Tour de Force (La Grande Boucle): Film Review

Tour de Force Film Still - H 2013

PARIS — Racing ahead with a decent concept until it dopes itself on way too much feel-goodness, French cycling comedy Tour de Force ( La Grande Boucle ) never nabs the yellow jersey, but doesn’t exactly come in dead last, either. Rather, this slickly crafted effort from director Laurent Tuel ( Ultimate Heist ) sticks safely to the genre’s chosen routes while providing a few touching moments in its tale of a forlorn biking fanatic who embarks on his very own Tour de France, hoping to win his wife back in the process. Far from funny, yet easy enough on the eyes, this wide Wild Bunch release should see adequate summertime returns, especially in Francophonia.

Related Stories

Cannes adds michel hazanavicius, mohammad rasoulof, emanuel parvu titles to official competition, diane kruger, fatih akin reunite for 'amrum'.

A thrifty setup introduces us to Tour junkie Francois Nouel ( Clovis Cornillac ), who ditches vacation plans with his wife ( Elodie Bouchez ) and son ( Paul Granier ) to volunteer on the official support team of pro bike supplier Sport 2000. But his dreams soon are quashed when he gaffs at the company’s pre-race cocktail party, and the now jobless and wifeless Francois sees no other choice then to hop on his 10-speed and follow the Tour de France’s 3,500 km route anyway, riding alone and a day ahead of the actual racers.

The Bottom Line Despite some impressive racing sequences, this French cycling comedy pulls a few too many flats.

Along the way, he crosses paths with a shady trainer/manager (the lively Bouli Lanners ), who turns Francois into a bankable publicity stunt, as well as an extreme biking fan ( Pierre Bojean ), who follows the lone rider around in his Winnebago, providing encouragement, free meals and massages from his nudist wife ( Annick Christiaens ). Eventually, the Tour media circus catches on to Francois’ exploits, and he becomes a celebrity himself, stealing the spotlight from a trash-talking Italian cyclist ( Ary Abittan ) and raking in fans, sponsors and even his own doping scandal.

Lots of these elements could have been mined for laughs, but Tuel and a team of five screenwriters can hardly muster a workable gag, relying too much on broad caricature, especially with regards to the various bit players (including a thuggish French rapper — played by real hip-hop artist Doudou Masta — who happens to be a huge Tour fan himself).

The film plays somewhat better when it moves away from comedy to center on Francois’ family dilemma, which comes to a head after his son runs away, and he has to decide between finishing the race and becoming a responsible dad. Yet even there, Tuel turns everything into sentimental mush, wrapping up his story in an altogether unconvincing fashion, especially when it comes to the inevitable reconciliation between husband and wife — the latter of whom is little more than a mindless plot point.

Perhaps one reason the humor falls so flat is leading man Cornillac ( A Very Long Engagement ), who seems too stiff for the broad-based comedy yet is never expressive enough for the dramatic sections. Where he does impress, however, is in the various racing sequences, which are handled realistically and beautifully photographed by DP Gilles Porte ( The Conquest ). It’s during these moments that Tuel reveals some of the craftiness he displayed in his 2009 Jean Reno -starrer Ultimate Heist , and Tour de Force does a great job capturing the majestic landscapes and intense sportsmanship that have made the century-old event such a well-watched phenomenon.

Further enhancing the athleticism are several cameos by actual Tour de France champions (including Bernard Hinault and Laurent Jalabert ) — a stunt likely to please diehard fans who may otherwise be let down by the film’s fluffy finale.

"Director Laurent Tuel’s latest is a gorgeously shot Gallic road movie, following bike-nut Francois (Clovis Cornillac), as he cycles his own Tour de France, in a kooky bid to win back his wife. It’s a light-comedy drama, short on big laughs and lacking in major drama, but entertainingly breezy in the way only French movies seem to get away with."

Joe Bonamassa: Tour de Force – Live in London Review

In the past decade, Joe Bonamassa has been as prolific as any artist in blues rock, or any genre for that matter. Bonamassa has already released two albums this year alone, a duets albums with Beth Hart, Seesaw , as well as An Acoustic Evening at the Vienna Opera House . Tour de Force   is perhaps Bonamassa’s most ambitious release to date, featuring four live performances on consecutive days in London. The performances include The Borderline, Shepherd’s Bush Empire, Hammersmith Apollo, and the Royal Albert Hall, which follow the path of Bonamassa’s career journey as he’s worked his way up performing all the venues. The performances also feature multiple bands and over 60 songs overall.

The Borderline

Joe Bonamassa cut his teeth at The Borderline in London before making his way to Shepherd’s Bush Empire, Hammersmith Apollo, and eventually the Royal Albert Hall. This made it the perfect destination to open Tour de Force , and has Bonamasa performing with a power trio that includes Michael Rhodes on bass and Anton Fig on drums.

The Borderline performance features many songs from earlier in Bonamassa’s career, and songs he doesn’t generally perform often today, such as “I Know Where I Belong,” which kicks off the show. Also appearing from Bonamassa’s A New Day Yesterday album are “Miss You, Hate You” and “Don’t Burn Down That Bridge.” Fans are also treated to a cult favorite with “Pain and Sorrow,” a song which is off So It’s Like That ,   perhaps one of Bonamassa’s more underrated recordings. “Burning Hell” also makes its way into the set and the show closes with a cover of Jimi Hendrix’s “Are You Experienced,” in what may be the most high energy show of the Tour de Force .

Shepherd’s Bush Empire

Night two at Shepherd’s Bush Empire was the blues night and featured a horns section. The set list consisted mostly of songs from The Ballad of John Henry album through Driving Towards The Daylight . B.B. King’s “Chains & Things” made its way onto the set list, a song which Bonamassa previously recorded for The Ballad Of John Henry , though it did not make the album and was later released as a bonus track on the Japanese version of Black Rock .

Hammersmith Apollo

Night three features a set list more in line with what we’d see at a Bonamassa show today. The show kicks off with an acoustic set and then moves to electric after five songs. One of the highlights of this performance is the cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Tea For One,” which was featured on the first Kevin Shirley produced Bonamassa album,  You & Me . Doug Henthorn joins Bonamassa onstage to sing lead vocals, as he did on the studio version, and the live performance was well worth the wait.

Royal Albert Hall

Night four sees Bonamassa return to the Royal Albert Hall, the venue that helped launch his career to the next level back in 2009. The show kicks off with an eight song acoustic set, and then an electric set after intermission, which begins with “Slow Train.” The Royal Albert Hall performance includes most Bonamassa staples, including “Driving Towards The Daylight,” with Doug Henthorn on backup vocals, an out of this world rendition of “The Ballad of John Henry,” where keyboardist Arlan Schierbaum really shines on the Hammond organ, plus “Mountain Time,” the always mesmerizing “Sloe Gin,” and one of the most raucous renditions to date of “Just Got Paid,” which closes out the show.

Bonus Features

Each show on Tour de Force  features a bonus disc with additional features, including a four part documentary chronicling Bonamassa’s rise in today’s volatile music business, his partnership with longtime manager Roy Weisman, and their journey to the Tour de Force . There is also a behind the scenes look at each London show and a photo collection of the performances.

When it’s all said and done, Tour de Force lives up to its name and then some. Bonamassa turns in another masterful performance, as do the rest of the musicians featured. There is plenty of material here to keep fans happy while they wait for Bonamassa’s next studio album to be released in 2014.

Kids Scream as Putin's Guard Fire at Crowd in 'Mock Execution' Gone Wrong

V ideos circulating on social media appear to show members of Vladimir Putin 's internal security forces opening fire at a crowd in the Moscow region as part of "demonstration performances," reportedly injuring a child.

The VChK-OGPU Telegram channel, which has close ties to Russian security forces, published a video on Sunday of the incident in the city of Elektrostal. It apparently shows members of the Rosgvardia, the National Guard, which is separate from Russia's armed forces and reports directly to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"During demonstration performances, the fighters of the Russian Guard decided...to shoot spectators with children (fortunately, with blank cartridges). Small children screamed clutching their heads and fell to the ground. There were injuries. Serious damage from a bounced cartridge case," the channel said.

Ukraine's 24 Kanal TV channel said a number of Telegram channels posted footage from the scene. It said the National Guard "for some reason" decided to point their weapons at spectators, which included many children.

A 34-year-old woman was reportedly wounded on her cheek and jaw, while a child was hospitalized with a head injury. An investigation has been launched into the incident by Russia's Investigative Committee.

Newsweek reached out to Russia's Foreign Ministry via email for comment.

The British Ministry of Defence said in an intelligence update earlier this month that Putin is arming the National Guard with "heavy weaponry" following the aborted mutiny led by Wagner Group chief Yevgeny Prigozhin on June 24, in which he marched towards Moscow.

As part of a declaration signed by Putin on August 4, Rosgvardia will be receiving weaponry which could include artillery supplies and attack helicopters, the MOD said, describing the National Guard as a "sprawling organisation of up to 200,000 front line personnel."

By equipping it with heavy weaponry, the Kremlin could be "doubling down on resourcing Rosgvardia as one of the key organisations to ensure regime security," the intelligence update said.

Russia created its National Guard, or Rosgvardia , in 2016. National Guard soldiers have been heavily used in Ukraine throughout the full-scale invasion launched last February, and many have been sacked for refusing to fight in the war-torn country.

In a speech on Russia's National Guard Day on March 27, Putin described its key tasks as "countering terrorism, extremism and organized crime, guarding significant strategic facilities, maintaining law and order during mass events, and monitoring the arms trade."
