Check out these musicals based on films:

Billy elliot.

Billy Elliot arrived in cinemas in 2000 telling the story of a boy from County Durham who took up ballet lessons. The film is set around the backdrop of the miners' strike of 1984-85. In 2005 the musical version opened at the Victoria Palace with music by Elton John and book and lyrics by Lee Hall (who also went on to pen the screenplay to Elton's biopic, Rocketman ). The musical was a huge success and ran in the West End for just over a decade closing in 2016 ahead of a refurbishment of the theatre which would then welcome Hamilton as its next resident. The musical was broadcast live across cinemas in 2014 and during this period had our very own Ruthie Henshall as Billy's teacher Mrs. Wilkinson.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

While Chitty Chitty Bang Bang may feel like it was always designed for the stage, we had to wait a while for technology to catch up before we saw our fine four fendered friend up on the stage. The 1968 film was based on the book by Bond writer Ian Fleming which starred Dick Van Dyke as Caractacus Potts. However, the story wasn't put on the stage until 2002 where it opened at the London Palladium starring Michael Ball as Caractacus, Emma Williams as Truly Scrumptious and Carrie Hope Fletcher as Jemima. The musical version included the songs from the original including 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang', 'Hushabye Mountain' and 'Me Ol' Bamboo'. The film's original composers, the Sherman Brothers (also known for Mary Poppins ) composed six new songs for the stage adaptation.

Grey Gardens

Grey Gardens is one of the few musicals that is based on a documentary. The 1975 film showed the lives of Edith Ewing Bouvier Beale (Big Edie) and her daughter Edith Bouvier Beale (Little Edie), they were related to First Lady Jackie Kennedy but found themselves in an isolated life in a decaying mansion overrun with cats in their later life. The first act is a fictional imagining of what the mother and daughter's lives may have been like in the 1940s as rich aristocrats living lives of luxury. The second act jumps to 1975 with the actress who played Big Edie in Act I switching over to play Little Edie in Act II. This part of the musical is based on the content of the documentary pulling lines directly from the source material.

Hairspray has been a huge hit since it first opened on Broadway in 2002 packed with comedy and feel-good songs. The show is based on the 1988 film of the same name which was written, directed and produced by John Waters, and starred Ricki Lake as Tracy Turnblad and the legendary drag queen Divine as Tracy's mother, Edna. The musical has plenty of feel-good songs including 'Good Morning Baltimore' and 'You Can't Stop the Beat' and of course the powerful 'I Know Where I've Been'. The musical adaptation was successful enough that it was then itself adapted into a movie musical in 2007!

Before the Mean Girls came along, the Heathers were terrorising the hallways. The 1989 film has a cult following and is considered one of the greatest coming of age films of all time so it's no surprise that Heathers eventually got the musical theatre treatment. The musical quickly became a fan favourite with plenty of us listening to the Broadway cast recording on repeat when it was released and jumping for joy when the Heathers arrived in the West End. The show proved to be popular here having run on the West End twice already as well as getting a UK tour.

Kinky Boots

Set in a shoe factory in Northampton, Kinky Boots is a story about celebrating difference and accepting each other. The show's book was written by Harvey Fierstein with songs by Cyndi Lauper after opening on Broadway in 2012 it wasn't long until the musical hit the West End with the show opening at the Adelphi theatre in 2015.

Legally Blonde

How do you improve on the iconic film that is Legally Blonde? Why, add some amazing songs to it that's how! Legally Blonde has been a hit among theatre fans since it opened in 2007 with its campy up-beat songs such as 'Omigod You Guys', 'Positive', 'So Much Better' and 'Legally Blonde'. The show made it to the West End in 2009 with Sheridan Smith in the lead as Elle Woods. It's since toured the UK twice with Faye Brookes and Lucie Jones in the leading role respectively.

Pretty Woman

The iconic 1990 Julia Roberts film is one of the more recent films to get the musical theatre treatment. Pretty Woman: The Musical premiered in Chicago in 2018 and transferred to Broadway a few months later where it ran for a year. The show opened on the West End in early 2020 but closed after a month because of the COVID-19 pandemic - however as theatres returned, they opened back up in their new home at the Savoy Theatre.

Little Shop of Horrors

This was another cult classic that went from film to stage, to film again. The first version of Little Shop of Horrors was a black and white B movie which was released in 1960. The musical adaptation came out in 1982 with music and lyrics by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman – the pair who went on to pen music for some Disney greats including The Little Mermaid, Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast . The show's score includes the songs 'Skid Row (Downtown)', 'Somewhere That's Green' and 'Suddenly Seymour'. The musical was quickly adapted into a movie musical in 1986 and there are plans for another film with Billy Porter in the role of Audrey II.

Singin' in the Rain

With how well this story adapts to the stage we wouldn't be surprised if people thought the stage version of Singin' in the Rain came first. However, the beloved 1952 Gene Kelly film didn't make it to the stage until 1983 when it opened at the London Palladium with Tommy Steele as Don Lockwood. The stage version has come with plenty of amendments throughout its various revivals but still includes the songs we all love including 'Fit as a Fiddle', 'Good Mornin'', 'Would You' and of course, 'Singin' in the Rain'.

Sugar, butter, flour. Waitress the musical has captured our hearts as we learn about what baking can do. The story is based on the 2007 film written by Adrienne Shelly who also directed and starred in the film. Sadly, Adrienne didn't live to see the film's release where it received positive reviews. The stage adaptation has a book by Jessie Nelson and music and lyrics by Sara Bareilles. Sara has also starred in the leading role both on Broadway and the West End. The show has gone on to become a fan favourite with it making a return to Broadway and heading on a UK & Ireland tour.

Review: The Bodyguard

By Jay Darcy

Article Summary

Review: The Bodyguard

Whilst I’ve seen a few shows more than once, I’ve never reviewed the same show twice – until now. I first reviewed The Bodyguard during its second UK tour, which was led by Alexandra Burke, who had starred in the first UK tour and then replaced Beverley Knight MBE in the West End revival. Alongside Sister Act , which both Knight and Burke will be returning to next year, it is one of her defining roles.

As much as I enjoyed The Bodyguard , I had not been too fussed about seeing it again – that is, until they announced the casting. There’s a new star in town, people: Pussycat Doll Melody Thornton is Rachel Marron!

Stepping into a role originated by Whitney Houston (who is literally known as “The Voice”) is no easy feat. People rarely even cover Whitney songs – and for good reason: most cannot do them justice.

Whilst the actresses who have taken on this role are all phenomenal vocalists, Whitney was in another league, so many actresses attempt to make the songs their own. Burke’s voice is noticeably deeper than Houston’s was, which allowed her to alter the iconic songs with ease. Thornton, meanwhile, is quite high-pitched, and who can forget her signature shrieks (especially in ‘Buttons’)? So she had to work extra hard to make the songs her own – and, for the most part, she succeeded.

I saw Thornton sing ‘I Will Always Love You’ at Big Night of Musicals , and whilst I already knew she could sang , she absolutely blew me away. So, I was a little disappointed by her renditions of some of the earlier songs in The Bodyguard . I felt like she was holding back, saving herself for the big ballads later on, but I also wonder if ballads suit her voice better than pop songs. That said, her rendition of ‘I’m Every Woman’ was fabulous, but it was the ballads (‘I Have Nothing’, ‘I Will Always Love You’, etc.) that really allowed her to shine.

It’s a dang shame Thornton was hardly ever allowed to sing in The Pussycat Dolls.

Some of the acting was a little questionable but that could be down to the script, with its occasional clunky writing. Some of the non-musical scenes early on felt a little awkward.

Ayden Callaghan ( Emmerdale , Hollyoaks ) is fantastic as the titular bodyguard. The karaoke scene, in which he finally lets down his guard, is one of the best scenes in the show. It’s also a nice touch including the original, country, Dolly Parton version of ‘I Will Always Love You’.

Emily-Mae is lovely to watch as Rachel’s supportive but frustrated sister, Nicki, and her voice rivals Thornton’s. I particularly enjoyed her rendition of ‘Saving All My Love for You’, and I loved the scenes in which Rachel and Nicki sang two halves of the same song, which perfectly captured their love triangle.

The set is stunning, especially Rachel’s home, which is covered in white draping. The costumes, some of which are replicas of those worn by Houston in the movie, are gorgeous.

The opening number is one of the best you’ll ever see in musical theatre. It begins with a big bang that’ll make you jump out of your seat, followed by a short scene in which someone is shot (we can only see shadows on a curtain), before Rachel performs ‘Queen of the Night’ at a concert – complete with fire! It immediately draws you in and gets you ready for a night of nostalgia.

The big moment, ‘I Will always Love You’, does not disappoint. The first two thirds are performed in Rachel’s home, when Frank walks away, with the bridge and final chorus performed on a bare stage, with Thornton stood atop a white pillar in a glittering gown. I was in awe.

Whilst the story can be serious, stressful and saddening, the curtain call is fun, feel-good and fabulous, with the entire cast performing ‘I Wanna Dance with Somebody’, and the audience finally allowed to dance and singalong! (I have never seen “please do no singalong” signs before; they made me laugh).

The Bodyguard is flawed and cheesy, just like the movie – but if you love the movie, you’ll love the musical!

The Bodyguard  runs at  Palace Theatre Manchester until April 15 and tours the UK  until December 30. Thornton and Callaghan are with the musical until its stint at  Bristol Hippodrome  (July 17 to 22), with further casting to be announced. Thornton is scheduled to appear at all evening performances only.

13 Stars of the 1980s Who Are Still Going Strong, Thank You Very Much

These stars of the 1980s are also stars of the 2020s who are still going strong after all these years.

<p>If you liked our list of stars of the 1960s who are still going strong, here’s out list of <a href="https://www.moviemaker.com/stars-of-the-1980s/">1980s stars</a> who are still shining bright. </p> <p><em>Main image: Shirley MacLaine.</em></p>

Winona Ryder

Winona Ryder returns to one of her most iconic roles later this year in Beetlejuice   Beetlejuice  , the sequel to the original Beetlejuice that made her the dark princess of the stars of the 1980s — a reputation she secured with Heathers before moving on to grown-up roles like one in Bram Stoker's Dracula .

Her other standout roles have included 1990's  Edward Scissorhands (above), directed by Beetlejuice helmer Tim Burton, as well as Little Women and The Age of Innocence .

Her recent roles have included a turn on the megahit Stranger Things and the recent Haunted Mansion reboot.

<p><em>Scarface</em>, Brian De Palma's crime-kingpin masterpiece starring Al Pacino as Miami drug lord Tony Montana, has come to be regarded as one of the most stylishly flamboyant and addictive films of all time. Here are 12 behind the scenes images of a movie we love, from the film's original 1983 promotional campaign.</p> <p class="feed-msn-follow"><a href="https://www.msn.com/en-us/community/channel/cid-acd810e0b1e9ba5d?ocid=windirect&cvid=175630fe493f4ba3bde9a33cf89d7c47&ei=11">Follow Us on MSN</a></p>

Michelle Pfeiffer

Michelle Pfeiffer has been a star since 1982's Grease 2 , but really popped in 1983's Scarface , playing Elvira, the wife of Al Pacino's Tony Montana. The three-time Oscar nominee is almost always the best part of any film she's in — from Batman Returns to Married to the Mob to the Fabulous Baker Boys .

She continues to show off her acting chops with meaty roles in recent films like The Wizard of Lies and French Exit . And she was the highlight of last year's Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania .

<p>Kevin Costner was mostly left on the cutting-room floor of <em>The Big Chill</em>, but recovered nicely by becoming one of the biggest stars of the 1980s with an astonishing 1980s run that included <em>The Untouchables</em>, <em>No Way Out</em>, <em>Bull Durham</em> and <em>Field of Dreams</em>. </p> <p>In the following years, he remained a giant, starring in <em>The Bodyguard</em> and Oliver Stone's <em>JFK</em> , as well as winning Best Picture and Best Director for 1990's <em>Dances With Wolves</em>. </p> <p>After a highly publicized exit from <em>Yellowstone</em>, the biggest show on television, he again goes West this summer with <em>Horizon: An American Saga.</em></p>

Kevin Costner

Kevin Costner was mostly left on the cutting-room floor of The Big Chill , but recovered nicely by becoming one of the biggest stars of the 1980s with an astonishing 1980s run that included The Untouchables , No Way Out , Bull Durham and Field of Dreams .

In the following years, he remained a giant, starring in The Bodyguard and Oliver Stone's JFK , as well as winning Best Picture and Best Director for 1990's Dances With Wolves .

After a highly publicized exit from Yellowstone , the biggest show on television, he again goes West this summer with Horizon: An American Saga.

<p>Jamie Lee Curtis followed up her 1978 debut in <em>Halloween </em>with a stellar ’80s run that included <em>Trading Places</em>, <em>Perfect</em> and <em>A Fish Called Wanda</em>, then had a massive hit opposite Arnold Schwarzenegger in <em>True Lies</em>. </p> <p>And yet, somehow, she’s only peaked in the last few years: She was the best part of the new <em>Halloween</em> trilogy, stole the show in <em>Knives Out</em>, and won her first Oscar this year for <em>Everything Everywhere All at Once</em>. She’s also compulsively watchable in the new season of <em>The Bear</em>.</p>

Jamie Lee Curtis

Talk about peaking late in your career: Curtis won her first Oscar last year for Everything Everywhere All at Once , and hasn't slowed down. She was excellent in the second season of The Bear , and will soon executive produce and appear in The Sticky , about a Canadian maple-syrup heist.

Though a child of Hollywood, Curtis paid her dues in a run of scream-queen roles starting with her 1978 debut in Halloween. She became one of the greatest stars of the 1980s with a remarkable run included Trading Places , Perfect and A Fish Called Wanda .

Of course she also had a massive hit opposite Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1994 James Cameron blockbuster True Lies .

<p>Three of them, of course, are “I’ll be back.” Don’t believe us? <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6fiDs56SJgU" rel="noopener">Watch this</a>.</p>

Arnold Schwarzenegger

A star of bodybuilding and a successful entrepreneur before he even starred in a movie, Ahhhhnold broke out with Conan the Barbarian and became a superstar with The Terminator (above) — not the biggest movie of 1984, the year it was released, but a massive VHS hit the year after. He then continued as one of the biggest (and strongest) stars of the 1980s with hits like Commando , The Running Man , and Predator .

His '90s were even bigger: He starred in Terminator 2: Judgment Day and True Lies, among other hits. In the next decade, And the next decade, he got elected governor of California and earned pretty high marks.

Last year he told his life story for the captivating Netflix docuseries Arnold and released the inspirational book Be Useful: Seven Tools for Life .

<p>Arnold’s old rival KO’d the 80s box office with both the Rocky and Rambo franchises, calling his own shots and doing a lot of painting on the side. He eventually buddied up to Schwarzenegger behind the Planet Hollywood franchise, and brought new life to Rocky with his role in the Creed franchise.</p> <p>This year he’s back with yet another franchise, <em>The Expendables 4</em>, and he stars in the endearing <em>Tulsa King.</em> He’s such an icon that the new <em>Barbie</em> movie makes fun of that period when he embraced his place as one of the biggest stars of the 1980s by wearing a lot of fur.</p>

Sylvester Stallone

Sly was chronically underestimated, and has never stopped punching: Let's not forget that he didn't just star in Rocky — he wrote it, thereby creating one of the most beloved screen underdogs.

Arnold's old rival KO'd the 80s box office with both the Rocky and Rambo franchises, calling his own shots and doing a lot of painting on the side. He was cool in Cobra (above), too. He eventually joined forces with his Austrian-born rival for the Planet Hollywood franchise, and brought new life to Rocky with his role in the Creed franchise.

Last year he returned to yet another franchise, The Expendables 4 , and he starred in the soon-to-return series Tulsa King. He's such an icon that Barbie made fun of that period in the 1980s when he was known for wearing a lot of fur. And he's the focus of the recent Netflix documentary Sly .

<p>Eddie Murphy returns this summer to the Beverly Hills Cop franchise for Netflix, but still looks young because he <em>started</em> so young. Maybe the flat-out funniest actor of all time, Murphy was still in his teens when he joined <em>Saturday Night Live</em>, and basically saved the show after the departure of the original cast.</p> <p>He went on to a a phenomenal film career that stared with <em>48 Hrs. </em>(above), and continued with <em>Trading Places</em>, the <em>Beverly Hills Cop </em>movies and <em>Coming to America</em>. </p> <p>He can still score massive laughs, as you know if you saw 2019's <em>Dolemite Is My Name</em>, and was charming in the Christmas movie <em>Candy Kane Lane</em>. </p>

Eddie Murphy

Eddie Murphy returns this summer to the Beverly Hills Cop franchise for Netflix, but still looks young because he started so young. Maybe the flat-out funniest actor of all time, Murphy was still in his teens when he joined Saturday Night Live , and basically saved the show after the departure of the original cast.

He went on to a a phenomenal film career that stared with 48 Hrs. (above), and continued with Trading Places , the Beverly Hills Cop movies and Coming to America .

Harrison Ford

Harrison Ford has carried as many blockbusters as anyone, but always does it with understated cool. After kicking off the '80s with The Empire Strikes Back , Raiders of the Lost Ark , and Blade Runner , he earned critical acclaim for the drama Witness and the romantic comedy Working Girl , proving himself as a leading man who can do pretty much anything.

In 2023 year he not only starred in the fifth and final Indiana Jones film, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny , but also on the Yellowstone spinoff 1923. And he's joining the Marvel universe in the next Captain America sequel.

That's him above with Kate Capshaw in the underrated Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom , one of our must-see movies of 1984.

<p>Streep is widely considered the greatest actress of all time, and it's easy to see why. She won the second of her three Best Actress Oscars for <em>Sophie's Choice</em> in 1983, years after breaking out in 1978's <em>The Deer Hunter</em>, which she followed with 1979's <em>Kramer vs. Kramer</em> (for which she won her first Oscar). </p> <p>Her chameleonic '80s run saw her bouncing from <em>Out of Africa</em> to <em>Ironweed </em>to <em>Heartburn</em> (above)to <em>She-Devil</em>. </p> <p>After comical work as a heartless president of the United States in 2021's <em>Don't Look Up</em>, she turned to streaming in the Amazon series <em>Extrapolations</em> and Hulu's <em>Only Murders in the Building</em>, with the next star on our list. Oh, and did we mention she's good at accents?</p>

Meryl Streep

Streep is widely considered the greatest actress of all time, and it's easy to see why. She won the second of her three Best Actress Oscars for Sophie's Choice in 1983, years after breaking out in 1978's The Deer Hunter , which she followed with 1979's Kramer vs. Kramer (for which she won her first Oscar).

Her chameleonic '80s run saw her bouncing from Out of Africa to Ironweed to Heartburn (above)to She-Devil .

After comical work as a heartless president of the United States in 2021's Don't Look Up , she turned to streaming in the Amazon series Extrapolations and Hulu's Only Murders in the Building , with the next star on our list. Oh, and did we mention she's good at accents?

<p>After years of struggle, Steve Martin scored a <em>Saturday Night Live</em> hosting gig in October 1976 that finally won mass audiences over to his absurdist comedy. From there he packed arenas and made his first film, 1979’s <em>The Jerk</em> (above), a huge hit despite many critics’ failure to recognize its brilliance.</p> <p>He struggled a while for another hit as <em>Pennies From Heaven</em>, <em>The Man With Two Brains</em> and <em>All of Me</em> were box office disappointments, but then he went on a run of hits that continues to this day, including<em> Three Amigos</em> (1986), <em>Roxanne</em> and <em>Planes, Trains and Automobiles</em> (both 1987), <em>Dirty Rotten Scoundrels</em> (1988), <em>Parenthood</em> (1989),<em> Bowfinger</em> (1999) the Father of the Bride films, the Pink Panther films, and <em>It’s Complicated</em> (2009). </p> <p>Now 77, he’s now starring with his <em>Three Amigos</em> pal Martin Short on Hulu’s <em>Only Murders in the Building.</em> </p>

Steve Martin

It's hard to believe it, but Steve Martin had some lean years as a writer, offbeat standup and banjo player before his explosive popularity following a Saturday Night Live hosting gig in October 1976. From there he packed arenas and made his first film, 1979's The Jerk , a huge hit despite many critics' failure to recognize its brilliance.

He struggled a while for another film hit as Pennies From Heaven , The Man With Two Brains and All of Me were box office disappointments, but then he hit a groove that still continues. His '80s run included Three Amigos (1986), Roxanne (pictured) and Planes, Trains and Automobiles (both 1987), Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (1988), and Parenthood (1989), and since then he's starred in Bowfinger (1999) the Father of the Bride films, the Pink Panther films, and It's Complicated (2009).

Now 78, he's doing some of the funniest work of his career in Only Murders in the Building opposite his old Three Amigos pal Martin Short.

<p>These stars of the 1980s are still, like, totally rad.</p> <p>The post <a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.moviemaker.com/stars-of-the-1980s/">13 Stars of the 1980s Who Are Still Going Strong</a> appeared first on <a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.moviemaker.com">MovieMaker Magazine</a>.</p>

Jodie Foster

The two-time Best Actress Oscar winner for 1988's The Accused and 1991's The Silence of the Lambs is fresh off another Oscar nomination for her latest film, Nyad, and just finished the latest season of True Detective: Night Country , for which she received near-unanimous praise.

Jodie Foster broke into show business with a Coppertone ad at age three in the mid-1960s, then proved herself a young master of her craft when she starred in both Freaky Friday and Taxi Driver in 1976, when she was barely a teenager.

After conquering acting, she became a director known for films including Little Man Tate and Money Monster , as well as one of the most provocative episodes of Black Mirror . She has nothing to prove but keeps going strong.

Jennifer Jason Leigh

Jennifer Jason Leigh broke through as Stacy in Fast Times at Ridgemont High , a film that made Roger Ebert wonder, "Don't they know they have a star on their hands?" given her empathetic handling of a complex character in crisis.

Leigh proved herself one of the most versatile film actors in movies ranging from Last Exit to Brooklyn to Backdraft to Single White Female to Dorothy Parker and the Vicious Circle to The Anniversary Party , which she co-wrote, co-directed, co-produced and acted in. She was stood out in Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight .

She devoured the scenery in the latest season of Fargo , and was by far the highlight of the show, her old-time transatlantic accent standing out from all the Minnesota and North Dakota accents around her. She's a star of the 1980s who still impresses us as much as ever.

Meanwhile, her Fast Times co-star Phoebe Cates (right), is a great example of a star who quit acting on their own terms.

The new Top Gun: Maverick includes a tribute in the end credits to Tony Scott, the director of the original Top Gun, who died in 2012. But studio executives didn’t always feel so warmly about the director: Scott once recounted for a Top Gun DVD commentary that he was fired three times from the 1986 film. We’re revisiting […]

Speaking of actors with nothing to prove, will someone tell Tom Cruise he can stop doing his own stunts? It wouldn't matter — he wouldn't listen. The ageless dynamo is still flying planes and jumping off cliffs on motorcycles in his 60s.

Breaking out in the '80s with films like All the Right Moves and Risky Business , then becoming a superstar with Top Gun , he matured into dramatic roles like Born on the Fourth of July and A Few Good Men , while also knocking out classics like Jerry Maguire and Eyes Wide Shut .

Amazingly, he had his biggest success to date with 2022's Top Gun: Maverick , in which he co-starred with Jennifer Connelly — another star of the 1980s who is still going strong. And he's still going strong this summer with the Mission Impossible franchise.

That's him with Kelly McGillis in 1986's Top Gun , above.

Emily Williams announced as ‘Rachel Marron’ in The Bodyguard

July 27, 2023 Last updated: July 27, 2023 12:54 pm By Admin

Producers, Michael Harrison and David Ian are delighted to announce that multi-platinum Australian recording artist Emily Williams will star as Rachel Marron in the award-winning international smash hit musical THE BODYGUARD, from Tuesday 12 September 2023 at the Liverpool Empire .

Emily Williams

Emily Williams returns to the role of Rachel Marron, having previously starred in the 2017 Australian production, which marked her theatrical debut. Emily rose to fame on Australian Idol, becoming the runner-up of the competition. Following this, she found commercial success as a member of the Australian girl group Young Divas before going solo gaining numerous ‘Favourite Australian Female Artist’ nominations.

Emily will join Emmerdale and Hollyoaks star Ayden Callaghan as Frank Farmer, with Emily-Mae as Nicki Marron, John Macaulay as Bill Devaney, Graham Elwell as Tony, James Groom as Sy Spector, Marios Nicolaides as Stalker and Phil Atkinson as Ray Court. The role of Fletcher will be shared by Ryo Appadu, Kaylen Luke, Manasseh Mapira and Sam Stephens.

The cast is completed by Alexandros Beshonges, Kayne Gordon, Jack Hardwick, James-Lee Harris, Kalisha Johnson, Samantha Mbolekwa, Liam Morris, Abbie Quinnen, Charlotte Scally, Yiota Theo and Marco Venturini.

Ayden Callaghan is best known for his roles as Miles De Souza in Emmerdale and fan favourite Joe Roscoe in Hollyoaks. Additional television credits include Doctors, Eastenders, Bad Education, Casualty and The Bill. His stage credits include the roles of Dr Treves in The Elephant Man at The Trafalgar Studios, Malcolm in Alan Ayckbourn’s Bedroom Farce on UK Tour, directed by Peter Hall, and Dean Snaith in Ayckbourn’s If I Were You on UK Tour.

Emily-Mae’s theatre credits include Disney’s Frozen and City of Angels both in the West End, Are You as Nervous as I Am? and Brooklyn the Musical at Greenwich Theatre, the National Tour of Paul Kerryson’s Hairspray, Little Shop of Horrors at Storyhouse, Chester and The Producers at the Royal Exchange.

Former Secret Service agent turned bodyguard, Frank Farmer, is hired to protect superstar Rachel Marron from an unknown stalker. Each expects to be in charge; what they don’t expect is to fall in love. A romantic thriller, THE BODYGUARD features a host of irresistible classics including Queen of the Night, So Emotional, One Moment in Time, Saving All My Love, Run to You, I Have Nothing, I Wanna Dance with Somebody and one of the biggest hit songs of all time – I Will Always Love You.

Based on Lawrence Kasdan’s 1992 Oscar-nominated Warner Bros. movie starring Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner, THE BODYGUARD, directed by Thea Sharrock with book by Oscar-winning Alex Dinelaris, had its world premiere at the Adelphi Theatre in London’s West End and was nominated for four Olivier Awards. A sell-out 18-month UK and Ireland tour followed, before the show returned to the West End at the Dominion Theatre ahead of a second sell-out tour of the UK and Ireland in 2018/19. To date, THE BODYGUARD has played to over 3.6 million people in 15 countries and 45 US cities. Countries include the Netherlands, Germany, South Korea, China, Canada, Italy, Australia, Spain, France, the US, Austria and Japan.

Beyoncé Surpasses 100 Career Hot 100 Hits, Thanks to ‘Cowboy Carter’

Beyoncé has a massive week on Billboard ’s charts, thanks to her latest LP, Cowboy Carter. Along with charting 23 songs from the album on the Billboard Hot 100 (dated April 13), she ups her career total from 85 entries to 106. As such, she becomes the 17th artist, and only the third woman, to have logged 100 or more titles since the chart began in 1958.

Cowboy Carter debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 (and the Top Country Albums and Americana/Folk Albums charts) with 407,000 equivalent album units earned in the United States in the March 29-April 4 tracking week, according to Luminate – the biggest one-week total of 2024. She also becomes the first Black woman to lead Top Country Albums.

Here’s a look at all 23 of Beyoncé’s entries on the latest Hot 100, all of which are debuts except where noted. (The 27-track Cowboy Carter also includes four mostly spoken-word interludes.)

No. 2, “Texas Hold ‘Em” (up from No. 11; peaked at No. 1 for two weeks) No. 6, “II Most Wanted,” with Miley Cyrus No. 7, “Jolene” No. 16, “Levii’s Jeans,” with Post Malone No. 26, “Bodyguard” No. 27, “Blackbiird,” with Tanner Adell, Brittney Spencer, Tiera Kennedy & Reyna Roberts No. 30, “Ameriican Requiem” No. 31, “Spaghettii,” with Linda Martell & Shaboozey No. 37, “Daughter” No. 38, “16 Carriages” (re-entry; returns to its peak) No. 39, “Ya Ya” No. 42, “Protector,” with Rumi Carter No. 44, “Tyrant,” with Dolly Parton No. 51, “Riiverdance” No. 52, “Alliigator Tears” No. 54, “My Rose” No. 59, “Just for Fun,” with Willie Jones No. 60, “II Hands II Heaven” No. 61, “Sweet * Honey * Buckiin’ ” with Shaboozey No. 63, “Flamenco” No. 65, “Desert Eagle” No. 70, “Oh Louisiana” No. 87, “Amen”

Beyoncé’s 106 career Hot 100 hits are the 13th-most overall and the third-most among women, after only Taylor Swift (232) and Nicki Minaj (148). (She charted 14 additional hits as a member of Destiny’s Child in 1997-2005, and five as half of The Carters in 2018.)

Here’s a look at all 17 artists in the 100 Hot 100 Hits club :

329, Drake 232, Taylor Swift 207, Glee Cast 186, Lil Wayne 185, Future 157, Kanye West 148, Nicki Minaj 138, Lil Baby 117, Chris Brown 115, Travis Scott 109, Elvis Presley (whose career start predated the Hot 100’s inception) 108, Lil Uzi Vert 106, Beyoncé 105, Justin Bieber 105, Jay-Z 104, YoungBoy Never Broke Again 103, 21 Savage

Notably, Beyoncé (106) surpasses the total Hot 100 hits of her husband, Jay-Z (105). They have harmoniously charted three songs together, led by her first entry, “‘03 Bonnie & Clyde” (billed as by Jay-Z featuring Beyoncé Knowles), which hit No. 4 in December 2002.

Of Beyoncé’s 106 career Hot 100 hits, 61 have reached the top 40; 24 have hit the top 10; and nine have gone to No. 1.

Thanks to their guest appearances on Cowboy Carter, eight artists earn their first Hot 100 entries: Tanner Adell, Willie Jones, Tiera Kennedy, Linda Martell, Reyna Roberts, Shaboozey, Brittney Spencer and Beyoncé’s daughter Rumi Carter. At six years old, Rumi is now the youngest-charting female artist in Hot 100 history. She breaks the record previously held by her sister, Blue Ivy Carter, who was seven when she debuted as featured on Beyoncé, SAINt JHN and Wizkid’s No. 76-peaking “Brown Skin Girl” in 2019.

Canadians are streaming their homegrown musicians. According to a new report, of the 1,000 most-streamed artists in Canada, 113 are Canadian.

Laying a Foundation for Success , published by Music Canada — the association representing major music labels in Canada — takes a look at Canadian streaming data to determine whether Canadian artists are getting heard. Studying the 10,000 most popular artists Canada in 2022, economist Will Page finds that 889 were Canadian. Of the 10,000 most popular songs, 1013 were Canadian.

At the upper echelons of popularity, the trend holds: roughly ten percent of the thousand most-streamed artists and songs were Canadian. Canadian artists like Tate McRae and Charlotte Cardin outranked popular American stars like Selena Gomez on that list. Other Canadians amongst the 1000 most-streamed artists include country singer Josh Ross, Punjabi-Canadian artist Karan Aujla, pianist Alexandra Stréliski and singer Lauren Spencer Smith.

Of the 889 Canadian artists amongst the top ten thousand, roughly 75% perform in English, while 20% perform in French. Page notes that the third most-popular language segment is Punjabi music, which is also the fastest-growing music language in the country , and accounts for 3% of the 889 musicians.

On the global stage, Canadian artists also rank third, behind the U.S. and the U.K., in worldwide streams of the thousand most-popular songs.

“In a world where fans can listen to any artist, from any country in the world, and with nearly every recorded song at their fingertips, listeners are choosing Canadian music," says Music Canada CEO Patrick Rogers.

Andrew Cash, President of Canadian Independent Music Association (CIMA), points to the Canadian funding organizations that make streaming numbers like this possible.

"In many ways, this is a real testament to the work that FACTOR and Musicaction and Starmaker have done to invest in Canadian talent at the beginning, and to work with companies and artists along the way," Cash tells Billboard Canada .

For economist Will Page, who previously worked at Spotify, this data demonstrates the strength of Canada's music industry in the streaming economy.

"The Canadian recorded music industry is by any honest reckoning a case study in streaming success," Page writes.

Recorded music revenues in Canada have doubled since 2014, when Spotify launched, and are now as high as they were before the launch of iTunes in 2004. Page notes that according to consultancy MIDIA, Canadian recorded music revenues could soon hit a billion dollars for the first time.

Though streaming revenues may be growing, many artists are critical of streaming services' royalty models. Spotify's new royalty share structure has de-monetized tracks with fewer than a thousand plays per year, leaving many smaller and emerging artists out of the royalty share pool.

In the report, Page argues that the problem is not with the royalty models but with the increase in the number of musicians and "mouths to feed."

Getting Canadian Artists Out to the World

It's a pivotal time for music streaming in Canada, and Music Canada's report has some suggestions on how this data could be used for regulating streaming services.

The government is preparing to implement Bill C-11 , the Online Streaming Act, which became law last year. As the CRTC undertakes consultations around how to best apply the new amendments to the Broadcasting Act — the first round of hearings wrapped up in December — Page's report lays out three possible policy approaches.

The first is to do nothing, and to let the services continue to operate essentially unregulated.

The second approach, which Page refers to as "Mandate, Don't Dictate," would entail moderate government interventions that benefit Canadian artists and rights-holders. Page outlines potential interventions such as requirements that Canadian artists be indexed highly on playlists, or that streaming services pay into the Canadian music industry in the same way as radio broadcasters, which are mandated to contribute to FACTOR and Musicaction, funding bodies that support Canadian artists.

The third approach considered is a more involved form of regulation that imposes clearer quotas (similar to CanCon regulations on radio) on streaming platforms.

Andrew Cash says that CIMA is most interested in the second approach, specifically ensuring that streaming services will contribute financially to the sector, similarly to radio broadcasters.

"What we're trying to do is build sustainable careers over time," he says. "The best way for Canadians to hear Canadian music is to have competitive companies that can duke it out with other companies on the global stage, supporting excellent artists that can also compete with the best of everyone else." The way to achieve this, Cash emphasizes, is through investment in Canadian talent and companies.

The report stops short of recommending a particular strategy — though, from the short amount of space it receives, it seems clear Page doesn't support the most regulated third approach — but he emphasizes that the government should consider the need to support exporting Canadian music globally.

For every one stream within Canada, he writes, Canadian artists are getting roughly ten abroad, and any government music strategy should focus on helping Canadian music thrive on the international stage. Cash says that's an industry-wide priority.

As Music Canada's Rogers puts it, "Our regulatory framework should build on streaming’s ability to connect Canadian and Indigenous artists with fans at home and abroad."

Karl Lagerfeld was a mega-collector. Of high-collared white shirts (1,000). Of books (300,000). Of period decor (art deco, Memphis Group, 18th-century European). And of homes – at least 20, in Europe and in New York.

“He loved buying, redesigning and decorating houses,” said Sebastien Jondeau, the longtime assistant and bodyguard of the fashion designer, who died in 2019 at age 85.

“It was a true passion.”

One of those homes, the Bond-villain-like lair on the Quai Voltaire in Paris that was Lagerfeld’s last residence – recently sold at auction at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Paris for €10mil (approximately RM51.5mil).

More than 50 attendees gathered for the sale of the 2,800-square-foot apartment, which Lagerfeld shared with Choupette, his beloved blue-eyed Birman cat.

Bidding began shortly after 10am at €5.3mil (RM27.3mil), and quickly turned into a standoff between two parties: one who was off-site and communicating through an auction official in the room via a landline telephone, the other who was represented by a French lawyer seated in the second row and taking instruction on his cellphone.

The lawyer, who would not give his name for reasons of confidentiality, appeared to be taking direction in English from his client via a telephone earpiece.

Offers bounced between the two bidders by increments of 50,000 to 150,000 euros (RM258,000-RM772,000) for nearly 20 minutes, until the lawyer’s bid jumped from €9.3mil (RM47.8mil) to €10mil (RM51.5mil).

The auction official on the landline with the telephone bidder made a hand motion that her bidder stood down.

When the auctioneer, Bertrand Savoure, announced that the apartment had been sold, attendees erupted in applause. Savoure would not reveal the buyer’s name or nationality.

Proceeds of the sale go to Lagerfeld’s estate, which will be distributed to Lagerfeld’s seven heirs.

These include former model Baptiste Giabiconi, who will receive 30%; Jondeau and former model Brad Kroenig (the father of Lagerfeld’s godson, Hudson) will each receive 20%; and Chanel artistic director Virginie Viard, Lagerfeld’s creative muse Amanda Harlech and Karl Lagerfeld brand executives Caroline Lebar and Sophie De Langlade, who will split the remaining 30%, according to the French weekly magazine Le Point .

The auction comes at a time of renewed interest in Lagerfeld.

Paradise Now: The Extraordinary Life Of Karl Lagerfeld , a dishy biography by William Middleton, a former Paris bureau chief of Women’s Wear Daily , was published in the US last year, and is being adapted by Paramount as a feature documentary, produced by Graydon Carter.

In June, Disney+ will stream Becoming Karl Lagerfeld , a six-episode biographical series based on the book Kaiser Karl by French journalist Raphaelle Bacque.

And Thames & Hudson recently released Karl Lagerfeld: A Life In Houses ,” a large-format art book by Patrick Mauries and Marie Kalt, the former editor of Architectural Digest France , that details 13 of Lagerfeld’s properties.

A photograph taken in Paris on March 7, 2024, shows part of the futuristic 260m2 three-room apartment with a 50m2 dressing room. Photo: AFP

“Every place had its own spirit,” the authors write in the introduction. Lagerfeld’s real estate “reveals his character more fully than any biography”.

Especially the Quai Voltaire flat. Lagerfeld found the eight-room apartment, which is on the third floor of a 17th-century building and overlooks the Seine and the Tuileries, 20 years ago while reading Maison & Demeure magazine.

“When he bought the apartment, he said, ‘Maybe I’ll do a bit of work on it,’” Jondeau recalled.

“Then he spent three or four years redoing everything.”

Lagerfeld had walls torn down, elaborate moldings ripped out and a mix of gray-tinted concrete and resin poured on the oak parquet.

The sole remnant of the building’s historic decor was the frescoed ceiling of a chapel, which he had concealed by a drop ceiling.

He reconfigured the layout into a grand living room facing the river, a bedroom-bathroom suite, a 550-square-foot wardrobe, a small laundry room and a butler’s pantry, where he stored his Diet Coke.

No cooking was allowed in the apartment, as Lagerfeld abhorred the aroma of food in living spaces. He took his meals at another apartment he owned around the corner, on the Rue Des Saints-Peres.

He framed the main room with bookcases encased by milky-white glass doors.

The windows were similarly treated but with one-way white glass that allowed Lagerfeld to take in the view while keeping tour boat spotlights, and telephoto lenses, out.

Lagerfeld furnished the flat with early 21st-century design, much of it from the Galerie Kreo, a contemporary decor retailer in Paris.

There was a bulbous chrome chair by Marc Newson, a pair of clear glass reclining chairs and a matching boxlike coffee table by Konstantin Grcic and a lacquered metal and Corian shelf unit by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec.

All was in black, white, silver or gray. The lighting was a spooky blue that cast no shadows.

“There is no colour here, because I am constantly surrounded by colour,” he told Architectural Digest France in 2012. “I prefer to live in a neutral environment.”

The furnishings were sold by Sotheby’s in Monaco in 2021.

Lagerfeld’s life in the apartment was meticulous and regimented. One table was for drawing, another for writing checks, a third small desk for correspondence.

“There was a little sofa where he only sat to read magazines,” Jondeau said.

There was no art on the walls, save a Takashi Murakami screen print portrait of Lagerfeld. He rarely received visitors.

“I never went there,” said Clemence Krzentowski, a co-founder of Galerie Kreo. “He would send me photos when the furniture we delivered was all in and say that Choupette ‘loved everything’.”

“The Quai Voltaire flat for Karl was the same as Coco Chanel when she lived at the Ritz: very intimate, his luxury hideaway,” Jondeau said.

“I hope it lands in good hands.” – The New York Times
