Royal Caribbean Drink Packages

Royal Caribbean offers three all-inclusive drink packages, a premium coffee package, and a water package. The drink package works anywhere on the cruise ship, including the onboard bars, lounges, and restaurants. You can also use the drink package at Royal Caribbean’s private island CocoCay .

Royal Caribbean’s drink packages include:

Deluxe Beverage Package

  • Refreshment Package (No alcohol)

Classic Soda Package

Coffee card.

  • Water Package

Two Cocktails on the Beach

Royal Caribbean offers a Deluxe Beverage Package as their primary drink package. The Deluxe drink package includes a variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, commonly called the “unlimited drinks package.”

The price of the Deluxe Package ranges from $63 to $89 per person daily.

Unlike other cruise lines, the prices for Royal Caribbeans drink packages vary by ship, sail date, and itinerary. You’ll find higher prices during newer vessels and itineraries during the busier times of the year (ex., summer, march break, and Christmas.)

The Deluxe Beverage Package includes nearly every drink onboard. The list consists of

  • Cocktails, spirits, and liqueurs
  • Wine by the glass
  • Beers, including specialty beers
  • Non-alcoholic cocktails (mocktails)
  • Soda, including fountain soda and Coca-Cola Freestyle options
  • Still and sparkling water
  • Fresh-squeezed juices
  • Premium coffees and teas
  • Bottled and sparkling water

You’ll even get a Coca-Cola souvenir cup when you purchase the package.

You can use the drink package at the ship’s bars, restaurants, and lounges. But it doesn’t cover beverages ordered through room service or minibar items.

Additionally, the Deluxe Beverage Package only includes drinks up to $13 per drink before gratuity . If you want to splurge for a more expensive beverage, you’ll need to pay the difference between the cost of the drink and the $13 per glass allowance.

The $13 per drink allotment is a shock for many cruisers. But it covers most of the 16oz beers and cocktails along with a wide selection of wines by the glass.

The drink package also includes most liquor and premium spirits. Higher-end brands such as Grey Goose, Patron, Johnny Walker Black Label, Tito’s Vodka, and Dewar’s 12 scotch are all included.

As a bonus, the Deluxe Beverage Package provides a 40% discount on bottled wines priced up to $100 and a 20% discount on bottles of wine priced above $100 .

Depending on your choice of beverage, you will need to drink between 6 and 10 beverages per day to break even. The exact number depends on your preferences for soft drinks, specialty coffees, and alcoholic beverages.

Refreshment Package

Orange Juice and Mamosa on cruise ship balcony

If you want only non-alcoholic drinks or don’t mind paying extra for alcoholic beverages, the Refreshment Package might be for you.

Royal Caribbean’s Refreshment Package offers everything in the Deluxe Beverage Package minus the alcoholic drinks.

The refreshment package provides the following:

  • Soda, including fountain soda and Coca-Cola Freestyle machines

The onboard package prices for the Refreshment Package range between $29 to $38 per person per day.

The Refreshment Drink Package allows you to enjoy nearly every non-alcoholic beverage for up to $13 per drink. The package has a few exclusions, including Starbucks, room service, and mini bar purchases.

This package provides great value because you only need to drink six to eight beverages per day to break even on your purchase.

As you might have guessed, Royal Caribbean’s Classic Soda package offers unlimited soda during your cruise.

However, drinks such as bottled water, juices, premium coffees, and alcoholic beverages aren’t included in the drink plan.

The onboard pricing for the Classic Soda Package is $12 to $15 per person per day.

It’s important to remember that the Classic Soda Package doesn’t include cans of soda or drinks ordered through room service or minibar items.

With the package, you’ll also receive a complimentary Coca-Cola souvenir cup. You can use the cup with the onboard Coke Freestyle machines that dispense over 100 flavor combinations.

So, feel free to mix it up and create your crazy soda concoctions.

With soda prices around $3.25, you only need to purchase 4-5 drinks daily to break even.

Woman holding cup of coffee on cruise ship

Royal Caribbean’s Coffee Card is a must for coffee lovers. The Coffee Card lets you redeem up to 15 specialty coffees throughout your cruise.

We rarely purchase the “all-inclusive” drink packages, but the Coffee Package is an exception. Marcello and I are big coffee drinkers, and the onboard cappuccinos and lattes are exceptional.

We always use up our 15 drinks by the end of a seven-night cruise. And unlike other packages on the list, you don’t need to purchase them for everyone in the cabin .

Because the Coffee Card uses a punch card system, it’s the only drink package you can share with family and friends.

The card costs around $31 to $40 , and you only need to enjoy eight to ten premium coffees to break even on your purchase . The card can be used for espresso, cappuccino, lattes, and more.

It’s important to note that regular brew coffee is complimentary on the ship. So if you’re not into specialty coffee, you can enjoy drip coffee for free.

Before purchasing the card, there are a few things to consider:

  • You can’t use the Cafe Select Coffee Card at Starbucks Cafes
  • Both the Deluxe Beverage Package and the Refreshment Package include specialty coffee. So, if you plan on enjoying specialty coffee, you only need to purchase one beverage package, not both.

Royal Caribbean Water Package

The tap water on Royal Caribbean cruise ships is always free and perfectly safe. But if you prefer bottled water, you might want to purchase Royal Caribbean’s water package.

The Water Package allows you to order 6, 12, or 24 packs of water.

This package is excellent for long days in port to bring the water with you off the boat. It’s always important to stay hydrated while exploring the ports of call. And if you didn’t pack a reusable water bottle, the Water Package is a great option.

What Isn’t Included With a Beverage Plan?

Royal Caribbeans drink packages have different features, inclusions, and exclusions. The specifics of the drink package should be checked before purchasing, as they can change at any time.

Generally, each of the beverage packages offered by Royal Caribbean excludes the following:

  • Drinks from Starbucks cafes
  • Room service beverages
  • Minibar items
  • Beverages more than $13 per glass
  • Duty-free shop bottles of liquor
  • Drinks in souvenir glasses
  • Specialty beers

When deciding whether the drink package is worth it, you’ll need to do some math to determine if you’d save money purchasing the package or buying individual drinks.

Royal Caribbean’s drink prices are higher relative to other mainstream cruise lines.

Here are the average prices for drinks on a Royal Caribbean cruise :

* Please note these are average prices. Actual prices may vary.

Is a Royal Caribbean Drink Package Worth It?

Vintages wine bar on Ovation of the Seas

Deciding if the Royal Caribbean drink package is worth it for you ultimately depends on your preferences and drinking habits. If you’ll spend more money purchasing individual drinks than the package costs, the drink package is worth it.

For most people, the drink package is not worth it. That’s because the drink package cost is more than most people would spend if they purchased the drinks individually.

Before purchasing a drink package from Royal Caribbean, we suggest doing the math to ensure you’re not wasting money.

Consider how many drinks you’ll consume daily using the prices above. Once you add up the prices, you’ll know if the drink package will save you money or cost you more than purchasing individual drinks.

Be sure to consider that you might spend some days in port. You won’t be able to use the drink package when you’re on land.

During port days, you must pay for any drinks you purchase on land. And because you’re not on the ship, you won’t consume as many beverages using your plan, which may make the drink package a not-so-ideal choice.

The packages also have a fine print that states, “ Any guest wishing to purchase an alcoholic beverage package must do so for all guests of legal drinking age in the same stateroom. “

When calculating the package cost, make sure you factor in the drinking habits of everyone sharing your cabin.

We’ve compiled an entire article to help you determine if buying a drink package is right for you .

How to Get a Discount on the Drink Package

Getting a discount on your Royal Caribbean drink package can be a great way to save money on your cruise vacation. Follow these tips, and you’ll be sipping on your favorite beverages without breaking the bank.

Book in advance: One of the easiest ways to snag a deal is by purchasing your drink package before your cruise. Royal Caribbean often offers discounts on its drink packages when pre-purchased via the Cruise Planner site. The same discount may vary, but it’s common to see a 20% discount off the daily rate.

You can also take advantage of price protection by purchasing the drink package in advance. If the price of the drink package drops, you can cancel the drink plan and buy it at a lower price.

When you purchase the beverage package in advance and take advantage of price protection, you’ll always pay the lowest price and get the best deal on the drink plan.

Take advantage of your Crown and Anchor Society membership: If you’re a Crown and Anchor Society member, you may be eligible for an onboard discount on your drink package. Discounts typically range from 20% off for Diamond members, 30% off for Diamond Plus members, and 40% off for Pinnacle members.

Stay alert for promotions: Royal Caribbean occasionally holds special sales on drink packages. To maximize your chances of spotting a deal, subscribe to their email newsletter and follow their social media accounts. This way, you’ll be notified when a promotion becomes available.

Talk to your travel agent: Travel agents often receive deals and promotions unavailable to the public. When planning your cruise, it’s a good idea to ask your travel agent if they know of any special discounts on Royal Caribbean’s drink packages.

Can I Find Free Drinks Onboard?

Free Champagne at the Captains Toast

As a Royal Caribbean guest, you might wonder if there are any opportunities to enjoy free drinks during your cruise. While the cruise line does not typically offer its drink packages for free, there are some situations where you can enjoy complimentary beverages.

You’re in luck if you are a Diamond, Diamond Plus, or Pinnacle member of Royal Caribbean’s Crown and Anchor Society ! These Crown & Anchor level members receive free drink vouchers during the cruise, which can be redeemed for beverages at the ship’s bars and lounges.

You’ll receive a complimentary Deluxe Beverage Package when you book a Star Class suite on Royal Caribbean’s Oasis or Quantum Class ships . With this package, you’ll be able to enjoy unlimited drinks throughout your cruise for a fixed daily price without any additional cost.

There are several other opportunities to find free drinks on Royal Caribbean .

Keep an eye out for the following:

  • Star-class suite guests receive a complimentary Deluxe Beverage Package.
  • Diamond, Diamond Plus, or Pinnacle members of Royal Caribbean’s Crown and Anchor Society receive free drink vouchers nightly.
  • An art auction , where they serve complimentary Champagne.
  • Attend a liquor tasting at the duty-free shop.
  • On Royal Caribbean’s first formal night , you can attend the Captain’s Toast and receive a complimentary glass of Champagne.
  • Platinum and higher Crown & Anchor Society Members get free drinks during Happy Hour between 5 pm and 8:30 pm .
  • Guests booked in a Grand Suite or higher can enjoy complimentary evening drinks in the Concierge Lounge.
  • A buy one get one free drink voucher might be pre-loaded onto your Seapass card.

Do Crown & Anchor Members Get Free Drinks?

Royal Caribbean’s Crown & Anchor Society offers passengers points for each night they spend on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship.

Diamond, Diamond Plus, and Pinnacle members receive complimentary drinks every evening between 5 pm and 8 pm at the Exclusive Nightly Diamond Event. Passengers who attend the event can receive three free drinks from a list that includes beers, wines, spirits, and sodas.

To reach Diamond Status, you will need to accumulate 80 points.

Royal Caribbean cruise ships also host a Welcome Back Party with free Champagne for Platinum and higher members (30 points or more).

Can Just One Person Buy the Package?

Royal Caribbean requires that if one adult purchases the beverage package, all the adults in the room must purchase the same package.

The cruise line’s rule is likely to prevent people from sharing the drink package with family and friends. The rule makes it more costly to purchase the drink package, especially if not everyone uses it to the fullest.

What if one person doesn’t drink or doesn’t drink enough to make the drink package worthwhile?

In most cases, you must choose between buying a drink package for everyone or forgoing the purchase.

You could always call the cruise line if you don’t want to buy two drink packages or if there is a circumstance where one person can’t drink, such as a pregnancy or addiction.

If you have a strong reason why one guest won’t be using the package, such as a health condition, addiction, or pregnancy, there is a chance Royal Caribbean will be lenient if you contact them before purchasing.

Several passengers have told us that when they called and explained that the second passenger doesn’t drink alcohol, they were offered the Refreshment Package instead of the Deluxe Drinks Package for the second passenger. You’ll still need to purchase two drink packages, but it is a cheaper option.

It might not get you off the hook, but it can help you save money.

Finally, Royal Caribbean does not require purchasing any drink packages for children under 18. So if you buy a drink package, you don’t need one for your kids.

Royal Caribbean’s CocoCay private island is one of the most popular destinations for the cruise line.

Do Royal Caribbean Ships Offer Drinking Straws?

In 2019, Royal Caribbean began an initiative to cut down on single-use plastics on its cruise ships. The bars and restaurants will provide paper straws. However, they do not hold up well.

What is the Drinking Age on a Royal Caribbean Cruise?

For cruises that depart in North America, the minimum drinking age is 21. For all other cruises, the drinking age is 18. If you celebrate a birthday on a Royal Caribbean cruise and turn the drinking age, you can ask Guest Services to modify your record so that you can drink on your birthday.

Royal Caribbean Drink Package Cost, Inclusions & Tips

If you plan on taking a cruise with Royal Caribbean, you’ve probably heard that they have drink packages.

But what drink package makes the most sense? Well, it depends on what you enjoy on your vacation. For some, water is all they need, while some drink tons of soft drinks, coffee, or tea. For others, specialty cocktails or ice-cold beer are key to a great cruise .

Is the Royal Caribbean Drink Package Worth It?

Because the price of the drink package varies, it depends.

  • If you want to drink without thinking about the bill, get the drink package.
  • If you find a good deal on the drink package, get it.
  • If the drink package on your cruise is one of the more expensive ones, consider how much you want to be drinking. You need to drink a lot to make the $80+/day packages worth it.

Royal Caribbean has four drink packages to choose from (water, classic soda, refreshments, and deluxe). Each of these packages includes different beverages and has a different price. In this article, we will tell you about each Royal Caribbean drink package cost in more detail, including what you get for your money.

How much is a drinking package on Royal Caribbean?

The drink packages on Royal Caribbean range in price from 12.99 per day for the classic soda package to as much as $105 for the deluxe beverage package. We will go into the specifics of each package below.

How many drinks per day can you order with the Royal Caribbean drink package?

There is no limit on the number of drinks you can order with the Royal Caribbean drinking packages.

Available Royal Caribbean Drink Packages

If you’ve never been on a cruise before, it’s important to know that they are different than going to an all-inclusive resort. When you go to an all-inclusive resort, nearly everything, including alcoholic drinks, is included in the price. However, with a majority of cruises, you may be able to get most or all meals, basic refreshments, and activities included in the price, but you still have to pay separately for alcohol.

For example, we recently did a Virgin Voyages alcohol package and drink prices review, and we found that they are pretty close to being an all-inclusive cruise. Everything is included, even the high-end dining restaurants. However, passengers still need to pay separately for alcoholic drinks or purchase a $300 bar tab.

royal caribbean cruises drink package cost

Unfortunately, Royal Caribbean isn’t all-inclusive , and you will need to purchase one of their four drink packages. You will also need to purchase a food package in order to go to certain restaurants on the ship.

Let’s take a look at each Royal Caribbean drink package cost to help you decide which one makes the most sense for you.

Royal Caribbean Drink Package Cost: Water Package

The basic and least expensive Royal Caribbean drink package is the water package. This package will give you 6, 12, or 24 one-liter bottles of Evian water in your cabin. The water package is a one-time cost and ranges from $39 for 12 bottles to $60 for 24 bottles.

The only downfall of this package is that you are buying a limited number of bottles of water during your trip.

Royal Caribbean Drink Package Cost: Classic Soda Package

If you would like to have something other than water, the classic soda package is a good choice. With this package, you get unlimited refills on all fountain drinks as well as a Coca-Cola cup to take home with you.

The classic soda package costs $12.99 per guest per day. (Keep in mind, this doesn’t include gratuity.) Once you purchase this package, you will get a soda package icon on your SeaPass card. This will tell the employees that you are allowed to get unlimited refreshment drinks and can use the Coca-Cola Freestyle Machines.

Royal Caribbean Drink Package Cost: Refreshment Package

For $29 per guest per day for the refreshment package, passengers can get a wide variety of non-alcoholic drinks. These include coffee, tea, bottled water, fresh squeezed orange juice, virgin cocktails, and fountain soda.

This package will also give you a Coca-Cola souvenir cup. If you don’t plan on drinking alcohol but want a wide variety of refreshments to choose from, this is the best package.

Sun, Sand and a drink in the bahamas

Royal Caribbean Drink Package Cost: Deluxe Beverage Package

Last but not least, the deluxe beverage package is the best bang for your buck if you want to enjoy plenty of alcoholic drinks without worrying about costs. For $63-$70 per guest per day, you will get an unlimited amount of beer, wine, and select spirits. In addition, you get coffee, tea, and all other non-alcoholic beverages.

If you want to enjoy a bottle of wine during a nice dinner, the deluxe package includes a 40% discount on bottles of wine under $100 and 20% on bottles of wine above $100.

The deluxe drink package has a threshold of $12 per drink. If you do want to get a drink above that price, you will pay the difference. Like the other packages, gratuity is not included in the price and will need to be paid during the final checkout.

Can You Cheat Royal Caribbean Drink Package Cost?

It may seem to many travelers that the Royal Caribbean drink package cost is on the pricier side. Due to this, there are many who look for ways to avoid paying it, by bringing their own drinks aboard. While there are ways to save money, cheating the Royal Caribbean drink package could ruin your vacation before it even gets started.

If you are caught cheating on the Royal Caribbean drink package, you will get your drink package canceled, could be denied boarding, and could face fines. To us, it doesn’t sound like it’s worth the risk since it takes months of planning to go on a cruise.

How to Get the Best Value Out of a Royal Caribbean Drink Package

Nonetheless, there are ways to make the most of the drink packages.

Pack a Bottle of Wine

The first way is to bring your own bottle of wine on the ship. Royal Caribbean allows you to bring a bottle of wine, but if you want to drink it in public spaces, you will have to pay a $15 corkage fee. However, if you drink the wine in your room, you won’t be charged.

Order Top-Shelf Liquor

If you purchase the Royal Caribbean deluxe drink package, then we recommend ordering top-shelf liquor. In general, cruises want to save money, so if you don’t specify which liquor you want, you will get the cheapest, or well, brand.

Ordering top-shelf liquor for your drinks ensures that you are getting your money’s worth. You just need to stay under the $12 per drink threshold so you don’t pay more out of pocket.

Sneak Your Own Alcohol

You can also try to sneak your own alcohol onto the cruise to save yourself money. As mentioned earlier, we don’t recommend this because if you are caught, you will face the consequences from the cruise line. If you go this route, then buying the classic soda or refreshments packages is the way to go. From there, you can add your own liquor to make cocktails.

Do Both People Have to Buy A Drink Package on Royal Caribbean?

Yes. If one person purchases a deluxe drink package with Royal Caribbean, then everyone in the same cabin who is of drinking age will also be charged for one. This can be frustrating for some because maybe you like to drink cocktails, but your spouse doesn’t drink. In this case, you will be paying extra for something that won’t be used.

The reason Royal Caribbean does this is to avoid people cheating on the drink package system. It would be easy for one person to buy a deluxe drink package, order extra drinks from the bar, and share them with their spouse to save money.

If your spouse has a medical condition that prevents them from drinking alcohol, then you can try calling Royal Caribbean to avoid being charged for two deluxe drink packages. You may need to provide proof, but it’s worth a shot and can save you money.

Royal Caribbean Drink Package Cost: Is It Worth It?

If you’re going on a honeymoon or romantic getaway and you both enjoy alcoholic drinks, then the deluxe drink package can be worth it. However, if only one of you drinks alcohol, neither of you drinks alcohol, or you only drink a little, it may be better to stick to the water, classic soda, or refreshments package.

Ultimately, it comes down to weighing the pros and cons and deciding what is best for you and your loved ones. You can always add a drink package later if you change your mind–up to a certain point. Royal Caribbean allows drink packages to be added 72 hours before departure or on the first day of the cruise.

Can two people share a drink package Royal Caribbean?

No, you can not share a drink package with another guest.

Is it cheaper to buy a drinks package before the cruise?

Yes, the price is usually discounted before the cruise. You can also cancel your current package and repurchase it if the price goes down before your trip.

While hot tea and coffee are included, specialty coffees like espresso based drinks will be an upcharge. Most Royal Caribbean cruise ships have a Café Promenade serving up lattes, cappuccinos, and similar drinks.  Most of these drinks range from $4.00 to $5.00. These include iced beverages as well as Teavana handcrafted drinks.

For those who are caffeine junkies, like us, you should consider a Café Select Coffee card . These coffee cards can help you save money on your cruise.

On ships that have licensed Starbucks, pricing is slightly higher than similar beverages served at the Café Promenade. Standard espresso based drinks are around $5.00, with specialty drinks at Starbucks being over $6.00 for a grande, including the line’s frozen Frappuccinos. Of note, drinks at licensed Starbucks kiosks are NOT included in the Royal Caribbean drink package.

Of course, these beer prices on Royal Caribbean are before the 18% gratuity.

This pricing is also similar for beer alternatives like seltzers or ciders, which tend to be around $7.99 a serving.

Drink Prices on Royal Caribbean 2023

Royal Caribbean cruise ships do have an English pub that has a more extensive beer list. But, most of these beers are priced under $8, except for one or two rare beers that are $8.25 a glass.

How much does wine cost on Royal Caribbean ships?

One adult libation that varies greatly in price on Royal Caribbean is wine. For a glass of wine, the range is from $8 for a Beringer White Zinfandel to $24 for a glass of Moet & Chandon champagne.

royal caribbean cruises drink package cost

Still, most glasses of wine are around $11 a serving, which is well within the drink package allotments (see below). On Royal Caribbean ships, there are often wine bars, from Vintages on ships like Oasis of the Seas and Freedom of the Seas to Giovanni’s Wine Bar on Wonder of the Seas and Odyssey of the Seas . These wine-specific venues will have a greater selection of wines. However, many of them will have higher price tags.

None of the Royal Caribbean drink packages cover bottles of wine. Though, guests who purchase the Deluxe drink package will receive a 40% discount on bottled wines priced up to $100, and 20% discount on wine prices above $100.

As one would expect, bottles of wine vary greatly depending on the label, brand, and vintage. Most bottles of wine are priced around $50 to $60. Of course, you can find some selections in the $40 range, or you can splurge for a $231 bottle of Dom Perignon while on vacation.

Note, cruisers are allowed to bring two bottles of wine , per cabin, onboard in their carry-on luggage . Although, Royal Caribbean does have a corkage fee.

The Royal Caribbean drink prices for specialty cocktails are $14. These prices apply to specialty drinks like the Lime and Coconut or the Goombay Smash poolside at the Lime and Coconut. The signature old fashions and Collins drinks at the Schooner Bar, like the Sidecar or Lavender Daiquiri, are also $14 each.

Royal Caribbean’s bar menu revealed a number of new libations with the restart in 2021. These signature drinks, like the Pineapple Guava Sangria or the Passion Spritz, are all $14.

So, for the most part, unless you are looking for a super premium brand, the mixed drinks and cocktails on Royal Caribbean ships will cost between $11 and $14.

What are the prices of Royal Caribbean drink packages?

Royal Caribbean drink packages have dynamic pricing. This means that the price will vary based on ship, time of year, and itinerary. Historically, the onboard price of the Deluxe Beverage Package ranges from $63 to $98 a day (plus gratuity).

This package covers all alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, including beer, wine by the glass, and cocktails up to $14.

Prices for the non-alcoholic drink packages are obviously much cheaper.

  • Royal Refreshment Drink Package: $29-38 per person, per day
  • Classic Soda Package: $12.99-$15 per person, per day
  • Café Select Coffee Card: $31 for 15 drinks

Keep in mind that the Royal Caribbean Drink packages are “unlimited” for the duration of the cruise, unlike  Carnival Cruise Line  which limits guests to 15 drinks.

Recap of the Drink Prices on Royal Caribbean

Now that you know the Royal Caribbean drink prices, you can calculate whether purchasing a drink package is right for you.

In our experiences, it’s not too difficult to realize a cost savings with these packages, especially if you consume specialty coffee drinks, soda, and bottled water in addition to alcoholic beverages. my husband an I have been loyal to Royal Caribbean for many years and we are Diamond plus Crown and Anchor members. I read what the drink packages are worth on cruises out of the US but when it comes to cruises out of Australia the amount per day is much higher. As our dollar is value lower than the $US it makes no sense to charge us more in Australian dollars as all our expenses on board are converted to $US dollars so you get you money back three times over. Have a little consideration for those outside the US who remain loyal to your Company. The new drink system you brought in where we get 5 drinks a day doesn’t cut it for Crown and Anchor members. By the time we have a fresh juice in the morning along with a decent coffee and a bottle of water …we have 2 drinks left for the day- its not such a great package when you look at it closely, hence the reason we always purchase a deluxe drink package. Perhaps around $90 per day based on the tier you are on, would be considerable if you people really care about loyalty.

Really Lady? You want to gripe and complain that you ONLY get 5 complimentary beverages per person/ per day?!? Oh, the Horror!! I’m Crown & Anchor Emerald, not Diamond or Diamond Plus (Yet), so I don’t receive your (rather generous) Daily 5 Complimentary Beverages benefit. For my upcoming 9 night sailing to Hawaii, the Unlimited Beverage Package is USD$90 per-person/per-day (Pp/Pd). I figure on average my Fiancé and I will each consume; 2 bottled h20 ($3.50ea.), 2 Sodas ($3.50ea.) 1-2 Specialty Coffees ($4.50ea.) a glass of Wine with Dinner ($11.00ea.) and 3-4 Cocktails ($14.00ea.) every day of the cruise. That’s a whole lotta booze and beverages for one person in a day, and the package price comes to approximately what we’d pay for those quantities without it. So at 2 people sailing for 9 nights at USD$90 Pp/Pd, that comes to USD$1620 for the cruise (not including gratuity). IF I had your VERY GENEROUS benefit that you’re here complaining about, I could use said benefit for the Booze (most expensive part of the beverage tab) and pay out-of-pocket for the rest. In my scenario, that’s a savings of USD$67 Pp/Pd, or USD$1206 for the entire sailing. Now maybe only 3-4 Boozy Beverages a day is a joke to you, and if so, kudos to your Aussie livers -that’s impressive! My point is, a benefit that can save you well over USD$1K is nothing to sneer at, and we (Crown & Anchor Members) are lucky Royal Caribbean hasn’t scaled it back, reserved it for only the highest echelon (Pinnacle) or outright eliminated it! Be happy with what you (so deservingly) have earned, and have fun -you’re on vacation!

You can pay for juice, coffee, soda and save your vouchers for the more expensive alcohol. Just tell the server not to use the voucher

Not complain too much on the cost I have to pay in Canadian dollars so add 35% to the cost And still worth it. 2 specialty coffees every day plus the copious amounts of bottled water and the cocktails well. We are diamond members I just give mopey free drinks to crew buy the red bulls or what ever they want. You all know what you are getting into when you cruise and drink. That’s a lot like going to a hockey game and complaining about the price of a beer.

After you book your cruise, what is the current discounted price of the Deluxe Beverage Package ? And are they still doing the Buy 1 get and 1 for 50% off ?

We are signed up for Royal Caribbean Liberty of the Seas cruise on August 5, 2023. Can you send me cost of alcohol drink package. Any specials going on for this cruise.

I keep hearing that Johnny Rocket shakes are included in the package yet the restaurant itself lunch and dinner is a specialty restaurant. If you have the drink package, is this true? And are you able to order only a shake a la carte? How much would that usually be? Thanks.

We sailed symphony of the seas in sept 2022 and Johnny rockets shakes were included in the deluxe drink package. Food was extra.

Drinks package ×2,,,,No,,,,,,you are pricing me out…..we will be getting off on port days !

Johnny rocket milkshakes are included in the refreshment package

Can you bring your own soda and water on board?

No, prices are not fair! We paid $1,420.44 which included a discount for buy one/get one 50% off ($101 per person/per day). If historically, prices ranged from $63 – $98, this is no deal at all.

I saw it in google yeasterday. Very interesting

Ultimate Guide To Royal Caribbean Drink Packages: Best Beverage Packages

Cruising without drinks is like watching a movie without popcorn; it’s totally incomplete. So that’s why Drink Packages are the utmost consideration for cruisers.

But wait; choosing a drink package requires a lot of consideration because if you end up with the wrong one that doesn’t meet your preferences, it’s a bit of a buzzkill.

But don’t worry, my fellow cruisers. I’ve got your back. I’m Zoe, and cruising since my childhood. From years of observation, I’ll help you choose a package that suits your needs.

So stay with me in this article to learn everything regarding each drink package and decide which one caters to your taste.

So let’s get started.

Table of Contents

What’s Included In Drink Packages On Royal Caribbean?

drink packages on royal caribbean

Royal Caribbean offers three Beverage packages to elevate your cruise experience.

  • Deluxe Beverage Package
  • Refreshment Package
  • Classic Soda Package

I’ve discussed each package in detail, so it will better help you know which one you should buy.

1- Deluxe Beverage Package

The Deluxe Beverage Package is the top-tier drink package , including everything from the Refreshment Package and adding cocktails, spirits, liquors, beer, and wine by the glass.

With this package, you can get different drinks, like domestic, imported, and craft beer. Also, there’s a range of wines and popular spirit brands for drinks up to $14.

What I like the most is the discount on wine bottles. You can enjoy a 40% discount on bottles up to $100 and a 20% discount on bottles of wine over $100. That’s amazing and makes it easy for you to share a bottle during dinner.

Deluxe Beverage Package

Now, let’s talk about its usability. You can use the Deluxe Beverage Package in restaurants, bars, and at any venue with a bar server, as well as at Royal Caribbean’s private island destinations.

One crucial thing to note is that if one person in a stateroom buys this package, every one of the people of legal drinking age in the stateroom must buy the same package.

However, if any member is not of legal drinking age or doesn’t love alcohol, he/she can easily downgrade to a refreshment package.

The Legal drinking age On Royal Caribbean ships Is 21 years.

2- Classic Soda Package

Classic Soda Package

The Classic Soda Package is for real soda lovers . So, if you love enjoying the sea breeze with your favorite soda, this package is for you.

With this package, you have two options for getting sodas. One is the Freestyle soda machine, and the second is ordering soda at bars or restaurants.

However, the Freestyle machine is available only on these ships:

  • Adventure of the Seas
  • Allure of the Seas
  • Anthem of the Seas
  • Enchantment of the Seas
  • Explorer of the Seas
  • Freedom of the Seas
  • Grandeur of the Seas
  • Harmony of the Seas
  • Independence of the Seas
  • Jewel of the Seas
  • Mariner of the Seas
  • Navigator of the Seas
  • Oasis of the Seas
  • Quantum of the Seas
  • Ovation of the Seas
  • Rhapsody of the Seas
  • Symphony of the Seas

You get a special Coca-Cola cup with a chip below to use the soda machine. And amazingly, you’ll get unlimited refills 24/7. So don’t think twice before refilling. It’s free, soda lovers.

Also, there is a variety of soda flavors to choose from in the machine. So, enjoy what you like.

Besides the soda machine, you can order a glass of soda at any bar or restaurant on board. However, remember that each bar and restaurant’s soda flavors might vary.

Some places offer fountain sodas, while others offer cans.

But what I like most about this package is that you can enjoy the soda on Royal Caribbean’s Private island destinations (Perfect Day at Coco Cay and Labadee).

Additionally, you can  bring your soda on Caribbean Cruise . Royal Caribbean allows you to bring 12 cans of soda (or bottles up to 17 ounces) per person on board. Make sure you bring them in your carry-on luggage. So, if you’re on a tight budget and want to avoid a drink package, that’s the best option.

3- Refreshment Package

Refreshment Package

That’s the hottest drink package on Royal Caribbean, perfect for meeting the needs of kids or non-alcoholic individuals. Honestly, it’s my favorite too.

This package includes still and sparkling water, sodas (a special Coca-Cola cup for refills), mocktails, premium coffees, and teas.

In simpler terms, this package is essentially the same as the Deluxe Beverage Package but without the alcohol. It also doesn’t cover the shakes at Johnny Rockets, which are only included with the Deluxe Beverage Package.

With the Refreshment Package, you can enjoy more than just sodas. It covers smoothies, protein shakes at Vitality Café, and even sweet tea at Portside BBQ on Oasis of the Seas.

Now, here comes my favorite part. Craving a strawberry slushy? Order a virgin strawberry daiquiri. Likewise, you can also order hot cocoa and a mocha shake with vanilla ice cream, coffee, hazelnut syrup, and chocolate syrup.

4- Water Bottle Package

Please purchase the water package if you don’t want to bring your water bottles on the cruise.

In this package, you get 12- and 24-packs of one-liter bottles of Evian water. The bottles will be delivered to your cabin on embarkation day.

However, if you’re on a tight budget, no worries. There are complimentary drink stations where you can get filtered tap water. These are present in the buffet area and often in other locations on the ships. So you can go with these the filtered tap water instead of bottled water to quench your thirst.

You can also refill your water bottle at these stations. Just make sure not to do it directly, as it’s not sanitary. Use a clean glass from there for refilling.

When compared to Norwegian Cruise Line drink packages , Royal Caribbean offers fewer options, as NCL provides 5 drink packages.

Is A Royal Caribbean Beverage Package Worth It?

royal caribbean beverage package

Royal Caribbean’s beverage package is worth it if you’re a die-hard fan of drinks and don’t want to miss them on your cruise vacations.

However, avoiding the package can be an ideal option if you want drinks occasionally or just to taste sweet in your mouth.

So always consider your drinking habits to determine if a drink package will suit you.

But overall, these packages offer convenience and help manage your onboard expenses, providing a fixed cost for unlimited drinks. While, in terms of price, it’s slightly more expensive than Carnival’s Drink Packages .

In my opinion, these are worth the price for drink lovers.

Is There Any Limit In Drink Packages?

Royal Caribbean’s Beverage Packages have no limit, and guests can enjoy unlimited drinks as much as they want. But it’s important to note that only one drink at a time will be served with a drink package.

For example, if you want to relish a beer but crave something else simultaneously, you need to order each separately.

For group ordering, you can use the SeaPass cards of members to place a group order (only if all members have a drink package). You only have to provide proof that each person has the drink package, and they will verify by counting the number of drinks to match the number of group members.

Important Rules For Drink Packages:

Royal Caribbean imposes strict rules on the drink packages , especially the Deluxe Beverage Package, which includes alcoholic drinks.

No doubt you get unlimited drinks in the package, but you’ll have to wait 5 minutes between drinks. That rule rarely matters because bartenders are busy.

However, the Cruise Line wants to be polite with bartenders while drinking, and they will cut you off on violation. Their policies mentioned that the violation case will be handled in two ways.

First, if you seem drunk, a bartender may help by offering a bottle of water, coffee, or soda to slow you down. If you accept and take a break, you can order another drink after you’ve regained your self-control.

Conversely, if you show aggression or rudeness to the bartender, security will get involved on the spot. That could ruin your day by sending you to your room for a night or into a ship’s jail if you put up a fight (and perhaps being kicked off the ship in the next port).

Can I Share My Drink Package With Family?

Let me be clear: Royal Caribbean strictly forbids sharing the drink package with anyone else.

It means you can’t share a drink from your package with someone who doesn’t have a package.

Royal Caribbean warns guests that their package benefits will be revoked without a refund in case of violation.

So, stay sharp, my fellow cruisers, and don’t apply the “Sharing is Caring” rule here.

The package is intended for only the guest who buys it. You can pay for it individually alongside your drink package transaction if you want to treat someone.

But don’t be foolish by sharing drinks from your package; otherwise, you’ll also forfeit your package.

Can I Use My Drink Package At All Bars And Restaurants On The Cruise Ship?

drink package

You can use the Beverage packages at Royal Caribbean’s bars or lounges, cafés, Windjammer Cafe, Main Dining Room, and specialty restaurants.

Additionally, you can enjoy drinks at private destinations during normal business hours. These include relishing milkshakes at Johnny Rockets (Guests with Deluxe Package only) and Perfect Day at CocoCay and Labadee.

Pro Tip:  Don’t rely on using the Beverage package at the Mini Bar and Starbucks, as these are not included.

So, in short, the drink package works in all the bars and restaurants, including specialty ones. But the only exception here is ordering through room service, the mini bar, and Starbucks.

Can I Upgrade My Drink Package Once On Board The Cruise?

Yes, you can easily upgrade/downgrade your drink pack once on board the Royal Caribbean ship.

According to the Cruise Line’s policy, they typically refund the original cost of your already purchased package as Onboard Credit (OBC) and then charge you at the current rate for the new package you want.

In a few rare cases, you might only be charged the difference between what you initially paid for the previous and the current cost of the new package you want to upgrade.

However, I highly suggest checking with guest services or seeking help from onboard staff for specific details and policies during your cruise.

Time To Buy Drink Package

What Is The Best Time To Buy Drink Package?

You may purchase a beverage package up to 72 hours before you sail online at Royal Caribbean’s Cruise Planner. Also, you may purchase it onboard on the first day of your cruise.

But if your cruise is coming up soon, I would suggest going ahead and buying your favorite drink package unless Black Friday happens before you sail.

Black Friday deals on drink packages are the lowest you’ll find all year.

You can also look for special discounts up to 72 hours before you set sail. Before your departure date, check if any discounted plans are available. And surely, you’ll end up with a good deal.

What Is The Cancellation Policy For Royal Caribbean Drink Packages?

Regarding drink package cancellation , Royal Caribbean allows a change of mind. Guests can cancel their drink package up to two days before the cruise, excluding the actual sailing day.

For example, if your cruise leaves on a Friday, you have until Wednesday to adjust your plans. Easy peasy!

Packages canceled through Cruise Planner up to 2 days before the sail date are 100% refundable. And if you change your mind once onboard, refunds will be credited to the guest’s account.

Can I Use My Drink Package On Royal Caribbean’s Private Island?

You can use your Beverage Package on Royal Caribbean’s private islands, such as Perfect Day at CocoCay and Labadee.

The packages purchased onboard or through Cruise Planner will be active at these islands and honored anywhere.

I enjoyed drinks like Tito’s Vodka, pineapple juice, and guava syrup at CocoCay in the Bahamas.

These drinks will be honored during normal business hours at various locations on these private islands.

How can I track my usage and remaining drinks on my Royal Caribbean package?

drinks on royal caribbean cruise

How Can I Track My Usage And Remaining Drinks On My Royal Caribbean Package?

As mentioned, the Royal Caribbean Drink Packages offer unlimited drinks, so don’t worry about the remaining drinks.

But if you want to track your usage to better choose the best drink package for your next cruise, you can follow these ways:

  • Ask At Bars
  • Guest Services
  • Cruise Planner

What Non-alcoholic Options Are Included In The Drink Packages?

Royal Caribbean does offer non-alcoholic beverages for kids and other non-drinkers.

In fact, there are specific drink packages that only contain non-alcoholic drinks, including tea, coffee, and other refreshment beverages.

Does Royal Caribbean Offer Any Themed Or Seasonal Drink Packages?

No, Royal Caribbean doesn’t offer any themed or seasoned drink packages.

There are only three Drink packages: Soda, Refreshment, and Deluxe Beverage. These three packages cover all the drinks and are enough to cater to guests of all tastes.

Zoe’s Expert Tips On Royal Caribbean Drink Packages

There’s a big perk for Crown and Anchor Society members regarding complimentary drinks.

These guests can enjoy premium drinks at no cost in various lounges like Concierge Lounge, Diamond Lounge, or Suite Lounge.

Between 5 pm and 8 pm, these VIP spots serve complimentary alcoholic drinks during happy hours. It’s like a private club at sea where you can unwind with a free tipple or two.

1- Diamond Members:  Diamond guests can avail of four free alcoholic drinks or non-alcoholic drinks every day. It requires 80 cruise points.

2- Diamond Plus Members:  Diamond Plus Members will get five drinks daily at no cost. It requires 175 cruise points.

3- Pinnacle Members:  These guests can enjoy six free drinks daily, a fantastic bonus. It requires 700 cruise points.

Each night on a cruise gives you one point, and for suite guests, either Junior or Grand, you get 2 points per night.

Can I Use My Drink Package During Excursions Or Onshore Activities?

No. While the drink packages work on Royal Caribbean’s private islands of Labadee and Perfect Day at CocoCay, they don’t work when you’re in other ports of call.

The more ports of call you visit, the less time you have onboard to take advantage of the drink packages.

So make sure you’re managing your time properly. Take full advantage of the drink package while making the most of your cruise.

Is It Better To Get Drink Package Or Individual Drinks?

If you are a die-hard fan of drinks and want unlimited refills, go with the drink package. Otherwise, for occasional drinkers, individual purchasing may be more economical.

Are Specialty Teas And Coffees Included In the Drink Package?

Yes, with the Coffee Cards, Refreshments, and Deluxe Beverage Package, you can have specialty teas and coffees onboard any bar and restaurant. However, these packages don’t include drinks from Starbucks or minibars.

I’m sure this article has provided you with all the information you need about Royal Caribbean Drink packages.

Our Guide to Royal Caribbean Beverage Packages

Last updated on February 9th, 2024 at 05:53 pm

Against a tropical-looking background, there are bottles of different types of alcohol, beers and wine, plus glasses of beer, champagne and cocktails.

If you’re planning a cruise with Royal Caribbean , one decision you should make before departure is whether or not to purchase one of the Royal Caribbean beverage packages. Cruises might wonder if drink packages are a good idea , and the information in this article will help you to decide for yourself.

Royal Caribbean offers a variety of beverage packages to choose from, each with its own set of included drinks and perks. In this post, we’ll go over the different options and help you decide which one is right for you.

All of Royal Caribbean’s beverage packages include unlimited sodas, teas, and coffees, as well as a 15% discount on bottled water, energy drinks, and specialty cocktails.

In addition, all packages include a discount on wine bottles and tastings at the Vintages wine bar.

Be sure to check ahead of sailing with Royal Caribbean, as they will sometimes offer special “sale” pricing for purchasing your beverage packages before sailing.

The Fine Print In Beverage Packages

There are a couple of stipulations for RC’s beverage packages that you will find in most all other cruise lines, too.

You must be 21 years of age or older to purchase a beverage package that includes alcohol.

Beverage packages of any type are not transferable and cannot be shared. Guests of legal drinking age in the same stateroom are required to purchase the same alcoholic beverage package and there is little wiggle room with this stipulation.

Gratuity and taxes may be extra, and packages do not include room service, mini bar items or souvenir glassware.

The SeaPass that you receive when you board Royal Caribbean will have a sticker or a printed verification of the package that you purchased, so keep this pass handy.

Coca-Cola Freestyle Machines Are Lots of Fun!

Royal Caribbean serves Coke products onboard, and in a fun way. You will find Coca-Cola Freestyle machines on its ships, but in order to you them, you have to have a drink package.

Upon boarding, you’ll get a special souvenir cup that “unlocks” the machine when you go to use it. These stand-alone drink dispensers will mix almost any Coca-Cola drink for you.

There are over 100 different soda/flavor combinations that you can mix. You can get a Diet Coke with lemon, or have your Sprite mixed with cherry or even grape Fanta.

Remember that any prices listed in this post are current as of this writing, January 2023. The cost will also vary by ship and sailing.

Now, let’s take a look at the different package options:

Deluxe Beverage Package

Against a tropical-looking background, there are bottles of different types of alcohol, beers and wine, plus glasses of beer, champagne and cocktails.

This package includes everything in the Classic Soda Package, plus a wide selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.

RCL states that you must be 21 years of age or older to purchase this beverage package. The selection includes cocktails, spirits, beers, and wines by the glass, as well as smoothies, frozen drinks, and premium coffees.

There is no daily limit for drinks with the Deluxe Beverage Package, however, you are able to order just one drink at a time. Ordering multiples, even if they are non-alcoholic, is not permitted.

This beverage package includes several popular liquor like Grey Goose, Tito’s Vodka, Patron, Johnny Walker Black Label and Dewar’s 12 Scotch.

You will also receive a 40% discount on bottled wines priced up to $100 and 20% discount on wine prices above $100.

The Deluxe Beverage Package gives you beverages with a value of up to $13 for select ships and sail dates. Deluxe Beverage Packages are $109 per person per day. When you add the 18% gratuity, you are at $128.62 per day.

There are some items that are not included in the Deluxe Beverage Package. The exceptions are:

  • Drinks from Starbucks stores on ship
  • Room service beverages
  • Mini-bar items
  • Specialty beers
  • Beverages more than $13 per glass
  • Duty-free shop bottles of liquor

Refreshment Package

Frosty beverages, sodas, orange juice, cup of coffee and bottle of water.

This package option includes unlimited sodas, teas, and coffees, as well as a 15% discount on bottled water, energy drinks, and specialty non-alcoholic cocktails.

This includes the Coca-Cola Freestyle machines. The Refreshment Package also includes still and sparkling water and fresh-squeezed juices.

This package is $39 a person per day with an 18% gratuity, making it $46.02.

Classic Soda Package

Royal Caribbean souvenir cups filled with soda and ice with a straw stuck out the top. 2 other glasses have their lids on. All are sitting on a bed of ice.

This package gives you fountain soda and refills at any venue. You will also get a Coca-Cola souvenir cup and you can use it at the Coca-Cola Freestyle machine.

It also includes a discount on wine bottles and tastings at the Vintages wine bar. The Classic Soda package is $15 per day per person with a 18% gratuity, making it $17.70.

How To buy A Beverage Package On Royal Caribbean

If you have decided to purchase a package, there are three ways to do so.

  • Call the cruise line and have it added to your trip before you sail
  • Go to the Royal Caribbean website and access your online account to buy the package before you board.
  • Wait until you board and visit one of the tables that sign passengers up for packages.

While you can purchase a package once you arrive on board,  you’ll pay full price, but they are available to purchase throughout the sailing with at least 4 days remaining (which means you can’t just splurge on the last day).

You can purchase a beverage package up to 72 hours before you sail. If you change your mind, you can cancel your order through Cruise Planne r up to 2 days before you sail to get a 100% refund.

Check online, or with RC before your cruise, as RC will sometimes offer a discount on packages purchased before boarding.

Should You Purchase A Drink Package On Royal Caribbean?

So, which package, if any, is right for you? It really depends on your drinking habits and preferences.

If you’re a light drinker or just want unlimited sodas and coffees, the Classic Soda Package may be sufficient. If you prefer a wider selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, the Deluxe Beverage Package may be a better fit.

Try to consider the amount that you will drink (day after day) while on the cruise. It’s calculated that in order to “break even” you would need to drink approximately 15 drinks a day.

It sounds like a lot, but if you consider fresh juices, espresso-based coffees, etc. that you might drink for breakfast, in addition to other sodas or cocktails throughout the day, you can see how 15 is doable.

If you are on a cruise that has several ports and you plan on a few excursions, that might not make as much sense to purchase a package if you have a lot of time off the ship. Shorter cruises might be a better option when considering a beverage package.

Ultimately, the decision to purchase a beverage package with Royal Caribbean is up to you. Consider your drinking habits, the cost of the package, and the length of your cruise to determine which option is the best fit for you.

Can I bring additional bottles of wine on board?

Yes, passengers are allowed to bring two additional 750ml bottles of wine or champagne per stateroom. To learn more about beverages that you can bring onboard, read this!

Is my beverage package able to be used at the Starbucks onboard?

Unfortunately, no. Starbucks coffee is not included.

Can I use my beverage package at Coco Beach Club at Coco Cay ?

Yes, beverage packages purchased on board can be used throughout Coco Cay.

Beverages Already Included In Your Cruise Fare

So what free drinks on Royal Caribbean will you find? Royal Caribbean complimentary drinks covered by your cruise fare include milk, some juices (not fresh-squeezed), hot chocolate, and regular coffee and tea (i.e, not specialty beverages like lattes, cappuccinos, or chai). You will also find some fountain-style drinks at the buffet. You’ll find non-carbonated drinks like juice or juice-based punch, but no sodas. And, of course, you should also be able to get regular non-bottled water.

Bringing Your Own Beverages Aboard A Royal Caribbean Cruise

One simple way to save money on cruise beverages is to bring some onboard yourself. And Royal Caribbean allows guests to BYOB a  limited quantity of non-alcoholic and/or alcoholic beverages.

BYOB Alcoholic Beverages

Royal Caribbean permits guests to bring  two sealed bottles (750 ml) of wine or champagne per stateroom. Note that boxed wine and other containers are prohibited. And Royal Caribbean prohibits guests from bringing any kind of beer or hard liquor onboard for consumption or any other use.

Two full bottles may be sufficient for your entire cruise, depending on how much wine you typically drink. Royal Caribbean conveniently provides a corkscrew so that you can enjoy it in your room. Or alternatively, you can bring it with you to dinner and pay a corkage fee of $15 per bottle. If you don’t finish the bottle, the dining room staff will hold it for you for the next night(s). Also, if you end up dining in a different venue from where you originally purchased your bottle of wine, you can have it transferred to your new location. Just as the wait staff.

These BYOB allowances for alcohol only apply at embarkation . The crew will confiscate any alcohol purchased while you are in port after sailing. They will store it until the end of your cruise.

What About Sneaking On Alcoholic Beverages?

Be forewarned: A harsher rule applies if you try to bring on or sneak on excess alcohol at embarkation.

Alcoholic beverages seized on embarkation day will not be returned.

You should also be aware that security personnel may inspect containers (water bottles, soda bottles, mouthwash, luggage, etc.) and will dispose of containers holding alcohol. Guests who violate any alcohol policies (over-consume, provide alcohol to people under the legal drinking age, demonstrate irresponsible behavior, or attempt to conceal alcoholic items at security and or luggage checkpoints or any other time), can be disembarked (expelled) or denied boarding altogether. All at their own expense.

 BYOB Non-Alcoholic Beverages

Guests may also carry on 12 cans or cartons of non-alcoholic beverages in their hand luggage.

Non-alcoholic beverages may not exceed 12 standard (17 oz.) cans, bottles, or cartons per stateroom. Milk and distilled water brought on for infant, medical, or dietary use are permitted.

Cost Of Individual Drinks On Royal Caribbean

Here’s a basic broad overview of typical drink prices found on the larger Royal Caribbean ships. (Based on a December 2022 sailing.)

  • Bottled water – $3 to $5
  • Soft drinks – $3.25/can (sports & energy drinks – $4-$6)
  • Specialty coffees – $4-$5
  • smoothies/mocktails – $5-$6
  • Beer – $7-$8
  • Wine – starts at $9/glass. (prices range from $9 to $25; many moderate vintages that folks would order by name are around $17)
  • Hard liquor – $7-$12+
  • Cocktails – $10-$14

Update Note December 2022

The photo below was taken at the end of December. It is a photo of the drink menu at Playmaker’s and provides an example of recent pricing.

Note that all drink orders will be assessed an automatic gratuity of 18%, which will be added to the prices above.

Specific Royal Caribbean Drink Packages

Royal Caribbean offers three main beverage packages that may be purchased online before you sail, or onboard the ship.

While Royal Caribbean quotes pricing for its beverage packages on a “per day” basis, packages are only sold on a cruise length basis. This means that you will be assessed a charge equal to all of the days of your itinerary (plus an automatic 18% gratuity).

Royal Caribbean Deluxe Beverage Package

Royal Caribbean’s most inclusive (and most expensive) package is the Deluxe Beverage Package. It covers both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. This includes soft drinks, non-alcoholic cocktails, bottled water, sparkling water, specialty coffees and teas, and fresh-squeezed juices. Guests will also receive a souvenir cup that can be used with onboard Coca-Cola Freestyle machines .

As for alcohol-based beverages, the package includes cocktails, spirits, hard liquor, beer, and wine by the glass.

The package will cover the price of individual drinks up to $13. This package also provides discounted bottles of wine. Guests receive 40% off of wines under $100 and 20% off wines exceeding $100 per bottle.

Specific pricing for beverage packages varies based on ships and itineraries. The onboard pricing for this package ranges from $63 – $98.00 per day.

Royal Caribbean Deluxe Beverage Package includes a wide range of well-known brands, and you’ll find an updated list of current brands on Royal Caribbean’s website.

Some examples:

  • Vodka: A bsolute, Belvedere, Grey Goose, Tito’s, Stoli
  • Scotch: Chivas (12), Dewar’s (12), Glenfiddich, Johnnie Walker Black, Glenlivet
  • Rum: Bacardi, Bacardi 8, Captain Morgan’s, Malibu

Ideal Guest Purchaser

This package is best for folks who regularly drink alcoholic beverages and who will likely consume at least six beverages daily, with most of those including max-priced alcohol.

Guests Who Should Skip It

You should probably pass on this package if you drink less than five alcoholic beverages per day.

Royal Caribbean Refreshment Package

This package essentially includes all of the same beverages as covered by the Deluxe Package except for beverages containing alcohol. So, it includes soft drinks, non-alcoholic cocktails, bottled water, sparkling water, specialty coffees and teas, and fresh-squeezed juices.

This package also includes the souvenir cup for the onboard Coca-Cola Freestyle machines.

The onboard pricing for this package ranges from $29.00 – $38.00/per day.

This package is best for folks who like to stay hydrated. If you drink eight bottles of water daily, you will almost certainly break even. Likewise, if you consume some combination of bottled water, soda, lattes, and the occasional mocktail, you will break even if you only consume at least 5 to 6 drinks a day.

You should probably look for alternatives if you primarily drink water and coffee-based drinks. For instance, a Water Package and a Coffee Card would be considerably cheaper.

Classic Soda Package

This is Royal Caribbean’s most simple and least expensive beverage package. It covers sodas only. No bottled water, juices, or specialty coffees. Just soda. As with the larger two packages, this package comes with the souvenir cup for the onboard Coca-Cola Freestyle machines.

Prices for this package range from $12.99 – $15.00/per day.

Who Should or Shouldn’t Get The Soda Package

In theory, you should break even if you drink at least 3-4 sodas a day.

I have long held a love-hate relationship with this particular package. It’s available to anyone, but the most obvious target audience is children. And I have procured a soda package for at least one of my kids on many occasions. And pretty much every time that I have outright paid for it (vs receiving it as some kind of free perk), I’ve been left with the lingering suspicion that I didn’t quite get my money’s worth. Yet still, I persist.

A key problem that we have repeatedly encountered with this particular package is that those nifty Freestyle machines are often inconveniently located, out of the preferred beverage, or out of service completely.

Additional Royal Caribbean Beverage Options

The water package.

Originally, this package was called the “Evian Water Package,” but that changed in 2021.  Now it’s just called the “Water Package.”  That’s likely because the package no longer necessarily features Evian-branded water. For instance, on a summer 2021 sailing, the packages being offered featured cans of Dasani water. (Check out our 2021 Review of Odyssey of the Seas .)

Regardless of the brand of water featured, the package itself is very simple and specific. Basically, it’s a bulk order of 12 or 24 cans or bottles of water that’s delivered to your stateroom. You’ll find a variety of options for Royal Caribbean bottled water on board in terms of size, brands, and packaging. But the Water Package only covers one type of water.

If you are interested in other types of Royal Caribbean bottled water, you will need to get the Refreshment Package or go ala carte.

The Cafe Select Coffee Card

With this coffee card, you have the opportunity to order 15 different specialty coffees of your choice. With each order, the server will punch or stamp your card. One of the benefits of this card is that you can easily (and openly) share the benefits with other guests. The card is not specific to any one passenger. Depending on your coffee beverage of choice, this card will save you up to 50% off the regular price of individually purchased coffees.

The Coffee Cards do not work inside Starbucks.

For a 6 or 7-night Caribbean cruise, this card is typically priced at $31.

Discounted Mini-Bar Packages

This is not promoted as a stand-alone package. Nor is it available to order prior to boarding (yet). (Also, it apparently is not available on every sailing.) Basically, you have the opportunity to place a bulk order for non-alcoholic beverages to stock your in-room mini-bar.

Royal Caribbean Beverage Package | photo of mini-bar order form

You can save money by making bulk mini-bar purchases. These prices work out to less than the ala cart prices outside your room. Note that the quoted prices already include gratuity. However, the $7.95 room service charge will be assessed for delivery.

We love having beverages on hand and found this to be a good deal.

  • 24 cans soft drinks – $47 ($1.96 per can)
  • 12 pack energy drinks – $42 ($3.5 per can)
  • 12 bottles of juice – $42 ($3.5 per bottle)
  • Sparkling water – 12 pack for $30 ($2.5 per bottle)

Crown & Anchor Privileges For Diamond Level And Above

Cruisers with certain loyalty status can receive vouchers for complimentary beverages each day. Specifically, Crown & Anchor members who are at the Diamond level or above can get 4 free drinks each day, Diamond Plus receive 5 free drinks, and Pinnacle receive 6. These vouchers are available at any venue in the ship and at any time of day. They do not, however, rollover. The benefit comes preloaded on your cruise card.

Saving Money On A Royal Caribbean Drink Package

Royal Caribbean usually provides many opportunities to purchase its drink packages at discounted prices prior to boarding your cruise. You would have to be really unlucky or not paying attention to miss out on an opportunity to purchase a discounted drink package.

There is rarely any reason for anyone to pay full price for a Royal Caribbean beverage package. You can almost always purchase at a discount online prior to your sailing. ( And this continues to hold true for sailings throughout 2023. Booked guests have received discount offers along the lines described below. )

You can typically find discounts in the 25-30% range offered at several points throughout the year.

We almost always have at least one Royal Caribbean future cruise booked and receive a steady stream of emails about deals on onboard purchases throughout the year. By way of example, these were some of the email offers we received prior to the 2020 stop-sail order.

The best discounts were:

  • 25% off the Deluxe Package (buy one deluxe package and get 2nd for 50% off)
  • 30% off the Refreshment Package
  • 50% off the soda package (when bundled with a Voom internet package).
  • You could also get 30% off of a bundled Voom package with the deluxe beverage package.

Specifically, I found this offer for:

  • Black Friday/Cyber Monday
  • Labor Day sale
  • July 4th sale
  • “Flash” sale in June.

A sale with smaller discounts was offered in October:

  • 20% of deluxe beverage package
  • 10% off refreshment package
  • 30% off classic soda package

Note that if you had actually bought in October at the “higher” discounted prices, you could have gotten a refund and purchased under the better deal offered during November.

For sailings in 2023, we received notice of online discounts along the following lines:

  • Deluxe beverage package — Buy 1, get 1 for 50% off ( best deal offered as of October 2023 )
  • Refreshment package — 20% off
  • Deluxe package + 1 Voom device — 25% off
  • Classic soda package + 1 Voom device — 30% off
  • 30% off Deluxe Beverage Package
  • 50% off Refreshment Package
  • 35% off a bundle of Deluxe Beverage Package + 1 Voom device

How A Royal Caribbean Drink Package Works

When you purchase a Royal Caribbean beverage package, you will receive a notation on your cruise card. If you purchased online, it should be printed on the actual SeaPass card you receive at embarkation. Otherwise, a sticker will be affixed to your card. You simply provide your card to access benefits.

Royal Caribbean has relatively simple rules that apply to its drink packages: generally, you can only order one drink at a time (unless you are requesting a bottle of water in addition to some other drink), and there’s no drink package sharing. Otherwise, there’s no cap on the number of drinks you can order in a day and no minimum amount of time you must wait between ordering drinks.

Note that if one person in a cabin purchases an alcoholic drink package, then all adults of legal drinking age in the same cabin under the same booking number must purchase a drink package. If an adult is a non-drinker, you can call customer service and explain the situation. In which case the second person may be allowed to purchase the Refreshment Package instead of the Deluxe Package.

Also, beverage packages do not apply to room service, the minibar, or any Starbucks facility.

So, Is a Royal Caribbean Drink Package Worth It For You? Sample Scenarios.

For some prior 6-night Caribbean sailings, guests received discount offers described as being 30% off onboard prices. The advertised discounted price for the Deluxe Package was $57 per day. The Refreshment Package was priced at a discounted $22 per day. And the discounted Soda Package was advertised at $8.99 per day.

So, for a 6-night cruise, the Deluxe Package would be a discounted $342, the Refreshment Package would be $132, and the Soda Package would be $53.94. Each of these packages would also incur an additional 18% gratuity charge.

The maximum beverage price covered by the Deluxe Package is $13. So you would need to order 5 max-priced drinks each day to break even. If you drink basic wine at $9-$10, you would need to consume 6 glasses daily to break even. For beer and liquor at an average price of $7-$8, you would need to consume 7 or 8 such drinks daily. Many folks would find these consumption levels rather challenging.

By comparison, the Refreshment Package at a discounted price of $22 per day seems well-positioned to offer full value. Someone who drank 4 or 5 bottles of water a day, plus 2 or 3 sodas and a latte would easily get their money’s worth.

17 Common & Frequently Asked Questions About Royal Caribbean Beverage Packages

(1) where can you use the drink package.

You can use your drink package privileges at any venue onboard your Royal Caribbean ship that’s outside of your cabin with the exception of Starbuck’s facilities. Room service and mini-bar are not included. You can also use your drink package at all Royal Caribbean private destinations including Perfect Day at CocoCay in the Bahamas and Labadee in Haiti.

(2) What happens if you lose your soda cup?

If you lose the soda cup that’s required to access the freestyle soda machine, you can purchase a replacement for $9.95.

(3) Are you expected to tip when you receive drinks?

All Royal Caribbean beverage packages have an 18% gratuity automatically assessed. And, any individual drinks purchased onboard also receive the same automatic gratuity assessment. Nevertheless, when you sign the receipt for your drinks, you will notice that there is a separate line available where you can write in an additional tip. This is completely at your discretion. In all circumstances, you will have already paid an 18% gratuity, and you are welcome to go beyond that amount by writing in more tip if you think it is warranted.

(4) Must all adults purchase drink packages?

If one person purchases an alcoholic drink package, then all adults of legal drinking age in the same cabin under the same booking number must purchase a drink package. If an adult is a non-drinker, you can call customer service and explain the situation. In which case the second person may be allowed to purchase the Refreshment Package instead of the alcohol Deluxe Package.

(5) Is there a drink package day pass?

No. And beverage package must be purchased for the duration of your cruise. You may purchase a package while onboard (if 4 or more days remaining) and pay a prorated charge, but the package will be priced for all remaining days of your sailing.

(6) Does the drink package include any good liquor?

Yes. Royal Caribbean publishes a list of brands available through its beverage package. This includes brands like Grey Goose, Patron Silver, Glenlivet, and Maker’s Mark.

In addition, other premium brands may be purchased at a surcharge. The beverage package covers any drink up to $12. Any overage will be charged to your onboard account.

(7) Are there any limits on the number of drinks you can consume under a package?

Unlike some cruise lines, there are no numeric caps on the number of drinks that you can consume with a Royal Caribbean beverage package. However, Royal Caribbean may refuse to serve additional alcoholic beverages to any guest who does not consume alcohol responsibly, including those who have purchased an all-inclusive beverage package.

(8) Does the Royal Caribbean drink package include Starbucks?

No, not if purchased at the actual Starbucks store. However, starting in the summer of 2022 , some of the regular venues started offering coffee-based drinks using Starbucks coffee.

(9) Does the Royal Caribbean drink package include shots?

Yes. Up to $13 per drink. Any amount that exceeds $13 will be charged to your SeaPass card.

(10) Can I cancel a Royal Caribbean drink package?

If you purchase a drink package online, you can cancel and receive a refund prior to boarding.

(11) What’s the best deal on a Royal Caribbean drink package?

Beverage packages purchased online via the Cruise planner will be less than the onboard package price. In addition, Royal Caribbean often offers sales that will offer discounts in the 25-35% range (from onboard prices). These are often found during the summer months and around Black Friday/Cyber Monday.

The best deals we have seen are the 30-50% off offers discussed above.

(12) Can you use your drink package on CocoCay?

Yes! Some cruise lines do not extend your drink package privileges to their private islands. So, if your ship stops at one of those private islands, it’s just like another port day. You must pay for any beverages ala cart. But not Royal Caribbean! Guests have full use of their beverage packages at all venues on CocoCay (as well as Labadee).

(13) Can I bring a 12-pack of soda on Royal Caribbean?

Yes. Guests may bring a 12-pack of soda on the ship in their carry-on luggage. But you can’t carry on more than 12 cans or bottles per stateroom. And the bottles or cans must be a standard size no larger than 17 ounces.

(14) Can you share drink packages on Royal Caribbean?

No. Per cruise line rules, no sharing of drink packages is permitted. And, according to the fine print, guests who are caught abusing this rule may have their beverage package privileges revoked (without any refund).

(15) Can just one person buy a drink package on Royal Caribbean?

It depends. If you are buying an alcohol package and there are other guests of legal drinking age on the same reservation in the same cabin, then no. All adults of the legal drinking age must also purchase a package. However, for true non-drinkers, it may be possible to request permission through customer service to purchase a non-alcohol package.

(16) Can you drink at 18 on Royal Caribbean?

On certain sailings, guests who are 18-years-old may drink alcohol on Royal Caribbean. This is limited to sailings that originate from South America, Europe, Asia, Australia, or New Zealand. For any sailing that originates from North America, the drinking age is 21. (Interestingly, there’s a different policy for gambling. With the exception of Alaska sailings, you only have to be 18 to play in the casino regardless of where the sailing originates.)

(17) Is water free on Royal Caribbean?

The regular water that you receive in a cup or glass is free. As for bottled water, unless you have a beverage package that includes bottled water, you will be charged.

So What’s The Bottom Line On Whether Royal Caribbean Drink Package Is Worth It?

A Royal Caribbean beverage package can be “worth it” in terms of the economic value, provided you meet certain criteria:

  • Buy in advance (to receive the online discounts)
  • Buy the right package
  • Any adult in the same cabin wants a similar package
  • Cruise itinerary includes many days/hours are on the ship or private island
  • Drink more than specialty coffee
  • Drink more than bottled water
  • Drink most beverages outside of your room
  • Aren’t a diamond member or above who typically drinks 4 beverages or less and usually in the evening/dinner hours.
  • Remember that you don’t have to double tip

Closing Thoughts:

When evaluating whether a drink package will be worth it to you, consider your goals. Are you seeking cost savings or convenience? If you’re primarily seeking cost savings, then use the information above to do the basic math that applies to your situation. If you are unlikely to drink more than 5 beverages each and every day, then you are unlikely to get full economic value from a Royal Caribbean drink package.

But other reasons may nevertheless motivate a purchase. For instance, pure convenience. Also, many folks love the freedom to experiment that comes with not having to worry about whether you’re wasting individual drinks.

Cruise Line Drink Package Calculator

There’s not much that’s more popular on a cruise ship than drinking. Bars are everywhere, and the party atmosphere mixed with the relaxation of vacation means the booze is flowing.

Cruise line drink package calculator

Whether you are sitting poolside with a fruity cocktail, or maybe playing at the casino with a beer, or having a glass of wine with dinner, having a drink just feels natural on a cruise.

It almost feels wrong not to be cooling off without a tasty beverage. But the truth is that the cost of drinks can add up on a ship. The solution to that problem?

The drink package.

Drink Spending Quickly Adds Up

If you’ve never been on a cruise, then don’t be surprised by the price of alcohol on the ship. Want a beer? They usually run $6-8, and then you add on the mandatory gratuity of 15-20%. Cocktails can easily run $10-14, and a glass of wine can be $8-12 — and even much more.

Even a soda or a bottle of water will run you $3. If you are a steady drinker, then it’s not hard to spend $100 or more on drinks per day.

Thankfully the cruise lines have rolled out drink packages. These packages allow you to pay one set fee per day and drink as much as you want. So instead of worrying about a bar bill, you know exactly what you’ll spend ahead of time.

And when it’s time to get a drink? Just head up to the bar and order what you like.

Of course, there is some fine print with the drink packages, ranging from how each adult in a cabin must buy one if one person does, to the drinks included with the deal. ( See our complete guide to drink packages here .)

But the biggest hesitation before getting the package for many people is whether or not they will get their money’s worth.

Estimate If Drink Packages Are A Deal For You

Drink packages are expensive, ranging from $60-80 per day in most cases. Some go up to more than $100 per day! Since you’re charged each day of the cruise, you’ll have to drink this amount’s worth each and every day of the trip over the course of the cruise.

Rightfully, many people aren’t sure if they will actually save money by getting the package deal.

Below, we have a calculator that can help you estimate whether or not a drink package is worth the money. Simply select your cruise line and estimate the number of drinks you’ll have per day to see what it would cost to purchase them individually.

Since there are so many different prices among drinks, we’ve used estimated average prices to give you an idea of what you might spend. Your actual drinks will vary in price, but this gives you a ballpark idea of what you might spend.

Compare the amount you’ll spend each day above with the cost of each drink package per day. Note that prices will vary in some cases, including discounts for ordering before the cruise. As well, some lines offer different package levels. To keep things simple, we’ve tried to use the most common prices we think you’ll see.

  • Carnival : $59.95 per day ($70.74 with gratuity) | $69.95 per day ($82.54 with gratuity) on trips of five days or fewer
  • Celebrity : $89.00 per day ($106.80 with gratuity)
  • Norwegian : $109.00 per day ($130.80 with gratuity)
  • Princess : $64.99 per day ($76.70 with gratuity)
  • Royal Caribbean : Varies; ~$75-94 per day ($88-112 with gratuity)
  • MSC : $64.00 per day (no gratuity is bought before boarding)

Keep in mind that these are all estimates as drink prices vary by cruise line and what you specifically drink. If you are in the ballpark of the daily cost of the drink package, it is likely to be worth it for you.

Frequently Asked Questions About Drink Packages

Cocktail drink

While drink packages sound simple, there are actually a lot of rules. These include rules on the number of drinks allowed, which drinks you can buy, and much more. Read our complete drink package guide here to learn everything you need to know before you buy. We’ve answered some common questions below.

Does everyone in a cabin have to purchase a drink package if one person does? Usually, the answer is yes. While it does depend on your specific cruise line, most make each adult in a cabin purchase a package if one person does. This helps discourage drink sharing where one person buys the package and gives other people free drinks.

Keep this in mind when deciding whether or not to buy a package. If one person drinks and another doesn’t, it means you’re essentially doubling the cost of the drink package without any added benefit.

Can I share drinks using a drink package? No. No cruise line allows sharing of drinks on a package. If caught sharing, you could lose your drink package. Plus, since most lines make you purchase the deal for all adults in a cabin, there isn’t usually a benefit to sharing since everyone will have a package anyway.

Can I purchase the package for just some days of the cruise? No. Drink packages are sold for the entire trip, not just some days. That means if you are on a week-long cruise, you can’t just purchase a drink package for a few days here and there. That’s why it’s important that you estimate what you’ll drink EACH day of the cruise on average.

Also keep in mind that except for some private islands run by the cruise lines, the packages don’t work off the ship. So if you are in port all day, that is time that you can’t use the package.

Are there discounts on drink packages? Yes. Often cruise lines will offer a discount off the headline price if you purchase the package before boarding. After you book your cruise, you can either call the cruise line or login to your cruise line account. There you should be able to find the package to purchase. In addition to a likely discount, buying ahead of time also means the package is ready to go for you the moment you get on the ship.

Where can I find more information about specific packages? Cruzely has a number of resources for different drink packages. We have more about specific cruise line drink packages here:

  • Complete Guide to Carnival’s CHEERS! Package
  • Everything to Know About Royal Caribbean Drink Package
  • Complete Guide to Norwegian Cruise Line Drink Packages
  • Complete Guide to MSC Cruises Drink Packages

Are drink packages worth it? We wish there was a definitive answer, but in reality, it depends.

For some people the package is absolutely worth it. If you’re the sort of person who always has a drink in your hand during vacation, you’ll likely get your money’s worth. However, for many others, the package isn’t a good deal. Those who might have a few drinks here and there — even several a day — likely won’t drink enough to make the deal worth buying.

Does non-alcoholic beer count towards your 15 or not? I can’t seem to get an answer on that one.

Carnival’s rule specifically states “alcoholic drinks.” If it’s non-alcoholic, it shouldn’t count toward 15.

If I carry champagne or wine, can I drink them outside the stateroom?

Yes, technically there is a corkage fee. But if you pour it in the room and then walk around with it, it’s doubtful anyone would give a second notice.

I just priced out two sailings with NCL and got prices WITH the Free at Sea package (includes drinks), and WITHOUT. One sailing ended up costing $40/day for drink package (whole FAS package), and the other was $49/day. Where are you coming up with the $109/$130, with gratuities, per day costs? I referenced your info on a NCL Facebook group and was promptly corrected! LOL

Here is the standalone pricing from NCL. It’s less expensive to buy with free at sea.

https://www.ncl.com/onboard-packages/beverage-packages

They cam up with the bogus $109 price so they could charge you more on the mandatory 20% tip.

With a cheers drink package that allows 15 drinks a day, if I was to purchase a Cruise Cash Bar card am I still limited to only 15 drinks a day?

That I’m not sure about! Would love for you to test it out and let everyone know. I can’t drink 15 a day!

Are you still allowed to bring a case of water?

Are you allowed to bring a bottle of wine per person?

Depends on the cruise line. Most, however, do let you bring on those items. You can find more info here:

https://www.cruzely.com/bringing-water-or-soda-on-the-ship-carnival-royal-caribbean-princess-and-norwegian/ https://www.cruzely.com/cruise-line-alcohol-policies/

Does Carnival have water fountains that I can use to re-fill a water bottle? And do they offer non-bottled water as an option at meals? While I like my beer and my wife will have a cocktail or wine….I am not sure if we would drink enough alcohol to justify the cost. We do drink a lot of water, though and if bottled water is the only way…..??

Yes, there are cups and water machines available. And while you could fill a reusable water bottle, you are usually asked not to do that for health reasons. If sailing Carnival, I like to just order a couple of 12 packs of bottled water ($5 each) for the room. That way I always have some around.

The amount you have as the price of Celebrity drink package is not accurate since they now include a basic drink package. To get premium is only $30/day above the Always Included.

Morning, do Cunard do a discount on drinks package x

So on a 7 day 6 night cruise you get charged 7 days at say $100 ($700), but get thrown off the ship at 8 am on the 7th day. correct?! So I spent $700 for 6 days of drinking. Am I missing something? I have been searching the web for a week and no one brings up this point

The boarding day is considered the first day of the cruise. So when you get on the ship, the drink package is available. You aren’t charged for the day you debark. So a 7-day cruise that departs on Sunday, you are charged for Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday.

NCL once again has gone completely over the edge charging $118.00 per day for their drink package. Almost twice the price of Carnival. Most lines are between $65-$85 per day. I personally like Princess who charges around $70 per day including gratuity. Even better if your room mate doesn’t drink you do not have to purchase two drink packages. As far as I Princess is the only line to do it and I commend them for it. If you like to drink stay away from NCL. I have 50 years of cruising under my belt and know all the deals.

So I have the Premium Drink package as part of my “Free” at Sea but from what I’ve read, it does not include specialty coffees from Starbucks, bottled water, or energy drinks. If I were to have a specialty Coffee each morning (either tea or coffee latte) and usually drink 4-6 bottles of water a day, and do an energy drink if I am exercising, does it make sense to upgrade to Premium Plus package? I can upgrade for $174 (divided by 5 days would be roughly $35 a day) Based on calculator if I drink the above in addition to my current package, it would cost me about $24/day + tip assuming each of these items are priced at $3 (guessing Starbucks drinks may not be…). Should I upgrade if they will allow me to do so without forcing my cabin mate to upgrade as well?

That’s a tough one. For one, it’s not certain, but it’s likely your cabin mate would have to upgrade as well. Also, don’t forget the extra gratuity on the more expensive package, if you aren’t already including it.

can you get water in a glass with ice from the bars or do you have to have a drink package

Sure, they will give you one. You can also head to the buffet and get one.

Do the non-alcoholic packages follow the same rules as the alcoholic packages? Also is it best to purchase cases of bottled water or would there be enough bottles accessible that you wouldn’t need that?

What specific rules are you referring to? We like to purchase water to be sent to the room before we arrive. That way we don’t have to carry it around when boarding.

Is specialty coffee from the coffee shops included?

Yes, almost always.

What types of drinks are included if you dont buy a drink pass

Water, tea, coffee, and some juices are available in the dining rooms/buffet.

Can you tell why Carnival doesn’t offer the cheers package on their Mediterranean cruises. I’m booked for the Legend 2020 and after 3 phone calls to Carnival no one seems to know! Thanks

No, we don’t. We’ve never sailed over there and are jealous that you get to go!

My 4 year old only needs milk and water on our cruise. Can i get away with not buying him a drink package?

Absolutely. You do not have to buy a drink package.

how many stories had you know that people actually got throw off the ship for having alcohol with Royal Caribbean

Do you mean trying to sneak alcohol onboard?

How much is drink pkg for carnival Horizon ship for 8 day cruise

It will be the cost of the package times 8 nights. So around $500 given that the package is $61 a night after gratuity.

The Drink Package Calculator doesn’t seem to be working.

Thanks for the comment. See the doohickey zigged when it should have zagged. It should be fixed now.

Is a Royal Caribbean Drink Package Worth It?

Bionic Bar®

When planning a Royal Caribbean cruise, one important consideration is whether or not to purchase a drink package. As an avid cruiser and a lover of both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, I’ve often pondered this question myself. To help you make an informed decision, let’s explore the value of a Royal Caribbean drink package and whether it’s worth the investment.

Firstly, it’s essential to assess your drinking habits and preferences. If you enjoy indulging in a variety of cocktails, beers, wines, and non-alcoholic beverages throughout your cruise, a drink package can offer significant savings. Paying individually for each drink can quickly add up, whereas a drink package provides a fixed cost for unlimited options.

Additionally, a drink package allows you to try new and exciting beverages without worrying about the price. It enhances your onboard experience, allowing you to savor your favorite drinks and discover new favorites without hesitation. Whether you’re lounging by the pool, enjoying a show, or dining at one of the many specialty restaurants , a drink package ensures that you can enjoy your favorite libations anytime, anywhere.

However, it’s crucial to evaluate your individual needs and calculate the costs. Consider the duration of your cruise, the number of sea days versus port days, and the overall value you anticipate getting from the package. If you’re not a frequent drinker or prefer to have only a few beverages during your trip, it might be more cost-effective to pay for drinks individually.

In conclusion, a Royal Caribbean drink package can be worth it if you enjoy a wide variety of beverages and want the convenience of unlimited drinks throughout your cruise. It ensures hassle-free enjoyment and can provide significant savings compared to paying for each drink separately. Nevertheless, it’s important to assess your drinking habits and do the math to determine if a drink package aligns with your budget and preferences. Cheers to finding the perfect option for your Royal Caribbean adventure!

Royal Caribbean food: The ultimate cruise guide to restaurants and dining on board

Melinda Crow

Cruise food and cruise fun go hand-in-hand. Gone are the days when your only food choices were a main dining room and a buffet venue. Royal Caribbean ships are loaded with options — some that are included in your cruise fare and some that cost extra. From the largest ship in the fleet to the smallest, the choices are mind-blowing — especially for new-to-Royal cruisers.

But even if you've sailed with Royal Caribbean in the past, you need a food guide to keep up with what's available on which ship. Sometimes, you want to repeat a dining experience you had on a previous cruise. Other times, you'd prefer to try a new eatery. Knowing which food choices a ship has might impact which ship you pick.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Good examples are the Italian restaurants across the fleet. Do you know the difference between Giovanni's Table and Giovanni's Kitchen? How do the Jamie's Italian restaurants stack up to either of the Giovanni's? And do you know which ship is the only one in the fleet without an Italian restaurant? (Answer: Enchantment of the Seas.) I don't know about you, but I've gotta get my pasta fix when I cruise.

Then there are Royal Caribbean's food secrets. Okay, maybe they aren't actual secrets, but there are things to eat on board that aren't highly publicized. You need to be in the know to seek them out.

Let's start with a list of all the places you can snag a bite, and which ships they are found on. After that, I'll run through some of the most frequently asked questions about Royal Caribbean food.

150 Central Park

150 Central Park serves six-course dinners featuring meat, seafood and vegetarian dishes accompanied by produce that is "locally sourced" and harvested at peak flavor. Though it's styled like a main dining room, serving three meals a day with menus that change daily, the experience is on par with specialty dining, both in service and food quality. It's an ideal alternative to the main dining room for those who are eligible to dine here.

Star and Sky Class suite guests can dine in Coastal Kitchen for breakfast, lunch and dinner; Sea Class suite guests can come for dinner if space is available. Pinnacle-level loyalty members can also eat here at any mealtime, space permitting.

Cupcake Cupboard

royal caribbean cruises drink package cost

A la carte; hours vary

The name of this sweet treat eatery tells you almost everything you need to know. Stop by for extra-fee cupcakes when you're craving sugar. Alternatively, look for decorating classes to join and cupcake kits to purchase, so you have everything you need to return home and bake your own goodies.

Available on: Freedom and Liberty of the Seas

Desserted Milkshake Bar

A la carte; snacks

Here's an idea that's long overdue on a cruise ship – custom milkshakes overflowing with sweet treats like brownies, cookies and popcorn. Adults can upgrade to boozy versions.

Dining Room

Included; breakfast, lunch (sea days) and dinner

The main dining rooms can get a little confusing on a fleet as varied as Royal Caribbean's. Most ships have one large, multideck dining space that serves complimentary meals, but the venue's name varies by ship. Quantum Class ships have four separate dining rooms, each with a different name.

On all ships, one deck or area is reserved for guests with assigned early and late dining times, with the remaining area set aside for those participating in the flexible My Time Dining plan. All guests order from the same menus, which are standard for breakfast daily and change each day for lunch (when it's open) and dinner.

If gourmet hot dogs topped the way you want them is your idea of the perfect lunch or snack, pop in at the Dog House. There are too many choices to try them all on a single cruise.

El Loco Fresh

From breakfast burritos to heaps of nachos and cheesy quesadillas, this Mexican-themed eatery is a quick and filling spot to grab a bite during the day. Pool wear is allowed since this is basically an outdoor restaurant. On four ships, it's located near the pool. The five Oasis Class ships with an El Loco Fresh have it closer to the sports court than the pool, but on all ships, eating here can save you from having to get dressed to go inside for food at the Windjammer.

Available on: Allure (Wipe Out Cafe), Freedom, Icon, Navigator, Oasis, Odyssey, Symphony, Utopia, Wonder of the Seas

Empire Supper Club

royal caribbean cruises drink package cost

When Royal Caribbean says "dinner and a show," the line really means it. This intimate, multicourse dinner features live jazz performances and drink pairings. The experience is one of a kind, but the cover charge for dinner is one of the highest at sea.

English Pub

When I mentioned "secret food," the English pubs were what I had in mind. The pubs on each ship have different names, but the atmosphere is always warm and welcoming. Not every pub serves snacks, but definitely ask if you don't see a food menu. What you find to munch on might turn out to be one of the highlights of your cruise. Smoked cheddar ale soup and deep-fried apple pie with Nutella are top of mind for me.

Fish & Ships

Grab a basket of deep-fried deliciousness (fish, shrimp and chicken) near the pool for a quick lunch or a snack between afternoon activities. Only the lobster tails cost extra.

Giovanni's Italian Kitchen

Fixed price; lunch (select days) and dinner

From a prime cut filet mignon to pizza, Royal Caribbean's second generation of its classic Italian food restaurant serves up an excellent meal. The service is always gracious and the portions generous.

Available on: Freedom, Icon, Odyssey, Utopia, Wonder of the Seas

Giovanni's Table

Royal Caribbean's original Italian restaurants feature a traditional mix of pastas and meat or seafood entrees. The differences between the two Giovanni's are subtle. Lasagna and pizza are available at the Kitchen, but not at the Table. The best eggplant parm I've ever had is only available at Giovanni's Table, as is a gigantic platter of osso buco.

Hooked Seafood

From chowder to mussels to whole Maine lobster, Hooked is where you get your seafood fix on select ships. Personally, I'd go for the lobster mac and cheese, but you do you.

Available on: Icon, Navigator, Symphony, Utopia, Wonder of the Seas

Royal Railway — Utopia Station

We'll know more once Utopia of the Seas launches, but this new restaurant sounds more like a Disney ride, taking you on a culinary journey as if you were inside a luxury railcar — while you're sailing at sea. Windows will display scenes from various destinations, and the menu items will be inspired by those regions of the world.

Available on: Utopia of the Seas

A la carte; lunch and dinner

Across the fleet, Izumi manages to take on several different looks. On Quantum Class ships, it's got a sidewalk sushi bar feel. On other ships, it's a quiet enclave tucked away on the top deck. Wherever you find it, it's the place to be for sushi and Japanese-American fusion eats.

Available on: Adventure, Anthem, Brilliance, Explorer, Grandeur, Jewel, Navigator, Odyssey, Ovation, Quantum, Radiance, Rhapsody, Serenade, Spectrum, Vision, Voyager

Izumi Hibachi & Sushi

A la carte and fixed price; lunch and dinner

On select ships, Izumi also includes a fixed-price teppanyaki option with your choice of beef, chicken, shrimp or a combination of proteins as your entree. Sit around the cooking surface and watch the show from your entertaining chef. Alternatively, you can order sushi along with a selection of hot Japanese dishes a la carte.

Available on: Allure, Freedom, Harmony, Icon, Independence, Mariner, Oasis, Symphony, Utopia, Wonder of the Seas

Izumi in the Park

A la carte; all-day dining

Icon and Utopia of the Seas have more takeaway food options than any other Royal Caribbean ships, including a to-go window passing out sushi at a la carte prices. You'll find the venue in Central Park, next to the main Izumi restaurant.

Available on: Icon and Utopia of the Seas

Jamie's Italian by Jamie Oliver

Royal Caribbean's third Italian option features a Tuscan-inspired, celebrity-chef-curated menu that is a bit more modern than either version of the Giovanni's restaurants found on other ships. You can still find a luscious lasagna, but the menu holds surprises like crispy squid and pan-roasted salmon.

Available on: Anthem, Harmony, Mariner, Navigator, Ovation, Quantum, Spectrum, Symphony of the Seas

Johnny Rockets

royal caribbean cruises drink package cost

Fixed price; all-day dining

Johnny Rockets is the original specialty restaurant on Royal Caribbean ships. Its juicy burgers, fries and shakes have become a beloved part of Royal Caribbean food culture. It's a well-kept secret that the apple pie is hands down the best on board any ship afloat. You'll pay a flat fee per person to dine there, but beverages, such as the venue's famous shakes, cost extra (unless they're included in your drinks package).

On Oasis Class ships, you can enjoy a complimentary breakfast of eggs, omelets, breakfast sandwiches and pancakes at Johnny Rockets.

Available on: Adventure, Allure, Anthem, Explorer, Freedom, Harmony, Independence, Liberty, Mariner, Navigator (Express), Oasis, Symphony, Utopia, Wonder of the Seas

La Patisserie

Looking to put a French twist on your vacation, regardless of your cruise destination? Here's your chance to indulge in French pastries (for purchase) paired with luscious coffees or tea. Think macarons and artisan chocolates that are a step above the complimentary snacks at Cafe Promenade. Order cake or cheesecake by the slice or pick up a whole cake to share with the gang. The best secret here is that you can order your coffee or hot cocoa with a shot of chocolate liqueur.

Available on: Anthem, Ovation, Quantum, Spectrum of the Seas

If you're looking for a poolside snack, you'll find right-sized bites in the form of sliders, pizza, taquitos and sweet treats at Mini Bites.

Available on: Harmony of the Seas

Included; Breakfast and lunch

The Park Cafe is home to the Royal Kummelweck Roast Beef Sandwich, which has garnered serious social media buzz. I hear about people who rush to Park Cafe on embarkation day to start indulging in their Kummelweck binging. Look for other deli treats, paninis and hot pizza in most Park Cafe locations along with fresh fruit, salads and desserts. At breakfast, you'll find grab-and-go options and a bagel bar.

The Park Cafe is found in Central Park on Oasis and Icon Class ships and near the solarium on smaller ships. On those vessels, the venue's location allows you to spend long luxurious hours poolside with plenty of snacks nearby.

Available on: Allure, Brilliance, Enchantment, Grandeur, Harmony, Icon, Oasis, Radiance, Rhapsody, Serenade, Symphony, Vision, Wonder of the Seas

Icon of the Seas' new take on the Royal Promenade coffee-and-snack shop is a winner. Comfy seating with stunning ocean views makes it an ideal spot to hang with friends as you munch your way through a sandwich or tartlet. Specialty coffee and teas are available for a charge. The Pearl Cafe is open around the clock, so you can grab a snack at any hour.

A la carte; breakfast, lunch and dinner

The concept here starts with California beach food like fish tacos or shrimp tostadas, then adds the coolest three words to ever be combined in the English language: "All Day Brunch." When you wake up at noon craving breakfast food, head to the Surfside neighborhood for favorites such as pancake platters and smoked salmon eggs Benedict. As befitting a family-friendly specialty restaurant, kids under 12 dine free.

Playmakers Sports Bar

A la carte; lunch, dinner and late night

It's crazy that the Playmakers menu is still somewhat of an unknown for many Royal Caribbean cruisers. Perhaps those who know work hard not to spread the word. Expect gourmet burgers, wings and, yes, truffle fries. Or pop in after a night of clubbing for a sweet treat like a sundae or the infamous Campfire Cookie topped with melted marshmallows and Nutella.

Available on: Allure and Radiance of the Seas

Solarium Bistro

Included, with a la carte extras; breakfast, lunch and dinner

Tucked away inside the Solarium, the Bistro is a multipurpose food space. Complimentary breakfast and lunch minibuffets are served here, making the venue a quieter option for those meals. No reservations are required.

Dinner, on the other hand, though still complimentary, is by reservation only and is a combination of buffet and table-served dishes, with a menu focused on healthy Mediterranean options. As in the main dining room, a handful of optional charged items are on the menu (upgraded steaks and lobster). Children are allowed to eat in the Bistro, even though the Solarium has a minimum age of 16.

Do not be surprised to discover that the space is not always available during your cruise. Apparently, its location means it has its own kitchen, making it ideal for private functions where food sourcing is important. I've heard of its being used exclusively on some cruises by gluten-free and kosher groups.

Sorrento's Pizza

Whether you're looking to grab a slice or a pie, Sorrento's Pizza is your pizza go-to spot on more than half the fleet. You can order a custom pie or choose from what's on hand. Seating specific to Sorrento's is fairly limited on some ships, but shared dining space is usually somewhere nearby. It's not open 24/7 but doesn't shut down until well after midnight.

Surfside Eatery

Surfside is Royal Caribbean's new family-friendly, stay-all-day onboard destination with multiple pools and attractions. Surfside Eatery provides a place for families to sit down to a meal without leaving the neighborhood. The buffet serves three meals daily with dishes for both kid and grownup palates.

Though both Odyssey and Spectrum have an Izumi Sushi location, Teppanyaki is a separate Japanese steakhouse located on Deck 14 on these two ships. Choose from either a single protein or a combo for the fixed-price meal, similar to Izumi Hibachi. Appetizers are priced a la carte.

Available on: Odyssey and Spectrum of the Seas

The Bamboo Room

The Bamboo Room is another onboard bar with somewhat secretive bar snacks — including Hawaiian barbecue sliders and coconut crab bruschetta. Don't miss this treat if you're sailing on Mariner of the Seas, the only ship in the fleet with this venue.

Available on: Mariner of the Seas

Included; all day dining

The Grove is the exclusive sun deck snack bar for Sky- and Star-tier suite guests on Icon of the Seas. The venue serves upscale Mediterranean mezes (small dishes) in an outdoor setting.

Royal Caribbean food: Frequently asked questions

How does the main dining room work?

At booking, you are offered a choice between traditional times designated as early or late, or flexible dining called My Time Dining , allowing you to show up anytime during restaurant open hours.

Do I need reservations for dinner in a specialty restaurant?

Waiter-served, extra-fee restaurants — whether fixed price or a la carte — typically require reservations. On the rare occasion when a ship is sailing at lower than full occupancy, you might find you can walk up during nonpeak hours and be seated at a specialty restaurant without a reservation. Those opportunities are the exceptions. Better to make a reservation to ensure you get the time slot you prefer.

What do "a la carte" and "fixed price" mean on Royal Caribbean ships?

A la carte pricing refers to restaurants where the food is individually priced. You only pay for the dishes you order. An entire menu might be individually priced, or you might only see a few items with prices on an otherwise complimentary menu.

Fixed price indicates that dining at the restaurant has a single cover charge for the full meal. This may also be stated as "Prix Fixe." You will generally choose an appetizer or salad, an entree, sides and a dessert. Beverages other than tea, coffee and water are an added charge unless specifically stated that they are included.

What beverages are included with my cruise fare?

Drip coffee, tap water, hot and iced tea, milk, and one or more flavored drinks like fruit punch or lemonade dispensed from drink machines. All other beverages may be purchased individually or you can buy a beverage package to pay for unlimited drinks in advance (fine print applies). Read our complete guide to Royal Caribbean drink packages for details.

Is there room service and what does it cost?

Room service is available in all cabins. Continental breakfast, including coffee, pastries, fruit and cold cereal, is free. Hot breakfast, lunch, dinner and all snacks incur a delivery charge of $7.95 plus 18% gratuity. The food itself is mostly complimentary, but selected dishes are priced a la carte.

How do specialty dining packages work?

To reduce the cost of specialty dining, you can buy a three- or five-restaurant package or an unlimited dining package. Some sailings also offer a combo option of Chops plus one other restaurant. These are all available for purchase in the cruise planner before your sailing. The unlimited package allows you to dine at any specialty restaurant each night of your cruise, plus lunches where they are available.

Can children eat in the specialty restaurants on board?

Most Royal Caribbean specialty restaurants cater to children with special menus and reduced prices. There are a few examples where children are allowed, but not catered to. Empire Supper Club is an example of that. The line states that children under 12 are allowed, but the experience is designed "for adult guests."

Does Royal Caribbean charge extra for lobster?

Lobster tails may be ordered any night of the cruise at Chops Grill or for an extra charge in the main dining room. Only one lobster tail is included when complimentary lobster is served in the dining room as part of the menu. Additional lobsters are charged to your bill.

TheStreet

Royal Caribbean shares key deluxe beverage package plans

O nce Royal Caribbean customers book their cruise they face a number of choices. That's because the cruise line uses an a la carte model.

Your cruise fare gets you on the ship and gives you access to most entertainment venues, the ship's pools, the main dining room (MDR), and other select dining options. Buying a cabin on a ship, however, does not come with internet or a beverage package.

Passengers have to decide if they want to spend extra on either of those things. For most passengers, buying an internet package comes down to whether they need to stay in touch with the real world (or how much they like spending time on social media).

Related: American Airlines solves a Delta and United Airlines problem

There are people who simply put their phones away when on a ship while others need internet access for work or to keep in touch with people on shore. Some folks  simply wait for ports to use the internet while others spend the $20-30 per day Royal Caribbean ( RCL ) - Get Free Report charges for access.

The decision on a drink package, especially the Deluxe Beverage Package, can be harder. People who don't get a beverage package are entitled to tap water, basic coffee and tea, and some non-fresh juices in the Windjammer Buffet.

Royal Caribbean sells a Soda Package, which includes soda, but not bottled water, and a Refreshment Package that includes all non-alcoholic beverages. The toughest choice, however, is the Deluxe Beverage Package (DBP) which costs somewhere between $62 and $110 a day (all package buyers also pay an 18% gratuity).

To make the DBP worth it, you have to drink enough to justify the price. That's not all that hard when you consider mixed drinks can cost $15 each, bottles of water cost $3, and fancy coffees are $6-7 each. Still, it's expensive and some passengers have called upon the cruise line to make a key change.

Royal Caribbean won't go all-inclusive

Royal Caribbean's sister brand, Celebrity Cruises, offers some all-inclusive fares which include basic internet and a basic drink package. Celebrity offers two-tiers to its all-inclusive drinks package with the Classic package only offering a limited selection while the "Premium" drink package includes most drinks served on board.

Some passengers have pushed for Royal Caribbean to offer an all-inclusive paclage, Royal Caribbean CEO Michael bayley shot down the idea of that happening during an event on a preview sailing of Icon of the Seas, the cruise line's newest ship, and the largest cruise ship in the world.

"Our strategy has always been the unbundling of pricing to give people as much choice as they possibly can," he said, in news first reported by Matt Hochberg of the Royal Caribbean Blog . ""Our research says that around about 50% of the guests don't want a beverage package."

Bayley shared that keeping its products a la carte, or "unbundled" as he called it, gives passengers more choice so they can make the purchases that are important to them.

"When you unbundle everything, it gives people choice and it pushes the pricing closer to their budget, which is a really important thing for families," he added.

Royal Caribbean knows its customers

Celebrity and Royal Caribbean serve different customers. In many ways, passengers sort of graduate to Celebrity when they get a little older and they aren't sailing with their kids. That's not true in all cases, of couese, as the company's namesake brand, although its built around families, certainly serves all audiences.

Royal Caribbean Group CEO Jason Liberty shared some info on the company's audience during its third-quarter earnings call .

"The positioning of our brands attract guests across broad demographics, psychographics, and at-a-median household income of at least $125,000. Our customers' sentiment is bolstered by strong labor markets, high wages, surplus savings, and elevated wealth levels," he shared.

Liberty also believes that Royal Caribbean will benefit from one key spending trend.

"Even better for us is the fact that overall spend on experiences continue to grow and is currently up 25% compared to 2019, with twice the amount spent on goods," he added.

I've been on 50 cruises. Here are 5 things I never buy on the ships.

  • I've been on 50 cruises, and there are things and experiences I never buy on the ships .
  • Drink packages aren't worth it for me since I don't typically drink enough on the cruise.
  • Instead of buying lanyards, I've started carrying my room key in my phone case.

Insider Today

I've taken 50 cruises on eight different lines over the past 15 years. No matter what ship I'm on, some extras and experiences aren't worth the price.

Here are the things I never buy on a cruise.

I never buy drink packages since I don't drink enough to get my money’s worth.

royal caribbean cruises drink package cost

Most of the major cruise lines , like Carnival and Royal Caribbean, offer drink packages. But they can tack on hundreds of dollars to an already pretty expensive vacation .

Plus, the packages really vary across companies — some cruise lines give you 15 drinks a day while others have unlimited options.

Unfortunately, on every cruise I've been on, everyone (of legal drinking age) in the same stateroom has to make the same decision on drink packages. Even if you're traveling with someone who doesn't drink, they'd have to pay if you want a package.

Instead, I always order drinks à la carte when I want one. It saves me money and makes me really think about the drink I'm ordering.

I get pampered at home instead of booking spa experiences.

royal caribbean cruises drink package cost

One of my favorite parts of cruising is the excuse to get a pedicure beforehand.

Salon services , including pedicures, manicures, and blowouts, are available on a cruise, but I always skip them.

The prices are often much higher than the most expensive services at home. It's also nice to walk onto the ship already looking and feeling great.

Room-service charges are getting out of hand, so I skip getting food delivered.

royal caribbean cruises drink package cost

In my experience, room service used to be included on many cruise lines . Although the option is usually still there, it now typically costs extra.

Instead of paying the fees, I just head to one of the included dining options — like the buffet or main dining room — to get snacks or meals. If I really want to eat in my room because I need some downtime or want to watch a movie, I ask if there are any to-go options.

I also take food to quiet areas on the cruise ship , like adults-only pools, if I want a chill spot that's not my room.

I don't think lanyards are a necessary purchase in this day and age.

royal caribbean cruises drink package cost

It can be tricky to keep track of your room key , which usually doubles as a form of payment and ID to get on and off the ship.

Most cruise lines have an abundance of lanyards for sale as a remedy, but I don't think they're worth it.

Instead, I just put my key card inside my phone case. Since I always have my phone with me, I also always have my room key.

I skip cruise-line excursions and explore ports on my own.

royal caribbean cruises drink package cost

One of the biggest expenses on a cruise, besides the actual booking, is excursions. Cruise lines offer dozens at ports of call around the world, but they're often very expensive for a solo traveler — let alone a family.

Instead, I like to explore the ports on my own or with a third-party excursion company . These excursions are usually cheaper and offer similar experiences.

But always do your research and read reviews before booking with a third-party company. Also, be sure that the excursion ends and gets you back to the ship at least an hour before it's set to depart so you don't get left behind.

When you think of a cruise vacation, what comes to mind? Breakfast buffets, Elvis trivia and the unlikely but not totally implausible threat of pirates? Same. That is, until I actually went on one.

I was raised by two adventure-loving nomads (who have since settled in New Jersey because, life), so the urge to travel is in my blood. I’ve been lucky enough to ski the mountains of New Mexico , hike the Swiss Alps, trail race around Jackson Hole and safari through Kenya, but in my 30 plus years on this planet, I’ve never taken a cruise. And to be honest, I’ve never really wanted to.

So, how did I, a self-proclaimed land lover, end up on the maiden voyage of the largest ship in the world? It’s simple: Cruises are cool again.

According to the Cruise Lines International Association industry report, 2024 is shaping up to be the year we all go cruising. With post-pandemic bookings steadily rising since 2022, 35.7 million passengers are projected to set sail in 2024, a whopping 20 percent more than in 2019. And with this increased interest comes a whole new customer base. As more millennials and Gen X travelers dip their toes in the proverbial waters, gone are the days of the stereotypical cruiser repping a Hawaiian shirt and a boomer birthday. Plus, with both solo and multi-generational family travel firmly on the rise, cruises seem to be at the top of everyone’s bucket list—not to mention their “For You” page.

Between the nine-month world cruise making waves on social media to a number of new ships launching in 2024 , I couldn’t resist kicking off the year with a floating getaway. At the top of my maritime list was Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas , the newest kid on the block that everyone (from The New York Times to TikTok ) couldn’t stop talking about. Whether you’re a first-time cruiser or a seasoned vet, this ship has a little bit of something for everyone. Here’s my honest review.

Boomers Will Be Dirt Flirting This Year, Say Trend Forecasters

Ship Features & Onboard Activities

True to its moniker, the world’s largest ship is a stunning behemoth that, upon arrival, made all the other ships casually parked in the port look like bath toys. Powered by liquefied natural gas—a more energy-efficient and cleaner burning fuel source—the Icon of the Seas is Royal Caribbean’s most sustainable ship to date. At full capacity, it can house 7,600 passengers with 28 different types of accommodations ranging from an infinite ocean-view balcony to a $100,000 three-story family townhouse .

To keep all those people happy, the ship features seven different pools, nine hot tubs and over 40 restaurants with cuisines ranging from coastal seafood to Japanese hibachi. Marketed as the ultimate family vacation , the ship’s stand-out features shine a light on multigenerational fun, from epic waterslides and mini golf to comedy shows and craft cocktails.

As a first-time cruiser, the boat can be overwhelming with 20 decks full of places to explore and activities to book. Luckily, the Royal Caribbean app makes it easy to both prep for your trip prior to leaving and organize your stay while on board. Though I logged way more steps than I ever anticipated (a plus!), the ship’s layout made its size feel less daunting. Divided into eight different neighborhoods each with their own unique function and theme, the overall flow felt seamless and convenient with numerous elevators, easy accessibility and tons of open space. Here are a few of my favorite neighborhoods onboard:

  • Thrill Island: Highlights include Category 6 (the largest waterpark at sea featuring the tallest drop slide and the first family raft slide at sea), Crown’s Edge (a part ropes course, part zip line experience that suspends passengers out over the open ocean), as well as cruise classics like the FlowRider surf simulator, a sport court, a rock-climbing wall and family-friendly mini golf.
  • Chill Island: The place to be to have the ultimate lounge day, featuring swim-up bars, whirlpools and tropical refreshments.
  • The Hideaway: An adult only (18+) area featuring the first suspended infinity pool at sea with ocean views and a dedicated DJ and bar.

  • Surfside: As the first neighborhood designed specifically for kids, Surfside has everything young families would need to stay and play all day, including a splash pad, a baby pool, an arcade and an underwater-themed carousel, plus five different dining options the whole family can enjoy.
  • Central Park: This open-air hub features tons of live greenery for a full-theme immersion. Similar to its stateside namesake, there are seven unique bars and restaurants that call this neighborhood home, including a blues club and a walk-up Champagne bar.

  • AquaDome: With panoramic views of the open ocean, the AquaDome is home to the most epic aqua show this writer has ever seen. Hosted at the AquaTheater, the highly anticipated experience features high divers, synchronized swimmers and the first-ever aerial pas de deux (duet dance). It’s weird and wonderful in the most extraordinary way. A must-see for anyone lucky enough to snag a seat.
  • Royal Promenade: A mainstay in many Royal Caribbean vessels, the Royal Promenade is located at the heart of the ship. In addition to 15 bars, restaurants and lounges, this neighborhood includes a dueling piano bar, music hall and comedy club. At the center of it all is The Pearl, a multi-sensory immersive structure that features kinetic tiles and specialized lighting to mimic the movement of water.

Stateroom Accommodations

Upon arrival, we made our way to an ocean-view balcony stateroom on the 12 th deck, our home away from home for the next few days. At 204 square feet, the room was perfectly suitable for two people. Cozy, inviting and surprisingly quiet, with smart storage options, well-placed charging ports and a good amount of room to move about freely without feeling like you were on top of each other. The on-suite bathroom was on the smaller side, but the spacious shower made up for the crowded toilet and sink area. My favorite part of the room was the outdoor balcony, which felt private and secluded while bringing in tons of natural light.

Food & Drink

Though the number of dining options onboard is impressive, the quality at certain locations was a little lackluster. My favorites included Izumi for sushi and hibachi, Sorrento’s for all-you-can-eat thin-crust pizza and Pearl Café for 24-hour snacks, both sweet and savory. I was also pleasantly surprised by the breakfast and lunch buffet options at both Windjammer and Surfside Eatery (which has a menu catered to a much younger age bracket but hey, sometimes you just need a chicken nugget).

The main dining room, however, was a miss for me. A standard in all Royal Caribbean ships, the table service offerings were perfectly fine (I did like my salmon), but largely boring and mass-produced. After ending the meal with a curdled crème brûlée that resembled scrambled eggs, it was a one-and-done experience.

In addition to the standard buffet options, Icon of the Seas also features laidback brunch spots, kid-approved bites and extravagant dining experiences like the Empire Supper Club complete with a live jazz band, an eight-course meal and cocktail pairings.

Unlike some of the food offerings, the specialty cocktails on board were a memorable highlight. Each bar has its own curated list of libations that are intriguing and innovative—not to mention delicious. The 1400 Lobby Bar, a mainstay in the Royal Promenade, features unique twists on classic cocktails like a pineapple pisco sour and a rose and grapefruit Aperol spritz. And if you’re still on the espresso martini train (no shame) both Point and Feather and Rye & Bean offer top-notch blends. So whether you like Bombay or Bulleit, there’s truly something for everyone–including a handful of zero-proof options.

Destinations & Pricing

More interested in the destination than the journey? The Icon of the Seas currently offers six different routes sailing to both the Western and Eastern Caribbean with highlights including the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Puerto Rico, St. Thomas and St. Maarten. All round-trip voyages depart from Miami, Florida , and most include a stop at Perfect Day at CocoCay in The Bahamas—a private island resort owned by Royal Caribbean.

Though the cruise I went on was a shortened version of their standard week-long package, we did spend a few sunny hours on Perfect Day at CocoCay, which features white sand beaches, tons of pools, overwater cabanas and a massive waterpark with heart-pounding thrills (including the tallest waterslide in North America). My favorite part of the island had to be Hideaway Beach, the brand-new adults-only oasis with swim-up bars, in-water hammocks and stunning views of the ocean.

As the newest vessel in Royal Caribbean’s fleet, a vacation on the Icon of the Seas does not come cheap. Prices vary depending on your preferred travel route, but for a standard seven-day cruise, dynamic pricing starts at $3,600 per week for two people in an interior stateroom when booked directly through Royal Caribbean. Luckily, this price also includes meals and beverages at select restaurants, most entertainment options and a number of daily activities, but if you’re traveling with multiple people or are looking for a bigger room with a better view, prepare to shell out even more.

Final Thoughts

What we like.

  • the ship is the star of the show—it’s both the main attraction and the destination
  • great for large groups and young families
  • tons of dining and entertainment options
  • excellent craft cocktails

What We Don't Like

  • lackluster food
  • limited destinations and departure port

To all the hardcore cruisers out there, I see you. Though I still prefer exploring the world on my own two feet (there’s so much to see beyond the port), I can honestly say that I understand the appeal. Aside from only having to unpack once, the benefits of vacationing on a cruise are undeniable. Feel like hitting a comedy show tonight? Done. Prefer to spend the day lounging by the pool? Easy. Offspring too old for the kid club but too young to wander around a city on their own? Stick ‘em on a boat!

If you’re traveling as a family or in a large group, cruises just make sense, and that’s especially true on the Icon of the Seas. Like a fully planned vacation with minimal effort and the added bonus of a zero-commitment itinerary, this ship offers something for every generation to enjoy (yes, even Elvis trivia).
