How to Visit Ingapirca Ruins as an Easy Day Trip from Cuenca

The Ingapirca Archeological Complex is filled with history and the compact site can be visited with ease as a day trip from Cuenca Ecuador . Nestled in the mountains of the Cañar Province in Ecuador at close to 10,335 ft (3,150 m) the Ingapirca ruins are worth the trip.

While Ingapirca’s biggest claim to fame is housing the largest Inca ruins in Ecuador, there is so much more to this fascinating place. Long before the arrival of the Incas, this was a sacred space for the Cañari Indigenous people and was known as Hatun Cañar by the native Kichwa language.

Admission into the Ingapirca Archaeological Complex includes a visit through the small informative museum, a guided tour of the site with an extra focus on the Cañari culture, and access to a self-guided hike to the famed Face of the Inca, or “ Cara del Inca .”

This definitive guide explains in detail how to reach Ingapirca from Cuenca, a little about what to expect at the archaeological complex, and tips to explore more Cañari and Inca ruins in Ecuador.

Welcome to Inngapirca. The buses drop less than a 10 minute casual walk to the main entrance of the Ingapirca Archaeological Complex.

A common mistake when visiting Ingapirca is that people focus on the phrase “largest Inca ruins in Ecuador.” Yes, there are remnants of the Inca Empire, but this site is more about the history, fusion, and building techniques of the Cañari and Incan cultures. So, don’t go in with the expectations that this place is similar or even in comparison to the most well known Inca site of South America, Machu Picchu . Rather, go in with the mindset to learn more and appreciate the fascinating Cañari culture.

Make sure to visit the small museum before your scheduled entrance time to the Ingapirca Complex. The museum only has Spanish plaques, but it showcases artifacts that were found nearby, informative maps about Cañari cities and sites, and is fairly easy to have a basic comprehension, even if you don’t speak Spanish. The artifacts are worth a quick glance. The most fascinating thing here was the small bits of original textiles that have somehow survived the test of time! Guided Ingapirca Tour

Tomb Ingapirca, stone, rocks, things to see at Ingapirca, terraces, grass, day trips from Cuenca Ecuador

The name “Ingapirca” comes from the Incas, which literally translates to mean “Inca Wall.” Before the Incas arrived in the mid 1400’s, this place was called Hatun Cañar by the Indigenous Cañari people.

The Cañari worshipped the moon, or Killa , in Kichwa. Out of respect, they would not look at her directly, rather in reflections that shimmered in pools of water seen in holes carved in stones. They had a 28 day calendar, which resulted in 13 moons a year. Women were respected and oftentimes leaders and high priestesses while the men worked with cultivating crops and building.

The tour begins with a glimpse at the qullqas, or a place to store seeds and other foods in a natural refrigeration system. Next, a stop by a significant tomb where a woman of importance, possibly a Priestess was buried along with 10 others. It is believed that this burial tomb was the Cañari’s Temple of the Moon after the Inca conquest. Wander past a peculiar example of the calendar with 28 days. Stroll on the actual Inca Road system of Qhapaq Ñan . There are a few small examples of Inca baths.

The Incas arrived and could not conquer Ingapirca. Instead, they married into and merged with the Cañari. After their acquisition of Hatun Cañar , they built a Temple of the Sun on top of the original Moon Temple. The Inca building techniques are distinct, as you can see there is no mortar in the building process. The two building methods between the Incas and Cañari can be seen today.

Before the main Sun Temple of Ingapirca, find the acllahuasi, which housed sacred virgins. These women were picked at a young age and lived together in this area. They were protected by eunuchs and taught procedures from cooking, to sewing, and other essential life skills.

Path of Intihuaycho Sun Valley

La Tortuga, Ingapirca ruins, self guided Sun Valley tour, hiking path, trees, Ingapirca Archaeological Complex

After the guided tour, take the self-guided hiking tour of the Sun Valley. The scenic path literally begins across the street and can take as little as 25 minutes to an hour, depending if you do the whole loop or simply visit the “Face of the Inca.”

The trail is picturesque, so I suggest starting from the beginning and relish in the tranquility and beauty!

The first site is a view of the Inca Game. Continue on the path past a stone that is shaped like a turtle, or “la tortuga.” There is another stone fragment a little further up the trail, but I think the natural pattern on a rock that looks like a Sun Face is transfixing. After that, the main attraction of the hiking trail is the Face of the Inca. Can you see her there? To me, she is soft and delicate, more of the feminine Cañari moon than the Inca’s masculine sun.

⁉️ Another Inca Face? Did you know in the village of Ollantaytambo it is rumored that the Inca Creator God of Wiracocha is on the mountainside in Peru’s Sacred Valley . However, most people debunk this theory and say it is a natural rock face, like this one inn the Sun Valley. If you’ve been to both, I’d love your thoughts?

While the ruins of Ingapirca are the most famous, there are other notable Inca ruins in Ecuador, many of them are nearby in the Cañari Province Remember, many of these sites originally belonged to the Cañari people are were incorporated into the Inca Empire.

In fact, if you are visiting Ingapirca without a tour, I highly suggest stopping on the way back to El Tambo the Coyoctor Archaeological Complex.

Coyoctor Archaeological Park

If coming from Ingapirca Ecuador, tell the driver you wish to exit at Coyoctor. This small hamlet is home to the Coyoctor Archaeological Site of the “Baños del Inca.”

Exit the bus and take the downhill walk that’s close to 3/4 of a mile to the Baños. Honestly, they were shut the day I tried to visit, but still loved them and they are worth the trip! Even from a distance, I could appreciate the structures.

What makes this stop worthwhile, even if the Coyoctor ruins are shut is the scenic path to the Plaza del Arte in El Tambo Canton.

The Path from Coyoctor to El Tambo

The Baños del Inca in Coyoctor are next to the trailhead that leads to the El Tambo Plaza del Arte.

Exit the Baños, there is a signboard, but in more straightforward of terms, simply follow along with the abandoned railroad tracks.

The trail is lovely and runs parallel to small authentic communities. Be prepared to see farmers planting crops without modern equipment, shepherds collecting food for their animals, and those pigs and goats looking at you curiously. The flat and stunning path ends at the Plaza de Arte in El Tambo where there are usually children playing soccer and lovers embracing in a stranded railcar. There is a tourist information center in the abandoned train station and a few small restaurants and artisan shops.

🥾 Hiking Guide | Exit the bus here for the Coyoctor Archaeological Site | If the Baños de Inca are open pay $1 and explore the small site here | Continue to the Plaza de Arte in El Tambo | Distance: less than 3 miles | Duration: +/- 45 minutes

This plaza is less than a 5 minute walk to the main El Tambo Plaza, which boasts a beautiful church and those buses that stop in Cañar that lead to Cuenca.

Cojitambo Archaeological Park

Cojitambo ruins, Cojitambo Archaeological Site, Sangay National Park, grass, terraces, sky, Inca ruins Ecuador, Cañari sites

Another spot to visit ancient ruins in Ecuador is from the small village of Cojitambo, found near Azogues in the Cañar Province. The town itself is tiny, but climb to the hilltop ruins that were again originally built by the Cañari and integrated into the sprawling Inca empire. The Cojitambo Archaeological site is less than 20 miles from Ingapirca, and sits at an altitude just over 10,100 ft.

Take the scenic hiking path through the Sangay National Park, which is again part of the old Inca road system of  Qhapaq Ñan . The road leads to the Cojitambo ruins. What makes this place unique is the use of volcanic rocks that followed the building technique of  “picado.”  The picado method was implemented by placing stones on top of surfaces to create flat walls.

After wandering the terraces climb up to the nearby mirador. The jagged rocks offer incredible views of Cojitambo village down below, and in the far off distance, the larger city of Azogues. The valley is picturesque and the views from the mirador do not disappoint. These rocks are steep and makes Cojitambo a popular destination for rock climbers.

The best way to visit the Cojitambo Archaeological Site is as a day trip from Cuenca. Hop on a bus to the city of Azogus and continue to Cojitambo from there.

Chobshi Ruins Near SigSig

Cañar ruins, Chobshi, trees, grass, plants, stones, mountains, clouds, sky

A little outside the artisan village of SigSig is an area known as Chobshi. Here, find tranquil nature along the Rio Cuchipampa and stop by the hidden Cañari ruins. Nearby is the Cueva Negra where some peculiar remnants and artifacts have been discovered, even animal bones. The name literally translate to black cave and archaeologists question if this cave was used well before the the ancient Cañari civilization.

Within a short walking distance from the cave, find the stone ruins of Chobshi. This site is free to explore. If you have time, wander past the stone walls to find a distinct rock with a scooped out center. This is believed to be another spot to observe their God, the Moon, in the reflection of water.

There is a small museum next to the ruins, but it’s only open on the weekends.

Cañari sites are free to explore  |  Museo De Chobshi only open Sat & Sun 9:00 – 17:00, or by appointment

There are frequent bus departures to the village of SigSig from Cuenca’s main bus terminal.

Thanks they are smaller than I imagined, but the history and nearby sites are really interesting. I loved walking along the abandoned railroad tracks after! 💚

I’ve always wanted to go to Equador! The Baños de Cuenca sound amazing! What time of year did you go?

Thanks! I’ve been to Ecuador three times… and I usually end up going around November, which is rainy season, but still nice. Most afternoons have a rain shower, but the mornings are sunny or the clouds breakaway for midday sun. Right now, in December it has been warmer with less rain. I like rainy season as things are so green! 💚

I love discovering places that have layers and layers of history and culture! Thanks for putting this on the map for me as I’m planning a trip to South America for next year!

Visiting Ingapirca Ruins from Cuenca, Ecuador

Visiting Ingapirca – Ecuador’s largest site for ancient ruins – is a great day trip from Cuenca , Ecuador.

This post shares what we learned about the Ingapirca ruins and how to get there.

Visiting Ingapirca Ruins from Cuenca, Ecuador | Intentional Travelers

How to Get to Ingapirca Ruins from Cuenca, Ecuador

From Cuenca, you can either arrange a package tour , drive yourself, or take public transit .

For those wanting to travel independently by bus, the best option is to take the 9am bus from Terminal Terrestre.

This bus goes all the way to the ruins, waits two+ hours, and returns to the bus station in Cuenca. It is $3.50 per person each way, plus 10 cents to get through the turnstile at Terminal Terrestre.

There is supposedly a second bus that does the same route later in the day, but it may not always be running. Other buses are more frequent but would take you to the town of Cañari and you’d have to pay for a taxi to the ruins and find your way back as well.

Take a full-day guided tour with transport from Cuenca to Ingapirca Archeological site >

If you haven’t had a chance to see more of the Andes to the North of Cuenca, you will really enjoy the views of the valleys and farmland out your window. It is a two hour trip but there’s a lot to see.

When you arrive at Ingapirca, buy a ticket at the information center (bathrooms are also available there), tell them if you want an English or a Spanish tour, and they will give you a tour time. We only had to wait about 15 minutes.

Our group was about 10 people and the guide was a local who had a thick accent but was very animated. It’s my understanding that the guided tour is required – which really helps to get more out of the experience anyway, and it is included in the price of entry.

About Ingapirca, Ecuador

Although the ruins have not been preserved as well as other famous sites – they were discovered buried under farm land, the tribal history behind it was still very interesting.

Here are some of the things we learned from our guide:

  • The native Cañari were present at Ingapirca (and Cuenca) before the Incas. The Cañari worshipped the moon and maintained a matriarchal society. Their construction is characterized by round lines. The Incas, on the other hand, worshipped the sun, were patriarchal, and built in rectangular designs.
  • Buried in one of the sacred sites, they found a richly-adorned female ruler surrounded by a circle of servants buried alongside her in the fetal position!
  • The Incas could not conquer the Cañari so they actually allied with them, lived together and intermixed, and eventually overtook them – at least culturally – around 1470.
  • Ingapirca’s ruins were uncovered under a farm, where only the sun temple had previously been exposed. Archeologists worked on the site around the 1970s.
  • It estimated that about 80 people lived within Ingapirca, primarily people of religious and political importance. In the surrounding areas were another couple thousand inhabitants.
  • The famous Incan stacked stones without mortar are only found in their most sacred spaces.
  • Ingapirca is the site of the only Incan temple that exists in an oval shape, which is due to the strength of the Cañari and their style of architecture.

Visiting Ingapirca Ruins from Cuenca, Ecuador | Intentional Travelers

We were curious about walking around the surrounding area more after the tour (there is a trail near the exit that’s supposed to lead to a face carved into the rocks), but we only had time to eat lunch ($2.50 almuerzos) and speed through the little museum of artifacts.

Although a little bit more time might have been nice, in my opinion, it wasn’t worth the hassle to figure out an alternate way back.

We especially liked these clay pot people, which were on display in the Ingapirca museum as well as the artifact museum in Cuenca.

Ingapirca from Cuenca Conclusion

This was a great day trip from Cuenca, in our opinion. As Ecuador’s most significant archeological site, it’s especially interesting for those fascinated by ancient civilizations.

If you’re not ready to visit Ingapirca independently, you can always book a guided day tour with transportation included from Cuenca.

Last year I took the bus from El Tambo for 50 cents, had a lovely museum visit while waiting for the ruins to open. Great tour with an English-speaking woman, then tipped her. (Wages are low in rural Ecuador.) Cheap, local bus back. Plenty of buses from El Tambo to Cuena all day long: it’s the PanAmerican highway. Mind you, the first day I went the ruins were closed. They still let me use the bathroom, so I hiked around the short trails with the carved Incan face and the hilltop snake. Lunch in the village. Loved my two trips.

Thanks for sharing! Glad you enjoyed your trips to Ingapirca.

INGAPIRCA inca ruins Ecuador

Inside the Inca Ruins of Ecuador

According to historic predictions based on research, the Incas arrived at the province with a plan to conquer the Cañaris. This was typical of the Incas, as you can tell from their expansive empire. The Cañaris were famous for being warriors, and so after the Incas invaded the Cañaris were forced to join the Incan army and the two cultures worked alongside each other while the Incas remained in power. This is the reason why you can clearly see architectural influences from both the Incas and the Cañaris at the Ingapirca archaeological complex.

The reason why historians know the difference between the two civilizations is their distinctive styles of construction, examples of each can be seen at the Ingapirca ruins. The Cañaris used a form of mortar to glue the rocks together, in a style similar to modern bricks and cement. The Incas cut large blocks in precise measurements so they would fit together seamlessly.

Inca ruins ecuador

In typical Inca ruin style, Ingapirca is home to a huge network of ancient stone walls, and remnants of other buildings can still be seen everywhere you look. Some of these buildings include storage rooms, Sun Temple, observatories, and tombs. You can see all of these incredible parts of history if you take a tour of Ingapirca .

The Temple of the Sun in the Inca Ruins in Ecuador

The Temple of the Sun is the centerpiece and the most famous Inca ruin in the entire site, making it probably the most famous Inca ruin in Ecuador. Standing strong and spectacular, it remains almost intact with its huge walls and careful structures built to track the movement of the sun. They did this by positioning the temple on top of a large rock. Because of this, the Incas could track the time of year, the season, and the time of day by using the sun. The structure was also used as an observatory.

The temple was also the sacrificial site where both humans (mostly virgin women) and animals (llamas and alpacas) were offered to the Gods. Some also believe that it was used as a fortress too (although this was much later, as the Incas fought the Spanish). Surrounding the temple are colas (the storage chambers), and acllahuasi, the place where sacrificial virgins lived. You will also find a bathing area and patios near the temple.

Cara del Inca

Ingapirca archaeological complex is home to the Cara del Inca. This rock formation is said to be the reason why the Incas chose that particular site to build their famed Temple of the Sun. Allegedly, they believed that the Face of the Inca would watch over and protect them from any harm.

The face-shaped rock is visible from the temple and can be reached by a short hike from these Inca ruins in Ecuador. The stark resemblance of the rock to a human face is bound to leave you amazed.

Onsite Archeological Museum

The museum is situated in the same complex and just like the ruins, it too is administered by the indigenous Cañari people. It displays an illustrative diorama of the entire site, a mummy, and several artifacts that belonged to both the Inca and Cañari civilizations. The admission to the museum is included in the entrance fee to the entire archeological complex.

Nearby Houses Amid Ingapirca Ruins

While any archeological site in Ecuador automatically becomes the property of the government, Ingapirca’s complex is still home to many indigenous families. Locals and governments believe that the houses were built to hide away Incan and Cañari treasures. There are laws protecting the houses, and so no one knows if there is any truth in these rumors.

The Ingapirca complex is one of Ecuador’s most important historical complex. Despite being partially deconstructed by the Spanish for the materials, it is still a wholly impressive place that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. Just a few hours travel from Cuenca , you can easily access this place. If you are interested in a tour of Ingapirca, then consider Ecuador Hop !

Cultural Experiences To Have Before Leaving Ecuador

T here is so much to explore in Ecuador. While it may not be the biggest country in South America , the culture is rich, the cuisine is delightful and the experiences are everlasting. There’s beautiful natural landscapes, ancient ruins and world-class marketplaces to explore. Whether you’re visiting for a long time or just briefly, there are a few cultural experiences you have to try before wrapping up a visit to Ecuador.

Explore an Ecuadorian Marketplace

Otavalo is the home of one of Ecuador’s most popular marketplaces. Some describe it as a sensory playground with smells, sounds and vibrant colors experienced around every corner. The marketplace is held everyday at the Plaza de los Ponchos. It’s the perfect place to experience traditional South American shopping culture, bartering practices and Ecuadorian cuisine. There are a plethora of vendors selling everything from artisan crafts and Panama hats to woven tapestries and jewelry made from local gemstones.

Hike Through the Jungle at Puyo

One of the best ways to explore the rainforest in Ecuador is on a guided tour. There are many tour opportunities available to see the jungle at Puyo. Whether you decide to hike or go by van, its definitely a sight worth seeing. There are waterfalls and swimming holes to swim in, hiking trails to run down and rivers to canoe down. Some tours are multi-day and visit locals who live within the rainforest. Visiting the Ecuadorian rainforest is a cultural treat every visitor should check out.

Reimagine Ancient Life at the Ingapirca Ruins

Ancient ruins serve as reminders that before modern times, indigenous people ruled and were prosperous. South America has some of the oldest ruins of past civilizations, and Ecuador is no exception. The Ingapirca Ruins are the largest archaeological Incan site in the country. Located in Canar, visitors can check out the ruins on guided tours and use their imagination to reimagine ancient life.

Spend the Night at an Old Hacienda

There are plenty of old haciendas in Ecuador. These giant farmhouse estates served as the homes of Spanish conquistadors back in the day. Now, many of them are rented out to vacationing travelers or are tourist attractions showcasing the country’s rich history. Some of the top Ecuadorian haciendas to spend a night at include Hacienda El Porvenir, Hacienda Tambopaxi and Hacienda Cusin. These traditional homes are a wonderful way to experience Ecuador’s old world charm and elaborate architecture.

Take a Train Ride Through the Avenue of Volcanoes

Travelers can enjoy a full day of picturesque landscapes and scenery as they ride through the Avenue of Volcanoes. The avenue includes 200 miles of roads winding through the Andeans. There are eight beautiful, snow-mantled mountains surrounding travelers as the train whisks them through the hills. Full of national parks, hidden nature coves and a few traditional markets, a train ride through the avenue is a treasure for adventurous travelers.

Go Whale Watching off the Coast of Salinas

Salinas is one of the most popular beaches in Ecuador. It’s also an excellent location for whale watching. Once you’re done surfing and sunbathing, take some time to view the whales before leaving Ecuador. Whale watching tours in Salinas allows travelers to see humpback whales in their natural habitat. The best season to catch the majestic mammals is from mid-June to October. However, if you are traveling outside of whale watching season, Salinas also has a museum dedicated to the incredible animals.

  • beverlywmay 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Awesome tour with the guide Luis! Cuenca was a highlight of my Ecuador trip, in large part due to Cuenca Bestours and their guide Luis. They created a custom 2 day itinerary that strung together four of their half day and one day tours- Cajas, the city and Ingapirca. I saw a ton in a short period with a knowledgeable, passionate and sociable guide- highly recommended! As many tourists had cancelled coming to Ecuador due to foreign news ( dont believe any of it! Super safe and esp Cuenca is affluent, clean, beautiful and safe)… my tour ended up being a private. CuencaBestours gave me a cery reasonable rate and Luis was a great guide. He grew up near Ingapirca, so if you go on that tour you will see his family’s region. Cajas was a higjlight- it reminded me of iceland- treeless but green and beautiful. Recommended! We were surprised by the number of people in our tour. We were told it was 2 other people but we had a van of 12. Way too many for a van. The buffet lunch was also a big disappointment. The food was marginal at best. Finally, having to pay for a weaving demonstration was really cheap. Didn't our group pay enough already that you made us pay $1 for a demo we didn't ask for? • R8181HXjohny 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Coastal Trip in Ecuador January 2024 This was our 3rd trip to Ecuador and our second using Cuenca Bestours for our travel plans. We are very happy with the service and attention that we received from this company during our stay in Ecuador. Everything was taken care of from tour plan and booking the hotels to all of our travel around the country. This trip took place in January of 2024 right after the country had declared a war on the cartels. A curfew had been put in place from 11pm to 5am throughout the country. This had no impact on our tour at all. We felt safe the whole time we were in Ecuador and everyone was so happy to see us visit their country. We did run into two roadblocks/ check points along the highways. At one they checked our passports and at another they also checked the back of our vehicle. There was added presence of police and military in different places but it was not obtrusive and contributed to feeling safer in those locations. We did a coastal tour that took us to Manta, Puerto Lopez, Montinita, Salinas, and Playas. We also spent the night in Guayaquil for one night close to the airport before catching our flight out the next day. There was tighter security at the airport but no issues and no delays. All of our tours were top notch and on some, we were the only ones taking the tour. This country is really having a hard time with the lack of tourism right now. The beaches were mostly empty. Most business were open but some were closed due to lack of people. We felt totally safe during our trip. Our guides were key to making sure we arrived at all of our hotels safely and made sure our stay was what we expected. You can trust them to handle everything professionally and to make adjustments in the schedule if needed. I cannot recommend this company highly enough. They are great at what they do and will give a memorable trip in this great country of Ecuador. Read more Written February 8, 2024
  • borisk907 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles A great agent for your Ecuador plans We, a group of 6 people, feel that a positive review is the least that we can do for the Cuenca Bestours company and its travel planner and tour guide Javier Vallejo, with whom we had the pleasure to work on our travel plans. Javier showed patience and knowledge that resulted in an excellent itinerary for exploring Ecuador. He also advised us about the best accommodations that he was able to arrange at very competitive prices. It was very unfortunate that just when our plans were finalized and all reservations made, the security situation in Ecuador took a sharp turn to the worse due to the drugs related violence. With the US State Department issuing very troubling travel advisories, we decided that exploring Ecuador in these conditions will not be enjoyable, if not just outright dangerous. Javier showed total understanding and, while probably being disappointed, showed nothing but grace and efficiency in promptly arranging refunds of our deposits. We hope to come back to our plans of visiting Ecuador as soon as the security situation in the country will return to normalcy, and will certainly do it with Javier. If you too are interested in visiting Ecuador, we can’t recommend a better agent. Read more Written February 5, 2024
