One Tremendous Night Out – The 60’s Gold Tour
Oct 19, 2022 | Review Beat
Once again an all-star lineup is doing the rounds and will please 60’s fans everywhere…
REVIEW by Ian Woolley
Billed as the Sixties Gold ‘The All Hits Show’, once again promoters Robert Pratt and Alan Field keep it simple with tried and tested acts that are well versed in keeping their audiences happy.
A near-full Bournemouth Pavilion was where I caught up with the show which started on 11th October. With four dates under their belt already, the show worked smoothly. The 2002 tour has been trimmed to 30 dates and will end on 27th November in Edinburgh.
With the introduction on stage from Ally Bally welcoming the audience, the first up was Spencer James (Searchers) with his band. Backing him was The three-piece 60’s Explosion, consisting of Tony Carey, Graham Clowe, and Richie Burns. All the hits were there – “ Needles and Pins ”, “ Don’t Throw Your Love Away ”, “ Sweets For My Sweets ” and “ When You Walk In The Room “. Spencer hinted that next year he may be joined by former Searchers John McNally and Frank Allen. We’ll have to wait and see on that one.
Next up was Gerry’s Pacemakers. Since their lead singer Gerry Marsden retired in 2018, keyboardist and singer Tony Young has carried on his legacy. An able replacement for Gerry is their new charismatic frontman Rob Lineacre. These days they are joined by John Summerton, Darren Tingey, and pork-pie-wearing drummer Rick Medlock. “ I’m The One “, “ Don’t Let The Sun Catch You Crying ” (dedicated to Marsden by Tony beforehand), “ How Do You Do It? “, “ I Like It “, “ Ferry ‘Cross The Mersey ” and the last number “ You’ll Never Walk Alone “.
Gary Puckett at the Pavilion 2022 (credit Quiz Britain)
With the band supporting the next act up, Gary Puckett, sometimes gremlins can occur when your change around time is tried to keep to a minimum. As Gary walked on dressed in his familiar US Confederate cape, their first number “ Lady Willpower ” left out the accompanying backing guitars. This meant that only the keyboard and the vocals could be heard but Gary Puckett, being the true professional he is, carried on regardless. Next up was “ Over You ” and a cover of Manfred Mann’s “ Mighty Quinn “.
Mentioning that Melody Radio’s most requested song was his “ Woman, Woman “, off came his cape to belt out the classic. Dedicated to Roy Orbison, his tribute to the singer was the ever-popular “ Pretty Woman “. His final number was his only UK chart-topper “Young Girl” and after the first standing ovation of the evening, announced he would be in the foyer at the break to sign his merchandise.
His voice is still as powerful as it ever was and the audience’s appreciation showed he still has that sex appeal. After Puckett had left the stage, Ally Bally announced that it would be Gary’s 80th birthday the following Monday.
Barry Whitwam at the Pavilion (credit Ian Woolley)
Herman’s Hermits started off the second set with original drummer Barry Whitwam who has been in the band since they were formed in 1964. “ I’m Into Something Good ” and “ Wonderful World “. Barry came center stage to tell the audience about the time he met Elvis Presley on the day they were meant to come back to England after their US tour. You need to see the show yourself if you’d like to know what happened. With so many hits down the years, “ No Milk Today “, “Sunshine Girl”, “ My Sentimental Friend ” and “ There’s A Kind Of Hush ” were all there to keep the crowd happy along with band members Geoff Foot, Tony Hancox, and Jamie Thurston. Jamie’s rendition of “ Mrs. Brown, You’ve Got a Lovely Daughter” complete with a mock Peter Noone Manchurian accent was a highlight.
Ally came back on stage to announce there was a 96-year-old fan in the audience and had everyone singing happy birthday.
Alan and Sandy at the Pavilion (credit Quiz Britain)
Marmalade was the first Scottish group to top the UK charts and during the late ’60s and early ’70s, provided us with clever pop songs with great harmonies.
The longest-serving member of the group is Sandy Newman and of late his joined by son John James Newman. Other members are Jan Robinson, Chris North and the zany Alan Holmes. “ Rainbow “, “ Lovin’ Things ”, “ Reflections of My Life ”, “ Falling Apart at The Seams ”, “ Wait For Me Mary-Anne ” and “ Radancer ” were excellent in their delivery.
Finishing with the Lennon & McCartney composed No1 smash hit “ Ob-la-Di Ob-la-Da ”, and the madcap moment and highlight for me of the whole evening was Alan Holmes’s trademark cartwheel in front of the stage which brought out applause and cheers from all those who witnessed it. The band always looks like they are enjoying playing and it comes across this throughout their set.
The Hawkes at the Pavilion (credit Quiz Britain)
Last on was the Tremeloes but sadly no Len ‘Chip’ Hawkes as advertised (due to ill health). So the group’s current lineup these days features son Chesney Hawkes (who had solo success himself in the 1980s), his 16-year-old son Indi, brother Jodie, and Al Vosper and Martin Kennedy.
Selling in excess of 100 Million records worldwide during their chart success, the hits chosen were “ Me And My Life “, “ Suddenly You Love Me ”, “ Even The Bad Times Are Good ”, “ Here Comes My Baby ” (with audience whistling encouraged) and “ (Call Me) Number One ”. A family dedication to dad Chip with a song that his father wrote when he met his wife-to-be – “ My Little Lady “. Chesney’s wit when he sang the opening line of his 80’s No.1 “ The One and Only” pleased the crowd.
“That’s all your going to get” he announced.
On their last number (former chart-topper) “ Silence Is Golden ” you couldn’t hear a pin drop throughout the theatre. Excellent harmonising by all five members and very true to the original sound. ‘Chip’ can sleep easier these days knowing that his group is in good hands. The confident and charismatic lead singer has matured into making the next generation of the Tremeloes an easy one. Even when the bad times are good!
With Marmalade meeting the fans afterward in the foyer, the audience went home happy, including their 96-year-old attendee!
Don’t miss this great musical trip down that 60’s memory lane. It’s a ‘trem’ endous night out!

Dierks Bentley announces extension of 'Gravel & Gold' tour with a summer Nashville stop
D ierks Bentley announced over 30 new dates for an upcoming extension of the "Gravel & Gold" Tour, a summer tour that will bring him to Nashville. On Sept. 9, Bentley will hit the stage at Bridgestone Arena with opener Chase Rice.

“The 'Gravel & Gold' tour has been the best of my career, and I’m not ready to leave it behind,” said Bentley.
“We are so locked in with this production that it allows me to be living right in the moment with the fans, and that’s the magic! I’m bringing along some old friends and some newer artists who are all putting their own unique spin on country, bluegrass and Americana music. I can’t wait to watch their shows and hopefully sing with them too. Those collaborations are a highlight of my summer every year."
Fans can buy tickets to the upcoming tour, produced by Live Nation, starting this Friday, Feb. 16 at 10 a.m. CST at Dierks.com .
