Natural Bridge Caverns is probably the most popular natural attraction in Texas. The breathtaking caves are only 30 minutes away from downtown San Antonio and are Texas’s most extensive cave system. It is the largest show cavern in Texas, formed over thousands of years. 

The underground cavern tours are the main highlight here as people get a chance to look at the caverns through these tours closely. It is a state historical landmark known for its astounding beauty and should be visited whenever you are in the state.  

History of Natural Bridge Caverns

In the March of 1960, four students of St Mary’s University – Orion Knox Jr, Preston Knodell, Joe Cantu, and Al Brandt – got the desired permission to explore an area now famous Natural Bridge Caverns. The four students discovered the caverns on 27th March, and on their 4th trip to the caverns, they explored a shade over a mile of passages. Further explorations revealed an additional 2 miles of passages which are now known as the North Cavern. The excavation of the entrance trail revealed the discovery of a human tooth and arrowhead that dates to 5000 BC. It is believed that early people used the uppermost parts of the cavern. 

After the discovery, one of the students, Orion Knox Jr, assisted the landowner in making plans to develop the caverns as she wanted the world to see the caverns under the property. Orion approached both National Park Service and Texas Park System, but neither could help them as they did not have the required funds to meet the demands of such an endeavor. 

The landowner herself decided to fund the development, and she was being assisted by Orion, who dropped out of school for the cause. The developmental work began in 1963, and work on the lights and trails continued till July 03, 1964. The cavern has been opened to visitors ever since and is operated by family members. In 1971, the Natural Bridge Caverns got registered as a US National Natural Landmark. 

Geological Cave Formations

During the Caverns tour , the guide will take you to 180 ft below the surface and through different sections of the caverns, where you will get a chance to view the unusual rock formations such as stalactites, soda straws, flowstones, chandeliers, and stalagmites. The unique part is that these formations are constantly evolving and changing, and even photos taken weeks apart could be different.

The porous nature of the limestone allows the rainwater to travel downwards through the various layers of rock. Here it dissolves calcite, a weak mineral that helps form the speleothems at the Natural Bridge Caverns. After it exits the limestone, the water enters the caverns where it flows and drips consistently, causing the geological formations to retain waxy luster. 

There was never an active bat colony, and only one or two bats would wander into the caverns occasionally. However, recent evidence shows that bats reside in Natural Bridge Caverns, and there are roosting areas and a collection of bat guano. 

Are Natural Bridge Caverns Haunted?

Natural Bridge Caverns are not haunted by any means, and it is the most popular underground tourist attraction in Texas. 

How Big are Natural Bridge Caverns?

The length of the cavern is 3/4th mile and descends 180 ft below the surface. 

Natural Bridge Caverns Tours

The first-timers should always opt for the  Discovery Tour.  The visitors would be asked to follow a guide 180 ft below the surface through rooms filled with flowstones, soda straws, and other interesting geological formations. There are many things to see here, so do take photos of what you like to create beautiful memories. 

Are you looking for a detailed tour of the caverns? You should go for the  Hidden Passages Tour.  It is a 70-minute excursion that would take you to the colossal chambers furnished with cave ribbons and unusually long soda straw stalactites. The guide would turn off all the lights to allow the visitors to experience the caverns in their natural state. 

The  Adventure Tour  is more comprehensive which spreads over three hours. In this tour, you get a chance to walk through the undeveloped portions of the cavern system. You need to follow the light on your headlamp as you hike, climb, slide, and repel through the narrow sections of the cave. The tour will let you feel like the explorers who had discovered the caverns in the early 1960s. Whatever tour you choose, you will pass under the beautiful limestone bridge (60 ft) from where the Natural Bridge Caverns got its name.

Is Natural Bridge Caverns Cold?

The cavern tours are always available irrespective of the weather. However, some of the surface attractions can be dependent on the weather. The cavern experiences a temperature of 70 degrees F throughout the year with a relative humidity of 99%. The real – feel inside the caverns would be 80 degrees F. The majority of the visitors would be comfortable in shorts and a T-shirt while inside the cavern. 

What to Wear?

Light outdoor clothing with comfortable walking shoes is highly recommended for your trip to the caverns. However, the Twisted Trails activities would require closed-heel shoes.

The caverns are open from 9 am to 4 pm but is closed on Easter, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day.

What to Do at Natural Bridge Caverns (Beside Tours)

Natural Bridge Caverns is a fun place in San Antonio that is perfect for all ages. There is much to see underground, but there are even better things to see and do on the surface. The adults will enjoy it, and the kids will love it. 

Twisted Trails

It is the largest outdoor sky trail and sky rails course where you get to test your strength and balance in more than 50 obstacles. It has four levels of rope ladders, weave walks, double beams, and lily pads. The 60 ft tall course has one straight and seven curved ziplines covering 685 feet.

You will feel that you are on a heart-pounding roller coaster ride when you ride them. The younger kids would love the  Twisted Trails Tykes  course because it has many confidence-building challenges. 

Natural Bridge Mining Company

If you have kids in your group, come to Natural Bridge Mining Company to uncover fossils and gems like emeralds and amethyst. Just take a bag of mining rough in the tray and dip it into the water from a wooden water tower. When you bring the tray out, you will be delighted by what you unravel. 

Amaze n’ Ranch Roundup

It is a 5000 sq ft outdoor maze that has three towers and a bridge to help you through the maze. 

Big Daddy’s Sweets

When you feel a bit hungry, you can come here to treat yourself to cold beer, wine, hand-dipped ice cream, and a range of tasty treats. 

Cavern Café

Cavern Café is another place where you can fill up your tummy with mouthwatering pizzas, chicken strips, and hot dogs. 

A visit to Natural Bridge Caverns would be incomplete without shopping for souvenirs. It has the best collection of rocks and minerals in Texas, along with a healthy collection of fossils, shirts, and collective minerals. 

Best Time to Visit

They can be visited any time, although many visitors prefer to come here in summer. 

How to Get to Natural Bridge Caverns

The caverns are around 25 miles northeast of downtown San Antonio. The area is not serviced by public transport, so you need a car or a cab to reach the destination. When you are on I-35, head North and exit # 175, take a left turn on Natural Bridge Caverns Road, and the location would be at a distance of eight miles on your left. 

Hotels Nearby

Most of the best hotels in San Antonio are around 7 miles away. La Quinta Inn & Suites and Candlewood Suites are some of the best options. Many campgrounds are nearby, such as Stone Creek RV Park and Landa RV & Campground.

The caverns are in the natural limestone of the region with underground rivers, caves, undercut cliffs, and beautiful crystal formations. You can tour the cavern on your own or take a boat ride. The Discovery of the Natural Bridge Caverns in San Antonio

On March 27, 1960, four students by the names of Orion Knox Jr., Preston Knodell Jr., Al Brandt, and Joe Cantu from St. Mary’s University in nearby San Antonio discovered the San Antonio Caverns while exploring them for the fourth time. They had previously been explored only about a mile into their total length.

Further explorations revealed a passageway extending for two miles, which came to be known as the “North Cavern.” After discovery, Orion Knox Jr. assisted the landowners in obtaining information and making decisions about their property’s development.

About The San Antonio Caverns

The San Antonio Caverns, popularly known as the Natural Bridge Caverns , is the largest known commercial caverns in Texas. They are located about 30 minutes north of San Antonio, Texas, in the Hill Country, next to the Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch.

The name is derived from a 60-foot natural limestone slab bridge that spans an amphitheater setting at the entrance of these underground passages. One can only imagine how spectacular this dramatic sight must have been before its collapse!

With their unique speleothems and other formations, these caverns offer a range of beautiful sights.

The temperature inside the cave is a constant 21 degrees Celsius (70°F), and the humidity level never drops below 99 percent .

The deepest part of the public tour is 180 feet down. However, there are areas that go 230 feet beneath ground level.

The caverns are still slowly developing because rainwater travels downward through the limestone layers, dissolving out calcite, a weak mineral that makes up all of Natural Bridge Caverns’ speleothems.

After exiting the limestone, water flows through and drips from cave ceilings in constant streams. This creates a shiny effect that visitors can easily see in some caves.

Brian Vauter, Cave Geologist at the Natural Bridge Caverns, shared that this cavern is called a living cave because “the cave formations are still being formed by water dissolving rock.”

Cavern Tours

Texas’ premier natural attraction is a vast underground landscape of immense, otherworldly beauty. Formed by single drops falling from above and the slow passage of time, these formations are unlike anything you’ve ever seen.

The first tour to open to the public in 1964 was Discovery Tour, which descends 180 feet below ground level but requires minimal exertion. The Castle of the White Giants contains the largest formations in caverns, including the white giants.

If you want a more “off the beaten track” experience, book an Adventure Tour. Each of these tours has a minimum number of two participants and is priced at $149.99 per person. Take a look at the tours packages:

Discovery Tour

The Discovery Tour is the more easygoing tour. Travel through half a mile of Texas’ largest, most spectacular show cavern. Listen to a knowledgeable tour guide as you explore the underground world 180 feet below ground level. For casual cavers, this is educational and interesting, while not putting much strain on the body.

You will see awe-inspiring, centuries-old formations such as impressive stalagmites and soda straws. Take pictures because this is one walk-through time that you won’t want to forget!

Ensure you wear comfortable walking shoes which provide good traction on wet surfaces and on steep slopes.

Hidden Passages Tour

The Hidden Passages Tour is definitely for more experienced or adventurous cavers. Here, you will walk through substantial underground chambers decorated with the rarest and most delicate formations.

The Hidden Passages are decorated with unusually long ‘soda straw’ stalactites, waves of ‘cave ribbon,’ and more.

You must see Natural Bridge Cavern’s hidden areas to appreciate the splendor they contain. Tours leave every 30 minutes to 1 hour and take approximately 60 minutes.

This tour is recommended for the more adventurous types, as you may need to be more physically fit. Prepare to get dirty and wet. One user also mentioned that the tour guide let the group bask in the absolute darkness during this tour by switching off her flashlight. We hope you’re not afraid of the dark!

Twisted Trails

Natural Bridge Caverns’ twisted ropes course is great fun for the whole family. It provides a thrilling 60-foot climb to get everyone in on the action.

For younger visitors, the Tykes version of Twisted Trails offers a smaller, easier-to-navigate course that allows kids to try their hand at similar challenges without feeling overwhelmed.

And, you can show off your strength and climbing skills on the new multiple-climber-friendly walls. Climbers use their upper-body strength and fancy footwork to maneuver vertical structures like the Jungle Gym, Astroball, or Twister as they make their way up these challenges to see who will reach the top first.

You should dress comfortably and according to the weather. Open-heeled shoes, flip-flops, or sandals are not permitted. If your hair is shoulder long or longer, it is advisable that you tie it back.

Natural Bridge Caverns: A Geologic Wonder in San Antonio

A short drive north of San Antonio, Texas, the Natural Bridge Caverns are an awe-inspiring geologic wonder, perfect for adventure-seekers of all ages.

Discovered on March 27, 1960, by four college students from nearby St. Mary's University, these caverns are named for the massive, 60-foot limestone bridge spanning their entrance. The bridge was created when a sinkhole formed around it.

The caverns date back to the early Cretaceous Period, 66 to 145 million years ago. Artifacts dating to 5,000 B.C. and human remains as old as 8,000 years have been found here.

After learning about the presence of the cave, Clara Wuest, the landowner, worked with one of the students and others to develop and open the cave to the public on July 3, 1964.

Natural Bridge Caverns has remained in the family ever since, and in 1971, it was named a U.S. National Natural Landmark. Today, it's the largest commercially-operated cave in Texas.

Visitors can embark on guided tours to explore vast underground chambers with stunning formations like stalactites, stalagmites, and flowstones. And that's precisely what I did on my way home from celebrating the Holidays on Houston Street in San Antonio.

Natural Bridge Caverns Discovery Tour

Before I take you below ground to see some of the cave system's most spectacular formations, let's review the cavern tour options .

Discovery Tour: This guided tour takes you into the first cave discovered in 1960. The tour lasts about 60 minutes, reaches a maximum depth of 180 feet, and covers a distance of 0.75 miles.

Hidden Wonders Tour: Launched in spring 2023, this tour introduces visitors to a new cave. The tour is about 75 minutes long, reaches a maximum depth of 160 feet, and requires 0.5 miles of walking.

Combo Tours: The combo tour ticket allows you to do both the Discovery and Hidden Wonders tours on the same day, with a break in between.

Same-day adult entry fees are $31 for the Discovery Tour and $32.75 for the Hidden Wonders Tour; the Cavern Combo Tour is $53.50. And you can save a few dollars by buying tickets online in advance.

Adventure Tours: If you want to go off-the-beaten-track, are comfortable in tight spaces, and don't mind getting dirty, Natural Bridge Caverns offers two more adventurous cave tours. Ticket prices are higher, but so too are the risks.

The 2 to 3-hour St. Mary's Adventure Tour for $129.99 takes you into a “wild” portion of the Discovery Tour cave, where you'll sometimes use ropes.

The 3.5 to 4-hour Discovery Adventure Tour for $169.99 recreates portions of the initial cave explorers' expedition. You can do both tours for $249.99 for a full day of adventure. A box lunch is included.

The caves' temperature is consistent at 70 F (21 C) with 99% relative humidity. Wear comfortable shoes with some grip, like trail running sneakers or hiking shoes. Avoid flip-flops, sandals, or anything that may cause you to slip on wet surfaces.

To make the most of my visit with Kel, we chose the Combo Tour ; we did the Discovery Tour first, followed by Hidden Wonders.

A few minutes before our 2 p.m. start time, we met our tour guide, Ryleigh, who reviewed the cavern rules.

They include the importance of staying on the walking trail and not touching any rock formations, many of which have been forming for thousands of years. There are no restrooms once you descend into the caves; no food, drinks (other than bottled water), or smoking is allowed.

We descended a paved path beneath the limestone bridge and into the Discovery Cave. The first noteworthy sign we saw was labeled The Bear Pit, where 8,000-year-old black bear remains were found at a depth of 45 feet.

Fifteen minutes into the cavern tour, we were walking past a narrow and low-to-the-ground passageway that marked the entrance to the cave. Crouching down and peering into it, I couldn't imagine squirming through the rocky crevice with only the light of a headlamp to guide me.

Pluto's Anteroom

The first large chamber we entered is named Pluto's Anteroom (dept: 108 feet). Here, we paused so Ryleigh could share more facts about what we were seeing. There were some stone benches for those who preferred to sit.

The most fascinating feature she shared was the black markings on the ceiling, which resulted from a bat colony that once lived in the cave. The discoloration results from the bats' bodies rubbing against the ceiling for who knows how many years.

From Pluto's Anteroom, we continued to descend into the cave. An impressive grouping of stalactites and stalagmites named Sherwood Forest is seen at a depth of 180 feet.

The delicateness of many of these formations, combined with the knowledge that they've been forming over thousands, perhaps tens of thousands of years, is truly astounding.

We left Sherwood Forest to walk above Purgatory Creek. At 211 feet, it's the deepest point in the cave. It was also one of my favorite rooms on the Discovery Tour.

Once I reached the opposite end from which we entered, I turned back to look again in appreciation at the otherworldliness of the environment.

It also occurred to me that building these pathways in the caves and installing the lighting must have been a slow and methodical process. I'm sure every effort was made to avoid damaging the delicate formations and disturbing the ancient mud.

Castle of the White Giants

The next big chamber we entered, named Castle of the White Giants (dept: 150 feet), featured shallow running water that formed pretty little pools on the cave floor.

Watchtower, the tallest column in Natural Bridge Caverns at 50 feet, rose from a larger pool of crystal-clear water.

I tried to choose photos I felt would show up best, whether you're reading this on a phone, tablet, or laptop. However, none hold a candle to what it's like to walk through the cave chambers firsthand.

Kel, who'd driven by Natural Bridge Caverns countless times throughout her life in Texas, was equally impressed. She'd been the one to suggest we check them out.

Emerald Lake glistened as we walked past it. Unlike the many beautiful bodies of water I've encountered from Thailand to the Bahamas , there would be no swimming here.

Fun fact: the largest underground lake in North America is called The Lost Sea at Craighead Caverns in Tennessee. It's 800 feet long and 220 feet wide; it's so large visitors board glass-bottom boats on their cave tour.

Hall of the Mountain King

At a depth of 135 feet, the Hall of the Mountain King is the largest chamber in the cave and our way out. The chamber was illuminated after we had had a minute to take in the scenery from below with the lights out up top.

A long and winding path leads visitors up and out of the deepest areas of the Discovery Cave. Given the 99% relative humidity, walking this section will make you sweat.

This steeper section of the trail has handrails and a special surface to provide good traction.

Throughout the Discovery Cave tour, you're getting up close (within arm's reach) to the rock formations. This felt especially true on the walk up the cavern's biggest chamber.

At the top, there's a water fountain where you can take a sip of the cave water. It's at this point that the tour concludes. Guests can exit the remainder of their way at their own pace. After tipping Ryleigh for a job well done, we emerged into the late afternoon sunlight after an hour below ground.

We had about a 45-minute break between the end of the 2 p.m. Discovery Tour and the start of the 4 p.m. Hidden Wonders Tour, the newest to be offered at Natural Bridge Caverns.

We used the free time to grab snacks at the concession stand opposite the admission counter, check out the gift shop, and use the restrooms.

At 4 p.m., we met a new guide for our second foray into the underground world beneath San Antonio.

There were about double the number of visitors for this tour, including many little kids and at least one baby. No strollers are allowed, so any kids need to be able to walk on their own or be carried.

The experience began with reviewing the safety tips and introducing how the cave was discovered.

In short, several small exploratory holes were drilled in the same area as the Discovery Tour, and the fourth one suggested a new and massive underground chamber.

Well Shaft #4 was widened to a diameter of four feet, and a spelunker attached to a winch was slowly lowered through it. The rest is history. Our guide pointed out the shaft in the cave's ceiling once we were underground.

The multi-million-dollar development of this particular cavern began in 2017, and it started seeing visitors in May 2023.

Unlike the Discovery Tour, which was accessible from a natural opening in the ground, the Hidden Wonders cave had been entirely sealed off throughout human history.

Whereas the Discovery Cave begins with tight passages and small rooms, with Hidden Wonders, you'll be immediately presented with an enormous underground chamber.

A staircase with handrails allows guests to descend safely, taking in the captivating rock formations. Guests on the Hidden Wonders Tour reach a maximum depth of 160 feet.

The Ballroom

Near the cave's end is a 5,700-square-food dome chamber dubbed The Ballroom. This unique space now serves as an event space.

Box Canyon is another immense space at the far end of The Ballroom. Visitors are treated to a state-of-the-art music and light show before they exit the cavern.

Belt Assisted Transport

Speaking of exits, the folks at Natural Bridge Caverns spared no expense when they developed the world's first Belt Assisted Transport (B.A.T.) out of a cave.

The 700-foot-long conveyor belt rises at a sufficient speed and incline to get you safely out after a few minutes.

That said, guests more comfortable walking out of the tunnel are invited to do so. Handrails and bench seating are available at several points along the path.

The highlight of the Hidden Wonders tour was the initial experience of walking down the stairs in the first chamber.

Overall, I'm glad we gave Natural Bridge Caverns an entire afternoon so we could do both the Discovery and Hidden Wonders tours.

If you're short on time or only want to choose one, I'd recommend the Discovery Tour, as I felt like there were more unique formations to see in that cave.

The activities at Natural Bridge Caverns may have begun with a cave tour, but they've since expanded to include many above-ground experiences.

Chief among these is the 60-foot high Zip Rails and Ropes Course , one of the most extensive setups I've seen in person. The rope course I recently navigated while ziplining in Tampa Bay is dwarfed by comparison.

A 5,000-square-foot maze and the chance to mine for gems and fossils are a few of the attractions aimed at kids.

Since we visited in December, we also saw the Christmas decorations displayed at Natural Bridge Caverns for the holidays. These included a 30-foot tree, a 1/3-mile trail of lights, campfires and s'mores, live music, and ice skating for kids.

Regardless of what time of year you visit Natural Bridge Caverns, you'll find sweets like fudge and Blue Bell ice cream, barbecue, and beer at Big Daddy's. If we hadn't been full from our brunch at Market Square in downtown San Antonio, I would've tried the brisket.

As our day at Natural Bridge Caverns drew to a close, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and appreciation. These caverns are not only a testament to the natural beauty in the state of Texas but also rank among its best attractions.

Exploring these underground marvels, formed millions of years ago, far beneath the Earth's surface, is humbling and exhilarating. It's a journey that connects us to the past in a profound way, reminding us of the incredible forces that shape our planet.

Natural Bridge Caverns’ new tour includes area previously off-limits to guests

Brad Wuest doesn’t remember his first trip into the caves and passages of Natural Bridge Caverns.

“My mother carried me in a baby backpack,” he said. “I’m sure there’s a photo somewhere.”

Since then, Wuest, the third-generation owner, president and CEO of one of Texas’ largest cave systems has made countless excursions into the massive system.

Located in Comal County just outside of New Braunfels, Natural Bridge Caverns has become an international tourist destination for cavers and casual day visitors alike. The cave system was created over millions of years, as rainwater seeped underground, slowing dissolving the limestone until an underground river formed, further enlarging the caves.

It is still being actively explored and mapped out to this day. In just the past four years, Wuest, along with his brother Travis Wuest and their team of specialized cavers, have expanded the known parts of the cave by more than a mile, to a total of 3.65 explored miles.

Thanks to a new expedition tour launching later this month, guests will soon have the opportunity to see parts of the cave system that haven’t yet been open to the public, while also getting a chance to test their agility by climbing up short slippery slopes, sliding down muddy shelves and traversing a narrow ledge around a 30-foot deep pit.

The new tour, which will be known as St. Mary’s Adventure Tour in honor of the four St. Mary’s University students who first explored the caves in 1960 after getting permission from Wuest’s grandparents, is a roughly two-hour introduction to caving.

Natural Bridge Caverns will offer two of these tours per day, allowing interested morning visitors to catch the afternoon trip if they’re interested, Wuest said. The caverns’ current four-hour adventure tour is a little more intense, and requires advance booking at least a day ahead. Up to six guests are allowed on each expedition, accompanied by two guides.

Earlier this week, Wuest and two guides gave the San Antonio Report an exclusive first look at the new tour.

Three rules of three

Wuest met the group at the cave’s entrance, under a striking limestone arch that appears to float above the open entry way. He wore custom-made caving pants that have faded from red to muddied pink, a waist harness adorned with ropes and carabiners, a helmet with LED headlamp and ankle-high, waterproof hiking boots.

Just beyond the entrance, tour guide Ethan Fagan explained the three rules of three when caving: make sure you have at least a group of three people, that there are at least three light sources and always make three points of contact while climbing.

Fagan, a recent UTSA graduate why earned his bachelor’s degree in geology, started the tour from a paved passageway that snakes downwards into an open area known as “St. Mary’s Hall,” also named in honor of those first spelunkers.

Fagan instructed the group to turn on their headlamps, and then follow him over a short brick step into wild cave. This portion of the caverns differs considerably from the paved, well-lit one-hour discovery tours that everyday visitors take at regular intervals.

As the group came upon the first of many climbs, Fagan scaled the muddy hill in seconds. The group’s trailing guide, Spencer Weaver, took turns clipping each caver onto a rope with a specialized ascension carabiner to prevent falls before handing each person a separate knotted rope to pull on. The climb wasn’t as easy as Fagan made it look.

“You’re officially a caver now,” Fagan said to one neophyte caver who made it to the top, panting.

Fagan led the group through shin-high water, into narrow passages and under delicate stalactites — the calcium salt spires that form from the roof of caves. Early in the tour, Wuest asked the group to avoid touching the walls, and to only hold stalagmites — the ones that grow up from the cave floor — at the base, and only if necessary to regain balance.

About halfway through the journey, the group had to traverse a narrow ledge above a 30-foot-deep pit via a “traverse line” — a short network of anchored ropes parallel to the ground on the narrow ridge surrounding the pit. To make it around, cavers have to clip and unclip a pair of carabiners to stay safely strapped to the wall as they stepped carefully along the ridge.

Looking as if he’d done it a thousand times, Fagan leaned perilously far out over the pit when illustrating how to do it.

The odyssey included several special cave formations, including black calcite, a natural dark crystal formation; box work, honeycomb-like structures that can form in some sedimentary rock; and soda straws, hollow cylindrical tubes hanging delicately along parts of the cavern ceiling.

At one point, everyone turned off their headlamps to experience total darkness. It was awesome — but also a bit terrifying.

The journey to the tail of the soon-to-be-opened passage and back to the entrance took roughly two hours. Afterwards, the group power washed the mud off their shoes before hitting the adventure tour station, where showers, water and snacks are available.

More to explore

“Do you see that hole right there?” Wuest said, pointing to the top of one of the dome caves during the excursion. “That’s a lead” — an entry point to an unexplored part of the cavern system.

These days, new leads in the caverns are found on a regular basis, Wuest said, thanks to improvements in technology, caving gear and surveying equipment.

For example, cavers of old wore carbide lamps attached to their helmets that only illuminated a few feet in any direction. Today, intense LED lights light up far larger areas, allowing for the discovery of new leads quickly, Wuest said, while drones with cameras make it possible to explore leads unreachable by humans.

Just weeks ago, Wuest and his team discovered a lead that directed them to a previously unexplored cave that contains an underground river Wuest said is connected to the Glen Rose Aquifer, which lies beneath the caverns — a huge discovery, he said.

He and the team are hopeful they will find unique cave-dwelling species in the river. Environmental scientists have been meticulously studying different sections of the cave over the past year to identify them, he said.

One of the most important takeaways Wuest said he hopes guests get out of their tours is the importance of environmental stewardship.

According to census data, Comal County is the second fastest-growing county in the nation, and has been for the last several years. As housing and developments expand across the Hill Country and along the I-35 corridor, it’s more important than ever to protect unique natural resources like Natural Bridge Caverns, Wuest said.

Wuest said he hopes seeing the caverns can help people make the connection.

I was traveling through Texas, from Austin to San Antonio, and I had planned a visit to the Natural Bridge Caverns just a day before I arrived. My ticket admission was $30 USD for the Discovery Tour and the duration of the tour was 70 minutes. The tour group was around a dozen people, and a tour guide. The tour was informative, I enjoyed the tour and glad that I did this.

Absolutely worth visiting these amazing caverns! The Discovery tour was amazing. Everything is well arranged.

Fascinating cave systems. Our guide Donna was excellent-very informative tour. Well worth the money for both cave tours.

I highly recommend going on both tours - it’s steep but very cool. The negative part of this tree is tat you either drive or get an Uber or Lyft or drive yourself

Our guide was Donna and she was very informative. The cavern temp was 70 degrees with 99% humidity. It can be a very strenuous hike through the cavern, but well worth it. You will be soaked from the humidity when you emerge. Glad my wife (70) and I (71) did it!

Didn’t know what to expect about any underground cavern tour but my wife and myself were happily amazed by not only the natural wonder of the caves but also how well they were presented. Our tour guide, Sarah, was bubbly and energetic as well as well informed and patient. So despite being underground 190ft we felt safe and secure w/her at the helm. The whole operation was well thought out and run. The gift shop was well appointed and the grounds and employees were very nice & well kept…even @ 100+ temps. Thank you all.

8 Popular Guided Cave Tours In Texas

Venture underground on one of these popular guided cave tours in Texas.

Texas has about 3,000 caves, but as you can imagine, not all are open to the public for guided tours or for anyone going in alone. This article covers guided cave tours in Texas available for touring. Most caverns of Texas are around 68-70 degrees year-round, so sweaters are not necessary, but ensure you wear the correct shoes (closed-toes are the best) and no high heels.

TIP: Buy your tickets online to save time waiting in line.

Fun Facts About Caves:

• From May through September, near downtown San Antonio, the witness of the cyclone of bats emerging from the Bracken Cave can be seen. Visitors plan their vacations to the beautiful Texas hill country during this time to see the flights of bats.
• Airman’s Cave in Austin is gated and closed to the public. Backdoor Cave in Austin is not gated and is a 25-mile walk to the cave entrance. Enter at your own risk.
• Tennessee has the most caves in the US, with the majority located in the eastern part of the state.
• Kentucky holds the title of having the largest cave in the world, called Mammoth Cave. It comprises cave systems with several entrances and tours ranging from easy to complex.

Who Offers Guided Cave Tours in Texas?

There are quite a few caves in Texas that offer guided tours. I don’t know too many public caves that don’t, but I bet there are a few, like the Enchanted Rock cave inside the Enchanted Rock State Park. There is a fee to enter the park, and you can walk inside the granite formation cave on your own.

1. Inner Space Caverns

Georgetown, in the Texas Hill Country, right up the road from Austin, is home to Inner Space Caverns . My grandson and I visited this cave a couple of years ago, and what I remember most was these two siblings with their grandparents asking the tour guide question after question. It was a little annoying, but the tour guide kept his cool and answered all their silly questions. So we had a few laughs about that.

The second thing I remember and appreciated was that the cave was not humid like some I’ve been in, so it was much easier to breathe.

2. The Cave Without A Name

I visited this cave on a recent sponsored trip to Boerne, TX . Visit Boerne boasts about   The Cave Without A Name , and I am so glad they selected it for me. My tour guide was spot on, and her attitude and love for the cave made me love it more. She enjoyed telling the other family and me about the cave’s history. What’s cool is that marriage ceremonies, as do cave concerts, happen in the cave. How cool would it be to get married in a cave?

After your cave tour, there are hiking trails, outdoor games, and a sluicing machine to do right outside. I had no idea mining for fossils is also called sluicing. But, if you like mining for gold, as they say, plan to visit this cave and go sluicing as I did. My sluicing bag was full of crystals and beautiful rock formations that started my rock collection at home.

3. Cascade Caverns

Cascade Caverns is another cave just outside of Boerne that offers cave tours. This cave is not accessible for wheelchairs, and there are areas where crouching is required.

4. Longhorn Caverns State Park

While on a weekend getaway to Marble Falls , a cave visit was on our must-do list. This cavern is in the town of Burnet, which is up the road from where we were staying.

I hope you’re OK with walking like a duck. We literally had to crouch over to make it through several areas of the cave. It was OK for me; however, you may want to sit this cave tour out if you have back problems.

Aside from crouching, this cave is one of my favorite guided cave tours I’ve been on so far. Plus, we were able to see bats in the cave. Never before have either of us seen a bat in a cave. So that you know, bats love caves and should not be spooked. And, when taking a photo, do not use the flash.

Longhorn Caverns offers several tours, including a wild tour for the experienced caver. They mentioned the tour to us and showed us several holes where this tour goes. Oh. My. Goodness. not for me!!

5. Natural Bridge Caverns

Haven’t we all been to this cave in New Braunfels a time or two? If not, do not worry. Natural Bridge Caverns is the largest commercial cave in Texas and receives millions of visitors yearly. From the looks of things, they’ve added a zip line course and mining for fossils since our last visit. They also have a wonderful gift shop full of rocks and crystals. I love picking their brain about the crystals.

If my memory serves me correctly, it was very humid inside the cave, and hard for me to breathe. My grandson and husband had no problem.

6. Wonder World Cave And Adventure Park

San Marcos is home to Wonder Cave and Adventure Park . There are several ticket options for adventure – cave only, train ride only, or the all-in-one ticket. If we went, I would go with my grandson; I would have to break out for all of it. From the looks of the website, various events happen at the park throughout the year. This cave will soon be on our list to visit.

7. Caverns Of Sonora

This popular touristy cave lies 80 miles south of San Angelo and in between Big Bend National Park and San Antonio. According to House Beautiful, in 2017, Caverns of Sonora was number 8 on the 30 Most Beautiful Caves Around the World. Another cave to put on your list if you haven’t been.

8. Kickapoo Caverns State Park

Near Del Rio, in Brackettville, TX , Kickapoo Caverns State Park hosts a natural wonder cave. They offer a 3-hour guided cave tour every Saturday at 1 p.m. No other entry into the cave is allowed. The cost is $10 per person and the park entrance fee. Reservations are required. There are also other outdoor activities at the park, such as hiking, mountain biking, bird-watching, and geocaching.

Two Natural Wonders in One Package

Every summer, the largest bat colony in the world gathers at Bracken Cave, and every evening they take flight into the Texas sky in a remarkable display that is a wonder to behold, as they form a massive, swirling cloud that may be the largest single gathering of mammals on earth. For a limited time, we have a select number of tickets available for this experience.

2024 Package Dates

All three experiences begin in the afternoon and can last from 4 to 6 hours. Depending on which package you choose the start time and length of experience will vary. Please look at your tickets for start times and plan to arrive about 30 minutes prior. Upon arrival, all members of our party must check in at the Natural Bridge Caverns Group Sales/Online ticket window. These packages are limited capacity events and refunds will not be given if you are late.

All guests will first experience the Natural Bridge Caverns Discovery Tour and/or Twisted Trails depending on what package you choose. After you experience Natural Bridge Caverns’ attractions, guests will drive their own vehicles to Bracken Cave, located a few miles away for an orientation and the Bracken Bat Flight experience.

The Bracken Bat Flight is an outdoor, natural experience. Please read the information below before purchasing tickets.

Remember that bats are wild animals. Their emergence is a natural occurrence and we cannot control or predict exactly what the bats will do. Emergences and viewing experiences can vary. Natural Bridge Caverns and Bracken Cave are located on two different properties a few miles apart. All guests drive their own vehicles to Bracken Cave. There will be no early departures from Bracken Cave, except in the case of emergencies. Please schedule your meals and children's bed times accordingly. Please do not plan on an exact departure time. Alternate transportation is not provided. Once the viewing has concluded you will not return to Natural Bridge Caverns.

The Bracken Bat Flight experience will take place rain or shine and all sales are final. The entire experience is outside—with no buildings or coverings. Please be prepared for extremely hot temperatures and/or rain.

Vehicle Considerations:

Bracken Cave is located in a natural, unimproved area. The road leading to the Bracken Cave is a dusty ranch road.

Quiet Zone:

The bats can be sensitive to noise so we need all visitors to remain quietly seated as much as possible. Please take this into consideration if you are considering bringing children to view the flight.

Physical Limitations to Consider:

Gravel walking paths and wooden benches are provided. Please consider physical limitations and the Texas summer heat when planning your trip. If you have accessibility needs please call 210-651-6101 before purchasing tickets.

Once you arrive at Bracken Cave the only restroom facility is a unisex Port-a-Potty. There is hand sanitizer available, but no hand washing stations.

What to Wear:

We recommend wearing comfortable hot weather clothing and walking shoes. (*Inside Natural Bridge Caverns we recommend shoes that provide good traction on steep wet surfaces, for Twisted Trails shoes must have a heel strap.)

What to Bring:

We also suggest sunscreen and insect repellent. We recommend bringing a camera but no flash photography is allowed. You may want to bring binoculars as hawks and other birds of prey may be seen.

What You Cannot Bring:

Please DO NOT bring chairs, food, pets, alcohol or any items such as cigarettes, cigars, pipes, matches or lighters. There is absolutely NO SMOKING at Bracken Cave.

At check-in all guests will be required to sign a liability waiver.
