How to find cheap flights, what is the best day to buy a plane ticket.

This just in! Airfares offered on Thursdays tend to be the cheapest, according to flight demand on Travelocity in 2021. Tuesday and Wednesday prices are also good, but you may want to prepare your budget if booking during the weekend, as data shows that is when prices are generally at their highest.

What are the cheapest days to fly?

Frequent travelers may already know this, but earlier in the week can be the cheapest time to fly. In 2021, flights departing on a Monday were generally the cheapest of the week, whereas you may pay a premium for weekend flights when demand is usually high. On average, tickets were most expensive for Saturday departures, so if you need to fly out on a weekend, you might look for deals ahead of time.

How far in advance can you book a flight?

Trying to figure out how early you should book your flight? It’s possible to start comparing international airfares on Travelocity up to 12 months in advance. However, it does depend on the carrier as not all airlines release their prices that far out. According to our 2021 flight demand trends, last minute planners can still bag a bargain with some of the cheapest fares appearing 0-2 weeks prior to their travel dates.

*According to flight demand on Travelocity.com from January to December 2021. Savings are subject to change based on departure location, date and destination.

Followed by a trip

When guests stay at the property, they check out how quiet the room is, how friendly the staff is, and more.

And finally, a review

After their trip, guests tell us about their stay. We check for naughty words and verify the authenticity of all guest reviews before adding them to our site.

Cheap Flights

Find cheap flight deals

Wonderful things are happening

How to Book Cheap Flights?

  • Fly during the working week Opting to take your flight during the working week can save you money. Flights departing over this period – especially Tuesdays and Wednesdays – are cheaper, mainly because these days are less popular to travel on.
  • Have a look at airline websites Many airline websites have made it simpler to identify the inexpensive days to fly by displaying a "calendar view" booking system. This system allows you to scan prices ranging across the week that you are searching.
  • Consider flights with less-popular departure times You may also get a bargain flight if you're willing to fly at an early hour. It may well be less expensive to fly at 6 am than at later times due to that time spot being less popular. The only problem you could face is getting to the airport at this time; make sure that public transport is running if you can't take a taxi or get a lift to the airport.
  • Find a better price on the Trip.com app This may sound like I'm stating the obvious, but you'd be surprised at the number of people who settle for a price without first shopping around and doing some research. We suggest you have a look for bargains on the Trip.com app. The Trip.com Save & Fly browser extension is a big help when learning how to get cheap flight tickets. While you're looking for airline tickets online, the extension notifies you of whether the exact same flight is available on Trip.com at a better price. It's completely free to install and use, and it takes some of the pressure off booking your tickets.
  • Book early instead of waiting until the last minute Don't get fooled into thinking that last-minute deals are necessarily the best option for cheap flight tickets because they seldom are. The smart move is to book early, even as far as a year in advance if that is possible for the flight you require. Flight tickets have a tendency to be cheaper when they are first released – which is normally about a year before the flight – so have a look online as soon as the flights you want are available. This is particularly true if you are planning to travel during school holidays or to a destination where a famous event is taking place. These prices will increase rapidly, so book before the masses do. The price of a flight may drop again before re-climbing in the last few days before the flight takes off but they also may not. It's not worth the risk of waiting for a drop in prices only to be faced with higher prices for leaving it until the last minute. You also run the risk that the tickets will become sold out before you book yours, especially if it's a popular flight. If you're willing to be flexible, which is really the name of the game for cheap flight tickets, then have a look at a flight search engine as it may post flight tickets which get lower in price as the flight time approaches.
  • Use a credit card in a wiser way There are a lot of advantages to paying for a flight with a credit card. One advantage is that you are protected when you make bigger purchases. For example, if you spend more than $100 on a flight, you will be covered for a refund if the airline or travel company goes out of business. This will not necessarily be the case if you pay with a debit card so check first. Credit cards are also more useful for spending in a foreign country and give you better exchange rates than you would get with your debit card. Certain credit cards will offer you air miles for each sum of money spent, thus saving you a bit more on your flight tickets. They may also give you a certain amount of cashback on the purchase of your flight ticket.
  • Choose flights with a connection Booking a flight with a connection is nearly always a cheaper option, especially on longer-haul flights. The best thing to do is to uncheck the "non-stop only" option on your flight booking website's search engine, and have a look to see if the flights shown are any cheaper. However, there is a degree of risk involved in this method of getting cheap air tickets. If one of your earlier flights is delayed, this could mean that you miss a later connecting flight.
  • Book package holidays which may offer cheap flight tickets If you book a package holiday, you are likely to get discounts on flights as well as accommodation. This is because travel companies book tickets in such large volumes that they get huge discounts. It is sometimes possible to get a whole holiday for less than the price of a regular flight.
  • Be aware of hidden costs of cheap flights Be aware that cheap flight tickets with budget airlines can be deceptive. Very often there can be hidden costs, so check for air taxes, baggage fees, or seat selection costs before you buy. Airlines can also add travel insurance and other features on automatically without checking to see if you want them first. Travel light if it's possible. Carry-on baggage is usually free, but be sure to check the regulations on weight limitations first.

Tips of How to Book Cheap Fligths

Fly during the working weekdays.

Opting to take your flight during the working week can save you money as flight prices for departures during the working week, especially Tuesdays and Wednesdays, are cheaper.

Have a look at airline websites

Many airline websites have made it simpler to identify the inexpensive days to fly by displaying a ' calendar view ' booking system.

Think about the time of departure on the day you book your flight

You may also get a bargain flight if you ' re willing to fly at an early hour. It may well be less expensive to fly at 6 am than at later times due to that time spot being less popular.

Booking tickets via the Trip.com APP

This may sound like I ' m stating the obvious but you ' d be surprised at the number of people who settle for a price without first shopping around and researching the prices. I suggest you have a look for bargains on the Trip.com APP, details on how to download this app appear below.

Last-minute deals aren't always cheaper so book early

The clever thinking is to book early, even as early as up to a year in advance if that is possible for the flight you require. Flight tickets have a tendency to be cheaper when they are first released- which is normally about a year before the flight.

How to get cheap flight tickets by paying with a credit card

There are a lot of advantages to playing for a flight with a credit card. One of the advantages of paying with a credit card is that you are protected when you make bigger purchases.

How to get cheap flight tickets-flight with a connection

Booking a flight with a connection is nearly always a cheaper option, certainly on longer-haul flights. The best thing to do is to uncheck the ' direct flights only ' option on your flight booking website ' s search engine and have a look to see if the flights are any cheaper.

Package holidays can offer you cheap flight tickets

If you book a package holiday you are likely to get discounts on flights as well as accommodation. This is because travel companies book tickets in such large amounts, they get huge discounts.

Watch out for hidden costs when booking cheap flight tickets

Be aware that cheap flight tickets with budget airlines can be deceptive.

Plan your trip far in advance

You may have heard that there are magical times when you can book a flight to snag the best possible price on airline tickets.

However, that might not always be the case, especially considering the fluctuating price of oil and general market uncertainty.

To that end, it’s best to book your flight as soon as you know you will be taking one. Travel experts suggest booking your summer trip in winter, and vice versa. Think of it like buying a bathing suit when it’s chilly or a parka when it’s beach weather.

Low-cost airline Breeze Airways is teaming up with Priceline to sell flights on the online site, making it easier to book tickets.

With the new partnership, Priceline has become the first and only online travel booking site to sell Breeze flights, the airline shared with Travel + Leisure . Previously, the only way to book a flight with the carrier was on its website or through its mobile app.

“We’re excited to work with Priceline, our first-ever OTA partner, to bring Breeze flights to a broader audience,” Lukas Johnson, Breeze’s chief commercial officer, said in a statement shared with T+L. “Now Priceline’s many users have another way to book their next getaway on Breeze.”

Travelers can now book all of Breeze’s 170 routes directly through Priceline, and will soon be able to choose from the airline’s three fare bundles: “Nice,” “Nicer,” and “ Nicest ,” which includes Breeze Ascent complete with perks like checked baggage, in-seat USB and USB-C charging ports, and complimentary snacks and beverages.

Brigit Zimmerman, Priceline’s chief commercial officer, said the new partnership reinforces the company’s “commitment to offering unparalleled travel opportunities and best-in-class deals for our customers.”

Breeze was first created in 2021 by former JetBlue founder David Neeleman and has rapidly expanded since, now flying to 51 cities across 27 different states. The airline also plans to start flying to international destinations in the near future.

Breeze has also committed to using an all-Airbus A220 fleet for its scheduled service by the end of 2024.

For its part, Priceline offers a “VIP” membership program that offers discounts on bookings like hotels and car rentals along with “insider coupons.”

In addition to Breeze, travelers can purchase flights from other airlines directly on Priceline, including from major carriers like Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, American Airlines, and JetBlue, as well as low-cost carriers like Spirit Airlines and Frontier Airlines.

8 Incidents in 2 Weeks: What’s Going on With United’s Planes?

While no one was injured, most of the mishaps required emergency landings or diversions. One safety expert said the incidents were not the result of “systemic problems.”

Two blue-and-white commercial airplanes with the word “United” painted on their sides sit on the tarmac at an airport.

By Christine Chung

An engine fire sparked by plastic packaging wrap , a tire lost shortly after takeoff and a plane veering off the runway : These are among the eight incidents that have occurred over the past two weeks on flights operated by United Airlines. While no injuries — or worse — have been reported, the mishaps have generated headlines and stoked rising anxiety about aviation safety among federal officials and passengers alike.

All of the incidents happened on flights that took off from or were headed to airports in the United States, and five involved airplanes made by Boeing, a manufacturer already under intense scrutiny. In January, a door plug blew out of an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 Max 9 jetliner in mid-flight, forcing the plane to make an emergency landing.

United, one of the world’s largest airlines, flies aircraft manufactured mainly by Boeing and Airbus. In an email United began sending to customers on Monday, the company’s chief executive, Scott Kirby, wrote that while the recent incidents were unrelated, they were “reminders of the importance of safety.”

“I want you to know that these incidents have our attention and have sharpened our focus,” he continued, adding that every case was being reviewed by the airline and would influence its safety training and procedures.

Here’s what travelers should know about the latest in airplane woes.

What exactly happened on or to the planes?

Most of the incidents reported in the last two weeks required emergency landings or diversions.

March 4: A Boeing 737-900 departing from George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston returned to the airport to make an emergency landing after one of the plane engines ingested and burned plastic wrap .

March 7: A Boeing 777 leaving San Francisco for Osaka, Japan, made an emergency landing at Los Angeles International Airport after the aircraft lost a tire .

March 8: A Boeing 737 Max 8 veered off the runway upon landing at George Bush Airport in Houston and tilted onto the grass .

Later that day, a flight leaving San Francisco for Mexico City was diverted to Los Angeles after the Airbus A320 experienced issues with its hydraulic system.

March 9: An Airbus A320 heading to Salt Lake City turned back to Chicago O’Hare International Airport after it reported maintenance issues .

March 11: A Boeing 777, flying from Sydney, Australia , to San Francisco, turned back after takeoff because the plane had a hydraulic leak.

March 14: An Airbus A320 that departed from Dallas Fort Worth International Airport had a hydraulic leak shortly before it landed in its scheduled destination, San Francisco.

Later that day, a Boeing 737-800 that took off from San Francisco landed at Rogue Valley International Medford Airport in Oregon missing an external panel .

Are the recent issues typical, or cause for concern?

The mishaps were not the result of “systemic problems,” said Robert Sumwalt, a former chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board who now heads a new aviation safety center at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

“Some of these issues are things that happen occasionally, but often don’t get reported in media,” Mr. Sumwalt said, though he emphasized that none were acceptable.

Kyra Dempsey, who writes about aviation accidents in a blog called Admiral Cloudberg, said that United’s recent issues were being “falsely conflated with Boeing’s troubles.”

“While it’s bad luck that United had so many incidents in such a short period, in general such incidents happen frequently around the world and they aren’t on the rise overall,” Ms. Dempsey said.

How has United responded?

Mr. Kirby’s 270-word message to United customers, including to members of the airline’s frequent flier program, started to be sent on Monday morning, said Josh Freed, a spokesman for United.

Starting in May, United pilots will have an extra day of in-person training, a change that was already planned before the incidents, Mr. Kirby wrote. The airline will also use a “centralized training curriculum for our new hire maintenance technicians” and will dedicate additional resources to the carrier’s supply chain.

What government agencies oversee these issues, and how are they responding?

The Federal Aviation Administration regulates the country’s aviation system and investigates safety incidents on U.S. airlines, while the N.T.S.B. investigates the causes of accidents, collisions and crashes involving planes flown by U.S. carriers, in addition to other accidents involving commercial and mass transit operators. Both agencies have discretion on what they investigate, Mr. Sumwalt said.

Currently, the N.T.S.B. is investigating the incident that occurred on March 8 in Houston, when the plane veered off the runway, an agency spokesperson said. The N.T.S.B. is also looking into a Feb. 10 Los Angeles-to-Newark flight , operated by United, that experienced severe turbulence, leading to injuries among more than a dozen passengers. (The Boeing 777 landed normally, but the flight was met by medical personnel.)

Safety experts said some issues don’t necessarily rise to the level of an investigation by either agency.

For example, partial loss of some of an airplane’s multiple hydraulics systems is common, said Michael McCormick, an assistant professor at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and a former F.A.A. control tower operator. The F.A.A. may or may not get involved for this kind of issue, unless there’s a pattern, Mr. Sumwalt said.

The January episode involving the blown door plug aboard the Alaska Airlines jet is under investigation by the N.T.S.B. and the Justice Department.

Boeing: A Company in Turmoil

Boeing is weathering a particularly difficult period: two fatal crashes, a loose panel that blew out during a flight, quality concerns and production slowdowns..

United’s Planes : An engine fire sparked by plastic packaging wrap, a tire lost shortly after takeoff and a plane veering off the runway: These are among several incidents that have occurred over two weeks  on Boeing flights operated by United Airlines.

Alaska Airlines Flight 1282: After a section of a plane headed for Ontario, Calif., blew out  10 minutes after it took off , there was increased scrutiny  on the plane’s manufacturer: Boeing . The Justice Department has since launched a criminal investigation .

Quality Control Issues: An audit that was initiated by the Federal Aviation Administration after the Alaska Airlines incident found dozens of problems  throughout Boeing’s manufacturing process and one of its key suppliers.

Whistleblower’s Death: John Barnett, a former quality manager for the company, was found dead in Charleston  in March with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was set to testify in a lawsuit in which he accused Boeing of retaliation for his complaints about quality and safety.

At Fault: A report released in February by the Federal Aviation Administration said that Boeing’s safety culture remains flawed , despite improvements made after two fatal crashes  in 2018 and 2019.

Solving an Enduring Crisis: The Federal Aviation Administration has asked Boeing to produce an action plan  to address quality control issues. We asked experts how Boeing should try and fix its longstanding problems .

'Supply and demand on steroids' as peak Sydney to Melbourne flights exceed $900. What does it mean for holiday travel?

People crowded around and liked up at check-in terminals at Rex Airlines departures area at Sydney Airport

If you're not a fan of watching race cars go around in circles, you may have gotten a shock if you needed to book a flight from Sydney to Melbourne this week.

With Formula 1 grand prix events kicking off at Melbourne's Albert Park on Thursday, it was rare to spot a one-way fare for less than $400 from Monday.

By Wednesday, across Jetstar, Rex, Virgin and Qantas, flights were a minimum of about $500 to upwards of $900.

In some instances, it was cheaper to book a seat in business class than economy.

While it's not uncommon for airlines to hike up prices around sporting events, holidays and concerts, Chris Ford from Compare the Market said with Easter approaching this was a "double whammy".

"It's sort of a double hit that can extend over a period of time," he told the ABC.

Experts have called it "supply and demand on steroids" during peak periods.

A close of up a crowd cheering at the Grand Prix.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) monitors the prices and profits of the major domestic airlines but plays no role in regulating fares.

So, airlines have the freedom to increase prices according to market demand and conditions, aviation analyst and associate professor at RMIT, Chrystal Zhang, said.

"The key question is really, 'How high can the airline go?'"

She warned nowadays people need to book trips months in advance and be willing to be flexible around "hot events" and holidays.

Best days to avoid Easter holiday hikes

Concerts and events generally only lead to fluctuations over a few days, Mr Ford said.

But when Taylor Swift mania took hold last month, airfares to Sydney and Melbourne spiked over a sustained period, even across regional airports.

In the lead-up to Easter, Compare the Market analysed which days were best to travel and how long it would take for prices to start to drop.

It found consistent patterns in its reviews over Christmas, showing fares inevitably "skyrocket" before public holiday days.

People sit in a carnival ride swing as it spins

Comparing where prices were at about two weeks out from Easter, there was a difference of hundreds of dollars between the cheapest and most expensive days to fly.

With the Easter long weekend falling on March 29 to 31, flights out of Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne to the rest of Australia's major cities were the most expensive on March 28.

The cheapest days in the lead-up were between March 18 and 22.

On the other side, flights were most affordable from April 4 to 12.

Prices will continue to rise

Over the last two weeks, flights have been increasing incrementally along key routes, and are expected to continue to rise, Mr Ford said.

"We're not talking hundreds of dollars at this point in time, but it will be interesting over the next few days to see how much they do nudge up."

This week, flights from Brisbane to Sydney were about $170 one-way on March 28, Mr Ford said.

They come down to $110 on April 4, then a few days later prices are at $74.

"You're looking at around $100 from peak to trough over a two-week period," he said.

airline trip book

On the Melbourne to Sydney route, a flight on March 28 this week was selling for around $180 depending on the flight times.

When Compare the Market analysed flights a week ago, the most expensive flight from Melbourne to Sydney on March 25 was $174.

Now, with the pinch of grand prix demand and most flights being close to sold out, the cheapest flight is about $400.

By April 9, there are flights for $52.

Weekend crowds at the international racing event are expected to exceed 440,000.

"If there is a lesson to be learned for future needs, it's doing that research as early as possible," Mr Ford said.

How far should you book in advance?

There are some opportunities to find cheaper prices as holidays approach, but it depends on how much time you have and if you're open to "inconvenience", Mr Ford said.

Generally, flights will be less expensive during early mornings and late nights, and from regional airports.

"You need to be able to be more flexible and open to travelling slightly out of town, or getting to the airport at 4am for a 6am flight," he said.

But, the best way to avoid getting stung is to book early, and check terms and conditions in case flights are cancelled, Professor Zhang said.

She suggested these days it's best to generally book flights about three months in advance.

"Two to three months before you plan the travel is a kind of suggested time to finalise your schedule and your overall itinerary," she said.

Depending on the demand of the particular route, you will start seeing prices rise up to two to three weeks, she added.

"And you really need to be mindful of these very hot events in hot destinations, whether that's a big conference or a popular sporting event."

A man and a woman with backpacks and suitcases walk through an airport with their backs to the camera.

'People will still fly'

Rico Merkert, professor of operations and supply chain management at the University of Sydney, said there have always been increases during peak seasons, but it has become more excessive since the COVID pandemic.

"Supply and demand on steroids," he told the ABC.

"What happened is that we didn't have enough capacity or [there was] reduced capacity."

Now, there are chances to "capture an audience" when there are holidays and events like a Taylor Swift concert.

"Sydney to Melbourne is one of the busiest routes on the planet, so it's difficult for airlines to add more capacity — more flights," Professor Merkert said.

"But they see that suddenly everyone wants to fly so that means they can easily increase the fares and know people will still fly."

Jetstar said strong demand from Sydney to Melbourne was a factor in their high prices this week.

"Most customers book well ahead of when they want to travel and like all airlines, our cheapest fares sell out first," Jetstar said in a statement to the ABC.

Falls into 'price gouging' but is it illegal?

These practices are unfortunate for people who have no choice but to book last-minute travel, Professor Merkert said, adding that it would "fall into the category of price gouging".

It also isn't isolated to airlines, with petrol prices already increasing in the lead-up to Easter.

"It's the same with a car, if you have to drive to Orange (in regional NSW) to see your family, you might be able to take a train but there are all sorts of other destinations in NSW where you have to travel further and you have no choice," he said.

The ACCC said increasing prices during periods of high demand is not illegal, but businesses just need to provide clear and up-front information about the price consumers will pay.

Currently, competition is the best hope of keeping prices within reason.

"The ACCC tries to ensure that there's sufficient competition in the market," Professor Merkert said.

"If there are two or three airlines in this space, surely one will have a slightly better deal.

"But in fact, if one raises fares by 30 per cent, then the others won't be far behind."

United Airlines timeline: A look at incidents from the airline this year

United Airlines is under increased oversight after a series of incidents over the past few months raised questions about safety at the airline.

In a memo sent to employees on Friday, Sasha Johnson, United's vice president for corporate safety said that the increased number of episodes "have rightfully caused us to pause and evaluate whether there is anything we can and should do differently."

According to the memo, which USA TODAY reviewed, the Federal Aviation Administration is stepping up its presence in United's operations to try to understand what's gone wrong.

Consumer changes: United Airlines announces miles pooling, seat preference alerts in new updates

"Over the next several weeks, we will begin to see more of an FAA presence in our operation as they begin to review some of our work processes, manuals and facilities. We welcome their engagement and are very open to hear from them about what they find and their perspective on things we may need to change to make us even safer," Johnson's memo said. "As part of this effort, the FAA will also pause a variety of certification activities for a period of time. Those activities will differ depending on the work group and we will learn more from the FAA about that soon."

The FAA's restrictions could include prohibiting passengers from flying on new United planes or routes.

Here's a breakdown of what's gone on at United this year.

Feb. 6: United Airlines plane reports stuck rudder pedals

On Feb. 6, a United Airlines flight from Nassau, Bahamas to Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey experienced "stuck" rudder pedals on its landing roll, according to a preliminary report from the National Transportation Safety Board released in March.

According to the report, the captain told investigators that “the rudder pedals did not move in response to the ‘normal’ application of foot pressure while attempting to maintain the runway centerline. The pedals remained ‘stuck’ in their neutral position.”

The NTSB said it is continuing to investigate the incident, but early tests suggested that cold temperatures may have been a factor.

The plane was a Boeing 737 Max 8. United had received the plane from Boeing Feb. 20, 2023, and removed it from service for maintenance after the incident.

Feb. 19: United Airlines flight diverted after damaged wing

A United Airlines flight from San Francisco to Boston carrying 165 passengers was diverted and landed in Denver after one of its wings was damaged.

United said the plane landed in Denver to "address an issue with the slat," a moveable panel on the edge of the wing that are used during takeoff and landing, the Associated Press reported . The plane was a Boeing 757-200.

The plane landed safely, and the passengers boarded a different plane to arrive later that day in Boston.

Feb. 21: 'Security issue' causes emergency landing

A United Airlines flight traveling from Newark Liberty International Airport to Los Angeles International Airport made an emergency landing at Chicago O'Hare International Airport after crew on board reported "a security issue."

An airline spokesperson did not say what the security issue was but previously told USA TODAY that the flight landed safely and "met local law enforcement upon arrival."

March 4: No injuries reported after engine fire

A United Airlines flight traveling from George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, Texas to Southwest Florida International Airport made an emergency landing in Houston after one of its engines caught fire midair.

No injuries were reported, a United spokesperson previously told USA TODAY, and the airlines arranged for a new aircraft that departed for Fort Myers later that night.

March 7: Tire falls off plane, damages several cars in parking lot

A United Airlines flight departing from San Francisco International Airport was diverted after takeoff when a tire fell off the plane and crashed into a parking lot, damaging several cars.

The plane, a Boeing 777-200, had taken off and was headed to Osaka, Japan when one of its six landing gear tires fell off. The flight was then diverted to Los Angeles International Airport.

No injuries were reported, but the runway was temporarily closed for crews to search for and clear any debris.

United said it would work with the customers and owners of the damaged vehicles to "ensure their needs are addressed."

March 8: Passengers evacuated after plane rolls off taxiway

Passengers onboard a United Airlines flight that had landed at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, Texas had to evacuate after the plane tilted and rolled onto the grass from the taxiway.

The airline previously told USA TODAY that no one was injured, but the passengers had to deplane the Boeing 737 Max 8 using emergency stairs and were bused to terminals.

The FAA previously told USA TODAY it is investigating the incident.

March 15: Missing panel found on plane after domestic flight

A panel was found to be missing on the underside of a United Airlines plane after it landed in Medford, Oregon.

The plane, a Boeing 737-800, had arrived at its destination from San Francisco when a post-flight inspection found the panel was missing, the Associated Press reported .

No injuries were reported on the flight, which was carrying 139 passengers and six crew members. The airport paused operations to check the runway and airfield for debris, but none was found.

March 18: United CEO sends letter acknowledging recent issues

In a letter sent to customers, United CEO Scott Kirby acknowledged the recent issues at the airline.

“Unfortunately, in the past few weeks, our airline has experienced a number of incidents that are reminders of the importance of safety. While they are all unrelated, I want you to know that these incidents have our attention and have sharpened our focus,” Kirby's letter said.

The statement continued: “Our team is reviewing the details of each case to understand what happened and using those insights to inform our safety training and procedures across all employee groups. This is in addition to some changes that were already planned, including an extra day of in-person training for all pilots starting in May and a centralized training curriculum for our new-hire maintenance technician."

Airline pet policy

Airline carrier pet acceptance and accommodation costs.

Although pet acceptance and accommodation costs are not part of the City Pair Program, government travelers still may need to travel with a family pet, or service animal. Below are some fast facts and guidelines to consider when traveling with a pet or service animal followed by direct links to each of the City Pair Program’s participating airline carrier’s pet and service animal policies for your convenience.

Fast facts about traveling with pets

  • Reservations for pets must be made ahead of time directly with the airline’s reservation agent (not a part of the City Pair Program)
  • Non-refundable fees apply per segment (fee varies with each airline)
  • There is a pet capacity on each flight first booked first served
  • In most cases the costs for pet carriage is not a reimbursable travel expense; check with your government agency’s travel policy official to determine if pet travel is reimbursable
  • Pets are conditionally accepted and must not pose a threat or hazard
  • There are size, age, and weight restrictions — not all breed of animals are accepted
  • Kennel size requirements must be met to be allowed on the flight
  • Travelers should acclimate the pet in the kennel so the pet is comfortable with the surroundings prior to traveling
  • Certain vaccinations and health certificates are required
  • Certain counties and/or airports have quarantine restrictions upon entry
  • Pets are not accepted during extreme weather forecasts (i.e. under or over certain temperatures)
  • Many times it is a traumatic experience for pets that are checked as baggage/cargo; travelers should check with their veterinarian to see if a tranquilizer is a good option and what dosage is appropriate, if any
  • Pets of an appropriate size/weight may be able to travel in cabin on (most) non-stop domestic flights with certain carriers
  • Pets may not be able to travel on connect flights
  • International travel: On international flights pets may have to be shipped as cargo
  • International travel: If travel is on an international flight with a codeshare partner of the airline, you must check the operating airline’s pet policy and fees

Fast facts about traveling with service animals

  • Passengers may need to notify disability counter prior to traveling
  • Passengers must provide current documentation prior to traveling
  • Service animals are allowed on domestic and international flights with some restrictions that vary per airline
  • Animal size restrictions do exist and vary per airline
  • There is no extra charge to travel with service dogs

Rates are available between 10/1/2021 and 09/30/2024.

The End Date of your trip can not occur before the Start Date.

Traveler reimbursement is based on the location of the work activities and not the accommodations, unless lodging is not available at the work activity, then the agency may authorize the rate where lodging is obtained.

Unless otherwise specified, the per diem locality is defined as "all locations within, or entirely surrounded by, the corporate limits of the key city, including independent entities located within those boundaries."

Per diem localities with county definitions shall include "all locations within, or entirely surrounded by, the corporate limits of the key city as well as the boundaries of the listed counties, including independent entities located within the boundaries of the key city and the listed counties (unless otherwise listed separately)."

When a military installation or Government - related facility(whether or not specifically named) is located partially within more than one city or county boundary, the applicable per diem rate for the entire installation or facility is the higher of the rates which apply to the cities and / or counties, even though part(s) of such activities may be located outside the defined per diem locality.
