While it may seem counter-intuitive to head to a tropical locale to catch the holiday spirit, Key West in December is a wonderland of festive surprises. The w arm temps might very well be the reason residents approach the yuletide season with such unbridled enthusiasm. Visitors can enjoy a bevy of merry events and attractions throughout the month. 

The historic Old Town architecture takes on a new glow, as the gingerbread millwork is laced with twinkling lights and icicles. Giant snowflakes hang from wraparound balconies, and red ribbons and green garland stripe the columns. Candy canes, penguins and snowmen mix with the bougainvillea, frangipani and hibiscus along the lawns. The Holiday Lights Conch Train Tour, Holiday Historic Inn Tour --or even just cruising around on a bike--are great ways to see the decorations.

The Historic Seaport plays host to a series of events as part of their Bight Before Christmas celebration. This includes the Nautical Harbor Walk of Lights and the Key West Lighted Boat Parade . Festivities culminate in an island-wide New Year’s Eve Celebration where various bars drop things way more interesting than a crystal ball. Classic Harbor Line Key West

You won't find better seats for two of Key West's best holiday celebrations--the Lighted Boat Parade and New Year's Eve at Schooner Wharf--than aboard the America 2.0. This sleek schooner is a near replica of the first boat to win the America's Cup in 1851 with teak decks and mahogany trimmings. The holiday cruise is a three-hour sailing adventure under the glowing moonlight and stunning decorations. As the other vessels pass by, you'll enjoy hot cider (spiked), conch chowder and cookies along with complimentary beer, wine, champagne, soda and water. Tickets are $96 per person. At their adults-only New Year's Eve bash, experience all the action front and center with VIP dockside access to the Schooner Wharf Bar. In front of the Bourbon Street Pub (305-293-9800), a disco party goes non-stop with drag queens entertaining on an outdoor stage. At midnight, Sushi, the diva of drag, dressed in a glittering ball gown, descends from the top balcony inside a red 8-foot-long high heel. Down the block, you can join the revelry spilling out onto Duval Street from Sloppy Joe's Bar (305-296-2388). At the final countdown, a giant manmade conch shell descends from the roof. For something a little more mellow, the Ocean Key Resort (305-296-7701) drops a Key lime wedge into a giant Margarita as the clock strikes twelve. Not to be outdone, Schooner Wharf Bar (305-292-3302) lowers a pirate wench from the top of a tall ship's mast. Cannons punctuate the end of the year.

The charter boats dress to impress with elaborate decorations woven into the masts and riggings like a 20-foot spinning Christmas ornament or a 30-foot Art Deco angel. A Detailed Guide on the Best Time to Visit the Florida Keys

Like I mentioned above, there’s really no bad time to visit the Florida Keys. This is because the Florida Keys weather is tropical year round !

To start, I wanted to give you a quick overview of what type of temperatures you can expect in the Florida Keys across all four seasons! I’ll go into more specific details (about hurricanes, rain, etc.) in the later sections, but this is a great starting point!

I chose Key West to pull data from, but the average across all the Keys is typically very similar!

As you can see, temperatures in the Keys are quite warm year-round . It rarely dips below 60, and most days are filled with sunshine.. sounds perfect right?! Almost… but keep reading to find out the cons of each season!

Quick Look at the Best Time to Visit the Florida Keys

Due to the wonderful weather, the best time to visit the Florida Keys for events is between January and April. During this time, you can attend famous festivals and events like the Seven Mile Bridge Run , Conch Republic Independence Celebration, and the Florida Keys Seafood Festival!

Best Time to Visit the Florida Keys For Weather

In my opinion, the best time to visit the Florida Keys for weather is March – April. Of course, this is totally subjective to what you define as “good weather”. Some people prefer the extremely mild temperatures in December and January.

In general, avoid visiting in June, July, August, and September if you want to avoid sweltering temperatures, afternoon rain storms, and hurricanes! 😉

Best Time to Visit the Florida Keys For Low Prices

Naturally, the cheapest time to visit the Florida Keys is when the weather is the worst.. aka June, July, August, and September! As mentioned above, summer in the Florida Keys are hot and humid. Afternoon rain storms are extremely common. Plus, you run the risk of having your vacation cancelled by a hurricane.

Some might call summer the worst time to visit the Florida Keys. However, I disagree. As a Floridian, I can put up with the soaring temperatures. If a hurricane comes, I can simply cancel my vacation! I love visiting the Florida Keys in the summer because the crowds are small and hotel prices are low!

Best Time to Visit the Florida Keys For Boating

Similar to the above, the best time to get out on the water in the Florida Keys is summertime. In the summer, the ocean temperature in the Keys is nice and warm (around 86ºF in August!). You’ll typically be blessed with calm seas and sunny days. In addition, summer is the start of mini lobster season , which is a very popular time to visit the Keys!

Visiting the Florida Keys: Breakdown by Season

Below I’ll provide an overview of what it’s like to visit the Florida Keys in each season! This includes a more detailed breakdown of the weather patterns, plus a list of different events you can attend!

Visiting the Florida Keys in the Spring

Months : March – May Weather : Cool with little to no rain! Crowds : Minimal, except for spring breakers Events : Seafood festivals & fishing tournaments!

Spring Weather in the Florida Keys

Let’s start with Spring time, because it’s personally my favorite time to visit the Keys.

From March through May, the weather in the Keys is just perfect. Highs typically stay under the mid-80°s, and it’s nice and cool in the evenings. Plus, rainfall is pretty low, and so are crowds!!

Hotels shouldn’t be too pricey in March – May, as you are coming off high season (winter). However, there may be some crowds in Key West due to Spring Break, so keep that in mind!

Unlike a lot of places, summer is actually low season in the Florida Keys!

Why… you might ask? Two words. Heat . and. Humidity

If you’re not used to them, summers in south Florida can be particularly brutal! We are talking highs in the upper 90s and humidity up to 80%. So, it can be very unpleasant if you’re not used to this type of weather.

This is why a lot of people avoid visiting the Florida Keys in the summertime and why summer is the cheapest time to visit. If you’re looking to avoid the crowds, summer is the perfect time to visit the Florida Keys.

Summer is also the best time for snorkeling and scuba diving in the Keys . The ocean is warm, the seas are calm, and the water is clear!

In addition to the temps, June 1st marks the beginning of hurricane season . I’ll dive more into hurricane season in the next section, but one tip here: make sure you book refundable tickets and hotels if you are planning to visit during hurricane season!

In terms of events, one of the biggest draws to visiting the Florida Keys in the summer is the start of Lobster season! Mini season is the last Wednesday and Thursday in July , followed by the regular season stretching from August 6 through March 31 .

You will normally see an uptick in hotel prices and crowds during mini season and the beginning of lobster season, but then it levels out!

Fall Weather in the Florida Keys

Fall in the Florida Keys should really be split into two seasons..

During the first half, from the beginning of September to about mid-October, it’s basically just a continuation of summer.

Hurricane season is in full swing. It’s still extremely hot. And it rains almost every afternoon..

If you’re visiting this time of year, like I mentioned above, make sure to have a Plan B and book everything refundable. The reason is, 95% of hurricanes pop up in August – October, and they really pop up out of nowhere.

Unfortunately, I have had to cancel trips within a few days’ notice because of hurricanes, so it’s best to be prepared! Again, if you’re looking for less crowds and lower hotel prices, this can still be a great time to visit! Just expect some rain, and be prepared if things go awry!

However, from mid-October through November , temperatures start to cool and rain chances fall. October – November can be a beautiful time to visit the Keys – everything is pretty mild during this time. Plus, there are not many crowds!

Winter in the Keys is very similar to Spring in the Keys, except you might need a light jacket!

For real, the weather in the Florida Keys from December to February is absolutely to die for.. With highs in the 70s, and lows in the mid-60s, you will still see plenty of people in shorts and flip flops.

The water temperature is still swimmable (although you might want a wetsuit!)

And it BARELY rains..

Sounds too good to be true right? All of these perks come at the cost of higher hotel prices, more crowds, etc. So if you’re trying to save money on your trip to the Keys, winter might not be the best time to visit.

Not surprisingly, there are TONS of festivals in the Keys during this time of year thanks to the great weather. Here are some of the most popular:

Packing for the Florida Keys

Luckily, your packing list for the Keys won’t vary much from season to season. Here is what I recommend bringing along! Don’t forget to check out my guide on What to Wear in Key West for all my packing tips!

• Snorkel Gear (if you don’t have your own, you can rent some)
• Polarized Sunglasses ( these are adorable and inexpensive!)
• Bathing Suits
• Waterproof sandals (I love my Reefs !)

• Floppy Hat ( this one rolls up for easy packing)
• Umbrella/rain jacket
• Bug Repellent

Other Things You Should Know

Hotels in the Keys can fill up FAST in high season or around major events and festivals. I recommend booking six months in advance if you know you’ll be visiting during one of these times. Make sure you read the reviews on TripAdvisor before choosing a hotel!

Like I mentioned above, if you’re planning to visit the Keys during hurricane season, make sure to book a refundable room. I always use Booking.com because they have great cancellation policies!

If you’re visiting the Florida Keys for the first time, I highly recommend renting a car and driving from Key Largo to Key West so you can really see all that the Florida Keys have to offer. But if you’re short on time, a weekend trip from Miami to Key Largo also fits the bill!

The Florida Keys are the winter getaway you’ve been dreaming about

People come to Florida for many reasons – warm weather, good vibes, and ecosystems like no other chief among them. Another major motivation, for some at least: the desire to be in a place without rules. 

If you are inclined to think the Sunshine State is the ideal place to kick back and be yourself, that’s an even truer sentiment in the Florida Keys. Disconnected from the mainland and floating like a string of sandy pearls descending southwest from Homestead, its long been a come-as-you-are destination with a welcome as warm as the weather.

There’s plenty of outdoors stuff to do, al fresco dining options abound, and did we mention that the temperature averages around 78 degrees year-round? Winters here are not only warm relative to the rest of the country, they’re also the driest time of year in South Florida, so you don’t have to worry about sudden squalls or hurricanes.

In other words, it’s just a different vibe in the Florida Keys. So this winter, while everyone else is suffering gray skies or seeking snow-covered holidays, opt for something different yourself.

You get to the Keys by driving south, and south, and more south still, on US 1 out of Homestead. Once US 1 leaves the Florida mainland, it becomes the Overseas Highway, which stretches to Key West. The length of the road is marked by decreasing mile markers (MM), starting with MM 113 right out of Homestead, and ticking down to MM 0 in Key West.

With that said, it’s not immediately obvious you’ve entered an island chain. Mangrove forests extend from the mainland right onto the Upper Keys, the northernmost islands in the chain, so you don’t initially get the sense of driving over water (but trust us, you are). 

Key Largo is the center of activity in the Upper Keys, and the main draw is John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park . As parks go, this one is unique in that most of it is located underwater, although there are some nice mangrove boardwalk trails to enjoy. But the real attraction is one of the best-preserved coral reefs in the Lower 48 United States; this underwater wonderland can be accessed via snorkeling and SCUBA tours, or glass-bottom boat trips. Since winter is the driest time of year in the Keys, that (generally) means you’ll have better visibility underwater.

After wearing yourself out in the water, consider stopping into the Key Largo Conch House . This restaurant, housed in a restored mansion, serves innovative takes on fresh Florida cuisine, serving crab-stuffed mahi and a mean lobster bisque. There’s a wraparound porch for outdoor dining, which is available year-round – a luxury few places in the US can boast.

As you proceed southwest along the Overseas Highway it starts to really feel like an Overseas Highway; causeways rise and dip amidst green mangrove islands that dapple the teal and blue water. 

The Keys are made up of limestone islands fringed with mangroves, meaning a little less sand and a lot more chances for kayaking, fishing, diving, and wildlife viewing. But if you have your heart set on tucking to that beach read under a big umbrella, head to Anne’s Beach – one of the best on Islamorada. Tucked away amid mudflats and mangroves the shallow water, cooling breezes, and unending turquoise horizons make for a nice place to relax.

You can’t miss Robbie’s Marina as you drive the length of the Keys. It’s hard to find one descriptor for this place; it is a marina, an open-air arts and flea market, restaurant, and launching point for kayakers who want to paddle around the mangrove islands like the abandoned Lignumvitae Key. If you’re not into paddling yourself, you can also book onto a guided eco-tour, which depart from the marina. Going in winter means you won’t have to put up with rough water, or the intense heat of a Florida summer.

The second-largest town in the Keys, and the rough halfway point between Key Largo and Key West, is Marathon. While Marathon has its own tourist attractions, it is also very much a town for Keys locals, who are also known as "conchs" (pronounced "konk"). 

One of the biggest draws here is Sombrero Beach ; while this isn’t a natural beach, it is a very pretty stretch of buttery sand that ticks all the boxes when it comes to seaside relaxation. Curry Hammock State Park is the largest parcel of uninhabited land between here and Key Largo (1000 acres). It’s a great spot for wandering boardwalk trails, kayaking (you can rent boats here), and just generally getting gently lost in old Florida wilderness. 

Also of note is the Turtle Hospital , a working animal care clinic that rehabilitates injured or sick sea turtles. Because this is an actual veterinary hospital, you must visit on a guided tour.

If you’re feeling peckish, don’t leave Marathon without grabbing a meal at Keys Fisheries . This restaurant, which overlooks a working waterfront, is a lovely spot for an outdoors fish taco or lobster reuben sandwich, all enjoyed as you watch fishermen clean out the next customer’s order on the docks.

You’ll leave Marathon via the Seven Mile Bridge, which is, well, a very long bridge (6.79 miles long, if you’re nitpicking). The views on either side of this span are suitably breathtaking. In the Lower Keys – the most rural islands in the archipelago – keep an eye out for tiny Key deer, a subspecies of white-tailed deer. Seriously, keep an eye out! Key deer aren’t just cute, they’re protected, and speed limits are reduced for their safety. If you want to get a closer look, head to the National Key Deer Refuge Headquarters on Big Pine and No Name keys.

The crown jewel of Keys beaches can be found at Bahia Honda State Park , postcard-perfect on a sunny day. The sand is fine and the water is clear and, as a bonus, you can go for a walk on a piece of abandoned railroad that was supposed to unite the islands with the mainland. The dry winter makes for plenty of sunny days and clear(er) water – all good conditions for a beach trip. 

Eco-minded travelers will be thrilled not only with the scenery and wildlife viewing opportunities, but also with sustainability measure taken in the Lower Keys. Nonprofits like Reef Relief work to protect the region’s coral reefs, sandbars, creeks, and hardwood groves that are flush with marsh rabbits, herons, nighthawks and mangrove cuckoos. The Looe Key National Marine Sanctuary off Big Pine Key is a great place to take in 18th century shipwrecks and ocean life alike.

Key West is the end of the road, literally and figuratively. Closer to Havana than it is to Miami, this was once a port for pirates and today it continues to attract members of the Caribbean diaspora, eccentrics, artists, writers, and a large, influential LGBTQIA+ population. 

The eastern half of Key West is mainly modern businesses and larger hotels, while the western half includes Old Town, which is iconic Key West and flush with small local businesses that are an irreplaceable part of the city’s vibrant charm. Old Town is simply gorgeous – a grid of candy-colored Caribbean colonial homes all shaded by banyans and palm trees. The courtyard of Blue Heaven is a wonderful spot to grab some yellowtail snapper or local spiny lobster while you watch resident roosters (literally) rule their roost. 

Soak up local history amidst the faded headstones of the impressively gothic Key West Cemetery . Then, come the evening, prepare yourself for a Duval crawl along Duval Street, Key West’s main drag. There are tons of bars here, and even pre-pandemic, they all had outdoor lounging spaces. At sunset, a gaggle of street performers and buskers still put on one of the greatest regular outdoor performances in Florida at Mallory Square. Clear winter weather accentuates the sun as it dips below the water, a fitting finale to a Keys road trip.

When is the best time to visit the Florida Keys?

The best time to visit the Florida Keys depends on what you want to do and how well you cope with the heat. Summer never really ends in southern Florida , while the northern parts of the state experience a more temperate climate with more seasonal weather variation.

Northern Florida sits in a temperate climate zone with four seasons, including sub-zero temperatures and a chance of snow in winter. Central and southern areas like Miami and the Florida Keys have a tropical maritime climate and only two seasons: wet and dry).

The wet season is from June to November. Florida summers are generally very hot and humid with daily highs often reaching the low 90s. It’s particularly hot and muggy down south from mid-August to mid-October, and there's also a risk of hurricanes.

The dry season is from December to May. It's dry and sunny throughout most of the state with average highs of 75°F in the south and a cooler 64°F in the north.

December to March is typically the best time to visit for good weather. The temperature is pleasant and the humidity is bearable. The coldest month is January, but with highs of 75°F and lows of 50°F, it's still pretty warm.

December through February is the busiest time in the Keys. The subtropical weather is very alluring for folks in colder states of the USA who are looking for a winter vacation. Things quieten down at the end of February, but it’s back in full swing in March when throngs of college students arrive for spring break.

Despite the bigger crowds and higher prices, there’s a great vibe in the Keys during the high season with plenty of food, music and art festivals to enjoy, including:

July and August are the hottest months with average highs of 90°F, while September is the wettest. The peak of storm season from mid-August to mid-October coincides with the quietest period in the Keys.

If you don’t mind rocking the sweaty look and ducking in for cover during thunderstorms, you can still visit in the wet season. You might even bag cheaper prices at restaurants, hotels and tourist attractions. Ensure you check daily forecasts, follow the local weather advice and pack a rain poncho… you’ll need it!

April to late May is the sweet spot to avoid throngs of tourists and stormy weather. Winter sun seekers head home, spring breakers return to college and the hurricane season is yet to arrive.

Temperatures hover between a comfortable 72°F to 82°F in April and creep up to 86°F in May. The waters are also prime for swimming, snorkeling and diving.

A road trip through the Florida Keys is its own reward: a 113-mile journey across islands with some of the most jaw-droppingly gorgeous scenery you’ll ever lay eyes on. But amidst the topaz waters, diving pelicans and lush mangroves are a treasure trove of attractions that are educational, historical or just plain fun.

Here are a dozen of the best things to do in the Florida Keys, from top to bottom.

Two words: Underwater park. John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park is the first undersea park in the country… and the first place you should go when you arrive in the Florida Keys. There are endless ways to explore this aquatic attraction, including kayaking through the mangroves, snorkeling or scuba diving and setting out on a glass-bottom boat tour.

The African Queen Canal Cruise is another fun way to explore Key Largo. Hop aboard the famed vessel—yes, it’s the one made famous by the 1951 movie starring Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn—and embark on a 90-minute sightseeing cruise departing from Marina del Mar. Dinner cruises are also available. 

Theater of the Sea combines the pizzazz of a marine park with the charm of a family-owned attraction.

In addition to rotating exhibits, the museum’s permanent collection of photos and memorabilia highlights the area’s Native American life, shipwrecks and more with photos, models and artifacts.

Love dolphins? Do a deep dive into the life of the aquatic mammals at the Dolphin Research Center on Grassy Key, near Marathon. Watch the dolphin and sea lion shows, chat with trainers and cool off at the sprayground. For next-level fun, enroll your tween or teen in Dolphin Camp, or splurge on a Fantasy Dolphin Day to live out all your swimming-with-dolphins dreams.

BIG PINE KEY

Secluded Bahia Honda State Park , located on Big Pine Key, is home to more than 150 species of rare flora and fauna. But its three unspoiled beaches aren’t only for the birds; they’re also a great place for shelling, geocaching, snorkeling and other low-key activities. The park is also sought after for camping, with accommodations ranging from primitive camp sites to glamping cabins.

There’s no shortage of animal encounters in the Keys. But for one of the most peculiar, you’ll have to visit the National Key Deer Refuge on Big Pine Key. The endangered creatures stand no more than 32 inches tall and are found only in the lower Florida Keys, so hike, bike or kayak through the preserve and keep your eyes peeled for these beautiful creatures.

Pay your respects to one of Key West’s most legendary residents with a visit to the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum . As you stroll through the gardens and pet the six-toed cats—descendants of the writer’s own pets—imagine the Nobel Prize winner working on manuscripts when he lived in the house during the most prolific decade of his career, the 1930s. In the bookstore and gift shop, take home a souvenir to serve as your own muse.

The Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory is located on Duval Street, but it’s about as far away from the famous thoroughfare’s excesses as you can get. Whether you’re looking for family-friendly fun or you just need someplace to catch your breath, a few hours inside this glass-enclosed conservatory surrounded by butterflies and birds should do the trick.

When the sun goes down, the fun heats up at Mallory Square , home of Key West’s nightly sunset celebration. Jugglers, tightrope walkers, sword swallowers, buskers and other colorful characters put on a family-friendly show for your entertainment—and hopefully, for your generous tips.

Sure, it’s touristy. But no visit to Key West would be complete without a photo op at the Southernmost Point . The oversized buoy landmark represents the lowest spot on the map of the Continental United States.

DRY TORTUGAS

Just when you thought the Keys were as remote as you could get, there’s Dry Tortugas National Park . This conglomerate of islands 70 miles west of Key West is accessible only by boat or seaplane. But not to worry; even if you don’t have your own transportation, you can ride the Yankee Freedom ferry from Key West to Garden Key and still explore the park’s historic Fort Jefferson; snorkel, dive or swim in the clear waters; enjoy breathtaking birdwatching; and pitch your tent under the stars.

2. Wesley House Family Services Holiday Village And BeLighted Bike Ride

The second annual Holiday Village and BeLighted Bike Ride is on December 2 in Key West. There will be food trucks, crafts for the kids, a best bike contest, and photos with Santa. The BeLighted Bike Ride is a parade of bikes up Duval Street all decked out with holiday lights and decorations. 

3. Florida Keys Holiday Fest

It may not snow in the Keys, but there will be a 30-ton snow hill at the 18th annual Florida Keys Holiday Fest in Islamorada. On December 2, snow will also fall during the lighting of the 35-foot-tall tree! The fest also includes a holiday parade, Santa’s Sweet Shoppe with gourmet desserts and coffee, a holiday bazaar, a gingerbread house contest, and more. 

4. Lighting Of The Lighthouse

A truly unique Keys tradition for the holidays, the annual lighting of the iconic Middle Keys lighthouse takes place on December 3 in Marathon. Hosted by the Faro Blanco Resort & Yacht Club, families can enjoy food, music, live performances, and a visit from Santa. 

5. Key West City Hometown Holiday Parade 

Santa will make an appearance at the Key West City Hometown Holiday Parade on December 3. This wildly popular parade features local marching bands, school groups, and floats. It kicks off at Bayview Park’s White Street and Truman Avenue.

Hi Everyone,

I am trying to figure out where to stay/visit in the keys over xmas (about 7 days with xmas in between those days). We will be driving into the keys. I've been to FTL before, but never the keys.

I checked out each of the areas of the Keys online, but frankly couldn't really see a difference except that Key West seems to be a pretty happening place. Key West does look cool to us, but I am sure all the good mid-range priced places are already booked up for xmas.

So anyway, we'd really like to just relax/walk on the beach. We are in our 30s (able bodied) and have no kids so it will just be the 2 of us. Truthfully, I'd consider it an awesome vacation if I could just hang in the sun on the beach with a cocktail, eat good food, enjoy some hot tubbing and basically have a romantic time w/ my man.

But realistically considering what we both like, I think we would be interested in going out and hearing some good music too (not crazy loud college student music though). We might be interested in biking, snorkeling, and/or learning stuff about the local wildlife/ecosystem etc. We generally like to learn new info (we tend to go to museums and art galleries when on vaca.) I am sorry to report we are also vegetarian (yes that means we do not eat seafood :) so any advice on where we can get some good veggie grub would be quite literally awesome.

So if you can offer any insights as far as if you think Key Largo is the place to stay for us. And of course please feel free to recommend somewhere different, places/things that we absolutely should not miss etc. we would forever be in your debt. Thanks!

First thing - if you want walks on the beach - scratch the Keys. The Keys are BEAUTIFUL and surrounded by crystal clear water, but we don't have many beaches. The ones we do have are small.

Too ambitious to see all the Keys in just 7 days? Not at all. You'll want more time, but you can see a lot in that time.

Many love KW, I think it's good for a day. The rest of the Keys are a bit more water oriented. IMO.

Most restaurants do offer something for the vegetarian. And many will accomodate even if you don't see it directly on the menu. Things can be changed - THAT being said. Keep in mind that the week you are looking at is THE busiest week in the Keys. So, restaurants will be busy and special requests may be slow. Pack your patience that week before you leave the house. Be ready to wait at most restaurants and activities. Also, remember, the Keys aren't like this all year long, mostly Xmas week and late Feb.

Crane Point Hammock is a great stop to learn about our local wildlife and eco system.

Thanks so much! Yes, I have looked at that rental site. The place I found was of that nature (small house rental). We are used to not always finding veggie foods while on vacation so I figured having our own kitchen might be helpful to us. I have read about the man-made beaches on the Keys, but I can't think of where else to go in Dec. to get some sun. I'm afraid the rest of FL will be too cold and I don't want to leave the country (but I guess I haven't booked yet so if you have suggestion other than the Keys I'm open). I am hoping the Keys beaches will be sufficient though. Perhaps I can take a long walk on...the roads/bike paths?

Key Largo is a great place, it's just that the deeper you go into the keys, the better.

If you stop in Key largo, you will miss the beauty of the drive, which IMHO, starts in Tavernier or Islamorada .

With 7 days, I would try to arrange a day or two in KW. It's really the kind of place where you want to spend an evening, have a drink or two. Also, if you like the Key Largo lodging you found, then book it for the rest of the days. You'll be able to drive to the other Keys as needed or wanted. But in KL you'll find lots to see and do as well.

Let us know what you decide.. we too are going to the keys in December. We were thinking Key Largo because we have three divers with us. And we are definitely doing the VRBO thing. There are still a ton of good places with availability and we need a house.

Florida Keys

In the Florida Keys, you can visit 44 islands. You can reach many of those islands via 42 bridges.

So, you have options when you choose the Keys for a vacation in Florida in December.

Key West is the most popular destination in the Florida Keys. You can fly directly into the Key West International Airport.

Or if you want to see other islands like Key Largo, you can drive from the Miami International Airport.

The average high temperature in Key West is 77 degrees in December. This temperature is perfect for exploring Duval Street. Or participating in water activities at one of the white sandy beaches.

You may also decide to snuggle with the six-toed cats at Ernest Hemingway’s house. Just don’t forget to grab those family photos down at the buoy. This marks the southernmost point in the continental United States.

And spend time in Mallory Square as the sun sets. This is one of the best places to watch the setting sun. The whole family will also get to see all the street performers until it is time for the sun to go down.

If you have extra time during your vacation, consider visiting Dry Tortugas National Park. You will see part of the Key West Bank Reef, which is one of the best coral reefs, there. I can help you make all the arrangements when I plan your vacation.

Crystal River

One of the best places to stay in Florida in December is Crystal River. This river is known as the Manatee Capital of the World. Manatees are everywhere in this river during the winter months.

You can kayak amongst the manatees. There are also tours that allow you to get up close with the manatees, but remember you are not allowed to touch them!

After your swim, head over to Three Sisters Springs. This nature refuge has a boardwalk near the springs. There is always plenty of marine life to see near the boardwalk.

Another popular destination in Florida is Naples. Luxury hotels line the beautiful beaches. Your family will also find plenty of vacation rentals to choose from for your stay.

When you are not at the beach, you can visit the hundreds of shops and restaurants in Naples. Most of your days will be spent down on the white sand beaches. Everyone can kayak, swim, or head out for a boat ride.

If you have a golf lover in your family, the golf courses will keep them occupied for a few hours.

This is also the perfect time of year to visit because you can watch the Christmas boat parades. You won’t find those back in the colder states in December!

Your family can choose from any of the Walt Disney World Parks. Magic Kingdom is the most popular for families. Universal Studios Florida is another possibility. There’s even a water park or two in Central Florida. Enjoy the Merry Christmas party at these theme parks. And watch the palm trees sway, despite being away from the ocean.

At a luxury resort at Disney, you can see full-size gingerbread houses. There are also miniature trains and winter wonderland villages.

Oh, and if you are not really into theme parks, you have options. One of those options is driving to Cape Canaveral. There you can visit the Kennedy Space Center.

Cocoa Beach is not too far from Orlando and is the perfect place to add a beach town visit to your Florida vacation.

Fort Lauderdale

Relaxing is easy when you decide to head to Fort Lauderdale in December. Wandering around the Venice-style waterways will allow the stress to melt away.

The holiday highlights in Fort Lauderdale include the Seminole Hard Rock Winterfest Boat Parade and Christmas on Las Olas. The latter has a two-story mountain covered in ice. It is perfect for sledding.

A day or two can be spent exploring the historic downtown of Fernandina Beach. Head out into nature at Big and Little Talbot Island State Park. Or go horseback riding at Amelia Island State Park.

During the month of December, you can attend the Dickens on Centre Festival. Watch the lighted Christmas parade or take a holiday home tour.

If you stay until New Year’s, you can attend the New Year’s Eve Shrimp Drop. This festival is full of food, music, shopping, and fireworks over the marina.

West Palm Beach

One of the first things you will want to do when you arrive in West Palm Beach in December is check out the Christmas tree made out of sand. This sandy Christmas tree can be found on the West Palm Beach Great Lawn.

Santa makes an appearance there on occasion too. Plus, your family can listen to stories, watch Christmas movies, and play mini golf.

Over in Rosemary Square, the snow falls every evening. Go shopping at that time to get the full holiday experience in West Palm Beach.

Try to book your vacation for when the Palm Beach Holiday Boat Parade takes place. It is a 2 hour event that starts in North Palm Beach and ends in Jupiter.

Marco Island

Anna Maria Island

Anna Maria Island offers a small-town charm. There is easy access to everything on the island. A short walk is all that is needed most of the time. So, you may not need to drive anywhere once you get there.

I’m sure the kids won’t miss heading out on a road trip all the time!

Bradenton Beach, Bean Point, and the Anna Maria City Pier are three places everyone seems to go on this island.

Vero Beach is one of the best places to stay in Florida in December. The kids can walk quickly on the Vero Beach Scenic Coastal Walk. Okay, so they’ll run. At least you’re all outside inhaling all that fresh ocean air!

Shopping for souvenirs will be easy when you go to the boutiques. Although, everyone will also want to head over to McKee Botanical Garden to see the display of lights.

Fort Myers is a popular destination for families all year long. This area has some of the best beaches in the state. Staying at a beach resort down there may allow you to stretch out on sunny days.

You may want to explore the Fort Myers River District when your family is not at the beach. The J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge is another option.

While Crystal River is an excellent place to see manatees, you can also see them in Fort Myers. Head over to Manatee Park and watch the manatees from the observation deck or go kayaking near them.

The month of December is a great time to visit the Edison and Ford Winter Estates. This is when they offer their holiday tours. Lights are everywhere on these estates. See them all inside and out before enjoying the live music and food.

Other fun activities the kids will enjoy include the Holiday Express in Lakes Regional Park and the Fort Myers Beach Christmas Boat Parade.

Everglades National Park

Everglades National Park is a short drive from the Miami International Airport. You can also easily drive to Everglades National Park from Fort Myers, Fort Lauderdale, and Naples.

Your family will definitely get rid of the winter blues when you reach the Everglades. These tropical wetlands and mangrove forests are full of wildlife.

Head over to the Anhinga Trail to see sea turtles, alligators, and birds. Go kayaking on the Wilderness Waterway. Or head out on a bike on a trail in Long Pine Key or Shark Valley.

Another family-friendly activity is taking an airboat tour.

Daytona Beach

Daytona Beach is on the eastern coast of Florida. You probably won’t find warm waters in the Atlantic Ocean in December in Daytona.

Your family may spend most of your time exploring the history of Nascar racing. Just remember, there won’t be any Nascar racing at the Daytona International Speedway. However, you may find other races – or practices – taking place.

Visiting the Museum of Arts and Sciences or Roots Family Museum are two ways to spend a few hours.

There is usually a type of festival going on every weekend in Daytona during the winter months too. Those festivals usually include food, music, and art.

St. Petersburg

St. Petersburg, or St. Pete’s, is one of the popular cities on the Gulf Coast. This cultural destination on the Gulf of Mexico does experience chilly days in December. Thankfully, there’s plenty to do when you can’t swim at the white-sand beaches.

The Dali Museum is a great place to visit on chilly and rainy days.

Since this is the Sunshine State, you should find some sunny days in December. Embrace the warm weather by going to Sunken Gardens. These gardens are full of tropical birds, flowers, and plants. If you’re lucky, you may spot an ancient snapping turtle.

Oh, and if you don’t want to travel all the way to Orlando to visit a theme park, you will be happy to know there is one nearby. Busch Gardens is over in Tampa Bay. That is a short drive from St. Petersburg.

Since Boca Raton is on the Atlantic side of the state, you won’t be spending your entire vacation at the beach in December. However, you will still want to head down to the white sandy beaches a few times during your visit.

You can explore the Morikami Museum or the Japanese Gardens between beach adventures.

Nature lovers will want to see the Daggerwing Nature Center. You can wander along the two boardwalk trails to see turtles, alligators, and many birds there. You will see butterflies here as well. Including the Ruddy Daggerwing butterfly!

During December, you can check out the Lights Holiday Festival. It includes snow flurries, snow globe photos, train rides, and holiday stage shows. You may even want to purchase some gifts from the holiday vendors.

The Christmas spirit is everywhere in Siesta Key in December. The entire family will love shopping at the annual holiday market.

Just don’t skip the SantaFest Celebration. It’s a lot of fun!

Turtle Beach, Crescent Beach, and Siesta Beach are the best beaches in this area. They all offer crystal clear waters for swimming and other water sports. The whole family will love heading out on jet skis.

The best time to visit Miami is in December. South Beach still has a party atmosphere. Miami Beach offers plenty of warm water. And Coral Gables Miracle Mile offers some of the best holiday shopping.

Clearwater Beach

Clearwater Beach is not too far from Tampa. This Southwest Florida destination is one of the most popular places for families.

The water temperature won’t be warm in December. But you can still head to the beach to build a sandcastle or walk along Pier 60.

Nearby outdoor activities include kayaking through mangroves on Caladesi Island. Keep an eye out for armadillos on this island. You may be lucky enough to spot one!

Your road trip guide to the Florida Keys

One of the best state road trips in America has to be the sun-kissed drive from Key Largo to Key West in the Florida Keys. This road, known as the Florida Keys Overseas Highway, takes you through a 125-mile island chain that begins just south of Miami. It hopscotches over 42 bridges and five islands, and has turquoise waters stretching in every direction into the Atlantic Ocean, Florida Bay and Gulf of Mexico.

So if you're looking for the perfect Atlantic Coast road trip or cheap beach vacation , look no further than this road trip guide from Key Largo to Key West. And if you'd rather travel from Key West to Key Largo, rest easy—the route works either way. There are shuttles that run from Key Largo to Key West, but keep in mind, you'd be missing out on all the fun in between.

By the way, once you embark on the Florida Keys Overseas Highway, you'll notice that many sites along the way use mile markers (MM) in their address. We use those mile marker points in this story to help you navigate the drive.

Mile marker: 108–90

The first of the Florida Keys you'll hit after driving about an hour south from Miami en route from Key Largo to Key West is, well, Key Largo. Often referred to as the Dive Capital of the World, Key Largo includes one must-see stop: John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park (MM 102.5), the first underwater preserve in the United States.

Experienced and novice snorkelers and SCUBA divers will be enthralled by the teeming marine life that lives just below the water's surface, like parrot fish, barracudas and sea turtles. More experienced divers enjoy exploring the USS Spiegel Grove, one of the largest ships ever intentionally sunk to create an artificial reef where pretty fish can thrive.

Back on dry land, travelers can wander nearly six miles of trails at Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park, home to more than 80 species of plants and animals. You can also peruse the work of local artists at myriad galleries.

Best beach: Cannon Beach, found within John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, has shallow waters that are perfect for wading. You may even spot cannons and anchors on the beach that remain from a 1715 Spanish shipwreck.

Where to eat: Dig into the catch of the day at The Fish House, Key Largo Conch House or Snook's Bayside Restaurant & Grand Tiki Bar, some of the best traditional restaurants in the area. If you'd rather turf than surf, check out Jimmy Johnson's Big Chill.

Where to stay: If you can't get enough of the underwater world, stay at Jules' Undersea Lodge , the world's first underwater hotel. If you'd rather keep dry, try the adults-only Bungalows Key Largo .

Mile marker: 90–63

Next up en route from Key Largo to Key West is the fisherman's paradise known as Islamorada. Considered the Sport Fishing Capital of the World, it's where backcountry sport fishing and saltwater fly-fishing got their start. Countless seasoned boat captains are ready for hire to take you out to catch the wahoo, marlin, mahi-mahi and tuna that swim in these waters.

There's an even quirkier way to interact with fish here: hand-feeding the tarpon off the docks of Robbie's Marina (MM 77.5). Since 1976, countless Keys visitors have stopped to feed them, and more than 100 kinds of fish gather at the docks for their daily snacks. Feeding the fishies there is so popular, it's been named the No. 1 activity in all the Florida Keys.

Islamorada is also a terrific spot to kitesurf, stand-up paddleboard, go for a hike or take a bicycle ride. Stop by the Laura Quinn Wild Bird Sanctuary, where injured or displaced birdies now make their homes. Or visit the History of Diving Museum, which boasts one of the world's largest collections of diving helmets.

Best beach: Anne's Beach is popular with families (and dogs) because of its shallow waters and lack of waves. Take a walk along the boardwalk or enjoy a picnic at one of the covered tables.

Where to eat: For a quintessential casual Florida Keys meal, go to the Hungry Tarpon. If you want more elegant fare, make reservations at Chef Michael's for creatively inspired local dishes.

Where to stay: When it's time to lay your head for the night, check in to one of the new oceanfront suites at Cheeca Lodge & Spa , or your own cottage at The Moorings Village & Spa .

Mile marker: 63–40

Marathon is the island chain's top boating destination—and for good reason. The area boasts nearly 2,400 boat slips and plenty of facilities to accommodate sailors passing through. But you don't need your own boat to enjoy Marathon and its waters.

For a truly different experience, hop on over to Cruisin' Tikis and have a floating tiki bar adventure. Sunset, mangrove and harbor cruises are all available, as is a swim-stop cruise for a chance to jump into the water.

While you're here, you should also visit Pigeon Key, an island that is accessible by boat, trolley or walking the 2.2-mile Old Seven Mile Bridge. It has a museum to explore, either on a guided tour or on your own. The Bridge is open for walking, running, bicycling, rollerblading and, of course, watching the killer sunrises and sunsets.

Best beach: Sombrero Beach is one of the prettiest beaches in the Florida Keys—not to mention one of the best beaches in Florida . And it's not just popular with humans; sea turtles nest here between April and October.

Where to eat: For any meal, stop by Castaway, which has been serving guests for more than 70 years. Or make a night of it at Hide Away Café, which has an extensive wine list.

Where to stay: The Faro Blanco Resort & Yacht Club is set on the waterfront and gives you a taste of marina life. Lime Tree Bay Resort on Long Key has spacious townhomes for rent.

The Lower Keys

Mile marker: 40–4

After crossing the Old Seven Mile Bridge out of Marathon, you'll find yourself in the Lower Keys, where natural habitats and wildlife refuges thrive. It's no wonder this part of the Florida Keys is known as the Natural Keys. You might even want to consider taking an electric vehicle on this road trip so you don't disturb the animals.

Your best chance to spot a native Key deer, a subspecies of the Virginia white-tailed deer that somehow made its way south, may be in the National Key Deer Refuge, comprised of 9,200 acres stretching from Bahia Honda Key to Sugarloaf Key on the edge of the Gulf of Mexico. More than 20 endangered and threatened plant and animal species can be found within the refuge. Take a quiet walk at dusk or dawn for your best chance to glimpse a Key deer, or join a ranger-led tour to learn more about the area.

Aside from all the eco-friendly fun, Stock Island is well worth a stop. Their maritime history goes back generations, and the marina is filled with shrimping and fishing boats. Artists have been flocking to Stock Island, too, and share their works in galleries dotted across the small island.

Best beach: The shallow, clear water and white sand at Calusa Beach make it a locals' favorite. The beach is a perfect spot for snorkeling too.

Where to eat: In addition to the freshest of seafood, Big Pine Rooster serves up ribs and a special-recipe meatloaf. Or sip like the locals at No Name Pub, located on Big Pine Key.

Where to stay: Consider the waterfront Sugarloaf Lodge , stay in an Airstream at Big Pine Key Resort  or pop a tent on one of the reserved campsites at Bahia Honda State Park.

Mile marker: 4–0

You've made it to the end! Closer to Cuba than Miami, Key West is known for its nightly sunset celebrations, party atmosphere and laissez-faire vibe, but it's really so much more.

If you're a writer or bookworm, you'll certainly want to make plans to visit the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum, where you should keep an eye out for the famous six-toed cats. Then wander through Key West's Bahama Village, a 12-block area of historic homes and restaurants.

Consider a day trip to Dry Tortugas National Park, about 70 miles west of Key West in the Gulf of Mexico, where you'll find some hidden gems . The island, accessible by boat or seaplane, is popular for snorkeling and feeling like you're on your own private island, not to mention touring the Civil War–era fort.

Best beach: Fort Zachary Taylor Beach—or Fort Zach, as locals call it—predates the Civil War and boasts the island's very best sandy stretch.

Where to eat: No visit to Key West is complete without a meal at Blue Heaven, where you can dine with wandering roosters for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Or snag a spot on the tiny balcony at Santiago's Bodega for tapas and flowing wine.

Where to stay: The boutique Gardens Hotel , the adults-only Kimpton Hotels Ridley House  or the new Capitana Key West , to name a few. Wherever you stay, you're sure to find your place in Key West, and it's likely you'll follow so many others' lead and start planning your return visit before you even leave.

Art and history in the Florida Keys

Road-tripping from Key Largo to Key West, it's easy to appreciate all the natural beauty. That said, the Keys aren't just a terrific destination for eco-travelers, but artists and history buffs too.

It's easy for artists to find inspiration throughout the Florida Keys. Fortunately for road-trippers, there are many spots to stop and admire their work. One of the largest artists' communities in the Florida Keys is Stock Island in the Lower Keys, just about three miles from the commercial area of Key West. What was once a shrimping boat marina is now a blend of fishermen and painters, sculptors and other artisans who have created an energetic and supportive community.

For history buffs, in addition to Pigeon Key in Marathon and the Civil War–era Fort Jefferson in Dry Tortugas National Park, other must-stops in Key West include the Audubon House & Tropical Gardens, Harry S. Truman Little White House and the Southernmost Point in the continental United States.

Planning your Florida Keys road trip

Now that you're inspired to hit the road, it's time to start planning. After budgeting for a road trip , your next step is to decide whether you will travel south from Key Largo to Key West, or north from Key West to Key Largo. Or maybe you'll opt for a roundtrip.

If you're starting off in Key Largo, it's important to note that the Florida Keys Overseas Highway begins at the Miami-Dade/Monroe County line. So if you're flying to Florida, Miami International Airport (MIA) is the way to go. If you begin in Key West, the airport (EYW) is on the island.
