Best Times To Visit Savannah

The best time to visit Savannah is from March to July when warm temperatures coax the tree leaves and azalea blooms out of hibernation. A cache of festivals also fill this high season, though because the weather is ideal, hotel rates may be on the pricey side. Late winter – January and February – is low season, and the drop in temperatures comes with a drop in hotel rates. Shoulder season (mid-September to mid-November) is a sweet spot in Savannah tourism: The summer crowds clear (along with the sweltering temps) and lodging prices take a dip before the busy holiday season hits.

The Best Times to Visit Savannah For Good Weather, Fewer Crowds, and Lower Prices

And when to spot the Southern city's blooming azaleas, too.

best time to visit savannah in the spring

The historic architecture and palpable charm of Savannah, Georgia, make it one of the most beautiful cities in the South. Live oaks dripping in Spanish moss loom over stately town squares, and a thriving culinary scene draws foodies from around the country. Thanks to its coastal location, Savannah has a consistently mild (if humid) climate, but the weather fluctuations that do exist help dictate its tourist seasons, which are as follows.

  • High Season: March to July
  • Shoulder Season: August to December
  • Low Season: January to February

Spring brings azalea blooms and the lion's share of tourists, but don't overlook the shoulder season, says Amanda Marks, a Les Clefs d’Or concierge at Thompson Savannah . “I love our fall weather, and recommend coming to Savannah in November before Thanksgiving."

Keep reading for more details on the best times to visit Savannah for fantastic weather, smaller crowds, lower prices, and more.

Best Times to Visit Savannah for Smaller Crowds

“In my 20 years living here, I’ve found that Savannah is most crowded in spring (March, April, and May) and fall (September, October, and early November),” Marks says. So if you’re looking to admire Georgian homes or amble down River Street with fewer people around, consider booking your trip in January or February. Marks says that January is the quietest month in terms of travelers, but that some attractions may be closed this time of year, too.

Summer is another less-busy season, though it also brings challenging weather. Temperatures around 90 degrees Fahrenheit are common in July and August, and humidity is usually sky-high, too. If you can tolerate that — or if the main goal for your trip is simply to enjoy the city's delightful (and air-conditioned) restaurants and nearby beaches — a summer visit may be worth considering, since it'll likely reward you with smaller-than-average crowds.

Best Times to Visit Savannah for Good Weather

The best weather in Savannah comes in spring and fall. Temperatures range from the high 50s to the mid-80s from March to June, when trees and flowers — most notably, azaleas — come into bloom and adorn the city with lush hues of green and pink. Prepare for a spring visit by packing layers, including a rain jacket or umbrella. “Nearly every afternoon, at around 3 p.m., it will rain for 30 to 40 minutes,” Marks says. But don’t let a little rain deter you. “Savannah is beautiful during and right after the rain. When the Spanish moss is draped with raindrops, it sparkles in the sun,” she explains.

If you can’t swing an early spring trip, Perry Lane Hotel staffer and lifelong Savannah resident Mandy Heldreth says to aim for June. You might squeeze in a visit just before the higher temperatures and humidity arrive, which tends to be in July and August.

The autumn portion of Savannah’s shoulder season, from mid-September to mid-November, is another time to find travel-friendly weather. Heldreth says that this is when “the city begins to cool off” again, with daytime temps in the low 70s.

Best Times to Visit Savannah for Lower Prices

Unsurprisingly, the limited demand seen in Savannah’s off-season translates to lower prices on accommodations. “When visiting in the off-season — before President’s Day, during the summer, or from November through the end of the year — more savings can be had," says Marks, "and exploring the city may be more enjoyable and easier to navigate with less foot traffic around." Try visiting at these less-popular times for a deal on the great hotels that showcase Savannah's Southern hospitality.

Off-peak months like January and November can also bring discounted airfare — though there's a chance you can snag a deal on flights at any time of year. Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport is served by several budget carriers, including Allegiant , which connects the city to nearly a dozen major and not-so-major airports (Appleton, Wisconsin, anyone?) across the country. Though you'll have to pack light and watch out for hidden fees, these airlines can be a great way to get to Savannah for the lowest price possible.

Best Times to Visit Savannah for Events and Festivals

Like Charleston and other Southern cities, Savannah hosts many events and festivals in the spring and fall, when the weather is at its best. “St. Patrick’s Day is considered a holiday in Savannah,” Marks says, “and while many attractions and tours are closed, we do have a fantastic parade to watch and enjoy.” Music and art are also a large part of local culture — the city is home to Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), after all — and spring celebrations include the Savannah Music Festival and the SCAD Sidewalk Arts Festival . “The art students gather in Forsyth Park and draw on the sidewalks, creating beautiful masterpieces for everyone to enjoy,” Marks says of the latter.

In September, Savannah Jazz Festival’s live performances are held at Lucas Theatre, the Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum, and Forsyth Park over the course of a week. October has its own set of events and festivals, too, including SCAD Savannah Film Festival , Savannah Pride , and the Savannah Greek Festival . Plus, it's a great time to enjoy the city's famous spooky side .

Worst Times to Visit Savannah

Though it's more affordable and less crowded, summer in Savannah isn't ideal for most travelers, given the sweltering temperatures and oppressive humidity found in July and August. Unless you love heat, it's best to avoid visiting during this stretch. Also on the subject of weather, it's smart to note that hurricane season runs from June to November. Though Savannah isn't as vulnerable to tropical storms as much of the southeast (thanks to the sharp inward curve the coastline takes just north of the city), a direct or indirect hit is always possible — and it may be a risk some travelers would prefer to avoid.

Spring is generally regarded as the best season to visit the city, but if you're more interested in affordability than perfect weather, you may want to bypass the pricey peak period. The off-season months of January and February are some of the most affordable of the year, and though they won't be warm and sunny, they won't be ice-cold either — winter temperatures rarely dip below 40 degrees.

Savannah In The Spring

Mossy trees and the old Cotton Exchange as seen from Bay Street, Savannah.

Spring is an especially good time to visit Savannah, and undoubtedly the most popular season with tourists. The weather is generally warm and sunny without the oppressive heat of summer, and in the early weeks of spring, Savannah’s trees and shrubs are laden with beautiful flowers.

Many of the biggest festivals and events are held in spring. Savannah’s world-famous St Patrick’s Day celebrations draw large crowds to the city. Outside of St Patrick’s Day, several music festivals bring large numbers of people; Savannah’s springtime house and garden tours are also popular.

If you don’t mind spending a little more on accommodation and transport or risking longer lines for some restaurants and attractions, this is probably the best time of year to visit the city.

If you want to see Savannah’s shrubs and flowers at their peak, March through April is the best time of year to visit. Azaleas start blooming in March (sometimes as early as late February) and other flowering species follow in the weeks after. Savannah’s squares and parks, and Bonaventure Cemetery, are particularly beautiful at this time of year.

Savannah Weather In Spring

Throughout spring, Savannah is mostly sunny and warm, becoming hot by the last weeks of May: temperatures average 70°F (20°C) in March, going into the high 70s (25°C) in April and reaching the mid 80s (30°C) in May. Overall, April is probably about the best month to visit, weather-wise, with the longest sunshine hours of the year, but before the temperatures climb too high.

Rainfall is fairly consistent across the spring months, before rising sharply from June, staying high through the summer. March to May, rainfall averages around 3-3.5 inches per month. If you are staying more than a few days, there is a good chance it will rain at least once, but a completely dry stay is also possible.

If this is the sort of weather you most enjoy, but a springtime visit isn’t going to work, travel in fall instead, when it is warm, sunny and much drier than the summer months. You won’t get to enjoy the flowers of spring, but there are many festivals and events, particularly food-related, to compensate.

St Patrick’s Day In Savannah

If you are planning to visit in March, you need to be aware of Savannah’s St Patrick’s Day celebrations, whether to plan for it or to plan around it.

The parade is a huge annual draw for visitors to Savannah, and hotel and accommodation prices rise accordingly! Plan on spending considerably more for your accommodation in Savannah over the few days around St Patrick’s Day than you would at most other times of year.

The St Patrick’s Day Parade (usually on March 17), Savannah’s annual St Patrick’s Day celebration is probably its most famous event, when the city hosts one of the biggest parades in the country. The parade attracts a boisterous (and in some cases intoxicated) crowd and much of the city is given over to the festivities. If this isn’t your thing, choose another time to visit.

Other Irish-themed events, including the “Greening of the Fountain” in Forsyth Park, and the sister St Patrick’s Day Parade at the nearby seafront town of Tybee Island, are held in the week or so beforehand.

When booking accommodation for a visit around mid-March, give especial attention to the rate you are paying on each day of your stay; if you’re not that interested in St Patrick’s, you can save a lot by bringing your trip forwards or backwards by only a day or two.

If you do want to visit during this period, and particularly during the few days of the St Patrick’s Day events, you will usually need to book your accommodation many months in advance, as the more desirable places will sell out fast.

Spring Festivals & Events

For St Patrick’s Day, see above

Savannah Stopover, early March. This music festival features dozens of bands and artists, playing concerts across several Historic District locations.

Savannah Music Festival, late March to early April. The largest music festival in Georgia is held in Savannah each spring, with over 100 artists giving concerts and performances at locations across the city during the more than two weeks of the festival.

North of Gwinnett Street Tour of Hidden Gardens, mid to late April. Self-guided walking tours, organized by the Garden Club of Savannah, take in several private gardens not normally open to the public.

Why Spring is the Perfect Time to Visit Savannah

Why Spring

There’s something so magical about spring in Savannah. The skies are clear, the flowers are blooming in vibrant colors, and it’s hard to find a reason to stay indoors . For the spring months, Savannah is at its absolute best, which is why so many people come to visit during that time. From March to early May you will see why spring is the perfect time to visit Savannah.

Comfortable, Sunny Weather

Spring is that golden time when the weather is at that perfect temperature before it begins to heat up and humidify in summer. Temperatures are steady in the lower and upper 70s throughout March and April, and begin to climb up starting mid-May. We do see a handful of rainy days in the spring, but most times it clears up that same day or by the next day. And if you do get stuck with rainy April showers, just remember the old saying and know that more May flowers are just around the corner.

Colorful Flowers Everywhere

It’s most likely that the flowers are already in full bloom well before May rolls around. Our famous azalea bloom begins in early March—sometimes even as early as late February—and lasts through early May. These colorful beauties can be seen all over Savannah’s historic district, as well as big Forsyth Park and sleepy Bonaventure Cemetery. Plus, other flowers like camellias and dogwoods are also popular in the historic district, and create a dreamy backdrop for your stroll around Savannah.

Festivals, Parades, Adventure

When the weather is nice we take full advantage of it, which means that spring is one of our busiest times of year for fun, outdoor activities. Of course, our St. Patrick’s Day is the most popular with green fountains, an annual parade and downtown celebrations. But we also welcome the annual Savannah Music Festival , art walks, and the SCAD Sidewalk Arts Festival this time of year.

So have we convinced you yet? There’s only one thing left to do: plan your spring vacation! Savannah’s waiting for you.

Travelers flock to Savannah , Georgia, to see its picture-perfect scenery – like a time capsule of years past with carefully preserved architecture.

Savannah’s location in the coastal plain region puts it in a subtropical climate, meaning visitors can enjoy mild temperatures nearly year-round. But each season brings its own advantages and drawbacks. Summer is the most popular, but the heat can be overwhelming, and prices are at their highest. The winter, meanwhile, offers discounted rates but fewer things to do in terms of events.

But no matter what time of year you’re drawn to the Hostess City, you’re sure to enjoy yourself. Here's everything you need to know about what each season holds in Savannah.

The facade of the yellow Telfair Academy, a historic mansion and museum

January to February is the best time for budget travelers

Considered to be Savannah’s low season, the first months of the year are ideal for visitors looking to get the most for their money. Hotel prices can be at their lowest, apart from the dates around the New Year. For those used to cold temperatures, a winter trip to Savannah can be very comfortable, as it never dips well below 40°F.

If you’re looking to travel with your beloved, this is a great time for a weekend getaway as you can get a good deal on a hotel room, which leaves extra cash for a nice dinner and spa treatment. This is also the best time of year for first-time travelers and those looking to see the top sites without the crowds. It’s easy to hop on the trolley or a walking tour.

You also won’t have to face long lines at places you’d typically have to wait for, like Mrs Wilkes Boarding House , a famous family-style restaurant that has been serving up hearty Southern fare since 1943.

March to June is the best for cultural events

Despite the balmy temperatures through these months, it’s also Savannah’s high season due to the abundance of things to do, including some of the city’s most popular annual events, and the influx of spring break travelers. With the azaleas in bloom, photo ops are all around you.

If you want to be one of the many revelers attending the annual St Patrick’s Day festivities, be sure to book your hotel well ahead of time and bring plenty of green to wear! The month of June is an excellent time to check out Savannah’s landmarks focusing on its Black history, like the Pin Point Heritage Museum , the Ralph Mark Gilbert Civil Rights Museum , the Savannah African Art Museum and the Beach Institute African-American Cultural Center .

Expect to pay a premium for those hotel rooms, so book well in advance if you can. Making meal reservations is also a good idea, especially if you want a table at bucket-list-worthy establishments like The Grey and Husk . Expect to wait in line at walk-up spots like Leopold’s Ice Cream as well, and eat quickly as your sweets will begin to melt with temperatures ranging between 50 to 70F.

The fishing pier and Atlantic Ocean at Tybee Island, Georgia.

July to mid-September is best for museum-hopping

The other low season in Savannah is the peak of summer, and if you visit during this time, you’ll quickly learn why. The heat and humidity can be overwhelming, especially to the uninitiated, when temperatures reach 90F and above.

But the silver lining is that there are some deals to be had for visitors when it comes to hotel prices. It’s a wise idea to include “hotels with pools” in your search parameters. The Westin Savannah , the Perry Lane Hotel and the Thompson Savannah are all excellent spots to cool off after an afternoon of exploring.

If you plan to hit the beach, get an early start heading to Tybee Island because many others will have the same idea. The water may not be exactly refreshing, but it’s at least better than sweating it out on River Street.

But if the heat gets to be too much for you, seek solace inside Savannah’s museums and cultural attractions. Between the two buildings of the Telfair Museums , you can see hundreds of years’ worth of art, not to mention the dozens of historic house museums. There are also museums curated to specific interests, including the Savannah Children’s Museum and the American Prohibition Museum , with its own speakeasy.

Summer also signals the start of the minor league baseball season. The Savannah Bananas have a very  enthusiastic fanbase , so you’ll want to secure those tickets early! And when you go, be sure to deck yourself out in yellow, just as the locals do.

Mid-September to December is the best for the outdoors

The fall and early winter are Savannah’s best weather periods, though they also bring the rainy season – come prepared with an umbrella in case you get caught in a sudden but brief storm. This also falls during hurricane season, but because the city is located on the river instead of directly on the ocean, impacts are infrequent.

Hotels can be at their most affordable, especially if you’re visiting in conjunction with one of the many events like Halloween, the Tybee Pirate Festival , the SCAD Savannah Film Festival or Savannah Pride .

The weather is at its best for spending time outside, whether you’re looking to enjoy holiday shopping on Broughton Street, outdoor dining on one of Savannah’s plentiful patios or hiking the trails at Skidaway Island State Park . The mosquitoes have also, blessedly, disappeared for the season, but if you’re back in the woods, be mindful of ticks. This is also the ideal time to explore the nearby islands, like Little Tybee , by kayak.

Spring in Savannah is one of the most popular times of year to visit, and it only takes one look at the photos to understand why! Between the azaleas, climbing roses, jasmine, magnolias, fringe trees, and agapanthus, Savannah is bursting with color all season long.

Spring in Savannah

The best places to go to see all of the beautiful flowers around the city are the cemeteries in Savannah (particularly Bonaventure Cemetery and Laurel Grove Cemetery), the squares and neighborhoods in the Historic District , and at the Savannah Botanical Gardens.

What’s Blooming in Savannah?

Here is a very general timeline to help you with your planning…

  • March: This is prime azalea season! Dogwoods also begin blooming in March, and you can often spot yellow climbing roses in gardens throughout the Historic District. Sometimes the camellias are fading away, so you might catch remnants of them, too.
  • April: This is the time for Chinese fringe trees and dogwood blossoms. Sometimes the jasmine begins blooming late in the month. The Spanish moss gets tiny blossoms on it starting around this time of year.
  • May: Jasmine is the star of the show during May, and it looks (and smells) heavenly! Southern magnolias bloom in May, too. Bright purple agapanthus starts to bloom at the end of spring and lasts into the summer months.

Savannah Azaleas

If you can time your trip to coincide with azalea season, it’s by far the prettiest time of year to visit Savannah. The entire city seems like it’s covered in pink and white blossoms!

Allow me to present photographic evidence of this phenomenon…

Stately home in Savannah with an intricately detailed white front porch, a gas lantern near the door, and hundreds of pink and white azaleas growing over a wrought iron fence

Chinese Fringe Trees

It’s so fun when the Chinese fringe trees start blooming! From a distance, they look like they’re covered with giant cotton balls.

However, once you move closer it’s apparent they’re actually covered with thousands (maybe even hundreds of thousands?) of delicate white blossoms.

Dozens of clusters of delicate white blooms form cotton-ball or popcorn-like shapes in a Chinese fringe tree, which is backlit by the golden glow of the setting sun in Savannah

The fringe trees begin blooming in mid March and usually start to peak by early April. They bloom for approximately two weeks and draw lots of attention.

It’s common to see questions pop up in local Facebook groups with people asking, “What are those white trees blooming all over Savannah?”

Close-up of the delicate white blossoms on a Chinese fringe tree. Each bloom contains a cluster of dozens of elongated white petals

The three shots above are of a fringe tree in Taylor Square, but the best place to spot dozens in bloom all at once is in the median along Abercorn Street just south of Victory Drive.

Resurrection Fern

Let’s pause for a brief break from all the blooms so I can show you a sight that’s even more stunning than the azaleas. Behold the beauty of Southern live oaks covered in resurrection fern…

The thick branches of a Southern live oak covered in bright green resurrection fern in Savannah, Georgia

Resurrection fern is a type of fern that lies dormant for much of the year. However, as soon as it rains in Savannah the fern “resurrects” and puts on quite a show in all its fluffy green glory!

📸 Photography Tip: If you’re a photographer, you’re definitely going to want to shoot in Savannah just after a fresh rainfall. In addition to the resurrection fern, there are many areas that flood downtown, and you can capture some excellent reflection shots!

Spring in Savannah, Georgia, is a very pretty time of year. The weather is usually mild, with lows in the 60s to 70s and highs in the 70s to upper 80s. Flowers bloom throughout the season, beginning with azaleas in early March, then magnolias and jasmine in April and May.

If you’re wondering what to wear in Savannah during the spring, plan on packing layers. It’s often cool in the mornings and evenings, but the temperatures warm up significantly midday. Note that it’s often a few degrees cooler along River Street due to the breeze blowing in off the river.

Resurrection fern gets its name because it shrivels up and turns brown when the weather is dry, but as soon as a significant amount of rain falls, the plant “resurrects” and springs to life with bright green fronds.

HIT THE BEACH, TYBEE ISLAND

Tybee Island is the local beach area for Savannah and is located just 20 minutes from the historic district.  The island is known for its miles of sandy beaches, as well as its historic lighthouse and fort.

The weather in the spring is typically warm with average Atlantic Ocean temps in the 60’s…which is a bit chilly but tolerable.

The lighthouse, which was first built in 1736 and rebuilt in 1742 and again in 1867, is a popular tourist attraction. Visitors can climb the 178 steps to the top of the lighthouse for a panoramic view of the island and the surrounding area. The Tybee Island Light Station and Museum, located nearby, offers exhibits on the history of the lighthouse and the island.

Another popular attraction on Tybee Island is Fort Screven, a historic coastal defense fort built in the late 19th and early 20th century. Visitors can explore the fort’s historic gun batteries and learn about its role in defending the coast during World War II.

In addition to its beaches and historic sites, Tybee Island offers a variety of outdoor activities, such as fishing, boating, and bird watching. There are also a number of shops, restaurants, and bars on the island, making it a popular destination for both tourists and residents.

At the northern end of this district, the Riverfront area runs along River Street that fronts the Savannah River. This area is known as a trendy place with its restaurants and nightlife. 10 Best Southern Destinations For Spotting Spring Blooms

From an azalea garden in Asheville to a world-renowned floral festival in Texas, here are some of the best places to get your flower fix this spring.

best time to visit savannah in the spring

Wynn Meyers

Springtime in the South always seems to take too long to arrive, and then the summer pushes it away far sooner than we’d hoped. It’s a fleeting chapter, but one that arrives with warmer temperatures, a feeling of levity, and an entire roster of beautiful flowers . Whether they’re hardy annuals or highly anticipated perennials, it’s these bursts of color that signal the seasonal shift and its accompanying festivals, events, and general merriment.

While you’re nearly guaranteed to find a stunning array of flowers throughout the region, there are a few specific destinations every Southerner should experience this time of year. Washington, D.C., of course, is known for its cherry blossoms , and the Blue Ridge Parkway awakens from its winter slumber to show off its bloodroot, buttercups , and birdfoot violets. Then there are the magnolias in Charleston, the azaleas in Savannah, and a Texas wildflower that transforms the Hill Country into an ocean of richly colored blooms. Read on to start planning your flower-filled trip across the South.

Asheville, North Carolina

Getty Images

Asheville may reign supreme as the queen of the fall, but it also refuses to be outdone by other Southern cities in the spring. Come March, April, and May, there are countless spots to see the area’s bright colors, especially if you’re interested in wildflowers. For an almost scavenger-hunt-like adventure, follow Asheville’s Wildflower Bloom Schedule . Or, if you prefer to see everything in one place, you can’t miss the Biltmore estate or The North Carolina Arboretum . The former witnesses thousands of tulips and daffodils come to life and boasts an impressive azalea garden; follow the Bloom Report for the most up-to-date timings.

Savannah, Georgia

Already one of the most romantic places in the South, Savannah turns it up several notches in early March. It’s an exceedingly walkable city, so a stroll through the historic district’s squares and photogenic streets will bring you face-to-face with the swaths of pink azaleas . Or you can head directly to Forsyth Park and Bonaventure Cemetery, where the flowering shrub returns each year. Once you’ve grown tired of all that walking, make your way to Perry Lane Hotel and its rooftop bar, Peregrin , which was recently reimagined into a conservatory-inspired spot complete with a garden theme and botanical cocktails.

Mobile, Alabama

Of course, Mobile, Alabama, otherwise known as the Azalea City, had to make this list. Your first stop? A tour of Bellingrath Gardens and Home . And while the 65-acre estate's azaleas bloom in March, they’re not the only flowers you’ll find in the garden. There are also tulips, petunias, and pansies; April welcomes roses and verbena; and in May, zinnia and Southern magnolia make their appearances. Mobile Botanical Gardens is another must-visit this time of year, especially if you’re interested in seeing daffodils, salvias, yarrow, and Dutch irises.

Blue Ridge Parkway, North Carolina and Virginia

Some travelers head to Blue Ridge Parkway exclusively for its overlooks and mountain air. Others use it as a means of getting from point A to point B. In the springtime, it has another purpose. The scenic byway connecting Virginia and North Carolina is home to a wide range of flowers, including (but not limited to): mountain laurel, flowering dogwood, buttercups, bluets, columbine, bloodroot, birdfoot violet, wild geranium, squirrel corn, and dwarf iris.

Wilmington, North Carolina

LISA CORSON

The Tar Heel State has no shortage of places with spring blooms, though Wilmington is certainly one of the best. Anthophiles who are distinctly interested in tulips and azaleas may have Airlie Gardens on their radar—if not, it’s high time that changes. As with all gardens, the exact blooming schedule differs every year (depending on what kind of weather the area has experienced), but it’s usually in mid-March through mid-April. According to the property, 60,000 bulbs are planted to live alongside the 75,000 azaleas.

Charleston, South Carolina

There’s never a bad time to visit Charleston — although July and August can bring rather brutal levels of humidity — but spring is particularly magical. With a bit of luck, you may get to experience the short-lived “wisteria hysteria,” when the non-native plant hits peak bloom in mid-March. In April, May, and early June, azaleas, star jasmine, and the Southern magnolia add their own enchanting touches to the Holy City — find them in Hampton Park or the Historic District, or get an inside look at the gardens featured in The Charleston Festival (formerly known as the Festival of Houses and Gardens).

Texas Hill Country

Texas bluebonnet season is a time to celebrate in the Lone Star State, and there are many cities, towns , and highways throughout the Hill Country to get glimpses of the stunning display. Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in Austin is one of the easier destinations for out-of-towners to reach. If you have a car, head to Burnet, the “Bluebonnet Capital of Texas” that hosts the annual Bluebonnet Festival in April. Dripping Springs is another excellent option; just plug Mercer Street or Dripping Springs Ranch Park into your GPS, and prepare to be blown away by the blue buds.

Shenandoah National Park, Virginia

The spring flowers of Virginia’s Shenandoah National Park don’t hit peak bloom until May, which means you have a bit of time to plan your trip this year. Following a rainy April, you’ll see the buttercups, bluets, violets, wild geraniums, trilliums, hepatica, and pink lady's slippers — plus several other species — that give the area a complete, colorful makeover. To cover as much ground as possible, hop on the scenic Skyline Drive to explore the 105-mile roadway’s views and overlooks.

Washington, D.C.

Spring may be brief, but the capital’s famous cherry blossoms are even more evanescent. The estimated 3,800 trees grow around the Tidal Basin, in East Potomac Park, and on the grounds of the Washington Monument. To time your travels around peak season, keep tabs on the Cherry Blossom Watch ; it provides all the info you need to follow along with the status of the trees and get a good idea of how the weather is affecting the timing of peak season. There’s also the National Cherry Blossom Festival to attend; in 2024, it takes place from March 20 through April 14.

Dallas, Texas

If you’re confused as to why Dallas, the concrete jungle of the South, is on this list, just hear us out. The Texas metropolis plays host to the “largest annual floral festival in the Southwest,” Dallas Blooms . Located at the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden , the event, which runs through early April, showcases half a million spring-blooming bulbs. There are tulips, hyacinths, cherry trees, and daffodils—each variety with a slightly different bloom schedule.

'Ma Nature' expected to nurture warm spring in Savannah under climate change's influence

The Olde Pink House on Reynolds Square.

Oh, the barnyard is busy in a regular tizzy,And the obvious reason is because of the seasonMa Nature's lyrical, with her yearly miracleSpring, Spring, Spring.

Seventy years after Savannah’s own Johnny Mercer penned those lyrics , Ma Nature is expected to follow her own familiar script for coastal Georgia’s miraculous metamorphosis.

Spring is likely to be warmer than usual in Savannah and across Georgia this year, according to the latest long-term forecast from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Prediction Center .

That’s nothing new. Thanks to warming fueled primarily by heat-trapping pollution from the burning of fossil fuels, average spring temperatures have climbed considerably locally and over much of the Southeast over the past 50 years.

Savannah’s historical average temperature for March through May – considered the meteorological spring season – is 66 degrees. The area has dipped below that mark just three times over the past-quarter century, data from NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information shows.

More recently, springtime in Savannah over the past decade has been warmer than any 10-year period in NOAA records dating to 1948. The average March-through-May temperature since 2104 has been 68.3, or 2.3 degrees above normal.

Nine of the 11 warmest springs in Savannah have come since the turn of the century, including the balmiest ever in 2020, when the average temperature was more than 4 degrees above normal.

Suns gettin' shinery ,  To spotlight the finery , Spring, spring, spring

The Savannah area also is experiencing more instances of extreme spring heat.

Thirteen of the 20 highest annual average maximum temperatures for March, April and May have been recorded since 2000.

Nights have also been toastier, with nine of the 14 highest annual minimum temperatures for the spring period coming in the last 14 years.

Sneeze-worthy: Earlier pollen season in Savannah? Climate change the 'main culprit'

Every field wears a bonnetWith some spring daisies on it,Even birds of a feather show their clothes off together.

Why does Ma Nature’s hot spring breath matter?

“Warmer springs would mean changes in bloom-out and flowering, which has implications for allergy response, agriculture and (bird) migration patterns,” explained J. Marshall Shepherd , director of the University of Georgia's Atmospheric Sciences Program.  “I don’t want to start sneezing earlier due to early pollen, but I do.”

He’s not the only one.

“What scientists have discovered is that every year the pollen season starts earlier and lasts longer,” said Alan Harvey , a Georgia Southern University biology professor who has studied the science and cultural context of pollen.

Experts also agree on what’s driving this trend.

"Climate change issues are the main culprit,” Harvey said.

Earlier arrival of warm conditions also impacts the number of “chill hours” trees need while dormant to produce blossoms and fruit, including Georgia’s signature peaches, noted State Climatologist Bill Murphey with the state’s Environmental Protection Division.

Too few periods with temperatures of 45 degrees or less can lead to decreases in fruit production.

Saltwater intrusion: Savannah National Wildlife Refuge goes with flow to combat climate change

Yes siree spring disposes   That it's all one supposes ,  It's a real bed of roses ,  Waggin' tails, rubbin' noses

NOAA’s latest long-term forecast supposes a spring that is rainier and warmer than usual in coastal Georgia and across the state, but it doesn’t dispose of exceptions to those trends, cautioned Ron Morales, warning coordination meteorologist in the National Weather Service’s Charleston office.

“Even though there are higher chances for above normal temperatures and precipitation through this period, that does NOT mean that every day will be hot/warmer than normal and/or rainy/wetter than normal,” Morales wrote in an email.

As long-time residents of the Savannah area well know, Ma Nature’s mood swings can upend a weather trend without notice. Just think of those surprising showers that weren’t in the forecast and escape radar.

That variability can pose a particular threat in early spring, suggested Murphey, the state climatologist.

The earlier onset of warm conditions tends to wake plants and trees from their winter slumbers sooner.

“The timing of leaf-out and blooms for central and south Georgia followed by any possible late frost or freeze events would be impactful,” Murphey said.

Some parts of inland Georgia dipped below freezing last week but coastal areas, warmed by ocean temperatures above 60 degrees, stayed safely above that.

In Savannah, the average last day with temperatures of 32 degrees or less is Feb. 28, although a procrastinating Ma Nature – perhaps preoccupied by a particularly perplexing tax return – waited until April 16 in 1962 for her final freeze.

Each day is mother's day , The next is some other's day   When all is king

Now is the best time to see spring wildflowers in Iowa. Here's what to look for.

Early spring marks the start of wildflower season in Iowa, but these natural buds are only available for a limited time.

Woodland areas in Iowa are where wildflowers flourish the most as the weather warms, but roadside grasses can also be visible in spring.

Here is everything you need to know about wildflowers in Iowa.

In the lead-up to the 2020 election, all eyes are on Iowa. Get updates of all things Iowa politics delivered to your inbox.

How do spring blooms differ from flowers seen in summer months?

The first flowers in early spring are not always the same blooms seen in summer. Ephemerals are short-lived wildflowers that bloom early in the spring, typically in March, and fade away by summer around May.

Exactly when blooming occurs can vary depending on the region of the state. Southern Iowa sees ephemerals earlier than northern Iowa, DNR Ecologist John Pearson said.

"They need warmth to metabolize they can grow," Pearson said. "Cold snaps will either slow them down from starting or finishing their bloom. It depends on how long the cold snap is too."

Where are the best locations to see wildflowers in central Iowa?

While prairie grass can be more rare, wildflowers can be seen in nearly any woodland area in Iowa.

State parks are usually a good spot to see wildflowers and several are available within a 40-minute drive of Des Moines:

  • Margo Frankel Woods State Park, Des Moines
  • Brown's Woods, West Des Moines
  • Ledges State Park, Madrid
  • Lake Ahquabi State Park, Indianola

Where are other areas in the state to see spring wildflowers?

Most regions of Iowa are within the vicinity of a state park with woodland areas to see wildflowers, Pearson said. Here are his main recommendations for anyone outside of the Des Moines area:

  • Stone State Park, Sioux City
  • Palisades-Kepler State Park, Mt. Vernon
  • Yellow River State Forest, Harpers Ferry
  • Shimek State Park, Farmington
  • Waubonsie State Park, Hamburg

What are the most common types of wildflowers to see at these locations?

Spring beauty and Virginia bluebells are the most common and easily identifiable, Pearson said. Spring beauty is pinkish-white with five petals. As their name describes, Virginia bluebells are bell-shaped with six violet-blue petals. Toothworts are also common. They are white or sometimes lavender flowers with four petals similar to a cross shape.

While there are just three common species across Iowa, Pearson said there are countless different species depending on what woodland you visit.

"I'd have to look at a list, there are so many it is hard to memorize them all," Pearson said jokingly.

When you come across any wildflower, don't pick it.

"If everyone picked a flower there would be none left for the people behind," Pearson said. "So we encourage people to appreciate their beauty with their eyes and their cameras. Definitely don't take specimens away, just leave them there for the next person."

These are the best places to visit in April for an unforgettable experience

Get out and explore these amazing destinations this month.

Mark Reif

In April, the air tastes sweeter and the sun shines brighter. After winter’s low temps and frozen wind, spring brings friendly surroundings ripe for exploring. For some, that could mean a coastal getaway with warm ocean waters and drinks on the beach. For others, spring skiing in soft snow and wearing only a T-shirt could be the ticket. Both are a hearty welcome to warmer days.

Why April is a great month to travel

Our favorite destinations to visit in april, time to start planning an april getaway.

If you’re excited to get away but aren’t sure where to go, you’ve come to the right place. We’ve compiled some of the best places to visit in April, from the high alpine to lush coastal retreats . Ready to take off? Let’s go exploring.

April invites you to seek new adventures. Spring signals a new beginning, a transition from a sometimes bleak winter into longer days and positive moods. What better time to book that ticket, reserve that room, and enjoy new places?

April also hits the mark with a blend of winter and summer weather. Big mountains have ample snowpack for warm weather shredding. Coastal areas have the sweet tinge of a change in seasons, making them even more appealing. Especially if you live in a cold climate, it feels like it’s time to open the door and hit the road.

From the thrill of spring skiing to the lush surroundings of ocean getaways, here are our preferred locales for April. Each lets you soak up spring’s energy while enjoying world-class sights and experiences.

Once you visit Lake Tahoe, you never forget it. The crystal clear waters have a magical, timeless beauty, and the mountains offer steeps and snow among the world’s best. During springtime, those elements combine to make every day a party on the slopes.

Specifically, we like Palisades Tahoe for its world-class terrain and ample California sunlight. Unofficially dubbed the “Spring Skiing Capital of the World,” the resort received eight feet of snow during an early March storm. Safe to say, there’s still plenty to go around. So wax your snowboard, make your reservations, and get ready for some all-time riding.

Kauai, Hawaii

“The Garden Island” sports picturesque waterfalls, an endless coastline, and mile after mile of hiking trails. Kauai has something to explore around every corner, and since April’s a shoulder season, you could get a bargain on a flight.

You can visit Hanalei Bay to brush up on your surfing skills and watch some of the best surfers in the world. Or, take a helicopter tour over mountains and canyons with majestic waterfalls that look out of a movie. To finish the day, partake in fresh sushi from the Pacific.

Zermatt, Switzerland

With classic European charm and stunning vistas, Zermatt is an idyllic alpine setting. The car-free village — situated between towering mountains and dotted with small shops and cafés — lets you stroll and enjoy after long days on the mountain. In the distance, the Matterhorn cuts into the sky, its sharp profile symbolizing true mountain adventure.

The skiing’s pretty good, too. With the highest lifts in Europe and wide open pistes, Zermatt lets you stretch your legs and experience the joy of snow sports. With mild April weather, you can shed layers and focus on enjoying your turns instead of surviving sub-zero temps. You might even score a spring powder day. To get there, just hop on the Glacier Express train , take in the stunning panoramas, and get ready for a pure alpine experience.

Lake Como, Italy

With the Alps in the distance and villas lining its banks, Lake Como looks like a centuries-old oil painting. Shaped like an upside-down “Y,” the aquamarine lake offers a mix of history, culture, and calm in an otherwise hectic world. When you want to escape and reset, this body of water and its surroundings are the perfect setting.

Take a spin in a wooden speedboat or cross the lake in a ferry. Explore the eclectic shores and shops of Bellagio, or take a reflective walk through the quiet fishing village of Pescallo. One thing’s for sure—you’ll have a trip to remember.

Joshua Tree National Park

When you want to experience pure nature and surreal landscapes, Joshua Tree National Park takes you to another world. Notable for its unique Joshua trees, the park is also home to big horn sheep, rabbits, and coyotes. But in April, the real attraction is blooming wildflowers like the Desert Globemallow, Brittlebush, and Indian Paintbrush.

The park is also an open playground for rock climbers , with over 8,000 climbing routes among the monzogranite formations. If you’re new to climbing, taking a guided tour can get your feet wet and introduce you to a lifetime of exploring. Then, after a day under the sun, take in the park’s clear night sky, unencumbered by artificial light.

April travel offers diverse options. You can pick from winter destinations or summer escapes, with each providing a sweet introduction to spring. Want to squeeze a little more out of the ski season? Just head to Tahoe for a party on the piste. Can’t wait for summer? Fly to Kauai and savor the warm water and deep forests. So book that flight, pack your bags, and take it all in.
