Infinite Voyage
After 47 years of award-winning music-making, the Emerson String Quartet will disband in October 2023 and will release their final album Infinite Voyage on September 8 with soprano, Barbara Hannigan. The album evokes the lifelong journey for the four musicians and their lasting friendship with Hannigan. Joined by Bertrand Chamayou, the record features Schoenberg's Quartet No. 2 for soprano and string quartet alongside works by Hindemith, Berg, and Chausson's Chanson perpétuelle.
About the Album
The title of this album evokes not only the life-long journey of all these musicians, but also a lasting friendship between soprano Barbara Hannigan and the Emerson String Quartet. One of the greatest string quartets of the last four decades, the Emersons will disband in October 2023. Barbara and the Emersons were determined to record Schoenberg's Quartet No. 2 since they started performing the work together in 2015. "The sheer sonic scope of this work takes us on a voyage into previously uncharted territory" say the Emerson musicians. "It's like a tall, gnarly tree to climb (all the way to another planet, it seems), yet one with deep and emotional roots", continues Barbara Hannigan. "The soprano’s fin-de- siècle primal scream at the end of the 3rd movement, begging to be relieved of love, is a heavy hitter". Melancholie is a rare and intimate work by the young Hindemith, "a gem of a piece" that the Canadian soprano has wanted to explore for many years. The fascinating Quartet Op. 3, composed by Berg in 1909 as he was finishing his apprenticeship with Schoenberg, features the quartet on its own. And to round out the album, pianist Bertrand Chamayou joins Barbara and the Emersons for another deeply moving encounter by way of Chausson's heartbreaking Chanson perpétuelle.
Track Listing
1. String Quartet No. 2 in F sharp Minor, Op. 10 Arnold Shoenberg (b. 1874-1951) 2. Melancholie , Op. 13 Paul Hindemith (1895-1963) 3. Chanson perpétuelle , Op. 37 Ernest Chausson (1855-1899) 4. String Quartet, Op. 3 Alban Berg (1885-1935)
The playing [on Infinite Voyage] and at the Sunday concert proved that the Emersons are saying farewell at the height of their powers. There have been other great string quartets in the recording era, with their own special virtues. But for influence and renown, none surpassed the Emersons... Their legacy will last far into the future.
The Emerson Quartet could hardly have chosen a more appropriate composition to encapsulate the special achievements as well as the endless challenges of their chosen medium.
..the Emerson’s close-knit delineation of the massed shards of motivic elements the music throws out in its quest for transcendence... The Emersons come to the score as if it were new, hot from the press, and in doing so they recreate the sense of inordinate extravagance that made early audiences so uneasy.
Everyone’s golden hour comes in Schoenberg’s vocally enhanced String Quartet No 2. It’s not usually considered easy listening, though the Emerson polish, Hannigan’s penetrating beam and a vibrant recording swiftly emphasise the more beguiling aspects of a work...the recording makes each pizzicato note something you feel in your stomach. They are a class act and will be missed.
...the Emersons give both works warm, lustrous performances... Barbara Hannigan is the soprano in the Schoenberg, her elegance and cool, precise shaping of every phrase perfectly tailored to the keenly expressive vocal lines.
It is an ambivalent reflection, like a Magritte painting of front and back, imbued with a sorrowful and melancholic lyricism that looks Tristanesque and that the Emersons capture to perfection; in each note, each silence and pause they give an overwhelming totality.

Emerson String Quartet: Infinite Voyage review – leading quartet bid farewell with Schoenberg and Berg
Hannigan/Chamayou/Emerson String Quartet (Alpha) This wonderful parting gift from the quartet features warm lustrous performances of Schoenberg’s Second Quartet (with soprano Barbara Hannigan) and Berg’s opus 3, plus two beautifully rendered rarities by Hindemith and Chausson
N ext month, after more than four decades as one of the world’s leading string quartets, the Emerson Quartet will give their final concerts. Their last disc before they go their separate ways is built around one of the cornerstones of the 20th-century quartet repertoire, a work they had never recorded before. Schoenberg’s Second Quartet is remarkable not only for including settings for soprano of poems by Stefan George in its final two movements, but also as the piece in which he took his first tentative steps into the unknown world of atonality, even though in its closing bars the music returns to the safety of F sharp major.
Alban Berg’s Op 3 Quartet, completed in 1910, two years after his teacher Schoenberg’s Second but not published until 10 years later, makes a logical companion piece, and the Emersons give both works warm, lustrous performances, more generous than many of their earlier, more objective recordings. Barbara Hannigan is the soprano in the Schoenberg, her elegance and cool, precise shaping of every phrase perfectly tailored to the keenly expressive vocal lines, though the recording seems to place her voice just a bit too far forward in the audio picture.
There’s also room on the disc for a couple of beautifully rendered rarities, both unearthed by Hannigan. Hindemith’s Melancholie sets four poems by Christian Morgenstern for soprano and quartet; it was composed during the last years of the first world war, when Hindemith’s music was much closer to the expressionist world of the Second Viennese School than to his own later neoclassicism. But the real discovery is Chausson’s Chanson Perpétuelle, a setting for soprano, quartet and piano (Bertrand Chamayou here) of a poem of abandoned love by Charles Cros, which though less than eight minutes long seems to encapsulate a whole world of tragedy with operatic intensity.

Schoenberg is also the focus of Transfiguration , the latest Chandos disc from the Kaleidoscope Chamber Collective , on which they are joined by the soprano Francesca Chiejina. The original string sextet version of Verklärte Nacht, in a nicely expansive, supple performance, provides that focus, alongside Alexander Zemlinsky’s Maiblumen blühten Überall, settings for soprano and quartet of poems by Richard Dehmel (also the author of the poem on which Verklärte Nacht is based), Anton Webern’s early piano quintet and a group of songs by Alma Mahler , arranged for soprano and string sextet by Tom Poster. It’s a thoughtfully linked collection, beautifully presented.

Eugene Drucker, violinist with the Emerson String Quartet, notes in the CD booklet that this is the quartet’s final album after a 47-year career. If so, then it is a sad day for music lovers who have marvelled at the continued excellence of this stellar ensemble. The quartet’s membership has largely remained unchanged since they formed in 1976 in New York City. Violist Guillermo Figueroa, Jr. left in 1977, and cellist Eric Wilson in 1979. In 2013, the renowned British cellist Paul Watkins replaced cellist David Finckel after his 34-year run.
The ensemble’s repertoire has been broad, as reflected in their discography, from works of Haydn and Mozart to Bartók and Shostakovich, some of which are complete cycles. Here they present works that they have not previously recorded, to my knowledge. They are joined by soprano Barbara Hannigan, no stranger to music lovers, especially in contemporary music. She has palpable rapport with the Emersons: they have performed at least most of these works together over the years. The distinguished pianist Bertrand Chamayou joins them for Chausson’s Chanson perpétuelle . The title of the disc, Infinite Voyage , is not explained, but could certainly refer to Drucker’s comment that their musical journey has been inspiring for all of them. Hannigan indicates as much in her remarks also included in the booklet.
An air of sorrow prevails over the selections on this programme, none more so than in Hindemith’s early Melancholie . He composed it in memory of his friend Karl Köhler, who died on the Western Front in 1918, according to Nicolas Derny’s lucid CD notes. The piece uses four poems from a collection of Christian Morgenstern, also entitled Melancholie , that deals with the devastation of World War I. The third song, Dunkler Tropfe , with its funeral march rhythm, is particularly moving. I doubt any listener would recognize the music as Hindemith’s. They sound nothing like the neoclassical composer most familiar to fans of his early period. This even earlier composition is redolent of late Romanticism, and has more in common with early Schoenberg. Melancholie has been recorded only a few times, but it is thanks to Hannigan that it is included here. She indicates in her note that she had been carrying around the score for years, just waiting for the right time to record it. With the Emersons she found it, when she brought it to their attention. The result is compelling. Her range of expression and dynamics suits the poetry well, and her diction is impeccable. The balance between voice and ensemble appears ideal. For me, this work alone is worth the price of the disc.
Chausson’s Chanson perpétuelle , on the other hand, has received many recordings. It seems to be a favourite among singers of the standard French vocal repertoire. One might question its inclusion here among the Germanic pieces of the twentieth century, but it clearly fits in with the theme of death. Hannigan’s account compares well with those of such French singers as Véronique Gens (on Alpha) and Sandrine Piau (on Saphir). Pianist Bertrand Chamayou and the Emersons, fully in step with Hannigan, capture the essence of this music.
The two string quartets are staples of the Second Viennese School. Surprisingly, the Emerson Quartet never recorded them before. I have sometimes preferred Berg’s music over Schoenberg’s, but here it is the other way around. Both are early works in the careers of their composers. I have always found the Berg Quartet intractable. (It is the only piece on the disc not involving the soprano.) The definitive account up to now, I think, has been that of the eponymous Alban Berg Quartett on EMI/Warner. The Emerson Quartet’s performance seems every bit its equal. It is played with even greater intensity and presence, though it has not really changed my opinion of the work.
Schoenberg’s Second String Quartet has the unusual distinction of a soprano soloist in its last two movements. Nicolas Derny recounts the story about the young artist Richard Gerstl who painted portraits of the Schoenberg family and then had an affair with the composer’s wife; that may have influenced the work’s final two movements. Schoenberg set them to poems of Stefan George, a sorrowful Litany and Transcendence which looks forward to a new world. The quartet has a rather standard structure, unlike Schoenberg’s First Quartet. While chromatic, it is only partially atonal, and concludes positively on an F-sharp major chord. The scherzo second movement contains a distorted version of the song O du lieber Augustin that adds a bit of humour. The third movement begins with a beautiful, yearning theme that regrettably never returns exactly in the same way. The movement ends, as Hannigan notes, with “a fin-de-siècle primal scream”. Hannigan inhabits the poetry; her voice soars powerfully there and more coolly in the finale. For some, the classic LaSalle Quartet recording with Margaret Price (on Deutsche Grammophon) has led the field, but the Emerson Quartet and Hannigan surpass the earlier account both as a performance and as a digital recording.
I cannot think of a more fitting way to wish the Emerson String Quartet farewell, if indeed this is to be their last new recording. Alpha have done their part, too, with outstanding sound and an informative booklet filled with colour photos of the artists.

Info for Infinite Voyage
After 47 years of award-winning music-making, the Emerson String Quartet will disband in October 2023 and will release their final album Infinite Voyage on September 8 with soprano, Barbara Hannigan. The album evokes the lifelong journey for the four musicians and their lasting friendship with Hannigan. Joined by Bertrand Chamayou, the record features Schoenberg's Quartet No. 2 for soprano and string quartet alongside works by Hindemith, Berg, and Chausson's Chanson perpétuelle. “I breathe in the air of other planets.” It’s with these words of German poet Stefan George, put to music in the “String Quartet No. 2 Op. 10,” that Arnold Schönberg takes leave from Western tonal harmony. Composed from 1907 to 1908 during a very painful period of his life, marked by the composer’s separation from Mathilde Zemlinsky, the work signifies a turning point in the history of European composition. As the centrepiece of the moving Infinite Voyage , this farewell music certainly wasn’t chosen at random by the legendary Emerson String Quartet, as the New Yorkers present us with their last album before retiring after 47 years of loyal and dedicated service.
For the occasion, the quartet called upon a longtime accomplice, the marvelous Canadian soprano Barbara Hannigan, who had long been separated from this type of repertoire. Together, they pursue their exploration of Germanic repertoire with Paul Hindemith’s very beautiful early work “Melancholie Op. 13,” a completed cycle of melodies from Ernest Chausson’s postromantic “Chanson perpétuelle” (with Bertrand Chamayou on the piano), and with Alban Berg’s “String Quartet No.3.” On the theme of collaboration, Infinite Voyage delights the listener with its vibrant and harrowing sensuality, in which the bond between the singer and the quartet is clearly heard. They are the ideal performers of music of such mysterious complexity. For the Emerson Quartet, we couldn’t imagine a better farewell opus. © Pierre Lamy/Qobuz

Infinite Voyage
The Emerson Quartet has been active for 47 years, during which it became one of the world’s leading string quartets with a recorded catalogue that covers almost all the standard repertoire in often unbeatable performances. But as the Emersons prepared to retire in the autumn of 2023, this album was set to be their last. Choosing the repertoire to bow out on, however, was not easy, as violinist Philip Setzer tells Apple Music Classical. “We thought about Mozart but couldn’t agree what. So we ended up with something very different.” And indeed it is—it’s a recording that’s off-piste, exploratory, and involves friends of the Quartet to join in as collaborative artists. At its heart is Schoenberg’s Quartet No. 2, which pulls into its textures a soprano (here, the charismatic Barbara Hannigan), alongside other works from roughly the same early-20th century Austro-German culture, including Berg’s String Quartet, Op. 3, and another, almost-unknown piece by Hindemith for quartet and soprano called Melancholie. But then there’s a surprising shift in soundworlds, back to the French fin de siècle with Chausson’s equally unknown Chanson perpétuelle, a keyboard quintet featuring pianist Bertrand Chamayou. Why choose this music to go out on? One answer is that the players are fascinated by it and deliver it with passionate commitment, relishing the way “small gestures are invested with a great deal of expressive meaning”, as violinist Eugene Drucker says of the Schoenberg. But another answer lies in the collective sense of passing and renunciation that holds all these works together. “They come steeped,” says Drucker, “in a sense of transition from one era of aesthetics to another,” surrendering the old language of Romanticism to the new of atonality. Involving loss, regret but also a desire to move on, it reflects what Philip Setzer calls the “bittersweetness of the recent months of farewell concerts”, adding that “although it’s sad, it’s not all loss.” Things end, things start: the cycle of existence.

Pianist Bertrand Chamayou and the Emersons, fully in step with Hannigan, capture the essence of this music. The two string quartets are staples of the Second Viennese School. Surprisingly, the Emerson Quartet never recorded them before. I have sometimes preferred Berg's music over Schoenberg's, but here it is the other way around.
