How to Make a Travel Sewing Kit

How to make a travel sewing kit

How to Make a Travel Sewing Kit.  I always travel with a sewing kit because you just never know when you are going to need it.  The plastic ones always break and your sewing supplies end up all over your suitcase so I wanted to make one that was fabric and would protect my small sewing supplies.  I love to sew travel projects and came across this pattern from allpeoplequilt.com and decided to give it a try.  I wasn’t pleased with the instructions and thought a picture tutorial would make this travel sewing kit project easier.

As usual, I used remnants for this entire project but if you want something special head over to Fabric.com or Hobby Lobby to select the perfect fabric for you. This post contains affiliate links that if you click on them and make a purchase I may receive a small commission at no extra charge to you.

This is a beginner sewing project although it can be a little fidgety it does not require advanced skills.  I would recommend a good quilting cotton for this project.

What you will Need:

  • Travel Sewing Kit Pattern
  • Remnants or 3 fat quarters in different coordinating colors
  • 3″ square of felt
  • 3″ square of cotton batting
  • Embroidery Floss

Step 1: How to Make a Travel Sewing Kit

Cut out the pattern pieces and tape the two main pattern pieces together lining up the dots.  You should have 1 long rounded pattern piece and a smaller rounded pattern piece.  From the smaller pattern piece trace out and cut the shape for the needle patch. The original pattern included yoyos for decoration.  I didn’t bother with them but if you would like to add them there is a round pattern piece for this purpose.

Step 2: How to Make a Travel Sewing Kit

Cut the travel sewing kit pattern as follows:

Outer Fabric:

  • 1 of the main pattern A
  • 3 of pattern B if you are doing the yoyos

Interior Fabric:

  • 1 of main Pattern A
  • 1 of Pattern C

Pocket Fabric:

  • 1 — 1 1/2″ x 22″ for tie (I used my exterior fabric for this but you can choose any fabric you like.
  • 3 — 3 1/4″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles
  • 1 pattern D for the needle patch

Step 3: How to Make a Travel Sewing Kit

Press the 4 1/2″ side of the pocket rectangles down 1/2″.  This will be the top of each pocket.  Press the straight edge of the rounded pocket in the same fashion.  Top stitch 1/4″ along each folded edge.

How to make a travel sewing kit

Step 4: How to Make a Travel Sewing Kit

Make the tie  by pressing the strip in half lengthwise.  Open up the strip and fold the edges toward the middle and press.  Fold in half and top stitch along the length.  Tie the ends in a knot and trim excess fabric.

How to make a travel sewing kit

Step 5: How to Make a Travel Sewing Kit

Using a Frixion heat erasable pen, mark the location for the pockets and the stitching lines from the pattern onto the interior pattern piece A. With right sides together, pin the bottom pocket to interior piece A.  Stitch along the stitching line then fold the pocket over right side up and press.  Do this for all three rectangular pockets.

How to make a travel sewing kit

Step 6: How to Make a Travel Sewing Kit

With right sides together pin the rounded pocket to the bottom of the interior Piece A.  Using a 1/8th inch seam allowance, baste all of the pockets along the straight sides.

Step 7: How to Make a Travel Sewing Kit

Fold the tie in half and baste the fold to the right side of Interior piece A on the non pocket end.

How to make a travel sewing kit

Step 8: How to Make a Travel Sewing Kit

With right sides together place the Interior Piece A and the exterior Piece A together. Make sure that the tie is on the inside.  It is good idea to push it into the top pocket so it doesn’t get caught in the seam allowance.  Sew the two pieces together using a 1/4″ seam allowance and leaving a 2″ opening on one side.

Step 9: How to Make a Travel Sewing Kit

Turn the whole piece right sides out through the opening you left in the side.

How to make a travel sewing kit

Step 10: How to Make a Travel Sewing Kit

Layer to batting and the felt and hand sew the two pieces to the pocket end of Interior piece A making sure that you only sew through the top pf the pocket.  This will be the needle patch.

Step 11: How to Make a Travel Sewing Kit

Hand sew the opening closed using ladder stitch.  Add some sewing supplies and roll up and you have now finished your travel sewing kit.

Get excited to vacation with these travel sewing projects. These are great beginner projects to organize in the car or airplane.

I love going on trips in the summertime and when my kids have breaks from school. We have so much fun playing, hiking, swimming, and biking wherever we go.

I’ve put a big list together of all the things you can sew for traveling at any time of the year. Some of these sewing projects are great for playing games, some are for organizing, and some are for sleeping. A lot of these have free PDF sewing patterns to help you make something to make travel better!

Travel Sewing Projects

What is a PDF sewing pattern?

A PDF pattern is a sewing pattern designed on the computer and organized so that it can be printed on several letter or A4 size pieces of paper.

I love using PDF sewing patterns because if the pattern gets ruined or if my children or I changed sizes, I can always print it again. It’ll never be destroyed since I have a digital version!

How do you use a PDF sewing pattern?

Open the PDF on a computer and click print. When printing make sure that the scaling is set to 100% or no scaling so that the pattern prints at the correct size.

Once the pattern is printed it can be taped together to get the full size. Then the pattern can be cut for each pattern piece size or individual sizes can be traced so that the pattern can be used again and again. Learn how to use PDF sewing patterns .

12 Travel-Related Sewing Projects

Travel related sewing projects to make before your next trip. Travel themed sewing ideas, sewing crafts for travel, Sewing for Travel ideas, Travel themed sewing crafts passport holder coin purse travel accessory holder

How many of you purchased a sewing machine while in lockdown? I got a sewing machine from my mom for my birthday, and have been sewing fun crafts ever since! These 12 Travel-Related Sewing Projects are a great way to prepare for your next travelventures. If you’re looking for practical things to sew, why not make something to take on your next trip?

The sewing projects listed in this post make great travel gifts, and are sure to help you organize and accessories for your next trip.

Travel related sewing projects to make before your next trip. Travel themed sewing ideas, sewing crafts for travel, Sewing for Travel ideas, Travel themed sewing crafts passport holder coin purse travel accessory holder

Beginner Travel-Related Sewing Projects

If you’re just getting your feet wet with sewing like I am, let’s start with some basic travel-related sewing projects. They might be easy to make, but they’re just as practical as some of the more intermediate and advanced travel-themed sewing projects!

1. Drawstring Bags

Making drawstring bags is the most basic of sewing projects – I learned how to do this in 7th grade during my home economics class. It also happens to be a very practical travel-related sewing project! Having bags of different colors and sizes is great to help you pack and organize for your next trip.

Small drawstring bags are great for keeping medicines and other loose objects in one place. Medium bags can be use to pack socks and underwear, and large bags can hold shoes and other bulky items

2. Coin Purse

If your next travels are to a country where you expect to use a lot of cash and coins (like Japan for example) have a coin purse handy.

A trick my dad uses when traveling is just opening up his coin-filled wallet to the cashier when paying, and they pick out the coins that you owe. That’s much easier than mulling over each and every unfamiliar coin until you reach the correct sum!  Using a handmade coin purse that opens up like the one in the sewing tutorial would make this process even easier.

3. Reusable Shopping Bag

We should all try to reduce our travel footprint by traveling sustainably, and a step in the right direction is bringing your own reusable shopping bag. Not only odes this reduce the plastic pollution in the country you’re visiting, it’s also just generally handy to carry around anyways.

Reusable shopping bags that fold up into small squares can be tucked into your pocket or purse until you need them (like if you buy one too many souvenirs for example).

4. Roll-up Towel for Toiletries

This is a perfect travel-related sewing project that would also make a thoughtful travel gift. This sewing idea makes packing for travel a breeze, and mitigates against the yucky bathroom water that sticks around on toiletries while in transit.

Pick out your favorite fabric, a fuzzy towel, and start sewing this super easy to make travel-related sewing project.

5. Soap holder

Following the theme of toiletry holders, try making this soap holder with the towel scraps from the project above.

If you’re a bar soap, bar shampoo and/or bar conditioner type of person (which are on my sustainable travel packing list ) make these adorable soap holders for your next travel-related sewing project.

Intermediate Travel-Related Sewing Projects

6. passport, vaccine card, and boarding pass holder.

This is another classic travel-related sewing project that’s super handy and easy to customize. When passing through airports, it’s important to keep all of your important documents in an easy to reach place. An item that holds everything at once is a hand luggage essential for flying.

Craft this passport and other documents holder so whether you need to show your vaccine card, swipe your credit card, or pull out your boarding pass, everything is in once place. If you’re the type to leave things in the security bins on accident, sew on a wrist strap too.

7. Cord Holder

I received a cord holder as a travel gift years ago, and I still use it to keep me organized on the road. Add a handmade element to this convenient travel item by making one yourself. Think about your go-to electronic accessories for travel, and make sure you sew a place for each of their chargers.

Add this handy cord holder to your travel sewing project list!

8. Zippered Bags

One step up from the drawstring bag in the beginner’s travel-themed sewing projects section above is a zippered bag. These aren’t just for pens and pencils in school, you can use them for your makeup, toiletries, jewelry, and more when traveling.

9. Toilet Paper roll holder

Here’s a quirky travel-themed sewing project: If your next trip consists of going off-grid or into the woods, consider crafting this toilet paper roll holder. I wish I had one of these back when I was camping all the time in Wyoming. I wouldn’t have had to use my campfire soot-covered hands to hold the toilet paper, or set it down directly in the dirt.

An attached wristband or even longer, a neckband, would make holding the communal toilet paper roll a little more sanitary.

Advanced Travel-Related Sewing Projects

10. hanging bathroom caddy.

A hanging bathroom caddy is one of my long-term travel essentials , and an item I bring on all of my travelventures. The bag perfect for using at hostels, campsites, or anywhere else with shared bathrooms. It keeps all toiletries in one place and off the wet ground. Crafting it with waterproof fabric will also keep your other belongings dry!

11. Travel accessory holder

An personalized accessory holder is a perfect travel-themed sewing project. You know better than anyone else what type of jewelry you want to bring and wear during your next travels. Customize this accessory holder to make sure there’s a special place for everything!

12. Anti-pickpocket bag

One of the main concerns when traveling to unknown locations is the risk of getting pick-pocketed. Sew yourself this anti-pickpocket bag that has a zipper opening behind your back!

It’ll keep all of your belongings and valuables safe the next time you’re in a crowded place.

A vinyl coated 5 foot measuring tape, numerous round headed pins with pin cushion, 3 thimbles in different sizes, a variety of 30 needles plus needle threading tools, a practical seam ripper, 3 thimbles and a large pair of dressmaking scissors complete the package. There are a whopping 166 pieces included in total.

There is also a sufficiently long 5 foot flexible measuring tape, a decent pair of 8 inch angled scissors, a seam ripper, and a metal thimble to protect delicate fingertips.

The Singer 1512 Beginners Sewing Kit has a choice of 11 spools of quality polyester thread in different colors, and 100 pins and 10 various needles – plus a cute tomato shaped pin cushion to keep them organized in one place.

  • Great for kids or adult beginners
  • Makes a great gift
  • Has all the necessary basics
  • Pin cushion, gauge and pencils are a nice addition
  • Ideal for everyday and emergency repairs
  • Bent scissors cut well
  • Fun pink color
  • Plastic pouch is not sturdy
  • Not suitable for bigger or more demanding sewing projects

Singer travel sewing kit

The mini storage box is constructed from hard plastic to protect the contents, and comes with a transparent lid to enable you to easily see everything inside at a glance.

At around 4″ x 3″ x 1″ this kit can be taken with you anywhere in your purse or travel luggage, or if you already have a sewing box it will make a useful addition.

Due to its small size, there’s a little less variety in this kit than some of the others on our list, but it nevertheless has the basics covered with 20 mini spools of thread in a mixture of colors, some buttons and snap fasteners, a measuring tape, plastic thimble, pointed mini scissors, some safety pins — plus some needles with accompanying needle threader and a foam pin cushion.

  • Ideal for repairs on the go, everything is at hand
  • Super low price
  • Makes a great stocking filler
  • Better variety than other miniature sewing kits
  • Performs well for simple tasks
  • Convenient, compact and portable

  • Scissors are a little ineffective for some tasks
  • Needles are tiny and can be difficult to use

Artika sewing kit

The compact, wallet style case is made from leatherette fabric, and features a zip closure and elastic retainers for each item in the kit.

There are many tools that you would expect to see included in this kit, such as safety pins, shirt buttons, metal snap fasteners, a nice needle set with a great selection of sizes and needle holes, needle threading tool, measuring tape, smart stainless steel thread scissors, white chalk pencil, and seam ripper.

There are over 100 pieces in total, making this a superb project kit for anybody looking to stock up on a variety of sewing supplies to carry out repairs. Or if you know somebody who loves sewing – it’s a great gift idea, too!

  • Tools are good quality for the price
  • Very versatile – includes some unusual tools
  • Small and light
  • Good for travel or in the office
  • Useful for all age groups and those new to sewing
  • Handy for emergencies
  • There are no regular long pins included
  • Measuring tape quality is not so great

Embroidex mini sewing kit

One of the best things about this kit is the snazzy, hot pink zip-up case which uses elasticized holders to keep all the items in place and nicely organised — it really makes a statement!

As part of this kit there’s a nice pair of small scissors in quality stainless steel, a supple tape measure, a sturdy little seam ripper, a good selection of needles plus two needle threaders to make threading easier, a solid metal thimble, 3 small plastic buttons, two pearl headed pins, and 12 spools of thread in an attractive range of colors.

  • Colorful and fun, as well as practical
  • Lightweight and small – easy to store and to carry

Inspired by the idea of getting crafty and sewing your own projects but not sure where to start?

If you’re bursting with creativity and itching to start stitching but daunted by the myriad different sewing tools and accessories available, a sewing kit is a great way to get all the essentials you need to get you off the starting blocks.

Sewing craft kits for kids or adults make great presents too.

It’s hard to know what you’re going to need for any given project, but here is our rundown of things that you can expect to find in a good sewing kit which will cover all the basics…

best sewing kits for projects

Yes, it may sound obvious, but a decent basic spool set of quality thread in different colours and/or weights is invaluable.

Sewing scissors come in many shapes and sizes for different tasks, but a good sewing kit should have at least one pair for cutting fabrics and snipping threads.

See more: the best sewing scissors .

A small, sharp seam ripper is the perfect tool for unpicking hems and other stitching to reverse any errors quickly with the minimum of effort.

There are oodles of different types of pins available, but a basic pin pack that pierces fabric well and holds it in place will be enough to get you started. Pins with large heads are easier to grab and remove.

A flexible, long measuring tape is way easier to use in most situations than a regular ruler, so a sewing craft kit should include one that is at least around 5 feet long.

A selection of quality hand sewing needles in different sizes and shapes will get you equipped for a wide range of sewing and craft projects.

Needles are sharp, prickly things, and if your fingers aren’t used to pushing them through fabric it can begin to hurt after a little while. A solid metal thimble will protect your pinkies and enable you to sew in comfort.

A good kit will almost certainly include a few handy buttons, and often other fasteners such as snap fasteners or hook and eyes as well.

Have you used any of these sewing project kits before?

How to Make a Travel Kit for English Paper Piecing

English Paper Piecing (EPP) Sewing KRAFT-TEX by Chardel Blaine

Kraft-Tex is a versatile heavy paper product that sews like fabric and acts like leather. It’s super sturdy, so is great for a project that will get a lot of use, like a travel kit for English paper piecing.

One of the joys of English Paper Piecing (EPP) is the technique’s portability. You can work on piecing a quilt almost anywhere – as long as you have your supplies nearby. And since you need just a few small items for English Paper Piecing Supplies , you don’t need a big, bulky tote bag. But to find just the right grab-and-go case for carrying my EPP projects when I’m on the move….

I wanted specific features in my travel case, but couldn’t find anything that had everything I wanted. So I designed this one! (The appliqué on the cover is optional, but it reminds me what I am likely to find inside.)

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. Read more about our affiliate linking policy .

Finished EPP Travel Case Angled

The travel case for English paper piecing has zipper pockets – 2 with vinyl windows and one removable bag that attaches to the center of the cover with Velcro. I can pull that one out to use separately. The back of each zipped window pocket is also the front of a slip pouch, both front and back, that is just the right size for a small cutting mat and a pattern or a notebook. The Velcro tab closure keeps it all together.

This is not a beginner project – there are many moving parts, and turning corners with zippers is not for the faint-hearted. Also Kraft-Tex is a non-woven material, so it doesn’t allow you to ease pieces to fit. Measure twice; cut once!

Here is a step-by-step guide to how I made my travel case for English paper piecing!

13 Beginner Sewing Project Kits to Help You on Your Sewing Journey

Good morning, afternoon, or evening, my fellow sewing nerds! I am super excited to dive into today’s topic because it’s important to discuss, especially for beginners. What are we talking about today? We’re going to discuss “all the things” surrounding beginner sewing project kits.

These kits can be SO helpful when you first start your sewing hobby. They usually consist of a beginner-friendly project and all the necessary materials to complete it. Let’s get into it and see just how special sewing kits can be for the sewing beginner.

Page Contents

What Should Be in a Basic Sewing Kit?

Some think of a sewing kit as a little basket with commonly used sewing tools and notions. That’s not what this post is about. This post focuses on pre-made sewing project kits with all the materials to create a specific item.

fabric scissors thread table paper beginner sewing project kits

However, a sewing project kit doesn’t usually include those essential items you need for general sewing. Here is a list of items you will need for all sorts of sewing projects.

  • Sewing machine
  • Measuring tape or ruler
  • Marking tool
  • Needles (if you need to sew by hand)
  • Thread
  • Pins (I recommend having a mixture of safety and straight pins)
  • Seam ripper

If you would prefer to purchase a kit that includes everything you need to start sewing, check out this post where I break down everything you should have and show you five excellent sewing kit options.

What Is the Best Beginner Sewing Project?

This is one of those questions: if you asked 100 different sewing enthusiasts, you would get 100 different answers. What would my answer be? Well, my advice is to choose a beginner-friendly sewing project that excites you.

If you are excited about a project, you will likely finish it and enjoy the process. If making a simple quilt doesn’t sound fun, don’t do it! If you have no desire to sew an apron or other kitchen-related items, skip them!

Sewing should be enjoyed, especially when you are learning how to sew. Here is a list of a few beginner sewing projects I recommend to those curious about sewing.

  • Zipper pouch
  • Pot holders
  • Simple quilt
  • A-line dress
  • Fabric basket
  • Stuffed animals
  • Dog bandana

The list could go on and on, but this should give you a good idea of the many different areas of sewing that offer beginner-friendly projects.

What Can I Sew in an Hour?

Most items I just listed in the previous section can be sewn in under an hour. Remember, when you start first, take your time and do not rush the sewing process. You want to get used to sewing straight lines and learn how to use a sewing machine.

Here are a few more items you could sew in an hour or less.

  • Fabric bookmark
  • Reusable makeup wipes
  • Soup bowl cozy
  • Microwavable heating pad
  • Sewing machine cover

Moscow's Urban Movement: Is There Hope for a Better Future?

sewing project travel kit

  • Written by Mari Chichagova
  • Published on December 09, 2015

In 2010, following the election of a new mayor, the Moscow city government began to work towards a comfortable urban environment in which citizens would feel like residents rather than mere users of the city. The emphasis was on creating public spaces in which Muscovites could fulfill their potential and feel that the city was their home.

Gorky Park was at the forefront of the changes. During the 1990s, the "Central Park of Culture and Leisure" accumulated a collection of fairground rides and became a sort of amusement park popular principally among visitors from other cities; Muscovites hardly went there. Three years ago, the city government made it their mission to overturn the park's image and bring Moscow's residents back. A full-scale reconstruction and restoration began in spring 2011.

Today, Gorky Park is a new level of urban space – one centered around people and boasting a scrupulously conceived infrastructure. All of the changes were aimed at creating a comfortable environment for life - for strolling and sport, work and study, culture and leisure. Moreover, in a short time the park has developed an effective economic model whereby it receives one half of its budget from the city and generates the other half itself.

sewing project travel kit

The regeneration of Gorky Park was followed by a flurry of changes. The city began to invest intensively in the development of other Moscow parks (by 2015, 240 new parks had been opened, 160 of which were in residential areas), in cycling mobility and infrastructure (by 2015, 241.7 kilometers of cycle track and around 10,000 bike parking spaces had been installed), and in street design and refurbishment (to date, 50 streets and squares have been repaired and 72 pedestrian zones created). Pedestrians are now the priority user group in the urban environment.

The work undertaken in 2015 has been more than impressive in its scale: sidewalks have been widened; 30,000 trees have been planted; 10,000 unauthorized advertising structures have been demolished; the facades of 943 buildings have been repaired, 178 hectares of lawn have been replanted, and 1.1 million square meters of flowerbed have been arranged and planted.

The redevelopment of Krymskaya embankment , completed in 2013, is one of the most successful projects to be implemented in recent years. In accordance with the design by Wowhaus Architecture Bureau , the embankment was completely pedestrianized. Cycle paths were demarcated and later became part of a single 8 kilometer cycle track along the Moskva River linking the Pushkinskaya, Andreevskaya, and Vorobyovskaya embankments. The historical identity of the area was also taken into account: artists have sold their work on the Krymskaya embankment since Soviet times; in light of the tradition, a covered wooden arcade was built to accommodate them. Nearby, a summer cinema and a lecture theater have sprung up. Meanwhile, plentiful benches were installed, along with an open fountain which has become a favorite spot for both locals and tourists.

Triumfalnaya square, which opened in its new guise in September 2015, is another successful urban project. As part of the reconstruction, vehicular access to the square was blocked, the street-level parking was removed, and the section of road from the Garden ring onto Tverskaya Street was closed off. The concept, by the architecture studio Buromoscow , was selected as part of a competition which attracted over forty entries. The design also included new trees, swings, and benches, as well as pavilions where residents and tourists might buy tea, coffee and a newspaper, or find out information about the city.

sewing project travel kit

Despite the obvious positive dynamic - Moscow's gradual transition from a city of disconnected “islands” with a closed, unfriendly urban environment to a European style city where pedestrians are the priority user group - there remain a plethora of issues.

Yes, Moscow is continually holding round tables, forums, and discussions of its future urban development. Yes, it can now be said that the government has long-term planning objectives and a concept for how the city ought to look in three, five or ten years’ time.

sewing project travel kit

And yet - despite the involvement of world class experts such as Jan Gehl , Renzo Piano , and Diller Sconfidio + Renfro , despite the numerous architectural competitions involving a jury, the expert community, and the citizens themselves - the quality and implementation of this city-scale project leaves much to be desired.

A good illustration of this is the Moscow government's ongoing program "My Street," which is intended to improve Moscow's public spaces. The project sets aside 100 billion roubles for the redevelopment of 4,000 streets by 2018. Nevertheless, the quality of the work carried out over the summer of 2015 (scheduled for completion in time for the Moscow City Day celebrations in early September) was far from ideal. After the hurried redevelopment works, it was hard not to notice the high, unwieldy curbs, the drains appearing unexpectedly in the middle of cycle-tracks, the tarmac laid on top of paving slabs, or the paving slabs laid on top of tarmac.

sewing project travel kit

Often, an important date (such as the 2018 FIFA World Cup or City Day) is the best motivation for civil servants to get things done. But should it be that way?

There is a flip-side to chasing after statistics. Firstly, quality of execution suffers. Secondly, the choice of contractor and the professionalism of the people hired to supervise and implement the work leaves much to be desired.

The absence of professionals with the skills, experience and enthusiasm to finish a project to a high standard is becoming increasingly apparent. The contractors' main concern is currently to finish the work as fast as possible (usually to a low standard) and pick up their pay check. Companies rarely invest in skilled personnel, preferring to hire cheap labor.

sewing project travel kit

The winners of architectural contests should be permitted, at a legislative level, to supervise the realization of their spatial development concepts. If this is not done, then contracting organizations will continue to profiteer and to alter concepts at the master-planning stage, condemning the original designs to remain mere ideas, a collection of pretty architectural renders in the official documentation. If third parties continue to oversee work, as opposed to the authors of the concepts, then the question must be answered: how will the quality of future projects be guaranteed?

There is no doubt about the mayor's desire to invest in the visual face of Moscow and to improve the city's quality of life. Yet the need remains for a more careful approach to project implementation and to hiring and contracting decisions. There also needs to be more active work with citizens - they are the main users of urban space, and they, ultimately, are the clients.

Mari Chichagova graduated with honours degree from the Faculty of Philology of Lomonosov Moscow State University in 2009. In 2010 she started working at "Interior + Design," a magazine dedicated to architecture, design, culture and about people who were defining and driving those processes, from Norman Foster to Le Corbusier and Zaha Hadid. Afterwards she worked as a PR specialist at the Strelka Institute of Media, Architecture and Design , a Russian institution that is working in the field of urban studies, using a multi-disciplinary approach.

Since 2013 she has worked as a Deputy PR Director and then as an Acting PR Director at Gorky Park , Moscow ’s Central park. In addition to PR duties, she initiated contacts with other significant parks and organizations around the globe such as International Federation of Parks and Recreation Administration, the San Francisco Golden Gate Park, San Francisco Recreation and Park Department, Central Park of New York among others.

Pullman-Moscow Regional Airport Plans Major Expansion

“The Moscow and Pullman area is very resilient,” Kevin Mulcaster, consultant with Mead and Hunt for the Pullman-Moscow Regional Airport said.

At an open house exhibit on Thursday night at the Best Western University Plus Inn in Moscow, the Pullman-Moscow Regional Airport (PMRA) showcased plans to open a new airport terminal by the winter of 2023.

The new terminal will feature a multi-level building, more parking, a welcome center representative of the Palouse, allow for more expansion in the future, improve employment, encourage education and tourism and allow for the possible addition of more airlines to service the area. It will also mitigate the undersized security in the existing terminal and will have enough space to accommodate a larger passenger demand.

The whole project is estimated to total 49.2 million dollars. The PMRA has received 42 million dollars in federal funding from the CARES Act funding and the FAA AIP Program for the completion of the new terminal.

sewing project travel kit

With the recent completion of the runway realignment program in 2019, the airport has decided that Pullman, Moscow and the surrounding areas on the Palouse have outgrown the existing PMRA terminal, which was built in 1990, due to exponential passenger growth. In 2009, they enplaned 30,128 passengers and in 2019 they enplaned 70,061 passengers.

With plans for construction to start on the new terminal this year and be completed by the end of 2023, the project will extend over two years.

Damon Smith, also a consultant with Mead and Hunt, explained that this project has been long in the making.

“We started talking about the need 10 years ago,” Smith said.

Smith said that the new terminal will serve not only Moscow, Pullman and the surrounding areas, but will be supported by local and out-of-town business people and majorly facilitate the travel of Washington State University and the University of Idaho athletic teams.

sewing project travel kit

Due to COVID-19, the PMRA went from its normal four to five round trips to Seattle per day to three. Although their travel rates dipped, they expect their regular travel to be back to normal by 2023 when the new terminal opens.

Mulcaster explained that when they started to plan the new terminal in the midst of COVID-19, they looked at the attacks on Sept. 9, 2001 and the great recession in 2008 in relation to the Palouse and surrounding communities. He said that Moscow and Pullman recovered much faster than the rest of the nation after those events. Because of the community’s history of bouncing back after these two historical events, Mulcaster said they are confident that the community will do the same again after COVID-19, leading to future growth for the airport.

In addition, a statement on the PMRA website explained that all indicators point to growth for the airport.

“This growth is attributed to the continued economic growth of the region, the improved all-weather reliability of the Airport resulting from the runway realignment program, the anticipated addition of twice daily non-stop jet service to Denver, and potential for additional destinations being added to other Northwest cities,” the statement said.
