Grand Princess Itineraries

Grand princess review, review of grand princess.

The 1998-built Grand Princess cruise ship is the 1st Grand-class Princess Cruises liner, with sisterships Crown ,  Diamond , Caribbean , Golden (now Pacific Adventure) , Emerald , Ruby , Star (now Pacific Encounter) and Sapphire .

The vessel (IMO number 9104005) is currently Bermuda- flagged (MMSI 310327000) and registered in Hamilton .

History - construction and ownership

Princess Cruises is a USA-based passenger shipping company headquartered in Beverly Hills CA. A former subsidiary of P&O Princess Cruises (1977-founded), in 2003, the company merged with Carnival Corporation - the world's largest cruise shipowner. Among Princess Cruise Lines Ltd's assets is the Caribbean private island resort Princess Cays (on Bahamas Eleuthera Island's southern end), located approx 80 km (50 mi) from Nassau .

Grand Princess cruise ship

When debuted in 1998, the 2600-passenger ship Grand Princess was promoted as "the biggest, the fastest cruise vessel in the world, the most advanced... the grandest cruise liner on the ocean." The boat did actually spend a year as the biggest-fastest at sea, but she is now dwarfed by many others which are bigger, faster, newer and more technologically advanced. Over a decade later, the main vessel design which anchors Princess' most popular class still holds its own thanks to a massive refurbishment in May 2011. The multi-million dollar overhaul of Grand Princess included a full transformation of the ship's atrium into the much jazzier Piazza (a newfangled addition represented by the fleet's most recent vessels that combines theatre in the round with food and drink outlets). Grand eventually got her own version of The Sanctuary, a popular adult-only sun deck that was released on Crown Princess in 2006.

Decks and Cabins

Most Grand Princess staterooms (1301 total, in 34 grades) are 170-ft2 balcony cabins (502). Almost 80% of the ship's outside staterooms have private step-out balconies. Wheelchair-accessible cabins are 27. The largest accommodation is the Grand Suite (615 ft2 / 57 m2, with terrace sized 115 ft2 / 11 m2).

The boat has 16 decks , of which 13 are passenger-accessible and 8 with cabins.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

Grand Princess passengers choose between open seating and two assigned dinner seatings; breakfast and lunch in all Princess restaurants are open seating. Alternative dinner venues include the reservations-only Sabatini’s Italian and Crown Grill restaurants (both with cover). All Princess Cruises Lido buffets are open around the clock. The Wheelhouse Bar serves a pub lunch, and a grill and pizzeria offer casual snack choices. The ice-cream bars and patisseries charge for premium ice cream and specialty coffee. A wine bar offers extra-charge artisan cheeses and evening snacks. Chef’s Table and Ultimate Balcony Dining options are also available, as is afternoon tea and room service.

Follows the complete list of Grand Princess restaurants and food bars.

  • Michelangelo Restaurant (ship's aft Dining Room; dinner only - offers “Anytime Dining” between 5:30 p.m. -10 p.m.)
  • Crown Grill (160-seat steakhouse/seafood restaurant, reservations recommended; on select days serves British Pub Lunch, complimentary)
  • Da Vinci Restaurant (ship's forward Dining Room for Breakfast 7-9 a.m., Lunch 12-1:30 p.m., Afternoon Tea 3:30-4:30 p.m.; features “Anytime Dining” for Dinner between 5:30-8 p.m. or 8-10 p.m.)
  • Botticelli Restaurant (dinner only aft Dining Room; with 2 fixed seatings at 5:45 and 8 p.m.)
  • Sabatini’s Restaurant (Italian speciality restaurant; reservations recommended). The officially named "Sabatini’s Italian Trattoria" restaurant debuted on Grand Princess in 1998. Today, it is available fleetwide. In 2017, Princess Cruises announced the restaurant's fleetwide enhancement via a partnership with celebrity chef Angelo Auriana. Among the upgrades are new interior design and updated menu (with antipasti and handmade pasta dishes by Chef Auriana). The transformed Sabatini’s debuted on Caribbean Princess in April 2017.
  • Trident Grill & Prego Pizzeria (self-service, complimentary fast food bar)
  • Alfredo’s Pizzeria (complimentary)
  • Horizon Court (self-service buffet restaurant, complimentary)
  • Sterling Steakhouse (speciality restaurant).

Shipboard entertainment options - Fun and Sport

Grand's piazza is magnificent. Its wide range of entertainment makes the versatile spot a popular destination where guests never know what they'll see. The best vantage point is from a Piazza seating, or opt for a table in adjoining lounges like the International Cafe and the wine bar Vines. Beyond the piazza, there are production shows in Princess Theatre, first-run movies in Vista Lounge, daytime music poolside by Calypso Band, and the many activities prepared by the cruise director's staff. Passengers can also enjoy the nighttime strains of Rosario Strings in ship's Grand Atrium, the individual performers and comics in Explorer's and Vista Lounges, the country band in Wheelhouse Bar, and the action in One5, a sophisticated venue that replaced the Skywalker's disco.

Itineraries

Grand Princess itinerary program is based on 15-day Hawaii and 7-day Mexican Riviera cruises with departures from Californian homeports ( Los Angeles and San Francisco ). In the summer, Grand Princess sails in Alaska leaving out of Vancouver BC  (Canada).

In 2020 Grand Princess was scheduled to start a seasonal Singapore homeporting season (December 2020 through March 2021) as the first Princess MedallionClass liner homeported in Asia. However, these plans were canceled due to the Coronavirus crisis.

Grand Princess Wiki

The Fincantieri Monfalcone -built Princess Cruises Grand ship is the company's first Grand-class liner, with (same-designed) sisterships Golden and Star (now Pacific Encounter) . The other (similarly-designed) vessels from this series are Caribbean , Crown , Diamond , Emerald , Ruby , Sapphire .

Ship's inaugural cruise (maiden voyage) started on May 27, 1998. Its godmother was Olivia de Havilland - US actress born in 1916 in Japan, to British parents, most popular for her role in "Gone with the Wind" 1939). Ship's naming ceremony was on September 29, 1998. The liner is a little different than its sisters. The used timber is of darker woods and the interior design is closer to Sun Class ships (smaller-sized).

During the inaugural season, many popular actors participated in shipboard live performances. Among those were Al Martino, Lorna Luft, Bob Anderson, Rita Moreno, Red Buttons. Famous musicians that worked that year were the Canadian band "Mud Sharks" and Dominic Halpin together with his band.

During the ship's drydock refurbishment in 2013, Skywalkers Nightclub was removed from the stern, opening space for the new facilities Crown Grill, Pizzeria, Leaves (tea lounge) and "The One5" (nightclub).

Fun fact is that the Grand ship was a background scene for an episode of UK's "The Apprentice" (TV reality game show).

All Itineraries

Day 1: At Sea

Say 'G'day' to one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Stroll along the world-famous Bondi and Watsons Beaches. Tour the Sydney Opera House on Bennelong Point, shop for Aboriginal art, or go on a photographic safari. This diverse land is home to crocodiles, koalas, emus, and, of course, kangaroos.

Day 3: At Sea

New Zealand's largest city is draped over seven volcanoes and wrapped around Waitemata Harbour (meaning "sea of sparkling waters" in Maori). Despite its British feel, it is the world's largest Polynesian city. Shop for Polynesian crafts on Queen Street, the main drag. Or from atop Mt. Eden, overlook the "City of Sails," which will host the America's Cup races in 2000.

Day 7: At Sea

Wellington is the capital city of New Zealand / Aotearoa. It is also the cultural, administrative and political center of the country. Two aspects of the city that will immediately strike any visitor are the sprawling harbour and the dramatic, hilly terrain. Everywhere you go, the sounds and smell of the ocean hang in the air, and green hills and valleys wrap you in a bear-hug embrace.

Port Chalmers

The attractive, historic town and modern container port of Port Chalmers, on a tiny peninsula 12km from Dunedin, is worth a half-day trip for its magnificent harbour views offset by bush-covered hills, its fine nineteenth-century buildings and its thriving artistic community. The site was chosen in 1844 as the port to serve the proposed Scottish settlement of New Edinburgh, later called Dunedin. The first settlers arrived on the John Wickliffe in March 1848 and named the port after the Reverend Dr Thomas Chalmers.

On the Fourth Day, There Was Chinese Food

This cartoon shows Wayne Chan in a hospital bed suffering from withdrawals from not having soy sauce and sesame oil.

By Wayne Chan

I recently took a Royal Princess cruise ship making our way around New Zealand and on to Australia. The beautiful cruise came complete with an incredibly nice crew that made our trip a pleasant one. But to tell you the truth, I was a little apprehensive about the trip. Why? The food. To be honest, the food was terrific…and more than plentiful. It’s not the quality of the food I was worried about. It’s the variety, or lack thereof. To be specific, I was worried that I would not find a decent Chinese meal for the 21 days we were at sea. On trips like these, I tend to go through withdrawal symptoms if I don’t get some soy sauce or sesame oil into my body at least every three days. And it’s not like there isn’t a lot of variety on board. You name it, they’ve got it. Fish tacos? Pefecto. Italian? Abbondante! Even sushi? Hai! But look for a steamed dumpling or anything kung pao? Nothing. I knew this going in. I knew there wouldn’t be any Chinese food on this cruise. Lucky for me, I planned ahead. Our first few days before the cruise, we stayed in Auckland, New Zealand. New Zealand and Australia are so much closer to Asia than we are in the states, it shouldn’t be an issue finding some Chinese food during our stay there – and boy, was I right. We soon discovered that right in the heart of Auckland, there’s Dominion Road, just row after row of Chinese restaurants. Chinese barbeque, hot pot, dim sum, seafood, and whatever your heart (and stomach) desires. Of the three nights we stayed in Auckland, we had Chinese food for three of our meals. I wasn’t even the one insisting on it. Apparently in our group, I wasn’t the only one going through MSG withdrawal syndrome. We ate more than we really should have. Peking Duck, crab, steamed fish, dim sum – you name it, we ate it. It was like we were camels but instead of storing water in our humps, our humps (or bellies) were filled with noodles and dumplings. I’m not sure the human body really works like that but it’s been four days on this cruise and I’m perfectly fine eating another croissant, pizza or a burger and fries. It’s almost a welcome change of pace compared to the abundance of Chinese food we’ve been eating. And I’ve had the opportunity to try a few new things too! Turns out I love crumpets! I like meat pies too! Not so crazy about muesli though. Still, I was worried. Towards the end of our trip, we still had nine days at sea with potentially no Chinese food, I thought that I would never make it.

Turns out, on our last stop in Sydney, there was a Din Tai Fung dumpling restaurant right around the corner. Am I not an experienced traveler or what? I may need to talk to my therapist about this. Maybe he should have met me at the dumpling house.

Princess Cruises Next-Generation Ship - Sun Princess – to Feature the Brand’s Most Exciting & Contemporary Spaces

Epic piazza, state-of-the-art arena theater in the round, amazing dining venues and largest ever casino.

Here comes Sun Princess! Princess Cruises has revealed a first glimpse of the most contemporary and state-of-the-art designs imaged yet onboard Sun Princess – “The Love Boat” line’s newest, largest and most innovative ship ever built and scheduled to debut in early 2024. With bright designs inspired by rays of sunlight and next-level expanded spaces, guests are in for an extraordinary cruise experience including a showstopping Arena theater and stunning three-story dining venue - a first for Princess.

“With the construction of any new ship, we have the incredible opportunity to design standout spaces with our guests’ preferences in mind,” said John Padgett. “With the new platform and size of Sun Princess, we’re uniquely able to refresh venues we know our guests love and expand upon, redesign and elevate them to the next level. We know our sun-inspired designs will exceed expectations and elevate the entire Princess experience.”

A first for Princess, the Horizons Dining Room introduces a stunning three-story dining venue. This newly envisioned space is open and flexible, featuring dining options to suit every mood. Stunning wake views and natural light highlight a decorative sculpture that stretches from deck 6 to deck 8. The three decks will each have their own personalities, offer different dining experiences and range in levels of formality.

Contemporary and versatile, the Princess Arena is an evolution and the most technologically advanced Princess Theater design. Upon entering, guests will be drawn to a stunning visual above the central stage which can become part of the show. A radical ceiling accentuates the Arena’s in-the-round configuration with soft curved walls that allude to the movement of the tide. With moveable seats and capacity of a little more than 1,000 people, three configurations will maximize sight lines, as technological capabilities deliver a truly captivating experience.

Additional signature favorites with new designs and décor scheduled to debut onboard Sun Princess in early 2024, include:

Alfredo’s Pizzeria – This charming favorite that has been named “Best Pizza at Sea” will once again have an open kitchen design, allowing guests to watch as the chefs create pizza by hand and serve them straight out of them oven. New to the kitchen is a professional, open-mouth oven that reaches 968 degrees, allowing chefs to create truly authentic contemporary Neapolitan pizza. Guests will enjoy an authentic experience comparable to one they would receive when traveling to Italy.

Princess Casino – The largest Princess casino in both size and number of gaming positions will be in the Piazza, giving guests easy access to their favorite betting games. The spacious floorplan ensures guest comfort and entertainment, and with over 200 of the newest and most popular slots and video poker games, there is something for everyone.

Crown Grill – A favorite of Princess guests who enjoy a perfectly grilled steak, Crown Grill on Sun Princess takes this iconic space and modernizes it with a classic steakhouse feel weaved with modern touches. Inviting leather booths, circular seating and modern artwork custom designed for this restaurant will welcome guests in for an unforgettable dinner experience. Plus, guests can enjoy views of their food being prepared in the largest show galley on a Princess ship.

Sabatini's Italian Trattoria – Serving a modern, casual but elegant Italian dining experience, the newly imagined Sabatini’s will appeal to families with unique handmade pasta courses prepared fresh daily. A crisp, tailored, geometric design that also will feature a pasta room for guests to marvel at the pasta-making process. The restaurant is designed with intimate bistro-style nooks and a dramatic circular main room.

Princess Live! – Combining the design elements of Princess Live! and guest favorite Explorer’s Lounge, guests on Sun Princess will enjoy participatory, signature cruise activities like game shows, trivia and the daily Wake Show. Luxurious textures and materials will be featured on a mixture of comfortable loose and fixed lounge seating with full beverage service, an inviting semi-open façade, and large LED screen on stage. Guests can easily move from Princess Live! to enjoy a meal or cocktail with the close proximity to restaurants and cocktail lounges, bridging a seamless integration of entertainment and bar concepts.

The Shops of Princess – With five retail locations, plus an art gallery, The Shops of Princess get a makeover on Sun Princess and guests can expect the same great experience, just more of it. Modern, elegant boutiques connect fluidly, featuring interactive experiences. Guests can shop easily from space to space featuring Princess logo merchandise, a lifestyle boutique, a new bazaar featuring destination-specific selections, plus jewelry, watches, cosmetics fragrances and a modern art gallery.

Additional spaces with new designs, signage and décor will include Crooner’s, Wheelhouse Bar, International Cafe, Good Spirits and Gelateria.

Currently under construction at the Fincantieri shipyard in Italy, the largest Princess ship ever constructed, accommodating 4,000 guests, embraces Italian heritage by featuring a newly designed, brand-iconic Piazza and The Dome, a cutting-edge entertainment space inspired by the terraces of Santorini. While introducing a completely new class of ships for the cruise line, Sun Princess also remains true to the smooth clean lines and design aesthetics of the cruise line’s famous Seawitch icon and popularized in the original “Love Boat” TV series.

Sun Princess will also feature the exclusive Princess Medallion experience that will extend Princess’ leadership position in delivering exceptional and custom experiences at unmatched scale, offering guests personalized service only previously found on the industry’s smallest ships.

Part of Carnival Corporation’s green cruising focus, Sun Princess will be the first Princess ship and one of 11 new vessels in the corporate fleet powered by Liquified Natural Gas (LNG), the world’s cleanest fossil fuel.

The 2024 Sun Princess inaugural cruise season in the Mediterranean is on sale now. More information can be found at www.princess.com .
