Safari keeps reloading/refreshing pages – driving me nuts

Safari keeps reloading/refreshing pages on my iMac – driving me nuts.

Why or why does Safari do this, if I go 'back' a page, it refreshes it, delaying my browsing experience. No other browser on the planet does this, but I find I'm using Chrome (which isn't as nice to use) way more now as Sarari's auto-refresh is driving me insane and I'm sick of it.

Is there a cure for this before I ditch Safari permanently?

Safari/Preferences/Advanced - enable the Develop menu, then go there and Empty Caches. Quit/reopen Safari and test. If no luck, go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db and move it to the trash.

Didn't work.

For example, if I'm in eBay and I click on something, then click the back page, that previous page refreshes and reloads all over again, no matter how many times I go forward/backward between the same two pages, it refreshes and reloads both times. Totally crap.

How-To Geek

How to fix "this webpage was reloaded because a problem occurred" on a mac.

Safari is responsive and energy efficient, but it also comes with its own set of error messages which can be hard to diagnose.

Quick Links

What causes this error, possible fixes for "this webpage was reloaded...", always keep another browser handy.

Safari is a solid browser choice for Mac users because it's optimized to run well on Apple hardware and sip as little power as possible. That doesn't mean it's perfect, however, and web pages will crash from time to time.

So, what can you do about a problem web page?

This error can be caused by a number of issues, and it's hard to diagnose the exact cause. The most common causes are web pages that use significant resources, pages that consume a lot of physical memory, or incompatibilities with the current version of Safari you are running.

Often these errors occur sporadically, never to return again. The problem is worse when a particular website constantly causes the error to appear, which can result in Safari refusing to render it at all and showing an "a problem repeatedly occurred" error.

If the website in question is particularly demanding, users of older machines with limited resources may be more likely to encounter it. Due to the way Safari monitors how websites use your resources, it's not unusual to see the error even on new machines either.

You can always check your memory or CPU usage using Activity Monitor (search Spotlight or find it under Applications > Utilities) on the CPU and Memory tabs. Safari splits websites into separate processes, so if resources are to blame you should be able to tell here.

Related: How to See Which Program Is Using All Your CPU on Mac

The first thing you should check is that Safari is updated to the latest version under System Preferences > Software Update. Simply having the latest update for your version of macOS may not be enough, and you might need to upgrade your Mac to the latest version of macOS  to get the latest version of Safari.

Once you've determined your browser is up to date, consider what elements on the page may be causing the error. For example, if the website has a lot of rotating advertisements, JavaScript could be to blame. You might also have a cached version of the website causing problems.

These sorts of problems can be diagnosed using settings only available in Safari's Develop menu. To enable the menu, click on "Safari" in the top-left corner of the screen then choose Preferences followed by the Advanced tab. Enable "Show Develop menu in menu bar" and return to the webpage in question.

You can now use the Develop > Empty Caches menu bar option to delete any saved data causing an issue and try again. If JavaScript is to blame, you can disable it under Develop > Disable JavaScript.

Be aware that changing settings in the Develop menu may cause websites not to work properly. We recommend changing any settings back to default values when you're done using the problem website.

You can also try disabling any Safari plugins you have running or removing Safari extensions, too. As a last resort, enable "Block All Cookies" under Safari > Preferences > Privacy (but make sure you enable this setting again when finished so that other webpages function correctly).

It's not unusual to find out nothing you do will help, and that a certain website or web app is not compatible with Safari. The easiest fix in this instance is to simply use another browser like Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox .

It's always a good idea to have another browser (or two) installed so that you have something to fall back on if you encounter problems with Safari. Broadly speaking though, Mac users should stick to Safari for its unbeatable speed and power efficiency.

In this article, we will explore the possible reasons why Safari keeps reloading on your iPad and provide you with practical solutions to resolve the issue.

Table of Contents

Understanding The Issue: Safari Reloading On IPad

When using Safari on your iPad, you may have noticed that the browser frequently reloads pages seemingly out of nowhere. This can be quite frustrating, especially when you’re in the middle of reading an article or filling out a form. Understanding the issue is the first step toward finding a solution.

One possible explanation for this behavior is that Safari is running low on memory. When your iPad doesn’t have enough available memory to handle all the open apps and Safari tabs, it may choose to reload pages to free up resources. Another reason could be that Safari’s settings are configured to limit the number of open tabs, causing it to automatically reload older pages.

Moreover, network connectivity issues can also contribute to Safari reloading. If your internet connection is weak or unstable, Safari may reload pages to ensure that you have the latest version.

In this article, we will delve into the common causes behind Safari reloading on iPad and explore various troubleshooting tips and fixes to help you resolve this issue and enjoy a more seamless browsing experience.

1. Understanding the Issue: Safari Reloading on iPad

Common Causes Of Safari Reloading On IPad

Safari reloading on iPad is a frustrating issue that can interrupt your browsing experience. Understanding the common causes behind this problem can help you troubleshoot and fix it more effectively. One major cause is an excessive number of open tabs. Safari tries to optimize performance by reloading inactive tabs, which can lead to reloading when switching between tabs. Another reason could be a low memory condition on your device, forcing Safari to reload frequently to free up resources. Additionally, outdated versions of iOS and Safari, or incompatible extensions and plugins, can also trigger the reloading issue. Knowing these common causes will enable you to identify the specific triggers and implement the appropriate fixes. By addressing these underlying issues, you can minimize or eliminate the frequent reloading problem, allowing for a smoother browsing experience on your iPad.

Clearing Cache And Data To Resolve Safari Reloading

If you are experiencing the frustrating issue of Safari constantly reloading on your iPad, one effective troubleshooting step you can take is clearing the cache and data of the Safari app. The cache and data stored by Safari can sometimes become corrupt or overloaded, causing the app to reload frequently.

To clear the cache and data on your iPad, start by opening the Settings app and scrolling down to find Safari. Tap on Safari, and then look for the option labeled “Clear History and Website Data.” Tap on this option and confirm your decision when prompted.

By clearing the cache and data, you are essentially deleting any stored browsing history, cookies, and website data. This can help eliminate any conflicts or issues that may be causing Safari to reload excessively.

Once you have cleared the cache and data, relaunch Safari and see if the reloading issue persists. In many cases, this simple step can resolve the problem and allow you to browse the web without constant interruptions.

Disabling Safari Background App Refresh

One possible solution to the issue of Safari constantly reloading on your iPad is to disable the background app refresh feature specifically for Safari. This feature allows Safari to refresh web content in the background, but in some cases, it may result in continuous reloading. To disable this feature, go to the Settings app on your iPad and scroll down until you find the “Safari” option. Tap on it, and then locate the “Background App Refresh” option. Toggle the switch next to Safari to disable it.

Disabling background app refresh for Safari can help conserve system resources and prevent unwanted reloading of web pages. By doing so, Safari will only refresh content when you actively visit a webpage or interact with it, rather than refreshing in the background when not in use. This should alleviate the issue of Safari reloading on your iPad, providing a smoother browsing experience. If the problem persists, however, there are additional troubleshooting steps to explore.

Updating IOS And Safari To Fix Reloading Issues

Updating iOS and Safari to the latest versions can often resolve the reloading issues you may be experiencing on your iPad. Both the operating system and the browser receive regular updates that not only introduce new features but also address known bugs and compatibility issues.

To update your iOS, go to the Settings app on your iPad and tap on “General.” From there, select “Software Update” and follow the prompts to download and install the latest version of iOS.

Updating Safari is slightly different. Open the App Store and tap on your profile picture in the top-right corner of the screen. Scroll down until you find Safari, then tap on the “Update” button next to it. If an update is available, the app will be updated to the latest version.

Keeping both iOS and Safari up to date ensures that you have the most recent fixes and improvements for the browser, potentially resolving any reloading issues you encounter. It’s recommended to regularly check for updates and install them promptly to maintain optimal performance.

Investigating Unstable Extensions And Plugins

Unstable extensions and plugins can often be the culprit behind Safari constantly reloading on your iPad. These additional features, while they may enhance your browsing experience, can sometimes conflict with Safari’s functionality and cause it to malfunction.

To investigate this issue, start by disabling all extensions and plugins one by one and then checking if the reloading issue persists. You can do this by going to Safari settings, tapping on “Extensions” or “Plugins,” and turning off each one individually.

After disabling an extension or plugin, relaunch Safari and browse various websites to see if the reloading problem occurs. By systematically eliminating these additional features, you’ll be able to identify the specific extension or plugin responsible for the issue. Once you pinpoint the problematic extension or plugin, uninstall or update it to its latest version.

If you rely heavily on a particular extension or plugin and disabling it isn’t a viable option, check for any available updates. Developers often release updates to fix compatibility issues and bugs, which may resolve the reloading problem. Remember to always keep your extensions and plugins up to date to ensure they work smoothly with Safari.

Seeking Further Assistance For Persistent Safari Reloading

If you have exhausted all troubleshooting tips and fixes mentioned above and your Safari on iPad still keeps reloading, it might be time to seek further assistance. While most reloading issues can be resolved using the methods discussed earlier, there could be underlying technical problems that require professional intervention.

One option is to visit an Apple Store or authorized service center. Apple experts can diagnose the issue and provide a solution tailored to your specific situation. They may perform in-depth diagnostics or suggest resetting your device, reinstalling iOS, or other advanced solutions.

Another avenue to explore is reaching out to the official Apple Support channels. You can contact Apple Support via phone, online chat, or email to get personalized assistance from their dedicated team of experts. They are equipped to handle complex issues and can guide you through the troubleshooting process.

Remember to provide as much detail as possible when seeking assistance. Describe the problem, mention the steps you have already taken, and provide information about your device and software versions. This will help the experts narrow down the issue and provide an accurate solution.

In conclusion, while persistent Safari reloading on iPad can be quite frustrating, there are several troubleshooting tips and fixes you can try. If these do not resolve the issue, seeking further assistance from Apple or their authorized service providers is the best course of action.

1. Why does Safari keep reloading on iPad?

If Safari continues to reload despite troubleshooting efforts, you can try resetting the Safari settings on your iPad. This can be done by going to the Settings app, selecting Safari, and tapping on the “Reset Safari” option. Keep in mind that this action will remove your browsing history, cookies, and other saved data.

4. Are there any other potential fixes for Safari’s reloading issue on iPad?

Yes, apart from the aforementioned troubleshooting tips, you can also try using a different browser as an alternative to Safari. There are various third-party browsers available on the App Store that might provide a smoother browsing experience. Additionally, contacting Apple Support or visiting an Apple Store can help you further diagnose and resolve the reloading problem.

Final Thoughts

In conclusion, Safari may keep reloading on iPads due to a variety of factors such as low memory, outdated browser, or a glitch in the software. iOS 15: How to Quickly Refresh a Webpage in Safari

In iOS 15, Apple has completely redesigned Safari with easier-to-reach controls in mind when you're browsing the internet. For example, the URL address bar can optionally sit at the bottom of the screen instead of up top, which makes it easier to access when you're using your iPhone with one hand.

iPad Pages (Safari and Apps, Keep Reloading)

The iPad’s wide display makes it ideal for surfing the web and streaming music and videos. The downside is when there are issues causing web pages and applications to reload, ruining the entire experience. If you constantly bump into these problems and want a lasting solution, you will find all the answers in this write-up.

So, why do iPad pages keep reloading? iPad pages and applications primarily keep reloading due to limited RAM, use of an outdated device, or in-app issues. The iPad’s RAM cannot handle heavy tasks, and the system will often reload when trying to ease up more space. Your tablet will also run into errors if it is outdated, but you can solve this by frequently updating the software. Alternatively, you can restart or reset your iPad.

Every iPad user wants seamless browsing and app multitasking, but this is impossible if the pages or apps keep refreshing. If you are working or studying and need the internet to complete projects, you would want Chrome or Safari to load pages faster and allow you to switch between tabs effortlessly. However, some users report issues with their iPads constantly reloading pages and causing delays. If this also affects you, the following are the likely causes and remedies.

iPad pages keep reloading due to limited RAM in the device. Pages take up space , and the system must reload while trying to release the room for other tasks. It is also likely that your iPad or browser is outdated, and only a software update will restore regular running. Lastly, it may be an issue with the page having redirecting loops. You can troubleshoot these problems by restarting or resetting your iPad or making a factory reset as a last resort.

Constant page reloading is frequent for iPad users, and it means long waiting times to access pages you urgently need, leading to stress and pressure trying to beat deadlines. Most of these problems are due to the iPad’s construction or the nature of the page, but luckily, there are some troubleshooting methods to get your device running effortlessly again.

Sometimes, the website may keep reloading since it has issues causing redirecting loops. The page may be broken or show an incorrect location, causing the browser to redirect. You can close the tab and open a new one to see whether the refreshing will stop.

Secondly, the loading page may be packed with ads taking up a lot of memory , especially if you have opened several. Some users opt for adblockers to minimize the content amount in pages to speed up browsing.

Another probable reason is that your iPad is an outdated version. Some models are now obsolete and don’t receive any updates from Apple, making it challenging to solve common errors and bugs within systems. If you use Safari, you will likely have this problem because it is an in-built application. You can switch your browser to Chrome or any other to deal with such issues.

On the contrary, if you have a newer iPad model that accepts updates , a practical option involves updating the iPadOS and Safari. Upgrading your device and the browser will eliminate any present errors causing the problem.

The system will scan the links and check for redirect loops, and Safari will detect any anomalies with the page and notify you whether the website has complications. The most logical explanation for the frequent reloading is the limited RAM in the iPad.

When browsing, the device must always store the pages in its memory and will keep erasing background tabs trying to release space for the current tab. Incidentally, your last page will refresh when you go back to open it.

It often happens when you visit a heavy website that occupies massive RAM in the iPad. The page will cause other tabs to hibernate to leave more RAM for the browser in use, and you will notice that the website operates slower than usual.

RAM issues are more frequent with the iPad than with the iPhone because the tablet has a larger screen , hence needs more storage space for an opened page. If you constantly have the same problem, the chances are high that you are running out of memory. Chrome is usually more demanding on the RAM, and users prefer Safari because it is specially designed for the iPad’s browsing needs.

Still, it is advisable to reduce the number of tabs you open at a go and close unnecessary running apps in the background. The best way is to free up RAM to make room for pages to load. You can long-press the Power button until the option to switch off comes up. Next, release the key and hold Home until the screen disappears, and you will have successfully cleared RAM.

Before doing this, it is imperative to save your data ; otherwise, you may lose them. You can also restart the iPad by long-pressing the Power for seconds, sliding to switch off, and then turning it back on. If none of these methods work, the last resort would be to make a factory reset. However, it is the least-preferred troubleshooting because you will lose all your data and have to start everything again.

Safari Keeps Reloading Pages iPad

There are several browsers to choose from for your iPad, but Safari is preferred because it comes pre-installed by Apple. Safari is not immune to errors like delays by constantly reloading pages like any other version. If it is your go-to browser and you want it to work seamlessly, you must be looking for remedies to such problems.

Safari may keep reloading pages on your iPad due to adequate RAM. When you reopen the tab, the system will have forgotten it and try to re-establish the connection by loading the pages afresh. Safari has a memory management feature that disables dormant web pages to create more room for new tabs . Secondly, when you are using an unstable Wi-Fi, your browser will likely reload several times, and the same thing happens when you have an old iPad running outdated software.

There are several logical explanations behind reloading issues on Safari. It is likely due to the browser requiring more room than what is available on the RAM, or your tab is auto-disabled while idle to create more space for a RAM-intensive website.

When you click back, the page will have to reload . Therefore, the issue with the RAM happens when you are loading a page but you have insufficient space on your iPad’s memory or the browser erased previous tabs.

Additionally, some sites are pretty heavy with multiple pages, weighing Safari down and forcing it to load for longer than expected. Alternatively, the page may have issues if the problem goes away when you open a new website. However, if it persists across all sites, your browser may be to blame. If you are running an old iPadOS version, you can quickly solve this issue by updating your system.

If your device has enough RAM and your Safari is updated to the latest version , you will not have these hurdles. If you don’t have RAM or update issues, the other reason for this may be internet connectivity.

When your cellular data or Wi-Fi are weak, the web pages will reload as the system tries to reconnect. These are the most likely explanations for issues with Safari frequently reloading. Luckily, they are straightforward to solve.

Safari has auto-refresh capabilities and turning it on effectively deals with bugs causing reloading and redirecting. Go to Settings, click General and open the Background App Refresh before sliding the Off button. Secondly, you can clear unnecessary data in the app to ease the RAM, which stops the constant refreshing.

To create more space on the RAM, tap Settings and Safari, and navigate to Clear History and Website Data. Click on the tab to erase all the history and cache, then restart the iPad. When you launch the browser, you will notice that the system will restore your seamless surfing. If the troubleshooting fails, you can reduce the number of pages you open at a go to make it easy on the system.

Newer upgrades come with better features and would also effectively solve such common issues as long as your iPad still has Apple support. It would be wise to regularly update your device and the browser to ensure that they run efficiently. However, note that older tablets may be challenging to update, but you can use another browser besides Safari or upgrade to a new iPad if you can buy one.

Sometimes a simple reboot may be enough to have you back online. Hold down the Home and Power buttons on your iPad simultaneously until the screen turns dark. Keep pressing as you wait for the Apple logo, release the buttons and let the system restart. Besides a reboot, you can also resort to factory resetting, but it should be the last option.

Why Do My Apps Keep Reloading on iPad?

An impressive feature of phones and iPads is how they allow users to multitask, making switching between your favorite apps easier within seconds. However, some people complain that the apps sometimes keep reloading, meaning that you don’t resume where you left off. Luckily, there are reliable solutions if you want your apps to stop reloading.

Your apps on your iPad tend to frequently refresh and reload due to RAM issues, problems with the application’s design, or iOS errors. If the device’s cache runs out, you can expect the app to keep reloading when in the background as you open other tabs.

The operating system also limits background performances to reduce battery consumption and enhance the running apps’ performance. Lastly, the app may keep reloading if its design is faulty or requires massive storage to run.

Picture a scenario where you navigate through Netflix and need to search for something online, but your app refreshes when you go back to it. You will always be cautious when leaving a page because you will likely not pick up from where you left off, and you may have to restart everything. The iPad’s limited RAM is mostly to blame for these issues, but it may also be a problem with an outdated system or a flaw in the application’s design.

Resources in an iPadOS are pretty limited, and it is expected for background applications to run differently than the ones in use. Moreover, it is natural for the system to restrict the app’s performance to help improve the device’s battery life and enhance the user experience in the running app.

Besides, some gadgets do not fully support multitasking , regardless of the operating system, preventing apps from entering suspended states only to terminate them when they enter the background.

Reloading when you go back to another page also depends on the app’s design. Some automatically reload whenever you open them to offer fresh content, while other versions seamlessly maintain their states.

You may fail to notice a difference because some developers ensure that the transition is more subtle. Apple is keen on urging developers to do everything possible to maintain the app’s state.

In most cases, programs using HTML-rendered data have such issues because the structure is more demanding on the memory, causing the apps to reload frequently. iPads also have limited RAM, especially versions like iPad Mini 4 with only 2GB. Luckily, newer models like the Pros have more space, up to 4GB, leaving room for more background apps.

Another overlooked reason behind app reloading is the background refresh setting on the iPad. This feature prepares apps before use, but many complain about how much it drains the battery and depletes data.

You will have to deal with constant app reloading when switching between tabs if you mistakenly enable it. You can go to the Settings, scroll down to find General, and select Background App Refresh. If you have enabled it, you can turn it off, and the automatic reloading will stop.

If you rely on your iPad for work or school, nothing will ruin the experience, like unnecessary reloading. It means restarting whatever you were doing and losing your progress when dealing with long pages.

The limited RAM is usually to blame because the system keeps struggling to accommodate new pages while retaining the previously opened ones. You can erase the RAM to ease the space or restart or reset the iPad.

The refreshing may also happen if you have an outdated device or browser, for which you can make updates. If persistent, maybe the site you are scrolling through has a problem, but you can open a new one to confirm. If all these methods fail, the last resort would be to do a factory reset on your tablet.

How To Stop Safari From Reloading Pages on Your iPad? 1

Troubleshooting Safari Page Reloads

It is possible that cached files are causing your webpage to reload on Safari. Cached files are stored in your browser and can cause errors if they become corrupted or outdated. To eliminate this as a possibility, try clearing the website data from your Safari browser. To do this, go to the Safari menu, select ‘Preferences', and then click on the ‘ Privacy ' tab. Then select ‘Manage Website Data' and click ‘Remove All'. This should clear any cached files that may be causing your page to reload.

Safari Reloading Issues on iPad

Safari on the iPad can reload for a variety of reasons, however, most commonly it is due to a lack of memory. When the iPad runs out of memory, it will close and reload pages as needed in order to free up resources. To help prevent this from happening, you should close any open applications by double pressing the home button and swiping up and away all open applications. Additionally, if you find that Safari is consistently reloading on your iPad, you may need to free up some space on your device or upgrade your device to a newer model with more RAM.

Stopping Safari From Reloading Pages

In order to stop Safari from reloading pages, you will need to take the following steps: 1. Open Safari and click on the ‘Safari' tab in the menu bar. 2. Select ‘Preferences' from the drop-down menu. 3. Click on the ‘Advanced' tab and check the box labeled ‘Show Develop menu in the menu bar.' 4. Click on ‘Develop' in the menu bar and select ‘Empty Caches.' 5. Close Safari and reopen it to ensure that your changes have taken effect.

This should stop Safari from reloading pages each time you open a new web page or refresh an existing one. If this does not work, you may want to try clearing your browser's cache and history, as this can sometimes cause unwanted reloads too.

Stopping Safari from Reloading Pages on iPad

To stop Safari from reloading pages on an iPad, it's best to limit the number of open windows and tabs at any given time. Safari uses RAM to store pages in its cache, so having too many windows and tabs open can cause the RAM to become full. When this happens, Safari will only store a preview of the page, then reload it when you attempt to access it again. To prevent this from happening, close any windows or tabs that are no longer needed and try to limit the number of concurrent open windows to three or four. This should help reduce the occurrence of auto-refreshing pages in Safari.

Troubleshooting Constant Reloading on an iPad

To fix your iPad constantly reloading, you'll want to start by checking that your internet connection is working properly. If your internet connection is good, then the next step would be to clear the history and website data from Safari. To do this, open your iPad's Settings app and go to Safari. Scroll down and tap on Clear History & Website Data, then restart your iPad and try using Safari again. If the issue persists, then you can try resetting all settings on your iPad. To do this, open Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings. This will reset all of your settings without deleting any of your content or data. After that, restart your iPad and test out Safari again.

In conclusion, when Safari reloads it is usually due to low system resources or cached files. To eliminate the possibility of cached files, clear website data in Safari. To help prevent Safari from needing to reload due to system resources, you should consider upgrading your computer or switching to a more resource-efficient browser. Additionally, you can disable the “Allow META REFRESH” option in the Internet Properties window and make sure to close any open applications on your iPad by double pressing the home button and swiping up and away all open applications. With these steps, you should be able to get Safari running smoothly again.

Sometimes I will be using Safari, particularly on Facebook, and Safari will randomly start refreshing the pages repeatedly over and over again without me doing anything. Anyone else have this problem? Any way to keep it from happening again? The only way I can get it to stop is by quitting Safari completely which is pretty annoying.

It happens to me on Firefox once in a while. I don't know why. I have Little Snitch enabled and I monitor everything that goes in and out and plus I even scanned for viruses but nothing. Could be a browser problem.

bigjobby said: I wasn't asking you to! I asked what other browsers have you tried? There is a difference! So don't start having a dig! Having another browser doesn't mean you have to use it. But if you have a problem with your chosen browser then you can use the alternative. If the problem still exists in the alternate browser then you can more or less say it is not a browser issue. If the problem only occurs in Facebook, then the problem is more likely to be Facebook and not Safari. If you haven't tried any other browsers and have no willingness to, then how can you say Safari is the 'best' one. Lastly, have you ever wondered how Facebook auto-updates your 'Home' page?
