Major Snowstorm Descends Over Mountains Around Lake Tahoe

Meteorologists issued rare blizzard warnings as heavy snow halted travel and caused ski resorts and Yosemite National Park to close. The system also triggered a tornado.

A man on the deck of a fishing boat, and another on the roof, both wearing winter clothing, shovel snow.

By Jill Cowan ,  Julie Brown ,  Alex Hoeft and Megan Michelson

Jill Cowan reported from Los Angeles, Julie Brown and Alex Hoeft from Reno, Nev., and Megan Michelson from Tahoe City, Calif.

Residents hunkered down, ski resorts closed up shop, and snowplows hustled to clear roads as an enormous snowstorm descended on the Sierra Nevada on Friday, including the Lake Tahoe area, with as much as 12 feet of snow expected at the highest elevations and winds gusting over 100 miles an hour.

The Sierra Avalanche Center warned that the danger of avalanches was high for the Central Sierra. Officials at Yosemite National Park said the park would remain closed through noon on Sunday. Many ski resorts in the region announced that they were closing at least for the day.

The storm system triggered a rare tornado that touched down in Madera, in central California, damaging an elementary school while students were inside on Friday, said Brian Ochs, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Hanford.

As showers and heavy snow continued Friday evening, more than 57,000 California customers had no electricity, according to PowerOutage.us . In Tahoe City, where there were reports of brief power outages, the streets were mostly empty of cars as snow piled up the roadways. One resident, Tristan Queen, said he was planning to head to the grocery store by snowmobile.

“It’s definitely for the novelty, but sometimes it actually feels like a safer, smarter way to travel because then you’re not going on the roads and you’re letting the plows do their thing,” said Mr. Queen, 42, who runs a local belt company.

Meteorologists began sounding the alarms earlier this week about “life-threatening blizzard conditions” expected through Sunday in the Sierra Nevada, the huge and varied mountain range that runs along the spine of California.

On Friday evening a section of Interstate 80, a major artery through the Sierra, was closed indefinitely because of “spin outs, high winds, and low visibility,” the California Highway Patrol said.

By Thursday, forecasters were urging drivers to avoid traveling in the blustering winds with minimal visibility. “Your safe travel window is over in the Sierra,” the National Weather Service in Reno, Nev., posted on social media. “Best to hunker down where you are.”

One resort, Palisades Tahoe, said it had seen “intense” snowfall and winds of 100 miles an hour on Thursday night. In videos posted on social media by the resort, ski lifts were faintly visible through a blanket of white, and the sky and ground were indistinguishable from each other.

The resort, which was packed last weekend for a major ski competition, had become “an absolute ghost town” by Friday, said Veronica Berkholtz, a manager of the coffee shop at Palisades Tahoe. The resort said it would also be closed on Saturday.

Conditions were expected to continue deteriorating into the night as a cold front moved in, said Justin Collins, a meteorologist with the Weather Service in Reno. That could mean five more feet of snow on mountain crests, in addition to the snow that had already fallen.

He said that snow was expected to continue falling heavily on Saturday morning before “lightening up a little bit” in the afternoon.

Forecasters reserve blizzard warnings like the one that was in effect on Friday for only the most severe snowstorms. The Weather Service in Reno has issued only eight blizzard warnings in the last 12 years.

Forecast for severe winter weather Saturday

The last time there was a similar warning was almost exactly a year ago, when a powerful snowstorm dumped more than two feet of snow on the Lake Tahoe area in less than a day. The snow piled up so thickly on rooftops that when another storm threatened more snow and rain, residents had to scramble to shovel off enough weight to keep their roofs from caving in.

The same storm system caught officials and residents in the San Bernardino Mountains of Southern California off guard, trapping people for days in houses that were buried to the eaves in snow.

In the villages surrounding Lake Tahoe, residents and business owners say that they know how to prepare for lots of snow.

“It becomes part of the winter experience,” said Heather Svahn, the president of Mountain Hardware & Sports, a store in Truckee, Calif., that sells items including fishing gear, shovels and power tools.

Ms. Svahn said the store had arranged for extra supplies to be delivered earlier in the week, to avoid the most treacherous travel periods. Residents have been stopping into the store, she said, to buy shovels and shear pins, special bolts for snowblowers that are prone to breaking when the machines are used in heavy, wet snow conditions.

Shannon Parrish, the owner of Grocery Outlet, which has stores in Truckee and in Incline Village, Nev., said that both stores were open on Friday morning, but that the situation could change quickly. Deliveries were canceled for Friday and Saturday, she said, and employees who commute from Reno were told to stay home.

Ms. Parrish, who lives in Truckee, said eight to nine inches of snow had fallen at her house by Thursday night.

“It’s really quiet,” she said. “I think people are prepared to wait it out.”

But locals are also beginning to look ahead to this year’s ski season. Palisades Tahoe, the resort, announced that it would be open until the end of May.

“It’s just great fun,” said Dave Wilderotter, the owner of Tahoe Dave’s, a ski and snowboard shop with several locations in the area. “It’s just fun to be able to ski in the morning and golf in the afternoon.”

On Friday, a few visitors in Tahoe City got an early start, skiing in the backyard of a rental house before the storm worsened.

John Yoon contributed reporting.

Heading up to Tahoe this weekend? Here's best time to travel amid winter storm

Drew Tuma Image

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Traveling to Tahoe this weekend? Some days are better than others.

Folks trying to travel on Friday should use caution but should be OK getting to and from Tahoe. Much of Friday will feature rain, which could be heavy at times which will lead to slick roads and slower than normal travel times. At night especially, visibility will be reduced as these showers move through Northern California.

RELATED: 14 days of rain: Here's when the Bay Area may see a dry day

Do not try to travel to Tahoe on Saturday. As an atmospheric river takes aim at the Sierra, rain will be changing over to snow above 7,000' which means the passes will get coated in 1 to 2 feet of snow. Travel will be difficult and chain controls will most likely go into effect.

All of Sunday and Monday morning will be your best travel days with dry weather and partly cloudy skies. In the afternoon and evening on Monday use caution as another snowstorm will arrive which will drop snow levels to 5,000' where half a foot of snow is likely.

TIMELINE: Scattered showers before atmospheric river brings flood concerns Saturday

California monster blizzard batters Tahoe, Mammoth, Sierra amid avalanche warnings

The most powerful California blizzard of the season pounded the Sierra Nevada with gusts of up to 190 mph, while heavy snow Sunday forced the closure of key roads to the Lake Tahoe and Mammoth Mountain areas.

A rare blizzard warning was extended through Monday morning for the Lake Tahoe area, and until Sunday night for the Mammoth Mountain area. Key roads to Mammoth Mountain from Southern California, and to the northern Tahoe area from Sacramento and Reno, remained shut down Sunday afternoon.

Gusts greater than 100 mph were expected on the Sierra ridges through early Monday, according to the weather service. At Donner Pass along Interstate 80, an additional 18 inches of snow could fall through early Monday. Most of the new snow will fall from Highway 50 northward, which includes the Lake Tahoe region. Around Mammoth Lakes, south of the highway, another 1 to 4 inches could fall by Monday morning.

There could be a brief gap in new snowfall on Monday, but by nightfall and continuing into Tuesday, more snow could fall, mostly concentrated over the Sierra north of Highway 50.

Avalanche warnings remain in place through Sunday night.

For many hours Saturday and Sunday, the main road to Mammoth Mountain ski resort, U.S. 395, was shut down in both directions — to the south, toward Southern California, and to the north, toward Reno. The 75-mile stretch was closed from just northwest of Bishop in Inyo County to Bridgeport in Mono County, “due to multiple spinouts and collisions, as well as whiteout conditions,” the California Department of Transportation said . Late Saturday, the road to the south was reopened, but was again shut down overnight.

“High winds with speeds up to 60 mph are still creating whiteout conditions on the highway,” Caltrans said on social media just after 9 a.m. Sunday.

At 6 a.m. Saturday, Mammoth Mountain Ski Area reported it had received almost 2 feet of snow in some places. Two hours later, the resort said it was closing down for the day because of “extremely strong winds and blizzard conditions.”

A 50-mile stretch of Interstate 80 was shut down Friday afternoon over the Sierra, which was extended to a 75-mile section by Saturday morning, between Colfax and the Nevada state line. I-80 was still closed in both directions Sunday morning.

The Caltrans office in Kingvale, about 12 miles west of Truckee, lost power on Saturday, leading to the failure of its cameras and message boards.

“At this point, we are only allowing first responders and Caltrans employees on I-80. No essential big rigs, no ski resort employees,” Caltrans said on social media Saturday.

The highway was a mess. Overnight, “we had a mass amount of vehicles over Donner Summit and it took several hours for emergency vehicles and tow trucks to reach motorists,” the California Highway Patrol office in Truckee said Saturday morning.

“At one point, emergency personnel and tow trucks had a difficult time getting to motorists due to blizzard conditions,” the CHP said. Crews worked on removing vehicles abandoned on Interstate 80 after motorists were rescued.

A day earlier, multiple vehicles spun out and a big rig jackknifed .

A six-mile section of Highway 88 south of Lake Tahoe was also closed Sunday in both directions due to heavy snow. The closure extends from the west near Ham’s Station in Amado County to Picketts Junction in the east in Alpine County.

“We suggest you stay home,” the CHP said. “Stay warm and don’t put yourself and your family in a dangerous position.California monster blizzard batters Tahoe, Mammoth, Sierra amid avalanche warnings.

A portion of Highway 50 , which connects Sacramento and South Lake Tahoe, was closed for a period of time Sunday amid heavy snowfall. A “snow sluff” — an avalanche made of loose snow — trapped a few cars on Highway 50 for about a half an hour, and crews worked to pull vehicles out of the snow. No one was injured.

A child plays on a tall snowbank as snow falls north of Lake Tahoe.

A section of Highway 89 at Emerald Bay has also been shut, blocking the roadway that connects South Lake Tahoe and Tahoe City on the lake’s western shore.

A gust of 190 mph was detected Friday night at Palisades Tahoe at an elevation of 8,700 feet, according to the National Weather Service . Forecasters warned of extreme avalanche danger across the Tahoe region in the Sierra backcountry through Sunday afternoon.

Around Mammoth Mountain in Mono County, peak winds clocked in at 114 mph Friday afternoon.

The record in California for the fastest wind gust verified by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration was 199 mph on Feb. 20, 2017, at Ward Mountain, also known as Ward Peak, at Palisades Tahoe.

Forecasters urged people to stay where they are unless there’s an emergency, and warned that it could take time for plows to dig out communities. Meteorologists say the storm, which could dump up to 12 feet of snow in the highest elevations of California’s mightiest mountain range by Sunday, might result in one of the top 10 snowiest days of the central Sierra since 1970.

“Conditions in the Sierra will be treacherous through Sunday morning with life-threatening travel,” the weather service said.

The crest of the Sierra overall is expected to get 6 to 10 feet of snow; Mammoth Lakes, 2 to 4 feet; and the Tahoe Basin, 3 to 6 feet. Snow has been falling steady at about 2 inches per hour, with intermittent rates of 3 to 4 inches per hour, the weather service said, which should peak late Saturday.

The UC Berkeley Central Sierra Snow Lab had received 3 feet of snow by Saturday morning, and expected several more feet by Monday morning.

Mammoth’s ski resort forecast a high of 15 degrees Saturday and, besides the blizzard, forecast “thundersnow,” in which lightning can occur within a snowstorm.

“Light, fluffy snow will be easily blown around, creating whiteout conditions with near-zero visibility at times,” the weather service office in Reno said. For those who do venture out, “pack an emergency kit and prepare to be stranded in your vehicle for an extended period of time.”

Sophie Abadilla at Footloose Sports, a ski shop in Mammoth Lakes, said she had been forced to walk to work rather than drive because of the storm. Although the town usually quickly clears sidewalks during storms, she still had to trudge through more than a foot of snow, she said.

With the ski resort closed Saturday, the shop was busy with tourists, Abadilla said. “They say, ‘We’re tired of staying in our hotel room watching the same movies.’”

At the same time, local residents were avoiding shopping or even going out because of the dangerous conditions. “We just want to stay home,” she said.

Despite the storm, the Mammoth Film Festival scheduled through Monday continued with its schedule, said Tanner Beard, the event’s co-founder.

Caltrans workers assisted, Beard said, when some people expected to work at a festival event got stuck in Bishop and were able to follow behind snow plows up the mountain to get to Mammoth Lakes.

Beard said it was the third blizzard to hit at the time of the annual film festival in the last six years.

“Nothing will stop filmmakers,” he said. “The show must go on.”

Palisades Tahoe ski resort, located northwest of Taho City, said its ski lifts were closed Sunday “due to intense weather conditions.”

An employee at Alpine clears snow. The resort was closed on March 1 due to the blizzard.

With blizzard pounding Tahoe area, even some ski resorts are urging people to stay away

Local officials and law enforcement are urging people to stay off the road and not travel during what could be a life-threatening blizzard.

March 1, 2024

The rare blizzard warning issued by the National Weather Service office in Reno will last through Sunday morning. The blizzard warning extends from Lassen Volcanic National Park in Shasta County to Kings Canyon National Park in Fresno County.

Blizzard warnings for the Sierra Nevada are typically issued about every other year.

There should be a bit of a lull starting Sunday morning, but there will still be chances of snow showers that will continue into Wednesday, the weather service said, especially for the Sierra north of Highway 50. Drier weather is expected after that.

Thousands of customers in the Tahoe area were without power Saturday, according to the Truckee Donner Public Utility District and Liberty Utilities .

Other areas of California are also forecast to be affected by the strong winter storm. A stretch of Interstate 5 in Siskiyou County, near the Oregon border, could get more than 1 foot of snow.

And Highway 101 in Mendocino, Humboldt and Del Norte counties could see snowfall. Highway 101 at Ridgewood Summit in Mendocino County could get up to 1 foot of snow; at Prairie Creek Summit in Humboldt County, up to 1.5 feet; and south of Crescent City in Del Norte County, about half a foot of snow.

Some 6 to 12 inches of snow could fall in Yosemite Valley — the most popular part of Yosemite National Park, the National Weather Service office in Hanford said. A winter storm warning was in effect through Sunday morning.

A more intense blizzard warning was already in effect for the rest of Yosemite National Park outside of Yosemite Valley, which will last through Sunday morning.

Some 2 to 3 feet of snow could fall at the Big Oak Flat entrance to Yosemite National Park along Highway 120, a route often taken by travelers from the San Francisco Bay Area.

Along Highway 41, a route to the park often taken by those from Fresno and Southern California, 3 to 5 feet of snow could fall at the entrance to the park, around Mariposa Grove. At the historic Victorian-era Wawona Hotel, 3 to 6 feet of snow could fall.

High avalanche danger, winds topping 100 mph as blizzard slams Tahoe, Mammoth, Sierra Nevada

A treacherous, life-threatening blizzard hitting Lake Tahoe and Mammoth is expected to peak Friday night into Saturday. Yosemite National Park was ordered shut.

The winter storm was expected to be more mild for Southern California. The wettest period of the weekend was expected Saturday, but there’s still a chance of rain Sunday.

Still, there could be “isolated and brief bursts of heavy rain likely through Saturday night,” mainly in the foothills and coastal slopes, the weather service office in Oxnard said. There is the potential for mudslides and rockslides on canyon roads and below steep hillsides, and ongoing land movement in recent landslide areas.

For the weekend storm, downtown L.A. could get 0.6 of an inch of rain; Long Beach, 0.44 of an inch; Pomona, 0.74 of an inch; Pasadena, 1.33 inches; Santa Clarita, 0.77 of an inch; Oxnard, 0.65 of an inch; and Santa Barbara, 0.92 of an inch.

San Diego could get up to 0.2 of an inch; Irvine, San Clemente and Riverside could get up to 0.3 of an inch; Anaheim, up to 0.4 of an inch; Ontario and Temecula, up to 0.7 of an inch; and San Bernardino, up to 1 inch.

The San Francisco Bay Area encountered thunderstorms Friday night, and more rain arrived Saturday. Cities in the Bay Area were generally forecast to get between 1 and 1.5 inches of rain through Sunday.

Four people were hurt in San Francisco on Friday evening when a tree fell on their car at Golden Gate Avenue and Laguna Street, firefighters said .

Lake Tahoe Ski Resort Reporting 150+mph Wind Gusts

K irkwood Ski Resort, CA, is one of the more wind-prone mountains in these northeast wind events and has been reported to see gusts of up to 150+ mph this morning, according to Tahoe Daily Snow.

See their data in a tweet published earlier today, below.

Tahoe Daily Snow is betting no one wants to ski in these conditions, saying, the guest would put wind chills in the -20s - 30s with temperatures around 10 degrees. But if that isn't enough, the weather forecasting service writes that "you'd also blow away if you were up there."

The Chair 6 station shows recorded gusts of 126-150 mph over the course of Thursday's early morning.

Kirkwood's terrain, spread between 2,300 acres of terrain, with 2,000 feet of vertical drop, ranges from mellow groomers to intense chutes, cornices, and cliffs.

The ski area also spans multiple peaks including Martin Point, Covered Wagon, Glove Rock, The Sisters, and Thimble.

This is hardly the first time Kirkwood has seen extreme wind. In 2020, ABC10 and the National Weather Service teamed up to examine whether or not the reported 209 mph gust at the resort was legit.

Watch below.

At around 9100 feet, the sensor at Chair 6 at Kirkwood has seen remarkably high numbers for wind speeds. The reporter noted that Alpine Meadows also sees high winds at similar vertical heights.

While the 209 mph gust was thought to be  likely an error , as the reporter noted in the above video, Kirkwood does indeed see strong winds. Today was no exception.

It is also worth noting that almost 200 mph winds are not unthinkable. There stands a 199-mph record for the fastest-ever recorded wind in California, measured on Ward Mountain in Palisades .

Powerful winds gusting up to 100 mph cause travel delays and power outages in Northeast

A satellite image of the Northeast United States on March 11, 2024.

Around 52 million people remain under wind alerts Monday afternoon across the Northeast, from Maryland to Maine.

Mount Washington, New Hampshire, experienced the highest peak wind gusts of the day at 109 mph.

Philadelphia recorded 63 mph wind gusts, while Newark, New Jersey, saw 59 mph and Providence, Rhode Island, reached 53 mph. Boston winds gusted 46 mph.

Power outages have been reported in parts of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York and New Hampshire.

The strong winds should relax this evening, and most wind alerts should expire late tonight or overnight.

On Monday, 62 million people woke up under wind advisories and high wind warnings stretching from Maine to the mountains of western North Carolina.

For areas under wind alerts, Monday's winds were forecast to be sustained at 25 to 35 mph with gusts as high as 50 to 60 mph.

These high wind forecasts included the heavily traveled I-95 corridor and large airport hubs in the Washington-Baltimore region, Philadelphia International Airport, the major tri-state airports (Newark, LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy) and Boston Logan.

Travel delays are likely at the airports until the winds subside, which is not expected to occur until winds go below wind advisory criteria overnight Monday into Tuesday morning.

Downed trees and power outages are also expected to be impacts from Monday's high winds across the eastern states.

In addition to the high winds, light to moderate snow was expected to fall across the interior Northeast and New England through Monday night.

Winter storm warnings were up for the northern Adirondacks of upstate New York and parts of Vermont and northern New Hampshire.

Additional snow totals are expected to be generally 4 to 8 inches, with some isolated totals as high as 10 inches or more in spots.

Monday's wind and snow comes in the wake of a storm system that brought soaking rains to the southeast Friday into Saturday and the mid-Atlantic and Northeast Saturday into Sunday.

Following the weekend rainfall, Cape Hatteras, North Carolina; Norfolk, Virginia; Philadelphia; New York City; Bridgeport, Connecticut; and Providence, Rhode Island, are now having their wettest start to March on record.

And m ore than 80 river gauges from the southeast to coastal New England remained in minor to moderate flood stage as of midmorning Monday.

Hampton Beach, New Hampshire, was the area hardest-hit by flooding over the weekend, when strong onshore winds pushed water into the community, cutting off roads and inundating homes. This area is highly vulnerable to coastal flooding, with this being the second time in 2024 that the area has flooded.

Weather | Colorado weather: Heavy snow hits Denver, Front Range; “major impacts” expected for metro area

“don’t travel if you don’t have to over the next 24 to 36 hours,” cdot warns.

People takes a walk with dog ...

Editor’s note : This story will no longer be updated; see all of our current weather coverage here , including the forecast , road closures , snow totals and delays/cancellations at DIA .

A winter storm set to pummel the Front Range and metro Denver with several feet of snow will arrive in force Thursday, shuttering schools and government offices and making travel dangerous or altogether impossible.

More than 4 feet of snow is expected in parts of the Front Range mountains and foothills, with large sections seeing 18 inches to 36 inches of snow, National Weather Service forecasters said Wednesday.

Metro Denver is forecast to see 10 inches to 20 inches of snow, with up to 2 feet falling in the western suburbs.

The Front Range mountains and foothills and the Interstate 25 corridor south of Longmont to Colorado Springs can expect major or extreme impacts from the storm, including dangerous or impossible driving conditions, scattered power outages and widespread closures, according to the National Weather Service . People should only travel in an emergency and bring a winter survival kit in case they become stranded.

The storm rolled into the mountains Wednesday afternoon and snow was forecast to start falling in Denver by 10 p.m. at a rate of 1 inch to 2 inches per hour, according to the agency.

Government officials and utility providers began preparing for the storm Wednesday before the first flakes had fallen, announcing office and school closures and warning residents of possible service disruptions and treacherous driving conditions.

Residents can report power outages and downed power lines to Xcel Energy online at my.xcelenergy.com or by calling 1-800-895-1999, the company said in a news release Wednesday. Nearly 165 employees and crew members will be on call statewide to respond to outages and restore electric and natural gas service.

People should stay away from downed power lines and always assume they’re energized and dangerous, Xcel officials said. Residents should also keep natural gas meters clear to prevent natural gas buildup indoors.

City and county governments announced sweeping closures ahead of the storm on Wednesday, including canceled classes for Denver Public Schools, Jeffco Public Schools, Littleton Public Schools, Englewood Public Schools, Westminster Public Schools, Cherry Creek School District, Adams 12 Five Star Schools, Adams County School District 14 and Douglas County School District. The University of Colorado Boulder also canceled in-person and some online classes.

Government offices across the metro area are also closed Thursday , including Denver, Denver County Courts, Englewood, Littleton, Sheridan, Centennial and Thornton, and state lawmakers announced they were also taking a snow day, canceling sessions in the Colorado Senate and House of Representatives.

Even if a government office or school remains open Thursday, roads may be extremely difficult or impossible to navigate and residents should plan to stay home, Colorado Department of Transportation officials said Wednesday.

State transportation officials anticipate safety closures on major highways during the storm, including Interstate 70 between Golden and the Eisenhower Tunnel, I-25 between Castle Rock and Colorado Springs and U.S. 285 between C-470 and Fairplay, said CDOT Maintenance & Operations Director John Lorme.

“Don’t travel if you don’t have to over the next 24 to 36 hours,” Lorme said.

Road closures can be triggered by winds over 15 mph causing low visibility for drivers and plows, he said.

Hazardous road conditions in the mountains and foothills could last into Friday as residents and road crews start to dig out from the storm, Lorme added.

Impassable roads may hinder emergency responders trying to rescue stranded drivers, said Colorado State Patrol Chief Col. Matt Packard, though rescue teams will work through the storm when possible.

CDOT is “all hands on deck” for the storm, deploying virtually all of the state’s 875 snow plows and 100 pieces of heavy equipment for the storm, spokesperson Matt Inzeo wrote in an email.

Teams near the Utah and Kansas borders will shift toward the center of the state to cover the full storm area while surge teams will respond to the hardest-hit areas, particularly the foothills throughout the Front Range, Inzeo said.

The agency will keep approximately 100 plows in the Denver metro and another 33 to 35 plows on I-70 between Golden and the Eisenhower Tunnel, though those numbers will change.

“Our crews will work 12.5-hour shifts that started (Wednesday) afternoon, and we will stay at this tempo until the storm clears and every travel lane is clear,” Inzeo wrote.

In Denver, 50 large plows are ready to deploy and 36 residential plows will hit the streets at 3 a.m. Thursday, city officials said in a news release. Residential plows will take a single pass down the center of each side street at least once every 24 hours.

Residential plows are not trying to clear side streets down to bare pavement, but rather to skim off the top layers of snow, preventing significant icing or rutting in the roadways, city officials said.

Front Range residents relying on public transportation to get around Thursday should also be ready for treacherous conditions, delays and slower travel times, Regional Transportation District officials said Wednesday. Access-a-Ride customers should expect delays and consider rescheduling trips, RTD officials said in a news release.

Denver is mobilizing a “Tier 4” response to the storm, which is the highest priority storm response in the city’s protocols, Mayor Mike Johnston said at a news conference Wednesday afternoon at the City and County Building.

“Obviously, we know this is going to be a big storm, and Denver is ready,” Johnston said, standing alongside the city’s police chief, fire chief, sheriff and other key officials.

It’s been at least two or three years since Denver has mobilized in a Tier 4 response, said Amy Ford, the new mayor’s appointee in charge of the city’s Department of Transportation and Infrastructure, pending City Council approval.

Johnston highlighted several precautions the city government is taking ahead of the storm, including having all nonessential city staff work from home on Thursday, pausing the time limits some migrants may be nearing on their stays in city shelters and opening a warming center in the Glenarm Recreation Center, at 2800 Glenarm Place in Five Points.

While Denver city offices, libraries and recreation centers are closed, 24-hour services will operate on regular schedules, including police, trash, traffic, 311 and emergency shelters, city officials said in a news release.

“Most importantly of all, the St. Patrick’s Day parade will still be happening on Saturday, and I will be there,” Johnston said.

Denver Post reporters Nick Coltrain and Seth Klamann contributed to this report.

Heavy snow slams Colorado as severe thunderstorms unleash torrential rain across Midwest

A powerful winter storm walloped Colorado on Thursday with heavy snowfall, closing schools, knocking out power and canceling hundreds of flights as thunderstorms threatened the Midwest and Mississippi Valley with potentially damaging hail and tornadoes.

In what experts say could be the worst winter storm the state has seen in years, officials have warned of whiteout conditions on Colorado's mountain roads and across a large portion of the Denver and Boulder metro areas. Sections of major highways, including I-70, have been shut down and authorities have asked people to stay indoors.

Throughout the day and into Friday, up to 3 feet of snow is expected across the Front Range, Sangre de Cristo and San Juan mountain ranges, according to the National Weather Service . Snow will also pile up locally, including in downtown Denver, where officials have opened multiple shelters and warming centers.

"Our city hasn't seen a storm like this in a few years," wrote Denver Mayor Mike Johnston in a post on X Wednesday , shortly before announcing the closure of county and city government offices through Friday, when the storm will begin to taper off.

More than 79,000 utility customers were out of power, Thursday morning according to a database maintained by USA TODAY . And over 800 flights at Denver International Airport have been canceled, according to FlightAware .

Storms threaten tornadoes and large hail across the Midwest

Meteorologists say potential tornadoes and large hail threaten parts of north-central Texas into the Midwest as storms move east over the area Thursday. The greatest overall threat is across eastern Oklahoma, Arkansas and southern Missouri, according to the weather service .

The weather service also issued severe weather warnings across central Illinois as storms with winds of over 50 mph were recorded in the region. Flights at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport were temporarily grounded because of heavy rain and winds.

These storms dropped hail ranging in size from golf balls to baseballs as they moved east across parts of Missouri and Kansas on Tuesday and Wednesday.

They grew to encompass states from northeastern Texas to central Illinois and western Ohio, according to Accuweather , which said major metro areas at risk for severe weather and possible tornadoes Thursday include St. Louis, Dallas, Memphis, Indianapolis, Dayton in Ohio, and Peoria, Illinois.

The threat of severe thunderstorms will decrease by Friday before heading into the Northeast, according to the weather service. By then northern New England and New York State will face rain, while the higher elevations could see snow.

Baseball-size hail slammed Kansas and Missouri

Hail the size of baseballs fell on parts of Kansas and Missouri on Wednesday, including some major metro areas such as Kansas City, stalling traffic as several powerful storms kicked up possible tornadoes.

Across multiple counties there were at least three unconfirmed reports of tornadoes across both states as well as reports of structure damage. The National Weather Service said survey teams would confirm reports on Thursday. One video circulating online appeared to show a massive tornado moving across Kansas overnight .

While the hail threat lessens Thursday, meteorologists said heavy rain and high winds were still possible from northeastern Texas through central Missouri.

LA landslide destroys 1 home, threatens others

A landslide in an expensive Los Angeles neighborhood destroyed one home that was under construction and threatened the structural integrity of several others, authorities said.

Just before 3 a.m. Wednesday, Los Angeles firefighters responded to a call about a large tree and several wires down in the backyard of a house in Sherman Oaks, less than 15 miles from downtown LA, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department . Upon arrival, they found a hillside had slid toward three homes, damaging several and completely flattening one that was being renovated.

No one was hurt in the incident, but several people evacuated from one house. Two residences have been red tagged, meaning the structures are unsafe to enter, and another has been yellow tagged, according to the Department of Building and Safety. Firefighters used pumps to remove water from a swimming pool in the area to take some additional weight and stress off the hillside.

Pictures of the damage show one house completely flattened, another with its pool and deck pulled away, and a third with a pool hanging over the edge of the hillside.

Officials have not identified the cause of the landslide. This year, Los Angeles has had more than twice the amount of rain than normal, and over 600 mudslides have been reported in the city as of early February.
