Description of Exploration

Exploration is a fun game of 15th – 19th century era of exploration from Interactive Magic.

Earlier released in Europe by Black Legend as Voyages of Discovery , the game attempts nothing that we haven’t seen before since the days of Seven Cities of Gold or Colonization : a combination of trading, exploration, war, and economics elements set in the age of exploration. But it does add a lot of complexity to the familiar formula. You can play against up to four computer or human (via network options) opponents. The main goal of this game, as is in most strategy games of this kind, is to either annihilate or do better than your opponents.

In Exploration , this is accomplished by exploring the world with sailing vessels, finding other neutral civilizations and either conquering or befriending them, and developing a good economic base by trading with these new alliances. War is also another option, but one that should be avoided at all costs because it tends to reduce your meager assets. Success in the game relies on laying efficient and profitable trade routes between your colonies and your home port. As time passes, new and bigger ships become available for you to lay longer routes. You can also send expedition groups on shore—these units have the ability to either conquer or befriend the natives they meet.

Random elements such as disease, starvation, and fires must also be dealt with. After you have founded a few colonies and established some trade routes, the game becomes quite repetitive and there is no “meta-goal” (such as declaring Independence in Colonization ) to alleviate the tedium.

Another weak point in Exploration is the tedious user interface that forces you to click on multiple screens to get to the option you want. There are not many shortcut keys you can use to jump quickly to common actions, and the graphics are for the most part too drab and blocky. One of the game’s few redeeming values is the relatively high replay value thanks to random maps, but this isn’t much help when the game as a whole is rather repetitive.

The bottom line is clear: try Exploration only after you have played just about every other historical trading game. Only an average rating for this one. If you like extensive micro management, however, this underdog is well worth a look.

you can use google translate for the german to english manual. copy and paste each page you want to read. i find too many bugs in both amiga version and exploration for dos. but i still like something about this game. in my previous post im talking about colonial ports not the home port. theres a major difference.

How do you transfer goods from colonial port to ships. I can only figure out to transfer goods with expeditions. is this game really that flawed they didn't program a simple mechanic to transfer directly from port to ship?

Description official descriptions

Exploration is a strategy-simulation game set during the Age of Sail. From the time of Vasco da Gama and Columbus (the late 1400s) to the French Revolution (1789), you are put in charge of a nation's imperial destiny. This means financing voyages, assembling crews, sending out land and sea expeditions, founding colonies, and occasionally engaging other European powers for global dominance.

Exploration may seem familiar to players of Civilization , Colonization , Conquest of the New World , Gold of the Americas , and even Sid Meier's Pirates! , as they borrow from exploration and cover a similar topic.

Great DOS game which will run on Win98 and maybe DOSbox

The Good I have played this game since it was released and have not stopped. Played last week in fact. The graphics are really dated and seem to have been colorized with unusual color choices but the basic game is really interesting. You chose to play one or more of 5 European countries which engaged in the exploration and colonization of the world. You play against an AI. You start with a small ship (a caravel) and loot Aztec and Inca cities by transporting your sailors to them. You use the proceeds of this loot to build colonies with mines and plantations and then transport the products back to your home port to sell. You uncover the world by sailing around it until you reveal all. The Bad The graphics, though the ship graphics aren't too bad. Also, the land battles are quick and lack detail. If you plan carefully, you can capture enemy ships, though this works primarily with caravels and carracks, and only rarely with more advanced ships like galleons and others as the years progress. Only ran it on Windows 95 and 98 with a command prompt, but was not able to figure out how to use it in DOSbox on a Windows 7 machine, though it is possible if you understand DOSbox, which I am too lazy to learn properly. The Bottom Line An exploration and colonization game with includes ships, economic management (easy) and building colony production farms and mines like tobacco, cotton, sugar, gold, silver and iron ore. You can leave the native villages alone (stupid) or buy them with trade goods and then either use the population for emigration to your towns or convert the villages to your towns. You could also attack them (you should if Inca and Aztec for loot.) It is like a more ship-building/sailing/exploration game than Colonization, Civilization or FreeCol, but less stressful and in general easier.

DOS · by Ron Guglielmo (2) · 2016

Sid Meier's Colonization, only it's broken and isn't any fun to play.

The Good Attractive packaging, rousing CD musical score, and a comprehensive CDROM reference guide to age of sail ship types. That's about it. The Bad No input into random map creation, and there is no editor. Unfriendly interface is inferior even to those found in much older games. Unforgiving colony management (structures are permanent and you have no clue as to how useful/productive they will really be until they are built!). Diplomacy is shallow and uninvolving. Ahistorical religion model is suited more to medieval period than Age of Exploration. No explanation is given of the model behind combat resolution. Combat with natives (Indians) is pointless, as you gain nothing from it. Assorted historical inaccuracies (game represents sugar as beets instead of cane, etc.). The Bottom Line There are so many other games of this kind (Civilization 1 & 2, Colonization, Merchant Prince, Conquest of the New World, Imperialism 1 & 2) and they are all much better than this one. Exploration looks great on paper, but in reality it couldn't be much worse. It was a very bad game when it was released, and it should be avoided like the scurvy if spotted in a bargain bin today.

Development

Exploration was one of the first games to be released by new publisher Interactive Magic back in the fall of 1995.

It was no coincidence that this first release so closely resembled some classic MicroProse games like Pirates! or Colonization . Interactive Magic boss Wild Bill Stealey co-founded MicroProse with legendary designer Sid Meier in the early 1980s; I-Magic was his attempt to recapture that MicroProse Magic all over again.

Exploration - Voyages of Discovery

voyages of discovery game

A decent trading game

Exploration is a typical trading and shipping strategy game that covers the already familar turf of sailing, trading and combating in the age of the Exploration, from the 15 to the 19th century. While typical, it still does a decent job of making the game interesting - you have four AI or human opponents againsts and you have to either destory them or be better of them. There is a lot to do - trading, exploring, warring, taking care and managing the resources, so you definitely won't be bored. Mostly you will be exploring the lands and befriending the nations on the new lands. You can also exterminate them, but that is a costly business and should be avoided. The game looks good and plays solidly good, but one can be annoyed by the complexity of controls and the fact that, after a while , the game get repetitive and monotonous. Still, it's a pretty good trading game and you should definitely give it a shot. And if you're for something a spicier, try Machiavelli the Prince .

Trading game

Good shipping and trading game, some pirates are out to get your goods: ome other nations are out to get you. Based in the old world of galleons, caravels and frigates and pirateers. Make your way in the world and become a rich sailor or even a town govenor.

Voyages of Discovery screenshot #1

Way back in April 1990 AF gave Pirates from Microprose the once over. It earned 74 per cent which is a fair enough mark, but belied the playability, enjoyment and hours of fun that could be derived from playing the game. It had historical background, geographical accuracy of a sort, combat, tactics and strategy. Any one segment looked at individually couldn't cut it in the unforgiving world of good games. But viewed as a whole, the game had its own internal dynamics and intricacies.

Against it was the fact that the world you sailed around in was finite and constant. You ended up knowing it like the back of your hand. The combat sequences were simplistic and not very believable. You couldn't play against anyone else and there wasn't much variety. Voyages Of Discovery changes all that. It caters for up to four players and you must start with two, one of which can be Amiga-controlled. Each player starts off in a port on an island surrounded by uncharted sea. Your job is to change all that by christening and provisioning a ship, recruiting a crew and sailing into the unknown. While you do this, the opposition captains are doing the same.

Moves are executed in turns, with each ship having a certain amount of moves per turn. If you're playing against human opponents, you have to leave the Amiga until they complete their turns. Initially, finding land with native settlements is paramount. Expeditions can then be formed and the natives either conquered or negotiated with. As soon as that's done, it becomes a settlement upon which you can build or cultivate useful utilities and crops such as sugar and tobacco plantations, silver and gold mines, churches and ports.

Doing this takes up a lot of time though. And when you've got sizeable, profitable settlements up and running, you'll attract the attention of pirates, not to mention your opponents. That's when recruiting armies to protect your ships and settlements comes into play. There's nothing more heartbreaking than losing a hard-earned settlement to one of your opponents, but there's nothing more satisfying than stealing an opponent's settlements.

This game would be perfect for a play by mail system where players could send saved game disks to each other. On the down side, some of the game mechanics are much too fiddly. For example, loading and unloading your ships at settlements that don't have a port is a particularly tiresome and tedious experience.

On the plus side, the game improves on the believability and hookability of Pirates and anyone who's interested in trading strategy games should take a very close look at Voyages Of Discovery. There's hours and hours of gameplay to be had here.

Voyages of Discovery – New Online Simulation Game

This simulation introduces students to the Voyages of Discovery. These daring overseas adventures marked the beginning of globalization and European empire-building.

By playing the game students will learn about some of the most important explorers, their discoveries, and the spices which they brought back to Europe.

The main aim of the game is to find your way to the Spice Islands in the Far East. There are several key islands, each with a different spice (cloves, nutmeg, pepper, sandalwood and cinnamon). Obtain each of these, then sail back home to England to complete your mission.

Suggested Lesson Plan

The simulation could be set as a homework exercise, but I prefer playing it in classroom time over several lessons (students can ‘save progress’ at the end of each session so they can pick up where they left off). It contains a wealth of information to keep them busy for several hours, although you could direct students to complete particular tasks if you have less time.

Read the introductory screen to the whole class and stress that they will need to provide their name for the ‘leaderboard’ (which serves the same purpose as a live markbook).

voyages of discovery game

1. The outline map . They should make sure they plot their progress on this with details of the places they discover. This will be invaluable to help them find their way around.

2. The video task . Stress that at regular intervals of 5 minutes or so, a fresh video clip will be presented to them (there are five of these, one for each of the five main spices) and that these will need to be watched in order to complete the worksheet.

3. The explorers task . 10 key locations (highlighted in green on the teacher version of the map) will contain information about explorers and their discoveries. These should be used to complete this part of the worksheet.

From my experience, it is a good idea to allow students one lesson to simply focus on the mapping and the video notes, and another lesson or homework to play again with particular focus on the “explorers” task.

How to complete the game

Although you should try to avoid giving too much away, if students start to get frustrated or need some assistance, you can obtain detailed Teacher Notes which explains clearly how to finish the game, as well as completed answers to the main tasks.

Follow-up tasks

At the time of writing (October 2019) I am trying the game out with my own students. I will be udpating this page in the coming weeks with further resources and follow-up tasks based on my experiences.
