so to the sharp signed turnoff on the left for Platania for its 3km access road to the Neda River.
Or, we could continue driving another 6km to Figaleia to access its 3.3km road down to the Neda River.
According to GoogleMaps, this drive would take under 90 minutes (though that might be aggressive considering how slow going mountain driving in Greece can be).
For context, Kalo Nero is about 8km (under 15 minutes drive) north of Kyparissia , 14km (under 15 minutes drive) south of Tholo , 51km (under an hour drive) south of Ancient Olympia , 54km (under an hour drive) south of Pyrgos , 60km (about an hour drive) north of Pylos , 64km (under an hour drive) northwest of Kalamata , 148km (under 2 hours drive) west of Nafplio , 152km (over 2 hours drive) south of Patras , and 241km (about 3 hours drive) southwest of Athens .
