10 Best Jungle Hiking Destinations In The World

  • by Jonny Duncan
  • June 22, 2023 June 26, 2023

Jungle hiking (or jungle trekking) is one of the best experiences for the adventurous traveller and, although there are many great places to do it, these are 10 of the best destinations to go to.

Best Destinations For Jungle Hiking

There are so many possibilities for jungle hiking in the world it would take forever to list them all but this is a rundown of some of the better places to go jungle hiking.

Some of these I have been to myself and some are others recommended by friends who have been there.

Kelabit Highlands – Borneo

Jungle hiking in the Kelabit Highlands in Borneo.

The Kelabit Highlands in Borneo are very remote to get to and are located on the Malaysian side of Borneo Island just on the border with the Indonesian side.

There are quite a few jungle hiking routes there that you can do. It’s best to show up and ask local advice on where to go. You can hire a local guide when there.

You will hike through lush jungle forest and can meet some of the local tribes from the region.

Khao Sok National Park – Thailand

jungle trek photos

Thailand is a great destination for travellers and has some popular treks in the northwest of the country that takes you to waterfalls and the hill tribes.

However at the less visited Khao Sok National Park is where you can find some of the best jungle hiking in Thailand. These hikes are less strenuous than more hardcore jungle hikes in the likes of Borneo but are still a great adventure to have.

The added bonus here is that you also have the option to go canoeing and rafting around the jungle area.

You can do a long day jungle hike or spend a few nights in the jungle.

Kokoda Track – Papua New Guinea

jungle trek photos

If you’re looking for an epic and hard jungle trek to do, then the Kokoda Track is for you.

It’s a trek that is 96 kilometres going the overland way, not the direct route and traverses across mountains.

The other great thing about this hike is you get to see local tribal people.

Chitwan National Park – Nepal

jungle trek photos

Nepal is best known for its mountain trekking, but if you head to the south you will find a hotter steamy side to Nepal, especially at Chitwan National Park where you can go jungle hiking and try to spot wildlife on the way.

Visiting Chitwan and doing jungle hikes there was one of my favourite experiences in the Asian subcontinent.

Gorilla Trekking Volcanoes National Park – Rwanda

jungle trek photos

Rwanda is a great place in Africa to go jungle hiking especially because you can do a hike to see Gorillas in the wild.

Although the hike to see the gorillas is just a day trip it’s an experience you won’t forget.

This is one of the best shorter jungle hikes you can do.

Virunga National Park – Congo

The Virunga National Park goes along with the Rwanda recommendation as it’s just across the border.

This option though adds a bit more adventure than the Rwanda one as the Congo gets less visitors and feels more remote and rougher than Rwanda.

Monteverde Cloud Forest – Costa Rica

jungle trek photos

Costa Rica, if fact Central America in general, is one of the best places in the world to do a jungle trek as much of the area is covered in jungle.

The Monteverde Cloud Forest is a great jungle hiking destination in Central America and one of the most beautiful jungle/rainforest environments you can get to relatively easily.

Daintree Rainforest – Australia

jungle trek photos

The Daintree Rainforest in the northeast of Queensland in Australia is the oldest surviving rainforest in the world.

There are also nearby white sand beaches and coral reefs to explore along the various tracks you can choose from.

Harapan Rainforest – Indonesia

jungle trek photos

The Harapan Rainforest is located in the north of Sumatra in Indonesia and is a beautiful biodiverse region with a lot of wildlife.

It’s also home to endangered orangutans and you can enjoy long day hikes in the jungle or arrange longer trips with staying a number of nights in the jungle area.

Machu Picchu Jungle Hike – Peru

jungle trek photos

Machu Picchu is one of the most impressive sites in South America and is a famous place to hike to in Peru. Most people do the regular hike there, but there is also the option to do a jungle hike as well.

I’m putting this option last as it’s less of a “jungle hike” than the others as there is much more mountains involved, but it’s such an epic hike to one of the most impressive ruins in the world that I added it here.

It takes around 4 days to do this hike.

Just be aware that the Peruvian government only grants a certain amount of permits per year for hiking to Machu Picchu, so check as far ahead as possible if you want to do this hike.

If you don’t want to jungle hike to Machu Picchu you can do a day tour there from Cusco or stay overnight. Recommended tours:

Jungle Hiking Advice

The general rule for jungle hiking is to be prepared with the right gear.

Depending where you go, one of my personal recommendations if you’re planning ahead and have access to buy some then get some leech socks if you’re expecting leeches on the jungle hike, which is most likely going to be the case.

This is an obvious one, but make sure you drink a lot of water when jungle hiking. Take water purifying tablets or a water filtration system.

Be aware of the environment you’re in and always ask local advice on the particular conditions that you will face.

Where possible it’s highly advisable to take a local guide, not only for safety reasons, but also you will get a more in-depth knowledge of the terrain you are in and the wildlife you will experience.

Jungle Hiking

Those are some of the ultimate destinations for jungle hiking (or trekking, whatever you choose to call it) in the world.

Enjoy whichever one you choose!

Chhattisgarh Jungle Trek: A Photo Story

Category Photo Story

By Latika Payak

Jungle treks are rare. And here’s a glimpse of one such trek with you. It’s the Chhattisgarh Jungle trek.

“The forests in these regions are untouched and dreamy. I’m not surprised that Rudyard Kipling was inspired by these forests while writing The Jungle Book. They absolutely live up to our imagination of The Jungle Book!” says Arjun Majumdar, the founder of Indiahikes.

Frankly, these forests are out of bounds for the public. You require special permissions from the forest department to get in. Indiahikes has a special arrangement with the forest department to trek through these forests. As trekkers, it’s a rare privilege to see and feel these near-inaccessible forest reserves.

This photo story gives you a day-wise glimpse of this rare jungle trek.

The Dense Sal Forest

Himalayan treks usually follow a pattern. You start by trekking through pine, oak, rhododendron forest, pop out of the tree line into the meadows and then trek to a high point in the alpine zone.

But things are totally different on the Chhattisgarh Jungle trek.

You trek through dense Sal forest. “The forest is alive with wildlife. You always have this uncanny feeling that you are being watched. There is an invisible omnipresence of wild animals around you. Sometimes it sends chills down your spine,” shares Senior Trek Leader Nitesh Kumar, who was instrumental in designing the current  route of the Chhattisgarh Jungle Trek.

These forests are unlike the ones you see in the Himalayas. They are dense, but because trees are well-spaced, your gaze is able to penetrate the depths of the jungle. Photo by Nitesh Kumar.

Experiencing Ancient Caves in the Jungle

“Entering the cave was a different experience. It’s dark. And the walls of the cave have been uniquely patterned by years of erosion,” shares Nitesh.

Slightly off-trail, you notice an ancient cave in the forest. Photo by Nitesh.

The insides of the cave quickly transport you to another world. An ancient world where people would often take shelter within such cave to escape from the wild animals in the jungle. Photo by Nitesh Kumar.

The Thrill of Finding Pug Marks

You'll find many fresh pug marks of wild animals on the Chhattisgarh Jungle trail. "These pug marks can be as fresh as a 10-30 minutes ago. And it gives you chills thinking that merely a few minutes prior, a wild animal crossed this path," Nitesh says while sharing his experience of trekking in the jungle.

These fresh pug marks always remind you about the presence of the wild animals. It's like you are always being watched.

jungle trek photos

Suddenly after crossing the river we got to see this on the trail. But Mowgli couldn’t see Bagheera 🙂 Naseeb mein sirf unka pug mark tha (Fate only consisted of his pug mark)

Staying in a tribal village. Camping by the shores of a lake and river

The camping experience of Chhattisgarh Jungle trek is also unique. On the first night you stay in a homestay at a tribal village called Turripani. This experience takes you close to the lives of villagers who stay so deep into the forest. You also get to savour some local delicacies like litti chokha . You'll notice how intimately their life is connected to the forest cycles.

After the first night, you shift to staying in tents. What's absolutely a delight is the fact that both the camps from now are stationed by a water body. The first campsite -- Tadiyabaan is by the Tadiya lake. The second campsite, Pandupara is on the banks of the Gopat river.

The Enjoyable River Walk

On no other trek do you get this unique experience. "The Gopat river is very gentle, very unlike the roaring, gushing rivers in the Himalayas. This river lazily snakes through the forest. And the water merely comes up to the ankles," Nitesh says while describing the Gopat river.

The river bed is soft, devoid of any pebbles. Walking on this river bed, with gentle cold water flowing is an enjoyable experience. Photo by Nitesh Kumar.

Climbing to the Highest Point

The trail within the jungle of Chhattisgarh may seem like it's flat. But it's not so. There are good ascends and descends on this trek. You climb to the highest altitude of 2,820 ft on this trek.

jungle trek photos

You can see the Guru Ghasidas National Park stretched in front of you from the highest point on the Chhattisgarh Jungle trek. Photo by Nitesh Kumar.

jungle trek photos

The landscape is undulating. Here you see trekkers descending from the red plateau. Right in front is the Raja Pahad, the highest hill in the region. Photo by Nitesh Kumar.

Trekking deep into the jungles of Chhattisgarh is a unique experience. Very different from a Himalayan trek. Do this trek to experience life in jungles in the heart of India. It's a rare experience, not accessible to all. And something that can be savoured only while on a multi-day trek in this region.

Jungle Trekking in Thailand to Kratengjeng Waterfall

jungle trekking in thailand

What's In This Guide?

Jungle trekking in thailand solo.

Jungle trekking in Thailand has always been a fascination to me. The thought of taking an Indiana Jones style adventure. Cutting away hanging vines with a machete while slowly working through the jungle to reveal the hidden Temple of Doom.

Now the trek to Kratengjeng Waterfall isn’t quite as extreme, but it isn’t very far off.

banana-trees-while-jungle-trekking-in-thailand

Kratengjeng Waterfall is located about 49 kilometers from Sangkhlaburi in the Khao Laem National Park. This is the far west of Kanchanaburi Province, past the floating   Sai Yok Jungle Rafts   but before the Three Pagodas Pass   leading to Myanmar. The road signs for the waterfall are nothing obvious to be looking out for, so it’s best that you know where you’re going.

Make sure you know where to go by   downloading your google maps pin here !

Driving through the national park headquarters on the back road we discreetly avoid the 200 THB foreigner entry fee. We head up the narrow dirt trail to the starting point of the jungle trek where the distances to various levels are marked out.

Heading Deep Into the Jungle

The jungle trek is 4.8 kilometers in total and should take at least 3 hours. This allows plenty of time to catch your breath, take a few photos and just enjoy the nature.

Getting this far off the track and into the jungle is an amazing experience in Thailand. The last time I’d been this deep into the jungle unguided was at the Phu Kaeng Waterfall in Chiang Rai.

Read: Things to do in Chiang Rai Province

jungle-trekking-in-thailand

After the first 50 meters the trail becomes so thick and overgrown that we realize this jungle trek is best done with closed shoes and long pants. There seems like plenty of chances for snake and spiders in here with no one to help if things turn bad.

The lower part of the jungle trek consists of a fairly flat trail winding through wild banana trees. The air is dense and humid, mosquitoes are rife in a place where Malaria is common, and the surrounding screeching of insects is almost deafening. This is the easy part.

Read: Your One Stop Thailand Travel Guide

About 1 kilometer into the trek the level of difficulty increases. The trail takes a sharp turn up a slippery mud slope. We reach the top using jungle vines in an abseiling like technique.

“if elephants come, I hide in there”

In multiple locations we pass by piles of elephant droppings. My Thai travel companion warns me “jungle elephants, if he comes I hide in there,” as he point to a tree that looks reasonably climbable. This adds to the anxiety of jungle trekking in Thailand, solo and un-contactable.

Reaching level three of the trek is a great relief. Finally some cool running water to wash away the sweat and mud accumulated. This is also a beautiful place to relax out in the middle of the jungle.

kratengjeng-waterfall-jungle-trek-2

We continue deeper into the midst of Thailand’s dense jungle. From here the trail crosses back and forth over the river multiple times and seems to vanish. In some places the route markers are so hidden that we are only guided by distant wooden ladders hiding among the over growth. Where the trail disappears completely we choose to walk directly upstream.

where the trail disappears completely we walk upstream.

Getting to the top the upper levels of Kratengjeng Waterfall are in one word, amazing.

The cool water streams though the dense jungle growth accumulating into waist deep swimming ponds.

The nearby Erawan National Park and Waterfall is crowded on weekends. Here there is absolutely no one around, we have the entire place to ourselves.

swimming-pool-while-jungle-trekking-in-thailand

After enjoying the tranquil settings for a good hour we notice the dark clouds rolling overhead. This is the wet season, a dangerous time to be stranded out jungle trekking in Thailand alone when the rain comes down full force.

We decide to make a quick retreat back to the car before the stream becomes a flash flood and the trail becomes totally unrecognizable.

Tips on Trekking Kratengjeng Waterfall

  • Pack some sturdy closed shoes, flip flops will fail quick
  • The hardest part is getting to the start of the trail. Get the exact location with your google maps pin here
  • Allow at least 3 hours for the full trail
  • Bring plenty of water and some snacks, the last shops are in Sangkhlaburi almost 50km away
  • Take only photos and leave only footprints. One of the most beautiful things about Kratengjeng Waterfall is that there’s no rubbish lying around, please don’t change this!

This place was great, very rustic but cute huts. We really enjoyed the common area as that’s where we would chill out and have some drinks in the afternoon. The food and people were great, our guide Franklin was amazing, if you go I highly recommend him!!

Trek Hidden Costa Rica Tour

Trek Hidden Costa Rica

Costa Rica is a nation and a culture of community. Thus, it is no surprise that our CEO, Jorge Mendez (a Tico himself), should be so adept at making our 16 member trekking group a community. Even more compelling is Jorge’s knowledge of the ecology (birds—by sound or sight, mammals, reptiles, geology) of Costa Rica. Additionally, he reads the strengths and weaknesses of each of the trekkers, and is patiently supportive as the need becomes apparent. Just as important, he also knows when to give time and space for reflection. Jorge made an excellent trip a GREAT trip. Thank you, Jorge¡ I have not yet screened all my pictures; I assume I can submit them later? Please advise. Fred Newport

Essential Costa Rica - Package with Manuel Antonio National Park Tour

It was very good. Everything was organized well. All the transfers and pick ups ran smoothly. I only thing I would say is that I was disappointed that we never saw anyone from Designation Services or anyone they had booked through Tour Radar.

Colombia - Lost City Trekking Tour

Colombia - Lost City Trekking

The lost city is a beautiful place and an absolute must for people when in Colombia, it is quite challenging so need to be healthy. There was another tour that was identical to ours using the same company but offered much cheaper (some 300 dollars) than G Adventures, so would recommend looking into using Wiwa tours and skipping out the middle man

The Kokoda Track Tour

The Kokoda Track

Base Camp was an epic, challenging adventure - made all the better for our excellent guides: leader Hem, and assistant guides Mekh & Indra. Our safety and welfare was their #1 priority, and made sure we were looked after all the way! Spending time acclimatising, and enjoying the hospitality of the owners of the teahouses was a great experience. The scenery was just 'wow moment' every day, and we all made it to Base Camp with the exception of one (very important to train beforehand, as it is more likely you will make it the whole way) I would highly recommend Intrepid Travel for your Everest Base Camp trip!

4 days 3 nights – Peruvian Tambopata Jungle Tour

4 days 3 nights – Peruvian Tambopata Jungle

The overall experience was excellent for our group of 8. Our guide for the duration, Jonathan, was super helpful and so full of knowledge. He was able to find us all the animals we were looking for including capybaras and even a sloth. The food was nice but there aren't really any options. The accommodations were "basic". Very, very basic. Only a bare bulb with power from 5-9pm. If you can get past those issues, you will have a great time. All of the excursions were amazing.

From Buenos Aires to the Jungle & falls

The trip was fantastic - we probably should have thought about doing something on the second day but that's hindsight. All arrangements were perfect - the hotel lovely and well located - breakfast was delicious and plenty of restaurants around. The Falls were stunning and Jorge did his best to guide us - unfortunately there were 4 out of 7 of our group who were physically challenged with the walking - I am not sure if they had booked with you but I would suggest that customers are made fully aware of the walking involved and level of fitness and agility required. A tough call I know but they would have been disappointed and it meant Jorge had to keep flitting between the two groups. He did a fantastic job.

The overall tour was fantastic. Our guides in Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro were great. The breakfasts were nothing to shout about. Transportations were punctual.

Hidden Colombia - Explore Bogotá, Santa Marta, and Trek to \'The Lost City\' Tour

Hidden Colombia - Explore Bogotá, Santa Marta, and Trek to 'The Lost City'

My mother and I went on the Hidden Colombia trek to the Lost City back in January/February of 2015 and were so absolutely amazed at our experience! Almost every single thing was taken care of for us by OneSeed: from our airport rides in Bogota, our B&B accommodations, our flight to Santa Marta, all meals while on the breath-taking hike to La Ciudad Perdida, and so much more! Our guides, Sally and Wilson, were beyond great, and our cook, Danilo, was fabulous! We had three perfect meals per day, plus a couple carb-loaded snacks in between to fuel our bodies throughout the day while climbing the Andes. Our experience was so perfect, that my mom and I went AGAIN in January, 2016! We just simply had a craving for more intense hiking. The second time around was just as great as the first. Hopefully we will be booking a third trip with OneSeed in the next few months, either to Machu Picchu or back to Colombia! I would recommend them to anybody!

Macaw clay lick and sandoval lake 5D/4N Tour

Macaw clay lick and sandoval lake 5D/4N

It was a great experience overall. The guides were good. On the 5 day, it's quite an interruption to switch locations - I wonder if this could be made smoother. There is also the issue of illegal mining right alongside the Tambopata lodge, and the lodge is deforesting land itself for a banana plantation - we'd hope there would be ways to resolve this, and really steer the lodge into being a force for good in the environment. It would be ideal to add a few extra clothes lines for guests.

Machu Picchu Jungle Trek 4D/3N (Biking Only) Tour

Machu Picchu Jungle Trek 4D/3N (Biking Only)

I really appreciated the jungle trek to Machu Picchu. Our guide had a lot of knowledge about the region and his schtick worked very well for our group of 6. The activities of this package were absolutely great. This is definitely one of the best moments I have had in South America. It was also a great opportunity to meet new people with whom I’m still in contact with.

Machu Picchu Jungle Trek 4D/3N (Biking, Zip-Line & Rafting)

One must visit to Machu Picchu jungle trek if you are looking for a real fun adventurous tour. I would definitely recommend Bamba experience if you are planning to go on such adventure trip. Its very important to have a good service from your tour operator since your entire trip depends on it, and Bamba experience did not leave us disappointed with its service. The highlight of this trip for me was the most efficient tour guide. Returned home happily and with complete satisfaction.

Jungle trekking reviews.

This trip was truly the trip of a lifetime. Jesus really submerges you into the Peruvian culture and the three days you’re there, you are nonstop with activities. Our guide was so knowledgeable and he made the trip. His family grew up in the rainforest so he was able to tell you the history about most things there (the families, the foods, the animals etc). We went during rainy season, and still had a wonderful time. If you’re looking for adventure, meeting wonderful people, and being in nature - this trip is for you!
Great tour, great guide, wonderful local guides! The hiking, homestays, cave overnight, and rafting were spectacular.
Interesting and educational trip.

Complete Guide to Maharajah Jungle Trek at Animal Kingdom

Complete Guide to Maharajah Jungle Trek at Animal Kingdom

At Animal Kingdom, there are a lot of different ways to see animals — it is called Animal Kingdom for a reason, after all.

Along with Kilimanjaro Safaris , you can hang out and observe creatures big and small all over the park, and one of the easiest ways to do this is on one of the trails offered here.

One of the most popular trails is the Maharajah Jungle Trek, which you can find in the Asia area of the park. Here, you’ll get to see tigers interacting with each other (or, during certain parts of the day, adorably napping), along with birds, buffalo, and plenty of other animals.

But before you visit, there are a few things you need to know to make the most of your experience on the trail. Join us for our complete guide to Maharajah Jungle Trek.

In this article

Maharajah Jungle Trek Quick Facts

  • Location: Animal Kingdom, in Asia
  • Height requirement: None
  • Suitable for: Everyone
  • Attraction length: Self-guided
  • Do we recommend? As a solid time-filler, especially for animal lovers
  • When to visit: Anytime
  • Scheduled Refurbishments
  • Tip(s): If you love tigers, visit early in the morning when they’re the most active.

Description: The Maharajah Jungle Trek is a self-guided, adventurous trail to explore and see animals up close and personal. Though the tigers are definitely the star of the show here, you’ll also see 50 species of birds, along with animals including buffalo, deer, and gibbons as you walk across bridges and see beautiful waterfalls.

Maharajah Jungle Trek is located in the Asia area of Animal Kingdom. Take the path on the left of Kali River Rapids , and follow it back to find the entrance to the trail.

How to Experience Maharajah Jungle Trek

Since it’s a self-guided attraction, Maharajah Jungle Trek doesn’t have a Standby Line, Lightning Lane, or Single Rider Line .

Maharajah Jungle Trek

No matter what time of day it is, you will be able to walk up and start exploring without a wait, making this a great time-filler attraction for when you find a bit of downtime while waiting for a dining reservation or Lightning Lane time slot.

The best times of the day to visit depend on what you’re hoping to get out of the experience. Though the trek isn’t typically ever too crowded, it will always be at its busiest (and hottest) during the afternoons, like many other attractions.

tigers maharajah jungle trek animal kingdom

But if you’re hoping to see the tigers at their most active, you’ll want to visit first thing in the morning (and crowds should be lower then, too).

Keep in mind that Maharajah Jungle Trek typically opens a bit later than the rest of the park and closes a bit earlier, so you may want to check the hours for the day you plan to visit before you head over.

Do I Need To Use Genie+ at Maharajah Jungle Trek?

Genie+ isn’t offered at Maharajah Jungle Trek, but that’s okay; you’ll be able to experience the trail at any time during the day without a wait. And don’t worry — you’ll find plenty of other experiences to use those Lightning Lanes for, like Expedition Everest .

maharajah jungle trek animal kingdom

Since it’s self-guided, you can expect to spend anywhere from 20 minutes to over an hour here. If you want to hang out and watch the tigers for hours, there’s no one to stop you —  live your best animal loving life here!

For more Genie+ advice during your trip, don’t forget to check out our touring strategies for Animal Kingdom.

What To Expect When You Visit

There’s no queue at this attraction. You should be able to walk right onto the trail when you arrive and start exploring right away, which is one of the reasons this is a good spontaneous activity to add into your park day.

Accessibility Information

Like the other trails at Animal Kingdom, Maharajah Jungle Trek is fully accessible. Those who are using ECVs and wheelchairs will be able to remain in them while exploring this attraction.

Audio description is also available to guests with hearing disabilities.

During the Experience

Like many other attractions at Animal Kingdom, the Maharajah Jungle Trek isn’t just a trail where you can see animals — it’s also got a storyline of its own.

Here, you’re visiting a wildlife preserve that was reclaimed from a dynasty of wealthy princes who wanted to use the land to hunt. Now, there’s far more harmony among the villagers and the animals who inhabit the area.

Along the way, the trail tells the story of what happened here through imagery on the buildings and structures along the path, and even a tomb that is supposed to be for Anantah, the founder of Anandapur.

Maharajah Jungle Trek

As you explore, you’ll travel through the Royal Anadapur Forest on winding, paved pathways featuring several different species of animals and birds including:

  • Komodo dragons
  • Sumatran tigers
  • Water buffalo
  • Malayan flying fox
  • Black tree monitor
  • Eld’s deer
  • Cotton pigmy goose
  • Asian fairy-bluebird

At one point during the trail, you’ll reach an open air bat habitat, meaning there’s no glass — you’ll be able to see these little creatures flying around you (and yes, there’s a way to bypass this habitat if you feel a bit squeamish about that idea).

Maharajah Jungle Trek

The trail itself is quite beautiful and includes some areas with awesome theming that fans of the parks will really enjoy, along with waterfalls, fountains, and other scenery.

Is Maharajah Jungle Trek Kid-Friendly?

Maharajah Jungle Trek has plenty of things kids love: the chance to see animals up close, and plenty of room (and freedom) to run around and explore. In fact, you may find that it’s a great place for them to use up some energy while also learning about different animals.

wilderness explorers clubhouse booklet animal kingdom

And for the Wilderness Explorers out there, the trek does include a stop to grab a sticker badge for your handbook.

There’s nothing on the trail that should scare little ones, unless they’re afraid of certain animals, but be sure to check out our guide to things that may be scary at WDW while planning your trip.

Since this is a fully accessible trail, strollers are allowed at Maharajah Jungle Trek. This makes it a great place for the adults to walk around while little ones are napping or taking a break from all that walking, especially with a cold drink or snack in hand.

Maharajah Jungle Trek opened on March 1, 1999, a little less than a year after Animal Kingdom’s grand opening on April 22, 1998.

Maharajah Jungle Trek

Through the years, there have been a few notable animals who called the trek home, including the first Sumatran tiger cubs ever born at Animal Kingdom, Anala and Jeda.

In 2015, three water buffalo joined the trek, named Blanche, Dorothy, and Rose after characters from The Golden Girls. This also marked the addition of a pool for the buffalo on the trail.

  • “Maharajah” is an Indian word for “prince,” nodding to the royal theming of the attraction.

Elephant Trek

Venture into elephant territory on our 10-day expedition.

Our elephant trek will take place in the deep jungle of Gunung Leuser National Park and is scheduled for 10 days to increase the likelihood of an elephant sighting. On our quest, we will climb mountains, cross valleys and venture into flatter areas of the rainforest in the north of Sumatra, where the preferred territory of the forest giants lies. Walk along their trails, cross rainforest rivers and take in the pure, pristine nature around you to the full…

Far more than “just” the forest elephants of Sumatra await you on this unique expedition!

Trip Profile

10 days & 9 nights, challenging, bukit lawang, bukit lawang (+9), 7 days with 2 scouts, group: 9.500.000 idr pp private: 17.500.000 idr pp, smaller chances, 10 days with 3 scouts, group: 12.500.000 idr pp private: 25.000.000 idr pp, higher chances, everything except tips 😉, 2 - 6 people, trip highlights.

  • Experience the adventure of a lifetime far from civilisation
  • Explore the pristine rainforest of northern Sumatra and keep your eyes open for wild orangutans, various species of monkeys, gibbons & siamangs and especially for st elephants - there's even a chance of a tiger sighting (but no guarantee)
  • Hike through rainforest streams and enjoy splendid baths in cool rivers or under breathtaking waterfalls
  • With the possibility of extending the trek, we will have a good chance of finding your dream photo motif in the depths of the rainforest.
  • You alone determine the pace: whether you are a photographer who would like to stay a little longer at a certain spot or an adventurer whose goal is to venture as deep as possible into the rainforest - all variations are possible!
  • Sleep under the jungle sky and let yourself be enchanted by the special sounds of the rainforest at night...

On this once-in-a-lifetime adventure, there is an extremely realistic chance of encountering wild forest elephants. To increase the likelihood of a sighting, we have put together a very special & highly experienced team : Besides your English-speaking guide and assistant guide , you will be accompanied by our chef and 3 so-called “scouts” ! They know the jungle inside out and will try to locate the current position of the wildlife before your trek. If this is in a more remote part of the national park, you will be taken there by motorbike or jeep , which costs an extra of 300,000 to 1.000.000 IDR (depending on the location) .

Our 10-day expedition usually starts around 9 am in Bukit Lawang. Depending on the motorbike ride that might be required, the starting time may change slightly. Once we arrive at the starting point of our expedition, the adventure can begin! After we have hiked into the rainforest for a while, we will have a revitalising break with tropical fruits. Then it is time to hike on and cover ground to get closer to the elephant territory step by step. After an energising lunch of nasi goreng, the hike continues until about 4 pm. Around this time, your team will start looking for a suitable place to camp in order to have the tent up before sunset. During the first camp set-up, it’s all about watching and learning, but in the following days, your team will be happy for any help. Once we have reached our first camp, our scouts will head out in different directions to look for fresh evidence of elephants. This way we save a lot of time and distance, which increases the chances of sightings enormously.

During our search for the forest elephants, with a bit of luck we can also sight other wildlife . For example, various species of deer, seraues (Asian genus of goat-like animals), wild orangutans, gibbons & siamangs, several species of monkeys (Thomas leaf monkeys, pig-tailed macaques, long-tailed macaques (Javanese monkeys) and silvered leaf monkeys), snakes, eagles and exotics such as the hornbill. At dusk, there is a good chance of spotting deer, mouse deer, sun bears and wild boar. However, all these animals will be very shy as they are not used to the sight of humans in the deep jungle. Observation will therefore mostly take place from a distance. But you will most likely be able to admire many different insects from a very close distance 😉

Normally, our daily routine will look like this:

After breakfast, around 9 am, when everything has been stowed away and all human remains have been removed, we will break camp and move further into the jungle. Every day, a hike of about 6 to 7 hours awaits us. There will be breaks and lunch along the way, of course. Always keep your eyes open for signs of the forest giants or other wildlife! Any paths you can make out in the thicket are forest elephant trails. Broken branches, footprints and dung heaps are clues for your guides to assess when the elephants were there last. Along the way, we will climb mountains, cross rivers and hike through valleys. Every afternoon around 4 pm , your expedition team will look for a suitable place to camp . Now you are welcome to help set up the tent from sticks or bamboo poles and a large plastic tarp , or to collect firewood for cooking. Cooking will be done from the ingredients we brought from Bukit Lawang plus fresh ingredients we will collect during our trek, such as fern, the inside of the banana plant, young bamboo or even fresh fish. Your guide will be able to tell you a lot about eatable and healing rainforest plants – so feel free to ask him! Besides, there will be tea or coffee and biscuits and in the evening there will be a lot of chatting or playing games to pass the time. Of course, it is also possible to leave the camp again during dusk to look for crepuscular and nocturnal animals. We will then all sleep together under the constructed tent. There is a thin mattress, a sleeping bag and a mosquito net for each of us. River water is boiled every evening at camp so you can fill up your bottle with it.

This is the daily routine for all the following days. If you particularly like a place during the trek (e.g. because of good photo opportunities or lots of wildlife in the area) and would like to stay there for several days , this is possible – please discuss this thoroughly with your guide so that he can adjust the route accordingly.

Your backpack should be packed as light as possible for this expedition. You will only need a few changes of clothes (preferably light sportswear), mosquito spray, a torch, a light rain jacket, a hoodie for the night and any medication you may need. Feel free to check out our packing list for more information. Everything else will be provided by us.

At the end of the expedition, one of the scouts will leave us and hike back to Bukit Lawang to inform our rafting team of our current position. This team will join us at day 9 to prepare the rafting for day 10. This way we want to give you more precious time in the deep jungle instead of having to walk back halfway through. Depending on how deep we have gone into the rainforest during our expedition, the raft ride can take up to 8 hours . As it can get a bit cold, we will take breaks to have lunch and warm up. Back in Bukit Lawang, your guide will take you to your guesthouse where you can recharge your batteries (and those of your camera) and evaluate your adventures and photos.

The chances of spotting single elephants or even a herd are very realistic on this expedition – but we can’t promise a sighting . The trek is scheduled for 10 days to keep the chances as high as possible. However, if you want to be more sure, we can arrange more days in advance.

Info: Besides a sense of adventure, average to good physical fitness is required for this expedition. Conditions can be hot and at times strenuous in a tropical rainforest climate. The expedition is not for the faint hearted or those seeking the luxury of the jungle. We camp together in a tent each night and the river serves as a shower to wash us. No one will return with clean clothes!

In the event of an encounter with forest elephants and other wild animals, we ask you to strictly follow the rules, instructions and orders of your guides, as they are in the best position to assess and control the situation.

What's included:

  • All permits (National Park & Indonesiasn Guide Association HPI)
  • English-speaking guide from Bukit Lawang, scouts & kitchen team
  • Camping equipment: shared tent, thin mattresses, sleeping bag, mosquito net

Important Information

Our trekking groups have a maximum size of 6 people. If you are travelling with more than 6 people, we will still be able to find a good solution together.

In the high season (June to August) it is possible to join other travellers on their jungle trek. It is often a valuable enrichment to meet other people on a trek through the rainforest. However, especially in low season and as the 10-day expedition is not regularly booked, we cannot promise to find other trekking companions for your preferred date.

When booking your trek, please let us know how many people you will be participating with and whether you prefer a private or group trek.

Your expedition team will consist of a certified English-speaking guide from Bukit Lawang, an assistant guide, 3 men for kitchen and camping equipment and a local guide from Lepan to have a knowledgeable tour leader who knows the latest information about current positions of the wildlife. The entire team is highly trained and experienced to handle risky situations with ease. If you consistently follow their instructions, you are in safe hands and have nothing to worry about.

Besides a sense of responsibility for people and nature, our guides and team members have a great sense of humor and possess an enormous cordiality. During these 10 days, they will take good care of you and welcome you into their jungle family!

Every afternoon, your expedition team will find a suitable place to camp. There you will build a large waterproof tent out of bamboo and a huge plastic tarp, which offers enough space for everyone. There will be a thin mattress for each person. If you want some privacy, we can rent you a normal two-man tent, which you can set up next to your team’s tent. If you have one, please bring your own sleeping bag and pillow. However, if you do not have these, we can rent you both. Please let us know in advance if you need a private tent, mosquito net, sleeping bag and pillow.

The 10-day expedition starts around 7 am by jeep in Bukit Lawang . The drive takes about 4 to 5 hours and leads over bumpy and partly muddy roads past Tangkahan to Lepan. There your trek begins as soon as you arrive (no further hotel stay). You will return the same way on the 10th day of the expedition.

All food in the jungle is prepared from fresh and local ingredients and tastes fantastic! Your team will bring all of the basic cooking ingredients from Bukit Lawang (rice, eggs, onions, chilli, noodles, tomatoes, etc.). Along the way you will collect the freshest rainforest ingredients to prepare later in camp, such as ferns, the insides of banana trunks, young bamboo or even freshly caught fish. There will also be biscuits to snack on (while stocks last), as well as tea and coffee.

Please let us know in advance if you or your fellow travellers have allergies or intolerances, or prefer a particular diet!
