Montana Wilderness Horseback Pack Trips

Why Choose a Wilderness Pack Trip?

Ride into the backcountry and embrace the ultimate calm and pristine beauty of the wilderness. Our guides, camp jacks, and camp cooks take care of the packing, set up, and chores associated with camp life and horse care. This leaves you to let all your cares melt away as you enjoy life’s simple pleasures and the blessings of mother nature. Travel by horseback is a deep-rooted piece of American heritage.

For most folks, the wilderness is no longer accessible as they are born into and wrapped up in the hustle and bustle of city life. For some even, the idea of entering the wilderness is intimidating. This is where Swan Mountain Outfitters comes in- we are passionate about providing all folks (even beginners!) a route into the wilderness in a way that showcases its rugged beauty and builds a new rapport with nature. We believe the more people who can share this experience, the better chance America’s lands have of being protected for future generations to enjoy, appreciate, and get back to their roots.

“Your staff was excellent and the camp comfortable. I felt safe at all times. The food was tasty and plentiful. I not only had a great time but learned a great deal about everything from horses and mules to fishing, hunting and just plain sightseeing and relaxing. The trip was so perfect I cannot stop talking about it! -Howard Pyles”

What to Expect on Our Wilderness Pack Trips

Your trip begins in Northwest Montana’s Swan Valley . An often-overlooked gem, the Swan Valley has all the beauty of glacier country, but is nestled quietly apart from the nearby big attractions of Flathead Lake, Glacier National Park, and the big city of Missoula.

From our “base camp” in the Swan Valley, you’ll greet your guides and they’ll begin packing up your duffel onto mules. Our guides will match you to a mountain savvy trail horse and provide some basic horsemanship instruction. Group sizes tend to be six to eight guests, so unless you’ve got a private pack trip, there may be some new faces to greet too. You’ll then hit the trail and make the 14 mile journey following Lion Creek up from the valley floor to our “upper camp” which rests just on the very border of the Bob Marshall Wilderness.

Upper camp, being 14 miles from the nearest road, electricity, or plumbing, offers a quiet and serene camping setting. Camp is located right on the bank of Lion Creek, and although there is no fishing allowed in the creek you are more than welcome to jump in and cool off! Breakfast and dinner are served family style in the cook tent, while lunch is enjoyed on your daily excursion. You will stay in wall tents (large canvas tents that a person can stand and move about easily inside) with cots and foam mattress’s await you for a good night’s sleep. There is a shower tent in which you can enjoy a hot shower from heated creek water, and two latrines just out of camp for privacy.

Daily Excursions

The next morning, awaken to birds chirping and head to the cook tent to get a hot cup of coffee. After a hot breakfast and some time to gather your things for the day, you’ll get back on your horse and hit the trail!

The Bob Marshall Wilderness: The beautiful Bob is hard to beat! There are endless views and several mountain lakes to fish at and enjoy. To get there you will leave camp and continue up the trail to Lion Creek pass. The pass into the Bob is 9 tight switchbacks over a mountain ridge, but have no fear! Your horse has been doing this all summer, most have been at it for years and know how to keep you safe. Please note that as this trail is so steep we must walk back down the switchbacks. Once at the bottom of the switchbacks you may get back on your horse and continue the ride back to camp.

Swan Ridge: This adventure features beautiful views and quite often mountain goats! You will enjoy a different trail that takes you up to a high mountain ridge awash with wildflowers. You can either go for a short walk to enjoy the views or push yourself and reach up to 9’000 feet in elevation! This trail is also quite steep and will require walking down as well. This gives you time to truly enjoy your surroundings and pick as many huckleberries as you would like!

No matter where the day takes you, you’ll return to upper camp each night. Having a home base like this is a great advantage to be able to explore at your own pace each day, and, you only have to unpack your duffel once!

On your last day, we will enjoy breakfast around 8:00AM, after which you will hand your packed duffel to the packers. While they get the mules ready enjoy a cup of coffee and say goodbye to beautiful upper camp! Once the packers head out it will be your turn to mount up and ride back to civilization.

About the 'Bob'

Named after an early forester and conservationist, the Bob Marshall Wilderness is over 1.5 million acres of roadless terrain, leaving it as one of the most completely preserved mountain ecosystems in the world. It contains the kind of wilderness most people can only imagine; rugged peaks, alpine lakes, grassy meadows, shimmering streams, and big river valleys.

The Wilderness runs for 60 miles along the Continental Divide, with elevations ranging from 4,000 feet to more than 9,000 feet. A huge escarpment called the Chinese Wall highlights the Bob's vast beauty, with an average height of more than 1,000 feet and a length of 22 miles.

With more than 1,000 miles of a well-developed trail system, the 'Bob' is prime location for horse back and mule-pack trips. It s array of wildlife also allows for trophy fishing and hunting trips, all of which are available through Bob Marshall Wilderness Outfitters!

Bob Marshall Wilderness Outfitters is owned and operated by Trent Osburn. Trent is a native to Montana and has ample experience in the backcountry. Growing up hunting with his dad and brothers, and outfitting prior to buying Bob Marshall Wilderness Outfitters, Trent has the expertise and knowledge to guide you through the trip of a lifetime in the most unforgettable way possible.

Horses in Montana Backcountry

Horseback Riding, Pack Trips & Horses for Sale

Experience the finest in montana horseback riding.

No image is more closely tied to the Old West than that of the horse. That’s why we make horseback rides into the backcountry a primary activity here at Covered Wagon Ranch. There’s no substitute for the feeling you get when you head out for Montana horseback riding in the mountains or backcountry of Yellowstone National Park. You’ll be guided by experienced wranglers who know the Custer-Gallatin and Madison ranges, the Lee Metcalf Wilderness and Yellowstone Park very well, from wildflowers to wildlife. The Covered Wagon Ranch proudly operates with a Special Use Permit on the Custer Gallatin National Forest. We also are privileged to provide guided horseback rides into Yellowstone National Park (beginning July 1st each season) under a Concessionaires Permit through the National Park Service. NOTE: We only offer rides to our overnight ranch guests, we are not a day use riding facility.

Half or Full Day Rides

Each morning at breakfast Kurt makes his way through the Lodge asking everyone what they want to do for the day: hiking, fly fishing, simply relaxing, or riding. Riders choose a half day or full day rides. Morning rides are about 2 hours, and full day rides are from 3-6 hours. Mondays we only offer lunch rides due to getting everyone matched up with their horses. There is no lunch served on ranch on Mondays. Please note we do not offer the option to go on an AM ride, come back to the ranch, and go on a PM ride or ride out on the trail and come back and ride in the arena. These things sour our horses and our horse’s happiness is very important to us. If your desire is to ride a full day, choose the full day ride, you won’t regret it, and lunch on the trail is fabulous!

Return guests usually have an idea of where they want to go, but Kurt can also choose a ride you’re sure to enjoy. We tailor each ride to your preferences and experience, trying to cater to everyone’s abilities. If you have never rode a horse, we ask that you get a few lessons before arriving to the ranch due to the mountain terrain we ride in. All rides are guided. We keep our groups small with 4-6 people in a group. We do not offer loping rides due to the terrain.

New guests meet at the barn at 8:45AM for orientation and get setup on horses. Morning and full day rides generally go out between 9:30-10:00AM. Mondays we pack a lunch because we generally are a little later getting out due to getting everyone matched up with their horses. While all rides are filled with dramatic, pristine views of the countryside, the perennial favorite is the all-day ride with unforgettable views of the Rocky Mountains while enjoying a trail-side lunch.

2-Night July Pack Trips

Experience nature not just away from the city, but in its most raw and spectacular form; the heart of the wilderness.

As part of your stay at the Covered Wagon Ranch, you may want to add a pack trip to your adventure. Our Montana pack trips into the stunning backcountry of the Custer-Gallatin National Forest will take you on the journey of a lifetime. Departing by horseback, we will climb steep mountain ridges, ford the cool crystal creeks and streams of the wilderness, and travel through lush alpine meadows before reaching camp.

Montana Wilderness

Our campsites are comfortable and picturesque. You will sleep warm and soundly inside your canvas wall tent or beneath a blanket of stars.  Then in the morning, be awakened by the warm sun tickling your nose and the smell of freshly brewed coffee on the fire. Camp is an excellent place to relax and soak up the wonder of God’s Country. Spend your time exploring the wilds of the wilderness by horseback. If you are a writer, bring your journal; if you paint, bring your canvas. Perhaps you appreciate your surroundings through photography, or simply reading. Whatever your pleasure, camp life on our Montana pack trips will clear your mind, invigorate your spirit and provide you with plenty of time to indulge and challenge yourself.

tent site for backcountry packtrips

We maintain our tradition of personal attention to each guest by keeping our pack trips small (no more than four, and a minimum of two).  Due to Montana’s terrain, we require intermediate riders and a minimum of 12 years old. Unfortunately, we cannot cater to dietary restrictions on pack trips . If adding a pack trip, you must book as a rider and book a pack trip at time of making ranch reservation. We limit our trips to one per week, departing on Tuesday and returning on Thursday. $800 per person will be added to the regular cost of your stay.

Covered Wagon Ranch & Puckett Performance & Ranch Horses

Covered Wagon Ranch is home to ranch, mountain and performance horses. The horses at Covered Wagon will take very good care of you, too. Many of our excellent horses were raised right here on the ranch, and they know how to ride with everyone from novice to experienced hands. When you arrive, you’ll be matched with the right horse that’s yours for the entire visit, then you decide whether the day brings a high-alpine wildflowers or through open meadows. We have an arena on ranch and can even give lessons on Monday to horse beginners. It is what suits you, (1/2 or full day ride) but we do not offer rides day of arrival (Sunday) or day of departure (Saturday).

Looking to purchase a horse? Covered Wagon Ranch and Puckett Performance and Ranch Horses- raise, train and sell performance, ranch and trail horses from weanlings to seasoned ones and everything in between. One thing is for sure we know horses! Give us a call to see if we have the perfect match for you! 406-995-4237

What our Guests Have to Say:

Amazing vacation! We went out to the Covered Wagon Ranch for a week in July, and had an incredible time! The vacation started with a 3 day pack trip up in the mountains with three CWR guides, and it was just amazing. We were in a wilderness area, but the camp was really comfortable, and our guides cooked delicious food and made sure we were always taken care of. We experienced all the fun and charms of camping, including seeing 200 elk run through camp, amazing views of Montana mountains, and eating and sharing stories around the campfire. It was truly an adventure, and we had a blast.

Testimonials

When I was looking for a great trip and adventure for my 40th birthday, I knew that I wanted something special and unique. A Montana wilderness trip with my college buddies was something that I always dreamed about. 406 Wilderness Outfitters and the Cheff family created an awesome experience for my group in the Bob Marshall wilderness. The experience was a once in lifetime, some of the best views and landscapes that this country has to offer. 406 Wilderness Outfitters helped me check this off my bucket list.
What a fabulously memorable trip!!! My husband, two daughters ages 12 & 14 and I recently took a week long trip into the Bob Marshall Wilderness with the assistance of 406 Wilderness Outfitters. As a family, we spend a fair share of time enjoying the outdoors of Montana. I can honestly say, this was the most memorable and seamless of all trips thanks to the unique and family- friendly service the Cheff’s provide.

Operating in the Bob Marshall Wilderness since 1932.

Montana Summer Horseback Pack Trips

Montana wilderness horseback pack trips near Glacier National Park

Summer Horseback Pack Trips Sightseeing – $450 per person per day Fishing – $550 per person per day (minimum age 6; minimum group size 5/maximum group size 10)

Guided wilderness trips take place from June through August in the Great Bear Wilderness. We camp at various sites along rivers, creeks and lakes with ample opportunity to fish, hike, ride, and explore amidst the grandeur of truly spectacular country or simply sit around the campfire swapping tall tales of your wilderness adventure.

These are typically “roving” light-weight camps, giving you a chance to see different areas of the Wilderness.

We plan trips around your interests and specialize in private trips for groups of 4 to 12 people. Trips vary in length according to guests.  We recommend at least 2 nights/3 days, although we can do an overnight if that’s all that fits your schedule.

We provide a full service adventure and can help with any planning needed prior to or after your trip. These trips depart from and return to Base Camp.

Our pack trips are fully outfitted adventures – Experienced, friendly guides, tents you can stand in, cots, great food, a new best friend (your horse!), open air outhouse, filtered water, and memories to last a lifetime!

Snowy Springs pack string crossing river

Just did a 3 day pack trip and then rented their cabin for 5 days. The pack trip was great. Chance was professional and did a great job meeting the needs of our group. We were a mix of riders and fishermen and we all got time to do what we love. The food, gear and stock were great.

Specialty Fishing Trips

Montana is great fly fishing country, and no visit to Glacier National Park would be complete without trying your luck catching our native Westslope cutthroat and rainbow trout. Specialty fishing trips are pack trips that focus on fishing, fishing and more fishing. Experience fishing the wilderness section of the Middle Fork of the Flathead River, high alpine lakes, and smaller creeks. The best time is July through August after the spring runoff and once the rivers have cleared. Small rafts and float tubes can be used on the lakes. Our guides are here to assist, and will bring or recommend flies to catch the big ones!

K Lazy 3 Summer Adventures | Montana's Bob Marshall Wilderness | Horseback Packing, Fly Fishing, Trail Rides

Montana wilderness pack trips, trail rides, lodge, ☰ navigation, continental divide trail (cdt): welcome to high country, on top of the world in montana.

The Continental Divide Pack Trip is a 7-day roving camp, adventure travel trip, which focuses on a horseback trail ride along and over the famous Rocky Mountain Continental Divide. Throw in a little fishing along the way and your camera will get a workout as you travel to the top of the world!

The Continental Divide of the Americas (also referred to as the Great Continental Divide) is a geological boundary, separating the watersheds of the Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic and Arctic Oceans. It extends from the Bering Strait to the Strait of Magellan, down North America along the Rocky Mountains and into the tip of South America. It is crossed by the Panama Canal and by the two outlets of Isa Lake in Yellowstone National Park.

The Continental Divide National Scenic Trail (or “CDT”) is a U.S. National Scenic Trail which runs 3,100 miles between Mexico and Canada. It follows the Continental Divide along the Rocky Mountains and crosses five states (Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico). At Triple Divide Peak in Glacier National Park in Montana, the CDT separates the Hudson Bay, Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean drainages.

  • Meadow Creek Camp and the historic Webb Lake Ranger Station
  • Ride the famous Continental Divide Trail (CDT)
  • Ride to the top of Crow Mountain at 8600 feet
  • Great opportunity to see wildlife sunrise and sunsets
  • Big Horn Lake fishing
  • Fly fishing on amazing untouched water on Landers Creek

Continental Divide Trail Itinerary

Itineraries are Subject to Change!  This trip can start out going one way and end another….    Like  ending at Meadow Creek Camp, instead of starting there.

Day 1 – Pack up and head into the Scapegoat Wilderness

We will pack up the mules and adjust your stirrups on your well-seasoned mountain horse or mule and ride into our Meadow Creek base camp, 14 miles in, within the heart of the Scapegoat Wilderness. We will break for lunch at Webb Lake Ranger Station, which is the halfway point for the day. Overlooking Webb Lake, the once “year-round manned Ranger Station” is a reminder of years gone by, as it is rarely used by Forest Service personnel in the 21st century.

Day 2 – Meadow Creek Layover Day – Relax

This is a layover day at Meadow Creek base camp where you can set your own agenda. You have the opportunity to fish for 2-pound native Westslope Cutthroat and 4-pound Rainbow trout, explore, hike, ride off the mainline trails, or simply relax in your beautiful wilderness setting. This should be a great day to spot a moose or a herd of elk.

Day 3 – Saddle Up and Ride

Today we take a 4-hour horseback trail ride to our next camp at the Middle Fork of Landers Creek. Learn about the forces of wildfire as we travel through the 1988 Canyon Creek Fire area. The fire engulfed over 200,000 acres in only 36 hours. Now you can enjoy the solitude of the forest in its rebirth. Hungry 8- to 10-inch cutthroats await your arrival on the Middle Fork for a late afternoon outing.

Day 4 – Crow Mountain (elevation 8600 feet)

It’s a layover day, so relax and take in Mother Nature’s beauty at your own pace. Once the horses are wrangled up, we’ll saddle up and try your hand at some real mountain riding. Your trusty steed will carry you to the top of Crow Mountain. The fact that the glacier lily wildflowers are still popping out of the few remaining snow banks from last winter reminds us that just because the calendar reads late July, springtime is just coming to the high country. Let’s pick a few flowers for the centerpiece at tonight’s dinner table…

Day 5 – To the Top

Today we Ride the Divide. Keep your camera handy as we horseback ride atop the Rocky Mountain Continental Divide to our next campsite – “Valley of the Moon,” elevation 8,000 feet. We are in big game country — watch for mountain goat, elk, and mule deer at home in the vast meadows of wild flowers. If we are lucky, maybe we can spot some endangered species (grizzly bear or gray wolf). The stars tonight will seem close enough to reach out and grab one!

Day 6 – Fish and Explore

Sunrise on the Divide is a scene that will be etched in your memory forever! A short day ride along the top of the Continental Divide will put us at Big Horn Lake. The Blackfoot Indian Tribe named the lake No-See-Um, as it is nestled beneath vertical cliffs on 3 sides, making it hard to find until you are actually standing next to it. Now is the time to try your skill (or luck) at fly fishing and/or photography.  It’s just a great day to be in the mountains!

Day 7 – Back to Reality

Pack up and hit the trail again back to civilization. It’s a 5-hour horseback ride with the Rocky Mountain Continental Divide at your back and the trailhead nearing with every step of your horses feet. It’s hard not to turn around and let the wilderness adventure never end. But first, one last lesson from Mother Nature as we ride through the Snow-Talon fire area of 2003 and witness the regeneration of post-fire forests. It is reemerging with every passing day — you may find yourself doing the same, as you sit in the saddle this final day. The seat in your car may never feel comfortable again!

To be fully prepared, please follow the recommended clothing list closely. See below for average summer temperatures for the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex:
