Colón Panama Cruise Port: Tips, Attractions and Weather

The Colón cruise port is the gateway to the Panama Canal on the Caribbean side and one of the more popular stops on “exotic” western Caribbean cruises.

The most popular western Caribbean cruises usually visit some combination of Jamaica, Grand Cayman and Cozumel. The word “exotic” in exotic western cruises promoted by cruise lines usually means the ship will go to one or more ports of call on on the Central American coast. Roatan, Belize City, Costa Rica and Panama’s Colón lead the list.

Cruise visitors usually arrive at Colón 2000 or Pier 6 of Cristóbal port on the south side of Limon Bay. The location on the bay is important to know for the sake of seeing as much as possible in the shortest amount of time.

Colón is the provincial capital, and the province has Central America’s largest port system.

Like other Central American countries with a Caribbean coast, Panama offers more in the way of ecotourism, history, culture and education than just plain beaches. In fact, Colón is not the place to go for beaches. So plan excursions accordingly.

Quick Travel Tips

Where is colón panama.

Colón Panama is a little more than 200 miles east to southeast of Puerto Limon in Costa Rica. Because of their closeness, they often are included on the same cruise itinerary. But like Limon, Colón is one of the southernmost ports of any western Caribbean cruise at 900 miles south of Cozumel. For that reason, Colón is usually on exotic western Caribbean itineraries of at least seven days.

Attractions and Shore Excursions

A cruise to Panama might lead someone to think that the main attraction is the Panama Canal and the famous locks that raise and lower ships as they cross between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

They would be right, but Colón has more to offer.

Walking Around Attractions

Colón cruise port map.

The area around the Colón 2000 terminal is known for its restaurants and shopping. The area around the nearby Cristóbal port is known for its craft markets.

The two locations are about three miles apart and take 10 minutes to reach by regulated taxis.

It is worth noting that Colón has a reputation for street crime, but government authorities have made a strong effort to make tourists feel secure within the duty-free zone. Make sure to use a registered taxi when traveling outside of the zone and don’t display wallets or jewelry. When possible, walk with or among other tourists.

Colon 2000 is a growing tourism district with restaurants, shops, casinos and duty free shopping mall. The mall calls itself, “The only tourism and tax-free mall in the Caribbean”, although some other ports with malls beg to differ. The mall has dozens of shops representing some major international brands.

The Panama government has invested $900 million in a major city renovation. It includes refurbished streets, improved sewage systems and upgrades of public spaces and buildings.

Otherwise, the city doesn’t have much to see or do outside of Colón 2000. It is one of the few Caribbean ports without any guided city shore excursions at this time. Most cruise visitors opt for the shore excursions that take them outside of the city.

Shore Excursions

The most popular shore excursions take cruise travelers to the Panama Canal locks.

For first-time visitors, it is useful to know that the Panama Canal was made possible because of the narrow width of Panama between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans and a huge investment of money and labor (as well as lives). It also was made possible by the presence of the sprawling Lake Gatún near Colón.

Limon Bay connects with Lake Gatún at the Gatún Locks, the first of the famous locks on the Atlantic side that raise and lower ships going through Panama and that need to adjust to different terrains and sea levels.

The lake and the locks are only about a 25 minute drive from Colón via taxi or excursion bus.

A tour of the locks is not the most exciting experience for a cruise traveler in the Caribbean , but it is one of the most impressive and educational excursions. The tour is highly recommended for families in particular.

Anyone on a tight schedule can visit the locks and return to Colón within a few hours. Other visitors usually combine the locks with other activities including a kayak or canoe tour around Lake Gatún to view the numerous species of wildlife that live there. Less active people can take boat tours.

Other Attractions

Two of the next best attractions in the area are in opposite directions of each other along the Atlantic coast.

Fort San Lorenzo, one of the oldest Spanish forts in America, lies about 45 minutes west of Colón. Built in 1597, this UNESCO World Heritage Site was designed to protect the mouth of Chagres River. A four- to five-hour tour that includes both the fort and the Gatún locks will cost about $100 per person with discounts for children.

The Chagres was an entry point for boats that traveled upstream to reach Venta de Cruces. From that point, they walked to Panama City on a trail Camino de Cruces.

Cruise visitors to Colon also can go to Panama City on a much quicker shore excursion than early settlers. They can take a train or excursion bus from the Colon docks on a one-hour ride across the country. It includes a tour of the historical Panama City as well as a visit to the Miraflores Locks. Prices usually range from about $75 to $150 depending on the length, mode of transportation and other factors.

Portobelo National Park is another UNESCO World Heritage site located about an hour east of Colón. Christopher Columbus discovered and named the landing site Portobelo, which is Italian for “beautiful port,” in 1502.

Francisco Valverde y Mercado founded the city of San Felipe de Portobelo in 1597. The Spaniards shipped gold and silver from Peru, unloaded it at Panama City and carried it on mules across the isthmus to Portobelo. Visitors can see the remains of the original fortifications that protected the plunder from pirates.

Beaches Near the Cruise Port

Colón is known for the above shore excursions, but it’s not known as a beach destination.

Although Panama has its share of good beaches, most of them are located elsewhere, like Bocas del Toro.

Cruise visitors to Colon with a passion for beaches can go to Playa La Angosta, which is about a 40 minute drive from Colon, or to Isla Grande, an island about an hour away.

Shopping / Restaurants

Visitors can start their shopping at the modest Colón 2000 mall right by the cruise docks. It is known for a handful of shops, restaurants, a casino and a safe environment. For safety reasons, tourists should not venture outside of the mall unless by taxi or excursion bus.

Colón claims the second largest duty-free shopping zone in the world.  The much bigger opportunity lies at the Colón Free Zone southeast of the cruise docks. It has more than 3,000 companies represented on more than 1,000 acres of land.

Cristobal Pier on the eastern side of the Panama Canal has an active crafts market.

Another interesting option is for passengers to hop on a train and go to Panama City. The distance is 46 miles, and the ride lasts about an hour. Passengers can board the train at the Atlantic Passenger Station in Mount Hope near the Port of Cristobal. It is a mile and a half southwest of the cruise terminal. Multiple cruise lines offer this trip as an excursion.

Getting Around / Transportation

Colón is better known as a port where cruise passengers take excursions into the countryside or over to Panama City rather than staying in the city. Although taxi service is available in Colón, there are few options for traveling short distances.

“Rather than spending the day in Colon, many cruise passengers choose instead to participate in shore excursions arranged by their ships or tours organized independently,” as one cruise line said.

Panama weather on the Caribbean coast enjoys drier weather from late winter to early summer and wetter weather from early summer to late fall.

The wet weather in the second half of the year is the result of the Caribbean hurricane season. It brings heavier rains to the Caribbean and parts of Central America. Panama rarely gets hit by a hurricane, but instead has spikes in rain.

Temperatures are warm throughout the year with average highs nearing 90 degrees Fahrenheit or 32 Celsius.

About colon.

The gentle sea with the purest water and the magnificent sandy beaches of Colon attract more and more tourists yearly. The crystal turquoise color of the seawater sets the level of your vacation somewhere between stunning and perfect. So if you are looking for the perfect sea, this is your place!

General information

The coastline of Colon is deeply indented, it looks like a constant struggle of sea and land for dominance, the latter yielding or pushing back the sea rival, forming innumerable bays, inlets and peninsulas of various shapes and sizes with numerous beaches. Many of them have such an important feature, like a natural shadow. This is far from uncommon here.

Regarding location, Colon is dominated by beaches outside urban areas in a natural setting. They may not be convenient for all categories of travelers (you can use filtering by access type or audience), primarily due to possible access difficulties. But they always give you extra points due to the amazing natural views, so isn't that why most of us go to the beach?

The general consensus is that Panama isn't really a beach port - it's more of a history/see the canal kind of place. There have been a few folks here that did a tour with Mario that included a beach but have also read that the beaches are not very clean and not what you'd expect if you've visited other ports known for their beaches. It's also not recommended to leave the port area in Colon without a tour. I will be there in a few weeks and hope the port area is not as bad as everyone says but we are doing the railroad tour so should be ok I think.

I had also read terrible things here about Belize and ended up loving the place, though.

Your assesment is accurate. While there are some beaches that can be found on the tours offered by the ships and Mario, this part of Panama is not really a beach attraction. Some of the better beaches in Panama are located on the Pacific side and in the interior of the country. Too far from the ship to be completed in a few hours.

Colon is not anything you can't afford to miss, there are no real tourist attractions in Colon. It's just port city in a Central America. The only thing there is the Free Zone. It is possible to get some things there such as jewelry, they are really only set up to cater to businesses, large quantity purchases etc.

Your tour on the train will be great, they will have you out of Colon fairly quickly and the train ride will be very enjoyable... lots of great scenery.

Last updated on January 30th, 2024 at 09:46 am

Welcome to Colon, a bustling city located at the Caribbean entrance of the Panama Canal. Discover the rich history of the region at the Panama Canal Expansion Observation Center, explore the colorful architecture of Colon's historic district, or take a boat tour through the Gatun Lake. Immerse yourself in the vibrant Afro-Caribbean culture, sample delicious local cuisine, and witness the engineering marvel that is the Panama Canal.

Check out these excursions in Colon .

The temperature in Colon has little variation during the year. It ranges from a low of 77 degrees F to a high of 86 degrees F. Seldom does the range dip below 75 degrees F or rise above 89 degrees F. It tends to be hot and oppressive year-round.

The official currency of Panama is the Balboa. The currency is named after Spanish explorer Vasco Nunez de Balboa, who discovered the Pacific Ocean in 1513. One Balboa is divided into 100 cents. One Balbo equals one U.S. dollar, and the dollar is legally circulated in Panama. The day-to-day currency used in Panama is the U.S. Dollar, and there are no paper Balboas, although there are Panamanian coins. Traveler’s checks are not accepted, but major credit and debit cards are.

Wireless Internet:

There is an internet cafe in the Colon 2000 Cruise Terminal that offers WiFi.

Spanish is the official language of Panama. There is a small smattering of English spoken and an even smaller amount of French.

Where You Dock in Colon – Panama

Colon has two cruise terminals. The Cristobal Pier is located in Colon, Panama, on the eastern side of the canal. That facility is seldom used anymore.

Cruise ships arrive at Colon 2000 or Pier 6 of Cristobal Port on the south side of Limon Bay.

Cruise passengers will board for shore excursions right outside the terminal. If you take an organized tour, your bus will be in the parking area just a few yards from the gangway.

Getting Around Colon – Panama

Walking: It is not advised to walk around Colon, as it is not safe.

Taxi: There are taxi services in Colon, and the fares are relatively inexpensive. Taxi prices are fixed by the central desk in the Colon 2000 center.

Car: There are several rental car services in Colon. The majority of the rental cars are manual transmission, and you will have to pay an additional charge if you want a car with  automatic transmission.

To rent a car, you will need an I.D., a valid driver’s license approved for driving in Panama and hold third-party auto insurance. Hertz, Budget, Thrifty, Mexrentacar, Dollar, and Sunnycars have locations in Colon. Driving is on the right-hand side of the road in Panama.

Shopping In Colon – Panama

The Colon Free Zone is primarily a commercial park where companies import and export products free of duty. It is not set up to sell individual items to tourists. If you are able to make a purchase, your item will be sent to Tocumen International Airport in Panama City to be retrieved when you depart. If you are part of a cruise, this procedure will probably not work well for you.

There is a shopping center, strip mall type, across from the pier. It contains a grocery store, a sandwich shop, and souvenir stores.

Dining In Colon – Panama

The cafe at Cristobal Pier has bar-type snacks. The Colon 2000 port complex also houses restaurants Arrecifes and Rotana Cafe.

Arrecifes serves Caribbean, Latin cuisine and seafood.

Things To Do in Colon – Panama

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Port Colon 2000 (@portcolon2000)

As was mentioned, Colon is primarily a base for day trips with little in the way of attractions for tourists. Again, it is not a city you will want to traverse on your own due to safety concerns.

Here are the few attractions in Colon:

Gatun Locks: These are the largest locks in the Panama Canal and are open to visitors from 9 am until 4 pm seven days a week. Use a taxi service to negotiate round trip service to this area.

Colon City Tour: There are coach and taxi-based city tours. Most of the tours will show you the New Washington Hotel that overlooks the entrance to the canal. A stone-built Episcopal Christ Church Cathedral and a monument to Christopher Columbus are the main sights on the tour.

Portobelo: In old Spanish, this name meant “beautiful port.” Located in the northern part of the Isthmus of Panama, Portobelo is about 20 miles northeast of Colon. There are the ruins of five Spanish forts and incredible sea views.

Colón Panama Port Guide

For a short stop on a Panama Canal cruise , Colón is a must. Colón is home to one of the largest duty-free shopping areas in the world called Zona Libre, so shoppers might need a second suitcase to take home all their local goods. Colón is a resilient city, building and rebuilding after fires, occupations, and economic recessions. Today, the city is making a concerted effort to revitalize its parks, monuments, and attractions.

On a cruise to Colón, Panama, leave time to see one of its most famous attractions—the Panama Canal. Or hop in a car for a day trip to it’s largest metropolitan area: Panama City. Explore Casco Viejo, the historic district, for a glimpse of Panama from another time, and some of the best restaurants in the area. Though Colón isn’t as flashy as other cities in Panama, it’s centrally located to get to any number of nearby excursions to stunning rainforests, national parks like Soberania National Park, and historic sites like the ruins of San Lorenzo.

Culture & History of the Colón Cruise Port

During the California Gold Rush in the mid-1800s, many people decided to migrate vast distances to start new lives on the West Coast of the United States. Demand for a railroad connecting Panama and the United States grew, and interest in traveling to California from Panama—instead of trekking across the continent—skyrocketed too. Later, the French took over the city and built colonial structures and French architecture during their occupation.

Colón was founded in 1850, and was originally called “Aspinwall” after one of the founders of the Panama Railroad. When the Panama railroad was finished in 1855, Colón boomed instantly, but its notoriety and busyness as a city faded after the U.S. transcontinental railroad project was abandoned. Colón then suffered a terrible economic depression.

The French began building the Panama Canal to connect the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. Later, they sold the canal to the United States, who finished building and updating the Panama Canal Zone—everything from housing to infrastructure to water systems—during the presidency of Theodore Roosevelt from 1904 to 1913. Fires in the late 1800s and mid-20th century devastated the city, and though it has since recovered, Colón is still in process of creating ways to share the city with the world.

Colon cruise port

Region Bahamas - Caribbean - Bermuda

Local Time 2024-04-13 21:49

Port Colon cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Colon, Panama. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Colon cruise port is located at the end of the Panama Canal (Caribbean Sea). The city is Panama's second-largest (population around 80,000/metro around 220,000) - after the capital Panama City .

On December 14, 2021, NCL-Norwegian Cruise Line announced that starts seasonally to homeport a ship in Panama City (for Panama Canal roundtrips) with Norwegian Jewel (starting on March 20, 2022).

  • The homeporting was based on a multi-year contract (signed with the Panama Tourism Authority) allowing NCL to homeport a liner at two Panamese cruise terminals - Colon and Fuerte Amador (Panama City, on the Pacific Ocean).
  • NCL Jewel's itineraries (starting from Panama City) visit Costa Rica ( Puerto Limon ), Aruba ( Oranjestad ), Curacao ( Willemstad ), Bonaire ( Kralendijk ), and Colombia ( Cartagena ), and end in Colon.

Port Colon (locode PAONX) is currently ranked the world's second-largest duty-free port (after Sanya China ). The Port was established in 1850 and since 1948 is a "Free Trade Zone" (freeport). Colon Free Trade Zone occupies land area approx 2,4 km2 (~243 hectares/600 acres) and is divided in two areas - the old one is in Colon City and the new one is in the harbor (where are the warehouses.

Originally, Colon was entirely on Manzanillo Island and surrounded by Manzanillo Bay, Limon Bay, and Folks River. However, since the disestablishment of the Panama Canal Zone (aka Canal Zone/November 1903 thru October 1979), its limits have been redefined to include Fort Gulick (former US Army Base), as well three former Canal Zone towns (Coco Solo, Cristobal, Margarita).

A restoration and reconstruction project, which involves historic buildings, monuments, parks and avenues started in late 2014. The First Baptist Church of Colon, Panama, is among the buildings whose renovation was completed.

Colon cruise terminal

Colon Cruise Terminal has two docks - "Colon 2000" and "Cristobal Pier".

Colon 2000 Cruise Terminal

Colon 2000 was constructed at the millennium’s turn. It is in the Province of Colon and its managers are a private company. They invested USD 15 million to develop the project for modern Colon cruise port piers and terminals. It has the greatest efficiency among all Central America’s seaports.

The first part of the project was ready in October 2000. The first Colon cruise Terminal and Pier’s name is “Port of Call.” Here are located the customs.

In February 2008 was developed the second Colon Cruise Port Terminal and Pier is the “Home Port.” It is in service since December 2008. The building has three gates separated for cargo, passengers and luggage.

Colon cruise port terminal building offers native craft boutiques, bar-cafe, lounge areas, duty-free mall, supermarket.

Cristobal Pier Cruise Terminal

The distance between Cristobal Pier and Colon 2000 is 5 km. The taxi rate for the 10-minute journey is $3 roughly. Colon cruise port terminal at Cristobal pier usually welcomes its guest with native dances right in the building. There is also a nice shopping area.

Panama's main tourist season runs between December and April. September, October, February and March usually are rainy months for Colon.

  • Duty Free Zone: The main attraction of Colon is the Free Zone. The shopping complex comprises ~1600 stores (wholesale and retail).
  • Festivals: Colon is famous with its festival in March, April and October. The most famous are the Festival of Diablos and Congos and the Festival of the Black Christ.
  • Beaches: the most famous one is Playa La Angosta. If you don’t like crowds, avoid Sundays.
  • Portobelo: an hour drive from Colon, visit the Customs House (UNESCO site).
  • Isla Grande: an hour from the city., resort are with hotels, restaurants, shops and water activities.
  • Barro Colorado Nature Preserve: national park in the Colon Province. It spreads over 5,364 hectares.
  • Soberania National Park: rain forest.
  • Portobelo National Park: visit coral reefs and mangrove forests. Meet the wildlife or see the fortifications (UNESCO sites).
  • Embera Quera Village: to reach the village, you have to drive ~25 minutes and then ride a canoe for ~20 minutes. The native village offers amazing time and local goods as carvings and baskets.

Panama - Panama City

Bristol panamá, minutes from many lively and leisurely attractions.

Maureen Mc.R.: “ The Bristol Panama. Very safe area. We stayed there because that is the hotel Windstar uses, although we didn’t book the hotel through Windstar. We stayed for 3 days before our sailing (February 2020). For a reasonable fee, they will arrange a ride from the airport and take you to the port in Colon (about a 45 min drive if I recall correctly). The restaurant has really good food and a big picture window. We walked around from the hotel there a lot, downtown and walked to their seaside. We like to explore. Also, lots of restaurants both sit down and fast food in the area.”

Considered one of the most elegant hotels in Panama City, The Bristol Hotel reflects Panama’s rich architectural heritage in an atmosphere of magnificent sophistication. Minutes from many lively and leisurely attractions, the hotel features well-appointed guestrooms, an outdoor swimming pool and solarium, a full-service spa, and an extraordinary culinary experience.

The classically decorated guestrooms are furnished with mahogany fixtures, custom fabrics, and display works by Latin American and Panamanian artists. The hotel has an exquisite variety of Panamanian cuisine, prepared using quality products, which are beautifully presented. Combined with The Bristol’s impeccable service, these elements make a lasting impression on guests to the Panamanian capital.

The Westin Panama is ideally situated in Costa del Este, a premium lifestyle development with corporate offices, real estate projects, and recreational areas. A few minutes from Towncenter Shopping Mall and Atrio Mall. Corredor Sur (Southern Corridor) connects this upscale area to downtown and the airport. American Trade Hotel and Hall

american trade exterior2 panama cruise port hotels

a vibrant yet intimate boutique hotel

The American Trade Hotel and Hall is a boutique luxury hotel and events space combining old world elegance with the clean, current design. It’s located in the most desirable area in Panama City: Casco Viejo , a UNESCO World Heritage site offering the best sight-seeing, dining, nightlife, destination weddings, corporate and social events, all combined with an authentic Panamanian cultural experience.

Of all the upscale options in Casco Viejo, the American Trade Hotel consistently shines brighter.  The property occupies a lovely restored 1917  building , and it stands at the ecological and cultural crossroads of the Americas, deeply connected to both the historic Old Quarter and the nascent new Panama City; a meeting place for influencers, creatives, and multi-international visionaries from around the world.

The property and surrounding area are steeped in local heritage and culture, while the hotel has been thoroughly retrofitted with every contemporary convenience and modern luxury that today’s discerning traveler needs.

American Trade Hotel and Event Hall offers luxurious rooms and suites, fine dining, the stylish Unido Café, the world-class Danilo’s Jazz Club, featuring live entertainment, as well as the elegant American Trade Hall Event Space, set aside in grandeur for the celebration of signature weddings, social exchanges, and corporate events in Casco Viejo, hands down Panama’s coolest neighborhood. This hotel is a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World.

If there’s any doubt that Panama City’s Casco Viejo has truly joined the ranks of the world’s hippest neighborhoods, maybe the advent of the American Trade Hotel & Hall will settle the matter once and for all. In Panama, a sort of urban renaissance is underway, centered around the town’s historic quarter, and the American Trade, for all its agenda-setting originality, is at its heart an extremely sensitive restoration project.

Call it “fictional” restoration. They’ve taken very good care of the buildings, the former American Trade department store and an adjacent commercial building, but rather than simply roll back the clock, Commune Design created a fictional backstory — that of a family-owned hotel that’s been in place for centuries. Over time, Panama being the crossroads that it is, such a hotel would naturally accumulate a wealth of eclectic influences. The result of this process of the invention is the hotel you see before you today.

Fifty rooms are the sweet spot for a vibrant yet intimate boutique hotel, and they’re a perfect mix of old and new: weathered wood, antique and modern furniture, retro colors, and occasional balconies alongside Frette linens, plasma screens, and throwback-style tiled bathrooms (albeit thoroughly modern in function).

For now, the lobby bar and the rooftop pool deck do an admirable job of seeing to the hotel’s socializing needs, but a restaurant, a café, and a jazz bar (under the direction of Panamanian jazz pianist Danilo Pérez) are in the works. In a hotel like this one, the social aspect is of equal importance to the rooms, if not greater — watch this space, as there’ll surely be more to come.

Panama - Colón-Panama City

Gamboa rainforest resort, a lovely eco-resort hotel.

Gamboa is a small town in the Republic of Panama. It was one of a handful of permanent Canal Zone townships, built to house employees of the Panama Canal and their dependents. The location is on a sharp bend of the Chagres River at the point that feeds Lake Gatun. Just south of Gamboa, Lake Gatun and the Chagres meet the Culebra Cut (Gaillard Cut), where the Canal cuts through the Continental Divide.

Gamboa is home to caimans, crocodiles, iguanas, and several hundred bird species. Given its location at the “end of the road” and the single road connecting it to the rest of the Canal Zone, Gamboa is adjacent to significant tracts of relatively undisturbed rainforest. A trail that follows an old pipeline (“Pipeline Road”) is considered one of the best birding hikes in Panama and one of the premier bird-watching sites in all of Central America.

Boasting views of the river, garden, or tropical style pool, the 137 guest rooms and 27 suites at Gamboa Rainforest Resort offer your own private sanctuary amidst the pristine natural beauty of Soberania National Park. With a rustic yet comfortable eco-lodge-style, all accommodation feature comforts that include complimentary Wi-Fi and 24-hour room service.

Locally inspired architecture and décor along with stunning views of the Panama Canal and Chagres River inspire the senses while soothing the spirit. With warm breezes and tropical birds singing over your room’s private balcony and hammock, it’s easy to lose yourself in the tranquility of Gamboa Rainforest Resort.

Nestled among lush gardens, the Deluxe Garden view rooms are perfect for travelers seeking comfort but not requiring the added space of a large balcony. It offers views of our tropical garden and the pool. The River view rooms include a private balcony with a lovely view of the Chagres River and the amazing Panamanian Rainforest. The rooms come with either two double beds or one king-size bed, an ample bathroom, designed with colorful tiles, and multiple services.

A luxury hotel in Panama where everything is at hand – beautifully equipped meeting rooms, a choice of dining, a wine bar plus a gym with state-of-the-art equipment and massage room that provides an oasis within this vibrant city.

Sleeping in a modern mixed-use skyscraper might not be what you had in mind when you first thought of a trip to a tropical destination like Panama. The concept does sound a little cold, especially since the Global Hotel Panama is one of those hotels that doesn’t occupy the whole building, just the ground level and six upper floors. But hear us out. This is one of the most popular hotels in Panama City. Not because it’s terribly cozy, or for the style, which is pleasant enough. It’s in other categories that the Global Hotel Panama really delivers: excellent service, solid amenities, and location, location, location.

That location, in the Twist Tower in the downtown district of Obarrio, puts you within walking distance, or a short taxi ride, of pretty much anywhere you’d like to go in town. Convenient, indeed, especially since many travelers experience

Panama City as a point of connection to somewhere else. You won’t be sorry you booked here when you arrive, overheated and exhausted, and the front desk staff offer you a flute of champagne or chilled mineral water. Things look even better when you get inside your room. The building itself is brand-new, and it looks and feels like it. Rooms and suites are spotless and state-of-the-art, smartly stocked with 40-inch LCD TVs, iPhone docking stations, Italian coffee machines, and bathrooms with walk-in showers. Floor-to-ceiling windows mean a flood of sunshine, and striking views over Panama City’s rapidly developing skyline. Suites have king-sized beds with pillow menus and marble baths with products by Salvatore Ferragamo.

Up on the twelfth floor, there’s a small outdoor swimming pool. Adjacent are the pool bar and the obligatory fitness center: choose your own adventure according to your mood and level of jet lag. You’ll find another bar on the ground level at the brasserie-style 54 East restaurant. If you’re in town for a longer than a night or two, you might take a quick course (and tasting) in Panamanian rum. But even if you’re only passing through before an early flight, you’ll want to plan ahead — you wouldn’t guess it from the outside, but the Global Hotel Panama has just sixty rooms, and they go fast.
