m62 travel

The M62 motorway is a major eastwest transportation route through Northern England, connecting Liverpool, Manchester and Hull. It starts at the junction of the M60 and the M62 near Manchester, and terminates at Clifton, near Brighouse in West Yorkshire. It was built between 1964 and 1976.

Safety on the M62 has historically been a concern, with the road having a higher than average number of fatalities and serious injuries. In 2004, the Highways Agency set up a safety scheme on the M62 known as Operation Edgeware, which resulted in a reduction of fatalities and serious injury accidents by around 50%.

In recent years the M62 has seen several improvements in safety, including the introduction of dedicated hard shoulder running systems and an Automated Incident Detection System. In the 2016/17 financial year statistics indicate that the road saw a total of 408 accidents resulting in personal injury, of which 43 resulted in fatalities.

Information: Very heavy congestion on M62 Eastbound at Junction 20 due to workforce on the road. Down to one lane out of four. Best to turn off and look for an alternative route.

WITHOUT a doubt. the people who the overhead gantry signs in the greater Manchester are the most incompetent lot of articles i have ever come across. Take W/E 15 17 OCT. I tried to get home from A627M from the ROYTON ROUNDABOUT. about midnight on 15/10/2021. i found the whole roundabout down to one lane the slip road entrance to the A627M was blocked off . AS USUAL no warnings of any sort of the SIGNS on THE MOTORWAY M62 EAST or anywhere else. LAST FRIDAY 22/2021 IT GOT WORST driving from J17 WHITEFIELD TO J20 EAST i went of the M62 to the roundabout expecting to travel along the A 627M TO OLDHAM i found the entrance to the A627M OLDHAM was blocked off. not one warning sign on the M60 OR M62 EAST. it got worse on my way home from ROYTON i found the entrance to the A627M TOWARDS J20 WEST blocked off. it was about midnight. So PICKED UP THE M62 WEST AT HEYWOOD. on my way home to J17 at WHITEFIELD. guest what J17 SLIP ROAD WAS CLOSED. not one warning sign was lit up i was trying to get home to WHITEFIELD. The people of PRESTWITCH AND WHITEFIELD has suffer 6 years of misery while these motorways were turned into smart motorways. it is still going on. some of it was caused by the people giving out the info of the motorway closures . they caused chaos with misleading information caused accidents when they put out warning signs -motorways closed when they were open. motorways open A ND when motorways open when they were closed. Take J17 M60 EAST/WEST it has been the most shut down than any other part of the whole motorway system most cases no warning signs on these clever brightly lit matrix information. EVEN now i travel the M60/M62 EAST WEST and what do i see. warnings signs lit up telling people of roadworks ahead on M1 M6 hundreds of miles away from my area when they can not even tell us what is happening in the local area. a few weeks ago i went east from J17 TO J20 about 9pm as i past J18 the overhead gantries were lit up warning drivers to slow down, as there were 3 lanes closed it showed 3 lanes with red crosses on eveybody slowed down. a queue formed. A couple of miles down the road the 3 lanes were never shut down. The bloody warning signs had been left on from an earlier incident do you see what i am getting at ANYHOW whose bothered hundreds of millions of pounds has been spent on these motorways. it is only taxpayers money no one regulates how it is spent. if these things keep happening it does not matter there is plenty more money where thay comes from/

Snow disruption: M62 drivers stranded due to blizzard conditions

  • Published 10 March 2023

Traffic on M62

Drivers were stuck on the M62 motorway across the Pennines overnight due to blizzard conditions.

Several motorists reported getting into difficulties on the key route for about six hours, with congestion stretching to 17 miles at its height.

National Highways said people had got stuck despite gritting having been carried out since Thursday afternoon.

Emma Hamilton, 28, who was caught on the M62 through the night, said drivers were "left to it to direct ourselves".

Describing the scene, Ms Hamilton said there were "lorries broken down all over the road across all lanes" and drivers were "having to work out themselves how to go round them".

"I'm just tired and upset at the lack of any direction from authorities," she added.

Meanwhile, Simon Peach, chief football writer for the PA news agency, got stuck on the motorway after covering Manchester United's Europa League match at Old Trafford on Thursday night.

He said he had "moved about 25 miles over the course of the night and the first 15 miles or so were clear, so I've been at a standstill for a really long time.

"I've never had to drive through anything like this before."

Dave Wilson, from National Highways, said: "Despite our best efforts throughout [Thursday] afternoon to prepare the M62 for the snow, gritting itself does not stop snow lying on the carriageway.

"It needs traffic to drive over it to grind the grit into the carriageway, unfortunately that traffic then lost traction and became stuck.

"That in turn then creates the queue of traffic behind which our gritters can't get through to clear any specific areas."

M62 delays

Around 33,000 customers lost power across the Yorkshire and Humber region due to the weather, according to National Powergrid, with the major impact felt across West and South Yorkshire.

The electricity distributor said on Friday afternoon it was "pushing to restore power to 3,000 customers still affected by the snow and ice".

Meanwhile, the weather forced the closure of more than 1,000 schools across Yorkshire.

Car covered in snow

On the trains, Network Rail said fallen trees had blocked lines between Manchester and Sheffield, meaning no services could run.

Train operators TransPennine Express and Northern were also among those affected by the severe weather, with many services cancelled.

The A57 Snake Pass between Manchester and Sheffield remains closed, though the A628 Woodhead Pass to the north has reopened.

Snow drifts in North Yorkshire

First Bus was also forced to suspend all its services across South Yorkshire early on Friday.

"Unfortunately due to the significant snowfall our region has experienced we are unable to operate any services safely," a spokesperson said.

Children in deep snow

Other weather-related disruption on Friday included:

  • Flights delayed at Leeds Bradford Airport, with three departures cancelled
  • Sheffield's criminal courts not sitting due to the weather
  • The RAC received calls from drivers stuck in the snow - particularly around Sheffield, Leeds, Bradford and Hull

A widespread "yellow" weather warning for ice runs until 10:00 GMT on Saturday.

It warned of injuries from slips and falls and icy patches on untreated roads and pavements.

Crashed car

The Met Office recorded an official snow depth of 14cm in Bingley, West Yorkshire, but higher unofficial measurements have been recorded in Leeds and Sheffield.

Speaking late on Thursday, North Yorkshire Police told drivers to "avoid travelling if possible" and said it had received reports of stranded vehicles in Harrogate and Scarborough.

At the A170 Sutton Bank hill in the North York Moors National Park, a traffic camera appeared to show a crashed car in treacherous conditions late on Thursday.

The heavy snowfall also hit the filming of ITV soap Emmerdale, which had to be cancelled on Friday.

The drama, which is based in West Yorkshire, is currently filmed on a purpose-built set on the Harewood Estate, near Leeds.

Actor Nick Miles, who plays Jimmy King in Emmerdale, wrote on Twitter: "Look out Leeds. We're all going sledging!"

HELP! Please sign our petition to reinstate the live CCTV traffic camera feeds for the M62

As most of you will have already seen, back in December, National Highways, the government body who control and operate the CCTV cameras on the M62 (and the rest of England) restricted access to their feeds, freezing the images on that date and not allowing third parties like us to give you the access to the latest traffic images you previously enjoyed.

We've been working hard to get this access restored but have unfortunately met with nothing but bureaucratic red tape and a response of "no, because we said so" from National Highways.

Road users in Scotland and Wales don't have this problem; their government bodies put the needs of the public first and have created ways for third-party providers to build fast, helpful services, now used by thousands of UK motorists daily.

The more people that sign, the quicker this can be resolved, so please share!

We have been told by National Highways that the camera feeds for the M62 will be reinstated shortly.

If the images are not updating, please check back later.

Enter a custom name for this camera if required, then click the route you wish to save it to.

Enter a custom name for this Bookmark, or just click save to keep it as it is.

Are you sure you wish to remove this camera from ALL routes? If you only wish to remove this camera from a specific route please Cancel, go to the Route in question and remove it from there.

Long queues on M62 and traffic chaos at rush hour after stranded vehicle

THERE are long queues headed eastbound on the M62 this afternoon, Tuesday, after a stranded vehicle has caused chaos on the motorway approaching rush hour.

A stranded vehicle has caused two lanes of the busy motorway in Warrington to be closed, leading to 20 minutes of delays.

According to traffic monitoring system INRIX, this is due to a broken-down vehicle stuck between Junction 11, Birchwood, and Junction 12, Eccles Interchange.

Messages on the motorway warn of queuing, with Traffic England predicting of a more temperate 15 minutes of delays.

Traffic is expected to resume to normal conditions by rush hour, however this is subject to change.

Double killer who mutilated Huddersfield couple will never go free

  • Published 4 days ago

Marcus Osborne

A man who killed his ex-partner and her new love interest out of "sexual jealousy" will spend the rest of his life in jail.

Marcus Osborne, 35, inflicted 99 wounds on Katie Higton and mutilated Steven Harnett's body at the house he used to share with Ms Higton in Huddersfield.

He also raped another woman and showed the couple's lifeless bodies to a neighbour after the May 2023 attack.

Osborne was handed a rare whole-life prison term at Leeds Crown Court.

Outside court, Mr Harnett's twin Jordan said West Yorkshire Police had "failed" his brother and Ms Higton.

In a statement, he said: "The core duty of the police is to prevent crime, so how is a man with a history of domestic violence allowed to walk freely from a police station just a couple of days prior to him murdering my brother and his girlfriend?"

Ms Higton told West Yorkshire Police she feared Osborne would "seriously hurt or kill" her four days before she was murdered.

Osborne had previous convictions for violent offences against two previous partners, in 2011 and 2012.

Ms Higton told police that Osborne had warned that if she got another boyfriend, "he will kill us both".

West Yorkshire Police said "thorough reviews of the offences are being carried out".

Presiding judge Mrs Justice Lambert said the motivation for both killings was "sexual in nature".

"Both were driven by your sexual jealousy," she told Osborne.

"You killed Katie and Steven because you believed they had started seeing each other and their relationship was an intimate one."

Steven Harnett and Katie Higton

The court heard Osborne found out about 27-year-old Ms Higton's relationship after hacking her Snapchat account.

He forced his way into the house, at Harpe Inge in Dalton, on 15 May 2023 armed with a knife and laid in wait for Ms Higton's return from a cinema date with Mr Harnett, 25.

As soon as she stepped through the door she was brutally attacked.

Ms Higton sustained 99 injuries in the assault.

Osborne cut her face 26 times in an effort to disfigure as well as kill her, the court was told.

Prosecutor Jonathan Sandiford KC said she was "effectively defenceless, although she put up a courageous struggle".

Osborne used Ms Higton's phone and pretended to be her to lure Mr Harnett to the house, where he was keeping another woman captive.

He then mutilated and murdered Mr Harnett, who was left with 24 knife wounds in an attack Mr Sandiford described as "sadistic".

The woman kept captive in the house told police that Osborne moved the bodies so they were side by side before remaining in the house for several hours.

He then raped the woman at knifepoint.

Marcus Osborne: Moment double killer is arrested by police

Judge Lambert said Osborne invited a neighbour in to show them the bodies, apparently "proud" of the murders, before fleeing the scene.

He later handed himself in to police.

"Your primary reason for killing them both was because Katie started a relationship with another man," Mrs Justice Lambert told Osborne as he was sentenced.

"You were pathologically jealous of that relationship.

"I am sure you also engaged in sexual activity when Katie was either dead or dying."

There were cries and shouts as Osborne, who had previously admitted two counts of murder, false imprisonment and rape, was taken out of the dock to begin his whole-life sentence.

Judge Lambert said she was "wholly satisfied" sending him to prison for the rest of his life was an appropriate punishment and told him: "What you did that night was horrific."

Orders which prohibit a prisoner's release are the most severe punishment available and are reserved for those who commit the most heinous crimes.

Killer nurse Lucy Letby, Thomas Mair who shot and stabbed MP Jo Cox and Damien Bendall, who killed four people including three children in Derbyshire, are others who have been told they will die in prison.

As of December 2023, 67 of the UK's 87,000 prisoners were serving a whole-life sentence, a Ministry of Justice spokesperson confirmed.

Ms Higton's family outside court

Det Supt Alan Weekes, who led the investigation, said it was "hard to understand the behaviour of anyone who acted as Osborne did".

He added that Osborne's "absolutely brutal offences" were among the worst he and other "experienced homicide detectives" had come across.

"His behaviour can only be described as truly monstrous."

Children were also in the house during the murders, the court heard.

In a statement, Ms Higton's family said they would "miss her laughter, her fun and jokes".

"We will never again have the joy of loving messages from her at special times or of precious moments with her," they added.

'Harrowing'

Pauline Mccullagh, from the Crown Prosecution Service, said it was a "harrowing case which has left a lasting mark on our community".

She added: "The sadistic way in which Katie and Steven Harnett were killed showed the depths of Osborne's cruelty, and his subsequent boasts about the murders left no doubt that he felt any remorse."Obsorne denied his victims the smallest mercies in their final moments."

As well as his whole-life order, Osborne was sentenced to 10 years for the rape of the woman he held captive, who cannot be named for legal reasons.

He was also sentenced to 10 years for false imprisonment, with both sentences to run concurrently.

It was built from 1475–1479 by an Italian architect and has served as a wedding and coronation place for great princes, tsars, and emperors of Russia. Church services are given in the Kremlin’s numerous cathedrals on a regular basis.

The Grand Kremlin Palace was the former Tsar’s Moscow residence and today it serves as the official workplace of the President of the Russian Federation (Vladimir Putin seems to have bagged that title for life) .

This iconic cathedral has become a symbol of Russia due to its distinguishing architecture and prominent position inside the Red Square. It’s one of the most beautiful, wonderful, and mesmerizing historical cathedrals in the world!

St. Basils Cathedral

The interior of the church surprises most people when they visit. In contrast to the large exterior, the inside is not so much one large area, but rather a collection of smaller areas, with many corridors and small rooms. There are 9 small chapels and one mausoleum grouped around a central tower.

Visiting the inside is like walking through a maze, there are even small signs all around the cathedral tracing where to walk, and pointing you in the right direction! The walls are meticulously decorated and painted with intricate floral designs and religious themes.

The church rarely holds service and is instead a museum open for the public to visit.

Insider Tip: During the summer months the line to go inside the cathedral can get quite long! Make sure to arrive early or reserve your tickets online to guarantee quick access into the cathedral!

Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics

The museum does an excellent job of telling the full story of the exciting space race between the USSR and the US! It highlights the brightest moments in Russian history and humanity and is very interesting and fun for all ages!

If you’re a fan of space or just curious about gaining insight into Russia’s fascinating history of space exploration, make sure to add this to your 3 day itinerary in Moscow!

The Alexander Garden

  • A tranquil place to relax near the Red Square
  • Green lawns dotted with sculptures and lovely water features
  • The park is open every day and has no entrance fee

The Alexander Garden was one of the first urban public parks in Moscow! The garden premiered in 1821 and was built to celebrate Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s forces in 1812!

The park is beautiful and well maintained with paths to walk on and benches to rest on. The park contains three separate gardens: the upper garden, middle garden, and lower garden.

The Alexander Garden

Located in the upper garden, towards the main entrance to the park is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with its eternal flame. This monument was created in 1967 and contains the body of a soldier who fell during the Great Patriotic War!

The park stretches along all the length of the western Kremlin wall for about half a mile. Due to its central location in the city, it’ll be easily accessible when you’re out exploring The Red Square.

It provides a bit of relief from the city’s high-energy city streets. Bring a picnic lunch, go for a walk, or just sit and people watch, this is one of the best Moscow sites to wind-down and relax!

Ostankino Television Tower

  • Television and radio tower in Moscow
  • Currently the tallest free-standing structure in Europe
  • Make sure you bring your passport when you visit, you can’t go up without it!

For spectacular views of the city, make sure to add the Ostankino Television Tower to your itinerary for Moscow! This impressive free-standing structure provides stunning views of the city in every direction. The glass floor at the top also provides great alternative views of the city!

Ostankino Television Tower

It takes just 58 seconds for visitors to reach the Tower’s observation deck by super fast elevator. The tower is open every day for long hours and is a great site in Moscow to check out! There is even a restaurant at the top where you can enjoy rotating views of the city while you dine on traditional Russian cuisine or European cuisine!

The tower is somewhat of an architectural surprise in a city that is not known for skyscrapers! To see the city from a new perspective, make sure to add this stop to your Moscow itinerary!

Izmaylovo District

  • The most popular attractions in this district are the kremlin and the flea market
  • Outside of the city center and easy to reach via metro
  • Most popular during the summer and on weekends

Travel outside the city center and discover a unique area of the city! The Izmaylovo District is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, and one of the coolest places to see in Moscow! The two main attractions we recommend checking out are the Kremlin and the flea market.

The Izmailovo Kremlin was established as a cultural center and molded after traditional Russian architecture. This colorful complex is home to several single-subject museums, including a Russian folk art museum and a vodka museum!

Izmaylovo District

Next to the Kremlin is the Izmailovo open-air market, which dates back to the 17th century! The market is connected to the Izmailovo Kremlin by a wooden bridge. Pick up all your Russian souvenirs here, including traditional handicrafts, paintings, books, retro toys, and Soviet memorabilia!

You will find many hand-made and hand-painted options available at higher prices, as well as mass-produced souvenir options at lower prices!

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

  • Closed on Mondays
  • Filled with old arcade games that visitors get to try out!
  • The museum also includes a small cafe and burger shop

For something a little different, check out the Museum of Soviet Arcade Games! The museum features roughly 60 machines from the Soviet era, including video games, pinball machines, and collaborative hockey foosball! The machines inside the museum were produced in the USSR in the mid-1970s.

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

The best part is, most of the games are still playable! Purchase tickets and try the games out for yourself! The museum also has a neat little screening room that plays old Soviet cartoons and an area with Soviet magazines! This unique attraction is a fun addition to a 3 day itinerary in Moscow, and an attraction that all ages will enjoy!

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you.
