Bliss n Eso announce Flying Colours 15th Anniversary headline tour for October 2023
Illusive Presents and Frontier Touring are excited to bring legendary Australian hip-hop trio Bliss n Eso back to the stage in 2023 with their Flying Colours 15 th Anniversary Tour this October .
Celebrating 15 years of their iconic, ARIA Award winning, Platinum certified, top 10 Flying Colours album, the trio have had an illustrious career. Considered Australian hip-hop legends, with three No.1 albums and an extensive sweep of ARIA-certified Platinum and Gold singles, Bliss N Eso have truly earned their star status.
“Honestly, this album was such game changer for us and we’re so pumped to be hitting the road to celebrate its 15th anniversary with all our beloved fans. We are blessed to have had such an amazing career that is still as strong as ever and Flying Colours was truely such a pivotal point in our trajectory. Even when I play it today I can really hear that monumental shift in our sound and growth as artists. It’s rare these days that a body of work stands the test of time and still means so much to so many people. Even more than winning our first ARIA award with this album, it was the deep connection with our fans this album created that really spawned the fanbase we have today and that’s what means the most. There’s so many bangers on this record that are constantly requested but we rarely get to play live, so to break these bad boys out for the first time in years and let em rip all together is going to be INSANE. And of course to finally release this truly special album on vinyl for the FIRST TIME EVER is just the icing on the cake!” – Jonathan (MC Bliss of Bliss n Eso)
Following a huge 2022 touring up and down the country on not one but two Australian tours – The Sun Tour & Wheel Of Tunes Tour – Bliss n Eso will take on six huge new dates kicking off on Friday 6 October at Metropolis Fremantle , then heading to Adelaide on Saturday 7 October for a show at Hindley Street Music Hall , onto Melbourne’s 170 Russell on Friday 13 October , Hobart’s Uni Bar on Saturday 14 October , Sydney’s Metro Theatre on Friday 20 October before heading to The Tivoli in Brisbane for their final show of the tour on Saturday 21 October .
Frontier Members presale commences Tuesday 18 July from 10am local before the general public on sale kicks off Thursday 20 July from 10am local. Tickets via frontiertouring.com/blissneso

Bliss N Eso Announce 15th Anniversary Tour, Celebrating Milestone Album ‘Flying Colours’
Australian hip-hop legends Bliss N Eso are set to make a triumphant return to the stage in 2023 with their highly anticipated Flying Colours 15th Anniversary Tour. The tour marks a significant milestone for Bliss N Eso as they celebrate 15 years since the release of their iconic and critically acclaimed album – which you can listen to below to bring back some of that – much-loved – late 2000 nostalgia. The album, which received the prestigious certification in Australia, solidified Bliss N Eso’s position as trailblazers in the Australian hip-hop scene. With numerous top 10 hits and a string of Platinum and Gold singles, the trio has undeniably earned their star status ever since that 2008 release (and beyond).
The Flying Colours 15th Anniversary Tour promises to be a spectacular event, allowing Bliss N Eso to express their gratitude to their dedicated fanbase. The trio will perform the entire Flying Colours album, featuring chart-topping singles such as my favourites ‘ The Beginning ‘ ‘ Destiny Lane ‘, ‘ Climb The Cliffs ‘ and ETM’s personal album favourite ‘Gorilla Militia’. In addition to those hits, fans can expect electrifying performances of the trio’s biggest catalogue hits, with a few surprises in store.
“Honestly, this album was such game changer for us and we’re so pumped to be hitting the road to celebrate its 15th anniversary with all our beloved fans. Released via Flight Deck/Mushroom on Friday, November 3. This exclusive piece of Bliss N Eso memorabilia will serve as a timeless reminder of the album’s profound influence.

The Flying Colours 15th Anniversary Tour will start Friday, October 6 in Fremantle then heads to Adelaide, Melbourne, Hobart and Sydney before wrapping up in Brisbane on Saturday, October 21. The group will play the album in full at each of the dates, including the album’s hits ‘The Sea Is Rising’ and ‘Eye of the Storm’. Expect other hits from the trios back catalogue, too.

To coincide with the anniversary, the band will give ‘Flying Colours’ its first vinyl pressing. The limited-edition release will come in two editions on transparent red or gold wax. The new vinyl edition will be released via Flight Deck/Mushroom on Friday, November 3; pre-orders are available from Thursday, July 20 .
‘Flying Colours’ debuted at number 10 on the ARIA Albums Chart and reached number one on the Urban Albums Chart. At the 2008 ARIA Awards it took home the gong for Best Urban Release.
Unlike its previous albums – which had been recorded haphazardly whenever the group could secure studio time – ‘Flying Colours’ was the product of a dedicated three months of writing and recording, bunkered down in Melbourne, away from the distractions of their Sydney home. Its first single, ‘Bullet and a Target’ received major nationwide airplay; and its third, ‘Eye of the Storm’ took its riff from the Angus & Julia Stone track, ‘Paper Aeroplane’.
“Even when I play it today I can really hear that monumental shift in our sound and growth as artists,” says MC Bliss in a statement.

Even when I play it today I can really hear that monumental shift in our sound and growth as artists,” says Jonathan (MC Bliss of Bliss n Eso)
“It’s rare these days that a body of work stands the test of time and still means so much to so many people. And of course to finally release this truly special album on vinyl for the FIRST TIME EVER is just the icing on the cake!”
Frontier Members presale commences Tuesday 18 July from 10am local before the general public on sale kicks off Thursday 20 July from 10am local. Tickets here .

'I hid an NWA tape under my bed' Bliss N Eso on discovering hip hop and their 'fake rap' beginnings
- X (formerly Twitter)
MC Bliss – one half of Bliss N Eso , one of Australia's most enduringly popular hip hop groups – can vividly remember the first time he fell in love with the genre.
"The first song I heard was 'O.P.P.' by Naughty By Nature and it was on WPGC in [Washington] DC which is the big radio station that plays all the hip hop music."
Bliss, then just an American kid going by Jonathan Notley, couldn't afford to buy the 'O.P.P.' single. But he could get blank cassette tapes.
"I had to wait all day for this song to come on because I loved it. And I recorded it and recorded it, so it just looped," he told Tim Shiel on Double J Arvos. "Every time it came on I recorded it again and again.
"I have this vivid memory of standing on the baseball field with my Walkman… You know how smells [trigger] memories? It's fresh cut grass, listening to this song. That was the moment for me I just fell in love with hip hop."
In 2023, Bliss and his counterpart, Max 'Eso' McKinnon , are celebrating 15 years since the release of their breakthrough third album – the ARIA-winning, Hottest 100-debuting Flying Colours – with a reissue and upcoming national tour.
That, combined with current 50 years of hip hop celebrations , has the pair looking back. Way back.
"I was possibly six or seven years old. I was lucky enough to go over to the States to Los Angeles for a few trips with my parents," Eso said of his first time experiencing hip hop.
"We were on Venice Beach and my dad bought me one of those fluoro bloody yellow Walkmans." And what to play on it? Power Rap , a random compilation purchase.
"It had just a graffiti picture of a stereo on it – you couldn't' even tell what was on this tape until I was flying back from America on the plane back to Sydney. I was rapping the lyrics out loud… there were some swear words.
"It was Slick Rick and I was putting on Slick Rick's voice [mimicking] 'okay everybody let's all get down'. My mum was going 'what are you listening to!?' They kept trying to take that tape away from me – throw it in the fire or say they'd lost it. But every few years I'd find that tape in the house."
Bliss' folks were more extreme.
"My dad used to censor my records. When they finally clued into what I was listening [to] I had all my CDs taken off me. My dad literally sat down with the boom box and cassette recorder and he listened to every song and decided 'okay you can have this one, this one'.
He remembered there was a lot of Heavy D ("because he doesn't swear") and, much to Bliss' relief, a 2Pac track that slipped through the cracks.
"' Brenda's Got A Baby '… I fell in love with 2Pac on his second album and all my favourite songs were taken away from me and I had to do the sneaky and try and listen to them elsewhere.
"I remember I used to have an N.W.A. tape literally hidden under my bed. For my parents it was a Playboy or something, it was crazy."
The beginnings of Bliss N Eso
By the time Bliss emigrated from the US with his family in the early 1990s, he met and bonded with McKinnon over a shared love of rap on the first day of high school in Sydney's north shore.
"This is the point in Australia where hip hop was pretty much non-existent, especially the local scene. It was dominated by rock and pop out here. You'd got to a CD store you'd have to dig hard to maybe find an Ice Cube record or something like that – it was not around.
"And so at school, none of the kids were listening to hip hop… except this one guy named Max. And we became friends because we were both into hip hop."
Fans will be familiar with that part of the Bliss N Eso origin story but maybe not so much the bit where the group "started off a blatant lie" from Bliss to impress his new mate.
"One day I came to school – remember the song C&C Music Factory 'Everybody Dance Now' ? That had just come out in the States but it hadn't really blown up here yet. I knew the verse off by heart, this rapid-fire verse, and I spit it to Eso in the schoolyard and I told him I wrote it.
"He was like 'Woah, damn man' so he went away that night 'if this dude can write something, I can write something' he went home and he wrote a rap. He came to school the next day and he rapped what he had legitimately written it. I was like 'This guy, man. I lied to him and he's actually written a rap!' he made me think 'okay, I've gotta go home and write one'
"I did that, and that was our first rhymes. We started off basically me lying to him but it was that self-belief and encouragement that we could do it."
Memories of Flying Colours
In 2000, after filling out the line-up with DJ Izm , Bliss N Eso released their first music and played their first shows.
After mixed responses to their first two albums, Flowers In The Pavement (2004) and Day of the Dog (2006) Bliss N Eso had a creative and commercial breakthrough in 2008 with Flying Colours .
"Flying Colours felt like everything fell into place and we really started honing in in our sound," Bliss said. "We got a really cohesive body of work together and I think that reflects in the finished product."
Bliss remembered it being a huge turning point as their profile and popularity spiked.
"When we released it, I think we played a 1000-person venue – like The Metro in Sydney or the Corner in Melbourne. And by the end of that cycle, we did two tours of it, we were doing sold out Festival Hall [shows]. That was the growth."
Flying Colours won the ARIA Award for Best Urban Release while tracks like 'The Sea Is Rising', 'Woodstock 2008' and the Angus & Julia Stone sampling 'Eye of the Storm' cracked triple j's Hottest 100.
Of the latter track, Bliss recalled: "I think it was one of the first times a local Australian act had sampled something from a different genre within Australia, especially something current."
He remembers first hearing Angus & Julia Stone's 'Paper Aeroplane' while hanging out in a friend's kitchen. "And being like 'This is dope! What is this!?' I took it to our producer 'we should flip this sample' and that became 'Eye of the Storm'."
The pair have plenty of amazing memories from Flying Colours . Like the time they went to Africa and recorded a music video with a "21-piece African Zulu Choir, recording in mud huts in a village."
"It was a really special time and now to be coming back full circle, 15 years later, and to see how much interest is still there in this album. We've got 10 shows and seven are already sold out.
"It's crazy and a beautiful thing because the music [is] a part of the soundtrack to their lives, and everyone's got a different story about a particular song and what it means to them.
"It's just a beautiful thing to be able to connect through music to a stranger you've never met but have this thing in common. And then be able to celebrate that live on stage.
"We've been in the game for a minute. We did our first show in the year 2000 and before that obviously we were teens making songs on cassette tapes.
"So, it's incredible to see how far hip hop has come. We are blessed and so grateful to be part of this journey and helping build the story of what hip hop is."

Bliss N Eso expand 15th anniversary tour for Flying Colours
Kievskaya Station went public in March of 1937, the rails between it and Park Kultury Station being the first to cross the Moscow River. Kievskaya is full of mosaics depicting aristocratic scenes of Russian life, with great cameo appearances by Lenin, Trotsky, and Stalin. Each work has a Cyrillic title/explanation etched in the marble beneath it; however, if your Russian is rusty, you can just appreciate seeing familiar revolutionary dates like 1905 ( the Russian Revolution ) and 1917 ( the October Revolution ).
Mayakovskaya Station
Mayakovskaya Station ranks in my top three most notable Metro stations. Mayakovskaya just feels right, done Art Deco but no sense of gaudiness or pretention. The arches are adorned with rounded chrome piping and create feeling of being in a jukebox, but the roof’s expansive mosaics of the sky are the real showstopper. Subjects cleverly range from looking up at a high jumper, workers atop a building, spires of Orthodox cathedrals, to nimble aircraft humming by, a fleet of prop planes spelling out CCCP in the bluest of skies.
Novoslobodskaya Station
Novoslobodskaya is the Metro’s unique stained glass station. Each column has its own distinctive panels of colorful glass, most of them with a floral theme, some of them capturing the odd sailor, musician, artist, gardener, or stenographer in action. The glass is framed in Art Deco metalwork, and there is the lovely aspect of discovering panels in the less frequented haunches of the hall (on the trackside, between the incoming staircases). Novosblod is, I’ve been told, the favorite amongst out-of-town visitors.
Komsomolskaya Station
Komsomolskaya Station is one of palatial grandeur. It seems both magnificent and obligatory, like the presidential palace of a colonial city. The yellow ceiling has leafy, white concrete garland and a series of golden military mosaics accenting the tile mosaics of glorified Russian life. Switching lines here, the hallway has an Alice-in-Wonderland feel, impossibly long with decorative tile walls, culminating in a very old station left in a remarkable state of disrepair, offering a really tangible glimpse behind the palace walls.
Dostoevskaya Station
Dostoevskaya is a tribute to the late, great hero of Russian literature . The station at first glance seems bare and unimpressive, a stark marble platform without a whiff of reassembled chips of tile. However, two columns have eerie stone inlay collages of scenes from Dostoevsky’s work, including The Idiot , The Brothers Karamazov , and Crime and Punishment. Then, standing at the center of the platform, the marble creates a kaleidoscope of reflections. At the entrance, there is a large, inlay portrait of the author.
Chkalovskaya Station
Chkalovskaya does space Art Deco style (yet again). Chrome borders all. Passageways with curvy overhangs create the illusion of walking through the belly of a chic, new-age spacecraft. There are two (kos)mosaics, one at each end, with planetary subjects. Transferring here brings you above ground, where some rather elaborate metalwork is on display. By name similarity only, I’d expected Komsolskaya Station to deliver some kosmonaut décor; instead, it was Chkalovskaya that took us up to the space station.
Elektrozavodskaya Station
Elektrozavodskaya is full of marble reliefs of workers, men and women, laboring through the different stages of industry. The superhuman figures are round with muscles, Hollywood fit, and seemingly undeterred by each Herculean task they respectively perform. The station is chocked with brass, from hammer and sickle light fixtures to beautiful, angular framework up the innards of the columns. The station’s art pieces are less clever or extravagant than others, but identifying the different stages of industry is entertaining.
Baumanskaya Statio
Baumanskaya Station is the only stop that wasn’t suggested by the students. Pulling in, the network of statues was just too enticing: Out of half-circle depressions in the platform’s columns, the USSR’s proud and powerful labor force again flaunts its success. Pilots, blacksmiths, politicians, and artists have all congregated, posing amongst more Art Deco framing. At the far end, a massive Soviet flag dons the face of Lenin and banners for ’05, ’17, and ‘45. Standing in front of the flag, you can play with the echoing roof.
Ploshchad Revolutsii Station
Novokuznetskaya Station
Novokuznetskaya Station finishes off this tour, more or less, where it started: beautiful mosaics. This station recalls the skyward-facing pieces from Mayakovskaya (Station #2), only with a little larger pictures in a more cramped, very trafficked area. Due to a line of street lamps in the center of the platform, it has the atmosphere of a bustling market. The more inventive sky scenes include a man on a ladder, women picking fruit, and a tank-dozer being craned in. The station’s also has a handsome black-and-white stone mural.
Here is a map and a brief description of our route:
Start at (1)Kievskaya on the “ring line” (look for the squares at the bottom of the platform signs to help you navigate—the ring line is #5, brown line) and go north to Belorusskaya, make a quick switch to the Dark Green/#2 line, and go south one stop to (2)Mayakovskaya. Backtrack to the ring line—Brown/#5—and continue north, getting off at (3)Novosblodskaya and (4)Komsolskaya. At Komsolskaya Station, transfer to the Red/#1 line, go south for two stops to Chistye Prudy, and get on the Light Green/#10 line going north. Take a look at (5)Dostoevskaya Station on the northern segment of Light Green/#10 line then change directions and head south to (6)Chkalovskaya, which offers a transfer to the Dark Blue/#3 line, going west, away from the city center. Have a look (7)Elektroskaya Station before backtracking into the center of Moscow, stopping off at (8)Baumskaya, getting off the Dark Blue/#3 line at (9)Ploschad Revolyutsii. Change to the Dark Green/#2 line and go south one stop to see (10)Novokuznetskaya Station.
