Lion Country Safari
West Palm Beach
The first cageless drive-through safari in the country, this incredible animal park puts you in the cage (ie your car) as 900 creatures roam freely, staring at you . Equal parts conservation area and safari, the park's 500 acres are home to bison, zebra, white rhinos, chimpanzees and, of course, lions. You tour in your car (unless it's a convertible, in which case short-term rentals are available), driving slowly, hoping the animals approach the vehicle.
The best time to go is when it rains, because the animals are more active when it's cool. The park is 20 miles west of downtown West Palm.

Lion Country Safari
Florida's Lion Country Safari named one of nation's Top 5 safari parks
LOXHATCHEE — Providing an up-close look at exotic animals since 1967, and believed to be the first cage-less zoo in the United States, Lion Country Safari was named the fifth best safari park in the country in USA Today's "10 Best" Readers' Choice 2022 poll.
The ranking was announced Friday .
A panel of zoo and travel experts along with several 10 Best editors came up with the initial top 20 list. The final 10 were chosen by popular vote.
A No. 5 finish is a step up for Lion Country Safari, which placed eighth in the poll last year, according to the park's public relations and social media manager, Haley McCann-Gonzalez.
The top spot in the poll was secured by a park in Nebraska, the Lee G. Simmons Wildlife Safari in Ashland. The top 5 lineup:
- Lee G. Simmons Wildlife Safari in Ashland, Neb.
- The Wilds in Cumberland, Ohio
- Colorado Wolf and Wildlife Center in Divide, Colo.
- Bearizona Wildlife Park in Williams, Ariz.
- Lion Country Safari in Loxahatchee.
Lion Country Safari was a pioneer in the zoo world when it opened more than 50 years ago, introducing a new concept in zoology and tourism. It offered families a chance to experience an African safari at a fraction of the cost and time.

Lion Country Safari drive-through park has the largest zebra population in the country
From those humble beginnings, the park now features more than 1,000 wild animals from six continents, including lions, wildebeest, giraffes, zebras, ostriches, chimpanzees, rhinoceroses, impalas, greater kudus, Asian water buffalo and white-handed gibbons, on nearly 600 acres.
Roaming free, the park's zebra population is the largest in the country. On May 6, it added one more member to the herd with the birth of a male plains zebra.
Though maybe not number-one in the country, the park's herd of giraffes is recognized as one of the largest.
The park is known around the world, all the way to the North Pole. On his global December jaunt, Santa Claus makes a regular stop at Lion Country Safari to deliver gifts to the chimpanzees — an event guests can witness annually.
In addition to allowing guests an up-close look at these animals in a natural setting, the park also participates in many conservation initiatives and roughly 35 breeding programs (called species survival plans) for threatened species including the rhinoceros, zebra, oryx and siamang.
These programs help to ensure the survival of a healthy, sustainable population of threatened species in human care and help facilities like Lion Country Safari to act as lifeboats or figurative arks as wild populations decline and face extinction.
The park's employees have been on hand for scores of births from wild donkeys to wildebeests. They have also assisted in one unprecedented surgery to remove a cancerous tumor from a rhino's horn.

Lion Country Safari on 'best zoos' list months after ranking in USA TODAY readers choice awards
Lion Country Safari, we hear you roar.
Months after Lion Country Safari ranked No. 8 on USA TODAY's 10 Best Readers Choice Awards , the attraction made U.S. News and World Report's list of "26 Best Zoos in the U.S " for 2023. Here are some things to know about Lion Country Safari, what it offers and why it's getting national attention.
U.S. News and World Report picks Lion Country Safari for 'Best Zoos in the U.S.' list
In honor of summer vacation, travel and family-friendly things to do , U.S. News and World Report picked their favorite zoos for summer 2023: "While not all zoos are created equal, the editors at U.S. News used an extensive research process to create this list of the top zoos in the country. All the destinations receive favorable traveler reviews on multiple websites, are accredited by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums — an organization focused on the well-being and care of animals — and have been evaluated by experienced veterinarians and animal care specialists."
Here's what U.S. News and World Report said about Lion Country Safari in Loxahatchee: "Set on 320 acres and providing the opportunity to see creatures from six continents while riding in your air-conditioned vehicle, Lion Country Safari is the largest park in Florida with this safari-style experience. Recent travelers raved about the opportunity to see ostriches, lions, zebras and rhinos, with many noting the VIP tour is worth it. In addition to providing a greater understanding of these animals, the facility is involved in Special Survival Plan programs for threatened species like rhinos. Visitors can go on a safari experience, meander through the adventure park and spend the night at the on-site KOA campground. If you prefer a hotel option, West Palm Beach is located about 20 miles east with a variety of options."
What other zoos made the '26 Best Zoos in the U.S.' list?
The editors at U.S. News and World Report also selected the St. Louis Zoo, San Diego Zoo and Brevard Zoo in Melbourne, Florida, for its list of "26 Best Zoos in the U.S." feature.
Here's what the publication said about the other Florida zoo on this list: "The Brevard Zoo, which sits roughly 60 miles southeast of Orlando's theme parks and about 30 miles southwest of the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, offers fun and educational activities in a manageable setting. Families can peruse the open-air exhibits to see alligators, giraffes and zebras. Recent visitors say the habitats were impressive, there was ample shade, and the zip lining experience was a must try. For a unique zoo adventure , join a guided kayak tour to see the rhinos and lemurs of Expedition Africa from the water or board the train to see camels, antelope and African cattle. What's more, the zoo is focused on conservation efforts to protect the local ecosystem with a sea turtle healing center and the building of living shorelines."
Here's the full list, in no particular order:

Lion Country Safari ranks No. 8 in USA TODAY 10 Best poll
In March, Lion Country Safari was voted among the Top 10 safari parks in North America, according to USA TODAY 10 Best Readers’ Choice Awards for 2023.
Here's what USA TODAY's 10 Best editors said about Lion Country Safari: "Palm Beach may be far away from the wilds of Africa, but it’s also home to Florida’s first and largest drive-through safari, the AZA-accredited Lion Country Safari. Established in 1967, this safari park invites visitors to observe and interact with nearly 1,000 animals divided between seven sections. Guests might spot storks, wildebeest and impalas on the Serengeti Plains, observe a pride of lions in Gorongosa Reserve or see giraffes and endangered rhinos in Hwange National Park."
What animals will I see at Lion Country Safari? What are the hours, cost of admission?
Lion Country Safari, 2003 Lion Country Safari Road, Loxahatchee, located along Southern Boulevard, is home to more than 810 animals. It opened 56 years ago, becoming the first "cageless zoo" in the country.
Visitors can see over 89 species from boa constrictors, endangered white rhinoceros and even a zebu, a horned cattle species with a hump and drooping ears.
What makes this Florida animal attraction unique is that it allow guests to see wild animals from around the world roaming free, such as zebras, giraffes and lions, from the comfort of their vehicles. Visitors can park next to a herd of rhinos sunbathing, watch buffalos submerge in a lake to cool off from the summer heat, and can expect ostriches to peck at their windows.
Lion Country Safari's hours of operation are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays and 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekends. Guests can arrive at any time during open hours. Admission is $45 for adults ages 10 and older, $34 for children ages 3 to 9, and free for kids younger than 2. Call (561) 793-1084 or visit the lioncountrysafari.com .

YESTER LION COUNTRY SAFARI (CALIFORNIA) HOURS:
Open every day of the year, rain or shine, at 9 a.m. until:
Summer — June 1 to Labor Day — 6:00 p.m. Fall — Day after Labor Day to October 31 — 5:00 p.m. Winter — November 1 to March 31 — 3:30 p.m. Spring — April 1 to May 31 — 5:00 p.m.
Prices and operating hours subject to change without notice.
According to the brochure, “Go Wild! Drive thru Lion Country Safari African Wildlife Preserve.”
You don’t have to go to Africa for this African Safari. It’s only a 20-minute drive from Yesterland. Lion Country Safari is 40 miles from Downtown Los Angeles or 64 miles from Downtown San Diego, according to the brochure. Just head down the San Diego Freeway to the Moulton Parkway off-ramp. Your safari awaits you right on the Irvine Ranch in Orange County, California.
You’ll be greeted by a sign that reads, “No Trespassing. Violators Will Be Eaten! Lion Country Safari.”
Drive up to a ticket window. Adults are $3.25; children five through eleven are $1.50; four and under are free. There is no charge for parking.
If you’re driving a convertible, you won’t be allowed to drive it through the safari. (They don’t really want the lions to eat you.) Park your convertible at the Hertz Hut and rent an air-conditioned sedan or safari-type vehicle at nominal charge.
Did you bring your pets with you? According to the brochure, “Domestic animals are not permitted in automobiles touring the preserve. First-rate accommodations are provided for them, free, at the Kal Kan Kennel Club.”
A ranger watches from a tower to make sure everything is okay.
You’ll see more than just lions at California’s Lion Country Safari. You can drive your Impala among the antelope. The cheetahs can outrun your Cougar—you have a speed limit, but they don’t. Giraffes will tower over your Pinto. Curious ostriches might peck at your Falcon.
Experience an authentic safari in your family car.
The animals have the right-of-way. Given the size of the elephants and rhinoceroses, nobody should debate this rule.
Camels and zebras and gnus, oh my!
The zebras are glad that they’re separated from the lions by fences. Park guests are glad that the fences are hidden in ditches so that it feels like driving through an African savanna, not through a series of fenced enclosures.
Keep your windows rolled up!
Over 400 animals call Lion Country Safari “home.”
The stars of the show
The highlight of your safari is being surrounded by lions. The only thing between you and the ferocious beasts is your car window. A lion might even jump on the hood of your car—but, more likely, the well-fed lions will all be on the ground taking it easy.
If a 500-pound adult lion dents the hood of your car, how will you explain it to your insurance company?
“Jambo!”
When you finish your drive-through tour of the preserve, the fun isn’t over yet. Park your car and visit the Safari Camp and Entertainment Area.

California’s Lion Country Safari entertained visitors from 1970 to 1984.
On June 16, 1970, Lion Country Safari in Irvine opened to the public. The location in Southern California had a lot going for it—a great climate, a large local population, and a significant tourist base. But Lion Country Safari had stiff competition from Disneyland, Knott’s Berry Farm, and the beach.
Lion Country Safari was given a big boost by an unlikely star attraction. An elderly, nearly toothless lion named Frasier came from a Mexican circus in February 1971. The old cat’s tongue dangled from one side of his mouth, and he had trouble walking. He may not have been much to look at as far as we humans were concerned, but the lionesses saw him differently. There was a population boom of lion cubs at the park. Frasier’s sorry visage adorned tee-shirts and other park souvenirs. Frasier sired 35 cubs until his death in June 1972 at 17-20 years of age, equivalent to a human age of 85-100 years. Frasier even inspired a 1973 feature movie, Frasier the Sensuous Lion , rated PG.
In 1981, Irvine Meadows Amphitheater was added to Lion Country Safari. It was Verizon Wireless Amphitheater from 2000 to 2014. Then it reverted to its original name, before closing permanently in 2016.
On October 27, 1984, in the Los Angeles Times , staff writer Bruce Horowitz wrote about the end of the drive-through safari at Lion Country Safari:
The roar of Lion Country Safari may soon be replaced by a gurgle.
Park officials announced Thursday that they intend to phase out the 100-acre animal preserve at the struggling tourist attraction and replace a portion of it with a major water-theme amusement park.
“This land is so valuable that it no longer makes sense to have these animals occupying 100 choice acres,” said Harry Shuster, president of Lion Country Safari Inc. Over the next three months, the park plans to begin converting operations and selling its estimated 300 “wild” animals—valued at more than $200,000—to other animal parks and zoos nationwide, Shuster added.
When the lions and tigers are gone, the only remaining animals at the park will be tame ones in its petting zoo and exotic birds. Nevertheless, Shuster stressed, the park will retain the name Lion Country Safari. “Why not?” he asked. “Magic Mountain doesn’t have any magic nor is it on a mountain. And Knott’s Berry Farm hasn’t been a real farm for many years.
In November 1984, after more than 14 years in business, Lion Country Safari closed permanently. In 1986, part of the former Safari Camp became Wild Rivers Waterpark.
Surprisingly, the “so valuable” land that was once the drive-through safari remained undeveloped for decades.
The water park operated until September 2011. It’s now the site of Los Olivos, the largest apartment complex in Orange County, with 1,750 units. More apartments are planned for the site of the amphitheater when its lease runs out in 2017.
The Lion Country Safari name has long been erased. Moulton Parkway adjacent to the site is now called Irvine Center Drive. (It’s still Moulton Parkway after Lake Forest Drive.)
Yes, Lion Country Safari is long gone—but you can still visit Lion Country Safari. It doesn’t require a time machine.
That’s because the original (1967) Lion Country in Loxahatchee, Florida, is still open for business.
There’s still a Lion Country Safari near West Palm Beach, Florida.
Over 900 animals live at the Florida park. The four-decade-old attraction has aged gracefully. In recent years, the owners have upgraded the facilities with new features such as a giraffe feeding station, a ferris wheel, and a children’s water-play area, Safari Splash.
Cars and animals still the share the road in Florida.
There’s a four-mile drive-through preserve which provides great views of many different species. Guests are lent a CD or cassette for commentary through the car’s stereo. The lions are now fenced in. Chimpanzees live on islands. The elephants, who had long ago been moved into an elephant enclosure, were removed from Lion Country Safari in 2006; they are now at facilities that provide better social and physical environments for them. (Lion Country Safari’s Bulwagi the elephant was at Disney’s Animal Kingdom for four years before moving to the Birmingham Zoo in December 2010.) But there are still plenty of species wandering around in surprisingly large herds.
Ostriches seem to enjoy seeing their reflections in car windows.
The Safari World area provides animal exhibits, demonstrations, and rides (including rather Dumbo-esque flying elephants). After visiting Safari World, guests are welcome to drive through the preserve again at no additional charge.
It’s worth visiting Florida’s Lion Country Safari if you like animals and you’re in the area. Don’t expect the spectacular art direction of Disney’s Animal Kingdom. (It doesn’t cost as much for admission either.) This is a lovely, old-fashioned Florida attraction for guests of all ages.

The Top Ten Safari Parks in the U.S.
It’s easy to think of a safari park as a place where a bit of Africa or Asia has been conveniently dropped into your section of the United States. For the most part, this is true – a traditional wild animal park often does contain exotic animals and terrain that recreates a savannah, a desert, or a jungle. But some of the animal parks on this year’s top ten list feature the flora and fauna of their region, giving it the importance and respect it deserves.
Still, safari parks are more than just lions and tigers and the occasional bear. They are also a great way to help kids learn about the environment, from the remarkable diversity in the animal kingdom to the workings of their own local ecosystem. So, without further ado, here are the ten parks we’ve chosen as the best places to go on safari without leaving the country.
1. Pine Mountain Wild Animal Safari
Pine Mountain Wild Animal Safari
Pine Mountain, GA
One of two sister safari parks, the Pine Mountain Wild Animal Safari Park is home to a variety of animals, from American bison to African giraffes. In fact, this 250-acre expanse contains more than 120 species of animals, including parrots, peacocks, lemurs, lizards, wolves, and wallabies. You can rent a bus or van for the 3.5 mile tour, or you can use your own vehicle. And there’s also a stroll-friendly section, where kids can hand-feed some of the park’s smaller, tamer residents.

2. Out of Africa Wildlife Park
Camp Verde, AZ
Approximately midway between Flagstaff and Phoenix, the Out of Africa Wildlife Park offers a mix of entertaining and informative shows, a bush safari, and a wildlife preserve. If the kids want to see a tiger swim or an armadillo named Tucker strut his stuff, this is the place to go. There’s even the chance to (safely) feed a tiger. The 40-minute bus ride gives you an up-close view of zebras, antelopes, and other African animals. For the more adventurous group, there’s also a 2.5 hour zipline tour.

3. Virginia Safari Park
Photo Courtesy of Virginia Safari Park
Natural Bridge, VA
The only drive-thru wild animal park in Virginia , this facility has over 1,000 animals on its 180-acre spread. In addition to the 3-mile driving tour, guests can walk around Safari Village and interact with animals in the petting zoo. Reptiles, tigers, birds, giraffes, llamas – they’re all here, and a picnic area too.

4. Lee G. Simmons Conservation Park and Wildlife Safari
Part of Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium and Wild Animal Park, this facility takes an educational approach to the conservation of North American animals. The Park’s residents include bison, elk, deer, wolves, pelicans, black bears, cranes, and eagles. There’s a picnic area for groups, and a hands-on area for kids to feed goats, chickens, and other farmyard critters.

5. San Diego Zoo Safari Park
San Diego, CA
This is the granddaddy of all safari parks; if not the original wild animal venue, it’s certainly the best known. The 1,800 acres that make up this addendum to the San Diego Zoo is home to animals from 300 species and six continents. From the safety of a guided bus or tram tour, kids can see buffalo, cranes, rhinos, and big cats in their (near-enough) natural setting. The Safari Park is also home to the rare California Condor.

6. Disney’s Animal Kingdom
Disney’s Animal Kingdom
Walt Disney World Resort
Orlando, FL
In a place the size of Disney World, it’s easy to overlook some of the attractions. Disney’s Animal Kingdom, however, is hard to miss: it’s the world’s largest animal park, hosting 1,700 animals that represent 250 species. Guests can go on safari, trek through ‘jungles’, explore recreated forests, or ride the Wildlife Express train. And the younger crowd will probably want to see DinoLand USA.

7. Six Flags Great Adventure & Safari
Jackson, NJ
Some of this theme-park-cum-animal-safari attraction spent 2013 offline, thanks to efforts to get Six Flags’ Off-Road Adventure up and running. In 2014, however, expect everything to be open again. This being a Six Flags, there’s far more than just animals (bears, elephants, rhinos, lions, and kangaroos) to see: there’s also coasters to ride and lots of food and souvenirs available. (Call ahead for the Off-Road Adventure; wait times can be up to 2 hours or more.)

8. The Wilds
The Wilds Safari Bus
Cumberland, OH
Ohio may not be the first place you think of for wild animal parks, but this one, built on reclaimed land, is one of the best. The 9,000 acres mean there is lots of room for the camels, cheetahs, and wild horses to roam. In addition to the usual safari trips, folks can go see the sights atop horseback or via zipline. Biking, birding, and fishing are also popular.

9. Lion Country Safari African Adventure
West Palm Beach, FL
Lion Country has two ways to experience an ersatz safari – on foot through SafariWorld, and by vehicle through seven distinct African-esque regions. The African theme extends even to the food at the restaurant. There’s a special emphasis on education here; grade-appropriate classes are available, and there’s a fun scavenger hunt for kids and teachers.

10. Northwest Trek Wildlife Park
Northwest Trek Wildlife Park
Eatonville, WA
This park is unique because it’s not a drive-thru. There is a narrated 50-minute tram tour that highlights elk, moose, and mountain goats. But the goal of Northwest Trek is to get visitors moving and interacting – with the animals and with the exhibits, especially the Cheney Family Discovery Center and in supervised trail-side encounters with beavers, porcupines, and other North American animals. (Call ahead for open times.)

Call them what you will – safari parks, wild animal parks, wild animal safaris, conservation centers – safari parks combine things that kids love: riding around in large moving vehicles, seeing unusual animals, and getting a day away from school. Add in the chance of ice cream at the end, and it’s no wonder why safari parks are favorite field trips.

Lion Country Safari welcomes first baby ape in nearly 28 years
PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. — The Lion Country Safari welcomed the new addition of a rare, endangered ape, park officials announced Thursday.
The new white-handed gibbon was born on Feb. 17. It is the ape to be born at the park in nearly 28 years. According to park officials, the ape will cling to its mother until it matures and begins to explore on its own.
The baby's parents, 23-year-old Tamatha and 36-year-old Larry, are visible on their habitat islands in the last section of the drive-through safari, park officials said.
White-handed gibbons are a lesser ape species native to the rainforests of Asia. They are generally monogamous and produce one offspring after a gestation period of approximately seven months. The average life expectancy for a white-handed gibbon is 25 to 30 years in the wild and approximately 44 years under human care, Lion Country officials said.
The apes are on the endangered list and populations are decreasing in the wild due to habitat loss and illegal wildlife trafficking, officials said.

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — For the first time in nearly 28 years, a rare white-handed gibbon was born at Lion Country Safari in West Palm Beach Saturday.
The newborn ape can be seen hugging onto to its mother as she swings from the the canopy of their habitat. It will continue to cling close to mom until it matures and gains the courage to venture out on its own, according to the Safari.
The baby was born to 23-year-old Tamatha and 36-year-old Larry, who live in their island habitat in the last section of the drive-through safari.

White-handed gibbons tend to live in close-knit, monogamous families, and give birth to one offspring after carrying for about seven months. The species is native to the rainforests of Asia, and can live up to 30 years in the wild and about 44 years in captivity.
Because the white-handed gibbons are listed as Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Lion Country Safari participates in a breeding and conservation program for threatened and endangered species called AZA’s Species Survival Plan.
Some of the biggest threats to the species are habitat loss due to human development and illegal wildlife trafficking, according to the Safari.
Can a ‘Muslim’ lion, ‘Hindu’ lioness live together? An Indian zoo dilemma
A Hindu nationalist group is upset because a lion named after a Mughal king was in an enclosure with a lioness named after a Hindu deity.
The Calcutta High Court this week told the government of the eastern Indian state of West Bengal to consider renaming two lions in a zoo-cum-animal reserve after a Hindu nationalist organisation called Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) found their names rather catty.
Starting on Tuesday, the court heard the plea requesting a change of name for a lioness called Sita, named after a Hindu deity. Until recently, Sita shared an enclosure at Bengal Safari Park with a lion named Akbar, partly the reason for the outrage. Here’s what it’s all about.

What is behind india’s ‘love jihad’ legislation, india police stop interfaith marriage citing ‘love jihad’ law, countering ‘love jihad’ by celebrating india’s interfaith couples, how a ‘love jihad’ case was manufactured in india’s uttar pradesh, why did vhp launch a court petition over the name of a lion.
The lion Akbar shares its name with a 16th-century Mughal emperor who is widely seen as having been a beacon of secularism. He had a Hindu wife, and many of his key advisers were Hindu, too. But like all emperors of the Mughal dynasty, which ruled over much of the Indian subcontinent, Akbar, too, is largely a hate figure among Hindu nationalists.
“Sita cannot stay with the Mughal Emperor Akbar,” VHP official Anup Mondal said on Sunday.
Members of the VHP, which is affiliated with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling right-wing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), also said they received complaints about hurt religious sentiments from all over India, deeming the naming of the big cats blasphemous, in the petition written by VHP’s West Bengal secretary Lakshman Bansal.
The lions arrived in West Bengal under an exchange programme involving Sepahijala Zoological Park in the neighbouring state of Tripura, governed by the BJP. The VHP alleged that Akbar was initially named Ram – a Hindu deity and Sita’s husband – and was renamed by the West Bengal authorities, the opposition Trinamool Congress party.
West Bengal authorities have denied this claim and insisted that the lions came with their names from Tripura.
After the petition was filed, the lions were moved to separate enclosures, apparently to ensure that a “Muslim” lion doesn’t mate with a “Hindu” lioness in a country that has been gripped by Hindu nationalist sentiment in recent years under the BJP.
“What is shocking to me, actually, is the fact that it is a court case now. I find that alarming,” said Moumita Sen, an associate professor of culture studies at the MF Norwegian School of Theology, Religion and Society.
“What is dangerous in this is that this will be setting precedent in a court of law,” Sen said, warning caution, citing examples of previous incidents where seemingly trivial matters became dangerous and life-threatening offences in India.
Sen how a relatively low profile court case snow-balled into a huge controversy for American academic Wendy Doniger’s book, The Hindus. It was said to hurt religious sentiment and set off nationwide incidents of book burning and resulted in the book being banned in India.
Now, it appears that some Hindu majoritarian groups believe lions are susceptible to their conspiratorial concept of “love jihad”.
What is love jihad?
Love jihad is a conspiracy theory mostly pushed by Hindu nationalists in India that accuses Muslim men of trying to woo Hindu women to convert them to Islam.
This theory was on the rise in 2021, when several states in India introduced anti-conversion legislation , and the police started cracking down on Muslim men and interfaith couples .
What does the internet have to say about Akbar and Sita?
Indian cyberspace, particularly X and Instagram, has exploded with memes and AI art commenting and poking fun at the row.
“I do think that when you make a meme, you say a thousand words with one image,” said Sen, who is originally from Calcutta and has researched Islamophobic memes in India. She described memes as a potent form of political communication, breaking away language and literacy barriers.
One meme resembles a film poster with a lineup of hijab-clad panthers on it. This image makes reference to the film, The Kerala Story , which sparked controversy in India in 2023. The film is about women and girls in India’s Kerala state who are converted to Islam to be recruited into the armed group ISIL (ISIS). While the filmmakers said the film was based on real events, fact-checking groups said little evidence was found to back up these claims.
Members of the Muslim Youth League, affiliated with the opposition Indian Union Muslim League party, set up what they call evidence collection counters in all 14 districts of Kerala, offering the reward of 10 million rupees ($122,280) to anyone who would provide evidence of the claims. The film was released in May 2023.

The memes about Akbar and Sita have mostly been created by critics of the Hindu nationalist movement. Some supporters of the VHP’s petition have taken offence to the memes too.
This in itself is “an indication of what can be joked about in this country any more,” said Pratiksha Menon, who has worked as a journalist in India and is pursuing her PhD at the University of Michigan. “Political humour is taken very seriously if it is considered to be hurting Hindu religious sentiments”.
Menon has researched and written about how online Islamophobic humour shapes popular memory. She added that the outcry about Akbar and Sita is a regular part of the “very well-oiled Hindutva propaganda system which maintains itself through regular outrage”. Hindutva is the Hindu majoritarian philosophy that the BJP, VHP and their allies subscribe to.
Menon explained that “If any ideology or any group has to make a claim that it’s victimised, then it needs to, on a regular basis, come up with examples of how it’s being victimised”.
What did the Calcutta High Court say about lions Akbar and Sita?
Calcutta High Court Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya questioned the naming of the lions.
He said that animals should not be named after gods, mythological heroes, influential figures or freedom fighters. He added that not only is it problematic to name a lioness Sita, but it is also not ideal to name a lion Akbar after a successful, secular Mughal emperor.
In the New Delhi zoo a white tigress is named Sita and in Madhya Pradesh’s Kuno National Park, a cheetah is named Agni after the Hindu deity of fire.
West Bengal advocate Joyjit Choudhury told the court that it was not West Bengal that named the lions, but Tripura, and the zoo authorities were considering renaming them.
The case has been reclassified as public interest litigation, which means the bench will not be hearing the matter any more.
Sen described the spat as the “politics of ridiculousness” meant to deflect public attention from other matters. Even the king of the jungle is no longer immune from it.
