Times are tough at the moment and money is short so the prospect of three rock giants Journey, Whitesnake and Thunder on one bill is enough to tempt open even the tightest of wallets.

Thunder, who recently reformed especially for this tour, were the perfect band to open the show.

In a set with absolutely no filler, Thunder delivered a greatest hits show that really set the ball rolling.

Lead singer Danny Bowes, with his cheeky Cockney charm took no time at all getting the crowd to their feet with Dirty Love and the Bad Company-like I Love You More Than Rock and Roll while their big ballad, Love Walked In, showed Bowes‘s voice had lost none of its edge.

With Thunder heading back into semi-retirement after this tour this could be the last chance to see them live until their busy schedules align and the right opportunity arises to tempt them back on stage together again but for now at least Newcastle lapped up the energy and enthusiasm from the stage.

With a lively opening from Thunder setting the bar high, Whitesnake had to hit the ground running and Give Me All Your Love did just that.  For a grandfather in his 60s David Coverdale has certainly weathered the ravages of time better than most.

Maybe it‘s the copious cups of tea he drinks or moving from Teesside to the beautiful Lake Tahoe in Sierra Nevada that has done the trick but whatever it is he should bottle it and flog it.

Doug Aldrich of Whitesnake

Although his voice at times can‘t quite reach the heights of yesteryear Coverdale more than makes up for it with his showmanship and charisma, which he has by the spadeful.

Coverdale dominates the huge stage making even those at the back feel part of the show. A real treat for vintage Whitesnake fans came when original guitarist  Bernie Marsden made a surprise appearance during Fool For Your Loving and a touching tribute to fallen past members Jon Lord, Cozy Powell and Mel Galley prior to Love Will Set You Free brought a tinge of sadness and celebration to the night.

With Whitesnake covering all eras of the band from the early days of Ready and Willing and Don‘t Break My Heart Again through the MTV big hair days of Is This Love and the bombastic Still Of the Night right to the title track from their latest Forevermore opus and everything else in between there was more than enough to keep everyone happy although a song or two from his Deep Purple days would surely have topped things off nicely.

The last occasion Journey played at the Metro Radio Arena, they were joined by melodic rock veterans Foreigner and Styx.  This time, with Thunder and Whitesnake breathing down their necks, Journey promised to showcase more of their Rock side pledging to leave most of their ballads back home.

There is no better way to start than the stomping Separate Ways (Worlds Apart) followed in quick succession by Chain Reaction and Ask The Lonely.  Journey were certainly true to their word with only mega ballad Open Arms, a truly stunning Faithfully and golden oldie Lights showing their lighter waving side.

With Neal Schon‘s guitar to the forefront along with keyboardist Jonathan Cain doubling up on guitar, Journey certainly packed a harder punch live than they do on record with a storming Edge of the Blade and Escape giving Schon plenty of scope to flex his fretboard skills.

Journey easily buried their soft rock reputation.

Sure the biggest cheer of the night greeted Don‘t Stop Believin’ but despite it being a tad overplayed in recent years, there‘s no denying its classic status.

Lead singer, Arnel Pineda‘s rise from rags to riches is a Hollywood writer‘s dream and to be able to fill the legendary Steve Perry‘s shoes was an unenviable task but Pineda‘s performance was utterly flawless.

Powerful, melodic and pitch perfect with energy and passion in abundance.

After almost four hours of music by three quality bands Coverdale‘s pre-show proclamation of giving the fans more bang for their buck certainly rang true and no-one left the arena feeling short changed.

REVIEW – JOURNEY, WHITESNAKE & THUNDER

whitesnake journey thunder tour

According to one popular reality television show it’s all about the voice. And given the fact that Danny Bowes, David Coverdale and Arnel Pineda barely missed a note in Newcastle it’s a point of view that’s difficult to contest.

All three were in sparkling form as the soft rock classics just kept on coming – Thunder’s Bowes setting the tone with his soulful, bluesy delivery, Whitesnake’s Coverdale countering with one of his most consistent performances in decades and Journey’s Pineda reinforcing his reputation as the AOR scene’s rising star.

However, with a who’s who of guitar heroes treading the boards on Tyneside the voices were just part of a sparkling package. And as the 80s anthems flowed the focus ultimately switched to the lords of the strings and a four-hour masterclass in fret-burning brilliance.

Luke Morley, Ben Matthews, Doug Aldrich, Reb Beach and Neal Schon nailed every solo and ripped through every riff. But there was more. Something few could have ever imagined or anticipated and a moment that will live with everyone present. When Whitesnake went back to the future and brought on Bernie Marsden to join the party, a collective gasp filled the rapt arena. Even the lads from Journey packed the wings for a better view of a genuine icon.

Marsden bravely shunned the shiny MTV-flavoured versions of Fool For You Lovin’ and Here I Go Again and took both songs back to where they started – his solo on the latter recalling the days before Coverdale became all-consumed with the trappings of fame, fortune and Tawny Kitean. It worked a treat before the shrill tones of Still Of The Night brought a triumphant close to the best Whitesnake show in decades.

Thunder 2013 Web By John Burrows @ishootgigs

Aldrich’s steely resolution had clearly rubbed off on local hero Coverdale – the Teessider overcoming a shaky start to lay to rest any lingering doubts about one of classic rock’s most revered voices. Forevermore , more than any other song on a setlist spanning 35 years, proved there’s plenty of life in the old dog yet.

But Thunder didn’t make it easy for Coverdale and co. to slip back into the comfort zone. The semi-retired bastions of bluesy British rock rifled through a 45-minute slot with Bowes’ idle banter juxtaposed alongside some seriously compelling music. A blistering version of Higher Ground brought the very best out of Morley and with Love Walked In any sceptics checked out. These days less is more where Thunder are concerned but their ‘national treasure’ status is assured.

Journey had it all to do as the final course of a sumptuous rock feast and they did it – in a thoroughly professional manner that occasionally bordered on the dispassionate. Pineda’s presence ensured a vibrant centerpiece to an uber-slick show but his band-mates consistently failed to follow the Filipino frontman’s exuberant lead. Nobody expected Schon and co. to match the band’s youthful singer stride for stride but an all-too static delivery from the band’s elder statesmen screamed indifference.

Jonathan Cain was the prime offender. Perhaps the multi-instrumentalist was buzzing behind that cool exterior but he looked like a musician going through the motions and dreaming of that cosy double bed at the lavish Malmaison.

Journey 2013 Web By John Burrows @ishootgigs

More confident than ever, the former karaoke singer engaged his audience, reached the high notes and utterly overshadowed his plodding colleagues. Pineda is still hungry: too many of Journey’s flag-bearers look like they’ve already had their fill.

Of course there’s still no finer sight or sound than the polished US titans belting out Ask The Lonely , Only The Young , Faithfully and the ubiquitous Don’t Stop Believin’ . Nobody does AOR better. But no amount of panache can compensate for a lack of passion.

Journey, whitesnake & thunder – motorpoint arena, sheffield, 20th may 2013.

Ant May 22 May 2013 Event Reviews

When you’ve spent three days at a music festival, it takes a special gig to make you want to go out the next night.  Fortunately for me, I was heading to such a gig after three days at Bearded Theory – the arena tour of Journey, Whitesnake and Thunder.  That’s what I call a great bill – three great bands with similar fan-bases, all together, so off I went to Sheffield.

Rating: 8/10

Thunder setlist:

Dirty Love Backstreet Symphony Higher Ground Low Life in High Places River of Pain The Devil Made Me Do It Love Walked In I Love You More Than Rock ‘N’ Roll

%%wppa%% %%slide=612%%

Rating: 9/10

Whitesnake setlist:

Give Me All Your Love Ready an’ Willing Can You Hear the Wind Blow Don’t Break My Heart Again Is This Love Gambler (dedicated to Mel Galley, Cozy … more) Love Will Set You Free Steal Your Heart Away Forevermore Best Years Bad Boys / Children of the Night Fool for Your Loving Here I Go Again Still of the Night

%%wppa%% %%slide=613%%

Finally came Journey.  Singer Arnel Pineda is the third great frontman of the night (although I’d probably rate him slightly lower than the other two in the frontman stakes but top in the vocal stakes), and leads Journey through a great set.  Where Whitesnake were rocky with rough edges, Journey have a much more polished sound, and things feel a lot less spontaneous.  Like Whitesnake they’ve got a great back catalogue to pick from, but for me, most of the songs just didn’t stand out from each other sufficiently.  It’s strange as I enjoy Journey, and they do everything right, but coming after Whitesnake it just seems to fall slightly flat.  I’d be interested to see how it worked with Journey playing before Whitesnake – I suspect it would work better.  This isn’t to say that Journey weren’t good – they really were great, but with more ballads and the far more polished sound then it just felt like a slight anticlimax to me after Whitesnake, but that’s just my opinion – the crowd certainly looked to be enjoying it.

Like Whitesnake they’ve tailored the setlist to suit an audience that isn’t exclusively made up of their fans, but the total omission of any songs from their last album (Eclipse) did surprise me.  Instead the ‘Escape’ album is heavily featured with four songs from the 1981 album featuring in tonight’s set, as is the ‘1983 ‘Frontiers’ album.  In fact the vast bulk of the set comes from the albums they released in the ’80s with just four or five songs from the rest of their long career. The end of the set got the crowd fully fired up and enthusiastic as they ended with ‘Dont stop believing’ – arguably the biggest song they’ve ever had partly thanks to it’s use in Glee, and then closed the night with an encore of ‘Any Way You Want It ‘.

This tour is a fantastic night out – three great bands, all with some great songs, and all for the same price you’d usually pay for one headliner and a mediocre support act at an arena.

Journey setlist:

Separate Ways (Worlds Apart) Ask the Lonely Only the Young Stone in Love Keep on Runnin’ Edge of the Blade Lights Open Arms Dead or Alive Just the Same Way Wheel in the Sky Be Good to Yourself Faithfully Don’t Stop Believin’ Any Way You Want It

Rock legends Journey,  Whitesnake and Thunder are set to tour together for the first time ever next year - and have announced a date at Birmingham’s LG Arena on Tuesday, May 28, 2013.

Journey, one of the most popular American rock bands of all time, are responsible for creating some of the best-known songs in modern music.

Over the years they have gained multiple accolades – including 19 Top 40 singles, 25 Gold and Platinum albums and single ‘Don’t Stop Believin’’ holding the number one digital catalogue song in history.

Recently they drew nearly a million fans to their 2011 Eclipse world tour which ranked in the Top 15 Tours of the year and were awarded the prestigious “Legend Of Live Award” at the 2011 Billboard Touring Awards.

Journey will be joining the tour with their current line-up of Neal Schon (guitars, backing vocals), Jonathan Cain (keyboards, backing vocals), Ross Valory (bass, backing vocals), Deen Castronovo (drums, percussion, backing vocals) and Arnel Pineda (lead vocals).

Journey said of the tour: “Looking forward to getting back to the UK and playing our best for you all. You guys are the very best, cheers and see you soon. We will be rocking!”

Co-headlining the 2013 tour are the legendary Whitesnake who carry a reputation as one of the world’s leading rock’n’roll bands.

Founded and formed by Deep Purple singer David Coverdale, the band have earned multi-platinum albums and multiple top 10 hits worldwide, including two number one singles with ‘Here I Go Again’ and ‘Is This Love’ as well as the unforgettable hammer of ‘Still Of The Night’.

Bombast, bravado, talent and passion have helped establish Whitesnake as the perennial platinum favourite they have become and they’re back with a vengeance in 2013, with plans to release a live DVD ahead of the tour as well as a double album.

“Unfinished business,” as Coverdale says slyly. “We all wanted the last tour to continue as we got closer to the end. After a year in the studio we're ready to rock on stage again. We’re coming back for more.”

Harnessing Coverdale’s blues and soul roots and fuelled by incendiary guitarists Doug Aldrich and Reb Beach, you have all the elements needed to shape the ‘Snake’s hard rock identity.

Special guests Thunder will also be appear on the LG Arena’s stage. In 2009 the band went their separate ways, only to return in 2011 for a triumphant live performance at the High Voltage festival in London, followed by 2 sell out Christmas shows.

Thunder returned for another two sell-out Christmas shows in 2012, with the date first selling out in just six hours. The band has been lured back on to the stage for next year’s tour with Journey and Whitesnake. Perhaps this could re-ignite their desire for more.

Singer Danny Bowes says: “We’d already discussed possibly doing some shows next year, so this is perfect, and it’s a great bill, like they used to be back in the day.

"Let’s face it, we could all do with a bit of cheering up at the moment, so hopefully the people who come will get a brilliant night out and go home happy. I’m sure we will".

For more information and to find out what’s coming up at the LG Arena, visit www.lgarena.co.uk.

Tickets for Journey/Whitesnake go on sale at 10am on Friday, 9 November, priced at £45 plus booking and transaction fees and are available from The Ticket Factory: www.theticketfactory.com or 0844 338 8000.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Whitesnake are a band hailing from Middlesbrough, Yorkshire, England who formed in 1978. They were one of the most popular British hard rock bands of the 1980’s and have released eleven studio albums with a twelfth coming in May 2015.

The band begins with lead singer David Coverdale, a singer who had shot to fame in 1974 as the lead singer of hard rock legends Deep Purple, however his time in the band was particularly fraught. A year after he joined the band, their lead guitarist, arranger and founding member Ritchie Blackmore quit as he felt they were losing sight of their hard rock origins. The band were sent into a tailspin by Blackmore’s departure but Coverdale took the reins, desperate to keep the band going. They recruited a new guitarist but the damage had been done, and the band’s third album with Coverdale at the helm, 1976’s “Come Taste The Band”, sank without a trace and they split soon afterwards.

Coverdale was heartbroken by Purple’s demise but he soldiered on, and he spent the rest of 1976 preparing his solo career. He released his solo debut in February 1977, an album called “White Snake” that wasn’t a massive success but it steadied his career with panache, and would set up a success that would dwarf his achievements in Deep Purple. The debut album had been made in collaboration with a guitarist named Micky Moody, and Coverdale toured the record with him and a backing band called The White Snake Band. However, the duo soon realized that they both thrived when working in a full band set up, rather than making solo records.

Just before the release of “Northwinds”, Coverdale took his White Snake Band, shortened their name to Whitesnake, and became their lead vocalist. He had already worked so closely with them that he felt far more comfortable as one of the boys in the band rather than the main star of the show. “Northwind” was released to a far better reception than Coverdale’s debut had gotten but he’d already moved on, performing Whitesnake’s first live shows and releasing their debut effort, the “Snakebite E.P”, in June 1978. “Trouble”, their debut album, came in the autumn of the same year, but their true breakthrough wouldn’t come until 1980 and the album “Ready An’ Willing”.

The album was their first to enter the top ten in the U.K and even gave the band a top twenty single in the form of “Fool For Your Loving”. At the dawn of the 1980’s, the band were stars in the U.K and most of Europe, but the band wouldn’t make waves in the States until 1984’s “Slide It In”. Released on the major label Geffen, the album went Gold in the U.S within a year of its release and produced two minor hits in the form of “Slow An’ Easy” and “Love Ain’t No Stranger”. However, no-one could have predicted just how stratospheric the band would go with the release of their next album, 1987’s appropriately titled “1987”.

The album went top ten on both sides of the Atlantic within a week of its release and would go on to sell eight million copies in the U.S alone, giving them a number one single on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Here I Go Again” to boot. Back in the U.K the band were nominated for a BRIT Award for Best British Group off the back of it but the album was a phenomenon in America, making them true Arena headliners for the first time in their career. Ever since then, the band have been one of the most respected acts in hard rock, with an envious back catalogue of bona-fide hits still able to bring an arena or a festival to its knees thirty years after their heyday. Coverdale is still a truly magnetic frontman, and the whole band still come highly recommended.

Live-Bewertungen

The story of David Coverdale - the lead singer and founder of Whitesnake - is an interesting one in rock and roll terms, if for no other reason that he has an admirable track record of having the courage of his convictions. After landing his dream gig as frontman of Deep Purple in 1973, things didn’t pan out quite as he would have hoped, with 1975 record Come Taste the Band failing to match up to expectations. He resigned as the band dissolved, and after releasing one solo album, White Snake, in 1977, knew that he needed to be in a band if he was to truly flourish. White Snake was born, and they’re still going strong today. Sound-wise, the band followed a very similar trajectory to Deep Purple; starting out bluesy, and quickly picking up hard rock sensibilities. They’re still going strong today, too, having released too albums - Good to Be Bad and Forevermore - since reforming in 2002, and their relentless touring is testament to the strength of their fanbase, having co-headlined both UK arenas and Download Festival with Def Leppard and, last year, revisited those same huge rooms for shows with Journey and Thunder. The quickfire nature of their sets on that tour meant they played nothing but hits; so distinguished is their back catalogue, though, that they could afford to mix it up a bit night after night.

Whitesnake, the British rock group who formed almost 40 years ago still have huge demand to be seen live due to the consistency of their recorded albums. Having accumulated fans at many stages of their career, the veterans' crowds are often made up of a huge range of ages. Their common ground is a love of Whitesnake and during the classic singles such as 'Can You Hear The Wind Blow' they become one thousand strong choir to support the band during the anthemic choruses.

Whitesnake remains unchanged in terms of stage show, they know the rock formula and what works well so by keeping gimmicks to a minimum and putting music to the centre they are able to showcase their musicianship. The instrumentals are definitely not wavering with time, as Tommy Aldridge in particular shows incredible skill with his drum kit.

The band performs a melodic mash-up of 'Best Years / Bad Boys / Children of the Night' in hope to please majority of the crowd as they simply have so much work to condense into one two hour show. They have clearly made a great choice to include 'Fool for Your Loving' as the crowd cheer rapturously.

flawless.....

from the opening of Burn to the end of Still of the Night, this is rock at it's best.

look at this lineup:david coverdale in fine form and voice. made the crowd feel more than welcome in his snakepit. reb beach: guitar slinger extroadinaire making faces and playing with total precision. joel Hoekstra: a fire power with a smile that never quits with more chops than a texas bar b que. Michael devin: bass playin, harmonica blowing thumper of a player. Italian keyboard player micheke luppi smiling and filling in all the gaps. oh, then there is this drummer, tommy Aldridge, that drives the snake while the rest hold onto the bumper. this man is unbelievable in power and technique.

songs range from classic snake to days of deep purple. I loved 'slide it in' and 'bad boys' to 'gypsy' and 'mistreated'.

I was fortunate after seeing them 9 times from the distance to be by the front of the stage and able to meet them afterwards by their bus.

the4y were very kind and made this 55 year old feel 18 again ! mike berry

Whitesnake, British hard rock legends from the 80s, still have a huge fan following today consisting of a whole range of ages. Hard core veterans to fresh faced fans littered the arena to watch Whitesnake perform, unified by their love of the band. Over the decades the band has released a number of hits off of 12 studio albums, the most recent of which was released in 2015. Due to their consistency and ability to shape their music to suit the age they were playing in, the band has retained their popularity, a popularity that soared to great heights in the 80s. The band has so many hits that almost all their songs on their set list were easily recognisable: from ‘Here I Go Again’ and ‘Is This Love’ to ‘Love Ain’t No Stranger’ and ‘Can You Hear the Wind Blow’, Whitesnake drove the crowd into a frenzy and had everybody singing along, our voices mingling into one exultant chorus in the name of Whitesnake. The energy was electric and lively all night.

Of Whitesnake, it was as always on top, the sound was perfectly balanced arrangements of the songs amazing, evident that the group is friendly staff very. gift set for the VIP, very much and is a t-shirt, a poster signed by David Coverdale, an album with the band's discography. VIP disappoint my place because they do not correspond to reality, people with back rows came and blocked the view of the scene, not to mention the fact that at the end of the concert all the back rows come to the VIP area and blocked the way out of the room, bathed in beer and behaved provocatively. Overall, the concert was super and I am filled with emotion from a meeting with my favorite band!

Standing room only crowd that were ready to rock on a Friday night. Nice indoor venue at Talking Stick Resort in Scottsdale. It is still way too hot for outdoor shows. Both the band and I were glad it was indoors.

White Snake played awesome and the band seemed to enjoy the show as much as we did. They definitely liked the big crowd. David Coverdale was fantastic but couldn't fight off the dry Arizona air and started to lose his voice a little at the end of the show. He fought through it well. A lot of singers have to put vaporizers on stage in Arizona to keep the moisture up.

show was very good. Opening band was better then expected ( had never heard their music -- but I will now def look to add them to my play list). Whitesnake --- 4th time seeing them and they ( no matter who is in the line up) always deliver. The only thing that was unbelievable was the cost of a beer ( nothing of course to do with the band ) but 13.50$ a beer ---WTF -- Never say never but I'm pretty sure I just saw my last show at the Aztec Theater.

The show was good. This was the first time, believe it or not, that I've seen Whitesnake. Granted Coverdale is 63, and he doesn't quite have the voice he once did, I still would have liked the volume of his singing a bit higher. The music sorta drowned him out. Also, many of their greatest songs that we all know were omitted from the set list. Then, two guitar and one drum solo, could've been left out. We still had a very good time.

this all hits show is just what you get all hits played to perfection. the band showed great stage presence and they were always having fun and enjoying them self's on stage.favorite moment was when david reached down and touched my hand during the performance, must have been god sent as i actually was blown/fell backwards at that moment, it was awesome...and yes they love to throw you picks so get your self upstage for this one!

These guys are awesome! David Coverdale's vocals aren't what they used to be sure, but he still sounds pretty amazing for his age. They sound great! They play the songs right on key, not a thing wrong! Joel Hoekstra and Reb Beach have good guitar chemistry on stage, it's freakin' awesome! Best show I've ever seen. Tommy is also still a great drummer, better than Don Brewer, that's for sure. Just see them, it's a must see show.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
  • The interval in the movement of trains in rush hour is  90 seconds .
