Shopping in the old town of Spandau
Tranquil, romantic and worth an extensive walk: in the west of the capital lies the old town of Spandau . A remnant of the city wall from the 14th century, a fortress from the Renaissance period and unusual half-timbered facades bear witness to centuries of settlement history. Even though unfortunately little original building fabric remains today, it is still worth strolling through the winding alleys, crossing old market squares and discovering small special shops . Afterwards, you can have a freshly brewed coffee in a pastry shop and enjoy handmade specialities. While shopping, also visit one of the weekly markets and fill your basket with fresh fruit and crisp vegetables. Afterwards, fortify yourself at one of the hearty snack stands.
If you like shopping, you'll find a surprising variety in every corner of Berlin. Navigate your way through t he capital's shopping world .

A Local’s Guide to Spandau, Berlin
Spandau is situated on the very edge of Berlin’s most western border, and can be found on the other side of Berlin’s Havel river. The first known people to have settled here were Slavic tribes in the 6th century. The name Spandau originates from an Ascanian count (dynasty of German rulers) named Albert the Bear—such a worthy name. By the 17th century, Spandau was passed around between different dominating dynasties. During the Thirty Years’ War Spandau was conquered by the Swedes, then by Napoleon, and then by Prussian and Russian troops. Spandau was an independent city until the 1920s, when it officially became a part of Berlin. After the Second World War the Spandau Prison was used to imprison Nazi war criminals, who were later trialed under the Nuremberg Trials. If Spandau’s history isn’t intriguing enough, let us direct you to some of its most interesting gems. Spoiler alert: you are about to discover Berlin’s best second hand shop.
Konditorei Fester
This café is absolutely amazing—a truly remarkable place. Every one of its customers will be sure to remember this experience, and very likely to associate Fester with Spandau. Even vegans wouldn’t be able to deny how impressive Fester’s cakes and tarts are.
This bakery has been around since 1928, and they are master cake bakers. Their impressive cakes can stand up to 10 layers high, with very, very generous cream filling between and over every layer. The bakers are like architects, constructing and designing their cakes with complete mastery. The crowd is filled with committed regulars, who seem to have been around since the café first opened.

Zitadelle Berlin
This 16th century citadel is one of the best kept military preserves, not just in Germany, but in all of Europe. The fortress stands on an island between the Havel river and the Berlin Spree. The fortress was built from 1559–1594. Zitadelle Berlin stood ground against many attacks until Napoleon conquered it in 1806. Many years later, close to the end of the Second World War, Berliners relied on the fortress for protection against the Soviets. The fortress was unbeatable and caused the Soviets to negotiate a surrender with its inhabitants. Explore the indoor world of this fortress, its beautiful tornado staircase, and don’t forget to check out all of the impressive sculptures in and around this impressive monument. Gotisches Haus
This 15th century Gothic House is one of the most important Medieval buildings standing in Berlin. Visitors are allowed to tour all of the 13 rooms in this Medieval house. On the top floor you can visit the permanent exhibition there which displays how living in Spandau used to be for its residents. On the bottom floor there is a temporary exhibition that changes year round. This is certainly a place to admire in Germany, considering how much of the country was destroyed throughout its lifetime.

Nikolaikirche
What would a European town be without its church? Nikolai Church won’t be hard to find if you’ve already made it out to Spandau. All you have to do is crane your neck back slightly and look for the two towers dominating the Spandau skyline. The church was originally built over 750 years ago, but, like most of the monuments in Berlin, was hit really hard during the many wars it stood witness to. Bombing raids in the Second World War were the final blow that crushed and crumbled the Nikolai Church to its bare foundation (which dates back to the 13th century).

The Militärhistorisches Museum der Bundeswehr – Flugplatz Berlin-Gatow
This museum is one of Berlin’s most interesting historical museums. The Museum of Military History explores the adaptation of aircrafts into the war field and how they have transformed the art of war. This is a highly educational journey that will explain to its audience the drastic shift in the world’s perspective of warfare. Some of the deconstructed ideas include how the complications and tactics of crossing borders have changed, the new speed in transportation of messages, bombs, and important diplomats, and the dehumanization of mass murder, are all credited (positive or negative) to the aircraft. The museum has several ongoing and changing exhibitions and admission is free to all visitors.

Second-Hand-Kaufhaus Fundgrube
If you’re looking for one of Berlin’s best kept secrets, you’ve just found it. This second hand shop is most similar to Salvation Army in the US. This means that all of the trendy, expensive, second-hand Berlin shop owners are probably coming here to buy their merchandise and sell it for more than triple what they paid for it. No judgment, everyone’s gotta make a living one way or another. But, if you’re looking to save money on your wardrobe and yet not compromise on style, then this is the place to go.
Helpful tip: come with a lot of empty bags—there will be too many goodies here that you won’t be able to resist. Plus your wallet will barely feel the weight loss. Oh, and another tip: don’t expect anyone there to speak any English—these are, after all, true Berliners.

The northwest of Berlin consists of the boroughs of Spandau and Reinickendorf . The area was urbanized in the 19th century through the industrialization of Berlin. Before that most districts were small towns. In the early 20th century it was the working-class area with heavy industry where Siemens was founded (today even a small part of Reinickendorf is called Siemensstadt, due to the location of the company). Today it's become more residential but big industrial complexes are still seen in some areas.
Understand [ edit ]
Spandau is the westernmost borough ( Bezirk ) of the German capital city of Berlin . The district lies conveniently in a green area with the nearby Spree and Havel rivers. Once a town in its own right, Spandau is one of the oldest areas in the Berlin region and retains much of its unique character, having been spared the worst of the Allied bombing in the Second World War that so devastated the rest of the city. The center of the district is formed by a dense network of medieval streets and a market square, retaining a large number of timber-framed buildings. Spandau was the site of the military prison in which Hitler's deputy Rudolf Hess was imprisoned after the 1946 Nuremberg trials until his death in 1987. The prison was then demolished. Despite being part of Berlin, neither Berliners nor Spandauers usually consider that fact to apply in popular thought. If for example, you ask a taxi driver to take you to the "city center", they will most likely take you to the center of Spandau, not necessarily Mitte or the old heart of West-Berlin . It's as much in the boondocks as some Berliners ever venture and even those who consider Potsdam in BVG zone C to be at the edge of civilization might consider Spandau basically another planet.
Reinickendorf is a borough in the northwest of Berlin. It consists of the localities Tegel, Reinickendorf, Märkisches Viertel (1970s-era apartment blocks area) and some small, village-like areas. Reinickendorf loves to use fox symbolism as "Reinicke" is a poetic term for fox (the standard term is "Fuchs") which is used in fables. The coat of arms thus showing a fox and Berlin's most successful handball team, Füchse Berlin is from here though they now play their home games in Max Schmeling Halle in the former east.
In general, it is a very green district with much water and the neighborhoods have a typical small town cityscape. In addition to Tegel airport there are some minor sights interesting for tourists (especially architecture in Tegel). Within the borough of Reinickendorf, Märkisches Viertel (sometimes derisively called "merkwüdiges Viertel" - peculiar quarter) is one of the most notable West Berlin new constructions, dating to the 1960s when housing was scarce. When the housing units were constructed, a subway connection was promised, but it took until the 1980s to extend U8 towards the area (by then in questionable parallelity to the S-Bahn) - and Berlin ran out of money just about one or two stops before actually reaching the neighborhood, causing understandable frustration among residents. The extension of U8 to the center of märkisches Viertel is one of the most talked about U-Bahn extensions whenever proposals to extend the network are debated and the Bezirk Reinickendorf is among those clamoring the loudest.
While both areas might feel almost "rural" in parts to Berliners, Spandau alone would be the largest city in Brandenburg were it not part of Berlin, so the "ruralness" of this district is a very relative term.
Get in [ edit ]
Spandau is the terminal station for a couple of public transport lines (especially the backbone line U7 ). Some long distance and all regional trains stop at Spandau.
By public transport [ edit ]
The BVG (the public transport company) runs a public ferry between Kladow and Wannsee which is primarily designed for commuters.
The main U-Bahn routes for Reinickendorf are U8 for the more easterly parts and U6 for the more westerly parts.
By train [ edit ]
Get around [ edit ]
Both Spandau and Reinickendorf cover a pretty large area and as they are rather outlying, the U-Bahn is only of limited use. The S-Bahn meanwhile has stops too far apart to be useful for local transport in most cases. Unfortunately, there is not yet any tram in the area, the West Berlin tram having been shut down in the 1960s. For the most part, you'll thus have to rely on buses for your public transit needs. As elsewhere in Berlin a leading "M" in the line-number means "Metrobus" and they are more frequent, and also run at night but they can be crowded during peak times. Buses with a leading "X" in the line number meanwhile are express buses that skip some stops and will hopefully arrive a bit faster than the "regular" bus. An infamous phenomenon on busier Berlin bus routes is "bunching" when despite nominal five minute headway no bus comes for ten or even fifteen minutes as the first bus gets delayed by boarding and alighting passengers and the following buses catch up. This will lead to the strange experience of three buses arriving all at once the last notably emptier than the first one. The red-red-green government elected 2016 would love to replace the busiest bus lines with tram lines which don't show this problem but funds and planning capacity are limited and it can take years from the first idea to build a line to trams running.

- IBA-Bauten at Tegeler Hafen ( U-Bahn station Alt-Tegel ). During the International Building Exhibition 1984 to 1988 a bunch of remarkable buildings were set around the old Tegeler Hafen. Architecturally diverse, the most important is the Phosphateliminierungsanlage (Gustav Peichl). Also some buildings by Charles Moore are interesting.
- Borsigwerke and Borsigturm ( U6 Borsigwerke ). Ex-industrial buildings from the late 19th and early 20th century, nice clinker-architecture and the first (mini) highraiser of Berlin, the Borsigturm, 65 m high, built 1922-24. The area houses now offices, a shopping mall and some places for entertainment. The company Borsig has a very turbulent and storied history and while it has long since ceased being a "German" company or connected to the family of the same name, the investors that bought the name and assets after a bankruptcy keep producing in Berlin-Tegel.

Travel Advisers: When to Let a Professional Plan Your Trip
By Julie Weed
Decades ago, your vacation most likely began with a visit to a travel agent, who relied on a combination of expertise and connections to find the best deals on plane tickets, hotels, tours and more. Since then, the internet has turned most of us into our own travel agents, and artificial intelligence software is making research and self-booking even easier. But for some trips, that special insider knowledge can still make a big difference.
So when should you hire a professional, and how does it all work? Here are some tips.
Why should I consider a travel adviser?
It’s easy for a traveler to do the research for a standard trip, said Chris Anderson, a professor at the Cornell University School of Hotel Administration, “so they should look for a specialist for the type of tour they are looking for, say a bike trip in Ireland, who can really add value.”
The insider knowledge offered by a travel adviser can add the most value to trips that have multicity itineraries, involve a wide age range of travelers , are very significant (like an anniversary vacation) or are to destinations you are unfamiliar with, said Gary R. Johnson, who has run the travel agency Woodside Travel in Seattle for nearly 30 years. An adviser could help you decide, for instance, in which order to visit European cities based on local events and transportation options.
What can an adviser give me that a booking site can’t?
Travel advisers can help you research the best destinations, lodging, or activities for your particular group and travel goals, offering up specific advice that might be hard or time-consuming to find yourself. Those specializing in cruises might know which cabin to choose if you are prone to seasickness, while a safari planner could help you decide which park would be best for bird-watching or seeing specific animals, like rhinos.
Travel advisers typically have relationships with tour companies, hotels and cruise lines, sometimes through networks. Those connections can allow advisers to offer extra perks such as late checkout, free breakfast, airport transfers, a welcome basket or a credit to spend on a cruise ship.
“A good travel agent will be a better steward of your travel budget than you are,” said Guy Rubin, managing director of Imperial Tours , which arranges travel in China.
When bad weather or other circumstances disrupt your itinerary, travel advisers often have direct lines of communication with providers and can do the work of rebooking and changing plans, saving you time and stress.
OK, let’s say I need help. How do I find an adviser?
Networks like the American Society of Travel Advisors and Travel Leaders have websites that can help you start your search for a travel adviser by answering a few questions about your desired trip. Once you have a handful to choose from, get on the phone with them to talk about what they might do for you, how they charge and the level of service you can expect. Special trips can cost thousands of dollars, so it’s worth investing time up front, Mr. Rubin said.
Make sure to read over the travel agent’s reviews and any user-generated social content that mentions them, Dr. Anderson said. “If there is no external validation, that’s a red flag.”
How do advisers get paid, and how much will it cost me?
Advisers receive commission from suppliers, typically 10 to 15 percent of the price, when selling cruises, lodging and tours. They also sometimes charge travelers a planning fee, from a few hundred dollars, which may be credited to the final bill if the booking is completed, all the way up to tens of thousands of dollars annually for a luxury concierge travel planner they can call on all year. Mr. Johnson said that he charges a planning fee the first time he works with customers. If they return for other trips, he waives the fee.
Advisers may be tempted to sell you something that will earn them a higher commission, Dr. Anderson said. But, he points out, the same is true for the large online services, which promote hotels that pay them larger commissions. Travelers can ask advisers about specific commissions they receive or how they are affiliated with the products they are recommending, he said.
Sometimes a local tour company will package transportation, lodging and experiences for an adviser, who tacks on a percentage before passing it along to a client. But a bill that is not itemized can make it harder to make trade-offs — between a more expensive hotel and a special experience, for example. If pricing transparency is important to you, discuss it with the adviser up front.
How are A.I. and other technologies affecting travel advisers?
While new technologies are allowing do-it-yourselfers to create their own itineraries online based on individual preferences, and to type questions directly into travel websites, advisers are also taking advantage of those technologies to improve their services. Joan Roca, chief executive of the upscale travel planning company Essentialist said his team “uses technology to enhance the human touch,” employing artificial intelligence to choose options from a database of travel offerings selected by a human team. If a couple wants to take an after-dinner stroll, for example, Essentialist’s app will offer up ideas of where to go, based on what part of the city the travelers are in and conversations they’ve had with their travel adviser.
