Daily briefings given by the Cruise Director and talks from Guest Speakers and expedition staff take place in The Lounge which is fitted with the highest standard of presentation equipment including multiple screens. In addition to the Lounge, there is also The Club, located on the Mawson Deck which features the main bar where the onboard pianist plays periodically throughout the day. The Club also offers a 24-hour tea and coffee station. Towards the aft of the ship on the Mawson Deck is The Library which is well stocked with reference books pertaining to the destinations the vessel is visiting and a selection of essential reads. A collection of games and devices to access the internet via the ship’s satellite can also be found in the library. Access to the ship’s satellite Wi-Fi via your own device is complimentary on board (signal strength varies depending on location and demand).

The Dining Room which can seat all guests at one sitting is located on the Amundsen Deck and is a bright and charming setting to enjoy the delicious meals on board. Outside there is a rear Lido Deck located on the Scott Deck where meals are served in warm weather under shade. Whilst heaters and blankets make dining al fresco comfortable in cooler climates. Further to this, on the top Shackleton Deck there is an observation area which offers a fantastic platform for spotting wildlife complete with deck furniture, ideal for relaxing with a book or catching up with fellow travellers. You will also find a clinic and Doctor on board and a lift that serves all decks. Additionally there is a small hairdressers with appointments made on request.

Your Dining

It is quite a task to create a dining experience as that found on board our Sky vessels when you are cruising in far-flung corners of the globe, indeed it takes a team of highly talented chefs to deliver fresh, varied dishes no matter where you are at sea. Fortunately, our catering teams are well adapted to the world of small ship cruising where no two days are the same and the menus are often scheduled and tailored around the days’ excursions. With only one sitting and a maximum of just over 100 passengers, the cuisine on board is of a consistent superior quality that befits such vessels. Where possible and when it meets their high standards, our accomplished chefs will obtain local produce in markets. Such purchases enhance the well-stocked larders and enable the chefs on board to exhibit their culinary skills and bring a local touch to the varied menus, emphasising the international expertise of the chefs on board. Afternoon tea and pre-dinner canapés take place every day in either the comfort of the Lounge or out on the Lido Deck when the weather is favourable. Tea and coffee are also available 24 hours a day. Special diets can be catered for with sufficient notice.

In keeping with the informal atmosphere on board, when dining you are able to choose your seating arrangements at your leisure. Whether that be joining a table of four to six other passengers outside on the Lido Deck in the evening’s sunshine or whether you prefer to enjoy meals in the à la carte restaurant. For those travelling alone, our onboard friendly restaurant staff will take care to ensure you are seated with other like-minded travellers. In the main elegant dining room, breakfast is served buffet-style, with certain items cooked to order on request. Lunch and dinner are à la carte with an excellent choice of dishes, with the menu reflecting the daily catch or local delicacies. To enhance your dining experience even further a selection of wines are included with both meals and there is also a comprehensive wine list with a wide selection of new and old world wines from which to choose.

The onboard catering and restaurant staff are experienced at sea and enthuse a passion for superb service. Whether it be ensuring you have an outdoor blanket as you enjoy the crisp sea breeze on the Lido Deck or sharing their knowledge of the characteristics of the days’ wine selections, you will experience a service on board like no other. You may also enjoy sumptuous barbeques on deck whilst at times, the chef will make your dish to order at special pasta or stir fry stations.

For Your Comfort

The MS Hebridean Sky is equipped with the latest safety, navigation and communications equipment along with roll stabilizers to minimize the ship’s motion. During your voyage we hope to offer the opportunity to visit the Captain and Officers on the Bridge to check the vessels progress by charts and learn more about your journey. There is also a dedicated channel on your television in your suite showing the routing of the vessel along with technical information and estimated times of arrival and departure from port. On board you will also find a clinic and Doctor and a lift that serves all decks. Smoking on board is restricted to a specific area on deck.

Life Onboard

If large resort-style vessels accommodating many thousands of passengers are your ideal, then our ships are not for you as you will not find endless entertainment, round the clock buffets and the people management which is so much a part of today’s big ship on board style. However, if like us you prefer a more peaceful life at sea you will find our flagships the perfect vessels.

When choosing your next voyage the choice of vessels is astounding. You can select a ship carrying in excess of 4000 passengers with impersonal service or join us aboard the MS Island Sky or MS Hebridean Sky where peace, high quality service and attention to detail are the order of the day. We promise there will be no organised entertainment, fancy dress, deck games or any of the usual big ship experiences. Instead, the atmosphere is warm and convivial and more akin to a private yacht or country hotel in which you can learn more about the wonders of nature, culture and ancient civilisations in the company of like-minded people. A little music in the lounge or bar after dinner, Guest Speakers and informative port briefings from our Expedition Leader or Cruise Director and of course good food with wine included at lunch and dinner, all contribute to make any voyage aboard these wonderful vessels a memorable and joyful experience. After a day ashore you will return to the comfort and peace of an exceedingly comfortable ship.

The daily programme on board is in the capable hands of our Cruise Director or Expedition Leader and staff who coordinate with the Captain and Officers to make the most of each day. Briefings and talks will be provided throughout the voyage together with a ‘Daily Programme’ that is distributed every evening to your suite outlining the next day’s activities. Dress on board is casual and relaxed and there will be no ‘black tie’ evenings.

COMMUNICATIONS

If you wish to contact the ship, please call +1 954 672 6930. This is a US number so calls will be charged at an international rate. There is a phone in your cabin which has access to an outside line. Outgoing call costs will be advised on board. You can make cabin to cabin calls free of charge. The ship can be contacted by email at [email protected]. Please indicate the passenger name and cabin number in the subject field.

Satellite Internet & Wi-Fi

Connectivity is now an important feature in our lives and we do our best to bring this service to you on board. There are facilities in the Library to access the internet and Noble Caledonia also offers complimentary satellite Wi-Fi access on board. Wi-Fi is available in the public areas and passenger cabins. You will need to bring your own device to connect in these areas. Wi-Fi cards, with your unique log in and instructions, are available at Reception. The service provided on board uses direct satellite technology and has a certain amount of bandwidth available. The same level of connectivity and speed that we enjoy at home through cable or fibre-optic based infrastructures cannot be expected on board.

As you traverse the seas and ports, the ship’s antennae have to re-establish connection with the transmission satellites. Signal may also be blocked by mountains, buildings or even local radio frequency regulations. Remote locations out of satellite range, weather on earth or in space can also affect signal strength. Please also bear in mind that the network is shared by everyone on board so congestion can be anticipated which will slow down speeds especially at peak times. The bandwidth available to the ship means that connectivity is best served using text-based communications and simple social media. Some applications which involve downloading large files may not be available on board.

Here are some tips for using satellite Wi-Fi on board:

• Avoid peak times such as the return to the ship after an excursion.

• Always log off the system when not in use to free up bandwidth space for other passengers.

• Work offline.

• Download any apps you need before leaving home.

• Turn off or disable background app data services and updates – apps that sync in the background can quickly eat up data without your knowledge.

• Disable push notifications as these use a lot of data.

• Remember to bring any charging or data cables required.

• Your Network provider may offer a cruise package but be careful, once the land signal is lost, this will transfer to the satellite signal which will incur greater costs.

• Cruise Terminals ashore often have good land based internet to supplement your connectivity.

• Put your phone on Airplane Mode when not in use to avoid roaming charges from your Network Provider.

• Be careful not to access private accounts such as bank accounts on public Wi-Fi systems.

DAILY PROGRAMME

A Daily Programme, detailing the following day’s arrangements as well as any specific information about the day’s activities is produced on board and delivered to your cabin daily.

DIETARY REQUIREMENTS

If you have any dietary requirements such as vegetarian, low salt, gluten free and low cholesterol, please notify the Reservations Department. We regret that not all dietary requirements can be guaranteed. If you have any specific or special foods that you require we recommend that you take some with you although we will endeavour to accommodate your needs. Once on board, please speak to the Chef or the Maitre D’ at dinner on your first night on board to reconfirm your needs.

DINING & DRINKING

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served in the Restaurant. MS Hebridean Sky operates an open seating policy which greatly enhances the convivial atmosphere on board. The Restaurant has table configurations of 8, 6, 4 and some 2’s. As we operate an open seating policy, we regret that reservations cannot be made. House wine, beer and soft drinks are included at lunch and dinner. Please note that passengers are not permitted to consume their own supplies of alcohol on board. Whether we have a morning at sea or you chose not to partake in an excursion, breakfast times have been extended, where possible, for your convenience. Times may vary and will be indicated on the Daily Programme. During good weather, early riser’s coffee, breakfast, lunch and dinner may also be served on The Lido Deck. Afternoon tea is served in The Club or in The Lounge depending on activities. Complimentary tea, coffee and biscuits are available self-service 24 hours a day in The Club. For those guests who may prefer more flexibility with regards to their meals we are delighted to offer an additional menu on board between 11.00 am and 4.00 pm. Details are available in The Club.

DISEMBARKATION

Your Cruise Director / Expedition Leader will provide you with detailed disembarkation information prior to the end of your cruise. This will include transfer information (where applicable). If you have any specific queries, please do not hesitate to contact the Cruise Director / Expedition Leader as soon as possible after embarkation.

DRESS CODE

The dress code on board is defined as casual. During the day, comfortable and casual attire is appropriate. The evenings are smart casual. Jackets and ties are not required. However, we kindly ask you to refrain from wearing shorts during evening meals in the Restaurant. You may wish to wear something a little dressier for the welcome and farewell dinners, for example, a jacket and tie for gentlemen and occassion wear for ladies. No “black tie” is necessary.

ELECTRICITY

Voltage is 110V/60Hz (American standard) and a 220V razor socket. This is only suitable for low voltage electrical appliances, e.g. mobile phone or camera charger. We recommend that you bring a two flat pin American adaptor for the 110v plug. Please note that the use of personal hairdryers, clothing irons, coffee makers, curling tongs, etc. in the cabins is strictly forbidden as they may damage the ship’s electrical system.

If you require electrical medical equipment, please notify the Reservations Department as soon as possible.

GOING ASHORE

Please wait in the public areas or in your cabin until an announcement is made with instructions to disembark. Sailing times for each port are listed in the Daily Programme. Please note sailing times and ensure that you return back to the vessel at least 30 minutes prior to departure. In some ports a passport or port landing card must be carried when going ashore. This will be announced over the PA System if required. If the ship is in a remote area and you hear a continuous blast of the ship’s horn then please return immediately to the landing site. When leaving the ship at any time while in port always ensure you have checked IN/OUT at the gangway.

HAIR & BEAUTY SALON

MS Hebridean Sky has a hairdresser providing haircuts and hairstyling. Some beauty treatments and massage are also available. Appointments for hair styling can be made onboard at the Reception Desk. Fees for all treatments are available at Reception and will be charged to your on board account. Each cabin is equipped with a hairdryer which can be found in the right hand top drawer of the dresser.

HEALTH & HYGIENE

We have comprehensive plans in place to protect the health and hygiene of our passengers and crew. These are kept up to date in line with new advice and guidance and are continually evaluated. The ventilation system provides all cabins and communal areas with fresh non recycled air. There is no recirculation of air on board. UV technology has been installed to ensure no risk of transmission via ventilation units. Hand sanitisers are present throughout the vessel particularly at entrances to dining venues and at the gangway. We kindly ask that you ensure to use these regularly. When it is required to bring in enhanced procedures you will be advised in either your pre cruise documentation or on board.

LAUNDRY SERVICE

Laundry service is available on board. Laundry bags and a price list can be found in the wardrobe in your cabin. Please complete the laundry list and leave it together with the bag of items to be laundered on your bed. Your laundered items will be returned within 24 hours. There are no public launderette or ironing facilities on board. In the interest of safety we ask that you do not use an electric iron in your cabin. An ironing service is available at reasonable cost. Dry cleaning facilities are not available on board. In the interest of the environment, towels will not be automatically changed every day. We ask that you put used towels on the bathroom floor if you wish them to be changed for fresh towels. Towels left hanging on the towel rack will not be changed.

All passenger decks can be reached by lift. Please do not use the lift in the case of a fire or an emergency.

LOST PROPERTY

Before you disembark the ship, please check your cabin to ensure you do not leave anything behind. Onboard the ship, any liquids, cosmetics, paper(s) and perishable items left behind will be disposed of immediately. Any books left on board the ship will be incorporated into the ship’s library or donated to charity. Other items left behind on the ship will be kept on board for 1 month or 2 cruises (whichever is the longer period), and after this time, any unclaimed items will be given to a local charity at the next main port the ship visits. If you discover you have left any items behind, please contact Noble Caledonia within 21 days of disembarking. If we are able to recover your item(s) we will contact you to arrange delivery or collection, and any costs incurred will be at your own expense.

Although reception staff are happy to post letters on your behalf, they may not be able to do so straightaway or at the port of call at which you make such a request. Some postal services are unreliable and many letters or postcards that you ask to be delivered on your behalf may be delayed or even lost en route. Under no circumstances can we be held liable for such occurrences.

MEDICAL FACILITIES

Medical services are available 24 hours a day. There is a Doctor on board, and crew members are trained in first aid. Cabin visits by the ship’s Doctor are available. Please note that all consultations and services are charged for. To arrange an appointment with the ship’s Doctor please contact Reception. It takes some people longer to find their sea legs. Sea sickness tablets are available from Reception, and should be taken at least one hour prior to departure.

MINI BAR/FRIDGE

This is stocked with complimentary soft drinks and beer and will be replenished daily/on request.

News channels are available on your cabin TV and in addition daily news bulletins can be found at Reception and in The Library.

NOBLE CALEDONIA TEAM

Throughout your cruise you will be accompanied by your Noble Caledonia team who will be happy to assist you with any queries or requests you may have.

All passengers will have their own “ship account” which allows you to sign a receipt for any expenses and then settle your bill at the Reception Desk at the end of the cruise. We recommend that you leave money and other valuables in the safe. Kindly remember to remove all items from the safe before disembarking the ship at the end of your cruise.

SAFETY DRILL & SAFETY

International Maritime Law requires a lifeboat safety drill to take place prior to sailing. All guests must attend this compulsory and important exercise. Please listen for the announcements. During the drill, all ships services will be suspended. Your assigned lifeboat station, location of your life jacket and the signal for lifeboat and fire drills are clearly explained on the emergency card posted on the back of your cabin door. Life jackets are located in your cabin. During the safety drill you will be shown how to wear the life jacket. It is essential that you take certain safety precautions while on board:

• Walk, never run and be especially careful on wet and slippery decks.

• Ladies are advised to wear low heeled shoes especially on deck.

• Footwear should be worn at all times.

• Hold on to the handrails in passageways and stairways.

SHIP’S ID CARD

These personal ID cards with essential information are issued to each guest during embarkation. Please remember to check in and out at the gangway with the crew member on duty in order for them to ensure that you are on board prior to sailing.

SMOKING POLICY

The MS Hebridean Sky offers a smoke-free cruise environment. Smoking is not permitted inside the ship, including the balcony areas and is only permitted in the designated area outside on Mawson Deck aft. Please never throw any cigarette ends overboard – the breeze could carry the smouldering end back on board and start a fire. We thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

If you wish to make an outside call, please check at Reception to purchase a prepaid telephone card and instructions. The Majestic Line has been hosting Scottish cruising holidays on the waters off the West Coast for over 15 years. Most of our cruises depart from Oban, gateway to the Highlands and the Islands of the Outer and Inner Hebrides – sailing in these waters is the best way to explore the islands and the beautiful coastline of Scotland. Our five small cruise ships are beautiful floating hotels and have been designed to access remote and sheltered anchorages that larger boats find inaccessible. Sailing from April to October we make the most of the longer summer days with opportunities for walking ashore and wildlife spotting or just relaxing onboard. You can find out more about where we go on our Cruising Area.

The Scottish Small Ship Cruising Holiday

Our five small cruise ships offer you a truly unique experience, a Scottish holiday with a difference. Our converted fishing trawlers, Glen Massan and Glen Tarsan , provide accommodation for up to 11 guests, whilst our purpose built vessels, Glen Etive and Glen Shiel , can accommodate a maximum of 12 guests. Each of those boats has a crew of four onboard; Skipper, Chef, Engineer and Steward.

For 2023, we are delighted to introduce Glen Rosa. With a crew of Skipper and Chef, she can accommodate up to 6 guests in 3 ensuite cabins.

Our crews provide the very best in Scottish Hospitality and do their best to ensure your cruise runs smoothly. Meals are freshly prepared on board utilizing the wonderful Scottish Larder with our Chefs focusing on locally sourced seasonal produce – seafood is of course a highlight for many on our cruises with mussels from Loch Spelve, langoustine and occasionally a lobster caught in the creels that we keep on board.

The Majestic Line offers a choice of 17 different cruise itineraries from 3 nights , 6 nights or 10 nights . We cruise waters surrounding some of Scotland's iconic islands such as Islay, Jura, Mull, Skye, St Kilda, Staffa and Iona, the small isles of Rum, Muck and Eigg. You can go ashore to enjoy the fantastic scenery, take a walk, visit one of the malt whisky distilleries or gin distilleries, watch the local wildlife. We also operate a river cruise through the Caledonian Canal and Neptune’s Staircase to Loch Ness and sail to Inverness. Discover our Cruises .

The seas off the West Coast of Scotland provide an incredible habitat for all sorts of marine wildlife and our guests regularly see dolphins, porpoises, seals, basking sharks, minke whales, orca, not to mention the amazing sea birds from puffins and petrels to gannets and guillemots. Find out more about the species we regularly see at Wildlife of the West Coast of Scotland and Hebrides .

If you are looking to discover the West Coast of Scotland and the Hebrides in a relaxing and enjoyable way with good company and excellent food then a Majestic Line cruise is the perfect Scottish holiday for you. Discover your Scottish cruising holiday here .

My 6th cruise review and the most difficult to write as mere words are not enough to describe a trip or rather expedition that took us to the Edge of the World, a very apt description for the St Kilda Archipelago. An unforgettable, once in a lifetime shared adventure of epic proportions.

MS Hebridean Sky

The MS Hebridean Sky is one of our three flag ships and sister vessel to the MS Island Sky and MS Caledonian Sky. All three vessels were built in the same ship yard in Italy at similar times and share the same excellent attributes that make them three of the finest small ships in the world. Formerly known as the Sea Explorer, the vessel underwent a multi-million pound refurbishment in Sweden in Spring 2016 before being re-launched as the MS Hebridean Sky. We are delighted you have chosen the MS Hebridean Sky for your upcoming voyage. The 118-passenger, all-suite vessel is one of the finest small ships in the world and benefits from unusually spacious accommodation, public areas and outside decks. You will find the atmosphere on board akin to a private yacht or country hotel with a little music in the lounge or bar after dinner, talks from our onboard team and informative port briefings from your Cruise Director or Expedition Leader. After a day of exploration ashore, you will return to the comfort and peace of a well-run and exceedingly comfortable ship. Along with the Captain and officers and the Noble Caledonia team, our crew of 70 are dedicated to offering you the best possible experience during your time on board.

Adventure Cruises in Hebridean

Hebridean cruises wind their way through the rugged islands off the western coast of Scotland , known as the Inner and Outer Hebrides. Consisting of dramatic coastlines and sea cliffs scalloped with white-sand beaches and secluded lochs, the scenery experienced on cruises of the Hebrides is breathtaking. Meanwhile, visits to the islands delve into the region’s fascinating history, as well as its current cultural gifts, including comforting food and peaty Scotch.

Divided into the Inner and Outer Hebrides, these 130-some islands each boast a unique history, landscape, and character. From the archeological mysteries of the Isle of Lewis and the massive sea bird colonies of the Shiant Isles to the smoky and complex flavors of Islay single-malts, cruises of the Hebrides explore Scotland at its most beautifully extreme.

Top things to do and see on a Hebridean Cruise

The Hebridean Islands are divided into the Inner Hebrides grouping, nearest the mainland, and the Outer Hebrides, farther out into the Atlantic.

Inner Hebrides Islands

The Inner Hebrides Islands consist of thirty-six islands just off the Scottish coast. On a Hebridean boat cruise, visitors discover and explore the unique beauty and character of man of these islands.

The Isle of Islay , dubbed the “Queen of the Hebrides”, is the southernmost island of the Inner Hebrides and features a rugged coast surrounding a mountainous and windswept interior. The island is perhaps best known for its eight distillers of world-renowned single-malt whisky, including Lagavulin, Bowmore and Laphroaig. Even teetotallers may enjoy a Scotch tour, given that distilleries house many of the island’s best restaurants. The café at the Ardbeg distillery, for example, serves excellent homemade soups and baked goods—in addition to fantastic whisky.

The Isle of Mull features the Sound of Mull, brimming with marine life, including dolphins, porpoises and sea eagles. Tobermory , located on the Sound of Mull, is known for its distinctive, candy-colored houses and serves as a perfect base from which to explore Aros Park, its waterfall and wonderful views over the sound. The nearby Treshnish Isle of Lunga is home to puffin and razorbill colonies, while the waters surrounding the Isle of Staffa attract Minke and pilot whales, as well as seals and dolphins.

The Isle of Skye is characterized by rocky coastline dotted with picturesque fishing villages and enigmatic castles, jagged mountains rising from among jewel-like lochs. The islands is accessed through the Sound of Sleat. Its largest town, Portree, is an excellent spot to spend time enjoying the salt-laden breeze on a coastal walk or enjoying local food. Scotch-lovers will want to have a dram of Talisker, the island’s only producer of single-malt.

The Small Isles , just off the Isle of Skye, include Canna, Rum, Eigg and Muck. Eigg features the impressive ridge of An Sgurr, which can be hiked by intrepid visitors, while Laig Bay offers breathtaking views of the Cuillins of Rum. For its part, Rum, is perfect for hikes cooled by the ocean winds. Canna is home to over 150 species of birds and offers numerous trails to fascinating archeological sites. On the Isle of Muck, smallest of the Small Isles, visitors can walk from Port Mor, snugged within a natural harbour, to North Bay, stopping in at rustic shops and watching the waters for otters.

Outer Hebrides Islands

The Outer Hebrides Islands , more remote and bearing the brunt of the winds and waves of the Atlantic Ocean, are explored on more adventurous small ship cruises of Scotland. A chain of over a hundred islands, the Outer Hebrides offer an even more rugged and untamed side of the Western Isles of Scotland.

The Isle of Barra is the southernmost inhabited island among the Outer Hebrides and the site of numerous important archeological finds, including the remains of a Viking settlement. The ruins of Cille Bharra offer a glimpse into the island’s rich history, while Kisimul Castle looms over Castlebay and is believed to date back to 1030 AD. Beyond its historical riches, the Isle of Barra offers the opportunity to kayak along deserted beaches and sheltered bays while keeping an eye out for seals, otters and various sea birds.

The Isle of Harris is home to the Isle of Harris Knitwear Company, producer of the famous Harris Tweed. At its shop in Grosbay, visitors can splurge on an authentic Harris jacket or pullover.

The Isle of Lewis is like an island-sized open-air museum—or a trip back in time. The island’s main attraction are the Callanish, or Calanais, rocks, a garden of mysterious standing stones set in the pattern of a cross with a central ring. It is believed that they were erected during the Neolithic era and played a role in pagan ceremonies during the Bronze Age. In Gerrennan, visitors can wander the Blackhouse Village, a recreation of early settler homes that provide insight into the lives of 19th Century Hebridean families. From the village, paths offer excellent walking and cycling routes to nearby beaches.

The Shiant Isles are a small group of islands and protected area, and home to absolutely massive sea bird colonies. Though exact numbers are nearly impossible to obtain, it is estimated that the islands shelter between 15,000 and 18,000 guillemots, from 8000 to 11,000 razorbills, four to six thousand fulmars, and a staggering 240 thousand puffins, fully two percent of the world’s puffin population in a single area. Here, bird watching consists of simply keeping one’s eyes open as the birds fill the sky.

St. Kilda is an archipelago on the very edge of Scottish territory, nearly lost in the Atlantic Ocean. St. Kilda boasts the highest cliffs in the United Kingdom, including the cliffs of Conachair, towering 425 meters (1400 feet) above the crashing sea. The islands are home to the largest colony of gannets in the world, as well as puffins, shearwaters, petrels and shags. The surrounding waters are visited by Minke whales, Atlantic grey seals, dolphins, and even orca. On land, signs of human habitation date back to the Bronze Age, including burial sites in Village Bay.

Top Tips for visiting the Hebrides on a cruise

  • The best Hebridean Island cruises include plenty of hiking over rocky terrain, so pack good hiking shoes.
  • Pack a warm jacket and waterproof shell to shield you from the Atlantic Ocean winds and spray.
  • Bring binoculars and a camera to get a close look at the region’s wildlife.
  • Be sure to bring seasickness medication as occasional storms may lead to rough waters.
  • So as to not sound like too much of a tourist, pronounce Islay correctly: “eye-la”.

Best time to cruise the Hebridean Islands

It is important to plan ahead, given that, regardless of the time of year, the Hebrides—and particularly the Outer Hebrides—are subject to strong winds and occasional storms. These storms, however, are part of the region’s character and should not be viewed as a deterrent.

The best time to take a Hebridean cruise is in the summer, from May to August, when the sky is clearer, the days longer and the air warmer. This is also the best time to see whales and orca.

Fall comes to the Hebrides in September and October and brings cooler weather and the turning of the leaves.

The Hebrides in late-October to early-March is winter, with shorter days, cold weather and more frequent rains. Note that some Hebridean cruises may not be available during this period.

The Hebrides in late-March to early-May is Spring, when the days get longer and the islands greener.

Where do Hebridean cruises depart from?

Typically, most Scottish small ship cruises to the Hebridean Islands depart from Oban or Inverness. Visitors will fly into Glasgow’s international airport, followed by a transfer to Oban or Inverness.

Formerly known as Abbotsinch Airport, Glasgow airport is served by most major airlines, though many flights from North America will require a connection through one of the United Kingdoms major airports.

Hebridean Sky: Ship Details and Overview

Photo of Hebridean Sky

Formerly sailing under the name ‘Sea Explorer’, the Hebridean Sky underwent a 6 million dollar refurbishment early in 2016 and the new boat hit the waters in June. The vessel has been known for years for its excellent on board service and refined elegance.

The atmosphere on board the Hebridean Sky is perhaps similar to a large luxury yacht. There is always a strong feeling of camaraderie aboard the ship and passengers will love the state of the art equipment. The ship has an ice-strengthened hull and is fully stabilized for passengers that suffer from sea sickness.

The vessel provides excellent fuel efficiency, state of the art navigation and a small fleet of zodiacs, making it the perfect luxury exploration ship! All cabins are spacious and light with windows, TVs and private en suites and the public areas include a live lounge, library and fitness center.

Expert Aboard: Hebridean Sky Ship Review

AdventureSmith’s Mary Montalbano writes this detailed Hebridean Sky ship review after being aboard an Antarctica cruise . Included are insights from AdventureSmith’s Leslie Camacho , who cruised from Ushuaia, Argentina, on a charter of Hebridean Sky by another operator. While Hebridean Sky 21 was capped at 73 guests for Mary’s air cruise with Antarctica21 , the ship’s Hebridean Sky configuration can accommodate up to 114 guests, when she cruises from from Ushuaia, Argentina with Polar Latitudes . Use the AdventureSmith team’s small ship cruise reviews and insights to inform, inspire and book your next Antarctica trip aboard a small cruise ship .

The Ship’s Feel: Luxury Meets Adventure

Hebridean Sky’s elegance and exploratory nature make her an ideal ship to explore the White Continent. Rough seas and snow storms are met with stabilizers and hot towels. Mahogany and brass blend with breathtaking photos of Antarctic wildlife and explorers. Baby grand pianos share space with flatscreen TVs, ready for a concert or a lecture. And marbled walkways gaze up at boards full of information on wildlife and landing sites. Guests mingle in sweaters and thermals while staff mindfully go about their duties in button-down, expedition garb. With the supreme comfort of traveling aboard Hebridean Sky, it’s easy to forget the harsh conditions outside.

Finding Your Sweet Spot on This All-Suite Ship

Hebridean Sky is one of the few all-suite ships cruising Antarctica. Having viewed every cabin, I can confirm there is not one undesirable room option on this Antarctica small ship. Every cabin offers ample closet space, plenty of drawers, a full vanity, a multi-port charger ready to simultaneously power all of your gadgets (from anywhere in the world), a comfortable couch, and plenty of hooks to hold your jacket, snowpants and more (which you’ll change into and out of multiple times each day).

My cabin was a Window Suite on Deck 3. Despite being a lower-cost cabin, I wouldn’t have changed it. Deck 3 is the lowest passenger deck on air cruises, meaning more stability. The picture windows let in lots of light, and the cabin feels gigantic because the floor pushes to the outer wall of the ship. Without moving a thing, I could have done yoga comfortably with all the unoccupied floorspace.

Deck 4’s Promenade Suites also have a large window, but it looks out onto the track that wraps around the ship, meaning the floorspace is smaller and guests may walk by your window at any time; that said, Leslie felt her cabin offered ample space for two. Deck 4’s Deluxe Suites #414 and #415 are slightly larger and face the bow, offering beautiful views that are difficult to withstand from the outside deck (unless weather is agreeable). Note that these cabins’ windows are boarded during Drake Passage crossings, however.

I recommend taking advantage of the open-air yet heated Observation Area of Deck 6.

Bonus: for round-trip Ushuaia cruises, all cabins on Decks 4, 5 and 6 come stocked with champagne and chocolates upon embarkation and feature a complimentary mini bar restocked daily with beer, wine and soft drinks, akin to a first-class hotel. The suites of Decks 5 and 6 each offer a private balcony, which reduces cabin floorspace but provides space for special moments to take in the views alone. Though a nice luxury, you don’t necessarily need a balcony on this ship. I recommend taking advantage of the Observation Area of Deck 6, which features a heated, open-air viewing platform with protective wind shield; it was always empty of fellow passengers on my expedition.

Food Tailored to Guests

On every departure, Hebridean Sky offers an elegant dining room with buffet lunches and breakfasts, and plated dinners ordered off a menu. Often a lighter lunch option of paninis and soup is also available in The Club. An outside BBQ area on Deck 5 is typically used once on each departure, although inclement weather may move the cookout inside to the dining room. And daily briefings and returns to the ship following an excursion are accompanied by hot drinks and appetizers–sometimes even cocktails or champagne.

The menu and buffet fare reflect the passenger complement on each unique departure. Among the travelers aboard with Leslie was an Indian group, and dinner one night featured all Indian foods; another night featured Filippino fare, cooked with care by the Philippines-based crew. I traveled aboard with a Chinese group, and every meal offered at least one Chinese dish.

Both Leslie and I noted the alternative options available for those who had a special diet or simply wanted something different. When the vegetarian dinner option one night included a food I was allergic to, I asked for a vegetable burger–minutes later I was served a patty of freshly fried vegetables, not simply a pre-made option taken out of the freezer. The tailored food offered aboard Hebridean Sky exemplifies how a small ship with an attentive staff can make your experience unique and customized.

The Crew: A Polished Polar Voyage

The kitchen and waitstaff, as well as the rest of the Hebridean Sky crew, is polished in every way. When they’re not attending to all the details of your multi-course meal, they’re literally polishing brass throughout the ship. The bartender always offers your preferred drink, your cabin attendant never stops smiling and remains accessible, the maître d’ ensures you never eat alone (unless you want to) and steers you away from foods he knows don’t jive with your special diet, and the head chef makes regular appearances in the dining room. A white tablecloth and fresh flowers greet you at every meal, and coffee/tea, beer, wine and soft drinks flow without a beat. Nowhere else have I experienced such high-class service while in my base layers.

Many Ways to Cruise Hebridean Sky

The experience aboard Hebridean Sky may differ slightly depending on which operator is chartering your departure. Deck plan and suite options differ. Cruises via Ushuaia offer Porthole Suites on Deck 2, for increased stability and a lower price point, while still maintaining elevator access to all upper decks. Also on Ushuaia departures are complimentary in-cabin luxuries (champagne upon arrival, minibar restocked daily and Nespresso machine by request) for all cabins starting on Deck 4. On air cruise departures, Hebridean Sky offers two dedicated Single Suites, avoiding a single supplement.

When Hebridean Sky crosses the Drake Passage, her programming involves citizen science.

When Hebridean Sky crosses the Drake Passage, heading to or from Ushuaia, her programming involves citizen science. This was Leslie’s most fulfilling and inspiring activity during her Antarctica cruise: collecting and documenting data on weather, wildlife and water temperature patterns, to be sent to Antarctic researchers. For those interested in becoming true ambassadors of the White Continent, seek out Hebridean Sky’s non-air-cruise departures. Another benefit to crossing the Drake Passage aboard Hebridean Sky is the extra onboard activities enabled by four days at sea: trivia games, auctions benefiting worthwhile groups and causes, photo contests and additional time to connect with fellow travelers.

Experienced, Excited Guides

Hebridean Sky attracts highly qualified guides with years of experience in Antarctica. For example, one of my guides was a polar explorer, who treated us to a lecture on skiing to both poles; one of Leslie’s guides had been featured in a National Geographic documentary. An international mix of energetic guides made for a well-rounded experience. Each day’s briefing featured a rotating cast of characters treating us to a mix of short lectures and skits on a range of topics including ornithology, meteorology, marine mammals, polar history and more. The best guides seek out the best ships (and employers), and our guides were happy to enjoy a luxury ship built for 114 at only 73 guests. This sentiment is apparent while enjoying meals or after-dinner drinks with your guides, or even exchanging contact information to keep in touch. Even in challenging conditions, our guides got us off the ship at least once every day, which also speaks to their knowledge, adaptability and eagerness to explore.

Elegance Over Activeness

Hebridean Sky’s refined feel contrasts remarkably with the untamed wilds through which she sails. The level of comfort and finely attuned attention to detail aboard this ship is amazing. But while she impresses with ambiance and service, she lacks in active options both on board and off.

During Hebridean Sky’s charter by either operator, kayaking is the primary activity. On Leslie’s departure, the kayakers had excursions separate of the rest of the guests, missing out on what the majority of people were experiencing during landings and Zodiac cruises. On my departure, the kayakers had separate excursions but also got to explore every landing site with the rest of us, after paddling, so they never missed out. Also on my air cruise, energetic guests like me could sign up for added-cost hiking and snowshoeing when the weather and landing sites permit, but the conditions weren’t in our favor.

While activities are always weather-dependent (even the paddlers on my trip weren’t always able to launch their kayaks and instead joined us in the Zodiacs), fitness-minded Antarctica travelers should choose a ship that offers additional opportunities to be active, like skiing, mountaineering, one-time paddling and stand-up paddleboarding. Additionally, if you want to maintain an exercise routine, then a ship that offers a gym will be a better option. Nine laps around Hebridean Sky’s Deck 4 exterior track equals one mile, but that’s one very long and trying mile when there’s inclement weather.

My Hebridean Sky Ship Review Takeaways

The Hebridean Sky offers a classy and captivating Antarctica experience. Her spacious suites, polished crew, sophisticated service and engaging guides make for an unforgettable experience. Cruise aboard this Antarctica expedition ship for her upscale feel and adventurous attitude. Enjoy the extra space in your suite to stretch out. Appreciate the access, both formal and informal, to your passionate guides. And savor the many moments of camaraderie encouraged by a small ship with an even smaller guest count, as I do mine: closing down the restaurant due to a long, exciting conversation with newfound friends; singing along to my favorite songs played live by crew member Randy in The Club; looking for the mysterious and fleeting albatross with my birder guide; and enjoying a meal with a modern-day polar explorer. After an incredible voyage aboard Hebridean Sky, the only hard part will be saying goodbye.

Hebridean Princess Celebrates 60th Anniversary

hebridean cruise ship

On Tuesday 12th March, we celebrated the 60 th anniversary of the launch of our flagship vessel, the 48-passenger cruise ship Hebridean Princess, formerly MV Columba, with a formal lunch on board attended by HRH The Princess Royal.

On the 12th March 1964, MV Columba was launched at the Hall Russell yard in Aberdeen, and after extensive rebuilding renamed as Hebridean Princess in 1989.

The vessel is the only cruise ship to have received a Royal Warrant.

Of the anniversary, Hebridean Island Cruises‘ Managing Director, Ken Charleson, said:

“We were delighted to welcome HRH The Princess Royal back on board Hebridean Princess to help us celebrate such a momentous occasion. Since 1989, Hebridean Princess has established herself as the epitome of luxury, small-ship Scottish cruising, earning an enviable reputation for her renowned level of service and attention to detail.”

Charleson added:

“It is testament to her design and build quality that Hebridean Princess is still sailing the waters for which she was designed and built. After thirty-five years of luxury cruising, Hebridean Princess has outlived MV Columba.”

My 7 Favorite Cruises In And Around Europe

W hat I love most about cruising around Europe is the huge choice in types of cruises you can go on. Because Europe includes hot and sunny destinations like Spain and Italy, and cold and interesting places like Scandinavia and Scotland, you can take a very different cruise each time around Europe. You can pull up in pretty ports in Greece and swim from the boat and you can sail around the shores of Scotland and take a cold water plunge — if you’re brave enough.

The coastlines of Europe are vastly different to one another and the types of cruises you can take are too. River cruises, yachts, island cruises, and large fun-packed cruise lines all sail around these shores. Plus, you can start your cruise in Europe and sail off beyond the continent, and then return after an adventure.

Here are my 7 favorite cruises in and around Europe.

1. Starclippers

Rome round trip .

This seven-night cruise begins and ends in Rome, visiting Lipari, Sicily, Amalfi, Sorrento, and Ponza. What I love about the Starclipper cruises is they are informal and casual — you dine with other guests or by yourself, you don’t have a set table for meals, and you can wear what you like as there’s no dress code. But at the same time, the interior of the ship and the cabins are sophisticated and semi luxurious, so it feels casual and chic all in one go.

This particular cruise is on the Starflyer , which has two pools and a sun deck. There’s no entertainment on board, though there might be some games in the evening, but children are welcome over the age of 6 months. I love these small-yacht ships that can get you into ports the larger cruise ships can’t, and this one is a beautiful ship with an atmosphere of relaxation and easygoingness. You can even join with the crew and help to sail the ship if you like.

2. French Waterways

Hotel barge prospérité: côte d’or.

If you like things really intimate, you can book a six- or eight-person cruise with French Waterways and have the barge to yourselves. This one is a canal cruise in France, but they also offer river cruises. The rooms on the barge are hotel standard and there’s a sun deck and a hot tub on board. The cruise ambles along the canals in the Côte d’Or, stopping off for a walking tour in Dijon, shopping and markets, and wine tasting at a vineyard.

This is a really relaxing way to cruise in France with family or friends, but you can’t book onto this cruise as a single person or a couple. This is a chartered barge that is priced for the maximum number of people it sleeps — six or eight. If you’re experienced, you can also choose to pilot the boat yourself.

3. G Adventures

Sailing from split to dubrovnik.

Sailing along the Dalmatian Coast is a unique experience and visiting Croatia is a trip full of historical sites and exploration. The yachts you’ll travel on with G Adventures give you a truly small-boat experience. If you want a luxurious cabin and lush interiors, this isn’t for you, but if you want a sense of adventure and an authentic sailing experience, this is definitely it.

The yacht accommodates a maximum of eight people, but you don’t have to be a part of the group, you can book onto this as a single person or couple. Note: If you book a solo trip, you will be sharing your cabin with someone else. It’s also worth noting that you’ll need a medium level of physical fitness to take part in the activities on this tour, which can include kayaking and hiking.

This is a self-catering trip, and while there’s plenty of opportunities to eat at the destinations, there aren’t any meals offered on board. This also means that when you eat your own food on the ship and/or cook for yourself in the kitchen, you are expected to tidy up after.

4. Hebridean Adventures

Hebridean island odyssey.

Sailing on board the MV Hjalmar Bjørge with the Northern Light Cruising Company, Hebridean Adventures brings you a trip like no other around the Hebrides Islands in Scotland. This nine-night cruise stops at Mull, Coll & Tiree, the Small Isles, and the Isle of Skye. Most people who take this cruise are wildlife enthusiasts and are sailing with the hope of spotting dolphins, puffins, eagles, and more. But even if you only have a passing interest in wildlife, this is a stunning way to get a bit closer to it.

Facilities are limited on board and the cabins are no-frills, with some only including bunk beds. You do have to share bathroom facilities, which is a challenge for some people, but guests are all aware of this and are very considerate. The onboard chef is a real plus on this cruise and they cater for any dietary requirements, cooking all meals fresh every day. The boat might be basic, but the scenery is breathtaking and it’s a unique type of cruise.

5. Celebrity Cruises

Egypt & israel.

Beginning in Athens, Greece, this 10-night cruise with Celebrity Cruises will stop off at Israel and Egypt before returning to Athens. There are 3 days at sea on this cruise, and on board the Celebrity Infinity , there’s a casino, an art gallery, a sun deck, indoor and outdoor pool areas, a spa, tennis, nightlife, and restaurants and bars.

This is a large cruise ship experience with capacity for 2,170 people. Rooms are hotel standard, some with verandas, and the experience of being on the ship is as much a part of the trip as exploring the stop-off destinations. The cruise gives you the perfect mix between Europe and a little further afield. For anyone who hasn’t strayed beyond Europe before, it’s a great way to get a taste of Egypt and Israel.

6. Variety Cruises

Italy & malta.

Beginning in Naples and sailing along the coast of Italy and around its islands, this small boat intimate cruise with Variety Cruises ends on the 8th day in Malta. At first, I thought it was unusual to end in a totally different place than where the cruise began, but actually, I loved the chance to get to know somewhere separate from the starting point.

The ship has capacity for 44 people and is a laid-back experience with just a sundeck, informal restaurant, bar, and swim platform. Most of your time is spent off the boat, exploring parts of Italy tourists don’t usually visit, and that’s the real draw with these small-boat cruises. These are ports large cruise ships can’t enter, so you feel like you’re on a voyage of discovery. Rooms are comfortable and pleasantly decorated and designed, but you won’t be spending much time in them. The Italian islands and Malta are beautiful places to explore.

7. Princess Cruises

Grand 11-day mediterranean.

This big cruise ship experience with Princess Cruises begins in Rome and travels to Greece, Turkey, Sicily, and Mallorca, ending in Barcelona, Spain. Aboard the Sun Princess ship, it’s all about fun on a large scale, with climbing walls, swimming pools, a spa, bars, cafés, restaurants, evening entertainment, and kids clubs.

It is aimed at families and there’s lots for all ages to do, but it’s also a great cruise to take as a couple or by yourself. There’s something going on all the time, but you can still find some quiet time on the sun deck. There’s 3 days at sea on this 11-day cruise and you’ll certainly never get bored. I love the stop-offs and visits to four different countries, with some really diverse excursions offered at every stop.
