Culture and customs.

Japan is a multifaceted country made up of many different cultures, rituals, and traditions influenced by Confucianism (introduced in AD285), Buddhism (introduced in AD552), and Shintoism (Japan’s ritualistic native religion). The rise of technology and international trendsetting has also played a part in the culture of Japan today as the younger generation embraces fashion-forwardness, online personas, and high-tech gadgets.

This is in direct contrast to the Confucian-influenced, old-school Japanese culture that the older generations still live by, with a larger emphasis on modesty, respect, and discipline. This can sometimes cause conflict between the two demographics, however, there are still some traditions that are considered sacred regardless of age – tea ceremonies, bowing, kendo, geisha, and sumo.

History and government

Japan has had an interesting past with its ancient history, pre-modern history, and 20th-century history, all influencing the country we all know and love today.

Ancient history

While there is evidence the archipelago has been occupied by humans for around 35,000 years, what we know now as ‘Japan’ began to take shape about 1700 years ago as disparate tribes started to unify.

Pre-modern history

Over the centuries, Japan has alternated between feudal, empirical, religious, and government rule, with each period birthing different styles of art, architecture, and spirituality. Buddhism and Confucianism, introduced in 552 BC and AD 285, respectively, both proved massively influential on the class structures and governance of pre-modern Japan. You can still visit and stay in many Buddhist temples in Japan today.

20th century

It’s difficult to discuss the emergence of modern Japan without talking about WWII. During the war, the Empire of Japan used aggressive military tactics in an attempt to expand its reach and control in Asia and elsewhere. In response, the US Army instigated a strategic bombing campaign that included the notorious use of nuclear weapons in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The result of these attacks was mass human and structural devastation.

These bombings, along with depleted armed forces and the looming threat of invasion from the Soviet Union, led the Empire of Japan to surrender unconditionally to the Allies in September 1945.

The ‘Empire of Japan’ became ‘Japan’ as part of the extensive terms of surrender, and the nation faced the prospect of rebuilding and reinventing itself in the second half of the 20th century.

Reflect on the historic and sobering sites of Hiroshima and Nagasaki while on an 24 day Ultimate Japan tour.

After WWII, Japan found its feet operating as a free-market economy based around the manufacture and export of automobiles and electronics, experiencing particularly rapid growth between 1960 and the late 1980s. The late 20th century saw the country emerge as an economic superpower, and with that came the flourishing of several cultural sectors, such as the arts and cuisine.

Experience Japan's historic sites on a 13 day Land of the Rising Sun tour.

Top places to visit in Japan

One minute you’re walking through a former black-market quarter, the next, you’re paying your respects at a 1400-year-old temple. Eclectic Tokyo is an essential part of any visit to Japan. Wander through the streets of Tokyo on our 12 day Classic Japan tour.

If you’ve ever eaten at a sushi train restaurant, you’ve got the underrated city of Osaka to thank! The motto in this city is 'kuidaore', which roughly translates as ‘eat until you drop’ . You can consider that a (friendly) order. Experience Osaka on our 12 day Japan Family Holiday.

The home of temples, palaces, and the Gion district (where geisha live and work), Kyoto is also where you’ll find the famed Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine. Spot Geisha in Kyoto on our 9 day Japan Express tour.

4. Kanazawa

A great place to see a slice of old Japan, with classic sculpted gardens, a restored Old Town, and well-preserved architecture from a variety of eras. Explore Kanazawa on our 11 day Cycle Japan tour or on our 10 day Essential Japan adventure.

5. Hiroshima

Most travelers visit Hiroshima to see the Peace Memorial Park, constructed around the hypocentre of the atomic bomb that destroyed the city in 1945. Follow this up with nearby Miyajima, a tranquil island where tame deer roam the streets.

6. Yudanaka

This quaint resort town is best experienced in the winter, when snow coats the normally evergreen trees and Japanese macaques come down from the mountains to bathe and groom each other in the steaming natural hot springs of Jigokudani (Hell Valley).

Geography and environment

Japan is an archipelago of more than 6000 islands located in the Pacific Ocean in Asia . The main islands are Hokkaido, Honshu, Kyushu and Shikoku. Lying on the Pacific Ring of Fire, Japan is prone to destructive earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic activity. The most famous volcano, Mount Fuji , is also Japan's highest peak and only 100km from Tokyo.

Japan has plenty of forested, mountainous terrain that is unsuitable for agriculture and development, so much of the population lives in the coastal cities. This has led Japan to become one of the most densely populated countries in the world and the majority of its inhabitants are used to living in very small spaces, with a heavy reliance on public transport.

Although life is fast-paced and crowded in cities like Tokyo and Osaka, rural areas typically feature low-density, traditional housing and a slower pace of life surrounded by greenery such as lush forests and plenty of moss-covered boulders.

Traverse mountains, cycle coastlines, and meander through forests on a 12 day Japan: Hike, Bike and Kayak tour.

Shopping in Japan is fun but expensive, so be sure to have a budget for souvenirs planned in advance! In cities like Tokyo, there are loads of quirky stores and funky galleries showcasing the works of independent fashion designers and gadget creators. From the outlandish to the kitsch, you're guaranteed to find loads of colorful clothing and edgy art that you won't be able to find elsewhere.

If you’re planning to bring back leaf tea or any other perishable or edible items, it's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand, in particular, have strict quarantine laws.

What to buy

  • Kimonos This quintessential Japanese souvenir looks great hung on the wall as an interesting decorative piece. If you plan on wearing one, make sure you do so respectfully and learn the correct way to fold the garment.
  • Paper lanterns, kites and fans Japanese paper goods make great, relatively inexpensive souvenirs. Choose from high-quality, traditionally-made kites or delicate rice paper lanterns.
  • Electronics Shops in Japan are bursting with the latest tech gadgets. Just be sure to check that they are compatible for use at home.
  • Fashion Have fun with the amazing diversity of popular street culture fashion available in Japan. Vibrant, brash and sometimes bizarre – find something that no one back at home will be wearing.
  • Anime and manga paraphernalia Another inexpensive gift option, even for people who can’t read Japanese. Pick up a book, magazine, t-shirt or print from one of Japan’s many anime and manga stores.

Festivals and events

If you want an adventure with a point of difference, consider planning your travels to coincide with these popular festive events in Japan.

Sapporo Winter Festival

Held every February since 1950, this festival features hundreds of statues and ice sculptures, snow slides and mazes, regional food and artistic performances. Winter in Japan is truly amazing, and the Sapporo Winter Festival is a magical way to celebrate.

Hadaka Matsuri

Head to Okayama to watch thousands of men wearing nothing but loincloths vie to touch the chosen 'naked man'. It may look like a bizarre male-bonding exercise but it's actually a historic cleansing ritual dating back thousands of years. Dates change yearly.

Fuji Rock Festival

Held annually in the stunning surroundings of the Naeba Ski Resort, this outdoor music festival is huge and draws in big-name acts and local bands Thousands of music lovers flock to Naeba for three days of camping, music and partying in the summer months.

Tipping isn't customary in Japan and is not expected – in fact, it will sometimes be considered impolite. Some inns or ryokans may leave a small envelope in your room where a small gratuity can be left for housekeeping staff.

What is the internet access like in Japan?

Internet access is excellent in Japan, with one of the most developed high-speed internet networks in the world. Internet cafes and wi-fi hotspots are easily found in most cities and major towns.

Cell phone coverage is excellent in Japan but be aware that talking loudly on your phone in public places (like in train carriages) is frowned upon. You will be expected to hide your mouth behind your hand if you must take a call in public. If you want to use your cell phone, ensure global roaming is activated before you arrive (but be aware of the fees this may incur).

What are the toilets like in Japan?

In Japan, toilets range from high-tech bidets to standard western-style flushable toilets to squat toilets, which are still common outside the city. Sometimes you may need to pay for toilet paper, which can usually be purchased from a vending machine nearby.

When is the best time to travel to Japan?

There’s never a bad time to travel to Japan but the months that see the most travelers are March, April, and May as the weather is mild and the cherry blossoms are in full bloom. The warm weather (with low humidity levels) of September, October, and November are also suitable months to visit Japan – you’ll even be treated to landscapes colored with oranges, reds, and browns for autumn. While winter can be cold, this is the best time for snow activities such as skiing, snowboarding, and snow festivals. On the other hand, the summer months see high humidity levels that can leave some travelers uncomfortable.

What is the weather like in Japan?

  • Spring (March to May): temperatures range from 50 to 68°F, with conditions getting sunnier and clearer towards the end of the season.
  • Summer (June to August): temperatures range from 70 to 90°F depending on where you are. It’s warmer in the south than in the north. You can expect some rain in June, and it can get quite humid towards the end of the season.
  • Fall (September to November): temperatures range from 45 to 68°F. The humidity starts to calm down in September, but days stay warm until October. Nights can be chilly.
  • Winter (December to February): break out the coats, temperatures during winter range from 32 to 59°F. The mountains and the north experience snowfall .

How safe is Japan?

Japan is generally safe and is rated among the safest countries in the world. Reports of crime such as theft are very low and travelers are often stunned by the fact that locals leave belongings unaccompanied in cafes and bars (though we certainly don’t recommend it!).

Is Japan safe for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

LGBTQIA+ travelers shouldn’t have any issues visiting Japan with violence, outright hostility or overt discrimination extremely rare. However, Japan’s older generation still holds conservative values when it comes to LGBTQIA+ sexuality and non-binary gender expression, especially those that live in regional areas.

Same-sex relationships are considered legal in some districts (such as Tokyo); however, same-sex marriage hasn’t been legalized yet. Public displays of affection are often frowned upon, regardless of sex, gender, or sexual orientation so keep that in mind when you’re out in public.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting  Equaldex  or  ILGA  before you travel.

Is Japan accessible for travelers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

The needs of travelers with mobility issues, including wheelchair users, are considered in the infrastructure in major cities. Train stations have lifts (elevators), wide turnstiles and (for the most part) raised platforms so that wheelchair users can glide onto the train without being assisted.  Sidewalks in Japanese cities are sometimes sloped towards the road, which can make traveling a straight line difficult for wheelchair users or people with vision impairment.

It is common practice in Japan to remove shoes when entering a home. Wheelchair users should carry something to wipe down their wheels in respect of this custom. Apply the same logic for other mobility aids such as canes.

Ryokans and other traditional accommodation can be difficult to navigate for people with limited mobility, but accessible hotel options are plentiful in the major cities.

Travelers with vision impairment may find the tactile yellow strips that guide the way to various places in train stations helpful, though please note that there is no barrier between the train tracks and platforms.

If you have a battery-operated hearing aid, it’s a good idea to bring extra batteries or familiarise yourself with the Japanese equivalent of the batteries it takes.

If you do live with a visual, hearing or other impairment, let your booking agent or group leader know early on so they’re aware and suitable arrangements can be made. As a general rule, knowing some common words in the local language, carrying a written itinerary with you and taking to the streets in a group, rather than solo, can help make your travel experience the best it can be.

What should I wear in Japan?

Summer months can be incredibly hot and sticky, so loose, lightweight and breathable clothing is essential.

Spring and autumn can be crisp and cold, so you might want to pack thermal layers in addition to your coat and boots.

Outside of Hokkaido and the mountains, the winter temperatures in Japan are manageable as long as you have regular cold-weather clothes like a good coat, pair of gloves, a winter hat and a scarf.

The style of dress common for women in Japan may be a little more covered up than you are used to, particularly outside the major cities.

Packing comfortable trousers is essential as you may find yourself sitting cross-legged on the floor during your stay.

What are some common phrases/words I should learn before my trip to Japan?

  • 'hello' - Konnichiwa
  • 'good morning' - Ohayō
  • 'thank you' - Arigatou Gozaimasu

Journey across Japan in the blink of an eye on a bullet train journey from Kyoto to Hiroshima, then take your time pondering the powerful monuments of Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park.

Greet the local deer at Itsukushima Shrine on the island of Miyajima, sit in quiet contemplation at Kenroku-en – one of the ‘Three Great Gardens of Japan’ – and listen to the playful winds as they make music, knock together towering bamboo stalks in the groves of Arashiyama. Enjoy the sweeping landscapes from your private transportation, and make the most of your expert tour guide’s extensive local knowledge with entrance to some of Japan’s most beloved temples and museums. With handpicked hotels to ensure comfort and rest – including a stay at a Mount Fuji onsen – you're ready to spend your days exploring Japan’s innumerable must-see destinations.

japan tour may 2024

Konnichiwa, and welcome to Japan! Upon your arrival at Tokyo International Airport (HND) or Narita International Airport (NRT), you’ll be transferred to your handpicked hotel.

One of the world’s greatest metropolises, Tokyo is brimming with life and culture, both historical and contemporary. Spend your leisure time immersing yourself in fields of digital flowers at the incredible teamLab Planets art installation or explore the forested paths of Yoyogi Park, visiting picturesque Meiji Shrine. Tokyo’s world-class culinary scene beckons, from the delectable sushi at Michelin-starred Nishiazabu Taku to the much-lauded chocolate delights of Minimal Tomigaya.

For the brave, scramble amongst the crowds through Shibuya Crossing, then rest up back at your hotel.

Your day begins as you ascend to Tokyo Tower’s observation deck for panoramic views of the sprawling city. Continue to Tsukiji Outer Market – a bustling hub selling fresh seafood and other local delicacies. Grab some market-fresh sushi and soak up the atmosphere, then dive into the world-renowned artwork of Katsushika Hokusai at the Sumida Hokusai Museum. Learn about this famed artist, known for creating The Great Wave and Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, among other woodblock prints known as ukiyo-e.

Finish your whirlwind city tour in historic Asakusa district, window-shopping along Nakamise Shopping Street on your way to Tokyo’s oldest temple, Senso-ji. In the evening, indulge in traditional Japanese cuisine and a culture exchange with fellow travellers at your welcome dinner.

It’s time to leave behind the dizzying highs of Tokyo for a different kind of skyscraper. Set off for breathtaking Mount Fuji, stopping at serene Hakone along the way. Carve a rippling path through the tranquil waters of Lake Ashi as you take in the surrounding forests.

If the day is clear, journey up to the Fuji-Subaru Line Fifth Station of Mount Fuji for a spectacular elevated view at 2,300 metres. In the event of poor weather, explore the traditional village of Oshino Hakkai – known for its immaculate spring water and thatched-roof houses.

Later, check-in at your onsen accommodation. For thousands of years, the people of Japan have visited onsen to bathe in the therapeutic hot springs. Join this soothing tradition when you opt for a dip at the hotel’s rooftop observatory with stunning views of Mount Fuji.

Start the day at picture-perfect Oishi Park – a vibrant lakeside garden with exquisite views of the mountain. From here, take the scenic journey to Takayama in the mountainous region of Hida. Known for its popular Spring and Autumn Festivals, Takayama offers idyllic scenery with old world charm.

Settle into your hotel and explore at your leisure, wandering the painterly landscape of serene Nakabashi Park.

After breakfast, visit Takayama Jinya – former government office during the Edo period. Due to the region’s abundant timber, Takayama was placed under direct shogun control in the 17th century. Now, this complex acts as a museum of the city’s long and fascinating history.

From here, continue to Takayama’s Old Town. Marvel at beautiful wooden architecture dating back to feudal times, then browse cosy cafes and centuries-old sake breweries. Venture to remote Shirakawa-go, a UNESCO World Heritage site famed for its gassho-zukuri farmhouses. Designed to bear the weight of heavy snow, these traditional thatched-roof buildings present a unique image of rural Japan.

Later, board your private transport and travel to Kanazawa, where you’ll check in and spend the evening preparing for a full day of exploring the city.

Get to know this colourful city with a trip to buzzing Omicho Market. Taste the city’s freshest seafood and delicious snacks off the street as you chat to the friendly vendors.

Venture out for a breath of fresh air in the intricately manicured Kenroku-en gardens, originally belonging to nearby Kanazawa Castle. Kenroku-en earns its place as one of the ‘Three Great Gardens of Japan’ thanks to the arboreal flames of its autumn leaves and pastel beauty of cherry and plum blossoms in spring.

Wrap up the day with a visit to the historic geisha district of Higashi Chaya. Discover traditional wooden townhouses – known as machiya – and choose to take a moment of reflection with a warm cup of matcha in hand at one of the historic teahouses.

Bid farewell to Kanazawa and stop in at Echizen Washi Village and visit a local workshop. Here, you’ll learn about the specialised craft and cultural tradition of the both delicate and sustainable handmade Japanese washi paper.

Travel on to Kyoto, where you’ll explore the famous Gion geisha district. Stroll between the historic machiya houses of Hanamikoji Street and bear witness to Kyoto’s ongoing cultural heritage. Enjoy the evening at your leisure.

Today starts with a trip to the one-and-only Kinkaku-ji, known as the Golden Pavilion thanks to the gold leaf that coats the top two floors. Watch its dazzling reflection dance across the pond as you learn about the tumultuous history and spiritual importance of this spectacular work of design.

Next, visit Arashiyama and walk through the swaying stalks of the Bamboo Grove, listening to the gentle clacking as you crane your neck toward the canopy.

Conclude your day at Tenryu-ji, Kyoto’s most cherished Zen temple. Meander through the carefully designed gardens, strolling around the central pond and taking in the view of the nearby Arashiyama Mountains.

Retire to your hotel for a free evening in this cultural capital.

No trip to Kyoto is complete without a visit to the glorious Fushimi Inari Shrine. Climb the winding steps through thousands of bright red torii gates, carving a skeletal tunnel through the forest. Pause at the top and feel the serenity of this utterly unique Shinto shrine, then make your peaceful descent.

Switch up the tempo as you board a bullet train to Hiroshima in the afternoon, zipping through the countryside in whisper-quiet comfort. Upon arrival, check in at your hotel and spend your downtime preparing for another awe-inspiring day ahead.

Wake for a day of reflection and make your way to the Atomic Bomb Dome. The stripped frame stands resolute as a reminder of the horrific bombing of 1945. Take your time walking the tranquil avenues of the Peace Memorial Park, considering the numerous monuments highlighting the impacts of the nuclear bomb, both direct and indirect.

From here, travel to the sacred island of Miyajima, where the iconic Itsukushima Shrine is marked by an enormous, floating torii gate. Admire the beautiful natural landscape – and keep your eyes peeled for the hungry deer that wander through the town.

Head to your hotel in Okayama and spend your evening in contemplation of the day and the region’s vast cultural history.

Get started with a visit to UNESCO World Heritage-listed Himeji Castle – an imposing hilltop structure with graceful white exterior, dating back to the feudal age. With its strategic position and sprawling grounds, Himeji is one of only a dozen such feudal castles still standing.

Continue to Osaka and the busy Dotonbori walkway, painted bright with neon signs and home to myriad food vendors. Explore the bustling thoroughfare, then send off your jaunt through Japan with an exquisite feast of local delicacies as you say farewell to your travel companions.

After one final breakfast, it’s time to say sayonara to Japan. You'll be transferred to Kansai International Airport (KIX) where your journey comes to a close.

Crowds and radiant warmth

May is the Goldilocks Zone of the Japanese calendar. Neither too hot nor too cold, it's the perfect time to take a trip and just about everyone does. The Golden Week holiday from the end of April to the beginning of May marks the peak of this period with packed trains and hotels being the norm. If you must travel in the first week of May, be sure to book early.

  • The Golden Week holiday period is between late April and early May, and is one of Japan's busiest travel periods
  • With major tourist destination packed, May is a good time to explore lower-key options
  • The giant carp streamers you can see around rural Japan in May are koinobori, traditional decorations for Children's Day (May 5)

Japan in May

As the spring season comes to a close the average temperature in Japan rises in May before the arrival of the rainy season at the end of the month. Now is the perfect time of year to do some outdoor activities before the uncomfortable humidity levels of the summer months arrive.

The beginning of May also sees the opening of summer beer gardens across the country, these are usually outdoor areas converted into temporary dining spaces on rooftops and terraces featuring all-you-can-eat and drink packages.

While there is plenty of good weather and things to see and do throughout Japan in May, including numerous festivals, anniversary celebrations, and new flowers coming into full bloom, many events often require booking in advance and some forward planning. So let’s take a look at some of the best things to see and do around Japan in May to help you plan your Japanese spring vacation for 2024!

Planning a trip to Japan in the spring? Check out my How to Hanami Like a Local article for top tips on viewing cherry blossoms in Japan.

Average Temperatures in May Across Japan

Japan in May is generally a very mild and comfortable time to travel. The temperatures are warm and it is mostly sunny, public travel and outdoor areas can become extremely busy with both foreign and domestic tourists enjoying the last of the good weather before the rainy season begins in June.

japan tour may 2024

While the most popular period for seeing cherry blossoms in Japan is generally between late March and early April, even as late in the season as May you can still view cherry blossoms in Japan, but you’ll have to head north to see them. There are several well-known viewing spots for cherry blossoms in various stages of bloom on Japan’s second-largest island.

  • Maruyama Park in Sapporo draws some of the largest cherry blossom viewing crowds in the city. The main path through the park that leads to Hokkaido shrine is lined with cherry blossom trees and around mid-May becomes an extremely popular hanami spot.
  • Moerenuma Park is a large park on the edge of Sapporo that was designed by Japanese-American artist Isamu Noguchi. Near the center of the park, you will find the Forest of Cherry Trees, a dense woodland of more than 3,000 cherry trees that changes color around mid-May.
  • Nakajima Park , also located in Sapporo, and considered one of the most beautiful parks in Hokkaido, contains Hokkaido’s largest concert hall, an observatory, tennis courts, cafes, museums, and a boating pond. japan tour may 2024

Many cities in Japan, especially Tokyo and Osaka, feature rooftop beer gardens during the warmer months. These offer a great opportunity to enjoy a cold beer and delicious food with a view of the city skyline.

They frequently offer all-you-can-eat-and-drink packages within certain hours, and will usually put out some kind of buffet or BBQ for the guests. 13. Kakeuma Shinji – Kyoto

japan tour may 2024

This lively and technically impressive traditional Japanese trick-riding event is a sight to behold. Every year, horseback riders from all over Japan visit the shrine to display their skills in front of large crowds and to impress the gods enshrined nearby. Horses run at incredible speeds along the track as riders perform daring feats such as hanging from the sides or reaching precariously placed flags.

Towards the end of the event, there is a procession of mikoshi, followed by priests and riders dressed as warriors towards the shrine where an offering is made to the gods.

The event’s origins come from the importance horseriding once had throughout feudal Japan, as samurai would train themselves to be skilled warriors on horseback. While there may no longer be a need for warriors to hone their skills, the shrine still displays this impressive style of riding each year at the festival.

  • WHERE & WHEN : Fujinomori Shrine, Fukakusa Toriizakicho, Fushimi Ward, Kyoto, May 1 to May 5, between 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM.

14. Nikko Toshogu Shrine Spring Festival – Tochigi

Nikko Toshogu shrine’s largest annual event, which is held on May 17 & 18, features Yabusame (traditional Japanese horse archery), live performances of traditional music from the Edo period known as Gagaku, and a grand procession of a thousand samurai warriors carrying Tokugawa Ieyasu to his final resting place at the shrine in Nikko.

The entire event is a sober and thoughtful recreation of the shogun’s funeral as his body was transferred from Mount Kunousan to the prefecture, and although the Yabusame demonstrations outside the shrine are very entertaining, it is not as lively as most Japanese festivals due to it mainly being a religious reenactment of a historically significant event.

  • WHERE & WHEN : Nikko Toshogu Shrine, Nikko, Tochigi. May 17 & 18.

The park is open to the public during the spring and autumn seasons. The spring opening dates generally fall between the end of April and early May, but it is best to check the website ahead of time. Some of the floats are more than 6 meters tall and can be seen from neighboring towns as they slowly roll through the narrow neighborhood streets.

Other festival highlights include a variety of Japanese street foods and lively performances of traditional Japanese instruments such as the shamisen, flute, and drums. Dates to Avoid: Public Holidays

Golden week.

Whatever you do, try to avoid going to Japan during Golden Week, which is Monday, April 29 to Monday, May 5.

The Golden Week holiday is a series of back-to-back national holidays in Japan in late April and the first week of May, which includes Shōwa Day on April 29, to honor the birthday of Emperor Shōwa (Hirohito) and reflect on his reign, Constitution Memorial Day on May 3, to celebrate the birth of Japan’s constitution, Greenery Day on May 4, a day to be thankful for nature’s blessings, and Children’s Day on May 5, a day to wish for the happiness of children.

Golden Week is one of the busiest and most expensive times of the year and peak season for travel as domestic travel routes can become extremely crowded. Events and accommodations also get booked up fast, so if possible, avoid these dates for travel. If you are planning on traveling during this period then it would be a good idea to plan as far in advance as possible.

Japan Express

Guide was excellent however took us only to the free places and the tour guidance lasted till 1300 usually and thus you are on your own to scramble to make plans for the rest of the day and figure out how to get there etc. Seems like I paid a lot of money for the minimal touring I received from Intrepid.

Couldn't have asked for a better trip to Japan. Such an amazing tour, guide and group of people. I love how everything is planned and included but you also have the time needed to make the trip your own. 9D Splendid Japan with Nagoya (private 3 star hotel rooms)

Tours between Osaka and Tokyo were good. There were no organized tours of Osaka and Tokyo so I did them on my own. Hotels were good though I wish the Tokyo Hotel was closer to the City center. The brochure showed Toyota City is included but we were there on a Monday when they are usually closed. The bus was comfortable but miss not having Wi-fi and charging outlets. The Hiroshima and Kyoto were good tours but both were optional tours that we paid extra for.

This tour was fun, informative, and exciting. Our guide, Kiyoe Naria, was wonderful. She went over and above her responsibilities and helped make the trip a terrific experience. There was a lot of walking, which was fine for everyone on our trip, but any prospective traveler should understand this. The other people on the trip were interesting and helpful and I couldn't have asked for a better group or guide.

Epic 13-Day Japan Budget Tour: Odyssey Across the Land of the Rising Sun

Ricardo was our trip leader and was incredible! He is so chill. Even with such a fast paced tour he was always calm and collected and always giving out recommendations and advice for things to do. The trip is fast paced and involves a lot of walking and public transport. I personally loved this as it meant I was always busy and travelling like a local. There is a good amount of free time and to be able to do Nara on the free day is great as it meant we could take our time there. The hostels were pretty good (one was a bit too cramped for the amount of people but that’s hostel travelling for you). The rest were good and to be honest it’s only a place to sleep as you’ll be so busy. I would highly recommend this trip. I had never heard of the company before but so glad I took the risk. Again I would like to thank Ricardo for being so amazing as a tour leader!

What people love about Japan Tours in October

I had a fabulous 10-day around Japan. Although it was a very packed tour this was exactly what was needed to see all the highlights of Japan in 10 days. A particular highlight was the sushi making class in Tokyo, this was a lot of fun. I also loved the temple stay, it was such a good opportunity to stay here, and one I couldn’t have organised myself. I owe a lot to Hayley our tour guide who made the whole experience very enjoyable, she was always very energetic and up for lots of fun. She was extremely organised with timings on travel days and so giving, she always put the group first whether that was meal times, travel days or in regard to accommodation. I had a wonderful time and I owe a lot to my tour group, the organisation of the tour and our amazing guide, Hayley.
It was a very nice trip, with little, insignificant hiccup with accommodation in Osaka, which was resolved quite quickly. Yoyo, our guide, was funny and very patient with all of us. Definitely will recommend the tour to first time visitors to Japan.
We had great tour guides for this tour. It was a perfect amount of time at each location. The tour guides were very professional and educational! We learned so much and we got to relax the most during this tour because we didn't need to plan or worry about logistics! Appreciated our tour guides, very punctual and to-the-schedule! There was also a good balance of free-time with the scheduled times! Highly recommend for anyone that doesn't want to stress over the planning, wants an appetizer palette of Japan and loves to learn about history & culture!

Amalfi Coast, Italy

Best Places to Travel in May

There’s no place quite like the Amalfi Coast in spring. This iconic stretch of Italian coastline comes alive in May with colorful bougainvillea, fragrant lemon groves and glamorous seaside towns that are a magnet for jet setters and honeymooners alike.

Base yourself in postcard-perfect Positano to explore the region’s charms. Spend your days browsing artisan boutiques, sipping Aperol spritzes in chic cafes and soaking up the Mediterranean sun on the black sand beaches. Take a day trip to the ancient ruins of Pompeii or hop on a ferry to the stylish island of Capri.

As the weather warms up, hiking trails like the famous Path of the Gods offer breathtaking views of the rugged coastline and shimmering sea. Foodies will be in heaven with the abundance of fresh seafood, handmade pasta and local specialties like mozzarella di bufala. Wash it all down with a crisp white wine from the nearby vineyards.

While the Amalfi Coast is notoriously expensive, May is a great time to snag a deal before the summer surge. Splurge on a cliffside villa with an infinity pool or opt for a charming family-run pensione in one of the quieter villages. Just be sure to book well in advance as accommodations fill up fast.

Where to Stay:

  • Le Sirenuse: This iconic Positano hotel oozes old-world glamour with its antique-filled rooms, Michelin-starred restaurant and Instagram-worthy pool terrace.
  • Casa Angelina: Perched on a cliff in the peaceful village of Praiano, this boutique hotel offers minimalist chic decor, a world-class spa and jaw-dropping views of the Tyrrhenian Sea.
  • Hotel Santa Caterina: A grand dame of the Amalfi Coast, this 19th-century villa features elegant rooms, lush gardens, a private beach club and a glass elevator that descends through the cliffs.

Havana, Cuba

Step back in time to the golden age of travel with a trip to Havana. The Cuban capital has a faded glamour that’s utterly beguiling, from the crumbling colonial architecture to the vintage American cars cruising the streets. May brings warm, sunny days and a festive atmosphere leading up to the city’s 500th anniversary celebrations.

Start your explorations in Old Havana, a UNESCO World Heritage site packed with historic plazas, baroque churches and lively street life. Sip a mojito at Hemingway’s favorite haunt, La Bodeguita del Medio, or catch a cabaret show at the legendary Tropicana nightclub. Art lovers can browse the galleries and museums showcasing Cuba’s vibrant culture.

Outside the city center, stroll along the Malecón, a seaside promenade where locals gather to fish, flirt and watch the sunset. Take a day trip to the lush Viñales Valley to tour a tobacco plantation or go hiking in the mogote hills. Beach bums can catch some rays at the nearby playas del este or venture further afield to the white sands of Varadero.

Accommodations in Havana range from grand historic hotels to cozy casas particulares (private homes) where you can experience authentic Cuban hospitality. Be aware that tourism infrastructure is still developing, so expect some quirks and bring plenty of cash as credit cards are not widely accepted.

  • Hotel Nacional de Cuba: This Art Deco landmark has hosted everyone from Frank Sinatra to Fidel Castro and offers old-school elegance, lush gardens and stellar cocktails on the seaside terrace.
  • La Reserva Vedado: A stylish new boutique hotel in the trendy Vedado neighborhood, with mid-century modern decor, a rooftop pool and farm-to-table restaurant.
  • Casa Particular: Stay with a local family for an immersive cultural experience and home-cooked meals. Many casas can be booked online through sites like Airbnb or Cuba Junky.

Kyoto, Japan

May is one of the best times to visit Kyoto, when the spring cherry blossoms have faded but the summer heat and crowds have yet to arrive. The ancient capital of Japan is a feast for the senses, with its stunning temples, tranquil gardens and geisha culture.

Begin your journey in the historic Gion district, where kimono-clad geishas still scurry through the narrow streets lined with traditional wooden machiya houses. Visit the iconic Fushimi Inari Shrine, with its thousands of bright orange torii gates winding through the forest. Or take a leisurely stroll through the Arashiyama bamboo grove, especially ethereal in the early morning light.

Kyoto is also a food lover’s paradise, from the refined kaiseki cuisine to the humble ramen joint. Don’t miss the chance to sample local specialties like tofu, matcha and wagashi sweets. Tea ceremonies and cooking classes offer a hands-on way to learn about the city’s rich culinary traditions.

As the cultural heart of Japan, Kyoto has no shortage of festivals and events throughout the year. In May, the Aoi Matsuri features a grand procession of over 500 people in imperial court dress, while the Kamogawa Odori showcases geisha dances along the riverbank.

Accommodations range from traditional ryokan inns to sleek modern hotels. For a truly immersive experience, stay in a machiya townhouse converted into a boutique hotel or vacation rental.

  • Hoshinoya Kyoto: This luxurious riverside ryokan offers serene Japanese-style rooms, haute kaiseki cuisine and a floating tea room reached by a small boat.
  • Sowaka: A intimate 23-room hotel in a renovated machiya house, with minimalist decor, a tranquil courtyard garden and a stylish bar lounge.
  • Iori Machiya Stay: Experience living like a local in one of these beautifully restored townhouses, complete with tatami mat floors, sliding shoji doors and compact kitchens.

Yosemite National Park, California

May is a magical time to visit Yosemite National Park, when the waterfalls are at their peak and the crowds are still relatively thin. This iconic park in California’s Sierra Nevada mountains is a wonderland of granite cliffs, ancient sequoia trees and abundant wildlife.

Most visitors head straight for Yosemite Valley, where you can gaze up at the towering face of El Capitan or take a refreshing dip in the Merced River. Hike to the top of Vernal Fall for a jaw-dropping view of the cascade or tackle the strenuous climb up Half Dome for a true bucket list experience.

Beyond the valley, Yosemite has over 1,200 square miles of pristine wilderness to explore. Drive up to Glacier Point for panoramic vistas of the High Sierra or take a scenic loop around the Tuolumne Meadows. Keep an eye out for black bears, mule deer and over 250 species of birds that call the park home.

Campers have their pick of 13 campgrounds within Yosemite, from the popular Upper Pines to the remote Tamarack Flat. For those who prefer creature comforts, the park also offers lodges, cabins and canvas tent cabins. Just be sure to book well in advance as accommodations fill up fast, especially on weekends.

  • The Ahwahnee: This grand historic lodge, built in 1927, offers rustic luxury in the heart of Yosemite Valley, with elegantly appointed rooms, fine dining and stunning views of Half Dome.
  • Yosemite Valley Lodge: A more affordable option steps from Yosemite Falls, with modern rooms, an outdoor pool and several dining options.
  • Curry Village: A charming collection of canvas tent cabins and wooden cabins with a nostalgic summer camp vibe, plus a pizza deck and ice rink in winter.

Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon is having a moment, and May is the perfect time to see what all the fuss is about. The Portuguese capital has it all: stunning architecture, vibrant nightlife, delicious cuisine and a laid-back charm that’s impossible to resist. And with the days getting longer and warmer, May is ideal for exploring this captivating city.

Start your day with a pastel de nata (custard tart) and a bica (espresso) at one of the many cafes lining the cobblestone streets. Then hop on a vintage tram to wind your way through the colorful neighborhoods of Alfama, Bairro Alto and Chiado. Stop at the iconic Belém Tower, a UNESCO World Heritage site, or marvel at the intricate tilework of the Jerónimos Monastery.

Foodies will be in heaven with Lisbon’s thriving culinary scene, from the traditional tascas serving hearty seafood stews to the Michelin-starred restaurants pushing the boundaries of Portuguese cuisine. Don’t miss the chance to sample local specialties like bacalhau (salted cod), caldo verde (kale soup) and ginjinha (sour cherry liqueur).

As the sun sets, head to one of the many miradouros (viewpoints) to watch the city light up and listen to the haunting strains of fado music drifting from the bars. Or dance the night away at one of the clubs along the waterfront.

Accommodations range from chic boutique hotels to budget-friendly hostels. For a truly local experience, rent a cozy apartment in one of the historic neighborhoods.

  • Palácio Belmonte: A 15th-century palace turned luxury hotel, with just 10 suites decorated with priceless antiques and contemporary art, plus a rooftop terrace with 360-degree views of the city.
  • Memmo Alfama: A design-forward hotel tucked away in the winding streets of Alfama, with sleek rooms, a rooftop pool and wine bar overlooking the Tagus River.
  • The Lisboans: A collection of stylish apartments in a restored 19th-century building, with fully equipped kitchens, vintage furnishings and a prime location in the trendy Baixa neighborhood.

333 Carp and Saury Streamers (Minato Ward)

At Tokyo Tower, a special arrangement for Children's Day (May 5th) will feature a colorful display of koinobori, or carp streamers, traditionally used to wish for the healthy growth of boys. In honor of Tokyo Tower's height of 333 meters, 333 vibrant carp streamers will be hoisted in front of the main entrance on the first floor, creating a spectacular sight as they "swim" energetically in the wind. Among these, look out for a unique 6-meter-long "sanma nobori," cleverly mixed among the koinobori. This special streamer is hoisted in homage to Ofunato City in Iwate Prefecture , known for its leading catch of sanma (Pacific saury) and a friend of Tokyo Tower. It also sends a message of support for the recovery from the Great East Japan Earthquake. Don't miss the majestic view of 333 colorful koinobori swimming boldly against the backdrop of Tokyo Tower and the clear blue sky. All-Japan All-Around Championships 2024: Cramped arms and all, Hashimoto Daiki takes fourth straight title

Hashimoto Daiki, now four-time national all-around champion

Hashimoto Daiki breezed to a fourth consecutive All-Japan Gymnastics All-Around Championship on Sunday (14 April) - with both arms cramping up on the last two events.

Talk about a tolerance for pain.

“I thought I’d top 89 with ease - even a 90 maybe if I was perfect on the horizontal bar,” Hashimoto said, after romping to the men’s title with a 176.164 over the two days - four points ahead of Oka Shinnosuke (172.264) and five ahead of Kaya Kazuma (171.596). “But I was kind of worried about cramping up. So it is what it is. Lesson learned.

“Through the first four events I felt great but I hadn’t really worked on the stamina to get through the two days which I was a little bit concerned about.

“I think that’s the takeaway for the NHK Trophy. But I was happy with how I felt.”

Hashimoto Daiki has looked like an Olympic medallist on the pommel horse in 2024.

Hashimoto Daiki: Zhang Boheng is the man to beat in Paris

A year ago, the Olympic and world all-around champion accomplished the first three-peat here since Uchimura Kohei despite nursing a fractured lower back, feeling his way through each apparatus.

This week at the Takasaki Arena in Gunma Prefecture, however, a fully fit Hashimoto has been a class apart from his peers, in total control of mind and body - until he hit the parallel bars on Sunday.

As he landed off the apparatus, Hashimoto immediately clutched his arms in pain, running to his coach for aid.

Hashimoto was rubbed down and went back out for the horizontal bar, his Olympic gold medal-winning event, but the cramps returned as soon as he started his routine. Somehow, the 22-year-old held on and made it to the finish although he almost stumbled off the safety mats on the landing, which resulted in a very pedestrian 13.800 by his standards.

While the crowd sighed in relief after it was revealed that Hashimoto simply cramped up and was not hurt, it was a shame he couldn’t sustain his level of performance through all six events. Before the parallel bars, he had produced a 15.000 on the floor, 15.133 on the pommel horse and 15.100 on the vault.

Hashimoto felt good enough that he thought he could surpass Zhang Boheng ’s 89.299 from the Asian Games last year - which he hopes to take another crack at the 16-19 May NHK Trophy. Hashimoto - the only Japanese gymnast to have secured a quota for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games - will find out who his team-mates in Paris will be at the NHK Trophy, also to be held in Takasaki.

“Zhang scored an 89.2, I think, so if I can score 89 overseas I definitely think I can win (Paris),” Hashimoto said. “It’s hard to tell from domestic competitions alone but I want a performance that will translate well overseas.

“I managed to get through the two days without an injury. The NHK Trophy will be the last competition before Paris. I want to compete there with confidence so I hope I figure out whatever I need to figure out physically.”

* As National Olympic Committees have the exclusive authority for the representation of their respective countries at the Olympic Games, athletes' participation at the Paris Games depends on their NOC selecting them to represent their delegation at Paris 2024.
