15 Unforgettable Things to See and Do in Delray Beach Florida
Julie Diebolt Price
Delray Beach is the most fun small town in Florida. This Village by the Sea offers excitement, relaxation, public art, art galleries, exclusive boutiques, cultural opportunities, fine dining, cafés, and more.
Located on the east coast of south Florida, Delray Beach boasts two miles of immaculate beach in South Palm Beach County on the Atlantic Ocean. Delray Beach, one of the 39 cities in The Palm Beaches, is sandwiched between West Palm Beach and Boynton Beach on the north and Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale, and Miami on the south. You’ll find some of the most beautiful beaches in America here.
Beaches and Waterfront Activities
1. delray municipal beach.
The Delray Municipal Beach , at the end of Atlantic Avenue, covers 1.5 miles of coastline and offers sunbathing, swimming, volleyball, kayaking, snorkeling, windsurfing, and other water sports. Two recreational areas are designated for playing Frisbee, paddleball, kite flying, and paddleboards. Lifeguards are on duty from September to March. The City provides umbrellas, chairs, and cabana rentals.
The Delray Beach Pavilion, located on A1A at the entrance to the beach, is an excellent place to people-watch in the shade.
2. Atlantic Dunes Park
A boardwalk and hard-packed nature trail at Atlantic Dunes Park offer a quieter beach experience about a mile south of Delray Municipal Beach. With handicapped parking next to the park and two Surf Chairs available for the physically challenged, the beach is accessible for most people.
3. Gulfstream Park
Gulfstream Park is about three miles north of Delray Municipal Beach and is a great family beach. It offers a kids’ playground, barbeques, and a shaded picnic area.

Parks and Natural Attractions
4. wakodahatchee wetlands.
Birdwatching and alligator sightings are a highlight at Wakodahatchee Wetlands . When I was there, many photographers with long, expensive lenses were making their way into the park.
This Great Florida Birding Trail boasts over 178 species of birds identified here, as well as fish, frogs, raccoons, turtles, alligators, and rabbits.
Located on Jog Road, about five miles from Downtown Delray Beach and behind the water treatment plant, 50 acres of unused utility land was converted to wetlands that naturally purify reclaimed water. The wetlands are free to enter and are open to the public.
SheBuysTravel Tip : When you visit, park in the designated lot. Guards are posted at the intersection to the water plant and quickly direct visitors who stray.
5. Sandoway House Discovery Center
Marine life exploration and shark feedings are featured in the 1936 beachfront house converted to a nature center, the Sandoway House Discovery Center , on Ocean Boulevard. Hands-on learning experiences focus on Florida’s fragile ecosystems and their inhabitants, and you can take a self-guided tour through the historic home.
6. Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens
Exploring Japanese culture and bonsai collections at the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens allows visitors to experience Japanese works of art and six distinct historical gardens.
The gardens are inspired by significant gardens in Japan but are not replicas. Visitors are encouraged to cultivate a more fundamental relationship with life as they stroll through the grounds.
The museum features artifacts and Japanese art from the museum’s collection and pieces borrowed from private collectors and other institutions throughout the year.
7. Everglades
The Everglades stretches over the southern part of Florida across 1.5 million acres. You can access Everglades National Park via Miami or Everglades City in the northern section or the south section through Homestead.
Day trips to see Florida’s unique wetland ecosystems will allow you to explore this subtropical climate and observe wildlife on guided tours, airboats, and boating tours.
8. Lake Ida
Once a part of the Everglades, Lake Ida is a natural region of tropical wetlands. Seminole Indians were here before and during the pioneer days. Around 1917, the Everglades draining reduced the water level to its current size. Draining wetlands was typical in Florida to make way for population growth and development.
William S. Linton named Lake Ida after his wife. He was one of the founders of Delray Beach,
Less than two miles from Downtown Delray Beach, Lake Ida is popular for boating, fishing, and watersports today.
9. The Girls Strawberry U-Pick
Family-friendly fruit picking at The Girls Strawberry U-Pick is a highly rated activity by TripAdvisor. An organic gourmet country store, The Girls welcomes you to their strawberry patch. Even if strawberries are not in season and there’s nothing to pick, you can relax in their lush garden or stroll around the grounds.
Activities include a petting zoo, swans, exotic birds, and a mining station where you can pan for minerals and gems or participate in a duck derby. After you ride on the Strawberry Express Train, go inside for New York-style pizza and homemade ice cream. These activities are suitable for all age groups.

Museums and Cultural Centers
10. old school square.
Old School Square is the arts and cultural hub in Downtown Delray Beach, with events and galleries in restored 20th-century school buildings on the National Register of Historic Places.
When I was there, the Amphitheatre was alive, with musicians entertaining in the outdoor concert and performance venue. It made for a great background sound while I interacted with the sculptures in front of the Cornell Art Museum.
11. Cornell Art Museum
The Cornell Art Museum presents contemporary art exhibitions in the 1913 Delray Elementary building.
The front of the museum faces Atlantic Avenue, a busy thoroughfare where drivers patiently wait for traffic to move. For several blocks, many popular restaurants serve patrons on both sides of the street in this historic beach town.
12. Silverball Museum
The Silverball Museum is a colorful, loud (they provide ear plugs), interactive museum with classic pinball and arcade games. Remarkable murals cover the front and side of the building. Watching the patrons try their luck and skill with pinball machines and other 1950s arcade games is fun.
Arts and Entertainment
13. pineapple grove arts district.
Gallery hopping and public art are a real treat in the Pineapple Grove Arts District . From painted sidewalks and marble and metal sculptures to block-long murals, the Cornell Art Museum, and live music, the vibe on the streets is exciting and fun in Downtown Delray Beach.
14. Saltwater Brewery
Saltwater Brewery is the first production microbrewery founded by local Floridians and has a tasting room and beer garden. Every day, they offer live music and food truck fare. Take advantage of the Happy Hour every Monday through Friday from noon to 6 pm. They are located on Atlantic Ave. near Interstate 95.
15. Golf in The Palm Beaches
Florida’s Golf Capital boasts more than 160 golf courses, from miniature golf and public golf courses to championship links.
Putt’n Around , miniature golf with fun themes for the entire family, is open 365 days a year. The mini golf course features two 18-hole courses and food delivery hole-side.
Shopping and Dining
Shops, restaurants, and vibrant nightlife are the trademarks of Downtown Delray Beach. Boutique shopping for beachwear and souvenirs with a Florida beach theme is on Atlantic Avenue and many side streets.
Places to Eat
With so many gourmet dining experiences in Delray Beach, it is difficult to mention them all. I share here my personal experience and one highly recommended restaurant.
Campi at The Ray Hotel
When I travel, I often eat dinner at the hotel where I’m staying. That saves the hassle of driving, finding a parking place, and avoiding driving after drinking. It’s a bonus when the restaurant on The Ray Hotel’s ground floor is as good as Campi .
I ordered a NY Strip steak with glazed cippolini onion in a red wine sauce, preceded by a Caesar salad and antipasti. The dinner rolls paired with olive oil for dipping were crisp and delicious.
Lulu’s
While I didn’t have time to eat at Lulu’s , it was recommended by several people I met. They specialize in a shareable charcuterie board with a selection of cheeses and meats served with crackers, fig jam, honey, grapes, and olives. Also on the menu are sandwiches, salads and bowls, and entrees like pork chops, plates of pasta, chicken, salmon, and steaks.
Where to Stay
The ray hotel.
Many options for lodging are available in Delray Beach to meet all budgets. I stayed at The Ray Hotel Delray Beach in the heart of the Pineapple Grove Arts District. Within a short walk of Atlantic Avenue, nightlife, museums, public art, dining, and wellness sessions, The Ray Hotel, Hilton Curio Collection, is a contemporary respite in this Village by the Sea.
In addition to the on-site restaurant, a rooftop pool, and The Cube meeting space, I enjoyed the spacious suite with a kitchenette and dining area and the balcony where I could enjoy the sunset or my morning coffee as I watched the Village wake up.
The Ray Hotel hosted me, but all opinions are my own.
The Seagate Hotel & Spa
The Seagate Hotel offers guests beach club access to private and exclusive space on the beach, private cabanas, and poolside lounging.

How To Get To Delray Beach
Miami International Airport (MIA) serves South Florida and is about 55 miles from Downtown Delray Beach.
West Palm Beach Airport (PBI) is about 18 miles from Delray Beach.
Fort Lauderdale Airport (FLL) is 32 miles from Delray Beach via Interstate I-95.
Highway A1A is the most scenic drive along the beach between the Atlantic Ocean and Highway 1.
The fastest drive is on Interstate 95, which is toll-free in Florida for its entire length, except for I-95 Express into and out of Miami, which charges a fee.
Amtrak serves the Delray Beach station daily from points north, arriving at about 5:30 pm. Trains depart in the morning and afternoon, going north.
Getting Around Delray Beach
A ride-share service called Freebee carries passengers in a six-seater golf cart for free. It’s like Uber and Lyft, where you request a ride through their app. In this case, you tip the driver while the ride is free. Businesses in Delray Beach sponsor it.
Best Time Of Year To Go Delray Beach
If you plan to visit The Palm Beaches, consider visiting between December and April. The weather is generally mild and pleasant during these months, with temperatures ranging from the mid-70s to 80s Fahrenheit. When I was there in February, we had unseasonably cold weather in the 60s.
The months of December through February are the busiest ones in South Florida. The shoulder months of May and November have fewer crowds and lower prices. Hurricanes occur in the summer and bring hot and sultry temperatures.

Things to do | trump’s lawyers say it is impossible for him to post bond covering $454 million civil fraud judgment, things to do, subscriber only, things to do | what’s next for delray beach market a sports bar, dance club, restaurant and more are planned.
The four-story landmark known as Delray Beach Market — billed as the largest food hall in Florida when it opened in 2021 — is poised to come back to life after staying closed for the past year.
This weekend, it’s marking an early step toward again welcoming the public: An upscale sports bar will become its first tenant to open as part of ongoing renovation plans. A larger goal will be to fully reopen the entire Delray Beach Market by the end of 2025.
Bounce Delray Beach, at 33 SE Third Ave., is having its soft opening Saturday. Among its attractions: a 60-foot-wide LED wall, more than 20 other screens that constitute a “TV chandelier” for visitors to watch games, a 360-degree bar, and a medley of menu items and live music offerings.
Bounce is just the start. There are two other signed tenants: New Jersey-based Greek-inspired restaurant Lefkes Estiatorio, as well as Good Night John Boy, a ’70s disco-themed dance club and bar. And more plans are still afoot beyond that.
“Delray has become Delray because of the restaurants and bar scene,” said Jeff Sussman, the president of Sussman Restaurant Brokerage, which is behind the market. “Once you’re (at Delray Beach Market), you will have a choice of several different locations. In other words, you could have dinner at one place and then go and have a drink at another place and then walk next door and dance at the disco.”
Cole Bernard, a partner with Brandit Hospitality Group, the operating team for Bounce Delray Beach, is looking forward to Saturday’s opening.
“Whether you’re coming out for an Inter Miami soccer game or you’re coming out for a Miami Heat basketball playoff game during the week, it’s going to be the premier destination for sports viewing,” Bernard said.
Bounce was originally intended to open in the fall of 2022 in the city’s $300 million Atlantic Crossing development , which sits on Atlantic Avenue just east of Federal Highway. But those plans were scrapped largely after residents living around the area expressed concerns for late-night noise spurred by the club’s planned 2 a.m. closing time.
Instead, Bounce decided to open in the Delray Beach Market, which is about a half-mile west of Atlantic Crossing. Its new location will let Bounce remain open late and be an important tenant for the market, which shut down early last year to undergo a revamp.
Some construction delays kept the bar from kicking off earlier, Bernard said. “Bounce is excited to finally open its doors in Delray,” he said. “It’s been years in the making.”
It’ll be a “sports bar, meets entertainment venue, meets restaurant.” After an initial “soft launch,” the grand opening will take place in April, Bernard said.
Bounce has three other locations — two in New York and one in Chicago. Bernard added: “It being a true sports bar with day life and nightlife on the weekend, it’s just a new element that really hasn’t hit this part of town.”
It will be open 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. from Monday through Friday, and from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
Looking toward next year
The Delray Beach Market is expected to be fully reopened by the end of 2025, after facing some hurdles, including challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The market, billed as a food hall, first shut down on Jan. 30, 2023 , and was originally going to reopen in the summer of that year. Rising food prices, inflation and labor costs were all factors that led to the remodeling decision.
“The demise of the food hall was the demise of many businesses,” Sussman said. “It was just too difficult for each of the vendors to keep up with it.”
Now, amid the new plans, Delray Beach Market is also considering bringing in “a very famous Italian restaurant out of New York City that has been around for ages,” Sussman said.
Plans are also in the works to create “a very sexy, unique entrance from the front door leading to the escalators going up to the mezzanine, and we’re looking for the right tenant there,” Sussman said.
“We’ve been kind of holding off on picking the right one. We’ve had a lot of interest in this particular space to do a private club, a speakeasy,” he said. “We’ve curated this building to be really kind of like an eater-tainment establishment within the city.
“So we’re being very, very choosy about who we pick to take the mezzanine space.”
The careful curation of tenants along with features such as a parking garage are hoped to make the new and improved market a magnet for the city.
“What we’ve accomplished here is really to take a building that’s in one of the best markets in the country and in an area that is just known for restaurants and bars and people watching, and we’ve created something really special basically under one roof,” Sussman said.
Rob Long, who serves as a city commissioner and Community Redevelopment Agency commissioner, said he’s excited to see the market reopen for the community. Long and his fiancée, Alexandria Ayala, a Palm Beach County School Board member, intend to drop by Bounce on Saturday after the city’s Saint Patrick’s Day festivities.
“We’re anxious to see what the second version of the market is going to look like, (and) hope it is something that is more sustainable for the community, and we’re excited to see what’s in store,” he said.

Mexico under caution warning from U.S. for spring break. 5 Florida beach towns to go to instead
Fort lauderdale, panama city and daytona beach not the only florida spring break destinations.
College students and families planning a spring break in Mexico may want to reconsider, according to an advisory issued by the U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Mexico.
The advisory , posted Monday, says that while many thousands of people travel through Mexico safely, Mexico-bound visitors should be aware of high levels of crime (particularly in the downtown areas of popular spring break destinations Cancún. , Playa Del Carmen and Tulum), sexual assault, counterfeit or ineffective prescription drugs, unregulated alcohol, high-priced hospitals and strict laws against drunk and disorderly behavior, possession of drugs, guns or ammunition, along with natural dangers such as dangerous beaches without lifeguards or warnings.
Well, if you're looking for a new spring break vacation location, the party did start in Florida.
Ever since a New York university swim coach took his team down to Florida one spring for some early training in the 1930s, the idea of spending a week or two in the warm has been a powerful motivator, building up to hundreds of thousands of bathing-suit-clad students bringing their volleyballs and fake IDs to Fort Lauderdale, Panama City Beach and Daytona Beach in the 1980s. Crackdowns on public behavior and stricter alcohol laws calmed the parties down a bit, and famed party town Miami Beach is pushing back hard against spring break this year.
But Florida still remains a top destination for people wanting a break from the cold, with March temps projected in the 70s.
If you're avoiding Mexico this year and don't want to bother with a passport, Fort Lauderdale, Daytona Beach and Panama City Beach are still top places to relax, unwind and enjoy yourself. But the Sunshine State has other locations to consider besides those annual favorites.
‘You are going to pay the price:’ DeSantis sends more cops to Florida spring break hot spots. Here’s where
1. TripAdvisor names Siesta Beach one of the best in the world
If you want the best, head to the west. Siesta Beach in Siesta Key, west of Sarasota on the state's west coast, regularly makes TripAdvisor's list of best beaches based on user reviews. Currently listed at No. 2 in the United States and No. 9 worldwide , the site praises the snow-white sand and small-town feel.
"Whether you want to relax or fill your day with activities, Siesta Beach delivers," Tripadvisor said on its website.
"Kick back on the white sand, go swimming in the clear water, play some outdoor sports, or simply admire the sunset — it's up to you. The family-friendly beach is easy to get to via public transportation, offers wheelchair access, and has plenty of parking, restrooms, and a small concession stand. There are a variety of shops and lively restaurants nearby, too."
Siesta Key, on the brilliant green waters of the Gulf of Mexico, is close to lots of restaurants and bars, a thriving arts community, and one of the largest state parks in Florida, Myakka River State Park.
Take that, Hawaii! : This Florida beach tops Dr. Beach's Top 10 list for 2023
2. Delray Beach a small-town spot with plenty of attraction
Delray Beach , a 15-square-mile city in Palm Beach County, was awarded the prestigious international Blue Flag designation last year, one of only two in the entire U.S., after meeting 33 stringent environmental, educational, safety and accessibility criteria.
But what visitors will probably be interested in is the vibrant downtown area, huge number of unique restaurants, and, of course, the 7,000 feet of beach with a mile of it blessedly free from looming high-rise condos. Surf, sail, or just hit the water at the beach that "Travel Holiday" magazine named the best public beach in the Southeast for swimming. Or, for some less crowded sand time, head to nearby Atlantic Dunes Park, which features 450 feet of guarded beach.
When the sun goes down or you've just had enough for one day, Delray's Atlantic Avenue is a 20-minute walk from the shore with a staggering assortment of restaurants, bars, art galleries, clothing boutiques and antique stores. A few miles away, Delray Marketplace offers even more. Delray is also convenient to several other excellent beaches and attractions.
3. New Smyrna Beach is Daytona without the crowds, mostly
Daytona Beach is famed for its 26 miles of hard-packed beach and its worldwide tradition of unbridled spring break madness, but if you want a somewhat calmer version just head a bit south to New Smyrna Beach.
Students (and their families) congregate at the beach and hit the charming shops and restaurants on Flagler Avenue for a relaxing week of sand and surf, within easy driving distance of Daytona Beach, Orlando and Cocoa Beach.
However, keep in mind that the city imposed a youth curfew last year to cut down on disruptions, trash and drunk driving so it's likely there'll be one again this year.
4. Key West is still a party town
There's an amazing laid-back party scene year-round in Key West, so why not have your spring break there? The southernmost tip of the continental U.S. is just four miles long by one mile wide so once you get there transportation isn't a problem and live music and great food is never very far away.
Plus Key West may have the most activities to do when you're not actually lying on the beach. Swim, dive down to the coral reefs, fish, take one of the many boat tours or sunset sails, jetski, visit some astounding art galleries, watch the performers at the sunset celebration at Mallory Square, visit Ernest Hemingway's house and pet the descendants of his six-toed cats, eat at some fantastic restaurants, or just cruise Duval Street for colorful nightlife.
If Key West gets too crowded there are wonderful beaches and places to visit on the other Keys, and Key Largo is the diving capital of Florida.
5. Naples is a great family Florida spring break vacation place
Naples in Southwest Florida on the Gulf Coast doesn't get the spring break crowds that nearby Fort Myers does, which may make it more attractive to visitors seeking a more peaceful destination. TripAdvisor calls it a "polished, culture-packed city fringed by blue bays and sugar-sand beaches."
Packed with upscale shopping, parks, art festivals and museums, Naples also boasts nine miles of pristine beaches where you can enjoy the sun, watch for dolphins from Naples Pier (which shoots out 1,000 feet into the Gulf of Mexico) and get extremely fresh seafood at one of the many beachside restaurants .
But really, there are dozens of Florida beachside cities and towns that make great spring break destinations.
Check out the place named best beach town in the nation , or this one Reader's Digest included in their " 15 Best Beaches in Florida Locals Want to Keep Secret " list, or the other beaches TripAdvisor named the best , or the places Florida students go , or the Florida shores that Dr. Beach recommends , or the list of "hottest" spring break beaches .
Florida has 825 miles of sandy beaches. If you want a beach holiday, it's hard to miss here.
Bahama, Jamaica also under travel advisories
The U.S. Department of State issued a travel advisory for Mexico last year, with various levels of travel warnings including a Level 2 advisory for Cancún for violent crime. Travel advisories have been issued for the Bahamas and Jamaica as well.
The State Dept. has listed 20 locations around the world under Level 3 advisories, meaning visitors should avoid them and reconsider, and 21 Level 4 places they say Americans should not go to at all.
