  • Information

In 1995, the Gabb family purchased their beautiful Journey’s End vineyard in the Stellenbosch winelands. From the beginning their focus has been on ethically and sustainably producing delicious premium wines. Supporting the local Sir Lowry’s Pass Village community is also key. In 2020, they launched a foundation which now provides over 30,000 meals a week to those in need. Nestled amongst the Schapenberg hills, on 350 million-year-old decomposed granite soils, their vines grow in one of the most prestigious terroirs in South Africa. As well as fantastic views, the vineyards benefit from the cooling and cleansing south-easterly wind, known locally as the ‘Cape Doctor’, which comes in from nearby False Bay and the Atlantic Ocean.

Young and fresh, with aromas and flavours of ripe blackcurrant fruit, cassis and spicy oak. Ripe tannins give this wine a firm and rich mouthfeel, with a lasting finish.

A core of rich blackcurrants, black plum, with a savoury overlay, meat extract, white pepper, mixed spice. The velvety texture is a result of maturation and fine-textured tannins. Complex, layered and well crafted. Drink now and up to 2030.

The grapes were handpicked early in the morning from block 6B situated next to a Eucalyptus forest which has an influence on the flavour profile but also protects the block from the wind. The grapes were picked at 25.5 balling and stored overnight in the cold room before processed the next morning.

The grapes were hand sorted and de-stemmed but not crushed. Whole berries were cold soaked for 72 hours. The juice was subjected to a five day pre-fermentation cold maceration and was thereafter fermented with neutral yeast to depict a true vineyard character in the wine . Fermentation took about 15 days at 18 - 25̊ C with a carefully planned pump over and punch down schedule in open fermentation tanks. Malolactic fermentation was done in barrels and only free run juice was used. Wine was oak matured for 16 months in 25% new 300L French oak barrels, 5% new American oak and the rest in 2nd fill 300L French Oak barrels.

Founded in 1996 when the Gabb family took over the estate, Journey’s End is situated right in the heart of Stellenbosch - and, with one of the cape's most exciting terroirs, has quickly become one of the region's top wineries.

In the cellars, winemaker Leon Esterhuizen handles the grapes as little as possible, using pre-fermentation soaks to maximise fruit characters. His sensitive use of oak ensures that the fruit always shines through in the glass.

The family's philosophy is one of minimal intervention, both in the vineyards and the cellar. 10ha of land on the estate has been set aside for a re-wilding project, and similar respect for the environment can be seen across the whole winery. Journey's End are committed to using only natural pesticides, where possible forgoing these in favour of cover crops to distract pests away from vines and act as a natural fertiliser. Wildlife is abundant throughout the vineyards and farm and works to create a perfect ecosystem for winegrowing; from beehives that encourage pollination, to Egyptian runner ducks that eat insects, to Eagle owls that catch rodents.

But Journey's End don't stop there - they were the second winery in the whole of South Africa to become entirely solar powered. Alongside this, they have a deep-running focus on community; one of our Fairtrade producers, they undertake efforts from running soup kitchens and pensioners' lunches, to building new school halls.

Journeys End V4 Sauvignon 2017. A core of rich blackcurrants, black plum, with a savoury overlay, meat extract and mixed spice. The velvety character is a result of generous oak maturation resulting in finely textured tannins and a long-lasting finish. Complex and layered. Drink now and up to 2026.

The Grapes were picked from block 6B which rests 200m above sea level on a predominantly Tukulu based soil with excellent structure and water retaining ability. Vigorous hardy vines deal well with the strong winds and produce beautiful quality grapes with compact bunches and small berries with thick skins. This was the last block picked during the 2016 harvest.

The grapes were stored overnight in the cold room before being hand sorted and destemmed. The whole berries were cold soaked for 5 days before being inoculated. Fermentation lasted 15 days between 18 – 25˚C in stainless steel tanks. A carefully planned pump over and delestage schedule ensured good aromatic extraction. The wine was subsequently subjected to a two-week post fermentation skin maceration where malolactic fermentation took place. After being pressed off the skins the wine is left to mature in a combination of 225L and 300L French oak barrels for 17months. 30% New French oak was used along with 70% older French oak barrels. We fine the wine with bentonite which means our wine is vegan friendly.

Identity Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

Cabernet Sauvignon

This old-World style red displays rich dark red fruit aromas including blackcurrant, ripe cherries, hints of cassis and subtle dark chocolate spice. These aromas are also experienced on the palate and are accompanied by sweet tobacco and Christmas cake characters. This wine has a well-integrated tannic structure showing elegance and lengthy finish.

Technical Notes

The vineyard is planted on a Southeast-facing slope and the roots burrow deep into well weathered granites soils. The grapes were handpicked at 25° balling early in the morning. The grapes were stored in the cold room overnight. The next day they were hand sorted and gently destemmed before being pumped into stainless steel tanks for fermentation. The grapes underwent a 72-hour cold soak before the temperature was lifted to stimulate fermentation. Open fermenter tanks are filled with whole berries and it allows for a slow extraction of tannins and an intense fruit driven profile. Punch downs are done by hand to ensure delicate tannins in this wine. The fermentation lasted 12 days. After fermentation, extended maceration on the skins is allowed for 2 weeks. Extended maceration allows the components to mesh and achieve greater harmony. Tanks were gently pressed, and the free run wine was racked into 5000 L wooden barrels for 6 months to extract light notes of wood characters. All cultivars were matured separately before being blended, fined, stabilized and bottled.
